KEITH’S extraordinary career as a mortician and funeral director has spanned more than five decades – a testament to his craftsmanship and passion for his work and one marked by professional excellence and profound dedication to his community and country. Keith walked in his purpose and calling building institutions of distinction from the ground up and inspiring generations to continue his legacy of service.
Keith developed a curious fascination with undertakers while he was an altar boy at St. Barnabas Anglican Church. Serving on the altar gave him an unobstructed view of the smartly dressed undertakers reverently directing the movement of families and their loved ones’ remains in step to the hymns being played by the organist. Keith was mesmerised. He found a solemn beauty in funeral services and always appreciated the “Sunday Walking Funerals” as he referred to them, as most funerals had processions and were held on Sundays.
In the summer of 1968, at just 11 years old, young Keith began working as a student with Raleigh Butler (d. 2013) of Butler’s Funeral Home & Crematorium which deepened his fascination with the funeral business. His early duties involved maintaining the funeral home grounds, cleaning vehicles and assisting the funeral directors during church and cemetery services. His duties were humbling but they planted the seed for a lifelong calling in the funeral industry.
The following year, in 1969, Keith became a mentee of Fealey Demeritte (d.1992) of Demeritte’s Funeral Home. Mr. Demeritte gave him a part-time job at his funeral home. Keith was
12 years old. At that time, he was the youngest person employed in this growing profession.
Keith always recognised the three men, Raleigh Butler, Fealey Demeritte and Llewellyn Astwood as being dream builders who recognised potential in a young kid and gave him his start.
It was under the tutelage of Fealey Demeritte that a 12- year-old Keith was able to carry out minimal duties in the embalming room – selecting and passing instruments and observing the process of embalming and preparing deceased bodies. He also cleaned all of the instruments and prepared the room for the morticians to begin their work. Years later, Keith would receive more hands-on training in embalming from Llewellyn Astwood Sr., after he returned from his studies abroad in mortuary science.
Keith credited Mr. Fealey Demeritte and Llewellyn Astwood Sr., then Manager at Demerittes, with “nurturing my ambition to become a mortician. I will always regard these gentlemen as two of my greatest mentors and friends.”
Even after enlisting in the Royal Bahamas Police Force in 1974, Keith continued working part-time at Demeritte’s Funeral Home honing the craft that he loved so much.
In 1980, 684 McSweeney, resigned from the Royal Bahamas Police Force to pursue tertiary studies in Dallas Texas, a defining step that underscored his fierce determination to realise a personal dream of becoming a licensed funeral director and embalmer.
Through personal initiative and financial independence, Keith enrolled at the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science in Texas. Though his mother, Ruby, was very hesitant about him leaving a stable job – especially having a firstborn – he followed his calling.
While studying in Dallas, Keith gained invaluable experience working at Cedar Crest Funeral Home under the mentorship of Walter Wilson, who treated him like a son. Their close relationship continued until Mr. Wilson’s passing in January 2013.
Keith was always brilliant, and on February 13, 1981, he graduated with honours as a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer also passing the State Board Examination of Morticians for the state of Texas.
Inspired by Wilson’s professionalism, Keith obtained permission to use the name Cedar Crest in The Bahamas. Subsequently, upon returning home Keith established and opened Cedar Crest Funeral Home located on Robinson Road in Nassau in 1981, with the financial support of his late stepfather, Robert Murdoch who believed in Keith’s vision.
With Keith at the helm of Cedar Crest Funeral Home, it flourished. While Keith operated Cedar Crest, the business was referred to as the funeral home for police officers having so many deceased officers left in the care of Keith, a former officer himself.
Keith often said that he truly loved his profession as an embalmer and funeral director not only for the service it allowed him to offer others but also, he said the added bonus was that it provided an opportunity to bring generational wealth into his family. He was always a forward thinker. Eventually, his mother Ruby grabbed hold of Keith’s vision and became actively involved in the day-to-day business. Keith’s sister Kathy soon followed by joining the business and later his brother Audley who Keith encouraged to study mortuary science. Keith wanted to ensure continuity in the family business that he established.
For 12 years, Keith built a loyal clientele of Cedar Crest Funeral Home. Keith utilised his training and his gifted hands to establish himself as a skillful and caring mortician, known for his unmatched artistry that made the deceased appear as though they were simply having a peaceful rest. These attributes, coupled with compassion in serving families during their most difficult times, endeared Keith to many, and placed him among some of the leading morticians in the field. Ever the visionary, Keith saw the need for the funeral home to expand not only to another location but also to broaden its range of services. Keith’s dream ultimately led to the family acquiring Yager Funeral Homes and Crematorium in Freeport, Grand Bahama and expanded to include cremations.
After his stepfather died, his greatest supporter, the direction of the business changed. In 1993, Keith resigned from Cedar Crest, the business that he established and from that point forward, he was no longer affiliated with Cedar Crest or any other funeral home in The Bahamas.
After resigning from Cedar Crest, Keith once again began from the ground up establishing what
would become Restview Memorial Mortuary & Crematorium Limited located on the three-way intersection of Soldier Road, Robinson Road and Prince Charles Drive.
On 31 October 1994, Restview Memorial Mortuary opened its doors for business to provide a legacy of care and dignity underscored by service with excellence. Setting a standard of excellence, Restview was constructed as a modern facility fully equipped with an embalming laboratory, casket selection room, dressing room, offices, boardroom and staff lounge. In addition to this, were visitation suites, one of which was designed with the ambiance to receive children and a chapel area intended to also serve as three separate visitation suites.
Keith’s funeral business thrived. In time, as Restview became a trusted name in The Bahamas, his vision expanded across the Family Islands:
In 1997, he opened Restview Memorial Mortuary & Crematorium Limited, on Grand Bahama, a state-of-the-art facility to serve the northern islands.
In 2017, he opened Restview Memorial Mortuary & Crematorium Limited in Abaco to serve island communities with the same professional care as the capital.
In 2021, he opened Restview Memorial Mortuary & Crematorium Limited in Eleuthera to extend Restview’s presence into the Central Baha mas, ensuring every family could receive quality care close to home.
Keith’s legacy is far greater than the funeral homes he founded. His legacy lives in the countless hundreds of families he comforted by his genuine concern, care and professionalism over decades. His legacy lives on in the opportunities he created for young Bahamians interested in the funeral profession. He nurtured leaders, some of whom are carrying forward the Restview tradition of compassion, dignity and the highest standards of professionalism.
Through Keith’s vision, innovation and dedication, he transformed the way funeral services are experienced. For those following in his footsteps, he has left lasting standards of dignity, compassion and service with excellence.
