OR THE month of October, members at The Bahamas Harvest Church introduced and launched what they are calling the “Entanglement” series. This new virtual relationship message series is geared towards having a conversation under subtopics that include: red flags, red table, red couch and red carpet. When asked what inspired the series, Pastor Mario, founder and lead pastor at Bahamas Harvest Church recalled the July 10 Will Smith interview with his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, who brought herself to the Red Table - a web-based talk show where she is usually lead host, to talk about her affair with R&B singer August Alsina. She introduced the world to the term “Entanglement”, an alternative word to describe the adultery. “Given the widely cultural practice of adultery in The Bahamas, we felt as though this would be a great time to have a heart to heart conversation about a subject that has affected so many families and have disturbed so many lives,” said Pastor Mario. “The goal of this series is to create an environment where couples can find healing from the scars and the pain of an entanglement. An Entanglement will definitely redefine the core structure of the relationship but it doesn’t have to ruin it. As a matter of fact, it is possible for the couple to emerge into a renewed relationship that can blossom and grow to a level of love and affection they never thought possible.” He went on to say marital infidelity is a painful and traumatic experience that requires lots of grace in order to recover. And entanglements can take place in every type of marriage - rich, poor, young, old, newlyweds, seasoned marriages, religious, non-religious, atheist and Christians. “The four message titles in this series

In my first message Red Flags, we talked about why entanglements happen and named five red flags which are: Uncontrolled Imagination, An Air Of Entitlement, A Prolonged Dissatisfaction, An Insatiable Desire and A Longing To Escape. “Gaining an understanding of the meaning and motives of the entanglement helps in providing ministry to the couple involved, particularly the unfaithful spouse. Even though we are armed with this information, there is no justification for betrayal. Infidelity is not a marriage problem, it’s an individual sin problem,” said Pastor Mario. In the second message titled Red Table, Pastor Mario said this is the place where couples have the difficult, but honest, conversation about the entanglement. In this message he talked about the Five Types Of Entanglements: an object entanglement, a cyber entanglement, a sexual entanglement, an emotional entanglement and a relationship entanglement. Moreover in last week’s “Red Couch” message, it was at this point he discussed
the number one question that face most betrayed spouses, “should I stay or should I go?” “The three biblical options available to Christians are: divorce, separation and reconciliation. At The Harvest, whereas we haven’t always been successful in assisting couples reconcile, it is the option that we champion. However, reconciling is by far, one the most challenging process that anyone would ever have to experience in their lifetime,” he said. “Due to the grossly underestimated pain and damage that occurs in an entanglement - ‘detanglement’ requires a phase approach. Phase 1 is Repair The Damage and it requires the unfaithful spouse to severe all contact with the entanglement, all. Phase 2 is Rebuild Trust which has the unfaithful spouse establishing safeguards in his or her life. A safeguard is a measure taken to prevent harm and protect your relationship from damage. The final Phase is to Reconnect For Life and it is here that the unfaithful spouse take lifelong responsibility for and ownership of the entanglement.”
He said it is important to recognised that whereas God forgives all sins, there are still consequences for a person’s actions. “This weekend, my message is titled Red Carpet and we will continue the conversation defining the quality of reconciliation that so many couples find themselves in today. The key benefit of a message series like this is reclaim and rescue the entire family from a perpetual circle of misery. There are countless couples that barely coexist under the same roof after an entanglement with no connection to each other and as a result, live unfulfilled and unsatisfied lives because they’ve never received the healing they deserved. This series is designed to give them permission and freedom to start the conversation so that they can live again,” said Pastor Mario. Even though the church has suspended in-person worship since March 15, Pastor Mario said the doors have remained open. The cameras were never turned off and the congregation has never stopped connecting with each other, whether in virtual small groups for prayer gatherings or lunch-time bible study. He believes it’s important for members to provide these platforms so that the church family can continue to grow spiritually. “The feedback to our entanglement message series has been overwhelming as so many couples are expressing a deep gratitude for giving voice to an issue that many of them, both unfaithful spouses and betrayed spouses, have been emotionally wrestling with whether the entanglement occurred many years ago or is as recent as last month. We will continue to allow God to lead us into topics that are both relevant and redemptive bringing healing, hope and deliverance to our congregation,” said Pastor Mario. Keeping The Faith BY CARLOS SPENCER FAITH is at the heart of our walk with God. It is inconceivable that one could have a meaningful relationship with God without faith being in the equation. Hebrews 11:1 (KJV) identifies faith as “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”. As believers, holy scripture provides us with a good deal of reference to faith and our Creator’s awesome power. Psalm 46:10 (KJV) admonishes us to “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth”. Faith is an important and rudimentary component in all human life. It elucidates our path in moments of darkness and provides strength when we are weak. In essence, faith is the consequence of believing the gospel of Jesus Christ; the good news that Christ died for our sins and made a way for us to be reconciled with God and to be with Him in eternity. This is an amazing situation and one that beckons gratitude from the believer. The need for faith cannot be overstated. It is fundamental in the life of a believer and lack of faith is akin to a stream being without water. Without faith it is impossible to please God and this is delineated in the story of Job in the Bible. Job was a wealthy and accomplished man and this was reinforced after his fortunes were restored by God. It is clear that God was pleased with Job. (Job 42:12) Faith causes God to take action in a particular way and this is demonstrated in Mark 2:5 and James 1:5-7. It is our faith which strengthens us during life’s difficult moments and enables us to overcome our challenges. We hold on to our unshakeable faith looking to God to see
us through. Moreover, faith acts as the genesis of what we do. (James 2:17-18) Finally, our faith can encourage others and guide their actions, and is the foundation of salvation. As believers we must constantly fight to preserve our faith during the storms of life. Satan will do his best to derail our faith but we must be strong. I Peter 1:7 (KJV) provides us with a powerful reminder: “That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:” Amen. Thanks be to God for the sharing of His word.

HEN it broke ground in 1887, Ebenezer Baptist Church Exuma had one mission in mind which was to evangelise the islands and spread love – the heart of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Now, 128 years later, the mission remains the same and the church is to press on with the goal with more vigor than before. Celebrating more than a century in service last Sunday, the leadership of Ebenezer said it’s grateful for how far the church has come and it is looking forward to making a greater impact in the next 128 years. The Rev Stephen Smith and the Ebenezer family celebrated their 128th church anniversary with a special service on Sunday. Acknowledging the church got to where it is thanks to the dedication and commitment of those who paved the way, the service focused on remembering forerunners and on the new deacons and deaconesses. There was an interview conducted by church member Reginald Smith in which many of the older members shared their experience and spiritual walk at Ebenezer over the years.
Many shared how they were able to overcome various challenges over the decades. Rev Smith delivered the word of restoration during the current global pandemic. “This is no time to play church,” he said. Comparing this era of the church to the final half of a basketball game where the stakes are high, Rev Smith said: “We as a church are in the fourth quarter of the game. This is the fourth quarter of the year and we are gonna watch God turn it around for us despite the challenges from COVID-19. We must praise God in the sanctuary, we must praise Him in the firmament of His power. God will take care of you, no matter what the test may be. In this last quarter we are moving forward to 2021, when we can expect wonders and extraordinary manifestation of the Glory of God. The glory of God is being manifested in this place. God will not forsake us,” he said. Rev Smith admonished the congregants to take this pandemic profoundly seriously. From the pulpit, he also echoed reminders to the congregants about wearing masks, practicing social distancing, and adhering to the Government mandates and health protocols.

Since the church’s reopening, Ebenezer has implemented various protocols to ensure parishioners are safe. Rev Smith and his executive team have installed sanitisation stations at the church entrances, placed social distancing signage in walkways, designated and visibly marked distant seating in pews and placed caution signs at the entrance doors for mask wearing. They have also opted to open windows during worship services for the natural air flow. Rev Smith said he is thankful for the opportunity to hold worship services but believes in safety first.
A member of the COVID surveillance health team, nurse Judith Russell (of Exuma Health Care Centre) was invited to make a presentation on proper health tips, preventative care, and practices to the congregants of Ebenezer. The mission of Ebenezer Baptist Church is to reflect Jesus by following His example, challenging others to become disciples of Jesus, and to equip people to serve and live for God. “We are here to worship God, share Jesus Christ, teach the Bible, minister to people, and to be salt and light in the world. We are striving to be a church on its knees before God,” he said.
