Edgecombe Jr finished with nine points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal in 34 minutes as the Sixers began their season with a victory over the reigning NBA champions. He shot four of 10 from the field, missed all three of his attempts from beyond the arc and converted one of two free throws, while finishing with a plus minus rating of zero. The numbers represented a considerable change from his first NBA game last October, when he announced himself with 34 points, seven rebounds and three assists in a 117116 win over the Boston Celtics. That performance immediately established the former Baylor University standout as one of the most exciting young players in the league, but his second season presents a different challenge following Philadelphia’s significant offseason recruitment. The Sixers added LeBron James and Jaylen Brown to a roster that already included Joel Embiid and !"#$%!"$&'()%!"#$%&'$("#%)*+',-)./%,&)0%$&'1)2034)5&.'6789')3,:)$';<:)<%$=-)>#<");7,>%,&)?'@,7A)3%8'-)&/,#A.)<"')-'67A&)"%$;)7;)%A)B@C)9%-='<9%$$) Tyrese Maxey, creating a .%8')%.%#A-<)<"')B'>)D7,=)EA#6=-)7A)F/'-&%G:)H6<79',)IJ:)IJI+:)#A)B'>)D7,=K))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) NBA OPEN - SEE PAGE 2 )))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))LC!)!"7<7M*+,-.%*+,-./0-%11N

Philip Hanna Jr finishes Chess Sebastian Walcott Federation Open Series on top delivers grand slam PHILIP Hanna Jr finished the Bahamas Chess Federation’s 2026 Open Series on top after winning the New Providence Open on tiebreaks, capping the five-round tournament with four points at Boost Academy in Palmdale. Hanna shared the tournament’s highest score with candidate master Kendrick Knowles, who also recorded four points, but Hanna prevailed on tiebreaks to claim the championship title. Knowles finished second, while Lincoln Knowles and Abijith Nair completed the top four with three anda-half points apiece, their positions also settled by tiebreaks.

The New Providence Open was the fourth and final qualifier for the BCF National Chess Championships, scheduled for January 2027. With the series now complete, Nair and Kenville Lockhart secured the remaining qualifying places for the national competition. Nair made his mark on the tournament by defeating FIDE master Cecil Moncur and gaining a combined 106 FIDE rating points. His performance earned him the top junior player award, while Diana Williams received the top female player award. The event also featured three members of

The Bahamas’ national chess team following their appearance at the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, bringing international experience back to the domestic competition. Hanna’s victory closes the federation’s 2026 Open Series as attention shifts to its upcoming events. The BCF National Junior Female Chess Championships is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, before Bahamian junior players compete at the Central American and Caribbean Youth Chess Festival in San José (Sabana), Costa Rica, November 1-8. The regional festival will

SEBASTIAN Walcott delivered a grand slam to headline a four-RBI performance as the Surprise Saguaros extended their winning streak to five games in the 2026 Arizona Fall League (AFL), with the Bahamian prospect continuing to build momentum ahead of the 2027 baseball season. The Texas Rangers’ top prospect, ranked eighth on Major League Baseball’s Top 100 Prospects list, went 2-for-5 with four runs batted in and two runs scored in

Friday’s 12-5 victory over the Mesa Solar Sox at Surprise Stadium in Arizona. His first home run of the fall came during a nine-run opening inning that put the Saguaros firmly in control. Walcott, 20, cleared the bases with a towering shot to left field in his second plate appearance of the first inning. Facing a 90.1 miles per hour sinker with five runs already on the board, he connected for a 397-foot grand slam with an exit velocity of 98 miles per hour and a launch angle of 25 degrees, stretching the lead to 9-1. ‘VJ’ Edgecombe Jr and new look 76ers win season-opening game NBA OPEN - FROM PAGE 1 starting line up with four established offensive options alongside Edgecombe Jr. The Bimini native is therefore entering a season in which his contribution will not necessarily be measured by how frequently he handles the ball or leads the team in scoring. Maxey led the Sixers with 28 points, five assists and four rebounds, while Brown contributed 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists in his Sixers regular season debut. James finished his debut with 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, and Embiid recorded 13 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, two steals and three blocks. Edgecombe Jr’s scoring output was modest by comparison, but his playing time indicated that he remains an important part of head coach Nick Nurse’s rotation. He played almost 35 minutes in a game in which Philadelphia relied on its collection of established stars to provide much of the offensive production. The change in circumstances was anticipated before the season began, with Edgecombe Jr acknowledging that the arrival of James and Brown could affect his opportunities while insisting

that winning remains his priority. Speaking to The Philadelphia Inquirer in August, Edgecombe Jr said: “But I just want to win. I’m going to still be aggressive, still be myself. If that comes with less shots or more shots, who knows. I don’t know how the course of the game is going to go. I’m just excited to play alongside my teammates. I think we have a chance to do something really special.” The comments reflected a willingness to adapt rather than become preoccupied with maintaining the individual production that defined his rookie season. Edgecombe averaged 16 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.4 steals across 75 games last season, establishing himself as a reliable contributor and finishing third in the NBA Rookie of the Year voting. His challenge now is to translate that development into a role within a more experienced and offensively loaded starting five. Edgecombe Jr also recognised the importance of becoming a respected perimeter shooting threat as defences concentrate on Philadelphia’s other scorers. In the same interview, he explained that he had been working on his shooting during the summer,

knowing that the presence of so many established offensive players could create opportunities away from the ball. “It’s fine if they don’t respect me, I’ll just get a bunch of open shots,” Edgecombe Jr said. “I’m just working. That’s the main thing for me. That comes with work. Whatever I want I got to work for it. I’m willing to do that.” His shooting against the Knicks illustrated the area that will require attention as the season progresses. Edgecombe Jr missed all three of his three-point attempts, although his overall field-goal percentage stood at 40 per cent. It would be premature to draw conclusions from one game, particularly given the adjustment required when playing alongside several high usage teammates, but consistent perimeter shooting will be important to keeping defences from concentrating solely on Philadelphia’s leading scorers. Nurse has already made it clear that he values qualities in Edgecombe Jr that extend beyond his scoring ability. Following the Sixers’ elimination from the playoffs in May, the coach praised the rookie’s overall contribution and the characteristics he believes

will support his development. “That was a hell of an impressive rookie season. I mean, he’s a hell of a player, and it’s not about shooting, scoring, jumping, any of that stuff,” Nurse said. “He really knows how to play. He really has a leadership quality to him. I think he’s a big time winner. Works really hard.” Nurse added that Edgecombe’s future remained bright because of the qualities he had demonstrated during his first season. The coach’s assessment provides context for the guard’s place in the new look 76ers line-up, where his value will also depend on his ability to defend, make decisions and contribute without dominating possession. Against New York, Edgecombe Jr was involved in an important defensive sequence late in the fourth quarter. With the Knicks attempting to close the gap, he and Embiid met Jalen Brunson at the point of attack, while James took away the outlet pass to Karl Anthony Towns and Maxey moved into the passing lane to produce a steal and a fast-break dunk. The sequence illustrated how Edgecombe Jr could remain influential even when he was not among Philadelphia’s leading scorers. Edgecombe Jr

Pro Picks: Defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks will hand the Chiefs their first loss !"#$%!#&''(()# '*#*+,#-,,./011#2+3.4+ KENNETH Walker III is going back to Seattle with the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs to face the team he helped lead to the Super Bowl last season. Walker, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs visit the Seahawks (3-3) on Sunday night. Walker leads the NFL in rushing with 665 yards despite already taking a bye week while the Seattle has missed the Super Bowl MVP. The Seahawks are 18th in rushing and have averaged 3.9 yards per attempt. Sam Darnold has seven interceptions in slightly more than four games and the Seahawks haven’t made up for Walker’s absence. But they have Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who leads the NFL with 717 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Walker has provided the Chiefs a balanced attack. They haven’t had a 1,000yard rusher since Mahomes became the starter in 2018. Walker is on pace for 2,261 yards, which would set a single-season record. Despite their struggles, the Seahawks are 2 ½-point favourites. Pro Picks likes the home team. SEAHAWKS: 23-20 NEW ENGLAND (4-2) at CHICAGO (4-2) Line: Bears minus 3 Drake Maye has led the banged-up Patriots to three straight wins. A.J. Brown returned last week but dropped three passes. Caleb Williams was nearly flawless in his first game back, leading the Bears to 31 points. Chicago plays consecutive primetime games against last season's Super Bowl opponents, starting with tonight’s matchup. BEARS: 24-20

PITTSBURGH (4-2) vs. NEW ORLEANS (2-4), in Paris Line: Steelers minus 3 Aaron Rodgers led the Steelers back from a 13-point deficit in Tampa Bay, relying on DK Metcalf and rookie Germie Bernard. The Saints got their run game going in a win over the Giants. Both teams are spending the week in Paris before playing the NFL’s first regular-season game there. The Steelers have covered the spread four of the past five games. STEELERS: 23-18 CINCINNATI (3-2) at BALTIMORE (4-2) Line: Ravens minus 2 ½ Joe Burrow and the Bengals are coming off a bye. Their defence had a great start but has struggled against the run in the past three games. The Ravens still might not have Lamar Jackson so Tyler Huntley would start his third straight game. Baltimore is eighth in rushing and relying on Derrick Henry is a smart move if Jackson is out. BENGALS: 22-17 CLEVELAND (4-2) at TENNESSEE (1-5) Line: Browns minus 1 ½ Deshaun Watson led another fourth-quarter game-winning drive for the Browns, but the offence has struggled despite the team’s winning record. Tennessee’s offence is last in the NFL. The Titans beat the Colts for their first win, but Cam Ward had another rough outing. UPSET SPECIAL: TITANS: 20-17 INDIANAPOLIS (2-4) at MINNESOTA (5-0) Line: Vikings minus 6 1/2 The Colts’ struggles cost general manager Chris Ballard his job. Coach Shane Steichen is clearly on the hottest of seats and the team has to find ways to win. The undefeated Vikings are coming

They’ve been winning on defence and special teams and need Kyler Murray to get the offence going. VIKINGS: 23-18 MIAMI (0-5) at NEW YORK JETS (2-4) Line: Jets minus 4 ½ The Jets haven’t won an AFC East game under coach Aaron Glenn, going 0-7. They have their best chance this week vs. Miami. The winless Dolphins are coming off a bye. QB Malik Willis has the worst passer rating (68.4) among starters. JETS: 20-17 NEW YORK GIANTS (3-2-1) at HOUSTON (2-4) Line: Texans minus 10 ½ J.J. McCarthy is replacing Jameis Winston, who had a winning record after taking over for Jaxson Dart. McCarthy will face an underachieving defence stacked with talent. C.J. Stroud is playing great football for the Texans, who’ve won two in a row. TEXANS: 26-17

SAN FRANCISCO (6-0) at ATLANTA (2-4) Line: 49ers minus 3 ½ Christian McCaffrey vs. Bijan Robinson in a matchup of All-Pro backs who are close friends and train together. The undefeated 49ers keep winning despite losing key players because they have Brock Purdy. The Falcons lost two games to start the season, won two in a row and have now lost two straight. Atlanta is 3-2 ATS in past five games against San Francisco. 49ERS: 22-20 TAMPA BAY (1-5) at CAROLINA (3-2) Line: Panthers minus 3 ½ Baker Mayfield is aiming to return for the Buccaneers, who have lost 12 of their past 15 games. The Bucs have played tough defence but their offence is among the bottom third. Bryce Young is playing his best football for the Panthers. He has 11 TDs and only two picks. PANTHERS: 23-20

DENVER (4-2) at ARIZONA (2-4) Line: Broncos minus 4 ½ Bo Nix is taking plenty of heat despite Denver’s winning record. Nix and the offence have to get on track. The Broncos have faced a tough schedule that doesn’t get easier after Arizona. The Cardinals beat the Rams on the road last week and have to carry that momentum into a difficult matchup. BRONCOS: 24-16 GREEN BAY (4-2) at DETROIT (3-2) Line: Lions minus 3 The Packers have won three in a row, the defence has been out and Josh Jacobs is coming back to boost the offence with Micah Parsons working toward his return. The Lions have the league’s worst defence that’s sometimes offset by a prolific offence. This one should be a shootout. LIONS: 30-26 LOS ANGELES RAMS (2-4) at LAS VEGAS (3-3)

Line: Rams minus 4 ½ The Rams haven’t played close to Super Bowl favourites. And, injuries are piling up with Davante Adams now going down for several weeks. But they still have Sean McVay, Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua and Aaron Donald. The Raiders have lost three in a row but Kirk Cousins is playing well so hold off on Fernando Mendoza. A defence that’s allowed 30-plus points three straight games has been the problem. BEST BET: RAMS: 31-20 DALLAS (2-4) at PHILADELPHIA (2-4) Line: Cowboys minus 4 ½ The Cowboys have an opportunity in a wideopen NFC East, but have had issues on defence and now a dynamic offence has sputtered. The Eagles are reeling and won’t have Jalen Hurts likely for the rest of the season. Tanner McKee makes his second straight start for Philadelphia. COWBOYS: 24-23

Rangers’ top prospect Sebastian Walcott delivers grand slam to headline four-RBI performance BASEBALL - FROM PAGE 1 a single, a stolen base and a run scored before returning to the plate to deliver the decisive blow. The Saguaros added two runs in the third inning and another in the fourth to complete the scoring in a game in which Walcott continued to contribute beyond his power at the plate. He grounded out in the third, reached on a fielding error in the fourth, then drew a walk and stole another base in the sixth before striking out in the seventh. He started at shortstop and batted second. Walcott’s approach remains centred on completing the fall campaign in good condition after a season that tested his resilience. Having missed

the first half of the regular season while recovering from offseason right elbow surgery, the 20-year-old is looking to finish the year healthy while continuing to build towards the next stage of his professional career. He entered Monday’s game against the Solar Sox with a .292 batting average, a .345 on base percentage and a .500 slugging percentage through six games. He had recorded one home run, nine RBIs and seven runs scored at that stage, with Friday’s performance adding another significant contribution to his fall numbers. The Saguaros followed their fifth consecutive victory with another win on Saturday and were scheduled to play again before press time. They stood at

8-3, tied for first place in the AFL standings, while seeking to defend the championship they won last season. Their next scheduled opponent was the Glendale Desert Dogs, with first pitch set for 4:30pm at Surprise Stadium. The 2026 league season runs through November 14. Walcott’s fall assignment comes after a year of considerable movement through the Rangers’ farm system. He began the season recovering from surgery before returning to action and working his way from Double-A to Triple-A. His strongest stretch came with the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders, where he hit .372 with a .426 on base percentage and a .674 slugging percentage in

September, recording four home runs and 16 hits. That surge earned him a promotion to the Round Rock Express in Triple-A, where he appeared in two games and collected two hits in eight at-bats. Across three teams during the 2026 season, the six foot four inch, 190lb infielder posted a .325 batting average, .401 on base percentage and .590 slugging percentage, with 10 home runs, 21 RBIs, 48 runs scored and 13 stolen bases. The AFL provides a further test for players considered among the leading prospects in professional baseball, bringing together talent from across the minor leagues for an autumn competition in Arizona. Walcott is participating for the second consecutive

year, another opportunity to measure his progress against highly regarded prospects from other organisations. After missing months of the regular season following surgery and still earning a late season promotion,
