Bahamian influencers get ‘fizzy’ with Grey Goose

T

he Bahamas’ leading social media influencers recently joined Grey Goose to celebrate the introduction of a limited-edition incarnation of the vodka brand’s iconic bottle.

The new bottle of Grey Goose Riviera, which honours the brand’s French heritage and a summer well-lived, is distributed in the Bahamas by Bristol Wine & Spirits.

The introduction of this signature bottle was complemented with last week’s launch of the summer drink ‘Le Grand Fizz’ that mixes Grey Goose with the aromatic elderflower, at the Harbourfront Restaurant, East Bay Street.

At the fun event, the vodka brand acknowledged premium local influencers, including persons like straw artist Keesha Pratt; Lisa Wallace, owner of Beat Studios; DJ Ignite; Chef Corey Smalls, owner of Flavors Catering; comedian Terrence “KhingKloud” Gilbert; entertainer Bodine Johnson; Cyril Saunders, managing partner of Shotz Photo Booths; cake designer Jessica Wilson, and others.

The limited edition bottle of Grey Goose Riviera is distributed in the Bahamas by Bristol Wine & Spirits. To make the “Le Grand Fizz” drink, you need: 1.0 oz Grey Goose Vodka, 0.5 oz St-Germain Liqueur, three squeezes of lime, and 2.0 oz club soda.

Directions: Measure and pour Grey Goose Vodka and St-Germain into red wine glass. Squeeze three wedges of lime into glass, and insert lime wedges into glass. Fill glass with ice, and top with measured amount of soda water. Stir contents and service with citrus fruits

interview She is one of the Bahamas’ most sought-after wedding photographers, and now, after winning a prestigious award, Lyndah Wells is garnering the attention of major international publications and media outlets. The UK native speaks to Felicity Ingraham about how a vacation to the Bahamas as a student unexpectedly set her on the path to today’s success.

B

ahamas-based Lyndah Wells is one of the most talked about names in the world of photography this week. Her photograph of a little boy at a wedding in Freeport, Grand Bahama, captured the hearts of international judges and landed her the “Fearless Photographer” award. She is beaming with pride today because since that award was granted last week her photo has been picked up by the international press and is putting her name on the map in a big way.

Her photograph was one of 204 that made the cut out of 9,000 entries from around the world. She was already excited for that honour when the Huffington Post featured the photo as its number one, while Buzzfeed pencilled her in at number two this week. Since then, Essence magazine, Board Panda and other media houses have carried the story, and Lyndah has seen a significant increase in traffic to her social media handles and her website, www.lyndahwells. com.

The “Fearless Photographer” award is chosen from a group of about 3,000 of some of the world’s best wedding photographers who are members of the organisation by the same name. They are primarily selected because they are willing to take risks, be creative and think outside of the box, and are knowledgeable and passionate about photography.

In the adorable shot, he seems quite shy of all the attention, but at the same time, overcomes those fears to show an

adorable smile and take the ring to the groom, even though the pillow is twisted sideways at the time. The wedding audience seemed captivated by the boy, and the essence of the wedding seems to have been captured in this one shot.

This is the kind of moment Lyndah lives for. She is much more concerned with capturing the emotion and feeling of a couple’s special day than anything else. Her unique and stunning images are such a hit that clients fly her in to various islands to make their wedding photography dreams come true.

“When I started, my focus was on detail and really pretty pictures; but now my focus is to tell a story creatively,” she told Tribune Weekend.

She changed her style from natural light to creative documentary photography and found that she was better able to tell the story of the bride and groom in this way. Knowing that social media mandates instant pictures and that “by the time you get home (from a wedding) a hundred pictures are posted”, she wanted her clients to “know why they paid for a photographer”.

“I want the client to look at their photos 30 years from now when the family grows and be excited and see and feel the story… it’s all about the emotion,” she said.

Lyndah may now be a star in the field of wedding photography, but it is not the genre she started in. As a matter of fact, she graduated from university with a degree in furniture design and technology and a diploma in residential interior design. During her university years, she took a 10-day vacation to the Bahamas

with schoolmates, and three days in to her trip in paradise she met the love of her life, Douglas Wells.

When she completed her studies, the UK native took the plunge into Bahamian waters, got married, and is now a wife and loving mother two girls, Layla and Sadie.

She found that the interior design market had not really caught on back then as it has now in the Bahamas. Because of that, jobs were few and far between. As fate would have it, she met Dave Mackey, a media mogul in Freeport. He took Lyndah under his wing. Initially, she worked part time, mostly carting around his photography equipment. On one occasion, she picked up his camera during a real estate shoot. Dave thought she was so good at it, he gave her opportunities to let her talent shine. Eventually, Lyndah saved up and purchased her own camera, and her love affair with photography began. She started out in fashion photography, but after meeting with two phenomenal women, her path changed and led her to wedding photography.

Erica Meus-Saunders enjoyed the fashion editorials Lyndah produced for her Nu Woman magazine, while destination weddings expert Marva Munroe was in love with Lyndah’s ability to deliver what her couples envisioned for their photos. These two women helped to open doors of opportunity for her, and Lyndah’s talent took her all the way through.

“Every wedding I shoot is critiqued by a colleague telling me what I should and shouldn’t be doing so that the next one I shoot I can improve and be better,” said Lyndah.

“I used to be afraid to show my work, but I realised it will only make you get better.”

She notes that the talent pool of photographers in the Bahamas is strong, and the support network is highly encouraging. She advises other photographers to join organisations and enter competitions because the quality of their work is often of global standard.

Express yourself Audience members take the stage

t’s all fun and good to go out with friends and watch some entertainment, but what about becoming the entertainment yourself? If you can let go of your inhibitions and tap into that inner artist or entertainer, you may just surprise yourself, especially if your friends are willing go up on stage with you.

That’s the kind of vibe that Expressions has been fostering since the event was launched several months ago at downtown’s Bistro Underground.

Princess Pratt wanted to create a space where people like herself – lovers of art, culture and entertainment – could merge and vibe with like minds and come up with beautifully performed works of art. Expect to hear artists freestyle to beats, or even musicians freestyling songs.

The event is seeing success, and its concept is catching on with young Bahamians, especially with October dedicated to breast cancer awareness sessions. The month started off with a dynamic trio of powerful vocalists: Renee Caesar, and Ophine and Tanisha Sweeting.

The floor is open to professional or amateur entertainers who just want to come together to enjoy wine, art, music and poetry.

Expressions is held every Wednesday at Bistro Underground starting at 8pm.

Admission is free.

When two worlds intersect...

‘Double Dutch’ artists explore postcolonial similarities and differences

he National Art Gallery’s recent “Re: Encounter” was just that – an encounter between two dynamic female artists, both with a passion for their life and work.

The “Re: Encounter” project brings together artists who have developed new artwork that speaks to postcolonial subjects.

Bahamian artist Dede Brown collaborated with Joiri Minaya from the Dominican Republic for an exciting new edition of the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas (NAGB) series “Double Dutch”.

Both artists gave very different presentations that nevertheless came together seamlessly. Each artist used feminised forms of representations found in nature as well as the female body to confront patriarchy, the rigidity of history and the stronghold and cautions of colonial narratives.

Dede’s display showed works of art with wood and aluminium. The focus was on the shoulders, neck and head – beautiful female images with paint, patterns and bare wood that were separated by the tension created by aluminium ribbons piercing through the head and neck. The pieces of wood hang from the ceiling and are full of movement.

They constantly twist and turn, giving you a new perspective on the art piece at every moment.

“I had hung a few of them in the studio – I have a very small studio – previously and I was so interested in the movement and how it could engage the viewer and what questions you could ask,” Dede explained.

“In the studio, the movement, the lighting, the shadows made it morph into something bigger. As it moved, the perspective changed. Initially, we – Joiri and I – had conversations about identity and we were giving each other little anecdotes about experiences we had. For example, being in residencies, sometimes they want to know where you are from. Sometimes the subjects are

awkward and uncomfortable but good to talk about... and we all seem to have these kinds of experiences from time to time.”

Joiri, who is based as an artist in New York City, created a floral fabric wall between the two expressions of art.

The wall had holes cut out, and viewers had to climb or duck to get into the next experience. She chose video as her medium. Her documentary told the chilling tale of a group of Haitian boys begging for food, standing on a little hill, peering over a high wall and fence with barbed wire. On the other side, cruise ship tourists to the Dominican

Republic are enjoying a relaxing day on the beach.

Joiri’s piece “Labadee” incorporates footage from a cruise ship with dialogue taken from the diary of Christopher Columbus before he made landfall in 1492 in the New World. She merges that with a contemporary account of a typical tourist visit to Labadee, Haiti.

Labadee is a port located on the northern coast of Haiti within the district of Cap-Haïtien in the Nord department.

of the all-inclusive and interchangeable Caribbean tourism landscape.

The NAGB stated: “Here in the Bahamas we can look towards Resort World, Bimini; Grand Lucayan, Freeport; Fowl Cay Resort in Exuma or our very own Atlantis on Paradise Island which straddles the delineation of what an all-inclusive is. In many ways, the privatisation of these lands and the economic exchange and inequity lends to the unsustainable development of tourism in the wider Caribbean. We see how the short and long-term ravages of the tourism industry have impacted national development, along with the effects on the psychology of the Bahamian public.”

NAGB Director Amanda Coulson was the host of the successful “Double

Dutch” launch, which was well-attended by local artists and the wider community. The panel discussion allowed the audience to engage with the artists before experiencing the “Re: Encounter” segment. Joiri and Dede touched on subjects including their inspiration for their pieces, and the social issues that both their countries have in common and what is different.

For this reporter, “Re: Encounter” touched on the beauty of the island people who inhabit this region, but also served as a cutting reminder of the reality of the social, economic, and the many other divides that exist.

The island of Hispaniola, for Joiri, is a completely different experience than for those born on the other half of the

island – Haiti. As Bahamians walked through the gallery and the “Re: Encounter” experience during the launch, they could not help but discuss the implications for the Bahamas due to the plight of the Haitian people.

“The xenophobia in the Dominican Republic is very strong,” Joiri admits.

“We could have a whole other panel discussion about this long and complex topic.”

The art community in the Dominican Republic has reached out to Haitian artists and collaborated over the years, she said, but she feels that some of her colleagues are not genuine in their efforts.

“In a way I have objections,” she said, noting that Dominican Republic artists seem to exploit their Haitian

counterparts, willing to bask in the glory of beautiful art collaborations, but not really respecting them for their craft.

“DR people are low key using Haitians for their work, and more from a perspective of instructing them,” Joiri said. “It’s mostly presented from the Dominican side. I don’t think it’s equal.”

“The conversation around exploitation and exhaustion are extended.

‘Re: Encounter’ offers us a moment to reconstruct and think critically about the things we choose to be witness to in our daily lives,” the NAGB stated.

“The work reckons with the immersive qualities of the condition of our colonial environment and the long lasting and powerful impact on our economic and national development. Minaya and Brown challenge meaning-making within post colonies; they bring sharp focus to our definition of self and the means by which the Caribbean countries are coming into our decolonisation and its failures and small triumphs.”

Dede Brown is an interdisciplinary artist who works in painting, photography, mixed media, sculpture and installation. Her work often focuses on depicting emotionally driven thoughts and narratives through portraiture and figurative drawings and paintings or sculpture. Many of her compositions are inspired by images of women in popular culture. More recently, she has begun exploring new subjects and mediums, venturing further into more experimental and conceptual works, which investigate various topics relating to human behaviour, experience and existence.

Joiri Minaya is a Dominican-American multi-disciplinary artist whose work deals with identity, otherness, self-consciousness and displacement.

Her work navigates binaries in search of “in-betweenness”, investigating the female body within constructions of identity, social space and hierarchies.

Born in New York, she grew up in the Dominican Republic.

“Double Dutch” supports the concept of bringing local, regional and diasporicbased artists together to work with a group of ideas personal, political and otherwise is crucial to the development of a contemporary Bahamian identity.

These artists are often divided linguistically and geographically but are united by common historical, economic or practice-based conditions. For this reason, the project attempts to create and maintain ties throughout the Caribbean, the wider diaspora, with the NAGB as pilot and conduit.

ANNUAL CONCH CRACKING FESTIVAL GOES NATIONAL WITH HELP FROM BTC

F

reeport, Grand Bahama – The usually quiet Grand Bahama community of McClean’s Town buzzed with activity on National Heroes Day, as scores of residents made the commute to the quaint East Grand Bahama settlement for the annual Conch Cracking Festival. As a lead sponsor of the 45th annual event, the Bahamas Telecommunications Company, was pleased to come on board as a supporter of this time honoured tradition.

Originating in 1972, the annual festival continues to attract locals and tourists from all over the world.

The day’s events kicked off around noon with the classic conch cracking, conch cleaning and conch eating competitions while the sweet sound of Bahamian music, courtesy of the Royal Bahamas Police Force Pop Band, wafted through the air.

Headlining the event was BTC’s own brand ambassador, D-MAC, who got the crowd dancing with a slew of his popular singles like “Dogs Don’t Bark at Park Car”, “Da Bush” and “Diggin”.

“This is exactly the kind of event that the Bahamas Telecommunications Company is proud to support,” said Northern Vice President Eldri Ferguson Mackey. “We’re constantly looking for opportunities to support initiatives that really exemplify things that are intrinsically Bahamian and there’s nothing more Bahamian than conch salad.”

and Sweetings Cay, all vying for the coveted floating conch trophy, a $700 cash prize, a brand new mobile device and the title of “Best Conch Cracker.”

This year’s contest also featured an international regular at the event, Bob Porter, an American who has been attending the McClean’s Town event for the past 15 years along with his wife.

Once all the conchs were cracked, Wilson Duncombe of Sweetings Cay was declared the overall winner in a record time of 5 min 15 sec. In a close second place, was Abaco contestant Carlton McIntosh 5 min 30 sec, while Joseph Tate rounded out the top three with an even 6 min.

“As a committee we appreciate the level of support we receive from the community and the public and so we’re working toward making this festival even bigger and better” explained Committee Chairman Kendall Leathen. “For us, that means including more activities for participants and hopefully creating a special document detailing the history and growth and development of the festival”.

In addition to providing this year’s prizes, BTC also provided free area Wi-Fi at the event and offered customers the opportunity to purchase BTC Top Up as well as discounts on various mobile devices.

BTC Junior Achievement company kicks off new calendar year BTC has kicked off a new Junior Achievement year with 80 bright and budding entrepeneurs from high schools across New Providence. This year’s company chose the name “BTC PULL UP”. The acronym means, “Progressive Unified Leaders Living Under Purpose”.

Executive Advisor Keva Bridgewater said: “We are looking forward to an exciting year with our new students. Our aim is to exceed everyone’s expectations, and finish as Company of the Year.”

The company will open its doors to the parents of the young stockholders on October 24 at the BCPOU Hall. This will give parents an opportunity to meet the Advisors and the Student Executive Board.

“BTC PULL UP” has also recently elected their president, Nah-Shan Rahming from Akhepran International Academy. Elections for the other executive board members commence next week followed by a discussion of products or services to be offered this year.

International food fest 2017 is ‘tremendous success’

A

stroll through the International Cultural Food and Wine Festival at the Botanical Gardens last weekend took persons on a culinary journey to exotic locations all around the world.

Starting with the home country on the northern lawn, festival-goers enjoyed Sky Juice, tasty teas, limeade, Mortimer Candies, as well as Junkanoo kabobs, and more.

Persons were then able to walk over to Cuba and the Dominican Republic, where the music was loud and energetic enough to get everyone dancing on the pathway. It was a sight to see, hundreds of persons of many different nationalities mixing and mingling all day long.

Highlights also included a concert that featured the Visage band in the Bahamian Village, Son del Solar on the main stage, and the Willis and the Illest band on the Jet Blue stage.

Fun sections and areas also included the 17-vendor Jamaican village, the Beer Garden, and national booths from Guyana, Haiti, Trinidad, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Belgium, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Asia, India, China, and newcomers Bermuda and Belize.

One festival-goer, Samantha Johnson, told Tribune Weekend: “I am here for the food obviously,” as she held a plate of griot from Haiti.

“I travel a lot to different places around the world and my biggest thing to do is try the restaurants wherever I am. I am a risk-taker when it comes to my belly, and sometimes I pay for it in the end but at least I get to try things out. What better place to be in the world than in my own backyard, trying food from all over the world. I am in heaven. Right now I am on griot, next up is the European section,” she said.

Over at the Beer Garden, Charlene Sands along with a group of girlfriends enjoyed Kalik cocktails like the “Hercules” and “Pink Front”.

“I was hoping the Beer Garden was an attraction they would bring back this year, and thankfully they did. I know there are many entrances to get into the festival, but I usually come in through the entrance that leads

directly into the Beer Garden. I did my walk around, but I don’t like to do too much walking; I mean it’s hot. So my friends and myself, we picked our little spot right here in the garden and we are making it a day. These are the type of events I enjoy, and they always make for a great day out,” said Charlene.

For festival-goer Nicole, her goal was to let the sun do it’s thing during the day and arrive later to catch the cool breeze and concerts during the evening hours.

“You’re only paying $10 and you get to see Visage and Willis and the Illest in the same atmosphere and setting; can’t beat that. I also enjoy coming around the 5.30 mark because at the time the sun is going down and it’s much cooler. I like to patronise our Bahamian artists whenever I can and I am happy the festival is giving them huge platforms such as this, to shine,” she said.

With the same energetic vibe, Maria attended with her whole family – her husband, sisters and children, who all found an activity that suited them best.

“There’s my husband over at the Beer Garden.

My sister and I are enjoying a few bites at the food stalls. My kids are in the play area, and we are all having a great time...I believe festivals should continue for a very long time in the country because they are literally for the whole family to enjoy. Next up for me is Jollification,” she said.

Janet Johnson, festival chair, said the festival is a perfect blend of cultures right here in the Bahamas.

“Once a year we get to come together as an international community to celebrate. Bahamians and foreign nationals that are domiciled here, whether through marriage or whether they have come to work and be a part of our community and society, making a contribution to the Bahamas,” said Ms Johnson.

She said the fact that the festival has now grown to spread throughout the north lawn and also into the gardens, shows the tremendous growth of the event.

“The festival is doing very well. When other festivals are not able to get up because they are not self-sustaining, this festival is self-sustaining.

The people who participate in it pay towards the operational cost, and this festival will be around for many years to come. The feedback has been tremendous and people feel it is very good value for money. They have their favourite booths.

Like Jamaica has grown from two or three booths, they now have 17. That is a huge village that they have created,” said Ms Johnson.

Music Vibes Tour wows hip-hop and reggae audience Bahamians get chance to attend Dominican Republic finale

residente and the Bahamian Brewery and Beverage Company (BBB) did not disappoint with their second instalment of the Presidente Music Vibes Tour. Returning to the National Beach Soccer Stadium last Saturday, the event showcased the hip hop stylings of Atlanta rapper Kent Jones and Jamaican reggae star Dexta Daps. The artists put on high-energy performances featuring their most popular hits ranging from Jones’ “Don’t Mind” to Dexta Dap’s “Shabba Madda Pot”.

The Bahamas leg of the Presidente Music Vibes Tour festival kicked off in September with international reggae artist Konshens and will culminate in a massive three-day event taking place next month at Festival Presidente.

November 3-5, international recording artists like Justin Timberlake, Ricky Martin, Carlov Vives and many more will electrify fans as they take over the Olympic Stadium in the Dominican Republic.

“The launch was so great and we’re happy Bahamians have continued to support the Presidente brand, the Music Vibes Tour concert series and the ‘Under the Cap’ promotion as well,” said Presidente Marketing Manager Manny Bartolo. “Now we’re looking forward to the main show in November and are excited to give our Bahamian supporters a chance to experience that as well.”

Over the past two weeks, fans of the Music Vibes Tour have actively participated in the Presidente and BBB ‘Under the Cap’ promotion, retrieving hundreds of codes found under the

bottle caps of each bottle of Presidente Beer and registering those codes via the official website at www.presidentebeer.com for a chance to attend the main event.

Multiple winners will be chosen to travel to the Dominican Republic and will do so in style courtesy of Presidente. t’s that time of the year when you can be whoever or whatever you choose to be.

With Halloween just around the corner, Bahamians are once shopping for spooky and fun costumes.

Angels, doctors, law enforcement officers, and superheroes are popular choices. And then there is the darker side – ghosts, goblins, scary clowns and Disney’s iconic Cruella de Vil – which is always appealing Movies are of course great sources of inspiration when choosing a costume. Every year you will see at least one Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Chucky, or a member of the cast of “American Horror Story”. Reality TV, too, has helped people get creative, and there have been some great interpretations of Kim and Kanye, or Beyonce and Jay Z. Donna Bowe, store manager at Party Land in the Harbour Bay Shopping Plaza, said Halloween is the shop’s number one season, and especially this year with DC and Marvel movies and shows like “The Walking Dead” inspiring people.

Excited to become the notorious “The Walking Dead” villain Negan for the upcoming weekend, one customer said: “Who doesn’t like ‘The Walking Dead?’ Me and Lucille gonna check out some hot spots for Halloween. I like to think this is a very creative costume and I am not going to see anybody dressed like I am. In the past I was everything from Shrek to the Joker, so I really put some thought into this one.”

Meanwhile Amanda Kemp’s is putting on her gauntlets to become “Wonder Woman”. For just one night, she will transform into the princess of the Amazons.

“Can’t go wrong with a costume that was one of the number one movies of the year. I have the legs for it so I am

ready. I still haven’t gotten the wig down pat yet, but there is still time to pull it off. I am attending a Halloween family function and I am ready,” said Amanda.

Customer Branae Gibson said while she has not yet settled on a costume, she fancies transforming herself into the silver-haired mother of dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen from “Game of Thrones”.

“I love Dany! I am a last minute person so I can see myself being stuck with ordering my costume very late and not getting it. But I will still look around town to see if I can even create the costume myself. I may just have to find myself a Jon Snow to complete this look,” said Branae.

Just what is that ‘Bad Ass’ collar she’s wearing around her neck? The appellation kinda loses meaning when you have to proclaim it like this.”

Alesha says: “LOL what?! No way is this OK, even for the simplest red carpet event. My favourite part of the look is actually the ‘bad ass’ collar – and that is it.”

Karin says: “This is just so effortlessly cool. And it looks comfy to boot! I know, one can almost hear ‘Beetlejuice’ being whispered three times, but the black and white stripes really work here, especially with the loose, strappy top.

Alesha says: “My fave! Now this is my kinda outfit – the wide-leg pants, plain blouse and red lip. She completely slays this outfit. Love that she kept it simple with the hair and accessories as well.”

Bahamian author is ‘bruised, not broken’

uquesa Dean believes it is her purpose in life to help persons who have lived through traumatic experiences.

And in her most recent book, “Bruised but Not Broken”, she writes about a 21-day journey to overcoming challenges and limitations to achieve your dreams. Filled with stories from her life, the book explores Duquesa’s darkest times and how she used those experiences to help others.

“The message I want readers to walk away with is that there is a silver lining in every situation. In order to find it we must release the victim attitude and reframe our thoughts; create a plan to overcome whatever we are facing and then take action. In the midst of my circumstances now with my mom recently passing away, I am referring to the blueprint to help me take the necessary action to deal with the grief and not get stuck,” said Duquesa told Tribune Weekend.

Speaking about her late mother, Gennie Dean, who was the founder of the Caring & Sharing Support Group for cancer survivors, Duquesa said she was considered a legend by those whose lives she touched.

“My mom pushed me to live my purpose and she challenged me to always be selfless and to not be ashamed of my experiences, but rather to use them to help others overcome. At the book launch, before her passing, she beamed with pride. She died knowing that I will preserve and protect her legacy and also build my own,” said Duquesa.

She said the new book was penned with the idea in mind of not only helping women, but also men, and boys and girls everywhere. Helping them to understand that no matter what setbacks they may have faced in the past or the difficult situations they may currently find themselves in, there is hope and opportunity to transform their lives.

“It is my hope that as a result of reading this book people are inspired to overcome challenges, drop limitations and achieve dreams. Achieving your dreams and goals will impact the world. This is a fact. People everywhere are making an impact in the world and changing their own lives when they achieve their dreams. Whatever your dreams may be, when you accomplish them, you change, and when you change, the world around you changes. Every aspect of the book is realistic, practical advice and real life examples,” said Duquesa.

The initial feedback for the book has been positive. One reader commented: “I just picked up your book to read and was kind of afraid because I figured there will be things in it that will force me to think about my situation carefully, and I didn’t want to. Just so you know, your book is awesome and it resonates with me in so many ways.”

Leila O’Brien: A creative flower in full bloom Internationally published author launches first book ‘Candy Land is in Trouble’

S

he is one of the country’s youngest published authors and has already achieved international acclaim. And this Saturday, nine-year-old Leila O’Brien will launch her first book, “Candy Land is in Trouble!”, at Louis & Steens New Orleans Coffeehouse on West Bay Street,withareadingbytheyoungauthor at 2pm.

The more Leila reads, the more she writes, blossoming and flourishing like the beautiful flower she is, inside and out.

With loose leaf paper on her desk and pen in hand, the third grader’s vivid and creative imagination bursts forth colourfully, naturally and quickly.

As an avid reader, at the tender age of seven her creative writing teacher at the time, Carly Burrows at Genesis Academy, discovered she had a way with words. Even more, she discovered Leila had an innate ability to clearly and articulately create new, exciting worlds full of adventure we all wish we could escape to.

Leila’sbedroom,withitsseabluewalls, a reading lamp and personal library with treasured paperback and hardback jewels piled high around the room are read and re-read, makes the perfect incubator for her flamboyant imagination.

Her parents, Tariq and Cherran O’Brien, gently encourage and feed her voracious appetite for words, reminding

Oftenreadingmultiplebooksatatime, Leila’s current reading interests span mystery, comedy, historical to women’s rights, and art and crafts books.

“I really like Rachel Renee Russell who writes the ‘Dork Diaries’ series; Carolyn Keene, who writes the ‘Nancy Drew’ series, and Jeff Kinney the author of ‘The Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ series,” said Leila.

In 2016, the Principal’s Honour Roll student penned “Candy Land is in Trouble!” centred around an unexpected visitor who shows up and turns Candy Land upside down. The page-turner has readers wondering: can the citizens of Candy Land protect the home they

love so dearly? The story earned her a runner-up award in the Commonwealth Writers of the Bahamas Young Writers Competition in the 7-9 age category. As a member of the Commonwealth Writers of the Bahamas Association, Leila was invited to read her book at the 11th annual Writing Awards in February of this year.

Additionally, she was awarded first prize for the 2017/18 poetry competition 7-9 age category for her poem, “A Pirate and a Mermaid”. She also entered several international competitions and is awaiting word on the results.

“Candy Land is in Trouble!” is now available in bookstores and online through Amazon.com, and has made Leila one of the country’s youngest published authors with international acclaim.

“As her parents, we were shocked and ecstatic at the same time because she was just doing something that she liked to do.

We then became very thankful to God for allowing us to see and recognise this gift and also grateful for others around her that helped to foster this talent, like her teachers, her school, as well as the

writing and literary associations that also poured into her and encouraged her,” said Cherran.

Leila dreams of turning her books into movies and becoming a fashion designer one day. In the meantime, she said: “I also want to make ‘Candy Land is in Trouble’ a series, I have some ideas for a second story already.”

Her encouragement to other budding writers: “They should read books that they are interested in, like animal books if they like animals. That’s how it starts.

They should write whatever they want to write about, not what they are told to write about. They have to like what they are writing about.”

With each book purchase on Saturday, patrons of Louis & Steens New Orleans Coffeehouse will receive a Candy Land Hot Chocolate or a Candy Land Frappe.

The joy of herbs One of the most rewarding experiences of growing your own produce is wandering out to your herb garden and culling whatever you need for your cooking and salad needs, says Jack Hardy

W

henever you scan through a recipe book you get a feeling of comfort when you know that any herbs likely to be called for in a dish are right at hand.

But herbs do present minor problems. Those we use often we can grow in numbers, but those numbers are still small for the home gardener compared to the quantity of seeds in a packet. Then there are large herbs with abundant leaves – sage comes to mind – where one plant will more than suffice for an average household. The home

Generally speaking, one seedling usually costs about the same as a packet of seeds. Always err on the side of plenty.

More than any other garden produce, herbs are often raised in containers.

Always grow your herbs in pots at least one size larger than you think you need and rarely less than three gallon capacity. The larger the pot the easier it is to keep the soil moist.

First of all there are the ‘must have’ herbs that are used very often. These include parsley, thyme, rosemary, chives and basil. I use oregano often but rarely grow it because recipes almost always call for oregano in dried form. I do grow sage but still keep a jar of rubbed Dalmation sage in my pantry for most of my needs.

Parsley is the closest we get to a universal herb, employed in cuisines world wide. The seeds contain an inhibitor that delays germination so it is a good idea to soak the seeds in several changes of water for two days or so before planting. Always use Italian straight-leaf parsley for cooking.

Curly leaf parsley is only for decorative purposes and even then is somewhat passé. Start your seeds in a seed tray

and transplant to the herb garden or pot when the seedlings are healthily bushy and about four inches tall. Keep parsley well watered but do not use a saucer under your container as parsley also likes good drainage. More plants are killed by soggy pots than any other cause.

A single Italian parsley plant in a three to four gallon pot will grow two feet tall and bushy and provide abundant leaves when attacked with scissors.

Still grow several because many recipes call for bunches of parsley. Are you under the impression parsley is fairly tasteless? Make a béchamel sauce and add a generous amount of chopped parsley leaves. You will be surprised how strongly the flavour of parsley comes through.

Thyme is the one herb a Bahamian kitchen cannot do without. It goes into virtually every savoury meal. Take time to plant your tiny seeds individually into a seed tray. I use the point of a paring knife to plant each seed, wiping the blade clean after each application.

The seeds need light to germinate so just put them on the surface of your potting medium and press in gently.

Water with a mist setting until the plants are established.

When the seedling is bushy and beginning to get bark on its main stem,

transplant it to your herb garden or a three-gallon pot. At this point you must exercise restraint and not clip any stems away; if you need thyme you must buy some fresh from the store. You thyme plant should only be used when it is quite large and healthy, at least about eight inches tall. When that time comes you should only cut the stems you need from the outside of the plant, never from the middle.

The minimum number of thyme plants you must have is three. Use one of the plants for your culinary needs and allow the other two to grow undisturbed. After a month or so go onto the second plant, and so on. Clipping at random from all three plants is anarchy, at least until they are fully mature and resemble small trees rather than herbs.

If you grow rosemary in a pot it should be at least five gallons, and bigger is better. As for thyme, exercise restraint while the plant is young.

The time will soon come when you can cut off whole branches to put on the barbecue for an authentic Jamaican jerk or smoked turkey.

A pot of chives lasts forever, properly maintained. You can grow your other herbs in black plastic nursery pots but chives should be grown in the classiest pot you own. Sow your chives about two inches apart and resist the temptation to overcrowd the pot. Leftover chives? Plant another pot. Although chives should not be cooked they can be added to omelette eggs before they hit the pan. And, of course, chives can be chopped and sprinkled on virtually any savoury meal.

Genoa basil is enormously popular so grow plenty. When you have an overabundance, make pesto and freeze it. If you have a smaller amount that you will use soon, put the pesto into a plastic container and pour a layer of olive oil on the top. When time to use, just stir the olive oil into the pesto.

These days I am using more Thai basil than Genoa. The licorice flavour of Thai basil is intense and a little goes a long way. Pesto made with Thai basil leaves is a whole new experience.

‘Victoria & Abdul’ illuminates only half the title VICTORIA & ABDUL RUNNING TIME: 111 MINS

S

top us if this sounds familiar: A tall, dark, bearded servant of rough breeding comes from far away to suddenly charm a grumpy, widowed Queen Victoria and thus upend Britain’s royal court at the turn of the 20th century.

You were perhaps thinking of the film “Mrs Brown,” starring Judi Dench as the monarch and Bill Connolly as her Scottish underling, John Brown?

Well, hold on. A new movie has come along exactly 20 years later with an eerily similar plot. Either Victoria was a creature of habit in her attachments or her filmmakers are.

Substitute Connolly with Ali Fazal and you get “Victoria & Abdul,” a film about the then-most powerful woman on earth’s second unusually intimate relationship with a commoner. In this case, a Muslim from India in 1887.

Fascinatingly, Dench is back as the monarch, two decades after she played Victoria and earned an Oscar nomination for it. It’s a privilege to watch her revisit the crusty, we-are-not-amused queen, who is now in the twilight of her life. Dench is riveting, unsentimental, impatient and gloriously brittle. Sometimes all she does is offer an irritated sigh, speaking volumes. “Everyone I loved has died and I just go on and on,” she cries.

Dench is well supported — the cast includes the marvelous Eddie Izzard, the late Tim Pigott-Smith and the imperious Michael Gambon — and the pomp and highly choreographed English ceremonialism is captured

beautifully by director Stephen Frears, who knows a thing or two about royalty, having directed Helen Mirren in “The Queen.” Much of this film is composed of stuffy royal banquets with hundreds of servants scurrying about or soaring landscapes with hundreds of servants scurrying around.

There’s only one major problem: The man at the centre, Abdul Karim.

He remains a blank canvas, his motives unexplored, his interior or domestic life uncaptured. He is called “the brown John Brown” and offers no riposte. The title of the film promises us two people but we only get one.

Perhaps screenwriter Lee Hall (”War Horse,” ‘‘Billy Elliot”) meant to leave him a cypher, allowing the English to try to define him, but that’s being generous. It’s hard to leave this film and not think that Spike Lee’s concept of “magical Negroes” needs to be expanded for other people of colour.

The movie is based on journalist Shrabani Basu’s book “Victoria & Abdul: The True Story of the Queen’s Closest Confidant,” which told of Victoria’s close friendship with an Indian servant sent to the court with the sole task of offering a gift of a ceremonial coin. The filmmakers have

taken factual liberties — the film is “based on real events... mostly,” which is very cute but meaningless.

What does Karim think of colonialism, of English state-sponsored brutality toward his people? We never know.

Mid-way through the film, Karim has moved permanently to England and become the queen’s spiritual adviser, startling the court with his outsized influence. She will have none of it, siding always with her strong, silent, Indian beefcake. That also sounds familiar: Check out “The Green Mile” or “The Legend of Bagger Vance,” which also feature non-white characters with mystical powers employed entirely for the benefit of white leads.

The filmmakers knew in 2017 they couldn’t ignore the horrors of empire so it’s left to actor Adeel Akhtar, who plays Karim’s more radicalised companion, to carry the flag of nationalism and anti-colonialism. It’s a pity we never know what his friend, who has the queen under his influence, thinks.

Halloween at the National Art Gallery Free screening of ‘Devil’s Backbone’ sets spooky tone

I

F you are someone who revels in all things spooky that the Halloween season brings with it, but are not necessarily into the whole dressing up aspect, then the National Art Gallery of Bahamas’ upcoming event may be just the right outing for you.

The art gallery will be celebrating its Halloween extravaganza a few days earlier this year with the screening of a film that is more than just a good ghost story. NAGB is inviting members of public to view “The Devil’s Backbone”, a Gothic tale told by the master of the macabre, Guillermo del Toro. The screening begins at 7pm on Thursday, October 26.

“The Devil’s Backbone” is a beautiful film that slowly draws viewers into its frightening grip. It centres around a 12-year-old boy who is sent to a haunted orphanage when his father dies.

The Mexican director del Toro perfectly balances fear with intrigue and presents a Gothic tale that puts a human face to our fears.

“Guillermo del Toro is an amazing filmmaker and he says this is his most personal film,” Amanda Coulson, director of NAGB, told Tribune Weekend.

also educate, and this checks all the boxes,” she said.

The screening is free, open to the public and the film is rated R, so inappropriate for children under the age of 17, unless they are accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

“NAGB really tries to bring free programming to the community and to give everybody a reason to come to our wonderful property and building. If you think you’re not into art, I bet you would be surprised and enjoy the setting under the stars. It will be a scary, but also a great night out and a way to celebrate Halloween without the costume,” said Ms Coulson.

The NAGB’s film series began last year as the “Summer Film Series”.

Han Solo Star Wars spinoff film finally has a title

he young Han Solo Star Wars spinoff film finally has a title: “Solo: A Star Wars Story.”

Director Ron Howard announced the title Tuesday in a Twitter video celebrating production wrap on the anthology film starring Alden Ehrenreich as the grumpy space smuggler originated by Harrison Ford.

The film also stars Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke and Thandie Newtown and focuses on Han and Chewbacca before they joined the rebellion.

The film has had some wellknown production turmoil.

Deep into the shoot directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller abruptly left the project and were replaced by Howard.

“Solo: A Star Wars Story” is set for a May 25, 2018, release.

The master of candid photography

Sir Christopher Ondaatje discusses the brilliant humanist images of the influential French photographer who pioneered street photography.

“I

n 1932 I had just discovered the Leica.

It became the extension of my eye, and I have never been separated from it since I found it. I prowled the streets all day, feeling very strung-up and ready to pounce, determined to ‘trap’ life – to preserve life in the act of living.

Above all, I craved to seize, in the confines of one single photograph, the whole essence of some situation that was in the process of unrolling itself before my eyes.” – Henri Cartier-Bresson, “The Decisive Moment” (1952)

The two people who most influenced my photography (which was probably responsible for my early wildlife books being published at all) were Terence Michael Shortt – the ornithologist

whose intimate portraits of birds gained him worldwide recognition, and Henri CartierBresson, who is still regarded as being the master of candid photography. Shortt told me to focus on the eye of the animal or human and try to capture the expression. Cartier-Bresson taught me to grasp the moment of action that will never repeat itself. I learned to look for the ‘accident of genius’ – something that you either achieve or fail in any photograph or painting. It is something that charges the ambition of the artist.

Henri Cartier-Bresson was born in Chanteloup-en-Brie, Seine-etMarne, France, on August 22, 1908.

He was the oldest of five children.

His father was a well-to-do textile manufacturer and his mother from a wealthy cotton merchant family from Normandy. His parents supported his early experiments in photography, but hoped he would eventually join the family business. But he was terrified of this prospect and the ensuing responsibility. He was strong-willed and preferred to sketch and to read books; Dostoevsky, Rimbaud, Nietzsche, Freud, Proust and Marx.

In 1927, when he was 19, he entered a private art school and the Lhote Academy – the Parisian studio of the cubist painter and sculptor André Lhote. He also studied with the society portraitist Jacques Emile Blanche, and his interest in modern art was fused with an admiration for

the Renaissance masters: van Eyck, Masaccio and Piero della Francesca.

Later Cartier-Bresson was to say that Lhote taught him “photography without a camera”.

Curiously, as Andrew Robinson, the noted author and biographer, said in his book “Sudden Genius?

The Gradual Path to Creative Breakthroughs”: “Cartier-Bresson, a famously paradoxical man, consistently asserted that he had never been interested in photography!

His actions and behaviour over his lifetime bear out this astonishing claim ...Painting, not photography, was his passion as a child, and in the late 1920s he trained as a painter at an academy of fine art. He took up photography as his main pursuit only when he acquired a Leica camera in 1932. After three years of concentrated shooting, he turned away from photography towards film-making, and did not return to it full time until 1944, with a series of photo-portraits of French artists and writers, including Matisse. Not until 1947, with his breakthrough exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and his co-founding of the agency Magnum Photos, did he regard himself as a professional photographer.

Even then, he always left the printing of his negatives to others; the darkroom and the developing techniques never appealed to him.”

a second, and that’s the moment of creation.”

Finally, as Andrew Robinson relates, around 1970 Cartier-Bresson, now in his early 60s, abandoned his photographic career at his zenith.

In the remaining three decades he focused all his creative drive on his first love: painting and drawing, and in 1975 he held his first art exhibition in New York.

“His apparent volte-face looked like something of a betrayal of art photography by one of its founding figures.

He was all too aware that his work with pencil and brush never equalled his work with a camera.”

But Cartier-Bresson’s earlier “discovery” of the camera is a story worth repeating. In 1929, his air squadron commandant placed him under house arrest for hunting without a licence. There, at Le Bourget, he met the American publisher and expatriate Harry Crosby who interested him in photography and gave him his first camera. There, at Crosby’s home Le Moulin du Soleil, near Paris, the two men immersed themselves in photographic exploration. CartierBresson, also embracing Crosby’s open attitude to sex, embarked on an intense sexual relationship with Crosby’s wife Caresse. Two years after Crosby’s suicide, his affair with Caresse Crosby ended in 1931, leaving him saddened and grief-stricken.

He read Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” and escaped to Côte d’Ivoire in French colonial Africa where he survived by shooting wild animals and selling the meat to natives. He contracted blackwater fever and

had to return to France, but he learned much from his hunting methods which he later used in photography.

Recuperating in France, Cartier-Bresson was inspired by a photograph of three naked young African boys running into the water on the edge of Lake Tanganyika by a Hungarian photo-journalist Martin Munkacsi. He stopped painting and concentrated on his photography.

“I suddenly realised that a photograph could fix eternity in an instant.”

It was after this that he acquired his Leica camera with a 50mm lens, which he used for a great many years. He had his first

He also had some of his work published in Harper’s Bazaar. When he returned to France he was hired

by Jean Renoir (Auguste Renoir’s

son) who was now a hailed film director. He acted and assisted in his films Partie de campagne (1936) and La Règle du jeu (1939).

It was Renoir who helped CartierBresson understand what it was like to be on the other side of the camera.

Continued from page 23 In 1937, he married the Javanese dancer Ratna Mohini and lived in humble quarters in Paris. It was also the year when he covered the coronation of George VI for Regards – the French weekly magazine. Not focusing on the King, he focused instead

on faces of the subjects lining the streets of London. Two years later, when World War II broke out, he enlisted as a corporal in the French army and was captured a year later by the Germans and spent 35 months as a prisoner-of-war doing forced labour. Eventually escaping, he worked for the French underground

covering first the Occupation and then the Liberation.

Rumoured to have been killed, a film made for the American Office of War Le Retour about returning French prisoners spurred a retrospective of his work at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1947. It coincided with his first book,

“The Photographs of Henri Cartier-Bresson.”

“It was the success of the Museum of Modern Art exhibition in New York in February-April 1947 that gave Cartier-Bresson, by his own reckoning, the confidence to break through into full-time photography,” writes Andrew Robinson in “Sudden Genius?”.

“The New York exhibition with its catalogue is generally regarded as the ‘decisive moment’ of Cartier-Bresson’s career. ‘The Decisive Moment’ itself would be a public revelation of all he had taught himself about photography between 1932 and 1946.”

Early in 1947, CartierBresson, with Robert Capa, David “Chim” Seymour, William Vandivert and George Rodger founded Magnum Photos – a cooperative picture agency owned by its members. Assignments were distributed to the owners: Rodger covered Africa and the Middle East; “Chim” Seymour covered Europe; Cartier-Bresson was assigned to India and China;

and Vandivert worked in America. Capa was sent to wherever there was an immediate news project.

Cartier-Bresson, travelling to Asia with his wife, achieved international recognition for his coverage of India’s Independence in 1947 and Mahatma Gandhi’s funeral in 1948. He covered the end of the Kuomintang administration and the beginning of the Maoist People’s Republic in the 1949 China Civil War. He witnessed and photographed the birth of independence from the Dutch in Dutch East Indies (Indonesia); and photographed the final moments of Ramana Maharishi and his Ashram in Tamil Nadu. Far from being a casual lucky witness to events, it became clear that Cartier-Bresson, together with Magnum Photos, had planned their coverage of major international events with a thoroughness that deserved the acclaim they achieved.

In 1952, Cartier-Bresson published his book “Images à la sauvette” whose English edition was titled “The Decisive Moment” – taken from a quotation by Cardinal de Retz (1613-1679), the French churchman and agitator, in his introduction at the beginning of the book: “Il n’y a rien dans ce monde qui n’ait un moment decisive” (There is nothing in this world that does not have a decisive moment). The timeless photographic images are a reminder of the genius of the great French photographer who died in Céreste in Provence, France. on August 3, 2004 aged 95. He is buried in the local cemetery nearby in Montjustin.

The Rev Chas C Wakefield remembers the Nassau Grammar School Forgotten facts Paul C Aranha

I

found this eyewitness report (much abridged) of life in Nassau in a 1916 quarterly report that the Anglican Church sent to its supporters in England. You’ll see that education has become more sophisticated, and far more costly, over the intervening years. The Rev Chas C Wakefield writes: “In December next, it will be exactly fifty years since, without a day’s warning, I was suddenly pitch-forked into the office of Headmaster of the Nassau Grammar School.

The school had been started by Bishop Venables in 1864, when, for quite ten years, there had been no higher education for boys in Nassau.

A former attempt, under the Rev J S Hildebrand, had come to an end in 1854, after a life of only two years and, earlier than this, there had been King’s College, under the Revs Daniel Darnell, J Fletcher, and others. That school was held in the western part of what is now the Royal Victoria Hotel, erected for the purpose.

The steamer, which brought me from England in November 1866, brought also a letter to Mr Todd, the then master, telling him to proceed, at once, to England. I had come for a short sojourn, as Bishop Venables’ guest but, rather than let the school be closed for three months, the Bishop begged me to keep the boys together, until Mr Todd’s return. Much against my will and judgment, I agreed, little thinking that it would be my ‘job’, with a short break, for the next twenty years.

Well do I remember Bishop Venables taking me to see the school, on the day of my arrival. It was held in the airy and spacious Church Hall that we used to call the coolest place in Nassau.

This visit was on a Friday and, on the following Monday, I took charge of the school, together with the parish of St Mary the Virgin, where the church building lay in ruins, after the hurricane of the preceding October.

It was a new life to me, for I had never before engaged in tuition, but I was abundantly helped by two most excellent and efficient masters. Mr Castell was a native of Oxford. He was scarcely more than a lad, and the Bishop had brought him to Nassau, to do layman’s work, until he should be old enough to enter at S Augustine’s, Canterbury. After completing his course at Canterbury, he returned to Nassau and, for a time, I handed the school over to his charge.

The third master was Mr Artrell, a very intelligent Bahamian and a born teacher.

The nearly 50 boys were, as a rule, a nice lot and I fancy they, and their parents thought me strict. But there was no other choice, until it was established whether boys or masters were to rule.

In intelligence I should say that they generally equalled lads of their age in England.

I think that old boys will bear me out, when I say that we worked. There was no slacking allowed. Absolute

punctuality was the rule, hours were long, and holidays few and limited.

When the cathedral clock had struck the last note of nine, a bell tinkled and, at the order of “stand”, school began, with military precision. I think we had a wonderful discipline — indeed without it we could have done nothing.

Our hours were from 9 (later 9.30) to 12, followed by a recess of half-anhour, and from 12.30 to 2.30.

As to our curriculum, whether or not we attained a high standard, we always aimed at it. In addition to the ordinary English subjects, we worked hard at Latin and French. I think French was popular and my boys were particularly apt at mathematics. A great feature was map drawing. Some of their productions were absolutely perfect. A marked feature of most of the boys was the facility with which they committed things to memory.

amount; brothers came at reduced terms; certain promising sons of poor parents were admitted free. The strain of school fees was great and, as soon as possible, a boy had to earn his own bread. Many became leading men in the Bahamas.

I have never regretted my long spell of work at the Nassau Grammar School. In many ways the results may have fallen short of one’s hopes, but I do not think the time was wasted. For twenty years, one could never accuse oneself of idleness, for the stress of work was unremitting.

It would be a happiness to me, if more of my old boys would occasionally gladden me with a letter. Their names and faces, and many little incidents connected with their boyhood and school life, are indelibly imprinted upon my memory.”

Introducing the BHS board for 2017/18

T

he Bahamas Humane Society recently held their annual general meeting and the new board of 20172018 was elected. They are: Amanda Myers, Ann Marie Davis (treasurer), Kyla Ralston, Tony Appleyard (assistant treasurer), Kim Aranha (president) , Charlotte Albury (vice president), Metta MacMillian-Hughes (legal advisor), Lindsay Panning, Sandra Cooke, Dr Val Grant, Dr Amanda Pinder, Laura Kimble, Patricia Vazquez and BHS Chaplain Archdeacon Keith Cartwright.

The board is comprised of a group of professional and dedicated animal enthusiasts. We have two independent veterinarian doctors who are in private practice on our board. Both Dr Val Grant of the Palmdale Veterinary Clinic and Dr Amanda Pinder of Pinder’s Paws are experienced and caring individuals who assist the BHS with contacts and professional support that is indispensable.

Ann Marie Davis and Tony Appleyard both have a wealth of assistance to offer on the finance side, as they are experienced accountants and provide valuable back up to the BHS’ very capable and highly skilled accountant Donna Kiraze. On a side note: Donna practically grew up at the BHS as she is the younger daughter of long-time volunteer Carol Brogden, who many of us remember as a staunch and dedicated supporter of animals rights in the Bahamas.

Amanda Myers, a manager of the family business, Fox Hill Nursery, and Kyla Ralston of Kyla Ralston & Associates Ltd (property management services), both bring to the board great landscaping and building maintenance knowledge, business acumen, coupled, of course, with a love of all animals.

his two-year-old female has been at the shelter for almost six months and is one of many brown potcakes available for adoption.

Brown Girl was found one morning, tied to the Bahamas Humane Society’s gate – a far better fate than being abandoned in the bush. She’s very mellow and has gotten along well with her various kennel mates during her time at the BHS. Right now, she’s rooming with Jason, a former Pet of the Week who is still unadopted. If you’re looking for a pair, they’d be happy to be homed together! Brown Girl would like you know that she doesn’t qualify for the ‘Free Teenage Pup’ special on now, but don’t let that stop you from considering her. She looks forward to getting to know you. Laura is also the creator of “Bahamas Pet Friendly Real Estate” page, where all animal owners can find residences listed that allow animals on the premises.

Sandra Cooke is owner and manager of Pet Heaven on Shirley Street.

Sandra has a wealth of knowledge with dogs and cats, grooming, boarding and acquiring supplies.

Metta MacMillian-Hughes of Len-

nox Paton & Co is a very experienced lawyer, who, amongst many other things, participated in drafting the revised licences for captive dolphins and legislation relative to Animal Cruelty and Dangerous Dogs.

Patricia Vazquez is a highly talented nature photographer whose work can be found in collections all over the world. She takes weekly photographs of our animals for adoption featured on the BHS Facebook page and is very involved with fund raising for the BHS. Charlotte Albury is the vice presi-

dent, whose years of work at John Bull made evident her management skills and problem-solving capabilities. She has been vice president for three years and brings her fundraising skills to the table.

Myself, I have now been president for the past 10 years, replacing Betty Kelly Kenning after many years of leadership. They were big shoes to fill indeed. My passion for animals and the environment serve me well as president of this very worthy organisation.

Archdeacon Keith Cartwright is our chaplain. He is always available for spiritual support, but is also very knowledgeable in all forms of construction, as shown frequently when he goes to the southern islands after a storm to coordinate reconstruction. Archdeacon Cartwright holds the only church service for animals on the island of New Providence: the Blessing of the Animals in honour of St Francis of Assisi. This service will be held at St Christopher’s Church, Lyford Cay, at 4pm on Sunday, November 5. Everybody is welcome to attend.

This year, the BHS said a sad and grateful goodbye to two long-serving members: Lissa McCombe of Windermere Spa, who had served for close to 10 years, faithfully helping in so many ways and making amazing rescues often single-handedly. And Patricia Leigh-Wood, proprietor of Jacaranda House and founding chairman of Eleuthera all that Jazz Festival, who served as chairman of the BHS Horse Committee. She spent countless hours in the sun at surrey horse inspections, and in cabs’ board meetings representing the BHS and doing her utmost to improve the conditions of the Nassau-based surrey horses.

Both Patricia and Lissa have contributed greatly to the betterment of animal’s existence in the Bahamas and the BHS recognises their amazing contributions with great gratitude.

The new board is now in place and ready, willing and able to continue to strive for more successful stories, more fundraising, and this year we are seriously targeting more membership.

November is our grand raffle month and we are hoping that with the amazing prize of $10,000 of groceries, generously donated by Super Value, we will bring in more funds to enable us to do even more.
