No business like show business New burlesque production recreates Broadway in the Bahamas

However, local entertainment company Jam Productions is seeking two bring the concepts to life with a uniquely Bahamian touch and tone.

Jam Productions is back with their third annual showcase entitled “Rivals”, set for October 25-26 at the Dundas Centre for the Performing Arts, with a burlesque themed showcase.

As has been the case with previous Jam Productions shows, the performance will feature classic and big Broadway tunes. The company prides itself on being one of the only theatre companies to showcase Broadway-style performances here in The Bahamas.

This is the third annual showcase produced and directed by Jaynelle McPhee, CEO of Jam Productions.

This year’s showcase will feature a set depicting an audition room where a theatre producer is seeking leads for an upcoming Broadway show.

“The showcase will

take a complete turn, and a fight begins to break out between two female characters Tammy White and Roxanne Winters,” said Ms McPhee.

“Tammy is considered an industry brat, but her feathers are ruffled when Roxanne, a chick with an adventurous past, now steps up and takes a stab at performing for a Broadway show. Each one has a special audition to perform for the director and only one of the two will get it. Who will it be? You have to come and find out.”

Ms McPhee also said she wants to bring back the cultural elements of playwriting and performance, but on an entirely new level.

“Rivalry is a common theme in show business, especially in the competitive world of Broadway.

Everyone is trying to be the best and to secure the

best job. Jam Productions has translated and transported that theme to The Bahamas’ present-day entertainment industry. The audience will see entertainers go head-tohead vying for the lead role and experience their highs and lows along the way.”

For the two nights, Jaynelle said the Dundas well be transformed to look and feel like an old Hollywood theatre. And not only will guests be awed by the transformation of the Dundas, she assured readers, but they will also be astounded by “the pure talent exhibited by the Bahamian performers”.

“This country has a lot of talented individuals. We have cast dance professionals, exceptional singers, phenomenal actors and persons that are gifted in all three aspects,” said Ms McPhee.

A percentage of proceeds will go towards Bahamians who were affected by Hurricane Dorian and Grand Bahama. Doors will open at 7.30pm on both nights for a 8pm showtime.

He’s just won gold in Qatar and hopes to do the same at the Tokyo Olympics.

But until then, the track and field star tells Cara Hunt how he spends his free time: binge-watching ‘Stranger Things’, making homemade spaghetti, and connecting with his Abaconian family members in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.

hen Steven Gardiner took to the blocks in the finals of the 400-metre race in the IAAF World Championships, he carried not just his own medal hopes in his heart, but those of the entire country.

The track and field meet was held in Doha, Qatar from September 27 to October 6, just weeks after Hurricane Dorian slammed into Steven’s home island of Abaco and also Grand Bahama.

And as he took to the track, he said he knew his country was desperate for good news following the destruction wrought by the monster storm.

“I definitely wanted to have a good race for the Bahamas.

It was so stressful because I am from Abaco and I didn’t hear from my own family for a week after the storm. My coach actually gave me time off to clear my head and he helped me to go online and search the lists of the survivors and the missing and look for

knew that I had more to give and I had a day’s break before I had to run again and I just gave it everything in the final.”

Steven is now working towards the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. He will be in the enviable position of being the world champion. He already has one Olympic medal, a bronze, which he won as part of the men’s 4x4 relay in Rio in 2016.

And while he acknowledges that going in as the favourite will add to the pressure, he is determined to enjoy his Olympic experience.

“This will be my second Olympics.

The first one, I was super young, so this time I want to take it all and just run it step by step until I make the final,” he said.

He also hopes to be able to glimpse some of the other races, notably those of his teammate, Shaunae Miller-Uibo, who will also be running the 400m.

“If I wasn’t a 400 metre runner I’d definitely be running the 200 metres,” he noted, “but I don’t think I’d try another sport. Even though I am tall (6’ 5”) I would not want to be a long jumper or a high jumper. I do not like to be flipped over or be upside down in the air.”

Fortunately however, given the amount of time he has to spend in the air, travelling around the world competing, he does not have a fear of flying.

“Flying doesn’t bother me at all. I can jump on a 15-hour plane ride like nothing,” he said. “One place that I would like to return for a vacation would be Monaco, it’s really nice, but wherever I go, I make sure I get a fridge magnet to add to my collection.”

And even though he loves travelling, Steven remains an island boy at heart who remains close to his family.

“When I am not at home the thing I miss most is the food, more than my family because we are constantly in communication.”

In fact, he noted that one of his prerace rituals is to talk with his family members ahead of every event.

“I like to talk to them, but we don’t talk about anything specific, just small talk and not about the race,” he said.

Steven trains four days a week and has three days off, which he said gives him more than enough time to indulge in connecting with family and friends on social media and catching up on Netflix and movies.

“I really like ‘Stranger Things’. I was hooked on it and binge-watched it all at once,” he said of the hit paranormal show. “I don’t have a favourite movie, but I am a fan of old movies like ‘Rat Race’ and any of those movies that remind me of my childhood such as ‘Dennis the Menace’. When I am not training, I use the time to watch stuff and catch up on laundry.”

When it comes to other hobbies, some might be surprised to hear that Steven is no stranger to the kitchen.

“I don’t really eat out like that, so I do cook quite a bit. I am actually a pretty good cook. I’m good at homemade spaghetti; I can season a nice chicken, and I am pretty good on the grill with some wings,” he said.

“Even though I train a lot, I still eat pretty much whatever I want, because we burn so much energy during training that it doesn’t affect me...and I love some butter pecan ice cream.”

The show must go on Saxons seeking instrument donations for displaced Junkanooers

By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net YOUNG Junaknooers displaced by Hurricane Dorian have already lost their equipment and without it their musical capabilities are stifled.

In order to compete alongside the Saxons Superstars during the end-of-year parades, the performers are in need of new musical instruments.

Therefore, the Junkanoo group is seeking donations for 40 young members who have relocated from Abaco and Freeport. If they received these instruments, the Saxons said, the Junkanooers will have enough time to learn and practice music for the Boxing Day and New Year’s Day parades.

Toby Austin, chairman of the group, said it is important to nurture the talents of these young musicians. The Saxons are now appealing to members of the general public to donate 15 sousaphones and 10 baritones – two dominant instruments that make up the group’s brass section.

“Most of the young boys are playing the sousaphone and the baritones,” Mr Austin told Tribune Weekend. “The other small instruments we can handle, but it is the bigger ones we are in need of.”

As the group prepares for the upcoming parades, Mr Austin said practice sessions have been ramped up and the instruments are needed right away.

“We don’t want them to lose the skills they already have. We don’t want to discourage them and turn them away. This is why we are trying our best to get instruments for them,” said Mr Austin of the Saxons’ youngest members.

New, old or used equipment is being solicited by their group. Mr Austin said they are willing to fix and repair any instrument regardless of their condition.

arts schools in your area, school boards or any public, charter or private school or college with a marching band or a music curriculum, we would appreciate if you could reach out to them and see if they would be willing to donate any equipment.

“At the same time we are trying to get ready for two parades and see how we can help them. This is why we are reaching out to corporate Bahamas to see if we can get some help from them. You don’t have to really give us the cash. However which way you want to do it, we will accept it. What we do now when we have brass practice is they have to share horns. Everyone has their own mouthpieces but they still have to share instruments,” he said.

“While sharing instrument has been a short-term solution that allows the performers to spend time with the instrument, it is not practical, especially on the parade. We have four guys sharing one horn. When you are on the parade everyone has to

have their own horn.”

However, if they cannot come up with the sufficient number of horns by the time the parades roll around in December, Mr Austin said they may have some group members rush only half of the route and then switch over.

The Saxons are currently in full swing when it comes to preparations for the parades in hopes to taking home the winning titles this time around.

“We are on our way. The brass section practices like four days a week. They need to learn a lot before the parade. This is October so the pressure is on now and we have to step our game up now, “ said Mr Austin.

The Saxons practice on Thursdays and Sundays at Arawak Cay from 8pm to 10pm.

Music's superstars pledge their support to four-day concert extravaganza

Caribbean artists donate their time and talent to Hurricane Dorian benefit event

usic stars from across the Caribbean will be joining their Bahamian counterparts to put on a one-of-a-kind benefit concert to support the ongoing Hurricane Dorian relief efforts.

The “Restoration For Bahamas” concert weekend will take place right here in New Providence and will feature a series of events to showcase up to 30 artists who will donate their time, talent and resources to make this an unforgettable affair.

Plans for the four-day entertainment extravaganza, which is scheduled to kick off on November 14, were set in motion by Minister Marion Hall, formerly known as the dancehall artist Lady Saw. She used social media to offer her prayers to the Bahamas during these difficult times, and referring to Nassau as her “second home”, she called on her fellow entertainers to help in any way they could “Let me tell you something, it is so heart-wrenching to see what is going on there and I feel so helpless, like I am

Dancehall star Beenie Man and Jesse Royal responded to the post with comments like “Definitely on board,” and “Ready.”

Minister Hall’s manager, Delroy Escoffery, reached out to his contacts in the Bahamas, connecting with Fresh Entertainment’s Crispen Cleare, and plans for the mega concert began to take shape.

In a press conference held in Nassau by the Fresh Entertainment team, Mr Escoffery noted his company is known for managing talent in the reggae and dancehall scenes. He said his love for the Bahamas spans over 25 years.

“When I woke up and I saw what had happened I was in tears and it was very emotional for me. Minister Marion Hall... we both knew we wanted to do something to give back. I met Crispen (a while back) when I used to book talents for him in the past. He said he was on board and he then reached out to the Zamar Group of Companies (based in Nassau) who said they are on board. What we have been doing is linking with talents across the Caribbean and thought to do a mixture of soca, Bahamian artists, dancehall, reggae and gospel. We have reached out to international media as well as hotels, Caribbean airlines, and a lot of persons are on board.

We also reached out to persons at YouTube to see if we could do a live showing of the event to host a pledge for assistance,” said Mr Escoffery.

He added that in his experience people are often extra careful when it comes to donating to benefit events, so organisers of “Restoration For Bahamas” are trying to make the whole process as transparent as possible.

“We are thinking to not charge a cover fee for the event, but encourage persons to donate, whether it is money, clothing or food items. For the pledge, everything would be publicly shown so that people can see. We want to get proper accounting so that we can know what is going on. Over the last 25 years we have benefited so much from the Bahamas and we want to help,” said Mr Escoffery He said many artists have responded to Minster Hall’s Instagram post.

Highlights of the upcoming event are expected to include a welcome party on Thursday November 14; a soca concert on Friday, November 15; a reggae and dancehall concert on Saturday, November 16, and a gospel concert and church service to take place on Sunday, November 17. So far, artists confirmed to be performing include but are not limited to Bunji Garlin, Fay-Ann Lyons, Beenie Man, Romain Virgo, Demarco, I-Octane, Kevin Downswell, and Minister Marion Hall herself. More acts will be revealed leading up to the concert event.

“For over the three days it can be up to 30 artists. We are in talks with Skinny Fabulous, Machel Montano, Aidonia, Konshens, and Sean Paul – so a lot of persons want to be on board. I gave my life to Christ for the last three years so I am also in talks and in contact with a lot of gospel artists as well. We are going to see who could come to help. We just hope and pray everything goes well,” said Mr Escoffery.

ost of the culinary herbs we use are of Mediterranean provenance and our Fall, Winter and Spring weather conditions are ideal for herb cultivation. A few rules apply to most herbs and if followed will guarantee success.

If the seeds are very small, like thyme, it usually means they require light to germinate. Scatter the seeds on the surface of your seed bed and work the seeds into the soil very lightly.

Then tamp the soil gently to ensure the seeds and the soil are in good contact. Water twice a day until seedlings appear. Medium sized seeds – parsley, chives, et cetera – need a mere ¼ inch depth. Again, tamp the surface of the soil and water daily. Large seeds should be sown ½ inch deep and also watered daily until seedlings appear.

The alternative to sowing seeds is to buy seedlings from your local nursery.

These, per plant, are more expensive than raising from seeds but sometimes you only need one or two plants and buying seeds would be cheaper but more wasteful. Bay laurel and rosemary are plants you only need one of and are obvious choices to be bought from a nursery.

Herbs demand good drainage so transplant to a raised mound in the garden or into pots that have plenty of room for growth. Most herbs are tolerant of soil types and do not need much in the way of fertilizer. Indeed, if you fertilize too well you may weaken the aroma and taste of the plants. That’s how to grow herbs; following is how to use them.

Basil is the world’s most popular herb. Last year I had seeds for nine varieties of basil but there are many more. The prime basil is Genovese (sweet or large-leaf) that is a heavy bearer of leaves and the prime ingredient in pesto. If you love pesto you must get away from only using it for spaghetti dishes and add it as a condiment to many more dishes.

My favourite after Genovese is Thai, smaller leaves that have an intense licorice flavour. A Thai basil pesto is intense. Others I grew included lemon, lime, holy, globe, Purple Ruffles, cinnamon and African Blue.

Lemon and lime basil leaves are a delightful addition to many cordials and teas. When they flower they attract bees by the score. Globe basil is very pretty in a small pot and makes a great gift. The leaves are small, however, and are a chore to pick.

Holy basil grew very well but I had no use for it. It is not a culinary herb in the western world and has a musty incense-type aroma. I had little use for Purple Ruffles, cinnamon and African Blue, though the latter was a handsome plant.

Once basil is established you must be on the watch for flower budding.

Nip off the top growth of a stem when you see buds. If flowers form, the stem they are on will turn brown.

You can allow one basil plant to go to seed if your have several, while pruning the rest for long harvests.

The more you pick basil leaves, the more grow back.

The “must have” herb in any Bahamian garden is thyme. A

good peas n’ rice demands fresh thyme leaves. By the way, only use the leaves.

I have known cooks who should have known better throw a woody stem with branches and leaves into peas ‘n’ rice makings. The stem is bitter and will ruin your dish. Thyme is a great addition to meat stews and soups.

Thyme is best bought as several plants in a small pot at your nursery. Divide the individual plants by separating the roots and working the tangled foliage free. Re-pot individually and fertilize with Osmocote.

When thyme develops woodiness in its branches you can transfer it to the ground or a larger permanent pot.

Whenever you collect thyme from a parent plant, cut the outside sprigs – not those in the crown of the plant.

Water is thyme’s worst enemy so water with a light touch.

Parsley is a great herb. It adds flavour to virtually any savoury dish yet stays, by and large, in the background.

To make a stock without parsley is unthinkable. Parsley can be Italian (or straight leaf) or curly. Chefs prefer Italian parsley for flavouring and use curly parsley for decorative purposes.

Despite its gentlemanly demeanour in stocks and soups, parsley releases its flavour in sauces. The British are fond of parsley sauce as a condiment for flatfish like plaice or lemon sole. Make a Bechamel sauce and add a handful of chopped parsley. The parsley flavour comes through strongly. A variation on parsley as a garnish is fried parsley.

Heat up oil to French fry temperature and drop in tufts of curly parsley one at a time. Do not wash the parsley because any water attached to the leaves will cause the oil to spit. Dunking in hot oil should have a sterilising effect. The moisture in the parsley leaves will cause the oil to froth a little but after a few seconds the action is over and you can remove the parsley with a slotted spoon. It will be deep green and crispy, and it will taste great.

It forms a great garnish for many meals.

Parsley seeds contain a soluble substance that deters germination.

Soak for parsley seeds for two days in several changes of water, then sow.

International tennis stars 'proud' to compete in Baha Mar Cup

he support shown by the international tennis community for next month’s inaugural Baha Mar Cup to benefit hurricane relief efforts has been overwhelming, local tennis sensation Mark Knowles told Tribune Weekend.

“I am honoured to share the beauty and warmth of my country with the world, The Bahamas is well-known to the tennis community around the world and this has been such an incredible disaster that it is a no-brainer to hold this event to raise much needed funds to help in the recovery efforts,” he explained.

“To see the destruction that has happened in Grand Bahama and Abaco is heartbreaking. But it is still better in the Bahamas and this event is a way to make it even better.”

During his career, Mr Knowles won the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open, most notably partnering with Daniel Nestor.

At various times between 2002 and 2005 he was ranked number one in the world in doubles. Since 2013, Mr Knowles has worked on-air for the Tennis Channel, providing in-match commentary,

The Baha Mar Cup will feature a Pro-Am tournament pitting professional tennis legends against devoted fans, exhibition matches with appearances from surprise celebrities, Baha Mar’s first official UTR (Universal Tennis Rating) tournament, The Baha Mar Futures Cup, and other events held throughout Baha Mar Racquet Club’s nine tennis courts, including hard, har-tru clay and grass surfaces.

Mr Knowles added that the facilities at Baha Mar are special to him .As a youngster, he learned the intricacies of the game on the courts at the Cable Beach strip when they were a part of the Nassau Beach Hotel.

Tennis is an integral part of the country and he noted that events like this tournament are a great way to expose young Bahamian players to the pros that they would ordinarily only see on TV. He still remembers the players he had the opportunity

to meet when he was young, recalling how special it was to be able to make a personal connection to them.

Mr Knowles is encouraging local players and fans of the game to take advantage of the special events being offered during the Baha Mar Cup.

The evolution of BNT’s ‘Wine and Art’

t’s that time again; the time to grab your wineloving crew and enjoy the Bahamas National Trust’s highly anticipated Wine and Art Festival.

The 29th instalment of the festival – set to take place October 26-27 at The Retreat Garden – is being touted as “a walk through the vineyard”, and will feature samples of over 50 wines, artist exhibitions, a new champagne lounge, and more.

“The BNT is of course very proud and pleased to have created an event that provides funding for national parks while supporting local artists and musicians. To have (stood) the test of time shows tremendous loyalty, not only to the event, but to the organisation from sponsors, artists and patrons,” said Urmie Braynen, events coordinator and lead of the Wine and Art Festival.

She believes the change from a one-day to a two-day event provides participating artists and vendors with greater public exposure.

“The BNT Wine and Art Festival was one of the first events to pair wine and art in The Bahamas. The event was the idea of George Kelly and Diane Holowesko. Wholesale Wines and Spirits was a new wine and spirits establishment and Mr Kelly wanted a vehicle to promote his wines, and Ms Holowesko, a BNT volunteer, was looking for a way to raise money for the BNT and its work. They both wanted to promote the new artistic talent that was emerging in the Bahamas and initially the event promoted new and young artists,” said Ms Braynen.

Over the years, she said, the event grew from featuring 20 artists to now over 50, and sponsorship has changed.

However, the idea of art and

wine in a beautiful garden setting has and continues to be popular. Wine sponsors began to emphasise wine education and food pairings, recognising that young professionals were part of the new food and wine movement and were interested in entertaining their friends with epicurean menus paired with the appropriate wines.

She said dining became a part of the social experience.

Patrons then began to request music as part of the festival and artists expanded their offerings to giclée and limited edition prints, recognising that young Bahamians might one day be ready for an original piece of art but at this stage in

life their budgets allowed only for smaller investments.

“So while you might not be able to purchase an original Trevor Tucker or Marco Mullings, one can certainly afford a print to adorn their walls. We have over 30 artists exhibiting this year; some returning artists and even a few first time exhibitors,” said Ms Braynen.

Highlights of this year’s festival will also include complimentary food samples prepared by members of the Bahamas Culinary Team; food vendors like Cheesecake Heaven, Conch N Cone, Batter Girls, Karma Sutra Kitchen and Vel Monkey Food, and others.

Guests can discover their inner artist at Art N’ Soul Bahamas and enjoy a sip and paint experience hosted and sponsored by Sherwin Williams. Aspiring artists can book one-hour painting sessions at 1pm, 3 pm and 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets for these sessions can be purchased in advance at Sherwin Williams locations and at the Bahamas National Trust. There will also be all-day live entertainment by Bahamian jazz musicians, and back by popular demand, the Heineken Beer Garden After Party from 6pm to 10pm.

By attending, Ms Braynen said patrons will not only support the Bahamas’ unique and

diverse national park system, but assist the BNT as it seeks to assess and monitor the effects of Hurricane Dorian on its parks on Abaco and Grand Bahama.

“Restoration of ecosystems damaged by the hurricane as well as replacing and repairing infrastructure such as signage, boardwalks and visitor’s pavilions are a high priority for the BNT. These parks protect unique and endemic bird life as well as providing economic opportunities for local tour operators who derive income from taking visitors to the national parks.

The Lucayan National Park on Grand Bahama is one of the most highly visited national parks in the Bahamas. Restoring the infrastructure for this park as well as other on Grand Bahama and Abaco so that local tour operators can begin to revive their businesses and earn and income is especially important to the BNT,” said Ms Braynen.

The BNT is also very excited to host a special Diamond Night Masquerade on Friday, October 25, for members in celebration of its 60th anniversary. The event will feature live entertainment and a special “Under the Sea” silent auction with unique art pieces created by participating artists.

Cara says: “I kinda wish she had gone with a different blouse, but otherwise I do like this little set. The pattern is lovely. I just feel the white top makes her look crowded around the neck area.”

Karin says: “First of all, that necklace does not go with that type of dress. The necklace signals major drama and dress is just a boring shift style design with a horribly dated pattern. I hate the whole ensemble.”

Cara says: “It’s an interesting look. Even though it’s shapeless, it still works for her. The print is lovely, even if it looks a little like fancy upholstery fabric. Her neck piece is such a statement look.”

Karin says: “Zendaya has been successfully rocking the alternative menswear look recently, but this just doesn’t work. It’s looks like she’s tied a blanket around her waist in case she gets cold at the event.”

Cara says: “This outfit is interesting. It has a lot going on. I don’t quite know how I feel about it. It’s cute even though the pants remind me of pyjama bottoms and it looks like she couldn’t decide between trousers and a skirt.”

In Mistress of Evil, Maleficent plays mom

By JAKE COYLE AP Film Writer FOR a moment, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil seems poised to turn into a wonderful take on Father of the Bride only with fangs and wings.

Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning), the beauty who escaped the curse of sleep, merrily accepts the proposal of Prince Phillip (Harris Dickinson), a marriage that could unite the fairy and human worlds.

Aurora cautiously asks if Maleficent (Angelina Jolie), her nowredeemed fairy godmother, might go with her to meet the parents: Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer) and King John (Robert Lindsay).

It’s so much fun watching Maleficent prepare for the meeting by practicing such basic cordialities as smiling and small talk that it’s hard not to wish the movie sees the fearsome sorceress through the entire battery of wedding planning. Maleficent at a bridal shower. Maleficent choosing the table settings.

Sadly, such fun is not to be had in Mistress of Evil, a needless sequel

to the 2014 Sleeping Beauty riff that fails to fully value the entire of appeal of these films: Jolie’s Maleficent.

The first movie, a box-office hit, was a mess but its star attraction was the one thing it had going for it. Jolie, an unfortunately infrequent presence on the screen these days, slid into the role so perfectly, dominating all around her with Norma Desmond command and cheekbones that could slice your throat.

The character had its roots in those 50s melodrama stars; Marc Davis, animator of the 1959 Disney film, also sculpted Cruella de Vil. And in teaming Jolie with the equally potent Pfeiffer, whose queen quickly turns into Maleficent’s bitter foe, Mistress of Evil had the potential of summoning the intoxicating stuff of Joan Crawford and Bette Davis.

But the movie, with Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) taking over for Robert Stromberg, overcomplicates itself. Instead of aiming for the elemental simplicity of a fairy tale,

Mistress of Evil fills itself with the politics and detail of the fairyhuman struggle, building inevitably to a PG-friendly war between Queen Ingrith’s army and the magical spirits of the Moors, spread out across impressively vast computer-generated palace grounds.

It’s starting to seem like every franchise film, when in search of a story, throws a battle against the wall and hopes something sticks.

Not only has this gotten tiresome, but it also sacrifices what we came here for in the first place: Jolie and Pfeiffer glowering at each other.

But all the necessary build-up to the clash (including Chiwetel Ejiofor as among an exiled group of winged creatures called the dark fey) robs us of enough screen time with Jolie’s Maleficent.

The plot in Maleficent drew largely from its inventive redemption of a classic Disney villain. But it didn’t really follow through on the possibilities of fairy tale revisionism. It simply offered up another villain (Aurora’s father King Stefan), just as Mistress of Evil does with its dastardly Queen Ingrith. A better film would have kept playing with inverted archetypes.

What saves Mistress of Evil from a worse fate, in the end, is Fanning.

Aurora, like many of Fanning’s performances, is a welcome dash of naturalism amid all the CGI action.

She’s such an innocent and wholesome young bride, though, that perhaps she’s ripe for reconsideration, too. Next time, maybe Beauty breaks bad.

A landlubber's look at Bahamian sailing craft Forgotten facts | Paul C Aranha

W

illiam R Johnson, Jr is, probably, best known for his artistic maps of many islands in the Bahamas, my favourite being the one of Crooked Island, and I admit to being prejudiced. In the top left corner of the map, near Pitt’s Town, is Bird Rock Lighthouse, built in 1876 by my great grandfather, F J Aranha.

I knew that Mr Johnson lives on Lubbers Quarters in Abaco, and was relieved that my son, who has been to Lubbers several times since Hurricane Dorian, could assure me that the 90-year-old map artist is alive and well.

Just after that, my friend, Ron Atkinson, produced his copy of Mr Johnson’s 1973 book, “Bahamian Sailing Craft”, and allowed me to scan all 49 pages, each decorated with precise, detailed drawings of boats and boating equipment; dozens of them. From it, I learned so much about our Bahamian boats and I suspect that, like myself, a lot of readers cannot distinguish between a dinghy, a schooner and a smack.

The most common type of sailboat seen in Bahamian waters is (was) the smack boat, also known as a bowsprit sloop, which ranges in size from 18 to 40 feet, sometimes more. Aft of the mast is a cargo hold, usually with a removable sliding hatch cover. Then comes a cleverly constructed fish well, where

Aft of that comes the cook box, or galley, a wooden box (yes, wooden!), filled with sand, where meals are cooked on an open fire, burning in the sand. Johnnie cake is a leading item on the menu.

Then comes the main cabin – with a sliding hatch and doors that open aft. The hull is completely decked over and enclosed by high, heavy

bulwarks. The helmsman steers by an on-deck tiller.

I had never associated the gaff rig with Bahamian boats, probably because they were concentrated in the southeast islands where wind conditions are different. Their masts are shorter than other smack boats and they carry a high-peaked gaff mainsail.

goats, sheep and pigs in a makeshift ‘corral’ of planks, nailed and lashed to the boat. It was said that the animals learned to duck whenever the helm was put down for the boat to come about.

Then there was the bare-head smack that did not have a bow-sprit. These are usually about 23 feet long on deck, with more rise to the bows.

The sponge schooners of years ago were usually built, owned and sailed by one large family, or by a single settlement, and were used to gather wool sponge from the Mud, as the sponge beds west of Andros were called. From the 1850s, sponging was the chief livelihood of the Bahamas, until 1938, when a blight killed off the sponges.

Each schooner carried a crew of 10 or 20 men and six to eight dinghies and, on reaching the beds, the schooner would furl its sails and anchor. Two men would man each dinghy, one to scull, while the other held a long pole with a special hook, all the while looking through a water-glass, hunting for sponges to hook.

Life aboard a schooner was harsh.

Work started at dawn and hooking went on until noon. At that hour, a conch shell was blown, signalling “come for lunch”. After lunch, hooking continued until sunset.

Because it’s small, the dinghy is often an underrated craft, but it could do almost anything. It is said that many years ago a US Customs official in Fort Lauderdale was surprised to see a young Bahamian man wearing only a pair of ragged pants and carrying a large sculling oar, who had sailed and sculled a 12-foot dinghy across the Gulf Stream from his home in Bimini. He had heard so much about Miami, and how close it was, that he decided to sail over to see it for himself. He did not know about compensating for the northward flow of the Gulf Stream, so he ended up in Fort Lauderdale – a superb display of seamanship, combined with luck that the sea had held fair during his crossing, but that was not impressive enough for the United States authorities. They sent him, and his dinghy, back to Bimini on the very next freight boat.

As my friend Kendal Butler told me, boats and boat-building were important to island lives. Settlements that built boats, and had seamen to sail them, were not isolated from the outside world and were of vital importance to the economic well-being of the Bahamas.

Israeli archaeologists claim to discover ancient city THE SITE of a large, 5,000-year-old city in northern Israel.

New fresco found in Pompeii ROME Associated Press HARISH, Israel Associated Press ISRAEL’S Antiquities Authority said that researchers have discovered the remains of a large, 5,000-year-old city that sheds new light on experts’ understanding of the period.

Calling it a “cosmopolitan and planned city”, the authority said the early Bronze Age settlement covered 65 hectares (160 acres) and was home to about 6,000 people.

“In this city, we have a planned settlement with a whole net of streets and alleys and squares, and drainage installations, storage installation,” said Yitzhak Paz, a director of excavation on behalf of the authority.

The city was discovered during preparations for a highway interchange project near Harish, a town some 30 miles north of Tel Aviv.

Researchers said the discovery “dramatically changes” their

understanding of the period — a time in which a rural, agrarian society was beginning to establish urban sites.

They said that residents made their living from agriculture and traded with other regions and kingdoms.

Among the discoveries was an unusual ritual temple, burnt animal bones — evidence of sacrificial offerings — and a figurine of a human head. There also were millions of pottery fragments, flint tools and stone vessels.

“The remains of residential buildings, diverse facilities and the public buildings are an indication of the organised society and the social hierarchy that existed at the time,” the researchers said.

The Antiquities Authority said that during the dig, archaeologists also found evidence of an earlier settlement dating back 7,000 years underneath the city’s houses.

It said that two nearby springs likely drew people to the area.

ARCHAEOLOGISTS excavating what may have been an ancient Roman drinking den in the ruined city of Pompeii said they have unearthed a well-preserved wall painting of gladiators in action, complete with realistically gory wounds.

The 3ft by 4.5ft fresco is located in the Regio V site, in the northern section of Pompeii’s archaeological park, in an area not currently accessible to visitors.

It was found on a wall beneath the stairwell of what was probably a tavern, or wine shop.

“Very probably the fresco decorated a place used by gladiators, perhaps a watering hole, also frequented by prostitutes,” said Massimo Osanna, director general of the archaeological park.

“Of particular interest in this fresco is the extremely realistic representation of the wounds,”

said Osanna.

The losing gladiator is holding up his finger to “implore for mercy,” he noted.

The’ fresco is the latest finding in the Pompeii park, which has yielded dozens of impressive discoveries in the last two years.

Italy’s Culture Minister, Dario Franceschini, hailed the discovery, noting that “a few years ago Pompeii was known around the world for its negative image ... Today’s story is one of redemption.”

Pompeii was a flourishing city destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Last October, the finding of a charcoal inscription suggested the eruption happened in October of that year rather than August as was previously believed.

Franceschini stressed the fresco finding “really shows that Pompeii is an inexhaustible source of research and knowledge for the archaeologists of today and for the future.”

You CAN try this at home: Cookbook serves up TV, movie foods

I

t all started with a fictional turkey burger.

Andrew Rea’s YouTube video series “Binging with Babish” was born in 2016 when he attempted to recreate the “fussy little burger” described in elaborate detail by Rob Lowe’s character Chris Traeger on a third-season episode of “Parks and Recreation.”

Hungry viewers were soon clamouring for more recipes based on foods that appear or get mentioned in movies or TV episodes, and Rea had a new career on his hands.

Now he has a new cookbook: “Binging with Babish: 100 Recipes Recreated from Your Favourite Movies and TV Shows” (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt). And while the premise might sound more silly than serious, the book — like the video series — is actually full of real meals and desserts that transcend their sometimes ridiculous fictional origins.

There are a few recipes you’ll marvel at but probably never want to make, like Buddy the Elf’s candy-laden pasta dish from the movie “Elf” or Jake the Dog’s bizarre “perfect sandwich” from the cartoon “Adventure Time,” which includes human tears as an ingredient. But even with these, Rea lays out the

steps to recreate them in actual, edible form.

Most of this beautiful hardcover book, though, is filled with dishes you’d want to dig into even if they didn’t have a (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt via AP) pop-culture connection.

Rea’s recipe for flavorful, yoghurt-marinated Palestinian chicken really is as good as Larry David says it is during a season eight episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” And Rea’s version of the mushroom soup recipe that Elaine is determined to get from the “Soup Nazi” on “Seinfeld” really is sublime, and not difficult to replicate.

Though he points out in the book’s surprisingly moving introduction that he’s not a professional chef, Rea brings a remarkable professionalism to the authenticity of his recipes. In this much longer followup to his 2017 cookbook “Eat What You Watch: A Cookbook for Movie Lovers,” Rea has included nods to just about every genre of film and TV. You’ll find Lake Trout and Pit Beef from “The Wire,” followed on the next page by Principal Skinner’s favourite coconut-based seafood stew from “The Simpsons.”

If you’ve ever wanted the secret recipe for Krabby Patties or thought about assembling your own “Friends”-inspired Moistmaker sandwich out of Thanksgiving leftovers, both recipes are here.

And Marvel fans, remember that sandwich Simmons lovingly sent along with Fitz on his first real mission during season one of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”? In describing the joyful reaction of Aziz Ansari’s character, Dev, at having made really good pasta from scratch during an episode of “Master of None,” Rea offers this encouragement: “This sentiment of excited accomplishment is an accessible, tangible sensation that we can manifest from our favourite pieces of fiction. All you’ve got to do is try.”

A master of social satire Sir Christopher Ondaatje delves into the life of the British novelist, author and illustrator known for his satirical works, particularly “Vanity Fair”, a panoramic portrait of English society.

His background was upper enough. The Thackerays were Yorkshire gentry going back generations. William was born in India where his father was a senior colonial administrator, before dying prematurely in 1816, leaving, in addition to his only legitimate child, a by-blow sibling by his Indian concubine. Thackeray was never

stable on the subject of race; nor did he ever acknowledge the existence of his half-sister.”

Thackeray’s mother remarried, Major CarmichaelSmyth, and the young William was sent to England where he was educated at schools in Southampton and Chiswick before being sent to Charterhouse – which he disliked and later parodied in his fiction as “Slaughterhouse”.

Although clever he was not a good student, postponing his matriculation at Trinity College, Cambridge where he left without a degree, having lost most of his patrimony gambling and being infected with gonorrhoea which eventually would curtail his life. His earliest writings appeared in the two university periodicals The Snob and The Gownsman.

Thackeray then travelled for a period on the Continent, trying his hand at journalism and drawing before studying

law at the Middle Temple.

However, he soon gave that up when he came into his inheritance from his father, much of which he squandered on two unsuccessful newspapers, The National Standard and The Constitutional. He then lost a sizable part of his fortune in the collapse of two Indian banks. Years of semi-idleness ended when he was 25 years old. He married Isabella Gethin Shawe – an Irish girl with no dowry. They had three children – all girls, one of whom, Harriet Marian, married Sir Leslie Stephen, the editor and biographer.

Short of funds, Thackeray now began to write for his life and to support his young family. He worked for Fraser’s Magazine. He also reviewed books for The Times, and was a regular contributor to The Morning Chronicle, The Foreign Quarterly Review and the newly created Punch magazine. Sadly Isabella, his wife, developed incurable insanity and, after 1840, they lived apart. After attempting suicide by throwing herself into the sea on a trip to Ireland, she was pulled from the waters and placed in a comfortable asylum at a cost of three guineas a week.

“By the early 1840s Thackeray had made a reputation for himself as a savage and incorrigibly ‘cynical’ satirist, with works like the hibernophic “Barry Lyndon” 1844), the autobiography of an Irish bully and braggart (thanks to Stanley Kubrick’s film, now among the author’s best-known works).

He had his first unequivocal success as a writer with “The Snobs of England” (1846-47), published in the congenial columns of the newly launched magazine ‘Punch’. At the same time he was having difficulty placing a more ambitious narrative, what he then called

‘A novel without a hero’. Eventually ‘Vanity Fair’, as it was brilliantly renamed, came out in Dickensian monthly parts, with Punch’s publisher, illustrated by the novelist himself.”

Even before “Vanity Fair” completed its serial run in Punch, Thackeray, who was 35 years old, had become a celebrity, much lauded by the very Lords and Ladies whom he satirised. He was hailed as the equal of Charles Dickens.

“Of all the celebrated nineteenthcentury British novels, ‘Vanity Fair’ is the most twenty-first century in scope and style. A gleeful satire of upper-class hypocrisy and every-class avarice in the early 1800s, during the era of the Napoleonic Wars, Thackeray’s panoramic comedy takes its title from ‘Pilgrim’s Progress’ by John Bunyan (1628-1688).

In Bunyan’s allegorical tale about living a Christian life, Vanity is the name of a town where worldly prizes and honours are sold at a fair rather than earned through good conduct. To Thackeray, the Vanity Fair is society itself, where greed, corruption, pride, and ‘dismal roguery’ rule the mad scramble for temporal glory.” – 1,000 Books to Read Before You Die, James Mustich

The incredibly entertaining novel “Vanity Fair” traces the fortunes of a good but naive Amelia Sedley, who is overshadowed in every way by her scheming and seductive friend Becky Sharp – one of literature’s great creations. She climbs the social ladder with breathtaking enterprise and achieved for her author and creator a critical reputation at the zenith of his ambitions. He remained at the top of the tree’ for the rest of his life. He produced several large novels, notably “Pendennis” (1848-50), “The Newcomes”, and “The History of Henry Esmond” (1852), despite falling victim to the cholera epidemic which swept its destructive way through London in 1849.

Now successful and wealthy, Thackeray established a home in Kensington with his two surviving daughters, but none of his subsequent novels, including “The Virginians”, and “The Adventures of Philip”, equalled the literary standard of “Vanity Fair”. He was made editor of the newly launched Cornhill Magazine in 1860 and made several remunerative tours of North America but his health worsened in the 1850s and he lost much of his creative impulse, although he continued to

the following morning.

His death at the age of 52 was totally unexpected and shocked both his family and his large reading public.

Few writers have ever been able to match Thackeray’s flair for educating his readers in the ways of the world and his attacks on his society.

“Vanity Fair” is in a class by itself, and remains a testimonial to the author’s savage creativity.

Not a petfriendly country

T

he time has come to take a long and very hard look at our government’s lack of compassion towards animal owners and their rights.

I speak today directly to the fact that in spite of the fiasco in Louisiana after Katrina, our country has apparently learned nothing.

The United States of America provided us with a great manual on what not to do with pets before, during and after a catastrophic disaster. It appears nobody in the Bahamas read that manual.

The net result is that groups like the Bahamas Humane Society, BAARK and international organisations who stepped in to help, are carrying the burden of their inattention. Could something not have been learned from Hurricane Katrina?

The Bahamas Humane Society, by way of board member Sandra Cooke, has been begging for a pet-friendly hurricane shelter in New Providence. Ms Cooke has entreated as many government ministers she could reach, to little avail. At one point she was told that we could have one if we could find one; how helpful was that!

Now let me explain why this dismissive attitude towards puts humans at risk. Many people who love their pets will be prepared to risk their lives rather than leave them to the elements. Many people died in Katrina because they would not leave their pets. I understand a few died in Dorian

for the same reason. I would not leave my five dogs to fend for themselves during a huge and dangerous storm. The only response to people not wanting to evacuate now is he threat of being arrested.

After Dorian those people fortunate enough to have survived one of the most terrible natural disasters ever, those people who may well have held on to their pets for comfort, those people who swam to shelters after their homes collapsed, with their pets on their backs, those same people where told they could not evacuate to Nassau with their pets. Fortunately, some independent rescue groups were not as heartless as our government and many did manage to

get away from the devastation with their furry family.

But what about those poor people who were forced to walk away from their pets because of the lack of compassion shown to them, the owners, who in some cases had nothing left but their pets.

A bunch of people sitting in New Providence with a roof over their heads, food in their bellies and air-conditioning to suck up made a decision which effected the people who had gone through hell.

Yes, there were groups such as the Bahamas Humane Society which had an ambulance picking up dogs who had been abandoned forcibly by tearful owners. They were flown into Nassau by BAARK, and the group named DAR (Dorian Animal Relief) manned a tent city. The Bahamas Humane Society sent as many adoption dogs to the States as possible to make room for animal refugees. A website was created looking for the owners of these poor, bewildered and traumatised animals. Was it not sufficient that they had gone through living hell, but then they were left, in many cases, to fend for themselves ?

There are still many unclaimed dogs who were never matched with owners.

Close to $750,000.00 of foreign money has been spent airlifting, caring for, looking for owners, fostering, providing medical attention and now finding new homes for these once loved animals.

Immediately after the storm some US rescue groups flew into Abaco and picked up roaming dogs. Did these dogs

After a few days things became more regularised, but who went where at the beginning? Are there owners out there who think their dog is dead when he has actually be re-homed in the States? I am told that Dorian dogs are in high demand and that people will willingly pay $800 for the privilege of adopting one.

So what have we learned from this fiasco? What will we do differently next time? As the BHS gets ready to request pet-friendly shelters on every island and pet evacuation from every island, I already know the blank stares I will receive, the platitudes and the metaphoric pats on the back.

The Bahamas Humane Society is ready and able to help, our close ally BAARK will pitch in, the international organisations will help, but before we can do anything we will need the approval, and assistance of the officials.

It is time the people running this country realised that they do so on our behalf and that pet owners want the right to have their pets with them in times of danger. This is a service to the people of this country, not to the animals.
