THE BATTLE IS THE LORD’S BY CARLOS SPENCER

A

S believers in Christ, it is important to acknowledge and remember that irrespective of what we face in life, the battle is not ours. We can look to our Almighty God to intercede on our behalf and grant us the victory. We are His children and He protects us. King Jehoshaphat demonstrated how one’s faith and God’s faithfulness can move mountains in our lives. In 1 Samuel 17:47 (KJV), the passage reads: “And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hands.” 2 Chronicles 20:15 (KJV) records “And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou King Jehoshaohat, Thus saith the Lord unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.” Our Creator spoke and all were humbled because they knew that God was with them. We should continue to rely on our faith and trust God in challenging situations. God will reveal His infinite wisdom, power and grace if we “stand still” and allow His supernatural power to go to work. He might require some action from us, as occurred in King Jehoshaphat’s time, but He takes control when we look to Him. As believers, we learn to humble ourselves before God and obey Him. Isaiah 64:8 (KJV) tells us “But now, O Lord, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of

thy hand.” We must not be feeble in our faith, but should “stand” and “continue to stand” in the midst of our battles; the battles are not ours but the Lord’s. He will not disappoint us in our difficult moments, but will take control and direct our steps. The Apostle Paul reminds us that despite our challenges, we can continue to trust in God’s grace and providence. Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 4:8 (KJV) “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed but not in despair;” Notwithstanding the magnitude of our battles, we should remain “stayed” on God and continue to trust in Him. (Isaiah 26:3) This is the test of the true believer. Just like Job, we press on in our spiritual walk with God because we know that He will give us the glory as we triumph in our battles. This choice is not optional or negoitable but a way of life with a believer. Paul also reminded us of how important it is to be saved and immersed in God’s word when we go into battle against life’s challenges and the wiles of Satan. Paul wrote in Ephesians 6:17 (KJV): “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” He further wrote in Romans 8:28 (KJV): “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” The battle is the Lord’s, not ours. As believers we should not forget this, but allow God to demonstrate His enormous and unchanging love for us. Amen. Thanks be to God for the sharing of His word.

Finding joy in 2020? It’s not such an absurd idea, really

By ANGELA GORRELL George W Truett Theological Seminary at Baylor University THE year 2020 hasn’t been one to remember – in fact, for a lot of people it has been an outright nightmare. The pandemic, along with political turmoil and social unrest, has brought anxiety, heartbreak, righteous anger and discord to many. Amid such suffering, people need some joy. As a scholar who has investigated the role of joy in day-to-day life, I believe that joy is an incredibly powerful companion during suffering. This is more than academic work for me. In late 2016, less than a year after I was hired to be on a team researching joy at Yale University, three of my family members unexpectedly died within four weeks: my cousin’s husband Dustin at 30 by suicide, my sister’s son Mason at 22 of

sudden cardiac arrest, and my dad, David, at 70 after years of opioid use. While researching joy, I was speaking at funerals. At times, even reading about joy felt so absurd that I almost vowed to be anything but joyful. In 2020, many people can relate to this. I want to be clear: Joy is not the same as happiness. Happiness tends to be the pleasurable feeling we get from having the sense that life is going well. Joy, on the other hand, has a mysterious capacity to be felt alongside sorrow and even – sometimes, most especially – in the midst of suffering. This is because joy is what we feel deep in our bones when we realize and feel connected to others – and to what is genuinely good, beautiful and meaningful – which is possible even in pain. Whereas happiness is generally the effect of evaluating our circumstances and being satisfied with our lives, joy does not depend on good circumstances. A couple of days after my cousin’s

husband died, a small group of family members and I were shopping for funeral items when the group decided to go to the place where Dustin had died by suicide. It was getting dark and the sun had almost set. As we were taking in the landscape we suddenly noticed a star above the trees. Standing next to one another in a line, we looked across the sky and one of us asked whether any other stars could be seen. There were none. We realised that there was just this one exceedingly bright shining star in the sky. Gazing at the star, we felt as if Dustin had met us there, that he’d allowed that single star to be seen in the sky so that we would know he was all right. It was not the kind of relief we wanted for him. But for a few minutes we allowed the tragedy of what had occurred in this very space just two days before to hang in the background, and we instead focused on the star. We were filled with a kind of transformative, quiet joy. And we all gave

ourselves over to this moment. As scholar Adam Potkay noted in his 2007 book The Story of Joy, “joy is an illumination,” the ability to see beyond to something more. Similarly, Nel Noddings, Stanford professor and author of the 2013 book “Caring,” describes joy as a feeling that “accompanies a realisation of our relatedness”. What Noddings meant by relatedness was the special feeling we get from caring about other people or ideas. Joy is also the feeling that can arise from sensing kinship with others, experiencing harmony between what we are doing and our values, or seeing the significance in an action, a place, a conversation or even an inanimate object. When I teach about joy, I use an example from my family to explain this. When my sister looks at a Mason jar now – whether in someone’s hand filled with tea

Finding joy in 2020? It’s not such an absurd idea, really FROM PAGE 44 or bursting with flowers on a friend’s coffee table – it reminds her of her son Mason. It is not just an object she is seeing, but a relationship imbued with beauty, goodness and meaning. It gives her a feeling that can be described only as joy. We cannot put joy on our to-do lists; it does not work that way. But there are ways we can prepare ourselves for joy. There are “gateways” to joy that help us to become more open to it. Gratitude involves bringing to mind the good that is in the world, which makes rejoicing possible. The feeling that follows contemplating nature or art that we find inspiring is often joy, as these are experiences that help people feel connected to something beyond themselves, whether to the natural world or to others’ feelings or experiences. Since “hope,” as theologian Jürgen Moltmann has said, is “the anticipation of joy,” writing out our hopes helps us to expect joy. In my book, “The Gravity of Joy”, I identify multiple kinds of joy that can be expressed even in today’s troubled times. Retrospective joy comes in vividly recalling a previous experience of unspeakable joy. For example, we can imagine in our minds an occasion when we helped someone else, or someone unexpectedly helped us, a time we felt

deeply loved … the moment we saw our child for the first time. We can close our eyes and meditate on the memory, even walk through the details with someone else or in a journal and, often, experience that joy again, sometimes even more acutely. There is a kind of joy, too, that is redemptive, restorative – resurrection joy. It is the feeling that follows things that are broken getting repaired, things that we thought were dead coming back to life. This kind of joy can be found in apologizing to someone we have hurt, or the feeling that follows recommitting ourselves to sobriety, a marriage or a dream we feel called to. Futuristic joy comes from rejoicing that we will again glimpse meaning, beauty or goodness, and seemingly against all odds feel that they are connected to our very life. This type of joy can be found, for example, through singing in a religious service, gathering at a protest demanding change or imagining a hope we have being realized. In the midst of a year in which it is not difficult to stumble onto suffering, the good news is that we can also stumble onto joy. There is no imprisoned mind, heartbreaking time or deafening silence that joy cannot break through. Joy can always find you. • Originally published on www.theconversation.com

PAGE 46 ● Thursday, October 15, 2020 MANY of us have found ourselves in a place of weariness, despondency, hopelessness, in a place where the word of God which we have built our very faith upon appears to be inactive and powerless in our lives and in the midst of our present situation. As the year 2020 rolled in, we all had great anticipations but being invaded by an unexpected, uninvited guest was not one of them. From March, our nation shifted as we were hit with such great devastation. This quest came in and changed the way we worship, the way we live, the way we work, the way we conduct business and the way we now interact with each other. Our borders are closed and our hotels are not in operation, Bay Street stores are closed, cruise ships visits have ceased, jobs have been lost; thousands are on standby with little hope of being reinstated and the fear of there being a lack of adequate food, medicine and other essential supplies is increasing daily. As I reflect on all of this with thousands of other concerned citizens of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, I am reminded of Ecclesiastes 3: 1 which says that “there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens”: you may say “Min. Pat, we have heard this scripture over and over again but we need God to move now…we need to be restored now…which is quite understandable. But I want to encourage you today by letting you know that now is the time and this is the hour when more than in previous times we must believe God and remind him of his word to forgive, his word to bless, his word to heal and his word to restore. The word of the Lord says that “there is a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance. We have seen death and destruction, we have had sorrows and great pain but in the midst of it all we have also been ploughing the grounds of our Nation where we have put down seeds of prayers for repentance, healing, restoration, unity, salvation, for our families, we have sowed seeds in prayer for our economy, for our government and for obedience just to mention a few. People who have never prayed before, people who have never even believed in prayer nor in God have found themselves in the secret place pleading with God concerning themselves and interceding to God on the behalf of others and so the spirit of pray is alive and active throughout our nation. And we are now expecting to see the hands of God move, we are expecting to see the demonstrative power of God throughout our nation….but an illusion had been sent by the enemy to make us think, feel and see otherwise. This illusion was sent to cause us to doubt God

Times and Seasons BY MINISTER PATRICIA JOHNSON-PRATT

THE TRIBUNE and to make us think that God is not moving, that he is not concerned about us and because of what we have seen with our natural eyes (an increase in deaths, increase in cases, joblessness businesses closing out etc. even some of the strong among us have become discouraged and has lost faith, hope and heart. But I believe that the end of this season where God was stretching, where God was bringing us to a place of understanding the importance of prayer, of working out our own salvation, of realising that our personal relationship with him is greater than being present in the place we assemble weekly, that allowing our will to die and for Gods will to be done, the season where separation was necessary for growth and birthing , where chastisement was necessary and where a spiritual transfusion was detrimental to our very existence is drawing closer to its end. I believe that the lesson, message, revelation and significance of all of this is finally reaching home…where now we as a nation, as the body of Christ and as individuals…are aware of our role and the part that we all play in all of this…we have all been brought to the same level, to the same playing field, and we can no longer point fingers or play the blame game but rather search ourselves, seek reformation and cry out to God for his infinite mercy. Know that we are closer today that we were yesterday and so therefore, we must continue to press, and we must continue to believe and trust in the God of times and seasons who is the beginning of all things and who also brings all things to an end. We must look up in faith that the time: which means to (plan, schedule, or arrange when something should happen or when something should be done and the season: which is a time characterised by a particular circumstance or event will come. Bahamas it will come, and when it dose, we will remember to look up to God and give him all the praise and thanks for his faithfulness. Ecclesiastes 7:8 says that “Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. And so father as we cover the nation of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas we pray for your strength to endure, for your peace that even in the midst of hard times we can still declare that it is well because you are with is. We pray Lord God that we will be patient in spirit and that we will continue to submit all things unto you because your word says you will keep that which we have committed in to your hands. We pray according to Isaiah 43:19 that “you will do a new thing and that it will spring forth suddenly in the name of Jesus, we know that your word is yes and amen and that as you have spoken it…it will surely come to pass and so we bless you Lord for your grace and mercy now and forevermore. AMEN!

The power of Gospel music

Thursday, October 15, 2020 ● PAGE 47

BY ALESHA CADET | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER | ACADET@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET FOR MANY PEOPLE, music in general can bring a sense of meditation, a change in mood, and an overall mentally therapeutic experience. When it comes to Gospel music in particular, many persons in an interview with Tribune Religion, agree that it helps in building your spirituality and walk with God. “There are a lot of ways persons may find a connection with God, one of the ways that I do is through inspirational and gospel music. God speaks to me so much through Gospel music to the point where I get so emotional that I actually shed tears. It is a beautiful feeling. I have to prepare myself when listening to Gospel music because I am a person that doesn’t like to get too deep into my feelings. But I am learning to embrace it, they are tears of joy. The fact that God loves me so much, gives me goosebumps. I have a playlist, but just to name a few, some of my favourite gospel songs are; Smile by Kirk Franklin, Spirit Lead Me by Hillsong, Nobody Greater by VaShawn Mitchell, and one of my favourites to praise and worship to - I Believe, by Jonathan Nelson,” said Kayla Deal. For Judy Johnson, waking up first thing in the morning to start her day, and turning on her stereo system to a Gospel song to wake up the house, is something she considers a good start to a blessed day. “This helps in building faith, this helps in making you feel good about your life, and so much more. Gospel artists are so encouraging, and for that reason, any gospel song can in some way, can speak to a situation you may be facing. It builds a bridge for you to walk across and connect with God, closer to him through lyrics and song. Even my six-year-old baby; I have music on so much in my house, she sings to herself at random times, the words ‘you deserve it, you deserve it’. For those that may not know, those are lyrics from JJ

The music of Kirk Franklin is an inspiration to many.

Hairston’s You Deserve. She sings it in tune too and with so much passion, my child is one of those kids. Very energetic and full of life. And this makes me feel warm inside that even from the lips of a child, she sings it as if she too has her very own connection with God through song already, and that to me is powerful,” said Ms Johnson. Christine Stubbs added that Gospel

music for her, is soul refreshing. “If even for a moment, it helps you in casting your fears and troubles away. It makes what is empty, whole. It is always the lyrics for me. Whether you are a Christian or not, Gospel songs reminds you in so many ways that God is always with you. If you feel like you are alone, listening to music that speaks of God’s love, helps a person’s mental state in

so many ways. Especially during this time that calls for being indoors for the most part of this year, it was important for me to keep the connection to God through prayer and music. I have a lot of favourites but just to name a few, I love Tasha Cobbs’s Fill Me Up, Hezekekiah Walker’s God Favoured Me, Michelle Williams Say Yes, Sinach’s Way Maker, and so much more,” said Ms Stubbs.

HE pandemic affecting the world is dictating how people live, move, work, socialise and certainly the way they

worship. The church has been moved outside of its four walls now to virtual platforms. And if there was ever a time to keep oneself in tune with God it would be now. Since many churches have been live streaming services, many Christians have tuned in to ensure they receive a healthy diet of the Word and keep their faith fed. “It is what keeps me going,” said Mildred Bowe who attended church regularly before COVID-19 but now has made the decision to remain indoors though current orders allow for church services to be held in person for one hour. Mildred said the best way for anyone struggling to keep their faith alive during times of chaos is to have a devotional life. “This should happen every morning you get up. Church is just one aspect of it that we get to do once out of the week

‘The best way for anyone struggling to keep their faith alive during times of chaos is to have a devotional life.’ and that is on Sunday. But you have to form other spiritual habits in order to keep your faith alive because if you don’t you will sink under the pressure of what is going on in our country and in the world at large,” she told Tribune Religion. Like Mildred, Stacy said she has established certain practices to ensure she puts God at the centre of her day - however,

she admits it has been a struggle in recent weeks to keep her faith going. “I have been struggling. I have lost my excitement for life to a certain degree because every time we seem to be crawling out of the hole its like we get push back down into it and honestly it’s very taxing even for a person of faith like myself. Stacy said she has not been tried as greatly as she has in all her life until this time. However, she knows in order to keep her joy she must do what is necessary. “What is necessary is staying in the Word and keeping my mind stayed on God. He is the only one who knows, foresaw what we are currently going through and has all the answer. So I encourage anyone struggle in their faith to take an opportunity to get one with God, get quiet before him and allow him bring peace to the things in your life that are unsettled,” she said. Having a devotional life does not

happen by chance, Trevor Newry said. “You have to be intentional about the things you do. This time calls for pressing and going a step further. “There are so many negative things that will be fighting for your attention as a believer but you have to press. Open your bible, find scriptures that apply to your life and confess them over your life. Pray sing praises to God, all of these things help to cultivate a devotional life that many believers are lacking. But it will mean the difference for you.” Tanya Burrows has this advice for believer struggling to keep their faith strong: “Don’t let the enemy when the battle in your mind. God is not far he near. He is right there with you in every single thing that you are experiencing. He never left your side and he will carry you safely through this time. “Listen only to comforting words and faith filled words. Trust God and do your best to keep your mind on him,” she said.
