Hield ‘being a mentor to the younger’ Bulls ‘VJ’ has another strong performance for 76ers
‘BUDDY’ HIELD By JONATHAN BURROWS Tribune Sports Reporter jburrows@ tribunemedia.net BAHAMIAN NBA players Chavano “Buddy” Hield and Valdez “VJ” Edgecombe continued their preparations for the upcoming regular season,
with Hield showcasing his perimeter shooting for the Chicago Bulls and Edgecombe producing another strong scoring performance for the Philadelphia 76ers. Hield connected on four three-pointers and finished with 15 points in Chicago’s 133-128 preseason loss to the Denver Nuggets on Sunday night at Ball Arena. The veteran guard shot 4 of 7 from the field, including 4 of 6 from beyond the arc, and made all three of his free throws in 19 minutes of play. He also had three rebounds, one assist and two steals. Hield helped the Bulls build a 68-59 halftime lead, but Denver responded with 40 points in the third quarter to take control and secure the victory. Leonard
Miller led Chicago with 26 points, while Nikola Jokic recorded a triple-double of 22 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for Denver. Hield’s shooting is expected to be an important part of Chicago’s offence, but the 10-year NBA veteran also intends to help develop the team’s younger players. “Being a mentor to the younger guys, that’s my job,” Hield said during training camp. “Help Caleb, Matas and Josh get to where they need to get and help them to the fullest so they can get to the next level.” Hield also demonstrated his shooting touch during practice, making 23 of 25 attempts in a three-point
drill. “I love that drill,” he said. “It keeps you mentally focused after practice. Lock in. It’s a fun drill, man. Shooter’s mentality always.” Meanwhile, Edgecombe continued to build on an encouraging start to his second NBA season with the 76ers, scoring a teamhigh 19 points in Saturday’s 144-106 preseason loss to the Boston Celtics. The 21-year-old guard shot 6 of 11 from the field and 2 of 5 from three-point range, while making five of six free throws in 26 minutes. He also recorded four steals, four assists and three rebounds. Edgecombe’s performance followed an 11-point outing against the Brooklyn
Nets and a 12-point, seven-assist display in Philadelphia’s preseason opener against the New York Knicks. The Bahamian guard has also been working to improve his shooting, finishing ability and ball-handling during the offseason as he prepares for a larger role in Philadelphia’s second unit. His development comes as the 76ers welcome major additions to their roster, including LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, alongside returning stars Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. Edgecombe is expected to contribute through his defensive pressure, transition scoring and ability to play alongside the team’s established guards.
‘VJ’ EDGECOMBE With the preseason nearing its conclusion, both Bahamians have provided encouraging signs. Hield has shown the outside shooting Chicago sought when it acquired him, while Edgecombe continues to demonstrate the versatility that made him one of the NBA’s most promising young guards.

Bahamas golfers snap ‘Jazz’ Chisholm Jr Jamaica’s stranglehold could become a free in the Caribbean agent this offseason By BRENT STUBBS Chief Sports Editor bstubbs@ tribunemedia.net
THE Bahamas Golf Federation's 14-member team finally snapped Jamaica's stranglehold of the Caribbean Golf Association's Four Ball Championship by turning in a dominating performance to win this year's title over the weekend. The Bahamas accumulated a total score of 88 to secure their first team victory as they added the coveted Ambrose Gouthro Cup to their collection in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Jamaica had to settle for runners-up with 71 (-17) followed by Trinidad & Tobago in third with 65 (-23), host Turks & Caicos fourth with 49 (-39), the Cayman Islands fifth with 42 (-46), Puerto Rico 23 sixth with 23 (-65); Barbados seventh with 18 (-70) and St Lucia ninth with 4 (-84). "I knew going into this championship event that Team Bahamas stood its best chance ever to win it all," said team manager Anthony Hinsey, who also serves as the vice president of the BGF. "This year was the first time the Bahamas Golf
Federation held a qualifier tournament, which was a two-day event and the winners in four of the five divisions scored under par." Hinsey noted that the team's six weeks of preparation were intense and there was a sense of focus and determination. "We had a national golf team not willing to settle for runner up or a second place finish," he stressed. "The team arrived in Turks and Caicos on Tuesday and it was all business. By RONALD BLUM AP Baseball Writer NEW YORK (AP) — George Steinbrenner would be firing people. The New York Yankees failed for the 17th straight season to win a World Series title and watched an opponent celebrate on their infield in October for the third consecutive year. Steinbrenner, their tempestuous controlling owner from 1973-2008, raged at far less frequent failure. “There’s a standard to winning a championship. It’s black and white. There’s no gray area," Yankees
captain Aaron Judge said Wednesday night after Tampa Bay completed a three-game AL Division Series sweep of New York. "It’s every day you show up to work, every little thing you do is, are you working towards a championship or you're not?” New York ranked fourth in the majors in runs, 13th in batting average and second in OPS through May 31, its last game before Judge went on the injured list due to a fractured rib. From June 1 through the end of the season, the Yankees were 24th in runs, 29th in batting average and 27th
in OPS. Judge returned for seven games from September 8-16, hitting .174 with three RBIs before a calf strain ended his season. After batting .382 with 18 runs in a two-game Wild Card Series sweep of Boston, the Yankees hit .130 and were outscored 10-5 by Tampa Bay with a batting order defanged without the three-time AL MVP. “Look, it’s Aaron Judge, the greatest player in the world,” manager Aaron Boone said. “And that’s a huge, huge person to be missing.” MLB - SEE PAGE 2

THE Bahamas Golf Federation’s 14-member team at the Caribbean Golf Association’s Four Ball Championship in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Team Bahamas wins Caribbean Golf Association Four Ball Championship title GOLF - FROM PAGE ONE full practice and by late evening on Wednesday the Royal Turks and Caicos Golf Course felt like familiar territory.” Hinsey noted that Thursday was the official start of the championship and, at the end of round one, Team Bahamas was in first place and that lead was not relinquished. Richard Gibson and Nolan Johnson combined to win the Mid Amateur male division 35+ and they were joined by Raymond Gibson and James Wallace, who captured the legends male division 70+. Horace Miller and Leroy
Williamson came second in the super senior male division 60+ and Kelsey Rolle and Michael McAleer were fourth in the Senior male division 50+ (4th place finish) On the ladies’ side, the duo of Inecia Rolle and Taneka Sandiford, competing in the 25+ female division, was second overall and Kyshna Radnetter and Giselle Pyfrom, competing in the 45+ ladies division, was fourth. According to Johnson, winning this year’s title was extra special because they knew they had the potential to dethrone archrivals Jamaica who have completely dominated the event
since the tournament’s inception. “The Bahamas came incredibly close to winning it previously, including a second-place finish when they hosted the event at Baha Mar, but the 2026 win officially broke Jamaica’s six-year championship streak,” Johnson said. “While this was the first time the country won the overall team title, Bahamian duos have won individual age group divisions at past tournaments, such as winning the Ramon Baez Romano Trophy (Mid Amateur division) Higgs & Higgs Trophy (Super Seniors division).” Johnson called it an “historic feat” with a

“masterpiece” completely “redefining” The Bahamas’ standing in regional golf. He added that it was without a doubt, the “greatest collective team achievement” for Bahamian golf on the Caribbean stage. He attributed the team’s performance to the following: • Depth chart: “The Bahamas assembled a team of players with years of tournament experience, from the younger Mid-Am players to the seasoned legends,” he said. “This group included former male and female college golfers, current regional and international golfers and those whose
names are still talked about throughout the region.” • Consistency Across Divisions: “To win the overall cup, a country needs strong performances across multiple age categories,” he said. “The Bahamas dominated by winning two major divisions (Mid-Amateurs and Legends) and securing runner-up spots in two others (Super-Seniors and Ladies 25+).” The tournament wrapped up on Saturday with Team Bahamas coming out on top of the standings each day to stamp their approval on the team title. Lynford Miller, president of the BGF, said before
the team left, the golfers made the commitment that they were going to win it and they did. “Some teams believed that they didn’t participate their best this time but it was good enough to capture the overall win,” Miller said. “The Mid Amateur male division, Senior, Super Senior and Legends are very competitive divisions and the players played well.” As the team manager, Hinsey said he felt honoured in saying “congratulations” to the young and not so young members of the 2026 Caribbean Four Ball Golf Championship winners from Team Bahamas.

Yankees end 17th straight season without a title MLB - FROM PAGE ONE 10 players could go free Yankees closer David Bednar, second baseman Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm Jr, centre fielder Trent Grisham and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt could become free agents this offseason along with infielder Amed Rosario, left-handers Tim Hill and Ryan Yarbrough, and right-handers Paul Blackburn, John Schreiber and Michael Fulmer. “This is where I want to be,” Chisholm Jr said. “I love it as a Yankee. I grew up as a Yankee fan, getting from The Bahamas, watching Derek Jeter and those guys every day. It was a great time being a Yankee. I loved my time (with the) Yankees.”
Chisholm Jr learned he was benched for Game 3 against the Rays in favour of Anthony Volpe when he saw the lineup card. “I always prefer a conversation,” Chisholm Jr said. Leadership appears stable Brian Cashman completed his 29th season as general manager, finishing a four-year contract. When Cashman took over in February 1998, it was the 15th change at GM since Steinbrenner bought the Yankees in January 1973. Boone finished his ninth season as manager and has one season left on a two-year contract extension agreed to in February 2025. He has led New York to a 790-565 regular-season record and three first-place finishes in the AL East but a 27-30 postseason mark. “Yeah, of course,” he said when asked whether he wanted to return for 2027. “That’s for another day.” Judge would flash the cash New York opened the season with MLB’s third-highest payroll at $303 million and the Yankees drew just under 3.3 million fans for 80 dates, fourth
in the majors behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego and Toronto. Judge hopes Hal Steinbrenner, his father’s successor, directs Cashman to be active in pursuit of a top roster. “We’re the Yankees. I feel like they should go all in and do what they need to do and find — if we’ve got holes, if it’s finding certain players or personnel, whatever we need, you’ve got to go out there and get it,” Judge said. “That’s why I signed back here to play with the Yankees — is to fight for a championship every single year and to go all-in. That’s what I do every offseason, is get ready to give this team and this city everything I’ve got, so I expect them to do the same.” Schlittler a bright spot A 25-year-old righthander, Cam Schlittler is likely to win the AL Cy Young Award after going 14-6 with an AL-best 1.95 ERA and 239 strikeouts in 193 2/3 innings. “We didn’t meet the expectations of the fans and this organisation,” he said. “There’s a certain standard of being a Yankee and we didn’t fulfill that.”

Reese, Howard help Dream sweep Jonquel and Liberty By DOUG FEINBERG AP Basketball Writer
Advance to WNBA Finals for first time since 2013
NEW YORK (AP) — Angel Reese was sitting at home watching the end of the WNBA Finals last season when she tweeted “ manifesting the finals.” Exactly 364 days later, Reese is there after helping Atlanta reach the WNBA Finals for the first time since 2013 with a 22-point effort in the Dream's 85-83 win over the New York Liberty on Friday night. “Sat at home the last two years and watched it,” Reese said of the championship round. “I texted Kah (Kahleah Copper), just get me one game in the playoffs.” Now Reese is playing on the WNBA's biggest stage. The fourth-seeded Dream completed the three-game sweep of the Liberty and haven't lost in the postseason this year. They will face Golden State, which swept defending champion Las
Vegas, in the WNBA Finals beginning Saturday, October 17. Reese, who was the league’s Defensive Player of the Year, came to Atlanta this offseason in a trade and proved to be a key reason the Dream advanced to the championship round. The Dream hadn't reached the semifinals since 2018 before this season. Now, they'll try to win the franchise's first championship with four more victories. “The job isn’t done,” Reese said. “Happy where we are right now. We’re not satisfied.” Atlanta led 83-81 with 17.7 seconds left after turning the ball over, giving New York one last chance. But, Breanna Stewart missed a contested layup with nine seconds left. DeWanna Bonner hit two free throws with 6.2 seconds left to seal the win.
“I missed a bunny to tie the game which really stinks,” Stewart said. “Atlanta is a tough team. You know tons of credit to them for making it tough for us every single night and wish them the best in the Finals.” Atlanta won it without leading scorer Allisha Gray, who has been sidelined with a finger injury sustained in Game 1. She missed Game 2 and warmed up before Friday night’s game, but was ruled out about an hour before the tip. She was on the bench cheering for her teammates in a Howard jersey. Howard got the Dream going early with 11 points in the first quarter. Reese had 10 in that period, including hitting two 3-pointers. Things got chippy in the second quarter. After Isobel Borlase scored twice in a row, Sabrina Ionescu went
to set a screen on her and was called for the offensive foul. She and Reese then started jawing with each other before being broken up by officials. A few minutes later, Jones blocked Reese’s shot and the two bumped chests while talking trash. The referees stepped in and gave both a technical foul. New York was able to get within 40-39 late in the half before Reese scored the final four points of the second quarter to give Atlanta a 44-39 lead. The Dream scored the first seven points of the third quarter to take a 51-39 lead. New York responded with a 16-4 run, including scoring the first 10 points in the outburst to take its first lead since 2-0 on a tip-in by Jones. The Liberty led 68-66 after the third quarter. Cam Little hits 57-yard FG late as Jaguars edge Eagles 19-17
CLUTCH MOMENT: Jacksonville Jaguars place kicker Cam Little (39) celebrates after scoring the winning field goal during an NFL football game against Philadelphia Eagles in London, Sunday, October 11, 2026. (AP Photo/Ian Walton) By The Associated Press LONDON (AP) — Cam Little kicked a 57-yard field goal as time expired and the Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Philadelphia Eagles 19-17 after Ameer Abdullah’s 53-yard kickoff return left 1 second left in a wild finish at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday. The Eagles had taken a 17-16 lead on Jake Elliott’s 48-yard field goal with 8 seconds left — after Little’s extra-point attempt was wide left following Parker Washington’s 27-yard touchdown reception late in the fourth quarter. Philadelphia, which slipped to 2-3 for the first time since 2021, played without leading rusher Saquon Barkley and receiver DeVonta Smith and with a makeshift offensive line. Trevor Lawrence completed 24 of 39 passes for 331 yards and two touchdowns — both to Washington — along with an interception for the Jaguars (4-1). RAVENS 30, FALCONS 23 (Overtime) ATLANTA (AP) — Tyler Huntley led Baltimore to a game-tying touchdown and 2-point conversion in the last minute of regulation and then scored on a 1-yard sneak in overtime as Baltimore rallied to beat Atlanta. Derrick Henry ran for 102 yards against the Falcons’ top-ranked run defence for the Ravens (4-1). After Michael Penix Jr left the game with a rib injury late in the fourth quarter, Tua Tagovailoa took over at quarterback for the Falcons (2-3) in overtime. Tagovailoa’s pass for Drake London was intercepted by Kyle Hamilton to end the game. Huntley completed 24 of 32 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns as the fill-in starter for Lamar Jackson, who has an ankle injury. Penix overcame a slow start to pass for 240 yards and a touchdown but could only watch from the bench
with a towel on his head as the Ravens put the game away. Jessie Bates III returned a recovered fumble 36 yards for a score for Atlanta in the first quarter. Bijan Robinson ran for 86 yards, but Penix’s 5-yard scoring pass to Kyle Pitts was Atlanta’s only offensive touchdown. TEXANS 26, TITANS 3 NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — C.J. Stroud threw for 261 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score and Houston snapped its winless start to the season by routing Tennessee. This is the second straight season Houston (1-4) ended an opening winless skid by beating Tennessee. This time, the Texans forced two turnovers and Will Anderson Jr. had three of Houston’s four sacks. Ka’imi Fairbairn kicked four field goals with the Texans taking a 12-3 halftime lead. Houston played keepaway over the second and third quarters outgaining the Titans 225-49 and outscoring them 16-0. The Texans held Tennessee to a season-low 187 total yards. PACKERS 31, BEARS 7 GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Christian Watson caught two long touchdown passes from Jordan Love, MarShawn Lloyd also scored twice and Green Bay exacted a measure of revenge against Chicago by trouncing them. Love went 25 of 31 for 367 yards, the highest total by a Packers quarterback against the Bears at Lambeau Field. He connected with Watson on a 42-yard touchdown in the first quarter and a 53-yarder in the third. Green Bay had lost three of four to the Bears and blew a 21-3 halftime lead in a 31-27 NFC wild-card playoff loss at Chicago last season. Caleb Williams celebrated that come-frombehind victory by grating cheese on the field, poking fun at Green Bay’s Cheesehead fan base.
Williams missed a third straight game Sunday with a hamstring injury, and Tyson Bagent started in his place. Xavier McKinney intercepted two passes from Bagent as the Packers forced five turnovers. VIKINGS 23, SAINTS 13 NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Justin Jefferson highlighted his return to Minnesota’s lineup with a leaping touchdown catch, Aaron Jones made up for an early fumble with a pivotal, fourth-quarter touchdown and the Vikings remained unbeaten with a victory over slumping New Orleans. Will Reichard made all three of his field-goal attempts from 40 or more yards for the Vikings (5-0), including a 55-yarder to put Minnesota up 10 in the fourth quarter and all but doom the Saints (1-4) to a third straight loss — all in the Superdome. Jones finished with 113 yards rushing on 25 carries. Jefferson, who sat out Week 4 with an ankle injury, caught six passes for 79 yards from Kyler Murray, who threw for 229 yards and a TD without a turnover and rushed for 51 yards. The Vikings, who came in allowing an NFL-low 12.8 points per game, gave up only one offensive touchdown and held New Orleans to 142 yards. BENGALS 31, DOLPHINS 24 MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Joe Burrow threw four touchdown passes, safety Jordan Battle had a pair of interceptions and Cincinnati beat Miami. Ja’Marr Chase had been questionable after suffering a concussion last week against Jacksonville, caught six passes for 77 yards, including a highlight-reel, one-handed 45-yard touchdown catch that made it 28-10. Burrow completed 23 of 32 passes for 190 yards and also threw touchdowns to tight ends Mike Gesicki and Tanner Hudson and running back Samaje Perine. The Bengals quarterback took advantage of the Dolphins’ young secondary, completing passes to nine different receivers. Battle picked off Malik Willis on back-to-back drives in the second quarter. The veteran had a big game after saying this week he had a tell on how Willis throws the football — pointing out the Dolphins quarterback apparently taps the ball before he throws. PATRIOTS 45, RAIDERS 17 FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Drake Maye threw for four touchdown passes and ran for another score, and New England rolled past Las Vegas. Maye was 26 of 34 for 374 yards passing in the second 300-yard game of his career. Two TDs went to Pop Douglas and one each to Hunter Henry and Kyle Williams. Rhamondre Stevenson added a scoring run.
Maye is the first with back-to-back games of at least three TDs passing for New England since Tom Brady in 2018. It was also Maye’s first game this season without a turnover. He scored on a 3-yard run. The Patriots (3-2) finished with a season-high 536 yards and forced a fumble despite playing without injured receiver Mack Hollins and cornerbacks Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis III. STEELERS 34, COLTS 22 PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jaylen Warren piled up 188 total yards and two long touchdowns — one rushing and one receiving — to lead Pittsburgh past Indianapolis. The Steelers (3-2) shook off a loss at Cleveland by relying on Warren and a defense that frequently bent but rarely broke. Warren caught six passes for 87 yards, including an 80-yard catch-and-run score in the first quarter, and added 101 more on the ground, highlighted by a 50-yard sprint to the end zone in the third quarter in which the typically low-key former undrafted free agent hurdled across the goal line in celebration. Aaron Rodgers completed 22 of 31 passes for 235 yards and three scores. While Warren did most of the work on their 80-yard connection that gave Pittsburgh’s offense an early jolt, the 42-year-old Rodgers paid the price by absorbing a crushing hit from 314-pound Colts defensive tackle Grover Stewart as he flicked the ball to the do-everything running back. JETS 17, BROWNS 12 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Braelon Allen ran 22 yards for the go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter after New York recovered a fumbled punt snap and the Jets ended a three-game skid with a victory over Cleveland. Rookie David Bailey had three of New York’s eight sacks of Deshaun Watson, and Geno Smith had a touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson on the Jets’ first drive, helping snap the Browns’ three-game winning streak. The Browns had a final chance when they got the ball with 1:41 left and no timeouts. But New York’s defense, as it did all game, stiffened and sealed it when Will McDonald had a stripsack of Watson on fourth down and recovered the fumble. Smith finished 17 of 30 for 182 yards and the TD to Wilson, who had seven catches for 104 yards, and Allen ran for 116 yards and the winning touchdown on 24 carries. COMMANDERS 27, GIANTS 27 (Overtime) LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Jayden Daniels took off on an ill-advised scramble in the closing seconds of overtime with
the Commanders in field goal range and Washington was unable to stop the clock before time expired, settling for a tie with New York after both teams made critical mistakes in the extra period. Washington (1-3-1) got the ball with 2 minutes left in OT when Daron Payne stripped the ball from Cam Skattebo with the Giants in range for a game-ending field goal. Daniels quickly moved the Commanders to the Giants 24, but with 12 seconds left and Washington with no timeouts, he held onto the ball and went down for no gain. Washington lined up in a bid to spike the ball but the clock ticked down to zero and coach Dan Quinn ripped off his headset in disgust. The Commanders had a two-touchdown lead in the fourth quarter before Jameis Winston led a furious comeback for the NFC East-leading Giants (3-1-1). He connected with Isaiah Likely for a 17-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter — Likely’s second TD catch of the game — and then found Malik Nabers for the tying score, also from 17 yards, with 1:43 left. Winston finished with 326 yards passing and three TDs. Daniels threw for 199 yards and rushed for 103 yards and two TDs while wearing a brace on his left elbow in his first game back since he dislocated the elbow for the second time. 49ERS 32, SEAHAWKS 29 SEATTLE (AP) — Brock Purdy engineered two scoring drives in the fourth quarter and San Francisco rallied to beat Seattle on a 43-yard field goal by Eddy Pineiro with 1:56 to play. The win for the 49ers (5-0) offered a small bit of payback for their two late-season losses to Seattle (3-2) last season, including a 41-6 defeat in the divisional round of the playoffs with a short-handed roster. The game featured an NFL season-high seven combined turnovers, an ejection of 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw and no touchdown drives of more than 25 yards before San Francisco took over trailing 26-21 late in the third quarter. Purdy responded with an impressive drive against the vaunted Seahawks’ defense, including a 28-yard pass to Mike Evans after an intentional grounding penalty left the Niners in a precarious second-and-21 situation. That helped set up Purdy’s 7-yard touchdown pass to newcomer Brandin Cooks as San Francisco took a 29-26 lead following a 2-point conversion to Evans. Sam Darnold responded by leading Seattle on a game-tying field goal drive before Purdy and the 49ers moved the ball 43 yards for Pineiro’s go-ahead kick. The Seahawks had
one last chance, but Jaxon Smith-Njigba dropped a third-down pass from the 50 at the San Francisco 25, and Cooper Kupp was stopped 1 yard short of the first down by Malik Mustapaha on fourth down. LIONS 45, CARDINALS 21 GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Jared Goff threw three touchdown passes, Jahmyr Gibbs added 151 yards rushing and two more scores and Detroit shook off a slow start by scoring 31 straight points to roll past Arizona. Gibbs barreled into the end zone on a 1-yard run in the second quarter and added a 3-yard TD run in the fourth, bouncing off the offensive line before reversing field and finding room to run. The three-time Pro Bowl selection has scored an NFL-record 58 touchdowns before his 25th birthday, passing Lions great Barry Sanders, who had 57. Jameson Williams had his first multi-TD receiving game, catching touchdowns for 8 and 39 yards for Detroit (3-2). Arizona (1-4) has lost nine straight home games, a streak that’s lasted more than a year. It was a disappointing, weird afternoon for the Cardinals, who finalized a trade to send receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. to the Houston Texans in the middle of the first quarter. Harrison was one of the team’s five inactives against the Lions and wasn’t seen at the stadium. BRONCOS 23, CHARGERS 17 INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Wil Lutz kicked a go-ahead 19-yard field goal with 5:07 remaining, lifting Denver over the winless and mistake-prone Los Angeles. Lutz’s 36-yarder with 1:08 left extended the lead and finished a run of 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter for the Broncos (3-2). Denver earned its first division win and first victory at SoFi Stadium since 2023 with coach Sean Payton calling the plays. He took those duties away from offensive coordinator Davis Webb earlier in the week. The Broncos won without injured cornerbacks Pat Surtain II (ankle) and Riley Moss (ribs). The Chargers also started 0-5 in 2023, the year before coach Jim Harbaugh took over. They came in with a decimated offensive line that featured four rookies trying to protect quarterback Justin Herbert, who was 14 of 24 for 121 yards passing with a touchdown and an interception while getting sacked five times. Courtland Sutton caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Bo Nix, tying the score at 17 midway through the fourth. The Broncos got the ball back after Herbert came up short on fourth-and-1, and the Chargers sputtered the rest of the way.
