Young artists get ambitious for Absolut

HIS year’s Absolut Art Ambition competition saw a little spin on its usual concept this past weekend as the local lifestyle brand known as YNGDGRT$ (YNG) took the helm.

Held at the Smugglers restaurant in Downtown Nassau, the event showcased the works of 10 young artists competing for their chance to win 1,000 in cash.

The artists were each given two hours to complete a live painting inspired by the Absolut Vodka brand. Ultimately, tattoo artist Durelle Williams was named this year’s overall winner.

“The Absolut brand usually hosts the event annually, but this is the first year YNG is involved and this is also why the event was very special,” said Vado Marlin of YNG. “We are the spirit that the event needs. When the brand manager approached us about being involved he took notice because he himself got wrapped up in the lifestyle aspect of the YNG brand.

He mentioned that he attended a few of our events and follows us on social media and thought that we would make great partners for the event.”

Since launching in 2012 with their contemporary streetwear, YNGDGRT$ has grown tremendously and has expanded its reach into art, music, film and event hosting.

The brand has also partnered with Bahamian-owned companies

such as Relish Socks, Dungeon Forward and Bahari.

“Absolut Art Ambition was important because we would like to be part of history. We would like to help shift the gears in art in the same manner that the YNG brand has revolutionised urban fashion in the Bahamas. Back in the day guys were dressing in oversized clothes, the colours were bland, and they usually matched in the same colours from head to toe.

We provided an escape for our niche market who wanted a different style, those who did not mind wearing their clothing fitted, those who enjoyed mixing colours, those who wanted to express themselves with the countless graphic tees we entered the market with,” said Mr Marlin.

Absolut Art, he added, gave the emerging artists the recognition they deserve in the larger art community.

“Many artists cannot pursue art solely and have to take up additional means of income which can starve them of time and creativity.

Many of the artists who we have spoken with look at art as merely a hobby and not a career locally.

We would like to bring awareness to these participants in addition to the art itself. This will connect art to those who may not have come into contact with it under normal circumstances,” said Mr Marlin.

His hope is to further promote and elevate various art forms.

“We see the Absolut Art event having the capacity to reach the height of the Art Basel event which is hosted in Miami, Florida.

It draws millions of art enthusiasts and viewers to the city annually to auction and view art,” said Mr Marlin.

interview Marcus Laing believes architecture is a vital ingredient in the recipe for a more beautiful Bahamas. Beautiful buildings create inviting spaces for people to live, work and play. He tells Felicity Ingraham that these spaces could be key to helping the population reach its full potential.

oo often, homes and corporate buildings are constructed throughout the Bahamas without much consideration being made for architectural detail. It’s a trend that architect and publisher Marcus Laing would like to see replaced with eyecatching and eco-friendly buildings that suit the character of our country.

“The biggest impact to our architecture has been the economic status of the Bahamas and the region,” he told Tribune Weekend.

“We don’t have access to capital the way a lot of other major developed countries do, in part because of our population size. Critical mass hasn’t been reached where there is enough wealth floating around so that persons can even afford to hire a personal architect to do a really, really innovative job on a building, home or development.”

When property owners do have access to funds, they tend to do what is “easy, inexpensive, and just bastardise a typical building to achieve what they need”, and hence, our architecture suffers, he added In building a modern Bahamas, Marcus believes it is time that more attention be paid to his field. People should understand the value of having a trained designer create a formula that results in beautiful architecture.

“You can always tell,” he said.

“When the building feels good, when it functions, when it stands the test of time – those are the buildings that are designed by professionals, and those are the ones that get real value. All of the businesses that are well done, well grounded and that people enjoy, they tend to be the ones that had an architect involved.”

Bahamians need to get innovative and creative with how they build, he said, because when a building is constructed without care for the design in mind, the occupants suffer.

Exposure and education will be key to helping the public understand and appreciate the roles of architects and engineers on a deeper level, he believes. Contractors can then focus on the jobs they should be doing, and in turn, are more likely to be excited about the trade and the products of their labour.

Marcus is dedicated to increasing the level of exposure and education regarding architecture in the Bahamas and throughout the region. That is why he created the Insitu Arch magazine in 2008.

This month, the magazine will launch its 12th edition, featuring some of the best of Bahamian and Caribbean architecture and design.

Insitu Arch launched with an event at Island House, which is also featured in the magazine. Island House, located close to Lyford Cay, stands out among Nassau’s resorts. It was designed with both visitors and the local community in mind, and as a symbolic extension of the surrounding environment. The property features six rental apartments, two restaurants, a café, an art house cinema, a lap pool, movement studio, squash courts, panel court and a Bamford Spa. “A lot of Bahamians still haven’t been at Island House, which has a very unique design aesthetic,” said Marcus.

“Nothing like what’s here...it has a Caribbean, contemporary feel with Asian touches.

“It features sustainable design – sun sharing, day lighting, ventilation, and the company itself has been very involved in operating their business in a very sustainable way. Insitu Arch also features the Inline Project construction firm’s building.

Designed by Marcus and the company TDG Architects, the building is “very unique” with contemporary styling, he explained. It heralds the kind of trends in architecture and construction that Marcus desires to see beautify spaces all over the Bahamas. Especially for a construction company it is very unique, he said.

Marcus said he is hoping to see corporate buildings in the country with “simple, clean lines, a minimalist approach to interior design, with a lot more light and views in and out of the buildings.”

A big theme for this issue of Insitu Arch is the environment, especially in light of increasingly strong hurricanes and rising sea levels in our region, said Marcus.

Artist Al “Pachino” Wallace is also spotlighted. This cutting edge artist participated in the magazine’s launch event with a live art show which highlighted the night. President of the Bahamas Contractors Association Leonard Sands gave an address, congratulating the team on the publication and encouraging professionals in the industry to take ownership of their country.

Marcus is calling on government leaders to take a closer look at architecture and engineering, to learn from mistakes of the past which “ultimately cost” the country.

“We are suffering right now because of bad decisions made by government decades ago,” he said.

“For example, our electrical grid was designed a certain way, but not appropriate for where we are. We should have no lamp poles in a place where you have hurricanes. One pole down, everyone suffers. This is not the way that you design a country for the future.

Since then no one has figured out, let’s not put any new lamp poles up, let’s start to design infrastructure underground, and over time, phase out the old infrastructure.”

Marcus is a design and equity partner with TDG Architects Ltd and the founder and CEO of Insitu Arch Caribbean Architecture Magazine. He is a member of the Institute of Bahamian Architects, the American Institute of Architects, the National Organisation of Minority Architects, US Green Building Council, and past vice president of the New Providence alumni chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated.

A graduate of the College of the Bahamas and Louisiana Tech University, he holds two degrees in architecture and served as a policeman for several years before completing his training in architecture. Working with The Beck Group, one of the largest and oldest construction and design companies in the United States, he assisted in developing the East Coast presence in design and construction. His projects include the His Hands mega church in Woodstock, Georgia, and the Mike W Krzyzewski Centre on the campus of Duke University, the basketball team’s 51,000 square-foot practice facility. Locally, he has been involved with projects such as the Princess Margaret Critical Care Block and Entry addition, the rebranding of the Bamboo Shack Nassau Street location and the Vincent D’Aguilar Gallery renovation.

An advocate for the proper and coordinated development of the Bahamas, Marcus is an enthusiast of all other art forms in the local arena.

Festival season kicks off with food, wine and culture

HE Botanical Gardens will come alive this weekend with the highly anticipated 2017 edition of the International Culture, Wine and Food Festival (ICWFF).

The exciting two-day event has seen attendance numbers of up to 30,000 in recent years, and organisers are hoping this year’s instalment will be just as successful. For two days, the event will celebrate 22 years of nations around the world coming together – all in the name of food.

“It is a very good feeling that so many people patronise the festival because it makes you realise you must be doing something right. We are a nonprofit organisation and we do the best we can, when we can.

During the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew we made a contribution of $25,000. We do good work and we give back to the Gardens as well, the home of the festival,” said Janet Johnson, ICWFF chairman.

For the event’s duration, Ms Johnson is looking forward to good weather, laughs, and a great time with families celebrating in large numbers.

“When the sun is shining and everything is going well, people fully enjoy themselves.

I especially like to see when the grounds swell with people coming in after church on Sunday, and that is a wonderful feeling,” she said.

More national booths will include food and drink options from Guyana, Haiti, Trinidad, newcomer Bermuda, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Belgium, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Asia, India, China, and Belize making a first appearance.

Last year’s new edition of the beer garden will be back again to offer patrons a place where they can sit and enjoy a cold beer with friends. For the amusement of kids in attendance there will be attractions such as inflatable rides, face painting, and more.

“Something that we introduced last year was a free concert and we are going to do that again this year, so across two stages will be performances. The concert on Saturday, scheduled from 6pm to 8pm, will feature Visage in the Bahamas Village, Son del Solar on the main stage, and the Willis and the Illest band on the international stage,” said Ms Johnson.

Moreover, to assist with attendance numbers, gates will be open until 7pm. After that time no one will be allowed entry.

As the exclusive bank of the festival, BOB will once again make it a cashless environment, providing banking services to vendors and ensuring that only ‘Festival Dollars’ are accepted throughout the event. Presenting sponsor of the festival is once again Jetblue.

‘Cargo’ to celebrate starstudded premiere at Atlantis

“L

uther” star Warren Brown, “Heroes” star Jimmy Jean-Louis and “Queen Sugar” star Omar J Dorsey will attend the gala premiere for the award-winning Bahamian film “Cargo” at Atlantis Paradise Island.

The movie – the largest Bahamian film project in history – will celebrate its local debut at the resort’s in-house theatre on October 19.

Award-winning British actor Warren Brown leads a cast of established and emerging stars in this action-packed human drama written and directed by Bahamian filmmaker Kareem Mortimer.

Brown is well known for his roles as Andy Holt in the soap opera “Hollyoaks”, Lee Hibbs in the three-part BBC drama series “Occupation” and DS Ripley in the acclaimed BBC crime drama “Luther”.

In “Cargo”, he takes on the multifaceted role of Kevin, a Bahamian fisherman with a gambling addiction who takes a job smuggling Haitians to Florida in a desperate ploy to support his family.

“After the many years of hard work that went into the production of ‘Cargo’, it’s really exciting to celebrate the Bahamian premiere of the film with the cast and crew,” said Alexander Younis, the film’s producer.

“This will be the first time that some of the cast will watch the film in a theatrical setting, so it’s a very special moment and we’re happy to share this film with the Bahamian audience.”

American actor Omar J Dorsey will join Brown and Jean-Louis at the ‘Cargo’ premiere. Dorsey plays Eddie, Kevin’s long-time friend and conscience.

Dorsey has appeared in “The Blind Side”, “Django Unchained” and “Selma”. In 2016, he began starring as Hollywood Desonier in the Oprah Winfrey Network drama series “Queen Sugar”.

On his upcoming trip to the Bahamas, Dorsey commented, “I can’t wait to see my friends and all of my family out there.”

‘Cargo’ won a Bahamian Icon Award in 2017 ahead of its official release. The film has been making the festival circuit within the last few months, recently winning the Amnesty International Human Rights Film Prize at the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival.

It had its world premiere at the Miami Film Festival’s 34th edition earlier this year.

“Cargo,” is loosely based on Mr Mortimer’s multi-award-winning short film “Passage”, and explores the dangerous and pitiless world of human smuggling.

The film, inspired by true events, aims to examine the world’s refugee and immigration crisis from a local perspective.

New movement seeks to ‘EaseUp’ on violent crime

ITH local DJs, recording artists and social media personalities at its helm, the “EaseUp” campaign is seeking to create awareness about the cause and effect of violence within Bahamian communities while also trying to help curb it.

“EaseUp” uses young influential role models who already have a social media following, and in some cases, personal experiences of violence.

The campaign is an initiative of Fam Entertainment, the creative team behind Fam Fest, the popular 20-year-old event that provides wholesome fun for all.

The campaign’s mission is to create vibrant, youthful initiatives to target crime and meet the needs of those in the innercity communities. “EaseUp” has three phases: video testimonials from artists, an “EaseUp” album and “EaseUp” centres.

Travon Patton, a spokesperson for Fam Entertainment, said the campaign is important because young people need to be positively affirmed by people who are deemed role models and mentors.

“We have forgotten the power of our own testimony. So many are quick to scream for the death penalty before genuinely investing in ways to inspire, employ and appreciate young persons who are in desperate need of affirmation and direction. The ‘EaseUp’ campaign is here to show our community that there are a group of young persons that have not given up on our country and are willing to inspire youth to adopt a better perspective on life. We cannot be satisfied with giving the future of our country

to the courts and prison cells. We believe initiatives like ‘EaseUp’ can encourage, guide and create positive solutions within our inner cities,” he said.

The recent soft launch of the FamTV online channel also featured the unveiling of “EaseUp” at the scenic Island House Cinema.

During the launch, featured artists, musicians, television and social media personalities, as well as community leaders walked the red carpet, swayed to the soulful sounds of Nevandria Lyriic and The All For One Band, all while being treated to a number of presentations and interviews about Fam Entertainment’s plans to impact the social and creative landscape of the country.

The pre-show featured Jaquay Adderley as ‘Bertum the Bubbla’, ‘EaseUp Show’ host Denielle Miller and celebrity internet sensation TAP, as they provided entertainment for online audiences before the main presentation.

The main segment, hosted by John Dennis Stewart, included presentations and remarks by notable personalities such as Kim Welcome, Denielle Minnis, Judah Forbes, DJ Chronic, TAP, Travon Patton, Keri Sherman, Fort Charlotte MP Mark Humes and Fam CEO William ‘Mark’ Cartwright, as well as acoustic musical presentations by Judah Tha Lion, Najie Dun and Leesa McFall.

“FamTV creates another exciting opportunity for emerging Bahamian talent to be featured and promoted in new and exciting ways. We are dedicated to inspiring our community to do something phenomenal because we are looking for you and we’d like to tell the world about how awesome you are,” said Mr Patton.

“Through this goal, we hope that all sectors of our country can understand the value in our emerging talents and support them before they have to leave our country and be discovered elsewhere in the world. Television production is not easy and is very expensive, however, we hope that our professional community will fill in the gap and provide coverage and programmes in places that do not have the resources.

If we succeed, you will find that the Bahamas is an amazing place to be.

“EaseUp”, he said, has already transformed the lives of many influential personalities and changed the way they approach violent messages and those who have been affected by violent crime. “‘EaseUp’ is already working within community leaders in Englerston and has completed the construction of a car wash for youths who would like to someplace to get funds without resorting to illicit activities while having someplace to study and get involved in feature workshop presentations,” he said.

Exuma concert brings relief

A

special hurricane relief concert spearheaded by Bahamian artist Dillion “D-Mac” McKenzie in Exuma has been deemed a “great success”, as people came out to raise funds and collect essential items for the displaced residents of Ragged Island.

The concert featured both gospel and secular music segments. Participating artists included Dyson Knight, Julien Believe, Christian Massive, Najie Dunn, T J Burrows, Tropical Breeze Band, Down Home Band, Basil Smith, Al Gibson and local Exuma bands and praise teams.

Residents of Exuma and Ragged Island have always had a close relationship. “This is why Exumians willingly reached into their pockets to help their neighbours. The crowd was phenomenal and it was commendable to see the favourable effects of a united effort,” said D-Mac. After the passing of Hurricane Irma, several of the southeast islands were left devastated, including Ragged Island which was was declared unliveable. Those who reside there are doing what they can to rebuild the island.

D-Mac told Tribune Weekend that at the concert everyone answered the call and was willing to show support.

“We decided to bind together and assist our islands that have been devastated,” he said.

A little over $2,000 was raised from the concert with an additional contribution made by the Red Cross.

“We had a great turnout. We met our goal. Everyone who committed to coming did so. It was a night of unity and a great showing of love and support for those who were affected by the Hurricane,” said D-Mac. A presidential concert experience Dexta Daps

The successful staging of the first ‘Presidente Music Vibes Tour’ concert in Nassau featured reggae star Konshens.

The event is the second showcase hosted in the Bahamas by Presidente, a number one beer in the Caribbean, in conjunction with the Bahamian Brewery and Beverage Company (BBB).

Concert-goers are asked to come dressed comfortably, and even barefoot if they choose, as the concert will once be held again at the National Beach Soccer Stadium. It begins at 7pm.

All Summer long, Presidente has been uniting the islands through music via the ‘Presidente Music Vibes Tour’. Along with their Bahamian partners, BBB, they are offering concert experiences on various islands for music lovers from Aruba to the United States.

Tomorrow night’s event features Dexta Daps, who will perform his hits, including “Shabba Madda Pot”. Kent Jones will bring the hype by performing some of his popular Kent Jones singles like “Don’t Mind”.

Organisers believe this concert experience will be just as successful as the first showcase held two weeks ago.

Following the successful launch of the Bahamas leg of the ‘Presidente Music Vibes Tour’, the two companies have joined forces to usher in a in a brand new contest which will give lucky locals the opportunity to win an all-expense paid trip to the Dominican Republic.

Over a two-week period from October 1 to 14, participants had to retrieve the codes found under the bottle caps of each purchased bottle of Presidente Beer and register those codes on the beer’s official website, www.presidentebeer.com.

BTVI welcomes guests to upgraded massage spa

T

he Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) has opened the doors of its newly renovated massage therapy spa on the main campus, Old Trail Road.

The vision of the chair of the Beauty Trades department, Dr Donnalee Minnis, the project cost just under $50,000 and took four months to complete. The spa includes 10 massage rooms, one of which is exclusively for couples. This is in addition to a spa lounge and two shower facilities and an adjacent classroom.

The project manager was Gus Ferguson, chair of BTVI’s Construction Trades. Forty students are presently in the programme. They are trained to work in fitness centres and spas, as well as at medical facilities and even on sports teams. Furthermore, they are trained to start their own businesses, as BTVI’s motto is, “To provide learning opportunities that enable individuals to be globally competitive and economically independent.”

BTVI’s president, Dr Robert W Robertson, commended Dr Minnis

and her team of instructors for their efforts.

“When our students exit our halls as massage therapists, they leave with skills that prepare them to not only be employees – but employers. Our massage therapy students are prepared to run their own businesses, providing professional, yet personal service,” said Dr Robertson.

Speaking directly to the students, Dr Robertson added that they should use their hands as tools.

“Your hands are able to bring a level of healing to the body, while calming the spirit. You take your healing hands wherever you go…when you entered our gates, you entered with a dream. You came with a vision.

And while here and beyond, you have – and will continue to – discover the possibilities,” he stated.

The massage therapy programme, which was launched in 2007, includes topics such as anatomy, physiology, allied modalities, HIV precautions and therapist/client inter-dynamics.

The spa will receive clients when students have practicums including an upcoming session slated between October 23 and December 14.

T’S the hottest commodity in the makeup industry this season, and now it’s made its debut in Nassau. After a hugely successful launch in the US last month, Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty products were recently introduced to Bahamian customers thanks to the freight and cargo company Mr Ship It. Since the cosmetic line’s introduction in Sephora stores, items from the collection have been in high demand and are being sold at a “first come, first serve” basis.

To help local ladies get their hands on some of the products, Mr Ship It hosted a special Rihanna themed evening at the British Colonial Hilton featuring makeup artist Lucy Lu and host Natural Empress.

“Within four days after the online announcement, the event gathered over 1,000 sign-ups.

From that list, 200 lucky ladies were randomly selected to attend the free Fenty Beauty Experience,” said Eugene Wright, Mr Ship It company representative.

Makeup artist Lucy Lu and her team help guests find the right Fenty Beauty products for them.

Using the Fenty Beauty products at the event, Lucy Lu’s team of four makeup artists performed demonstrations on the guests, matching them with their correct colour from the impressive line of 40 different foundation shades.

“Guests were able to order their favourite products with guaranteed delivery within five business days or sooner. Guests loved the chance to buy and test, as many thought they were a specific shade when using the website, however, when they came to the Fenty Beauty event they discovered they were off. So testing the foundation in person was the best part,” said Mr Wright.

To accommodate those not in attendance, the representative said Mr Ship It also recently opened a pop-up testing booth at their Mackey Street location.

“Anyone can visit the Mr Ship It’s Mackey Street store to test their foundation and order instantly. The price is all inclusive with no additional fees,” said Mr Wright.

Bahamian designers demand the

esigners and models in the local fashion industry are seeking to make a big impact on the industry in the Bahamas, demanding more attention and investment be given to their craft. And they do not have to resort to marching or breaking down walls to prove their point. Sheer talent has resulted in Bahamian designers being increasingly noticed on the international stage, and they feel it is about time that they receive the same kind of recognition at home.

“It’s time that we as the Bahamas host a forum that celebrates our own Bahamian designers,” said Cardell McClam, co-producer of the upcoming Bahamas Fashion Week.

“We need to promote our individualistic identity in the Caribbean and invite the world to see. We want them to feature our designers in magazines... whatever promotion these designers can get. Let’s make money here at home. It’s a billion-dollar industry and we need to harness it. The government has done a good job with promoting and supporting art and music, but fashion needs the same support. That is why we created a forum where we find a new identity, Bahamian models, designers and photographe

Bahamas Fashion Week opens on October 26, with eight designers slated for the showcase. The Meliá Nassau Beach hotel will serve as the venue, with nightly showcases scheduled from 7pm10pm until October 28.

Joe Stubbs, Bahamas Fashion Week organiser, hosted a pre-party last Saturday night at the La Caverna restaurant in the Caves Village. He is confident Fashion Week will be a success and promises show-stopping performances each night.

Eight Bahamian fashion designers will have their best work on display. They include the late Shane Rolle, as well as designers Judy Deleveaux, Apryl Burrows and Cedric Bullard.

In addition to the evening fashion shows, expect to enjoy educational sessions starting at around 1pm each afternoon, as well as a pop-up Bahamas Fashion Museum. The museum, called “Crown of Light”, is sponsored by Diamonds International and promises to be a real attention-grabber.

An Emerging Junior Designers programme was launched on the night of the pre-party. As a result, a group of students aged 12 to 17 is now being mentored leading up to the opening night of Fashion Week. They left the pre-party to dash home and begin the first of eight challenging assignments that must be completed for opening night.

Their skills training will include fabric sourcing, design and development, as well as sales and distribution. Joe considers the juniors programme as key to securing the success of Bahamas Fashion Week and the sustainability of the future of Bahamian fashion.

Milan George, a participating model, said she is excited for Bahamas Fashion Week because she considers the designs that are to be showcased high-quality pieces of art. She is encouraging the public to come out and support the event and to be willing to invest in the visions of their fellow Bahamians, as opposed to always purchasing labels from foreign designers.

Dennis Williamson, a male model, has had no prior runway experience. And he almost failed to go the casting for Fashion Week because he did not think he had a chance. The second to the last to audition, Dennis received the call three weeks later. He is now anticipating that this will be the first in a series of fashion shows that will allow him to develop his modelling skills further.

Karin says: “Cate knows her own style and isn’t afraid to take chances, which sometimes pays off, and sometimes – like here – doesn’t quite work. I love the shoes and the fact that she wore pants. But the blouse...those ruffles are just plain ugly, even offensively so.”

Farah says: “I didn’t get the memo, is it Halloween already? This look on Cate is just horrendous. The blouse with those unattractive frills are a big no no, especially when paired with those black slacks. She didn’t even try.”

Karin says: “Is she a member of the Pantsuit Nation? Because this is such a Hillary Clinton look. It’s usually an attractive option for women politicians, but it’s just not stylish enough for an actress on a red carpet.

And those square-toed shoes are hideous.”

Farah says: “I know I will be sideeyed for this, but I actually like this ensemble and the weird shoes. For some reason it comes together in a very peculiar and odd way, yet not unattractive.”

Black novelist Jesmyn Ward ‘overjoyed’ by MacArthur win

n African-American novelist praised for her raw and powerful depictions of poor African-Americans confronting racial and economic inequalities in the rural South said Wednesday that winning a MacArthur fellowship gives her time and freedom.

“I think those are the two most important gifts you can give to an artist,” Jesmyn Ward said in a video Wednesday from Tulane University, where she’s a professor. “So I am deeply humbled and also overjoyed.”

It marked the beginning of the FBI’s first wire-wearing undercover mission, documented in David Howard’s “Chasing Phil: The Adventures of Two Undercover Agents with the

Foundation announced she was among 24 recipients of the so-called genius grants, which bestow $625,000 on each winner over five years.

Ward was the 2011 recipient of the National Book Award for her second novel, “Salvage the Bones,” about the struggles of a poor African-American family in her native Mississippi, set against the backdrop of Hurricane Katrina’s strike on the Gulf Coast.

The author grew up in DeLisle, Mississippi , a community of about 1,100 residents where more than a third live below the poverty line. Her three novels to date have been set in a fictional Mississippi coastal town called Bois Sauvage.

Now 40, Ward said she’s currently working on a novel set in early 1800s New Orleans at the height of the domestic slave trade.

“It’s a novel unlike anything that I’ve written. ... I’m a little nervous, afraid, but also aware of the fact that this novel will make me grow and evolve as a human being, and I’m looking forward to that,” Ward said.

The MacArthur Foundation praised Ward as a “fiction writer exploring the bonds of community and familial love among poor African Americans in the rural South.” It added she “captures moments of beauty, tenderness, and

Taking Wedick and Brennan everywhere from Chicago to Tokyo, Kitzer introduced his proteges to a vast underground network of fellow crooks. Along the way, in hotel rooms, bars, at poolsides and dance clubs, Kitzer developed a fondness for the undercover agents, which made his eventual arrest more complicated.

While much of Howard’s work surrounds Wedick and Brennan’s relationship with their target, he also unpacks the impact of this case on the FBI. Operation Fountain Pen played a pivotal role in expanding the FBI’s focus to include white-collar crime.

Howard sticks squarely to the facts in his telling of the agents’ journey, providing more of an overview of events in lieu of textured scenes. This lack of immersion may leave readers feeling disconnected from the thick of the conflict.

Also, the complexity of the scams Kitzer orchestrated (they even confused the FBI) combined with the quantity of deals laid out in the book makes for a few discombobulating moments.

Bright spots remain. This pursuit began before the FBI had anything resembling the extensive training that undercover agents receive today, meaning Wedick and Brennan forged their own path in tracking down Kitzer. The decisions they made on the fly prove an intriguing facet of the story, as does the peek into the world of organized crime.

Watching Netflix’ ‘Stranger Things’ likely to cost you more

N

etflix is raising the price for its most popular US video streaming plan by 10 per cent — a move aimed at bringing in more money to outbid HBO, Amazon and other rivals for addictive shows such as “Stranger Things.”

The change announced Thursday affects most of Netflix’s 53 million US subscribers.

WHAT GOES UP

Netflix will now charge $11 per month instead of $10 for a plan that includes HD and allows people to simultaneously watch programs on two different internet-connected devices.

The price for another plan that includes ultra-high definition, or 4K, video, is going up by 17 per cent, to $14 from $12 a month. A plan that limits subscribers to one screen at a time without high-definition will remain at $8 a month.

The increase will be the first in two years for Netflix, although it won’t seem that way for millions of subscribers. That’s because Netflix temporarily froze its rates for long-time subscribers

the last two times it raised its prices, delaying the most recent increases until the second half of last year for them.

Netflix isn’t giving anyone a break this time around. It will start emailing notifications about the new prices to affected subscribers Oct. 19, giving them 30 days to accept the higher rates, switch to a cheaper plan or cancel the service.

WHY PRICES ARE RISING The price increase are being driven

by Netflix’s desire to boost its profits as it spends more money to finance a critically acclaimed slate of original programming that includes shows such as “House of Cards,” ‘‘Orange Is The New Black,” and “The Crown,” in addition to “Stranger Things.”

Those series’ success helped Netflix land more Emmy award nominations than any TV network besides HBO this year. It’s also the main reason Netflix’s US audience has nearly doubled since the February 2013 debut of “House of Cards” kicked off its expansion into original programming.

But paying for exclusive TV series and films hasn’t been cheap. Netflix

expects to spend $6 billion a year alone on programming this year, and the expenses are likely to rise as it competes against streaming rivals such as Amazon, Hulu, YouTube and, potentially, Apple for the rights to future shows and movies.

Amazon (at $99 per year, or about $8.25 per month) offers a lower price than Netflix’s while Hulu’s monthly fee ranges from $8 for a plan with commercials to $11 for a commercial-free plan.

POSSIBILITY OF BACKLASH

Netflix believes its price rate is justified by recent service improvements, such as a feature that allows people to download shows onto phones or other devices to watch them offline.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Mark Mahaney believes Netflix’s programming line-up is so compelling that the service could charge even higher prices and still retain most of its audience. He predicted the upcoming price increase will generate an additional $650 million in revenue next year.

But Netflix subscribers have rebelled against price increases in the past, most

notably in 2011 when the company stopped bundling its streaming service with its DVD-by-mail service, resulting in price increases of as much as 60 per cent for customers who wanted both plans. Netflix lost 600,000 subscribers and its stock price plummeted by 80 per cent in the subsequent backlash. The company rebounded strongly, though, propelling its stock from a split-adjusted low of $7.54 in 2012 to $194.39 Thursday after investors reacted positively to the higher prices, driving up the shares by five per cent.

And Netflix blamed a temporary slowdown in subscriber growth last year on the lifting of its price freeze on long-time customers who decided to drop the service rather than pay slightly more money.

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter believes less than 10 per cent of current subscribers will cancel Netflix as prices rise again, but he predicts it will be tougher to attract new customers who will choose Amazon’s cheaper alternative.

Every season there seems to be a new food fad to follow.

One constant is that salads (minus commercial dressings) are good for you. That said, the days of a salad being Iceberg lettuce and wedges of tomato are gone. Salads are now complex creations of lettuces and greens, sprouts and grains that are meals in themselves instead of appetisers or side dishes.

There is a demand too that the components of salads should be organic and grown in vegetable or animal matter at a suitable level of decay. It has reached the point where a Caesar salad – once the high water mark of salads – is verboten because of its Parmesan cheese, croutons and coddled eggs.

It should be pointed out that salad makings bought in plastic pouches from the food store are not cheap.

Greens are also produced by Malabar spinach (not true spinach), beets, chard, basil and pea shoots. You probably throw lots of nutrition away when you weed your yard. Portulaca – called pussley locally – has a lovely peppery flavour that people will love if you avoid telling them they are eating a weed.

Greens, of course, are primarily for cooking. It is hard to beat a spinach and Brie omelet. Beet and chard greens are delicious. Greens can be added to a broth to make a meal. Bahamian children have become used to cheap Ramen noodles as an emergency meal but adults are now getting into quality home-made broths and using Udon noodles.

If we forget all about health matters for a meal or two we can prepare greens as they were first used – cooked to tenderness in bacon or ham fat.

‘Moderation in All Things’ is a popular mantra but that also means moderation in moderation now and then.

Rediscovering an angler’s paradise Andros lodge promotes fly fishing around the world

W

hen Jason Saunders travels throughout the United States and the region promoting Eva’s Bonefish Lodge, he is driven by his love for the Bahamas and his new-found passion for fly fishing. In the last four years since the lodge’s opening – it is owned by his mother, Eva Saunders – he has been practicing the art of fly fishing, learning from the talented guides that offer services to the lodge.

Jason has discovered that the Bahamas is an angler’s paradise – the shallow waters which define the country’s seascape provide for pristine fly fishing conditions. The flats are filled with fish anglers rave about – bonefish, permit, tarpon and snappers, to name a few. The country which known for crystal clear waters boasts of a visibility in the ocean that is unmatched anywhere in the world, making it a flawless playground for fly fishing.

Eva’s Bonefish Lodge is situated in Andros, the largest island in the chain and the one most filled with creeks and flats teeming with marine life. Guides Lavardo Burrows, Sean Riley and Solomon Murphy are often on hand to give guests the experience of a lifetime. In Staniard Creek, guests leave from the lodge’s beach by boat to visit the guides’ favourite spots, including Blanket Sound about two miles away; 15 to 20 miles north to visit Mastic Point and Stafford Creek, and 25 miles to Conch Sound – all on the east coast of Andros.

Fly fishing often happens from a bonefish boat, like the 17-foot Maverick Mirage that fishing guide Solomon Murphy owns. But sometimes anglers want to experience fly fishing while wading in the water – an experience that evades them if they choose other fishing destinations around the world. Only one or two people can go out on the boat at a time. However, some anglers move in groups of about 12 and head out for weeklong fishing trips, travelling in a vessel that is outfitted with beds and a kitchen. These trips usually happen more than 50 miles out from the shore in a 90-foot steel hull modified fishing boat. Guides may also use catamarans and other vessels for their expeditions.

Eva’s Bonefish Lodge in Andros

“Fly fishing is fun,” said Solomon. “It’s exciting – the catch. And it’s sustainable because it’s a catch and release. It’s a team sport and it requires a lot of technique and communication. I am usually the one that sees the fish first.

I have to put the boat in a position so I don’t get hit; then I instruct the angler to make a cast.

When he makes his cast, I instruct him on how to retrieve the fly. When the fish eats the fly, I tell him to set and then raise the tip of the rod to allow the fish to run; so he allows the line to slide through his fingers until all of the fly line is out of the boat. He fights the fish, the fish runs, he allows it to run, reels it in, allow it to run again until he gets it back to the boat. After his catch, he releases the fish.”

Anglers rave about their sport because they say the level of thrill in actually making the catch and then fighting the fish is unfathomable unless experienced.

Once the guide points out a fish to them, their job is to make the catch. If the expedition happens in deeper waters, anglers often don’t even get to see the fish. Once the catch is made, the clicking sound from the reel is the only audible proof while the angler fights

his unseen opponent. An exciting fish to look for, according to guides, is the “grey ghost” – a completely silver fish which runs along the ocean floor creating a mirror-like effect on the floor, making it difficult to spot.

Fish found in shallow waters starting at six inches are usually two- to three-pound catches, while waters starting at five to six feet can bring fish starting at three to 12 pounds. Trips are usually half-day at four hours, or anglers may take a full-day, eight-hour trip.

Andros is home to nearly 100 professional fly fishing guides, and plans are underway to create a curriculum so that these guides can pass on their knowledge to the next generation. But Jason believes the government is not doing enough to promote what is a multi-million dollar industry. As he travels to promote Eva’s Bonefish Lodge, he often wonders why there are no government representatives promoting the Bahamas as the best place ever to cast a line.

“They are selling themselves short,” he said.

“Where are the Bahamians participating in fly fishing tournaments and major conferences all around the world? No one is out there talking about this sport and tapping into the vast amount of potential visitors to our islands, specifically for fly fishing.”

He often spends his own money, he said, to make trips to promote the lodge owned by his mother.

A veteran in the hotel industry, Eva Saunders decided to invest in her native settlement, Staniard Creek, upon retiring. She advises all Bahamians to consider returning to the settlements on the Family Islands where they grew up and make some kind of investment to help stimulate the economy on the islands. Eva, a mother of three, now lives between New Providence and her hometown, and is more excited about island life than the city. She welcomes people from around the world to her lodge, offering them home-cooked meals and all of the amenities that anglers need for their trip.

Visitors from all over the world enjoy fly fishing in Andros by either boat or by wading through the flats on foot.

literary lives- gertrude bell

Queen of the desert with her own place in history Sir Christopher Ondaatje reminds us of the English writer, traveller, mountaineer, and archaeologist who became an influential policy maker in the Middle East in the early part of the 20th century.

Gertrude Bell was born on July 14, 1868 in Washington New Hall, County Durham, England to an extremely wealthy family whose wealth enabled her to have a good education and to satisfy her hunger for adventure. Her grandfather was Sir Isaac Lowthian Bell, an industrialist and a Liberal Member of Parliament in Benjamin Disraeli’s government. Her curiosity and intellect exposed her to international affairs of state and a later involvement in international politics.

Bell’s mother died in 1871 in childbirth when she was three years old. As a result she had a very close relationship with her father which continued throughout her life. Her father re-married – Florence Bell (née Oliffe) – and it was she who contributed much to Gertrude Bell’s intellectual development.

Gertrude Bell was educated at Queen’s College in London and then at Lady Margaret Hall at Oxford University. She studied Modern History and received a first class honours degree in two years. James Buchan (TheGuardian) has written that she was “one of Oxford University’s most brilliant students, the greatest woman mountaineer of her age, an archaeologist and linguist, passionate, unhappy and rich. Bell saw in Arab male society, and what US President Woodrow Wilson called ‘the whole disgusting scramble’ for the Middle East after the First World War, opportunities that were unthinkable at home.

Bell never married nor had children. She befriended the impecunious British Colonial administrator Sir Frank Swettenham on a visit to Singapore with her brother Hugo in 1903 and had a brief but passionate affair with him after his retirement to England in 1904. He was rejected by her father. She also had an unconsummated affair with Major General Charles

Doughty-Wylie, a married man, with whom she exchanged letters from 19131915. After his death in 1915 during the Gallipoli Campaign, Bell launched herself into her work.

“I will have no locked cupboards in my life.”

Bell’s uncle, Sir Frank Lascelles, was British Minister at Tehran, and after leaving Oxford in 1892 Bell travelled to Persia to visit him. Her book “Persian Pictures” (1894) describes this journey. Much of the next decade Bell spent mountaineering in Switzerland and developing a passion for archaeology and languages. She became fluent in Arabic, Persian, French and German as well as Italian and Turkish. She went to the Middle East again in 1899, and travelled across Arabia six times during the next 12 years.

Between 1899 and 1904 she devoted herself to mountaineering and conquered a number of mountains (once ridding herself of her clothes to climb in her underwear), including La Meije and Mount Blanc. One of these – the Gertrudspitze in the Bernese Oberland – was named after her. She failed in her attempt on the Finsteraarhorn in 1902 when a bad storm forced her to spend 48 hours clinging to a rope on a rock face, nearly losing her life. Her own observations “Syria: The Desert and The Sown” was published in 1907 and introduced the Arabian desert to the Western world, and cities like Damascus, Jerusalem, Beirut, Antioch and Alexandretta.

In 1907 she journeyed to the Ottoman Empire and worked with the archaeologist Sir William Ramsey. Their excavations were published in “A Thousand and One Churches”. That same year they discovered the ruins of an old city in northern Syria on the banks of the Euphrates River which they speculated might be the city of Bersiba in Ptolemy’s list of names.

In 1909 she left for Mesopotamia and visited the Hittite city of Carchemish, mapped the ruin of Ukhaidir, and went to Babylon and Najaf. In Carchemish she met T E Lawrence. She was the second foreign woman (after Lady Anne Blunt) to visit Ha’il – after a difficult Arabian journey. It was only in 1927 – a year after her death – that Dame Florence Bell, her step-mother, published the two volumes of Gertrude Bell’s collected correspondence, written during the 20 preceding World War I.

When World War I broke out in 1914, Gertrude Bell immediately asked for a post in the Middle East, but this was denied. Instead she worked for the Red Cross in France. However, the next year British Intelligence summoned her to Cairo to the Arab Bureau headed

by General Gilbert Clayton, initially helping get British troops through the deserts. From then on, and until her death in 1926, she was the only woman with political power in the Middle East. With her facility with languages and with her ability to establish close

She met T E Lawrence again in 1915 who, like her, had earned First Class Honours in Modern History and spoke Arabic, Persian, French and German. Both Lawrence and Bell were assigned to British Army Intelligence in Cairo because they both had travelled the Arabian deserts and had established ties with the local tribes, acquiring unique knowledge of the people and the land before World War I. Although of small stature – both barely 5’5” tall – they had great intelligence, determination, and extraordinary powers of endurance. She helped Lt Commander David Hogarth accumulate information on the Arab tribes who might be persuaded to join forces with the British against the Germans and the Turks. It was an unusually delicate task where the Muslim Arabs were persuaded to join the Christian British to side against the Muslim Turks and the Christian Germans. The information was vital to Lawrence’s eventual success in making this happen.

On March 3, 1916 General Clayton abruptly sent Gertrude Bell to Basra to advise the British High Commissioner Sir Percy Cox about the area which the British had captured in 1914 and which she knew better than any other Westerner. Cox gave Bell an office in his headquarters where she worked when she was not at military offices in Basra.

She drew maps to get the British army safely to Baghdad, and was given the title “Liaison Officer, Correspondent to Cairo”. She was also field controller to St John Philby – the British explorer and Colonial Intelligence Officer – and was responsible for teaching him something about political manoeuvring. She was a useful adviser.

These Kurds were called gendarmes, but in reality were butchers; bands of them were publicly ordered to take parties of Armenians of both sexes to various destinations, but had secret instructions to destroy the males, children and old women .. religious and tribal divisions in Iraq would always undermine an Iraq state. Gertrude Bell however was passionately for Arab independence – underestimating the power of religion in Iraqi affairs and particularly the Shia clergy. She was wrong, and the Shia tribes, together with those in the Middle Euphrates, revolted, causing

the death of hundreds of British soldiers and over 8,000 Iraqis – before the revolt was suppressed.

“We as outsiders can’t differentiate between Sunni and Shi’ah, but leave it to them and they’ll get over the difficulty by some kind of hanky panky, just as the Turks did, and for the present it’s the only way of getting over it. I don’t for a moment doubt that the final authority must be in the hands of the Sunnis, in spite of their numerical inferiority, otherwise you will have a mujtahid-run theoretic state, which is the very devil.”

Winston Churchill called the 1921 Conference in Cairo where Bell, Cox and Lawrence determined the boundaries of the British mandate and Bell, the only woman at the Conference, won her argument. She, Cox and Lawrence worked tirelessly to establish the countries Transjordan and Iraq – to be presided over by the Kings Abdullah and Faisal, sons of the instigator of the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire (1915-1916), Hussein bin Ali, Sherif and Emir of Mecca. Bell served the British High Commission advisory group in Baghdad until her death in 1926. She opposed the Zionist movement arguing that it would be unfair to impose Jewish rule on Arab inhabitants in Palestine. She wrote that she regarded the Balfour Declaration with deep distrust saying, “It’s like a nightmare in which you see all the horrible things which are going to happen and can’t stretch out your hand to prevent them.”

Bell was given the nickname “alKhatun” (a Lady of the Court who Acts for the Benefit of the State) by the Persians. She was a confidante of King Faisal (the protégé of T E Lawrence who had been ousted by the French in Syria) and helped ease his role amongst Iraq’s other leaders.

When Sir Percy Cox left Baghdad in 1923 Bell lost her bureaucratic protector, and she devoted more of her time to her first love - archaeology. King Faisal helped Bell found Baghdad’s Iraqi Archaeological Museum and to establish the British School of Archaeology in Iraq. Remarkably, the museum has survived.

Many consider that the present troubles in Iraq stem from the boundaries that Bell conceived to create its borders. However, many of the ensuing problems were foreseen, and there was no permanent solution for creating a single state that dealt with the many and inevitable divisive forces. Forgotten facts Paul C Aranha quantities at Kirkuk in 1927, the Iraqi monarchy survived Turkish intrigue, Saudi aggression, and repeated uprisings, the worst in 1941 when pro-German officers drove the King and Nuri Said, the Prime Minister, into exile. But the collapse of British power and prestige at Suez in 1956 marked the end of Britain’s power. Faisal II and the royal family were murdered in a republican coup d’etat on July 14, 1958. Eventually, and finally, the Ba’ath seized power in 1968, built a prosperous despotism in the 1970s but destroyed itself and the country in hopeless military adventures in Iran in the 1980s and Kuwait in 1990.

When Bell returned to Britain in 1925 she faced family problems and ill health. Her family’s fortune had declined with the onset of post-World War I strikes and economic depression in Europe. She returned to Baghdad but developed pleurisy. The stress of authoring a prodigious output of books, correspondence, and intelligence reports; of recurring bronchial attacks brought on by heavy smoking, of bouts of malaria; and, finally, of coping with Baghdad’s summer heat – all took a toll on her health.

Always frail, she became nearly emaciated.

Gertrude Bell was discovered dead on July 12, 1926 of an apparent overdose of sleeping pills. There is still debate as to whether the overdose was an intentional suicide or accidental. She is buried in the British Cemetery in Baghdad’s Bab al-Sharji district. Large numbers of people attended her funeral including British officials and the King of Iraq. King Faisal is said to have watched the funeral from his private balcony as they carried her coffin to the cemetery.

“At times they are a good and quiet company, the dead; they will not interrupt your musings, but when they speak, whether they be Jews, or Turks, or heathens, they will speak in a tongue all can understand, there are even countries where the moving breathing people are less intelligible, dwell in a world further apart from you, than the silent population under the earth.”

Curiously, James Buchan in his 2003 Guardian article, Miss Bell’s Lines in the Sand,

provides a comprehensive conclusion to Gertrude Bell’s extraordinary accomplishments and legacy: “The historical waters have closed over T E Lawrence. Even back in the 1970s, I could find nobody with any recollection of him at the scenes of his exploits in Western Arabia. But Gertrude Bell is still a name in Baghdad. Even in conversation with the vicious and cornered cadres of Saddam Hussein’s regime, her name will come up to evoke, for a moment, an innocent Baghdad of picnics in the palm gardens and bathing parties in the Tigris.

“Yet Bell and her superior as British High Commissioner, Sir Percy Cox, laid down policies of state in Iraq that were taken up

by Saddam’s Arab Ba’ath socialist party. Those policies were to retain, if necessary by violence, the Kurdish mountains as a buffer against Turkey and Russia; to promote Sunni Muslims and other minorities over the Shia majority; to repress the Shia clergy in Najef, Kerbela and Kazimain, or expel them to Iran; to buy off the big land owners and tribal elders; to stage disreputable plebiscites; and to deploy air power as a form of political control. ‘Iraq can only be ruled by force’, a senior Ba’ath official told me in 1999. ‘Mesopotamia is not a civilised state’, Bell wrote to her father on December 8, 1920.

“The Ba’ath is facing extinction.

Any US civil and military administration in its place will have the precedent of Bell’s 1920 White Paper (typically, the first ever written by a woman), review of the Civil Administration of Mesopotamia. Sixteen volumes of diaries and about 1,600 letters to her parents, transcribed and posted on the web by the University of Newcastle Library, are a must-read at The Pentagon, less for their portrait of an oriental culture in its last phase as for their perilous mingling of political insight and blind elation.”

A good, old-fashioned ‘jumper’ church

ike so many other kids in the Bahamas, I had two mothers – my birth mother and Rosa, who came to work of my family after my sister Annie was born and watched me come into this world. She stayed with us until long after my mother’s death. Rosa was a Long Island lady. Her friends called her “Titta” and we loved her dearly.

Some 40 years after Rosa died, I was taken to meet Mr Taylor, the proprietor of a liquor store in Clarence Town Island who happened to be blind. On hearing the words, “Mr Taylor, I would like you to meet Paul Aranha,” the blind man turned to face me and there was no doubt in my mind that he could see me; perhaps through me, all the way into my soul. I can still hear him say, emphasising each word, “Paul Aranha.

You’re Titta’s baby. You and Annie, but you’re the one she loved.”

My parents worked, so Rosa raised the last three Aranha children. She fed us, washed us, bandaged our wounds and taught us to mind our behaviour.

She also took us to church, but never on a Sunday. Sundays belonged to St Matthew’s Anglican Church, to be blessed by Father Knowles. Rosa took us on weekdays, at night. We might go to Rosa’s Annex Baptist Church on Wulff Road, but “the jumper church”

on Earnest Street, in The Pond, at the corner of York Street, was closer.

The details of these outings are fuzzy, but I do know that the minister seemed to control the congregation, in both body and mind, whipping them up into a frenzy, making them rise up and jump around, as if in a trance.

In his book, “The Measure of a Man”, Sir Sidney Poitier wrote about his similar experiences: “A jumper church was the kind of church where, at every session, the minister would whip the congregation into a kind of psychological frenzy...jumping up from their seats to prance about in a trance, while speaking in tongues... this sounded like gibberish...but sounded genuine to me... many of them would become so overwhelmed...that they’d slip into a kind of jerking, epileptic-like fit. Once in that state, they would be cared for, and nurtured back to normal by other members of the congregation. By the end of the evening everybody would be sitting prim and proper in their chairs, fanning themselves.”

There was no air-conditioning and we would go out into the night carrying those fans.

A gentle giant who stole our hearts Big Jake went on daily drives with his owner Leandro Vazquez.

So Jake, when greeted by amazed well-wishers, was frequently called Beethoven. He took it all in his stride and would offer his paw in recognition and greeting. He would patiently and happily give that enormous paw, over and over again.

Jake’s “mother”, Patricia Vazquez, a great animal lover and supporter of the BHS, says Jake was a natural leader.

He was patient and tolerant of the smaller dogs at the farm, they would run up to him and lick him, but they showed him great respect. He did not have a best dog friend; he was much more in tune with his human family.

Sadly in mid-July, Jake was diagnosed by Dr Robert Allen as suffer-

Jake and Nati Vazquez found each other while she was in college in the Orlando area. He was just a little guy, and thanks to Nati, he became loved and treasured for his entire life.

Born in July of 2009, Nati kept him and cared for him in her apartment in Orlando, and then brought him to the Bahamas at six months old. His life was one of attention, wagging his tail and greeting those who wished to get to know him.

The children’s movie “Beethoven” was very popular in the Bahamas.

The first film was released in 1992, and there were seven sequels – almost everybody has seen at least one of the films and has fallen in love with the star, Beethoven, the St Bernard dog.

Take a cup full of sweetness, a bowl full of friendliness, a bale of energy and a ton of love and put it all together and you will come up with Jake, the gentle giant, the friendliest St Bernard around.

Jake was very well known in the Lyford Cay community, as he would ride around with his owner, Leandro Vazquez, in the golf cart daily for a morning excursion to pick up the newspaper. Wherever Jake went people would comment about his size and then marvel over how nice, kind and gentle he was. Always ready and willing to pose for one more photograph much to the delight of those who met him.

The golf cart is fitted with speakers so that Leandro can enjoy his native Cuban music while cruising the streets of the community. Enormous Jake would sit right next to him, happily watching everything that was going on around him, his nose twitching at all the different sights and smells Being a St Bernard (a large Swiss breed, bred for life in the mountains as rescue dogs) he needed to be shaved down from his very thick and bushy coat regularly in order to survive happily in the hot Bahamian summers.

Jake’s family was meticulous that he was never too furry. However, he still so enjoyed stretching out on the cool tiles of his home by the sea, basking in the fresh sea breezes.

St Bernards are the famous dogs who go out into the snow with a small keg of brandy attached around their necks to search for survivors of avalanches in the mountains, and provide them with some libation to warm then up from within. If Jake had been one to carry anything it would have been a Bahama Mama and a pair of super cool shades!

Alas, on September 26 he was unable to walk. His veterinarian, Dr Allen, who cared for him for years, did what could be done. However, his devastated owner explained to me: smaller dogs could have had the leg amputated, but with a dog his size (160lbs), he was just too heavy to be able to exercise that option and too heavy for the weakened leg. Tearfully and regretfully, the decision was made, he had to be put to sleep.

Now we can imagine that gentle and patient giant playing on the grass near the rainbow bridge with Bruno the magnificent English Mastiff who lived with the same family some years ago.

Jake teaches us many lessons, one of gentleness and tolerance. If you are big and strong, you can still be the nice guy on the block. His passing shows you need to seize the moment when you can, carpe diem. Live it fully, live it fast, and be happy with those you love. Tell them that you love them, you never know what is hiding around that corner for any of us, human or pets.

We bid you adieu Big Jake, many people will notice your absence, none more than your grieving family who gave you such a marvellous life.
