POPE Leo XIV has intervened for the first time in an abortion dispute roiling the U.S. Catholic Church by raising the seeming contradiction over what it really means to be "pro-life."
Leo, a Chicago native, was asked late Tuesday about plans by Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich to give a lifetime achievement award to Illinois Senator Dick Durbin for his work helping immigrants. The plans drew objection from some conservative U.S. bishops given the powerful Democratic senator's support for abortion rights.
Leo called first of all for respect for both sides, but he also pointed out the seeming contradiction in such debates.
"Someone who says 'I'm against abortion but says I am in favor of the death penalty' is not really pro-life," Leo said. "Someone who says that 'I'm against abortion, but I'm in agreement with the inhuman treatment of immigrants in the United States,' I don't know if that's pro-life."
The White House weighs in Leo, whose words echoed a common Catholic argument often made in discussions about abortion, spoke hours before Cupich announced that Durbin had declined the award.
Church teaching forbids abortion but it also opposes capital punishment as "inadmissible" under all circumstances. U.S. bishops and the Vatican have strongly called for humane treatment of migrants, citing the Biblical command to "welcome the stranger."
In his comments about the Illinois dispute, Leo made no mention of U.S. President Donald Trump, whose administration has carried out a surge of immigration enforcement in the Chicago area.
Still, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt weighed in and disputed concerns raised by Pope Leo about the treatment of immigrants, saying
that she "would reject there is inhumane treatment of illegal immigrants in the United States under this administration."
The administration, Leavitt said, "is trying to enforce our nation's laws in the most humane way possible."
Pope Leo says mutual respect is needed Leo said he wasn't familiar with the details of the dispute
over the Durbin award, but said it was nevertheless important to look at the senator's overall record and noted Durbin's four-decade tenure. Responding to a question in English from the U.S. Catholic broadcaster EWTN News, he said there were many ethical issues that constitute the teaching of the Catholic Church.
"I don't know if anyone has all the truth on them but I
had told him to continue receiving Communion. During a visit to Rome that year he received the sacrament during Mass at a church in Francis' diocese.
Durbin was barred from receiving Communion in his home diocese of Springfield in 2004. Springfield Bishop Thomas Paprocki has continued the prohibition and was one of the U.S. bishops who strongly objected to Cupich's decision to honor the senator. Cupich claims Durbin as a member of the Chicago Archdiocese, where Durbin also has a home.
Senator Durbin declines his award
POPE Leo XIV waves as he arrives for his weekly general audience in St. Peter's Square at The Vatican, Wednesday, Oct.1, 2025.
would ask first and foremost that there be greater respect for one another and that we search together both as human beings, in that case as American citizens or citizens of the state of Illinois, as well as Catholics to say we need to you know really look closely at all of these ethical issues and to find the way forward in this church. Church teaching on each one of those issues is very clear," he said.
Cupich was a close adviser to Pope Francis, who strongly upheld church teaching opposing abortion but also criticized the politicizing of the abortion debate by U.S. bishops. Some bishops had called for denying Communion to Catholic politicians who supported abortion rights, including former President Joe Biden.
Biden met on several occasions with Francis and told reporters in 2021 that Francis
In his statement announcing that Durbin would decline the award, Cupich lamented that the polarization in the U.S. has created a situation where U.S. Catholics "find themselves politically homeless" since neither the Republican nor the Democratic party fully encapsulates the breadth of Catholic teaching.
He defended honoring Durbin for his pro-immigration stance, and said the planned Nov. 3 award ceremony could have been an occasion to engage him and other political leaders with the hope of pressing the church's view on other issues, including abortion.
"It could be an invitation to Catholics who tirelessly promote the dignity of the unborn, the elderly, and the sick to extend the circle of protection to immigrants facing in this present moment an existential threat to their lives and the lives of their families," Cupich wrote. Paprocki, for his part, thanked Durbin for declining the award. "I ask that all Catholics continue to pray for our church, our country, and for the human dignity of all people to be respected in all stages of life including the unborn and immigrants," Paprocki said in a Facebook post.

THE Anglican Diocesan Youth Department is calling families, athletes, and community members to gather at the Original Thomas A Robinson Stadium this coming Saturday, October 4, for a day that blends competition with community spirit.
The Alpheus “Hawk” Finlayson Track and Field Classic’s Family Edition returns this year with a special tribute to the late Roscow Davies and his family. In a release issued by the youth department, organisers say the recognition reflects both the family’s contributions to the sporting world and their commitment to the Anglican church.
They noted that the annual event, named after the late Alpheus “Hawk” Finlayson, a Bahamian track and field icon and former President of the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations, was created to celebrate his lifelong dedication to developing young athletes.
This year, organizers say the Classic will carry even deeper meaning under the diocesan theme for 2025, “Family Matters”.
“The Classic is designed to bring together people of all ages. It is about more than athletics. It’s about celebrating who we are — body, mind, and spirit — and passing that legacy of unity and wellness on to the next generation,” said members of the Anglican Diocesan Youth Department.
The day’s activities will cater to both competitors and casual attendees. From track races and health screenings to bounce houses, jumbo games, and a Kiddie Corner designed for children, families can expect a vibrant mix of fun and fellowship. Bahamian comfort food, live entertainment from the New Horizon Pop Band, and giveaways will add to what is expected to be an exciting event. Doctors Hospital will also be present, offering health checks and LAMP sign-ups.
With admission set at only $5 and gates opening at 9am, the Anglican Youth Department is extending an open invitation to families, athletes, and supporters to come together for what promises to be a memorable celebration of faith, fitness, and fellowship.

WHEN couples gather on Long Island from November 7 to 9 for this year’s Pillow Talk in Paradise Marriage Retreat, they will not only enjoy a romantic getaway but also an intentional time of reconnection, recommitment, and renewal.
For Pastor Marvin and Dr Tamalia Gibson, founders of the retreat, one of the most moving highlights each year is the vow renewal ceremony. Both leaders agree that this moment captures the heart of what Pillow Talk in Paradise is all about.
Pastor Marvin reflected on last year’s event. “Seeing couples renew their love, just as if it was their wedding day, was something truly special. Eyes were filled with tears, sincerity was spoken from the heart, and you could sense love being rekindled in real time.”
Dr Tamalia added that the renewal of vows has become the centerpiece of the retreat. She explained that one of the most powerful moments came when couples recited vows written by Bishop Walter S Hanchell, the officiant. “The words were heartfelt, and as couples repeated them, many looked into each other’s eyes with tears and deep emotion. It was an unforgettable moment of recommitment,” she said.
Vow renewals, according to the Gibsons, play a practical role beyond the romantic gesture. In everyday marriage life, routines can erode passion and focus. Both leaders believe ceremonies like these remind couples why they began their journey in the first place. “It centers the couple, reminding them of their covenant with God and each other. In the midst of life’s challenges and hectic schedules, it brings them back to the value of their bond,” they shared.
One of the most defining features of the retreat is the environment it creates. Pastor Marvin explained that couples often find strength in hearing each other’s stories. “When like-minded people gather with the

goal of strengthening their marriage, the benefits are limitless. It is encouraging to listen to how others have navigated challenges,” he said.
For Dr Tamalia, creating a safe and nonjudgmental space is essential. “At Pillow Talk in Paradise, husbands and wives can openly share their challenges and victories. It is a reset button for couples. We laugh, we learn, and we grow together. This year in Long Island, couples will enjoy a romantic vacation, luxurious resort, fun bonding activities, and of course, the vow renewal ceremony,” she explained.
The Gibsons do not simply teach principles; they share from personal experience. They have faced miscarriages, health issues, and even a robbery at gunpoint. Through it all, they say communication, quality time, and reliance on God have carried them forward.
“Our peace in marriage has come from walking through challenges together, not apart. That is the backbone of what we teach,” they explained.
Regular date nights, intentional conversations, and forgiveness are also central to their own marriage practice, lessons they now pass on to other couples.
Every couple arrives at the retreat with different expectations. Some come searching for healing, others for fun, and some simply for renewal. Dr Tamalia shared that this diversity is anticipated.
“We are strategic in our planning. Whether you are married for 50 years or just beginning, there is something to learn. Many
couples last year found healing, others gained new knowledge, and all enjoyed laughter and fun,” she said.
This year’s retreat promises scenic tours, delicious meals, interactive games, and plenty of space for rest and reconnection.
Although the Gibsons are faith leaders, they make clear that Pillow Talk in Paradise is open to all. Both Christians and non-Christians are welcomed. The retreat, however, does not shy away from including the spiritual component.
“Marriage without spirituality is like driving a car with only three tires,” they noted. Last year’s theme, “Igniting Intimacy,” explored emotional, financial, physical, and spiritual intimacy. They believe leaving out spirituality creates an imbalance.
Their leadership team, which includes Pastor Omar and Lady Rosena Stubbs along with Mr Cyril and Mrs Kendria Brown, helps ensure that every participant feels welcomed regardless of background or beliefs. When asked about the non-negotiables for a thriving marriage, the Gibsons point to three essentials: open
communication, quality time, and forgiveness.
Pastor Marvin explained that communication requires vulnerability and trust. Dr. Tamalia emphasized that time together - whether through date nights, vacations, or simply quiet evenings - is irreplaceable. Both agreed that forgiveness, though not always easy, is vital. “Holding onto offense creates distance, but forgiveness liberates both partners,” they said.
The Gibsons have observed recurring struggles among couples: poor communication, financial stress, lack of intimacy, and misunderstanding of love languages. Pillow Talk in Paradise provides opportunities for couples to acknowledge these struggles in community. By sharing openly and learning from one another, couples realise they are not alone. This realisation often sparks growth rather than conflict. “That atmosphere of honesty and hope is what sets Pillow Talk apart,” Pastor Marvin said.
