ewly crowned Miss Bahamas Teen Kayla Culmer hopes to encourage other youngsters to embrace agriculture and farming as a means to not only improve the country but also help with the mental stress of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kayla, who was the first runner-up in last year’s Miss Bahamas Teenager pageant, was given her new title Miss Bahamas Teen at a special private ceremony held on Saturday. She is the first Miss

Bahamas Teen under the organisation’s new name change.

The 16-year-old grade 12 student at St Anne’s High School told Tribune Weekend that despite the unique circumstances which forced the organisation to not have a traditional pageant she is excited about the year ahead.

“My platform this year is agriculture and selfsustainability,” she said.

“My grandparents have a farm on Long Island and that is how I got interested in farming. With everything that is happening now, it is important that we look at how we can make things more sustainable and so I will be encouraging persons to plant their own gardens. You can plant one in your backyard and even if you don’t have a backyard and live in a small apartment you can still have potted gardens.”

She added that gardening is also a great way to help with social development.

It can be a great hobby, and a great way to pass the time - particularly when the country remains in partial lockdown.

Growing up, her favorite crop was the peppers that her grandmother grew.

“My grandmother used to make her own pepper sauce and so my family loves anything hot. I loved seeing all the different types of peppers and all the various colors.”

Kayla says that the past few months have been difficult for young persons as they deal with the restrictions and challenges from COVID-19.

“I am a very social person and so the way that I navigated through all of this was to utilise technology so that even though my friends and I were forced to stay indoors we were still connected.”

COVID-19 also denied her a special trip to Las Vegas this year.

When Kayla competed in the Miss Bahamas Teenager pageant, she placed first runner-up which earned her the title of Miss Bahamas Regency last year.

She was supposed to have represented The Bahamas at the Regency International Pageant in Las Vegas, Nevada, this summer which obviously had to be cancelled.

During last year’s reign, she chose “Making Spanish Aware to Monolingual People Around the World” as the theme for her platform.

She used her platform to encourage Bahamians to learn Spanish.

At time, she explained: “Knowing a second language makes your résumé stand out and can boost you to the top of the interview list with potential employers. Speaking another language lets you interact with different people and understand the distinctions of another culture. This means you might have more opportunities to make friends, explore different hobbies and better understand your favourite foreign music, film and literature,” she said.

“Even if you don’t travel abroad, becoming bilingual can help you see the world in a different way and understand yourself better,” she said.

Kayla feels that she was able to encourage persons to learn Spanish and to see the value of taking on a foreign language during her reign.

“I am a very social person and so the way that I navigated through all of this was to utilise technology so that even though my friends and I were forced to stay indoors we were still connected.”

Another highlight was her work as a volunteer in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.

“I was able to use my title to take a hands-on approach to volunteering,” she explained.

“I worked with the Red Cross and answered calls from persons who were trying to locate missing family members. I am really happy that I was able to assist the hurricane victims, it was definitely one of the most memorable moments of my reign last year,” she said.

Kayla is also scheduled to have two international pageants next year if travel health restrictions allow.

First, she would still represent the Bahamas at a rescheduled Regency International Pageant in Las

Vegas and she is also eligible to compete in the Miss Teen Universe pageant scheduled to take place in Dubai.

“I am very excited about being able to compete in both of the pageants,” she said.

Kayla decided to become involved in pageants after being invited to attend a beauty pageant with her mother.

“My mom is an event designer and she was involved with the design of the Miss Bahamas Teenager pageant. I got to attend the show and I was so excited with the evening gown competition and what the girls were doing on stage, I had never seen anything like it before .”

Kayla would eventually like to become an interior designer and model.

Kayla’s daily scripture she lives by is “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you Matthew 7:12”. She feels if you follow this simple gesture it will take you a long way in life.

• The Miss Bahamas Teen pageant will resume its annual pageant season in early 2021 with the sixth edition of the Miss Bahamas Teen pageant in late summer 2021. Organisers would like to encourage all interested teenagers to sign up by logging onto the website www.missbahamasteen. org to submit your forms now as the recruitment drive will begin in the first quarter of 2021.

ow more than ever, the host of a local culinary television series believes people need a break from the world around us.

Sasha Lightbourne, the host and executive producer of HappyFoods242, said: “Everywhere you turn, especially on mainstream television, you see and hear about COVID-19. This show will be an outlet for many. A break from the news. A break from the hopelessness and despair. A breath of fresh air for many. COVID has impacted us all in one way or another and I hope now more than ever that HappyFoods242 provides some happiness, joy, laughter for those who need it the most.

“Our clients who will be featured as well - it has been rough in the restaurant and food business. For them, this will be more than just a marketing tool. It will hopefully help many of them get back on their feet. There have been so many lockdowns and even without the lockdowns, the restrictions have been taxing on the industry so hopefully this show will breathe life back into their businesses.”

The 13th season of the show returns to air tomorrow at 7pm on channel212 - and aims to continue to give viewers insight into top Bahamian restaurants.

Liberate through “Libra-ation”

It is a virtual musical experience with an aim of raising awareness of mental health.

The event will feature musical performances Judah Tha Lion, Bahamian Tre, as well as Taniquia on Sunday at 7pm. Local psychologists Wayne and Harrison Thompson will make an appearance.

The event has a two-fold purpose, and a food drive is being hosted as part of the event. Food can be dropped at Pilgrim Baptist Church as well as the Six N Four Restaurant.

“Mental health has been an area that I’ve been passionate about for four years now. I was sitting on my couch and the word Libra-ation just fell off my tongue. I’ve always wanted to have something where I can enlighten people about mental health also to give back to the community and somehow everything just aligned. I reached out to some close friends and they all were on board. The idea was just to record a few videos in my living room but I allowed the spirit to guide me and the event just grew bigger

“I pride myself on being organised and that quality has definitely stood out for me during this pandemic.

This particular season - at least 70 per cent of the shows were shot prior to coronavirus impacting The Bahamas in March. So we did everything between February and early March. So as season 12 was playing on television, we were shooting the next season, and that’s how we have operated for a while. So once this season 13 starts playing on television in October, we will begin shooting season 14 which will debut in February 2021. We are ahead of the game,” said Sasha.

She said while the virus did not impact the majority of the show in the early shooting, viewers will notice there are a few episodes where they will see some social distancing and mask wearing.

“I want to stress that because I do not want people to think the team disobeyed the law. The majority of these shows that will air were shot in February and early March, that’s very important to state. The first episode will feature Mexicaba. You have to watch the episode, which is co-hosted by a very dear friend of mine. It is also one of the reasons why it is so special but it’s also the first show of its kind where we have had a great fusion between Mexican food and Bahamian food. This is cliche - but it’s going to be a great episode,” said Sasha.

Understanding how much God loved me and how much I should genuinely love myself catapulted me to where I am today. The words that we use every day affects us mentally so I became very careful with what I said to myself and I just want to share that love with everyone,” she said.

Taniquia said mental health is a matter of extreme importance and she knows those struggling can certainly benefit from the event.

Persons should tune into Libra-ation because mental health is something that should be taken seriously. People are harming themselves and other persons simply because they don’t know who they

are and what they’re capable of. We’re all children of a king.”

There will be much more events like this to this to come for Coco Plums Productions and Libra-ation.

“I have so much energy and love to offer,” she said.

“I hope that this event can, if not only open a window to unlock someone’s mind where a sprout of healing can be developed. Whether it be young or old I pray that they are inspired and will decide to live a life of self-acceptance, awareness, peace and love.

Taniquia is an all-round artist/entertainer. Though entrepreneurship is her first title she also sings, acts, hosts, paints, and “will cook you an extraordinary meal just cause.”

“As I got to know myself more, I realized that it was my purpose to share my gifts with the world.

Travelling the world is something that I enjoy but the cherry on top is visiting my islands of The Bahamas.

Being a very shy child with many restrictions it was difficult to express myself as a creative. Thankfully I was blessed with the greatest art teachers that invested and believed in me. I was introduced to acting and it changed my life. Musicals and live band performances have always been the sugar to my tea.

Prior to that I’m always learning something new or doing something fun. Spending time with myself and creating beautiful memories with my nieces and nephews is what I cherish the most,” she said.

Dinosaurs and detectives bring the fun

And what a fun ride it turned out to be.

Enola Holmes lives a charmed existence with her eccentric mother brilliantly cast by the amazing Helena Bonham Carter in the English countryside- until she wakes up and finds her mother missing.

Cast: Millie Bobby Brown Henry Cavill Sam Clafin Louis Patridge Helena Bonham Carter Enola Holmes is a story about family bonds, wrapped in a tale of mystery and intrigue and the journey to discovering who you are meant to be.

Fortunately for Enola, she has a brother who just happens to be a famous detective - Sherlock (yes, that Sherlock) to help locate her.

Unfortunately, she also has another elder brother, Mycroft, who seems more concerned about sending his wayward sister to a strict finishing school than locating his mother.

Frustrated by the ambivalence of her brothers, Enola (whose name is alone spelled backwards) steals away to London to solve the case on her own.

When she meets runaway Viscount Tewksbury Marquess of Basilwether, she stumbles on an additional mystery along the way.

It’s a cute tale and one perfect for a family movie night.

My ten-year-old son saw the trailer and promptly decided that without the bells and whistles of a super hero tale he wasn’t interested. What helped convince him was when he found out that Henry Cavill. (Aka Superman) plays Sherlock in the movie.

Ten minutes into it, he put down his Nintendo and curled up next to me and happily devoured the movie.

The mystery is just enough to not go over the kids’ heads but still keep the adults entertained till the final reveal.

Enola Holmes, like several other recent Netflix releases in the past few weeks, drew its own criticism. This time, it was the estate of Sherlock Holmes creator Arthur Conan Doyle who sued the streaming site for violating copyright on ten Sherlock Holmes stories. They were particularly peeved about several short scenes where Sherlock seems to have shown emotion.

Personally, I think it’s a lot of noise over not a big deal. The “emotion” scenes are just a few seconds of blink and you miss them.

While Henry Cavill does a great job at playing Sherlock, it is Millie Bobby Brown who carries the movie and brings it to life. Her Enola will have you laughing crying and rooting for her all the way.

The dinosaurs are back creating havoc in this latest installment in the Jurassic Park franchise.

This time, a group of six lucky teenagers are selected to visit the new Camp Cretaceous at the Jurassic Park theme Park on Isla Nublar. The story coincides with the events which took place in the film Jurassic World, where scientist Dr Henry Wu is creating a super powerful modified dinosaur, the Indominus Rex.

It’s a group of kids with seemingly nothing in common. But this is of course Jurassic Park so it’s only moments after the first episode’s opening credits that things start going seriously downhill. And when they are left stranded in the park, they have to band together to stay alive drawing on each of their individual strengths.

Camp Cretaceous is perfect bingewatching material.

Each episode ends on a Dino-tastic cliff hanger, that will leave you on the edge of your seat and have you yelling at the TV that yes you are still watching.

It’s the perfect series for long-term fans of the franchise to enjoy another point of view of the events of Jurassic World and a great way to introduce it to a new generation of dinosaur fans.

Bringing the outdoors into the home or office

et us take it inside this week.

Indoor plants create a different set of circumstances for plant care that can be challenging at times.

Conditions that can lead to success or failure when keeping plants inside of the home or office differ from growing outdoors.

Sunlight is the engine that drives plants to photosynthesize and produce energy to put into growth. So, what happens when there is no natural light? First, plant growth slows down quite a lot. Secondly, because of slower growth rates, plants will use a lot less water and require less nutrients. Plant selection for an indoor space can involve quite a lot of trial and error.

Overwatering becomes an issue for many, with the slower growth of the plant, they do not use the available water nearly as quickly.

Overwatering can deprive the planting media (potting soil et al) of airspace.

A healthy root system for most plants requires some airspace in the media. Having said all of that, overwatering is about the only way that we kill plants in the nursery!

Most plants when placed indoors or in a very low light situation are much more susceptible to root rot caused by a saturated planting media.

To avoid this, allow indoor plants to dry somewhat between watering. Some folks like to use a moisture meter, but it is also simple enough to stick a finger a couple of inches into the planting media to gauge whether they need watering or not.

If the media is cool and damp, then most likely the plant is just fine and can go another few days without another watering. If the media is dry without the coolness to the touch, then it likely needs water.

Most of us are familiar with the Spathiphyllum, or Peace Lily as it is commonly called. This plant is what can be referred to as an indicator plant. It will be the first to droop, or wilt, or show signs of underwatering. Spathiphyllum will indicate that it is dry, and that signals the time to check all other plants in the indoor space for water as well. On the other end of the watering spectrum is the Sansevieria, or Snake plant (Sansevieria has recently been reclassified into the Dracaena genus by the nomenclature powers that be, for reasons that nobody outside of that small group seems sure of). The Snake plant thrives with dry media. A few times being over-watered can cause leaf spot (fungus) quite easily.

Many other plants that do well indoors (Dieffenbachia, Dracaenas, Philodendrons, etc) tend to sit somewhere in the middle on their watering needs. There is no one formula to give when folks ask “how often should I water it”. That really is a difficult question to answer. Depending upon the amount of natural light available and temperature, or maybe an air conditioning vent blowing on a plant, or it being near a doorway or window, will all contribute to water use, and whether it dries quickly or slowly.

Trial and error in each situation is really the only way to figure it out. If a plant gets dry, crispy brown tips, typically this signals that it is not getting enough water. If a plant gets soft, mushy brown tips or stems, typically this signals that it is getting too much water.

Other than that, pot size will affect things (too big, too small), as will the quality of the potting media. It does become more important to use the correct media for the plant selected when it is being used indoors. It is best to invest a few more dollars into a highquality potting mix when using plants inside the home or office.

Too much moisture holding capacity and there can be issues, too porous, more issues. If it is all just right, then growing a beautiful plant indoors is easy, if it isn’t easy, then something should be changed, and usually it will have something to do with the amount of sunlight available, airflow in the space, drainage and moisture holding capacity in the potting mix.

By having plants inside the home or office can help filter the air a little, they will create a little bit of oxygen, but the greatest benefit is aesthetic. It is wonderful to walk into an indoor space that has plants in it, it can help elevate people’s moods, and all in all it is a benefit to people using the space.

So, I encourage you to bring some of the outdoors to the inside space of your office or home, and do not be afraid to experiment with placement, but do consider natural light, airflow, and watering. Good luck, and as always, happy gardening!

Sir Christopher Ondaatje further explores the life of the flamboyant American film director, screenwriter, actor, and visual artist who wrote the screenplays for some of the greatest Hollywood film classics between 1941 and 1985.

“I miss the order that old Hollywood had. It was much easier then to get a picture made than it is today. It’s become a cliché that the studio people were picture makers then, but there’s a large element of truth in it. They were people who wanted to make pictures, and they knew how to make them.

They weren’t accountants and bookkeepers, tax consultants and efficiency experts who don’t know how to make pictures, or wheeler-dealers; that element just seems to have taken over today – promoters who just want to get part of the action rather than people who want to make good movies.”

John Huston The film, of the 1949 WR Burnett novel, achieved an almost documentary style, and film critic Andrew Sarris considered it to be Huston’s best.

Many will disagree but it is impossible to ignore that his artistic background painstakingly created a composite film noir and heist masterpiece. It starred Sterling Hayden and Sam Jaffe, and gave a young Marilyn Monroe her first serious role. Monroe said that Huston was the first genius she had ever met.

JOHN Huston Falcon. But Warner Bros persisted with him. His next picture, which he wrote and directed, was The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Again he chose Humphrey Bogart as his lead actor, and gave a supporting role to his father Walter Huston.

Huston wanted to make the film on location in Mexico – a radically dangerous move – particularly with Huston’s wild reputation. In addition, studio boss Jack L Warner detested the film and its subject about three drifters who teamed together to prospect for gold. Nevertheless they finally agreed to Huston’s demands and the film was made. Whatever distrust Warners had about the film was soon dislodged as the film achieved widespread public and critical acclaim. Hollywood critic James Agee called it “one of the most beautiful and visually alive movies I have ever seen”, and Time magazine said that it was the best thing Hollywood had done since it had introduced talking pictures.

Huston won Oscars for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay; and his father won Best Supporting Actor.

The film won several other international awards. More importantly it cemented John Huston’s position as one of Hollywood’s most talented movie directors. He was given a free hand with the choice of his next film Key Largo (1948) which again starred Humphrey Bogart, his new wife Lauren Bacall, Claire Trevor, Edward G. Robinson, and Lionel Barrymore.

The film was a faithful adaptation of the stage play by Maxwell Anderson and critics panned it for being overly stage-bound. Good directing and acting performances saved the film.

Claire Trevor, who played the part of an alcoholic gangster’s moll, won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

However, the ever sensitive Huston was annoyed that Warners had cut several scenes from the film’s final release without his permission, and he did not renegotiate his contract with the studio.

The film succeeded at the box office, and Huston was again nominated for an Oscar for Best Screenplay and Best Director. He did not win in Hollywood but he was recognised by winning the Screen Directors Guild Award. The film became a model for many similar movies by other filmmakers.

Red Badge of Courage (1951) was inspired by Stephen Crane’s classic American Civil War novel of the same name. Huston chose World War II hero Audie Murphy to play the young Union soldier who deserts his company out of fear, but returns to fight alongside it. MGM produced the film but were concerned that it was too anti-war for the post World War II period. They were correct and the movie did poorly at the box office, but, undeterred, Huston moved on to his next romance/ adventure film that became one of the most popular movies ever made: The African Queen (1951). The film, based on CS Forester’s popular novel, again starred Humphrey Bogart but this time together with Katherine Hepburn. Sam Spiegel, the film’s producer, convinced Huston to change the ending to allow

the protagonists to survive instead of dying. He agreed and it became one of his most successful films financially and one of his finest works. Huston was nominated for two Academy Awards – Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. He won neither, but Humphrey Bogart won his only Oscar for Best Actor for his role as the scurrilous riverboat captain Charlie Allnut.

Katherine Hepburn wrote about her experiences in her memoir The Making of the African Queen: Or How I Went to Africa with Bogart, Bacall and Huston and almost lost my mind. Clint Eastwood then directed and starred in Peter Viertel’s novel White Hunter, Black Heart – a fictional version of the making of the film – almost as dramatic as the film itself.

When you finish and the picture is over, there’s an understanding, a realisation, that we’ll never be assembled this way again. That these relationships are severed forever and ever.

And each of these films is a little life.

John Huston Huston first visited Ireland in 1951 when he stayed as a guest of the Guinness family in County Wicklow.

He moved to Ireland permanently in 1952, disgusted with the “witch-hunt” created by the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) which affected many of his friends in the movie industry accused of Communist affiliations. He continued to write and direct films: Moulin Rouge (1952), Beat The Devil (1953), and Moby Dick (1956). He had wanted his father to play the role of Captain Ahab in Moby Dick, and only picked Gregory Peck after his father died in 1950. It took three years to make and was shot in Ireland where Huston was living. The fishing village of New Bedford, Massachussets was recreated along the Irish coastline. But the film failed at the box office.

It wasn’t until The Misfits was made in 1961 that Huston received more critical acclaim. The five films preceding it were failures. There was an atmosphere of doom in The Misfits which did not go unnoticed. Clark Gable died of a heart attack a few weeks after filming was completed, and Marilyn Monroe, who died a year later, never made another film. She died a year later, co-stars Montgomery Clift and Thelma Ritter died over the next decade.

All his films were insightful about human nature – often about failed quests. He avoided Hollywood’s penchant for happy endings. All of Huston’s films are adaptations. Literature offered him a road map for exploring the human condition. He was however the least consistent of filmmakers. Many of his films did poorly, but he was never afraid of criticism. He had a fascination with underdogs and losers.

A heavy smoker, Huston was diagnosed with emphysema in 1978.

He nevertheless continued to work with oxygen equipment support. He died on 28 August 1987 in his rented home in Middletown, Rhode Island, from pneumonia as a complication of his lung disease, just three weeks after his eighty-first birthday. He is interred in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery together with his mother.

T

hroughout the history of The Bahamas, there was a need to protect New providence from invasion, by such enemies as Spain, France and, starting in 1776, the United States of America, so forts

were built.

The first record of a fort was in 1672, when Governor John Wentworth asked for a king’s flag for the new fort. In 1695, the settlement on New Providence was given the name Charles Town and in 1697 Fort Nassau, armed with 22 cannons, was built.

When the colony was taken over by the king, Woodes Rogers was sent here, to put an end to piracy. Many pirates accepted King’s Pardon, others fled and, on December 18, 1718, nine unrepentant pirates were hanged at Fort Nassau.

In 1741, because England and Spain were involved in ‘The War of Jenkins Ear’, the British government, realising that New Providence was inadequately defended, sent Capt Peter Henry Bruce to build a new fort, which became Fort Montagu. Bruce also restored Fort Nassau, which he found in terrible shape.

By 1769, Fort Nassau was, again, in a terrible state of neglect and, although it continued to be garrisoned as late as 1790.

In 1787, John Murray, the 4th Earl of Dunmore (who had, previously, been a Governor of New York and the last Governor of Virginia) was appointed Governor of the Bahamas (a post he held until 1796) and arrived in Nassau with a vision of building a whole defensive network, strong enough to repel any attacker.

By this time, Fort Nassau had become strategically obsolete, so it was demolished in 1837.

Ultimately, the land, where Fort Nassau once stood, became the site of the British Colonial Hotel.

Dunmore replaced Fort Nassau with a powerful new fort, atop the hill to the west of the town saw that New Providence was in desperate need of a system of forts and fortifications that covered all approaches to the island and soon set about building a network of forts and fortifications to defend the island so well that no enemy would ever be able to overcome them.

He chose a site, atop the hill to the west of the town, where he built the biggest fort in The Bahamas, atop the hill to the west of the town and overlooking the entrance to the harbour, cleverly choosing to name it Fort Charlotte, after the wife of King George III, Sophia Charlotte (1744–1818).

The main part of Fort Charlotte was completed in 1789 and, in Dunmore’ words, “There are two magazines that contain above a thousand barrels of powder . . . two others, cut out of the solid rock, under the works, perfectly proof against shells and . . . a well that will amply the garrison with water . . . other part of the work is totally cut out of the

Whereas most forts are built from the ground up, Fort Charlotte almost unique. It was carved into the rock, to give extra protection from enemy guns. Behind the guardroom is the oven, used for heating cannon balls. When fired at wooden ships, the red-hot balls are devastating. They gave birth to the expression ‘hot shot’.

But my favourite feature is the spiral staircase into a tunnel, under the dry moat, which leads to an underground chamber, where defenders could see the entrance to the dry moat and fire at an approaching enemy, hardly risking their own safety. I don’t know whether access to this is still allowed.

If you visit Fort Charlotte, bear in mind that, in fact, you see not one, but three, forts. The eastern (original) portion is Fort Charlotte, the middle portion is Fort Stanley (named after another of Dunmore’s titles, and the western portion is Fort d’Arcy. Lieutenant d’Arcy had come from England, in 1791, to investigate the Governor’s spending and sent a disparaging report back to

London, but the fort had already been named after him.

In 1794, Dunmore informed the Secretary of State (London) that the Water Battery, on the shore below Fort Charlotte (the cannons one sees from one’s car, today, when driving by), had been erected . . . a battery on Hog Island, to prevent the enemy from landing on that island. The Governor went on to write about “. . . a battery upon a hill, on this island, to the eastward of Government House, mounting two 12-pounders and one Howitzer, which not only covers the battery in Hog Island, but all the town and road to the eastward . . .” Obviously, he was referring to what became Fort Fincastle, which he named after one of his several titles. It commands the highest point in the City of Nassau.

By this time, the western entrance to the harbour was well protected, so Dunmore turned his attention to a battery on Potters Cay (easily visible from the bridge from Paradise Island) and the other on Winton Highway, very near the eastern end of New Providence. When last I went there, access to Fort Winton was impossible. It was overgrown by ‘jungle’.

Between these two batteries stands Fort Montagu, the only one that ever defended the island.

Three times did it face an enemy and three times did it lose - 1776, 1782 and 1783.

Today’s Bahamians should be grateful to Dunmore, who reported to London “I thought it proper to reserve about one hundred acres off land, round the Fort, to prevent houses being built near it, for exercising the troops, and for supplying them with all sorts of vegetables, which is absolutely necessary, for the preservation of their health . . . more especially as they have no fresh provisions, owing to its high price . . .” This acreage is still without buildings and, many years later, Governor Sir Bede Clifford created Clifford Park, a huge sports field.

History seems to have proven Dunmore right.

No enemy has invaded this island, since 1783.

Sweet tooth for grammy’s ice cream

RMANRRAH Ford still remembers the taste of his grandmother’s ice cream that they made together when he was child. It was a taste he describes too “extraordinary” to forget. It is the reason his grandmother’s specialty ice cream is the featured product at a newly opened ice cream parlor and factory in The Grove, Nassau.

“My grandmother would make special desserts every weekend. Most weekends it would be cake or fudge, but on those special occasions, especially when Soursop was in season, she would make the most extraordinary ice creams or ices you ever tasted. And those were usually the weekend I have kitchen duties,” he told Tribune Weekend.

Armanraah finds himself today still with kitchen duties. He is the proprietor of Grammy’s Sweet and churns ice cream day in and day out from its kitchen.

Grammy’s Sweets’ first official day of opening was September 12. The opening of the parlor was initially scheduled for the beginning of the year. However, the pandemic hit in The Bahamas before the Armanraah got the venture off the ground.

With his background and experience, was able to pivot and readjust his business plans during the pandemic.

Armanrrah has managed companies in the Bahamas and throughout the Caribbean (Puerto Rico, Bermuda, The Turks & Caicos Islands). He also spent the past five years working in a leadership role in the frozen dessert industry.

“Having worked in the frozen dessert industry for the past few years, there were no ice cream products offered as good, or parlor outlet as welcoming, as I felt it should be.

“As mentioned, my ‘grammy’ made an ice cream product in her kitchen that was far

superior to the products offered on the island, and I truly believed the island needed a welcoming destination to come and experience Grammy’s superior ice creams and island ices, as well as my Grammy’s down-home style welcoming atmosphere,” she said.

Standing on the foundation of his prior work experiences, Aramanraah mobilized plans for the parlor’s opening. But had to make major readjustment as opening a business during pandemic requires meeting various standards “Launching during the pandemic obviously slowed the process dramatically. Grammy’s Sweets currently offers an assortment of 20 premium ice creams and 16 island ices (Sorbet).

“In our ice cream we have Classic Vanilla, extreme chocolate, very strawberry, butter pecans and strawberry cheese cake; along with island favorites, rummy rum raisin, Inagua salted caramel, red and white coconut cake, and many more.

And in the not too distant future Armanraah hopes to expand the business have the parlor’s ice cream experience by many.

“It is important to get Grammy’s Sweets processes right and standardized to ensure every customer is guaranteed the most delicious frozen treat and a wonderful environment to access and enjoy those treats.

“We hope with our old-fashion recipes, loyal customer following, and God’s blessing, would allow expansion into multiple locations, to allow our customer even better access to Grammy’s Sweets frozen treats and welcoming down-home style parlor ambience,” he said.

Magnificent mammals deserve better

ust the name Orca spins exciting tales in my mind, these magnificent black and white mammals of the sea with such lovely faces, who have to deal with the particularly unattractive nickname of “Killer Whale”.

Orca: the poor mammal perennially abused by heartless humans for their mindless entertainment. These magnificent creatures are torn away from their pods, dragged frequently through bloodied waters screaming for their families, they are taken captive and shipped to some revolting marine entertainment facility.

There, they are subjected to a life of derision and cruelty. They have food withheld if they do not comply, they are prodded and poked, placed in pods to sleep, and made to live in concrete tubs not deep enough, not wide enough and with no entertainment, except relentless shows for idiot spectators who really believe the Orca “kissed” his trainer. You mean the captive prisoner performed a trick that was similar to the gesture humans know as kissing, towards his jailor? Wake up world, this is a marine mammal why in a million years would it “kiss” anybody?

These tragic animals have had a lot of coverage over the years because a few of them have killed their trainers. Do you wonder why? You try spending the rest of your life in a concrete bowl, alone and being made to do ridiculous antics to please and delight people who just don’t get it.

I actually think it is amazing that they have not all snapped and that many more humans have not ended up dragged to the bottom of the pool.

It is not natural, leave them alone folks, watch them on video in their natural habitat, see the magnificence of them swimming free, free to turn left or right, free to dive or leap, free to be with their pods and family.

A couple of days ago there were photos on Bahamian social media that made my heart sigh. Orcas

spotted swimming along contentedly between Nassau and Great Harbour Cay. What an unbelievable treat for those lucky boaters who took the pictures. I grew up in the Berry Islands and though we saw an occasional whale (once we had identified that it wasn’t an American submarine), we never saw an Orca.

The Orca is actually the largest of the dolphin family and is known to be a very powerful predator. These beautiful creatures are very smart and social, and they make a wide variety of communicative sounds, and each pod has their own “language” to communicate with its pod, or family, so distinctive are these sounds that they will recognize a pod family member even at a distance.

How unusual that these splendid fellows were swimming in our waters, how wonderful that there were no idiots standing by with a gun to see if they could kill them and turn them into some unbearable trophy to boast about to an equally non-conservational minded mate. After some research I have found that, though not frequent, orca sightings in The Bahamas are not surprising. I spent a fascinating time

on Google watching all the various videos uploaded by people. What is of enormous interest to me, being a Berry Island Girl, is that many sightings are not far from the Berries.

That is extremely deep water, but I do not know if that might entice the orcas to pass by.

One clip shows a pod of at least four enormous orcas swimming around a small boat back in 2001.

The girls on board with their Dad were way cooler than I would have been when one of those immense mammals swam under the boat.

Apparently they were feeding and the water over an area of about an acre was full of blood. As one of the young ladies says on the video, “don’t fall in”.

They are also seen in Abaco yearly in late spring or early summer. They say that one group has returned to Abaco every year over a period of 15 years. They hang around and feed

off the prolific marine life and move on after a day or too.

There are other magnificent clips taken under water, clear shots of these beautiful creatures, with their enormous dorsal fins. There is something quite magical about an Orca sighting, their distinctive black and white markings and their enormous size (males can grow to thirty feet in length, the ladies a little smaller).

The incredible grace with which they move their enormous bodies, graceful as a marine ballet dancer.

A point to remember is that when these immoral marine shows make the Orca slide up on a ramp: the mere weight of their own bodies can damage the organs inside their bodies…they were created to swim in the sea through our islands, giving us a thrill when we catch a glimpse of them, and then they go on their way.
