tefan Davis aka Stefan Legend the “Airbrush Junkie” has made art more than a passion, more than a source of income, more than a past time. He has made art a way of life and his zeal has passed on to his son, Tristan.

Father and son fulfil their love for art at Stefan’s sanctuary - Airbrush Junkies at the Mall at Marathon. He has one of the longest standing operations in the mall, having opened its doors 26 years ago.

Airbrush art is constantly evolving and flowing with the trends of young people who find their individuality by expressing themselves through airbrush fashion. When Tribune Weekend visited the store, Stephan was busy transforming a once plain pair of white tennis shoes. He has a table full of shoes to complete in time for the weekend and anxious trendsetting clients.

Life for Stephan is art, and his expression is not limited to air brushing.

He decided to rekindle his skills in canvas and held his first art exhibition in a long time at the Central Bank of The Bahamas this past April.

Another exhibition is planned for December.

Far from traditional in nature, Stephan is leaning towards modern art. Outside his store hangs canvas paintings of the legendary rappers Biggie Smalls and Tupac wearing crowns. The stark black and white images make a statement and are brought to life with glitter. He plans to work on “the kings” including Michael Jackson and Bob Marley in his next pieces, before he begins to paint “the queens” of entertainment.

Stefan remains in touch with young people through his field of work and in this way, he came to realize how many talented young people are out there without outlets of expression.

For this reason, he plans to work on a project which will allow for young people to express themselves through art that could be visible such as an art walk, graffiti wall, or creative space.

As that vision begins to take shape, Stefan remains committed to his craft; daily turning up to his studio with new ideas to turn everyday items into fashionable, colourful, signature pieces.

Sunday lunch. Sunday is a family day and a great time for extended family to get together. Somehow the culture of eating together as a family every Sunday is being lost Q. Beach or sofa?

Beach. Out on the beach there is a lot more fresh air.

The sea and other elements are at work together. Walking on the sand relieves stress.

The beach is a big thrust in the inspiration for my art pieces and my music. Nature keeps you in tune.

Q. Rum, wine, cocktail or Kalik?

I like wine - good for deep conversations and good for the blood!

Q. What is the one thing you can’t live without?

My freedom. Freedom of speech,freedom to be myself. A lot of people are locked into things they don’t like and stay there. In these times you have to free yourself up from the things that may be holding down body, mind and soul.

Q. Weekend away, where would you go and why?

I live where you vacation. Because I live in the Exumas, I often find a deserted cay on a weekend and do some drumming or painting. So when I really want to get away, I’m thinking of Africa... some place like Senegal.

The Andros boy who chased his dreams

isit any Family Island settlement on a cool weekday afternoon or a bright Saturday morning and expect to find little boys with bare feet running along the road, beaches or rocky bays. It’s as if abandoning shoes and connecting with the earth, picking up a few bumps and bruises along the way, is a right of passage for a Bahamian island boy.

Fishing, diving, creating makeshift toys

with anything to hand are just some of the elements that shape the childhood of so many in this country.

Those boys may have great aspirations for their future, but right now their only aim is to make each day more fun than the next. So, when a child of this unassuming background rises to the upper echelons of civil service in his country, he makes it a point to share his story in order to inspire these barefoot boys to reach for the stars.

Dr. Leon Higgs did just that. This week he launched his

autobiography “Barefoot to Boardroom”. His narrative tells the story of an island boy’s rise from humble beginnings to a life which brought a plethora of achievements, including serving as President of the College of The Bahamas and the current Secretary General of The Bahamas National Commission for UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation).

“I am an Andros boy from a big family and a small settlement,” said Dr. Higgs, referring to his upbringing in Kemp’s Bay, South Andros.

In the 1950s the road to Kemp’s Bay was a dusty, country route that followed the contour of the shoreline.

“It was quiet and long, like many of the days for the people in the settlements it served,” he recalled.

The book recounts: “Outsiders used the road for trade - fishing, farming, lumber. Many came by boat. As a boy, Leon looked up that road just as he looked out to the sea, knowing that beyond where either could carry him, beyond Nassau, hub of the nation, there was a world that would give him

gifts and skills that he wanted and needed later on in life.”

It was a highly emotional farewell when the young Leon left Kemp’s Bay to pursue higher education in Alabama, USA. His mother and grandmother did not even have the strength to accompany him to the airport.

They had been crying all morning and although they were proud of him, the thought of him being so far away from home and so out of touch was more than they could bear.

“I have to confess that when I was on the trip from Miami to Alabama, (that’s when reality set in) and I literally cried all the way to Alabama; it was my first time going off on my own and I felt lonely,” he said.

“I didn’t quite know where I was going or what to expect, but I was full of optimism and I was so excited. Once i arrived at the campus, adjusting wasn’t difficult for me at all.”

Barefoot to Boardroom reads: “Leon could have been a fisherman like his father, or he might have become a minister as some members of his church had wished for him. In a literal sense, he chose a path quite different from any of these; but in a symbolic sense, he has been a fisher of men and opportunity, has cultivated great ideas in business and educational development, and has ministered to many communities - religious, social, educational and economic.”

The book starts out with a look at Dr. Higgs’ rural foundation and the important influences that first shaped his life in Andros. From a childhood crush to school days and after-school shenanigans, he delves into what sounds like some of the best days of his life. The “back breaking” farm work and responsibility of sometimes preparing family meals even as a young boy are juxtaposed with the pigeon shooting and fun beaching days that coloured his childhood.

He cannot clearly remember the first time he ever purchased his own suit, but he does recall wearing a grey pinstriped suit while working at a hotel on Paradise Island. Smartly dressed he remembers he felt he was coming into his own. He was proud of himself and felt the confidence to push himself even further.

“The night I wore that suit still lingers on to this day, and I talk about that night in the book,” he said.

Filled with old and new family photos, the book tells of Dr. Higgs’ ascent, from his first glimpse of city life, to being educated and then working in

America, to returning back to his roots and starting a family back home. His wife, Dr. Alvira Higgs and his sons Tafari, Miriosh, Levar and Marcus inspired him to write down his life’s journey.

“It was important for me to tell my story because there are many people in our country today and across the world who may have dreams, but they find all kinds of excuses for not pursuing or accomplishing those dreams,” Dr. Higgs said.

“I hope to encourage young and old people to pursue their dreams at any age. If you do not become faint of heart and give up, in most cases, you would accomplish those dreams.”

The story of his life could give hope to others, he added, and “if they see someone who is achieving their goals who came from their same kind of background, it would give them hope and encourage them to pursue their own”.

“Maybe they could look at themselves and their own circumstances differently.”

He is called on by many and his duties to country are too many to mention, but this barefoot Andros boy remains humble through it all. As an avid Seventh Day Adventist, he

recluses on Sabbath and continues to find inspiration to serve his life purpose and fulfil his path as a veteran educator.

Under his leadership at the College of the Bahamas, now the University of The Bahamas, Dr. Higgs accomplished much including spearheading a fiveyear strategic plan for COB; building a $4.5 million Student Services Centre; restructuring the college academic areas - critical foundation steps towards the current university; signing the first Industrial Agreement with the Union of Tertiary Educators of The Bahamas (UTEB) and completing the raising of $5 million for the Lyford Cay Scholarship Fund.

Regionally, he currently lends expertise as a member of the Caribbean Knowledge and Learning Network Board and served as a member of a six person management team for Virtual University for Small States of The Commonwealth for four years.

An accomplished civil servant, Dr. Higgs has served as Director of Higher Education and Lifelong Learning for the Ministry of Education, Director of Training for the Ministry of Labor, Immigration and Training, and Assistant General Manager of the Water and Sewerage Corporation.

Prior to returning to the Bahamas to help revolutionise tertiary education, Dr. Higgs served as Executive Vice President of San Bernadino Valley College in California as well as serving in influential posts at Riverside Community College and Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama.

Barefoot to Boardroom was officially launched last night at the Performing Arts Centre, University of The Bahamas with a host of guests including family, friends and professional colleagues from the various fields he touched.

Accolades came from the likes of Dr. Dave Richardson, retired Academic Vice President of Salt Lake Community College, who listed some of Dr. Higgs’ accomplishments including: “Addressing the workforce needs of his native land; addressing the limited resources for accomplishing the enormous tasks destined by the education and government agencies he served for for many years; addressing ways to increase the financial posture of The Bahamas; helping add value to the learning prescriptions of students; helping US and Bahamian students reach their academic potential; and designing and implementing fair and equitable work environments within his associated organisations.”

The future for education in The Bahamas is bright, according to Dr. Higgs’ perspective.

“Many of the older people who were stuck in their ways are now moving off the scene and younger, more progressive people are taking over and they will make a difference. If we do not do something about our education system, we won’t be able to compete with the rest of the world. Young people won’t let that happen. So, we have a bright future ahead of us.”

Lawanna McCoy, President of Daughter of Zion Junior Academy in Delray Beach, Florida, says she is proud to call Dr. Higgs a mentor and colleague.

“He is a man whom I respect and appreciate even more today. How Dr. Higgs made me feel, how he treated me and supported me will be the pattern I emulate in my profession for the remainder of my life.”

Lifting the veil on ancient China

niversity of The Bahamas students aren’t waiting until they are able to travel the world to discover new cultures; they are bringing the world home in an effort to increase Bahamians’ appreciation for and understanding of other cultures.

UB students will welcome 20 artists from Beijing this weekend for a one night performance by some of the most talented students of Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU). The Art Troupe is set to perform “The Silk Road”, a 70-minute act which will bring the audience an exciting

experience of ancient and modern Chinese culture and art.

The BLCU Art Troupe tours the world “to help the people of other countries appreciate authentic Chinese performing art”. This performance tour is focused on the theme of “Ancient Chinese Silk Road” and “Ancient Chinese Civilization”.

The choice of music, effect of the background and the design of the dances are characterized by the grandiose geographic features of China’s northern region and its historical heritage.

“With a mixture of multi-ethnic musical and dance forms, we present a vivid picture of ancient Chinese northern nomadic tribes, illustrate the glorious

history of the Silk Road with epic musical forms, and stage an excellent fashion show featuring ancient and present day Chinese apparel,” said a spokesman for the group.

Since 2003, the award-winning BLCU Art Troupe has staged more than 600 performances throughout the world. The Confucius Institute facility training center and the BLCU College of Fine Art now boasts of a large group of first rate performers in China.

They will perform at the National Center for Performing Arts on Shirley Street tomorrow at 6:30pm. For compli-

t was debuts and new faces at Paris Fashion Week Wednesday as Lanvin’s new designer unveiled his first collection and Lacoste returned to the French capital.

Here are the highlights of the 2018 springsummer ready-to-wear shows.

Lanvin’s play-it-safe debut The son of famed French designer Ted Lapidus, Olivier Lapidus had a lot to prove for his debut show at Lanvin, one of Paris’ most respected, yet keenly-critiqued, fashion houses.

Understandably, the 59-year-old played it safe.

Riffing on Grecian themes, models with ribboned ponytails marched down the runway with knee-length strap boots and criss-cross belting.

In the clothes, black silken gowns rippled across the body contours — as one draped dress, sporting an asymmetrical voluminous sleeve, evoked Ancient Greece.

Elsewhere, crossover miniskirts in coral red or black read more like “Xena: Warrior Princess” than classic antiquity. They were a tad unoriginal

— as was the use of the text “LANVIN” emblazoned blurrily across myriad dresses.

Still, the collection improved toward the finale with a diaphanous black silk column dress that was set off figuratively with a 1-foot white flower resting on each shoulder like a cloud.

“This year is the beginning,” said French actor Jean Reno from the front row. “Next year, will be the Big Bang.”

Jean reno seduced by lanvin Sixty-nine year old Reno, a relative stranger to the Paris fashion industry, attended Lanvin’s Grand Palais display in his signature spectacles and a dark suit musing about the art of attraction.

“I believe I’m a little advanced in age, but I think seduction is almost the foundation of 98% of our doings,” he said, perhaps summing up the way many assume Parisians approach daily life. “(Fashion) is — how can I put this? — almost a weapon of seduction,” he added.

Lacoste returns After a 13-year run in New York, storied French clothing company Lacoste returned to Paris to celebrate 85 years since it was co-founded by tennis player Rene Lacoste in 1933.

Moving cities is no small feat.

First of all, Paris is a more expensive place to host a show, and, secondly, sports brands like Lacoste are more readily associated with New York and less so with the couturedominant French capital.

But the French brand is taking a risk and hoping to capitalize on the current Paris trend for sneakers and luxury sportswear.

And they did so seamlessly in Wednesday’s sporty-meets-luxury display that packed some clever fashion twists.

A clean white T-shirt was twinned with a floppy sleeveless navy jacket — its sharp collar and shiny buttons were a take on a man’s sportswear blazer. It was paired with heels.

Meanwhile, a classy cobalt blue shoulderless dress with no frills had a great sporty minimalism. The best moment came when a boring men’s striped sports shirt was blown up, deconstructed and twisted into a loose and feminine one-shoulder sweater.

Debuts, debuts, debuts The fashion industry is synonymous with change — with creative heads rolling regularly at the top Paris houses, and new designers — and labels — sprouting forth.

But the buds of these spring shows are particularly new with several incoming designers of established houses unveiling much-anticipated first collections.

In addition to Wednesday’s Lapidus debut at Lanvin, Serge Ruffieux will debut at Carven, Richard Rene at Guy Laroche, Clare Waight Keller at Givenchy and Natacha RamseyLevi will unveil her first collection for Chloe.

And as well as Lacoste, other houses — Altuzarra, Thom Browne and Wendy Jim — will hold collections at Paris’ ready-to-wear week for the first time ever.

Dries van noten’s foulard Superlatives are in order for Dries Van Noten.

The Belgian designer with a keen eye for color treated Wednesday’s guests to a sumptuous silken display that was pure visual pleasure.

The silk scarf, or foulard, was the muse.

Browns, purples and siennas set off touches of yellow and green in the vibrant collection of loosely fitting gowns — and a touch of menswear — that played with contrasts.

Blown up foulards were constructed as gowns, shirts and inset beautifully in dresses.

This produced the show’s best look — a one-shoulder black sweater that enveloped a shimmering bronze skirt, with two giant multicolored foulards billowing out from the waist in a kinetic explosion.

But where would the designer be without his signature flowers?

To tick that box, there was a stylish boxy menswear suit that teemed with yellow chrysanthemums.

Jealously, infidelity, rivalry - just your typical boujee family

HE COMEDIC drama, Keeping up with the Boujees, unfolded on stage at the University of the Bahamas’ Performing Arts Center this past weekend playing before an audience of more than 300 people each night.

This latest Sisbro Productions stage play written by Grand Bahama native Kerel Pinder highlighted stories of infidelity, sibling rivalry and jealousy sprinkled with a bit of political satire.

Following the characters of the Bowen family who are as ‘boujee’ (high maintenance) as they come, the action beings when the father runs for political office and his ability to keep up appearances becomes hard.

“The reason I thought Keeping up with the Boujees would be a great family sitcom or drama is because of the constant Bahamian debate of “Who is more ‘Boujee’? Is it people from Freeport or Nassau? No matter who wins the debate, I have found that both our islands are filled with individuals who are trying to keep up appearances or keep up with Joneses.

“In this play I wanted to talk about a family that appeared to have it all, but when you get to know them, you get to see the truth; and the truth is they go through the same ugly struggles as everyone else. They just look cute while doing it,” Kerel told Tribune Weekend.

Grateful for the turnout that drew so many locals in, what Kerel enjoyed for the most part, was the engagement by audience members.

“They were all into it and there for every ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’. You can tell they were really engaged and responsive.

Just from the reviews that people gave they really got into the performances and that’s what is great about having a live performance. I love the fact that

people identify with and love certain characters,” said Kerel.

The drama’s main cast included names like Kenrick Blatach as (Clarence Bowen), Shauna Joseph as (Caroline Bowen), Olivia Dorsett as (Sasha Bowen), Jillian Lightbourne as (Kacey Bowen- Banks), Alfred Anderson as (David Bowen), Quincy Grodon as (Trent Bowen), Rosetta Cartwright as (KeKe) and Trevor Trent Simmons as (Raymond Banks). Other cast members include; Reginald Simmons, Tempsett Bullard, Remardo Russell, Donovon Munroe, Ontario Richardson, Audenique Edden, Dawn Rolle, Desire Joseph, Drew Hepburn, Corey Higgs, Georgina Moss, Preston Knowles, Gabrielle McIntosh, Shayla Hepburn and Ozzy Cooper.

Speaking of an audience favourite - “Keke” played by former Miss Bahamas winner Rosetta Cartwright Kerel said Keke was a hit from the very beginning of the play’s inception.

“I always have people read over my script before putting it out because I love feedback, and from the moment readers saw the script they said people would love Keke,” said Kerel.

“Keeping Up With The Boujees is a drama, however Bahamians love comedy and they need that laughter in the system. If you are going to have a lot of drama, you need that light in there not to feel so heavy when you leave the theater. It is good to have a character who is there for good for comic relief and that is what Keke is there for. All of the snappy comebacks and physical attributes that was just so overwhelmingly annoying or ghetto, Keke was there for it. She is singing, dancing and just totally inappropriate.

By casting the former Miss Bahamas to play the part just added the icing on the cake,” said Kerel.

For the remainder of the year it is Kerel’s hope to get back to the pages and find time to write more. In 2018 her goal is to release a second book and produce a fourth stage play.

Behind the scenes with ‘The Walking Dead’

F

or seven seasons, AMC’s “The Walking Dead” has explored a world where the dead roam the earth while the living seek safety — almost more from other humans than from the zombies trying to tear into their flesh.

There are characters whose faith is tested but find their grit and fierceness. There are those who are kissups and latch themselves on to leaders, their will to survive stronger than their pride. Then there are those who seize a newfound power to terrorize and bully.

Through it all, it’s often difficult to discern the difference between who’s good and who’s evil, something that evolves and can change from moment to moment.

And now, as the show approaches its 100th episode — the kickoff to Season 8 that launches on Oct. 22 — the characters are on the verge of war, a battle pitting character Rick Grimes and his band of loyalists against Negan and the Saviors, mixed in with a few other communities whose allegiances sometimes shift without warning.

For a full day this spring, AMC invited a small group of journalists to the set to talk with the actors and crew involved in the show. Everyone took pains to avoid revealing what was in store in the next season.

The main filming location is on a sprawling lot tucked behind this small south Georgia town where most of this new world has sprouted: Raleigh Studios, a constantly evolving set on 140 acres where all sorts of imaginary communities have been created from scratch.

The Heap — an actual mound of trash filled with all sorts of debris and cars no newer than 2010 (the year the world is said to have died) — was created in just three weeks to serve as the domain for Jadis (played by Pollyanna McIntosh), who speaks in an odd clipped form of English and switches allegiances as fast as character Michonne can lop off a head with her Katana.

The Hilltop, ruled over by drunkard and chauvinist Gregory (played

The first season was shot largely in Atlanta. By the second season, Raleigh Studios in Senoia — about an hour south of Atlanta — had been created in this town of about 4,000.

Not only does it allow the show to create and keep the communities that make up “The Walking Dead,” but it can be constantly reinvented. The spot where Gabriel’s church once stood?

It was torn down and became the dirt circle where Season 6 ended with Rick and his crew kneeling before Negan, the spot where beloved characters Glenn and Abraham were slain at the end of Negan’s barbed-wire covered bat.

And now? It remains vacant. “This is pretty much hallowed ground,” said Tom Luse, the show’s executive producer, as he gave a group of journalists a tour of the studio grounds. It was a tough scene to shoot, he said, and it was even tougher to lose not only two beloved characters but two actors among a crew that considers itself tight-knit.

“I don’t know if we’ll shoot here again,” Luse said, adding later: “This is a shrine.”

Virtually everything is shot on the site. One exception: The Kingdom,

which is shot at Tyler Perry’s studios at nearby Fort McPherson.

One of the biggest advantages and challenges? The grass and shrubs.

“Greens help hide a million sins,” Luse said. But they also have to ensure it doesn’t get trimmed or mowed too often. “We have to constantly recreate that dead look.”

The show is based on comics created by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore. The comics are still going strong with more than 165 issues so far.

In some cases, the TV show mirrors how it plays out in the comics; in other instances it veers off on its own course.

Even a few characters not seen in the comics find their way on the screen, including Daryl Dixon (played by actor Norman Reedus), a crossbow-wielding character who has proved to be one of the show’s most popular.

Gale Anne Hurd, an executive producer, attributes much of the cast’s camaraderie to Andrew Lincoln, who plays lead character Grimes, a sheriff who emerged from a coma to find the zombie apocalypse has turned the world upside down.

“We work and live in a bubble. And it’s great that’s the case because no one has changed,” Hurd said. “That’s what is special about this show. Not one person from the (original) cast all of a sudden thinks they’re some sort of superstar and has a big trailer or an

entourage. They’re still in two banger trailers.”

When did it start to dawn on them when the show would become a huge success and endure? For Hurd, it was fairly early: Season 2. The characters had escaped to a sprawling farm outside of Atlanta. There was comfort, apparent safety and places nearby to raid for weapons, food and other assorted basics.

“The second season was one in which people arguably could say OK, it slowed down, they’re at the farm, it was focused significantly on character development and the fandom grew,” Hurd said. “And in my mind knowing that there was action to come and there were bigger worlds, more worlds, more characters that if we were building viewers in Season 2 that it was the kind of trajectory that made for a show that could endure.”

Greg Nicotero, special effects guru who has not only made his mark on the show by creating the zombies who lurch and prowl the world but also is co-executive producer and occasionaldirector, called this season’s premier its most propulsive — a word used repeatedly by the cast and crew as they began taping Season 8.

Season 7 was known for segmented episodes that narrowly focused on one character or community. It was described as a tough season to get through, the actors missing the chance to interact with a variety of colleagues and feeling isolated. Cast and crew say the feel for Season 8 is different.

The pace will be accelerated and even the way it’s filmed will feel different, though no one would even come close to betraying those nuggets fans crave to divine which characters might die and how the war will play out.

But they do note that there will be moments that pay homage to all the previous seasons — and to their loyal fans.

“There’s gonna be some moments that people who have watched the show from the beginning will see and be like, ‘Oh, OK, I see what they’re doing here’ by paying tributes to specific moments over the last seven years,” Nicotero said.

T does not matter where you are in your photography journey, the type of camera or phone you use, Bahamian Racardo Thomas is extending an invitation for all to join him as he presents Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photowalk for the second time On the first Saturday of October each year, photographers and enthusiasts around the world take out their cameras and meet up at a designated location in their town to walk around and take photographs, socialize, make new friends, win prizes and be a part of a great cause that is Photowalk.

This year is particularly special because it marks the 10th anniversary of the worldwide event.

The local event will take place on October 7 beginning at the Straw Market on Bay Street from 10am-1pm.

Walkers can submit their best photo taken to enter the international competition. Prizes include a Cannon EOS M5, Pixie Pro10 Printer and many other items valued at more than $4,000.

The Worldwide Photowalk proudly supports The Springs Of Hope Kenya Orphanage, an organization that feeds, houses, educates and empowers young orphans so that they can grow up to not just survive but succeed.

“We’re asking each person who participates to donate to help make a difference in these children’s lives.

Every dollar counts,” he said.

“It is a call for all photographers and videographers whether you’ve been shooting for ten years or ten days to come out, collaborate and meet other like-minded photographers and see the world from their perspective,” he said.

Racardo, who is widely known as “Seven”, is also a graphic designer with a desire to encourage people to discover and pursue their passion.

He is the owner of ThinQ Studios which specializes in wedding and portrait photography.

The business has been rebranded to introduce a new team equally passionate about the business. The team now consists of Eric Bain, Austin Fernander, Rayandra Narin and Aliyah Ramkaran each bringing their own skill to the group.

To women of colour, Rihanna’s cosmetics launch is personal W

orokya Duncan is the director of inclusion for a private school in Manhattan, so her embrace of diversity is a no-brainer.

She’s also a big make-up person frustrated over the years by cosmetics companies that don’t seem to get how important it is for women of colour like her to be serviced, too.

“No line really had what I considered my shade of foundation,” she said.

“There was always like an orange line somewhere. I would have to have my hair down so you couldn’t see where the foundation colour and my actual skin colour separated. Why is it so hard? Because people still find it novel that there’s beauty found in black and brown bodies in the first place.”

Enter one doozy of a beauty: Rihanna. She launched her Fenty Beauty line earlier this month to raves from industry, media and consumers alike.

The superstar spent two years developing her products, which include 40 shades of matte foundations, from the palest of pale to deep, deep brown with cool undertones.

“We’re all just, like, giddy over here,” said Julee Wilson, the fashion and beauty editor for Essence. “I knew that she was going to be thoughtful.

You expect that from a woman of colour coming out with a cosmetics line, but I was honestly shocked at how inclusive the line is.”

The cruelty-free collection has been selling out since Rihanna launched it online and in Sephora and Harvey Nichols stores across 17 countries.

Darker shades of foundation went first, challenging the notion the consumer market in those colours isn’t worth it to the bottom lines of beauty brands.

Wilson and Cat Quinn, the beauty director for the millennial-focused lifestyle site Refinery29, were in a small group of beauty editors who met with Rihanna before the launch to hear her explain her vision.

“I think the thing that people are connecting to most, and why this is doing so well, is because you can really feel the passion and the purpose behind this line,” Quinn said. “It’s not another celebrity make-up line that

In addition to foundations, the line includes a range of palettes and sticks, all developed with help from a prestigious beauty brand incubator called Kendo (it helped launch Kat Von D and Marc Jacobs in cosmetics, too.)

Launching such a vast range of shades at once in so many countries is unusual in beauty, Quinn said.

Television host Hilari Younger, in Bethesda, Maryland, was first in line on launch day at a Sephora in a mall in her hometown. She spent $270 on Fenty Beauty.

“My skin tone is on the mocha, clove side. I’ve tried custom blends, very exclusive lines. The beauty industry is not here for the dark-skinned girls. Either they put too much red in the makeup or it’s too yellow or it’s too oily or it’s just not available,” she said. “This make-up is magical. I was completely sceptical but pleasantly surprised.”

Square, but Fagan’s foundation shade quickly sold out, so she hit up a different New York store several days later and dropped $150 on Fenty Beauty.

“Before Fenty came out there were only three foundations I could find that matched my skin and only one that got my undertone right,” she said. “It’s terribly frustrating. One girl started to cry in the Sephora when the person put the foundation on her skin and it matched.”

The beauty editors said quality was key for a splashy launch of this kind.

“You know, you can match everyone with a foundation, but if the foundation sucks then it doesn’t really serve its purpose,” Quinn said. “It’s actually a really amazing foundation. It’s super long wearing. It’s lightweight but it has really good coverage. Rihanna told us she wanted something that’s sweat proof and life proof and it really is.”

Wilson and Quinn agreed that Rihanna’s move into beauty is more than just makeup.

“It’s become more like a social movement. People are posting pictures and personal stories, like a woman on Instagram with albinism who grew up never having a foundation shade that

was light with peach undertones, or a woman with really dark skin who could never find the right undertones. You’re seeing buzz that’s really moving,” Quinn said.

Celebrities of colour have also taken notice. Gabourey Sidibe posted a photo of support wearing Fenty foundation and a two-year-old girl having some sparkly Rihanna make-up fun has popped up on YouTube .

The product packaging is magnetized, so the cases stick together in a cosmetics bag, and there’s plenty of room for the line to grow. There’s only one lip product, a universal tube called Gloss Bomb, for instance, and there’s no mascara, dedicated eyeshadow or eyeliner, though some of those will be coming October 13. There’s a blotting paper dispenser with a little mirror inside, because Rihanna hates shine, and the line includes brushes and a sponge.

One brush she specifically designed in the shape of a shark’s tooth, angled for more precise application of highlighter.

“I’m hoping that other brands take notice and see that speaking to women of colour is a key to success,” Wilson said. “It’s smart in a business sense and it just should be done because we are part of this world and we have money to spend and we’re spending it when companies are speaking to us.”

Rihanna, who first competed in a beauty pageant at age 15, often does her own make up in three steps and set up her collection along those lines, with plenty of sparkly and shimmery options for fun and neutrals for every day, Quinn and Wilson said. She played right into warm, rusty colours for fall, Quinn said, and many of the highlighters can be used on the lip and eye along with cheeks.

“It shouldn’t be groundbreaking but it is,” Quinn said.

While other companies have added to shade ranges in foundations over the years, including Lancome and L’Oreal, most don’t bother, she said: “You mostly see these launches with five shades of nude. People are saying that’s not OK.” LEANNE ITALIE Associated Press

Translating classic conch into art

ANY Bahamians are acquainted with the local delicacy and beloved conch salad dish. It is a colourful salad with a mix of vegetables and sometimes fruits (for the tropical conch salad lovers) which when combined with a dash of salt and a squeeze of lemon and orange, the outcome is one very diverse and tasty dish.

Those characteristics of conch salad made it the fitting title of an exhibition recently opened at the Salus Gallery

Each artist in “Conch Salad” is an ingredient and together they have produced a show that is giving audiences a diverse taste of Bahamian art.

Work by artists Preston Hanna, Tiffany Williams, Yutavia George, Allan Wallace, Edrin Chris Symonette, Kevvanna Hall, Thomas Hairston, Charlthorn Strachan, Deime Ubani and June Collie will remain on display at the gallery for the next three months.

“The idea of this art exhibition is to balance our togetherness with our individuality. By experimenting with different mediums, we want the viewers to understand that art is ever-changing.

And, it functions as a reminder of free thought, free expression and individuality in networks of conformity,” said participating artist June Collie.

The Salus Project is an art initiative that aims to highlight various aspects of well-being. Founded by Dr Graham Cates and his wife, Nurse Anita Cates the project was created for artists to express themselves in all five areas of well-being: spiritual, financial, physical, emotional and social.

Each artist was afforded the freedom to follow their own theme for the “Conch Salad” exhibition. For instance June started a series based on the late artist Itzchak Tarkay, putting a Bahamian twist on female figures. Artist Preston Hanna has new colourful

portraits of Bahamians, while Edrin Symonette created masks using sand and coral from beaches in Long Island.

“You will have to come to the show to learn about the rest,” June said.

“Viewers can expect to see a preview of the work that is currently being worked on and released leading into next year. In this exhibition we are giving the audience the opportunity to speak with each artist. The artist will describe their theme and process of creating their art.”

Since it’s launch The Salus Project has applied components of well-being to the issues of HIV and AIDS, domestic violence, heart disease, diabetes and protecting the earth.

Inspiring the passion for a greener future

he enthusiasm teacher Shomekhan Cargill has for food and agriculture is so contagious his students signed up for summer classes and rushed back to school this month eager to see the fruits of their labour.

Shomekhan is a young farmer and teacher who firmly believes the key to food security for The Bahamas lies in teaching the younger generation about agriculture and inspiring them to consider it as a viable industry and possible career. Since joining H.O. Nash Junior High School last year he has managed to help the children create a farm which has harvested a variety of vegetables and has successfully reared chickens and goats.

“The students are very receptive,” he said proudly.

“The kids in junior high seem more interested (than senior high) and prefer to be in an outdoor setting than in the classroom. They love doing practical stuff.”

It doesn’t hurt that the kids make money in the process; but they didn’t make that money easily. Preparing products included harvesting and packaging veggies, catching chickens and plucking them for sale along with culling and skinning a goat to make mutton.

The value, Shomekhan believes is in the life lessons the children learn with each class. They discover how to be resourceful, something put to the test during Hurricane Matthew last year. A classroom was turned into a makeshift chicken coop where the farm’s rabbits and ducks joined the party. The goats were battened down but even with all these precautions the students were seriously concerned for their animals’ safety during the storm.

Profits in agriculture can be lucrative considering that our food is almost totally imported. To increase support to farmers and head towards self sufficiency, Shomekhan believes it is necessary for the powers-that-be to

first pinpoint specific objectives for the country.

“When we look at this food security issue we blanket things.” said Shomekhan.

“We have to address the various components of it or else we won’t profit. We need to identify what we are trying to accomplish, whether we want to grow food for emergency situations, limit the amount of food imports or arrive at healthier diet. They can all happen simultaneously but they cannot happen if we blend everything together. It’s disappointing that we are not learning from the mistakes of other countries and piggy-backing off their sucessess. Many countries in the Caribbean are currently focusing on root crops - tubers like cassava and yams - so that if they cannot get rice imports they have their own staple crop.

Those countries identified an obvious problem and fixed it.

“Bahamians are always talking about us growing our own food but not getting serious about it.”

This is why he is steadily pouring his passion into kids. He believes one they can farm and conduct animal husbandry, see the profits of their labour then many more young Bahamians would be inclined to consider agriculture as a career.

Shomekhan believes local restaurants could provide support for domestic producers by promoting the fact their ingredients are locally grown For ordinary families he believes every family should have a garden filled with native fruit trees rather than ornamental varieties.

Kitchen herbs and vines such as pumpkin and watermelon are also easy to grow. ”Overall,” he said, “the system needs to realize the importance of agriculture and food security and push to get young people involved with opportunities to create their own profitable farms in the future.There is a lot of money to be made every day.”

Just who can you trust?

King and son fall short of the mark

“S

leeping Beauties” (Scribner), by Stephen and Owen King Of all the gifts a father can give his son, near the top must be a co-written novel. After all, slapping the name Stephen King on the cover pretty much guarantees a best-seller.

But King fans who crack open “Sleeping Beauties” may be disappointed. The book lacks the pageturning intensity found in so many of his classics. Father and son started with an intriguing premise: What if men and women were separated into two different worlds? Would the men freak out? Would the women create a kinder, gentler society? They’re existential questions that would seem to lend themselves to a 700-page book, but the novel’s answers to both don’t seem nuanced enough.

The plot is relatively simple. One day all the women in the world get

Makani Young has yet to fall in love with her new life in Nebraska with her grandmother. Though she’s made a few friends, she still misses the food, the waves and the weather of Hawaii.

The good news is that nobody in her new school knows who she is or what she did last year. The bad news is that a serial killer is busy targeting the

As the body count and panic rise, Makani, her two best friends Alex and Darby and new love interest, Ollie Larsson (a boy classmates are side-eyeing in suspicion he may be responsible for the deaths), try to piece together a connection between the victims. They also work on staying alive.

The Nebraska cornfields provide a

cloud of moths. She’s certainly the most intriguing character, but her existence is explained away as supernatural. She’s been sent to Earth, we’re told, but by whom? And why? The Kings let those questions linger and instead focus on the men who want to kill Evie versus the men who want to save her.

The action centers around a women’s prison in Appalachia. Each inmate has a story and a reason to wake up or stay in the female-centric alternative reality they find themselves in when they sleep. There are a great many examples of why men are pigs and women would be better off without them, and then there’s our male hero, prison psychiatrist Clint Norcross. Dr. Norcross can’t seem to articulate why, but he thinks Evie needs to be protected, so he holes up with sympathizers in the prison and girds himself for battle with the men outside.

I won’t spoil the rest. King fans who enjoy his blunt language and vivid gore will find lots to like. A bulldozer runs over a man and “shreds of skin flapped like streamers”; a woman cracks open a man’s jaw “like the sound of a drumstick being torn off a Thanksgiving turkey.” In the end, though, the novel feels like it wanted to say something really meaningful about gender relations and settles instead for, “Can’t we all just get along?”

glorious backdrop for blood-soaked scenes and prove equally as valuable in framing the love story. Multifaceted characters and fresh dialogue add texture, while the teetering status of Makani and Ollie’s relationship combined with the hunt for the killer creates suspense from all angles.

Perkins has a knack for the unnerving. Frightened teens stumble upon hair-raising oddities: rearranged furniture, a set of keys in the vegetable crisper, an egg timer positioned atop a welcome mat. She also overlays her work with a flair of carnival sideshow, weaving in sinister humor amid the horror. When readers hear the squelching sound of a victim’s head coming off, they may wonder if laughter is permissible at a time like this. The answer is yes, but remember to check under the bleachers for any knife-wielding assailants first.

by Harlan Coben A New Jersey detective finds himself still haunted by events that occurred 15 years earlier in Harlan Coben’s latest thriller, “Don’t Let Go.” Napoleon “Nap” Dumas spends his time working for the police along with discreetly conducting vigilante justice against men who physically abuse women. One day two police officers arrive on his doorstep with some news. A fingerprint along with DNA he put into the system years ago has come back with a hit at the scene of a police officer’s shooting at a traffic stop. The DNA matches his girlfriend who mysteriously disappeared 15 years earlier, shortly after the death of his twin brother and his brother’s girlfriend.

Nap never believed the official report of their death, and has questioned everything about that fateful night.

The more he investigates her sudden reappearance, along with her involvement in a police officer’s murder, will lead Nap down a rabbit hole that will cause him to lose trust in everyone he loves.

Coben tells the story from Nap’s point of view, so following the mental steps he takes to find the truth adds an extra layer to both the readability and the puzzlement of the story.

When the reveal happens, the other characters have always assumed that Nap knew the truth but was in denial.

Readers know that is not the case.

The likeability of Nap is paramount to this story, and even though he sometimes steps a bit outside the law for his own brand of justice, he is both endearing and sometimes quite witty. Coben is the master of these types of characters while exposing the hidden layers of suburbia.

There are a few elements that don’t make sense in the grand scheme of things, but it doesn’t matter. This is all about Nap and his quest.

The roots to success - forget about short cuts

I

recently attended a farmer’s birthday party, one of those delightful occasions where there is no loud music, no dancing and the post prandial pleasure you look back on is the group conversation while seated at a picnic table quaffing cold beer.

One of the points of discussion was the difficulty of untangling thyme plant roots from seedlings that were sown in bulk. Thyme seeds are very small so the temptation is to broadcast them.

The roots of thyme seedlings are very tender so disengaging them to select single plants involves a high fatality rate. My normal practice is to use an old cheap small paring knife to plant seeds individually in seed trays. Boring? Not really; less effort than weeding.

Last year I was lazy and broadcast my second sowing of carrot seeds. The mess I produced made me swear never to do that again. It may sound attractive to thin out a carrot patch and use the small roots but in practice it was a major chore. The moral: Do things right from the beginning and forget about short cuts.

Carrots are best sown in blocks allowing two inches between plants for Chantenay and three inches for Danvers or Imperator. As I mentioned last week, I like to press the bottom of a milk crate on to the soil and then use the grid imprint to space the seeds neatly.

The common wisdom is to sow carrot seeds in soil that has not had fresh compost added to it in recent months because that would encourage side roots. The soil should be moderately fertile and clear of any rocks that are too big for the carrots to push aside.

Alternatively you can sow carrot seeds in a plastic bin that has drainage holes and a depth of at least 12 inches. In this case you would not grow Imperators.

The most popular type of carrot is Chantenay, the classic carrot shape with a pointed end. Nantes is a little bigger and has a rounded end. For heavy soils the choice is Danvers, a

broad-shouldered muscular carrot shaped like an inverted cone. The largest of all is Imperator. It grows so large that few gardens in The Bahamas have the depth of soil to accommodate its considerable length.

A bin with about two feet of soil would be necessary for optimal growth.

The pulling of carrots is both rewarding and frustrating. A fine head of foliage can top a miserable specimen while a less imposing head can be attached to a beauty. Although carrots can remain in the ground for quite a while they begin to suffer in quality once past their prime and side roots begin to appear. Before this stage is reached it is best to pull up the remainder of the crop, cut off the foliage, wash the carrots, and store them in the refrigerator. In the meantime a second crop started in November or December should be close to pulling and you can eke out the old crop while waiting on the new.

Parsnips are grown as for carrots but are cold weather lovers and do not have the sweet flavour you get in roots that have been nipped by frost.

Parsnips need pulling once mature and cannot be stored in the ground for any length of time.

Beets are very popular back yard garden vegetables and nowadays there is a swing to roasting the beets instead of boiling them. There is also a move to orange or yellow beets that look more natural to roast. And, of course, whichever beets you grow there is the bonus of beet greens.

Sow your beet capsules that contain the seeds in blocks about three inches apart. Once the seedlings are above

ground and substantial the smaller plants can be removed and boiled as baby beets with leaves attached. Pull your main harvest beets slightly early before corkiness develops in the flesh. Whether you roast or boil, have a good vinaigrette to enhance the sweet flavour of your beets. What comes in a can is nothing like what you grow in your garden and cook yourself.

Turnips are popular in Europe but are far less regarded in the US and Caribbean. Turnips grow well in our cooler months and if you have never tried them you may be pleasantly surprised. They have a distinctive flavour that is anathema to some but delightful to others.

More likely to please is rutabaga or swede, a turnip relative that grows larger than a softball and has a much milder, though similar, taste. Peeled, cut into chunks, boiled in salted water, mashed with butter until smooth, sprin-

kled with grinds of fresh black pepper – do all this once and I know you will cook it again. The mashed rutabaga makes a great topping (about half an inch thick) for a ground beef cottage pie about to go into the oven.

Some chefs mash cooked rutabaga with cooked Irish potatoes and get accolades for their distinctive mashed potatoes. Now their secret is out.

Rutabagas are one of the easiest of all crops to grow and are good storers.

Set your rutabaga seeds about 8 inches apart in average soil. Both turnips and rutabagas produce edible foliage for greens.

Kimchi seems to be very popular and the main ingredient is daikon, a giant form of Asian radish. Daikon is so large that you must grow it in a bin with at least 24 inches of soil. Cruise in control but showing hint of darkness

T

here are basically two kinds of Tom Cruise performances, and both can look pretty similar on the surface. Each likes sunglasses, going fast and smiling big.

He never exactly loosens up or slows down — the most unfathomable thing of all in Cruise’s world. But most of Cruise’s best and most interesting performances (”Magnolia,” ‘‘Jerry Maguire,” ‘‘Collateral,” ‘‘Eyes Wide Shut”) have allowed some chink in the well-tanned armour, some hint of darkness underneath the rakish boy scout, some hollowness in the soul of America’s ageless action-movie avatar.

Cruise’s latest is the smart, zippy “American Made,” a movie that plays very much like your type-A Tom Cruise movie before it yanks the rug out from beneath you and reveals the B-movie Cruise we’ve been missing. It’s a fiendishly perfect vehicle for Cruise that returns him to the cockpit, 31 years after “Top Gun,” and it simultaneously reminds us of his preternaturally winning movie-star charisma while subtly deconstructing it.

Doug Liman, the film’s director, has shown a rare knack for intelligently packaging A-list personas in kinetic kaleidoscopes. He did it in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, in “Bourne Identity” with Matt Damon and in his last film with Cruise, “Edge of Tomorrow,” the time-warped science fiction that proved a movie maxim: You just can’t kill Tom Cruise.

In “American Made,” a loosely true tale set in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, Cruise plays Barry Seal, a TWA pilot whose on-the-side smuggling of

Cuban cigars brings him into the orbit of the CIA. An officer named Shafer (Domhnall Gleeson) turns up, and offers him a job taking surveillance photos and making government payoffs to the likes of Panama’s Manuel Noriega in Central America. “We’re building nations down there,” says Shafer, giddy.

Seal, eyeing his own plane and eager to permanently switch off “auto-pilot,” jumps at the chance and doesn’t stop giggling at his good luck. “I do tend to leap before I look,” he says in a video diary that plays occasionally through the film. “Maybe I should have asked a few more questions.”

Blithely, even charmingly ignorant of the dangerous and ethically questionable terrain he’s entering, Seal is soon cheerfully smuggling enormous amounts of cocaine back to Arkansas

for Pablo Escobar’s Medellin Cartel.

On both sides of the law, things escalate quickly. Seal and his family (Sarah Wright Olsen plays his wife), can’t spend their money fast enough. They run out of closet space and backyard holes for all the cash coming in.

The CIA’s missions grow more audacious, too. Seal becomes the government’s clandestine exporter of AK-47s to the Nicaraguan Contras, who in turn are eventually flown back to Seal’s Arkansas base for military training. Seal greets them all with an easygoing grin: “Hola, amigos!”

It’s an increasingly absurd circle of drugs, guns and money, all ostensibly for the fight against “enemies of democracy.” The ironies mount, topping out with Nancy Reagan’s war-on-drugs plea to “say no” while her husband’s secret

efforts to arm militants is fueling one of the most powerful drug cartels in the world.

Like a handful of recent movies such as “War Dogs” and “War Machine,” ‘‘American Made” is a farce of American international ambition run amok.

Here are the comical on-the-ground results of ill-considered policies from all the way up the command chain.

Presidents, beginning with Jimmy Carter and running up to Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton make cameos throughout “American Made.”

It’s both a tribute to and a joke on American opportunism that the cavalier decisions of politicians can so easily and so overwhelming benefit (up to a point) a thrill-seeking pilot who can’t say no. The crescendo comes with Seal, fleeing the DEA, crash lands in a suburb and escapes on a kid’s bike, all the while covered in a white powder of coke. Finally, a fresh and unfamiliar method of escape for Cruise.

“American Made,” written by Gary Spinelli, has glossed up the story, of course. Seal’s life wasn’t nearly so shiny as it is as played by Cruise. But then again, whose is?

“American Made,” a Universal Pictures release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “language throughout and some sexuality/nudity.”

Countdown begins for Race for the Cure

I

t’s one thing to talk about breast cancer. It’s another to actually do something about it, which is why Susan G. Komen Bahamas is pulling out all the stops to get more Bahamians racing for the cure.

Now in its eighth year Race for the Cure is doing all it can to ensure that more Bahamians register for the January event.

Since 2011 the 5K race - which focuses on breast cancer awareness has raised and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to cancer charities in the country. Those funds have been used for genetic research and counselling, temporary housing for cancer patients, mammography machines and Portacaths for individuals undergoing chemotherapy.

The 2018 Race takes place on Saturday, January 13 and will feature a timed 5K run, an annual parade of breast cancer survivors, a concert, an awards ceremony and a spectacular Junkanoo rush-out.

Some of the hottest musicians are slated to perform, including Fanshawn, Patrice Murrell, Stileet along with many other surprise appearances.

For the third year in row comedian and Kiss 96 FM DJ, ‘Naughty’ will host the Survivors Ceremony on Paradise Island. Joining him for the first time will be Kiss 96 FM midday diva, Hope Shelly-Ann who will inject her own flavour to the event.

Race organizers say they are determined to make this race the biggest in its history.

“As soon as our January event ended, our team sat down to chart the course for our 2018 race. We set out with the goal to not only increase the level of participation, but to involve more schoolchildren,” said Rogan Smith, public relations chair for Susan G. Komen Bahamas.

“In the coming weeks, we will unveil radio and TV spots, several of which include children. We recently wrapped up a radio commercial with two young voiceover actors, Tatyanna Forbes and Sierra Blair. We can’t wait for the public to hear it. Children have a unique way of reaching other children, so we’re happy they donated their time and came on board. In addition to that, schools are already touching base to

let us know their students are going to participate.”

Komen Bahamas is offering a special one-time offer – a $5 discount off its Komen registration fee from October 2-6 only.

All children 18 and under who sign up during this time will be automatically entered for a chance to win an iPad Mini with a case and earbuds.

Mistress to a nation’s hero Sir Christopher Ondaatje reminds us of the rise and fall of Emma Hamilton – the mistress of Lord Nelson and the muse of George Romney.

ngland has never been kind to their discarded or abandoned women. Emma, Lady Hamilton is just such a story.

Emma, Lady Hamilton was born Amy Lyon in Ness, Cheshire – the daughter of a blacksmith Henry Lyon – who died when she was only two months old. She was brought up by her single mother, Mary Kidd at Hawarden in Flintshire, Wales, and was never given any formal education. It was only later that she changed her name to Emma Hart.

Nothing is very clear about Emma Hart’s early life, but she worked as a maid to a surgeon in Chester before moving and working for a family in Blackfriars, London. There she met another young maid who had ambitions to be an actress. She too rehearsed with

Emma, Lady Hamilton as Sybil by George Romney her friend, and this led to her being hired as a maid to some actresses, and then to her getting work as a model and dancer at the Temple of Health run by a Scottish “doctor”.

When she was 15 she was hired as a hostess by Sir Harry Fetherstonhaugh in his Uppark country estate in the South Downs. She soon became his mistress. While at Fetherstonhaugh’s estate she also met the Honourable Charles Greville – the second son of the Earl of Warwick. In June 1781 she found she was pregnant with Fetherstonhaugh’s child. Furious at the news of the unwanted pregnancy she was

despatched by Fetherstonhaugh to one of his houses in London where she gave birth to a daughter – who was removed and raised by a Mr. and Mrs Blackburn. Amy then became the mistress of Charles Grenville who forced her to change her name from Amy Lyon to Emma Hart, and kept her in his house on the Edgeware Road. She was still only 16-years-old – and very beautiful. Greville was very much in love with her and sent her to his friend – the artist George Romney – so that he could have a portrait of her. Romney was immediately besotted with her and thus began Romney’s lifelong

obsession – painting and sketching her both nude and clothed in an array of poses.

“Emma’s allure was so extraordinary that the noted portraitist George Romney was commissioned to capture her beauty on canvas. The moment he set eyes on her, Romney was spellbound.”

Emma Hart therefore, mainly because of the popularity of Romney’s paintings, acquired some fame for herself – if not notoriety. She was a clever girl – witty, beautiful, and popular.

“For many years Romney continued to work on pictures of Emma, even after she had left England. In all she sat for him almost 300 times and he made over 50 pictures of her. It was Romney’s paintings of her which preserved her image and helped establish her enduring fame. Emma was Romney’s muse, stirring him to greater art.

He therefore sought out the young heiress Henrietta Middleton and had to, somehow, rid himself of his relationship with the now well-known and beautiful society model Emma Hart. He therefore convinced his uncle, Sir William Hamilton, who was British Envoy to Naples in Italy, to persuade Emma Hart to move to Naples and become his mistress. Sir William Hamilton was delighted at the suggestion and looked after all the travel expenses to ensure the now famous beauty arrived in Naples without further delay. It was a relationship made in heaven. Sir William’s wife had died in 1782, and apart from being a connoisseur and collector of beautiful things, he badly needed a hostess for his salon. Emma, who did not realise Grenville’s plan, was understandably furious when she discovered she was being discarded and shipped to Italy.

Realising that Charles Greville would never again send for her and that he had in reality discarded her, Emma began an affair with Sir William Hamilton who was now in his 50s and twice her age. In 1791 they travelled to England together and were married at St. Marylebone Parish Church

Returning to Naples, Emma Hart, now Lady Hamilton (a name she would use for the rest of her life) continued with the series of “Attitudes” which she had created, and portrayed well-known sculptures and paintings for British and other guests. She was a media celebrity before media existed. She was always surrounded by a crowd of admirers. She was the centre of town gossip, with her every outing the subject of conversation.

In 1793 Horatio Nelson arrived in Naples for the first time to recruit reinforcements against the French. He was welcomed and féted by Sir William and Lady Hamilton - being British Envoys in Naples. This was the first time they had met. Nelson returned again five years later in September 1798 after his victory at the Battle of the Nile in Aboukir. By now he was a living legend, but the scars of combat had seriously affected his health. The battles had aged him, and he had lost an arm and most of his teeth. Although he had his own quarters in the Palazzo Sessa, Emma Hamilton nursed Nelson in her husband’s Envoy headquarters and organised a grand party for 1800 guests to celebrate Nelson’s 40th birthday. He was by now one of the most famous people in England - if not the world.

Inevitably Nelson and Lady Hamilton soon fell in love, and it appears their affair was tolerated by the ageing Sir William Hamilton, who had been pleading with the British Government to release him from his duties in Naples. This did not happen immediately, and was only granted when Nelson was recalled to Britain in 1800. Extraordinarily Nelson, together with Sir William and Lady Hamilton, travelled together, through central Europe, eventually reaching Britain where Nelson received a hero’s welcome.

Nelson’s marriage, however, and his open affair with Emma, Lady Hamilton, quickly became a scandal and an open embarrassment to the British nation. It was exacerbated when Emma gave birth to Nelson’s daughter Horatia on 29 January 1801 in Sir William Hamilton’s rented home in Clarges Street, 23 Piccadilly, London. That autumn the same year Nelson bought a small ramshackle house on the outskirts of Wimbledon. They lived openly together with Sir William Hamilton in this house in a ménage à trois that intrigued the British public.The press reported all their activities and sought out fashionable trends from Emma,

Emma, Lady Hamilton as Circe by George Romney but by now Emma had grown quite fat and was no longer the icon that was féted by the British public. She and Nelson hoped for a much quieter and solitary life. Perhaps Nelson hoped he could divorce his wife and marry Emma but thought this could only be tolerated if he was responsible for another famous victory. There was at any rate no thought of Emma ever divorcing Hamilton – who they both loved and respected. That disgrace would taint Emma Hamilton and bring even greater disgrace on Nelson – still a popular hero.

As it is Sir William Hamilton died in 1803 and the Admiralty, concerned about Nelson’s relationship with Emma, were anxious he should return to sea again to fight in the Napoleonic Wars. He left soon after Sir William’s death – leaving Emma desperately lonely and pregnant with

their second child. She was frantic for Nelson’s return and made a brave attempt to turn their little house in Merton Place into the sort of grand house that Nelson craved. The child, a daughter, died after only a few weeks in 1804. Emma then reportedly spent her time gambling and spending lavishly. However, she realised she was now free to marry Nelson if he could ever obtain a divorce from his wife.

But things did not turn out as they had hoped. On 21 October 1805 Nelson, to much acclaim, defeated the joint Franco-Spanish fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar. Nelson was badly wounded in the battle and died three hours later. Captain Whitby was sent by the Admiralty to Merton Place to bring the news to Lady Hamilton.

mind your victory’, I said. ‘My letters – give me my letters’ – Captain Whitby was unable to speak – tears in his eyes and a deathly paleness over this face made me comprehend him. The death of Nelson at Trafalgar in 1805 was a catastrophe for Emma Hamilton.

The British Government, which had lavished fame, honours and money on Nelson’s family, completely ignored Emma. Hamilton left her money when he died in 1803, and Nelson left her Merton Place. But Nelson had left his estate to his brother William with instructions to provide for her financially. But his brother, now an Earl, completely ignored this request. Emma, now very much addicted to alcohol, was reduced to sell Merton Place and in 1813 was arrested for debt and sent to prison in Southwark with her daughter Horatia. She spent over a year there until friends raised enough money for her to sneak over the English Channel, despite the Napoleonic War, to Calais to escape her debtors. They lived ignored and destitute in humble lodgings. She died in 1815 when she was 49-yearsold of amoebic dysentery which she had probably contracted during her years in Naples. She was buried in the graveyard of the Eglise de St. Pierre in Calais and it is said the Captains of every English ship in the harbour, out of respect for Nelson, attended her funeral. Her grave was subsequently destroyed after large scale destruction of the town during World War I. In 1984 a monument to her was erected in the Parc Richelieu close to where her grave would have been.

Horatia Nelson, her daughter, subsequently married the Rev. Philip Ward and lived in England until 1881. She had ten children but never publicly acknowledged that she was the daughter of Emma Hamilton.

Real pioneers of Bahamasair Forgotten facts Paul C Aranha

I

n my article of August 18 I suggested that, if Bahamasair builds their new headquarters on JFK Drive, it should to be named after either Captain Thomas Alverd Bethel or the late Edward F. Albury. It was a perfect topic for this column, because numerous readers had totally forgotten Eddie and, to a lesser extent, Tommy.

They had forgotten that Bahamasair was created, in 1973, from a company called Out Island Airways (formerly Island Flying Service), which was founded in 1958, by Eddie Albury and Gil Hensler.

In an article by Ricardo Wells, Tommy Bethel described IFS as “a venture started with very little, beyond a beat-up Widgeon amphibian aircraft, a prayer, tenacity and guts”.

On November 10, 1959, at 9:30 in the morning, 20-year-old Tommy went to work for Eddie and Gil, which means that, on day one of Bahamasair’s existence, Tommy already had over 13 years of seniority – and Eddie had even more. That’s dedication.

In 1949, Edward Franklin Albury started his career in aviation as an engineer with Bahamas Airways and went on to build OIA into a major force in the Bahamas, with some 150 employees (80 percent Bahamians) and a large fleet of aircraft.

Having nursed IFS/OIA/Bahamasair through some 18 years, Eddie resigned from Bahamasair when he was Assistant Managing Director, but never abandoned the business he founded, for he was invited back, in 1992, to take charge of the entire Engineering and Maintenance sector.

Tommy’s job at IFS might well be described as a “gofer”, forever being told to go for whatever somebody needed. I met him when I took my

Stinson Station Wagon in for mechanical work and we became friends.

Airplanes seemed to be the only thing he talked about and I could feel his need to fly.

Tommy took his first flying lesson on Wednesday, September 28, 1960 and made his first solo flight less than a

month later. His natural talent for flying was already evident and I believe it came from growing up in Abaco dinghies. His handling of seaplanes was masterful.

For years, I encouraged Tommy to move up to Bahamas Airways, never thinking that OIA would outlast BAL,

but Tommy would not hear of it. His loyalty to Eddie and Gil– and the airline that he had helped them build – was unshakable.

The net result of this was that, when I joined Bahamasair about 3 months after its going into business, Tommy was Deputy Chief Pilot and he and I piloted the BAC One-Eleven together.

We were a Bahamasair crew, but the outside of the plane said OIA and Air

Year’s end approaches by masses still to do

s summer turns to autumn, at present in name only as we have not seen any change in this stifling, humid and hot weather, the BHS starts to gear up for the year’s end. The Christmas season is within touch and a broad selection of events and excitement lies ahead. Our days grow shorter and the nights longer, more time to be at home with our pets.

Many of these events are designed to raise awareness and funds to continue the hard work of the Bahamas humane Society shelter, the clinic and our rescue team.

September 27 was the day of the Annual General Meeting where a new board was voted in and reports read and shared with those members who were interested in hearing about our successes and challenges. Watch this space for the new board members and our objectives for 2017 – 2018.

A huge shout out to the Artist Malcolm Rae who had a very interesting art show/raffle last week and kindly donated a generous percentage to the BHS. The event was very success-

George the puppy!

ast week was George the cat - this week, meet George the puppy!

George (brown) and his kennelmate Simon (black and white) are having a ball at the Bahamas Humane Society, but they would love to have ‘forever homes’ of their own. George was found at St. George’s Church; Simon was left on the doorstep (literally! not even in a box) of the BHS, but the two have bonded in spite of their disparate arrivals. They’re very playful and bouncy as young puppies are. They’re each about eight weeks old. Do you have the energy to keep up with these two handsome bundles of joy? If so, please come in to the BHS to meet them, or call 323-5138 for more information. Adoption hours are 11am. to 4 pm. Monday to Friday and 10am. to 4 pm Saturday. Simon & George look forward to romping with you!

The Thrift Shop can be found adjacent to the main BHS shelter building and clinic in Chippingham.

Month of November is Grand Raffle month. Tickets for sale at $5.00 apiece, a full book for $100.00 (one free ticket in a book). First prize amazingly generously donated by SUPER VALUE of a $10,000.00 gift certificate. Groceries for a year! Many other, useful homeowner gift certificates as well Look out for BHS volunteers selling raffle tickets at Super Value and Solomon’s stores. Hopefully a few banks will welcome us too. Anybody who wishes to help us sell is gratefully welcomed.

The ever popular BHS Fashion Show is being held on November 23.

The Bahamas National Trust’s “Jollificaton” is November 17,18, 19. The Bahamas Humane Society always has a stall there and we have lots of wonderful toys and gifts for your pet. The 2018 BHS calendar will be for sale as well as a selection of t-shirts, collars, books, The annual Christmas Fair at the president’s home is still waiting for date: Jewellery, handbags, art, cookies, candies and many other fun and unusual items ready to clutter under your Christmas tree. More information will be available from the shelter in a few weeks.

The BHS is also planning to have a quiz night in the near future, but are in need of a couple of volunteers to assist us in the organization of the actual evening…..if this sounds like fun. please contact the shelter and leave a message for Kim Aranha (323 5138) On a date to still be decided in December the Bahamas International Film Festival is planning a special showing to benefit the BHS. BIFF founder and executive director, Leslie Vanderpool, is working on the details and an announcement will be made in the near future. BIFF is also planning a small auction at the event for proceeds to go to the animals.

Membership drive: 2018 has to be the year we double our membership.

This organization that works so hard and has so much support yet has so few members. Membership is not expensive and is a guaranteed way to help us to do our work Christmas food drive: We would like to conduct a food drive this Christmas asking pet owners to “buy an extra bag or case “ of food to give the shelter. For our food bank that helps owners feed their animals.

Please don’t forget that we still collect “cans for kids” and use the funds to pay for our school education programme.

The B-humane awards will be presented in January, please if you have somebody to nominate in any of the following categories: Nassau based, Out-islands based, International, or Corporate, let us know who that would be. We are looking for people who have gone above and beyond in the care and generosity to animals and to the shelter.
