Cara says:”Yellow is obviously big now, but its really all about finding the right shade. Her dress is a bit bland and really does nothing for her, but then she went and changed the game with this gorgeous and dramatic wrap and turned my fashion no into a fashion yes.”

Karin says: “I love anything Kelly green (and green is going to be big this Fall/ Winter). The mid-length, off-the-shoulder gown is just so vintage and so pretty. I love the belt and the stunning necklace. The dull brown pumps, however, have to go.”

Cara says: “This green is just popping. And I really love the 50’s inspired cut of the gown; so pretty and feminine. I really like her playful pose and I can just picture her twirling down the red carpet.”

Cara says: “Yes, to the cut, fit and style of the dress and the matching shoes (loving the ‘matchiness’). This is a colour that you will either love on her or hate. But that is really a personal preference.”

Karin says: “I should hate all the yellow-on-yellow (with yellow hair no less), but I kinda love it. She’s just so glamorous, so sleek in this Dior design. The oversized shawl is fabulous.’

Karin says: “Ah yes, the vintage bathing suit look, complete with swim cap (or is a nod to ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’?) I have no idea what the gloves and black talonlike nails are supposed to represent. This is just all around terrible.”

Cara says: “OK, so this is different, and by different I mean hideous. I just don’t get it. First, the colour is so pale, it just washes her away. Second, what is on her head and why the gloves? I know she was going for a fashion moment, but it really doesn’t work.”

Karin says: “Another neon dress. She totally pulls off the striking colour, but I’m not in love with this two-piece. In every picture I’ve seen of her, she doesn’t look comfortable in this outfit. It’s not a bad look, and I don’t mind the cropped top look, but skirt doesn’t quite sit right.”

Cara says: This neon colour looks gorgeous on her dark skin, and I am loving the drama of her short hair and make-up. And my matchyloving heart says yes to her shoes being the same colour.

But I have to agree with Karin, the fact that it’s a two piece is a bit distracting, to be honest, I would have preferred it to be a dress.”

GGYA CONNECT, COLLECT TRASH AT CORAL HARBOUR CANAL Armed with gloves, trash bags, masks and tally sheets, participants in the Governor General Youth Award were among scores of volunteers helping to remove more than 5,000 pieces of waste and debris at a Coral Harbour waterway during a synchronized coastal cleanup exercise taking place around the world.

“I can’t believe people were polluting this area. It was bad. I was shocked by the amount of trash I saw. It was a lot to cleanup and there’s still more out there,” said Carlicia Brown, a 12th grader who collected bags of plastic, glass bottles and even parts of an air condition unit with her team of five.

The RM Bailey Senior High School student signed up for the outing as a means to relieve boredom and got more than she bargained for.

“I haven’t been out the house in quite a while. I saw an opportunity to volunteer and thought sure, why not? I didn’t realise people brought out their dump from home and just left it in the back here, which was wrong. Stop polluting the area.

Keep it clean, green and pristine.”

The Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) is the world’s largest volunteer effort for ocean’s health.

It’s observed annually on the third Saturday in September.

home of Dolphin Encounters – recruited volunteer organisations and individuals to remove trash from Coral Harbour’s canal.

Blue Lagoon serves as the ICC coordinator for The Bahamas.

Typically, the initiative attracts around 300 persons. This year, the

September 18 event was scaled back in line with COVID-19 protocols, said Teshalla Clarke, one of its organisers.

About 93 participants from Rotary, Rotaract, the Boys Brigade, Toastmasters and GGYA collected 5,392 items. The garbage included building materials, appliances, plastic bags, food containers, bottles and cans. It took two workdays to tally up collection records and measure their cleanup impact.

According to Ms Clarke, Beach Buddies’ goal is to focus on pollution awareness through education and action resulting in cleaner and healthier marine environments.

International observers say the data collected from cleanup crews around the world could lead to new research and policy changes.

“I feel proud of myself because I actually did something,” said Carlicia, the high school student.

“We helped the environment.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has decreased or in some cases stopped in-person volunteer activities, which is a key component to young people receiving a Bronze, Silver or Gold pin from GGYA, the local affiliate of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, the world’s leading youth development award programme.

Available to all young people ages 14-24, GGYA motivates youth to undertake a variety of voluntary and challenging activities.

Kenvaughn Mortimer, a 14-yearold participant from CR Walker Senior High School got roped into the exercise by his uncle. He signed the young man up for GGYA so he could be active on weekends when he’s not involved in Boys Brigade or taking part in the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Rangers.

“This made me think about coastal cleanup and taking a more active role in taking care of the environment,” he said.

Ashley Moree With the goal of getting young Bahamians more involved in the country’s policy-making process, which will ultimately impact their future, this 25-year-old legal assistant has started her own unique talk show. She tells Alesha Cadet how she wants to connect younger people with political leaders so they can learn from one another’s experiences and perspectives.

I

nspired by her belief that young Bahamians are often more interested in politicians abroad than they are in those at home, Ashley Moree came up with the idea to create a local platform to change that attitude.

On her interactive talk show, “What You Think”, she invites young Bahamians and politicians to get to know one another a bit better, and for citizens to become more involved in the policy-making process that impacts their future.

Ashley believes this is the perfect time to “lift the curtain” and get a closer look at the people who are steering the ship, so to speak.

A 25-year-old legal assistant, Ashley is also a secondyear LLB student at the University of the Bahamas. She pioneered the GLOW (Go Light Our World) project in 2018 in an effort to provide clothing for less fortunate girls.

Her show, “What You Think”, has so far featured names guests like Loretta Butler-Turner, Glenys HannaMartin, and several young people between the ages of 25 and 31.

“The goal is to facilitate dialogue by presenting different perspectives, which causes viewers to have a well-rounded look at how others perceive various issues and are affected by them. I have always been a person to ask others, ‘What you think?’ as a means of considering another point of view before taking a position on any given topic, and I realised that the dialogue created from those conversations always left me and the other person with a new point to consider or a new topic to research,” she told Tribune Weekend.

“I think it’s important for us to engage in conversations that force us to evaluate our conclusions and avoid bigotry.

“At the foundation of ‘What You Think’ is perspective.

You get to listen to both sides. What do you agree with or disagree with, and why? This was my thought process for the first season. The political season was the most relevant when I decided to start, and at that time and I felt that a lot of my peers and even in some instances, myself, were not able to support our political views.”

Ashley said the goal is to have candid conversations with political leaders, to hear their thoughts, their perspectives, and share her perspective as a younger member of society. And she did just that in the lead-up of the recent election, hearing from the PLP and FNM. The show’s episodes, which so far have aired on the “What You Think” Facebook and Instagram pages, will soon have a home on YouTube as well.

Chelsea fulfils lifelong dream making others look beautiful

L

osing her job during the pandemic turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Chelsea Babb.

Instead of falling into a funk over her financial uncertainty, she decided to fulfil her lifelong dream of becoming a hairstylist and nail technician. She even opened her own salon, Impressive Styles.

“I was a grocery store supervisor and the store closed during the pandemic. I knew that I needed to do something to stay make ends meet,” she told Tribune Weekend.

“I decided that I needed to just do what I needed to do. I had always enjoyed doing hair from when I was a little girl and so I started taking in a few clients here and there and every dollar I could make I put it towards my dream.”

Chelsea said the silver lining amidst the stress of the pandemic was that she was forced to stop procrastinating and finally pursue her dreams.

Chelsea said lately her clients have been looking for frontal lace closure wigs, knot buns, and when it comes to nails, she said it’s all about colour.

“Ladies are really into 3D nail design, and they want colour. Really, only my clients who work in a corporate setting go for something more neutral,” she said.

Chelsea said she would encourage anyone to follow in her footsteps and pursue their long-held dreams.

Primary ingredients to successful potting: peat-based mixes

G

ood day gardeners! As we begin getting our planters, garden beds, and pots ready for a new vegetable growing season, what will you consider using as a starting medium for seeds or starter plants and as a growing medium once the plants are large enough to transplant?

The most common and often a primary ingredient in professional and commercial potting mixes is sphagnum peat moss (obviously when talking of hydro or aeroponics this is a moot point), which is available in many different grades from fine to course, and in many different mixes from several different manufacturers.

There is a big difference in quality to sphagnum peat moss, as with

anything, and price does not always reflect quality for us here in the Bahamas, although it does often reflect the cost to get to the island whichever one you may happen to be on, because it all must come from somewhere else. Remember caveat emptor - buyer beware!

There are premium brands that are superior to budget brands, as with anything. Why do we use sphagnum peat moss as an ingredient in planting mixes to begin with? Primarily it comes down to sterility. Peat moss is antiseptic, free of weed seed, and most importantly it is free of fungus spores and bacteria. I’ve read that peat moss was used in World War II SPHAGNUM peat moss as a dressing for wounds, due to its antiseptic properties. Conversely, compost and topsoil are loaded with weed seed, fungi and bacteria,

possibly also nematodes and viruses, that can adversely affect everything from germination rates to final plant quality or to even having success growing the plants at all.

Composts and native soils are not recommended for seed germination or for starter transplants due to the high levels of pathogens and weed seed. Pathogens (fungi, bacteria, etcetera) can contribute to a process called damping off, where the new leaves or stems of seedlings rot due to the unavoidable presence of pathogenic agents. This is not to say that one ought to not use topsoil or compost when transplanting mature plants, but it is to say that these two ingredients are not recommended for the early stages of tender plants due to the pervasive and persistent presence of pathogens, even with pasteurisation (add dumplings, that’s p’s soup!).

All the peat moss available in our region is sourced from just south of the US and Canadian border, and from vast areas of peat bog in Canada. Locally, we simply do not have the raw materials needed to create a sterile mix (caveat: coconut coir, that’s for another day).

I’ve walked on a living, that is still growing, peat bog in Canada, and it is a unique feeling as if one is walking on a massive sponge which is pretty much what it is, as there is a lot of water stored in the medium (peat bogs can be many meters in depth, up to 30’ or 9.144 meters, for example). The bog that I visited was in a Provincial Park system that had lovely descriptive and unblemished signs fully explaining what I was experiencing…imagine that. To the point, sphagnum peat moss is one of the essential ingredients to making a successful plant product being grown in a pot, for the time being (caveat #2: natives, for another day).

Things are changing and to touch back to the initial caveat; coconut coir may be a viable option sometime soon (we can hope). Gardening mixes typically do not contain peat moss, generally. Peat mixes may contain vermiculite or perlite, as well as several other additional ingredients to balance pH for example or to create airspace, increased moisture holding capacity or drainage where needed.

Sterility is the goal when starting seeds or transplanting tender seedlings. It is recommended to use a mix specific to the purpose, to avoid issues with uniformity, germination rates, seedling health, and eventual success via harvest. What will you be growing your potted veg, herbs, foods and medicines this season?

Choice of potting media is the most important choice after what it’s all going into.

Baking for good

I

t has been quite the year for pastry chef Chante Basden. Not only did the Abaco native place fourth in the Great Pastry International competition, but she was also featured in two international pastry magazines and helped feed people on her island in the aftermath of both Hurricane Dorian and during the COVID -19 pandemic.

“A lot of things have been going on,” she told Tribune Weekend.

“I came fourth in the Greatest Baker 2020 competition, which was held in November, and I am so delighted that I did so well because not only were there over 20,000 competitors from all over the world, but I was also the youngest competitor. It has opened so many doors for me.”

The Greatest Bakercompetition is the world’s largest online competition for bakers. It is an annual voter-based contest hosted by celebrity bakers Alice Fevronia and Sophie Faldo, who guide participants with helpful tips and advice Chante had to receive a significant number of votes to advance through each round of the competition.

“One of the best things about the competition is that we were able to raise money for the No Kid Hungry Foundation.”

“It is a national campaign run by Share Our Strength, a nonprofit working to solve problems of hunger and poverty in the United States and around the world. The Bahamas was able to benefit from those funds, which was awesome,” she said.

Following the competition, Chante was featured in both the Bake From ScratchMagazine and the Pastry Arts Magazine.

“I made history for the Bahamas as the youngest Bahamian chef to be published in both magazines,” she said.

In both magazines, she was able to fulfil her passion of educating the world on the high-calibre of pastries and the flavour of local fruits that the Bahamas is known, for such as guava duff, coconut and pineapple tarts.

In fact, the recipe she submitted for the virtual contest was a Bahamian guava cream cheese swirl danish with a guava bourbon glaze.

“I would love to share that recipe and others with many people around the world as I can, so being featured in those magazines was a breath of fresh air. I want people to see from my experiences that dreams can come true,” she said.

Chante has already had many of her own personal dreams come true. She is an

ACF certified international pastry chef, an ACF certified culinarian, a Greatest Baker 2020 finalist, and the San Pellegrino Almost Famous Chef Winner.

Chante has been baking since before she could even reach the kitchen countertop, thanks to the fact that her mother and grandmother owned a bakery.

After she decided she wanted to turn her passion into a profession she went to school to obtain a Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Baking and Pastry and Culinary Arts and in Business Administration and Culinary Management.

For the past several years, she has run her family’s business, Da Best Yet Bakery and Patisserie, currently located in Abaco, and soon to be, Nassau.

In addition to their baked breads, they sell many of her original recipe creations.

But the bakery has had it share of difficulties after almost being completely destroyed during Hurricane Dorian.

Thankfully, some of their equipment was salvaged and the family was able to rebuild.

As the only bakery on the island during the pandemic, Chante said business was booming and they helped to ensure everyone had the baked items they needed.

Chante is also passionate about exposing other young people to the industry.

She has given Rotary presentations and she also has hired several young people to serve as interns in the family bakery so they can gain first-hand experience of the business.

“I want them to see that it can be a lucrative career,” she explained.

literary lives - Humphrey Bogart (1899 - 1957)

Remembering the Bogey legacy Part II Sir Christopher Ondaatje continues to remember the American film and stage actor whose performances in Classical Hollywood films made him an American cultural icon.

“Whether in a white dinner jacket or in a trench coat and snap-brim fedora, he became a new and timely symbol on the post-Pearl Harbour American scene – tough but compassionate, sceptical yet idealistic, betrayed yet ready to believe again and above all, a potentially deadly opponent.”

- Anne M Sperber Author, Bogart (1997) Casablanca (1942) gave Bogart his first romantic lead opposite Ingrid Bergman. The film also included Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, Paul Henreid, Peter Lorre and the pianist Dooley Wilson. Directed by Michael Curtiz, Bogart and Bergman’s on-screen relationship was pure magic and very different from that off the set, when they hardly spoke to each other.

Howard Hawks, who also had his eye on the young ingenue.

“Bogie fell in love with the character she was playing, so she had to keep playing it for the rest of her life.”

- Howard Hawks Bogart’s on-screen off-screen meetings with Bacall were discreet and brief, their separations bridged by love letters. He considered himself Bacall’s protector and mentor, and filed for divorce from Mayo Methot in 1945. Bogart and Bacall were married at Pulitzer Prize-winning author Louis Bromfield’s Malabar Farm on May 21, 1945.

Soon after filming To Have and Have Not, Bogart and Bacall were reunited in the film noir The Big Sleep (1946), a novel by Raymond Chandler with a script by William Faulkner. It was a successful shoot but the film was withdrawn and re-edited to duplicate the chemistry achieved between the two actors in To Have and Have Not. The added scenes were full of sexual innuendo and Bogart’s insolent character was convincing as private detective Philip Marlowe.

The Bogarts moved into a mansion in Los Angeles Holmby Hills. Although a happy marriage, tensions erupted over Bogart’s drinking. He was a homebody while she loved the nightlife. He loved sailing his yacht Santana, which made her seasick.

The suspenseful Dark Passage (1947) was Bogart and Bacall’s next collaboration – another film noir, before they made Key Largo – their last pairing in a film directed by John Huston. The film also included Edward G Robinson as the gangster Johnny Rocco, and Claire Trevor, who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress playing Johnny Rocco’s physically abused, alcoholic girlfriend. The film’s characters are trapped during a hurricane in a hotel owned by Bacall’s father-in-law played by Lionel Barrymore. It was very similar to Bogart’s earlier “bad-guy” films.

With his new film contract and the right to form his own production company, Bogart teamed up again with director John Huston to make The Treasure of the Sierra Madre about greed and gold prospecting in America. It was a man’s film and a risky project – but Huston and Bogart got their way with the film, which had neither a love interest nor a happy ending. Huston wanted it made and he got Bogart’s backing. Not surprisingly he won the Academy Award for Best Director and Best Screenplay, and his father Walter Huston won the Best Supporting Actor award. The film was a showpiece for Huston and his talents but did not do well at the box office.

Bogart, as permitted in his new contract, created his film company Santana Productions in 1948.

Bergman, who had a reputation for sleeping with all her leading men, later replied: “I kissed him, but I never knew him.”

Casablanca won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1943, but Bogart, although he was nominated for Best Actor, lost to Paul Lukas who won for his performance in Watch on The Rhine.

Nevertheless, Bogart’s salary leaped to $400,000 after Casablanca, making him the world’s highest paid actor.

Bogart was still battling Mayo Methot, his third wife, when he made the film To Have and Have Not (1944) – an adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s novel. It had several similarities to Casablanca.

The same enemies, the same sort of hero, a piano player (Hoagy Carmichael), and a good-looking girl – only this time she was nineteen years old with high cheekbones, a lean body, green eyes and tawny blond hair. She was Lauren Bacall and had been a model since she was sixteen. Bogart was forty-four. The emotional bond was immediate despite the age difference and acting experience. Bogart encouraged her to steal scenes and made it easy for her to make her first film. It was Bogart’s first affair with a leading lady and he had to combat the amorous attentions of the director,

Jack Warner was furious, conscious of the fact that other leading actors like James Stewart and Henry Fonda would follow suit – which they did.

In the mid 1950s, Bogart’s health started to deteriorate but he kept on working. The Barefoot Contessa by Joseph Mankiewitz was filmed in Rome and Bogart played a broken man who makes a star out of a flamenco dancer. Although Bogart’s performance was strong, he was disillusioned by the weak acting of Ava Gardner. The film was not a success but gave Bogart the opportunity to resume a long-time affair with Venita Bouvaire-Thompson – his studio assistant and drinking companion.

Bogart made his final two films for Warner Bros.

Chain Lightning (1950) and The Enforcer (1951).

All Santana Productions’ films were distributed through Columbia Pictures between 1949 and 1953: Knock on Any Door (1949); Tokyo Joe (1949); In A Lonely Place (1950); and Sirocco (1951). Beat the Devil (1953) – the last film Bogart and John Huston made together, was distributed in the United States by United Artists. But before that, outside Santana Productions, they made The African Queen together with Katherine Hepburn.

None of the Santana films made any money and Bogart sold his Santana Productions interest to Columbia Pictures for $1 million in 1955.

John Huston jumped at the chance to do another adventure film with Bogart. He and Sam Spiegel had bought the rights to the CS Forester novel The African Queen which had lain dormant for fifteen years. Spiegel sent the book to Katherine Hepburn who suggested Bogart for the lead.

He was to get thirty percent of the profits, and she was to get ten percent. Both would receive small salaries. The stars met in London before flying to the Belgian Congo for a difficult shoot in difficult conditions. Bacall came over for the four-month film production. Nearly everyone in the cast developed dysentery except Bogart and Huston who survived on baked beans, canned asparagus and alcohol.

He made The Left Hand of God (1955) with a mentally depressed Gene Tierney, and insisted on Joan Bennett’s starring role when a personal scandal erupted causing an outraged Jack Warner to demand her replacement in We’re No Angels (1955). She stayed in the picture. He was always generous with fellow performers.

Hepburn, a teetotaller, fared worse than the other film crew in difficult conditions. She lost a lot of weight, at one point becoming extremely ill.

The crew overcame illness, surviving ant infestations, poor food, attacking hippos, bad water filters, extreme heat, and dangerous marshes, rivers, and isolation to make the film.

“Lauren Bacall and Bogie seemed to have the most enormous opinion of each other’s charms, and when they fought it was with the utter confidence of two cats locked deliciously in the same cage.”

In 1954, he agreed to play the older conservative brother in Sabrina (1954) where he competed with his younger playboy brother William Holden for the elf-like Sabrina – played by Audrey Hepburn.

Despite a strained relationship with the film’s director Billy Wilder (Bogart far preferred John Huston), the ageing Bogart adeptly managed his unlikely romantic lead with skill and sympathetic timing. It was a difficult role and gave the film the success it deserved.

At Romanoff’s in Beverley Hills, the name was made official, with Sinatra appointed “pack leader”, Bacall “den mother”, and Bogart “director of public relations”. Asked by the columnist Earl Wilson what the Pack’s purpose was, Bacall replied: “To drink a lot of Bourbon and stay up late.”

Bogart’s performance as the cantankerous harddrinking river-boat captain Charlie Allnutt earned Bogart his only Academy Award for Best Actor in 1951. It was a popular decision and he thought it the best performance of his career. The world agreed with him.

“I gave up drinking once. It was the worst afternoon of my life.”

Humphrey Bogart was a founding member of the Hollywood Rat Pack. In the spring of 1955, after a long party in Las Vegas with Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Sidney Luft, Michael Romanoff, David Niven and Angie Dickinson, Bacall surveyed the wiped-out performers and said, “You

Bogart formed another production company and a long-term deal with Warner Bros. However, his health was deteriorating and a persistent cough and difficulty eating became too serious to ignore. His plans for a film Melville Goodwin, U.S.A. were dropped. A heavy smoker and drinker, Bogart had developed esophageal cancer, confirmed by his doctor in January 1956.

The condition worsened and Bogart had surgery to remove his esophagus, two lymph nodes and a rib. The surgery was unsuccessful, and he had additional surgery in November 1956. He bore his pain with stoic bravery and, when too weak to walk, requested he ride up and down floors in the dumbwaiter in style. It was then altered to accommodate his wheelchair.

Bogart lapsed into a coma and died on January 14, 1957 – twenty days after his fifty-seventh birthday.

A simple funeral was held at All Saints Episcopal Church in Los Angeles, and attended by Katherine Hepburn, Spencer Tracey, Judy Garland, David Niven, Ronald Reagan, James Mason, Bette Davis, Danny Kaye, Joan Fontaine, Marlene Dietrich, James Cagney, Errol Flynn, Edward G Robinson, Gregory Peck, Gary Cooper, Billy Wilder, and Jack L Warner. John Huston delivered the eulogy.

All dogs go to heaven, or The diary of a fur-angel

W

ow! it certainly is a good thing that there are no space constraints in Rainbow Bridge.

There are so many new arrivals every day, I simply do not know how Frances and Nimba manage to check everybody in and settle everybody every day without being totally exhausted.

All the new arrivals are happy, healthy, and of course the moment their feet touch the ground in Rainbow Bridge they are young again.

A few interesting dogs have arrived in the past couple of months: one is a splendid little fellow who used to live in London called Sbaghie. He’s white and very fluffy and awfully sweet. He tells me that his mum and my mum know each other and are friends. He is a very well-travelledfellow, and quite a social one too. He used to go out with his mum a lot, in fact, he left his water bowl stashed behind the bar at a couple of spots in London!

He managed to stay with his mum for 18 years; three years longer than I was able to do.

I guess by now you’ve probably worked it out, but this is actually the diary of yourfur-angel, Chiefie.

I have almost spent four months up here now and I must say I have settled down very nicely. I only recently got fitted with my permanent wings, and boy can I fly quickly with them.

Remember how a few weeks ago mum was looking out the window of the airplane and she wondered if she might see me? Boy,was that ever close; she almost caught a glimpse of me. I had to rush behind a rain cloud, good thing I don’t mind getting wet anymore because that could’ve been a problem once upon a time, I hated water.

I spend quite a lot of time checking on my family. I like seeing how well everybody has settled into the new house. My four “siblings” have all figured out where their special spots are. I notice that they do not miss me as much as I thought they would.

Perhaps it is because I was actually

quite bossy with them. I was always drilling them about their guarding skills. It pleases me to see that they can bark up quite a storm now that they have accepted their new home.

Mum still misses me lots, I can tell. Sometimes she calls Boss by my name by mistake; an easy error because we do look very similar.

Thank goodness she put up my food bowl but has not given it away yet (I am sighing and shaking my head).

She kept my tags too and keeps them in her desk drawer. I catch her looking at them sometimes while she remembers me. I don’t like to see her feel sad, but I know that is natural.

She will never forget me.

I often have a little visit with Buddy, my brother by another mother (as they like to say in the Bahamas). He and I were very good friends when I was in solid form,

and now that I am up the Rainbow Bridge, I can chat with him when he is snoozing; he has taken over as the leader of the pack. They have it a lot easier than they did under me. I was a bit more regimental. Well, after all, my name is Chief. Dogs are super sensitive to the supernatural (as humans call it; for us it is the “super normal”). I can check in with my old Buddy boy pretty much whenever I want to.

I like their new garden, lots of new plants to sniff. I used to love sniffing every leaf when possible. I remember waking mum up because it suddenly crossed my mind that I had forgotten the last clump of pink rain lilies along the walkway. I had to laugh because she was convinced that I had to use the bathroom…. humans can be so funny. She didn’t realise that I had quite simply missed those lilies and wouldn’t rest until I had checked them.

It’s fun to hang out and play with Star (my adoptive mother) and Rascal. They keep talking about the little boys and I have to remind them that the “little boys” are now grown men! Little baby Snowy and Scruffy (Sir Scruffs to you) spends lots of time with me. The biggest joke of all is that Snowball and Merlyn who hated each other on earth are inseparable. I know mum would love to see that!

Every one of the fur-angels who left behind people they loved spend time watching over their special ones. If you suddenly hear a slight noise, or feel a tingle when you least expect it, they just might be right there with you.

ithout the generosity of the late Orjan Lindroth, I might never have heard of Gaspard Le Marchant Tupper (1826-1906) and his watercolours of my belovèd New Providence.

I treasure the 2004 book that he and his wife, Amanda, produced, in cooperation with the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas, “The Awakening Landscape – The Nassau Watercolours of Gaspard Le Marchant Tupper.”

From his name, I assumed the artist to be Frenchman, but Google proved me wrong. Tupper was an Englishman and an officer in the British Army, who served in widely scattered parts of the world, including Nassau.

One of his forebears, LieutenantGeneral J Gaspard Le Marchant, enjoyed one of the most illustrious careers in the history of the British Army. Early in his career, he said: “I am determined to rise to the head of my profession and nothing but death will stop me.”

He was true to his word and went on to found the Royal Military College, serving as its long-term governor.

It was he who revolutionised the training of British officers, beginning with his handbook “Rules and Regulations for the Sword Exercise of the Cavalry”.

He produced a revolutionary design for a sabre, regarded as one of the best of its kind; and died a glorious

death in 1812, at the Battle of Salamanca, a distinguished officer who had devoted his life to the pursuit of professionalism. At public expense, a monument to him was erected in London’s St Paul’s Cathedral.

Lt-Gen Marchant included the classics, drawing and watercolouring in the curriculum of the new Royal Military College, which explains why there are so many excellent paintings and watercolours produced by countless British officers, wherever they happened to be posted. Tupper’s works are excellent examples.
