At the service, NNWC President Stephanie Rolle said the organisation is focusing on safety and crime prevention, working hand-in-hand with the Royal Bahamas Police Force. She further stated that the team will be conducting door-todoor visits to hear the concerns of residents with regards to crime prevention and will take a proactive approach in addressing matters of concern. “Monthly meetings will be held to ensure a consistent effort is made in achieving the mandate and goals of the organisation,” she said. ‘SOME WANTED ME DEAD:’ POPE ACKNOWLEDGES RIGHT-WING CRITICS By NICOLE WINFIELD Associated Press ROME (AP) — Pope Francis has acknowledged his increasingly vocal conservative critics, saying their “nasty comments” were the work of the devil and adding that “some wanted me dead” after his recent intestinal surgery. Francis made the comments during a September 12 private meeting with Slovakian Jesuits soon after he arrived in the Slovak capital of Bratislava during his justfinished visit. A transcript of the encounter was published Tuesday by the Jesuit journal La Civilta Cattolica, which often provides afterthe-fact accounts of Francis’ closed-door meetings with his fellow Jesuits when he’s on the road. Francis showed his dark sense of humor throughout the encounter, particularly when a priest asked him how he was feeling. The September 12-15 HungarySlovakia trip was Francis’ first international outing since undergoing surgery in July to remove a 13-inch chunk of his large intestine. “Still alive,” Francis quipped. “Even though some wanted me dead.

The comment was a reflection of the intense interest in the pope’s health, and the speculation about what would happen if he were to fail, that always
accompanies a pontiff but is perhaps more acute with a pope who has attracted vocal opposition from part of the church. After his 10-day hospital stay, Italian media began speculating that Francis might resign and pointed out the need for norms to regulate a second retired pope. Francis has previously said resigning “didn’t even cross my mind.”
Francis was also asked about how he deals with divisions and with people who view him with suspicion. It was a reference to Catholic conservatives who have long criticised Francis’ critiques of capitalism and his focus on the environment and migrants. Their criticism turned to outrage after Francis in July cracked down on the celebration of the old Latin
Mass. Francis reversed Emeritus Benedict XVI and re-imposed restrictions on celebrating the old rite, saying the move was necessary because the Latin Mass had become a source of division in the church and been exploited on ideological grounds. In his response, Francis referred to the Latin Mass outcry and noted that there
was a “big Catholic television station that continually speaks poorly about the pope.” He didn’t name it but it could have been a reference to the EWTN media conglomerate, which has been critical of the papacy and in particular Francis’ new restrictions on the old Latin Mass. “I personally might merit attacks and insults because I’m a sinner, but the church doesn’t deserve this; it’s the work of the devil,” he said. “Yes, there are priests even who make nasty comments about me. Sometimes I lose my patience, especially when they make judgments without entering into a real dialogue. You can’t do anything with that.” But Francis said his reaction is to just preach. “I just go forward without entering into their world of ideas and fantasies,” he said.

JESSICA CHASTAIN REDEEMS A TELEVANGELIST IN ‘TAMMY FAYE’ By JAKE COYLE AP Film Writer
NEW YORK (AP) — In the nearly 10 years it took for Jessica Chastain to get made a film about the Christian televangelist Tammy Faye Messner, she studied many of the kinds of things you'd expect — the hours of television footage, Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato’s 2000 documentary. But one of the most revelatory sources was a largely forgotten WB reality show from 2002. By then, Messner had fallen from the heights of her televangelist fame after scandals brought down the multimillion-dollar ministry she and her longtime husband, Jim Bakker, built with the PTL ("Praise the Lord") Network. So there she was on “The Surreal Life" alongside D-list celebrities like Vanilla Ice and adult film star Ron Jeremy, living in a Hollywood Hills mansion for two weeks. “You’re thinking: What is this? I know they put her in there because they thought it would create a lot of drama. But it was a beautiful thing to watch," says Chastain. “You saw her consistently being who she was, not judging anyone, but ministering to them.” To Chastain, what stood out was Messner's steadiness of faith. Even Vanilla Ice. He later wrote a song about her. “She just loved everyone, and she loved without judgment and she believed everyone was deserving of God’s grace,” Chastain said in a recent interview. “Now I wasn’t baptized. But I think that’s supposed to be what Christianity is about.” In “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” directed by Michael Showalter,
which Searchlight Pictures releases in theaters Friday, Chastain gives perhaps the most ambitious performance of her career so far. For the widely admired actor of “The Tree of Life,” “Zero Dark Thirty" and “The Help,” it's the first time she's tackled a decades-spanning biopic with all the transformational trappings — the makeup, the prosthetics, the accent. It's a big swing, one Chastain was hungry for. “There were a number of reasons I wanted to do it,” says Chastain, who acquired the rights to adapt the documentary in 2012. “But number one was it was

the scariest because it’s the most far-reaching.” It was during the press tour for 2012's “Zero Dark Thirty” that Chastain first caught the RuPaul-narrated doc on TV. At the time, it seemed like the furthest thing from her CIA operative in Kathryn Bigelow's film. The documentary, while revelling in the kitsch of the Bakkers, sought to celebrate the much-parodied Messner, who died in 2007 at the age of 65. At its most popular, “The PTL Club,” their flagship programme, reached as many as 13 million households. Constant appeals for donations from viewers helped swell their ministry,
including Heritage USA, a Disney-style theme park and resort in South Carolina. But sex and financial scandal toppled their empire. Bakker (played by Andrew Garfield in the film) used ministry funds to pay a woman who said Bakker sexually assaulted her. (Bakker denied it.) He was convicted in 1989 of raising pledges with false promises while also steering millions to pay for the couple's lavish lifestyle. Messner, who filed for divorce while Bakker was imprisoned, was never indicted. But she took more lumps in public opinion. She was mocked on
“Saturday Night Live.” Chastain recognized a complicated woman who was treated unfairly. “I knew it was important for me in terms of gender, in terms of righting a wrong that I felt the media had done to her," Chastain says. “We all had a collective memory that wasn’t accurate, including myself." The film spans three decades and some very drastic fluctuations in period style. That made it a particular challenge to make-up department head Linda Dowds, not just in charting Messner's physical evolution, but keeping the extravagant looks from being too over-the-top.
A POSSIBLE INSPIRATION FOR THE BIBLICAL STORY OF SODOM? - A GIANT SPACE ROCK DEMOLISHED AN ANCIENT MIDDLE EASTERN CITY AND EVERYONE IN IT By Christopher R Moore ARCHAEOLOGIST and Special Projects Director at the Savannah River Archaeological Research Programme and South Carolina Institute for Archaeology and Anthropology, University of South Carolina (THE CONVERSATION) - As the inhabitants of an ancient Middle Eastern city now called Tall el-Hammam went about their daily business one day about 3,600 years ago, they had no idea an unseen icy space rock was speeding toward them at about 38,000 mph. Flashing through the atmosphere, the rock exploded in a massive fireball about 2.5 miles above the ground. The blast was around 1,000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima atomic bomb. The shocked city dwellers who stared at it were blinded instantly. Air temperatures rapidly rose above 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit. Clothing and wood immediately burst into flames. Swords, spears, mudbricks and pottery began to melt. Almost immediately, the entire city was on fire. Some seconds later, a massive shockwave smashed into the city. Moving at about 740 mph, it was more powerful than the worst tornado ever recorded. The deadly winds ripped through the city, demolishing every building. They sheared off the top 40 feet of the four-storey palace and blew the jumbled debris into the next valley. None of the 8,000 people or any animals within the city survived – their bodies were torn apart, and their bones blasted into small fragments. About a minute later, 14 miles to the west of Tall elHammam, winds from the blast hit the biblical city of Jericho. Jericho’s walls came tumbling down and the city burned to the ground. It all sounds like the climax of an edge-of-yourseat Hollywood disaster movie. How do we know that all of this actually happened near the Dead Sea in Jordan millennia ago? Getting answers required nearly 15 years of painstaking excavations by hundreds of people. It also involved detailed analyses of excavated material by
more than two dozen scientists in 10 states in the US, as well as Canada and the Czech Republic. When our group finally published the evidence recently in the journal Scientific Reports, the 21 co-authors included archaeologists, geologists, geochemists, geomorphologists, mineralogists, paleobotanists, sedimentologists, cosmicimpact experts and medical doctors. Here’s how we built up this picture of devastation in the past.
Firestorm throughout the city Years ago, when archaeologists looked out over excavations of the ruined city, they could see a dark, roughly five-foot-thick jumbled layer of charcoal, ash, melted mudbricks and melted pottery. It was obvious that an intense firestorm had destroyed this city long ago. This dark band came to be called the destruction layer. No one was exactly sure what had happened, but that layer wasn’t caused by a volcano, earthquake or warfare. None of them are

To figure out what could, our group used the Online Impact Calculator to model scenarios that fit the evidence. Built by impact experts, this calculator allows researchers to estimate the many details of a cosmic impact event, based on known impact events and nuclear detonations. It appears that the culprit at Tall el-Hammam was a small asteroid similar to the one that knocked down 80
million trees in Tunguska, Russia in 1908. It would have been a much smaller version of the giant mileswide rock that pushed the dinosaurs into extinction 65 million ago. We had a likely culprit. Now we needed proof of what happened that day at Tall el-Hammam.
Finding ‘diamonds’ in the dirt Our research revealed a remarkably broad array of evidence.
At the site, there are finely fractured sand grains called shocked quartz that only form at 725,000 pounds per square inch of pressure (five gigapascals) – imagine six 68-ton Abrams military tanks stacked on your thumb. The destruction layer also contains tiny diamonoids that, as the name indicates, are as hard as diamonds. Each one is smaller than a flu virus. It appears that wood and plants in the area were instantly turned into this diamond-like material by the fireball’s high pressures and temperatures. Experiments with laboratory furnaces showed that the bubbled pottery and mudbricks at Tall elHammam liquefied at temperatures above 2,700 F. That’s hot enough to melt an automobile within minutes. The destruction layer also contains tiny balls of melted material smaller than airborne dust particles. Called spherules, they are made of vaporized iron and sand that melted at about 2,900 F. In addition, the surfaces of the pottery and meltglass are speckled with
tiny melted metallic grains, including iridium with a melting point of 4,435 F, platinum that melts at 3,215 F and zirconium silicate at 2,800 F. Together, all this evidence shows that temperatures in the city rose higher than those of volcanoes, warfare and normal city fires. The only natural process left is a cosmic impact. The same evidence is found at known impact sites, such as Tunguska and the Chicxulub crater, created by the asteroid that triggered the dinosaur extinction. One remaining puzzle is why the city and over 100 other area settlements were abandoned for several centuries after this devastation. It may be that high levels of salt deposited during the impact event made it impossible to grow crops. We’re not certain yet, but we think the explosion may have vaporised or splashed toxic levels of Dead Sea salt water across the valley. Without crops, no one could live in the valley for up to 600 years, until the minimal rainfall in this desert-like climate washed the salt out of the fields.
