T

he D’Aguilar Art Foundation’s new show, “pARTicipate!”, aims to highlight the playfulness and accessibility of art. The exhibition intends to be a medium by which children – and child-like adults – can learn to appreciate performative artworks of all kinds: from singing sculptures to a painting you can walk into.

The show features five prominent Bahamian artists: June Collie, John Cox, Kendra Frorup, Natascha Vazquez and Margot Bethel. Each artist created a piece of interactive artwork surrounding themes of play, folklore and storytelling. Each piece

displayed encourages the viewer to participate physically with the artwork and become a part of the piece’s story.

Here are the ways each artist does this:

June Collie ‘Dollhouse’ expands June Collie’s well-known murals in an installation that explores the internal architecture of her paintings. The piece encourages the viewer to interact with the home she has created.

John Cox Mr Cox’s wearable sculpture ‘Blessed Redeemer’ is a homage to his mother, who would use this phrase as a form of sigh. It perches on your

shoulders in the same way a Junkanoo costume would, transforming the wearer into a superhero (like his mother).

Kendra Frorup Kendra Froup’s assemblages of beading, straw work and prints responds to your movement with sound and light. She draws from a multi-media practice that explores the iconography of Caribbean Life.

Natascha Vazquez Ms Vazquez’s six paintings all explore the story of the Lusca, a monster resembling an octopus that resides

in blue holes around the Bahamas, in bold, colourful ways.

Margot Bethel Ms Bethel’s installation is inspired by folk storytelling through music.

Her instruments create sounds with indigenous seeds in recycled containers explores the connection between music and nature.

interview The Olympic champion talks to Cara Hunt about how marriage has changed her perspective on life, how she has hopes for a big family and how, like the rest of us, she has trouble resisting chocolate and a good ‘Game of Thrones’ binge-watch.

The couple are currently enjoying being parents – dog parents, that is – since the arrival of the two newest members of the MillerUibo family.

“We did get two dogs, a male and female pair of German Shepherds. Their names are Taavi and Amina. I wanted to name them after kings and queens, and Taavi is Estonian for David and Amina is the Hausa warrior queen of Zazzau. At the moment they are still in training and obedience classes.”

Shaunae said she most definitely wants to add to her family.

“I would love to have children one day...maybe five,” she said.

And while she won’t mind if her future kids don’t become track and field athletes, she is adamant that any children of hers will all do some type of sports. “Particularly if it can get them scholarships,” she joked.

Shaunae herself comes from a large, athletic family. Her father, Shaun Miller Sr, is a coach. Her mother, Mae, has worked for the the Bahamas Amateur Athletic Association. Her siblings, Shauntice, Shaunece and Shaun Jr, are also doing extremely well at their levels of track and field.

“We are extremely competitive, both at meets and with each other,” she said of her siblings. “When we get together it can be the most simple thing, but we will find a

ou’d think that after winning gold at the Olympics, the bronze and silver at the lAAF World Championships, the Diamond Championship League trophy, and of course winning the hearts of Bahamians everywhere, Shaunae Miller-Uibo might consider hanging up her spikes.

However, the 400m and 200m sprinter says she still has a long way to go before she reaches her ultimate goal: to become the very best in her field. And next up is one of her biggest challenges: defending her first-place win in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Tribune Weekend was able to catch up with Shaunae during her trip back home this week for a somewhat more personal interview, with the woman behind the athlete, so to speak.

Being in Nassau gave the 24-year-old a chance to eat the local cuisine she loves so much.

“I do love some conch. I always brag about conch when I am away...and some peas n’ rice, really any home-cooked meal. I can cook, but I am by no means a chef. I cook enough to survive, so it’s nice to come home and eat,” she said.

Taking a break from training also allowed her to indulge in her favourite sweet treat: chocolate.

“I am a huge chocolate lover, but I try not to eat it when I am in training, so every time I am on a break I use that time to indulge.”

Another thing she does when she has time between meets and other events is binge-watch her favourite shows.

“I am a huge TV fan,” she said. “Recently, I just finished watching seven seasons of ‘Game of Thrones’, which I absolutely loved. I remember it took me about three weeks to finish watching it. I was staying up all night until 3am, but I ended up being so tired for practice, but there was no way I could tell coach that I couldn’t make practice because I was watching TV. “I prefer to binge-watch because I am a bit impatient. I need to know what happens immediately and so I usually wait until I can watch at least a few seasons at a time. Except for ‘Power’ (starring Omari Hardwick)...I can’t wait for ‘Power’; I have to watch that in real time,” she said.

Shaunae’s husband, Estonian decathlete Maicel Uibo, was also in Nassau for the visit. The former University of Georgia college sweethearts married in a lavish ceremony at Atlantis last February. Since then, the pair have been enjoying married life and the mixing of their cultures.

“Marriage has definitely changed my perspective on a lot of things. We have really enjoyed being married and being a partnership, and learning about each other’s countries. We both have a lot of a respect for each other’s cultures,” she said. “In fact, Maicel is like a Bahamian now. He comes here a lot and

way to say, ‘I’m better at it!’ ‘No, I am better at it!’. But we are a very close loving family.”

Her siblings are also always on hand to cheer each other on when possible.

Her younger, sister Shauntae, competed in the Miss Bahamas Universe Pageant, which celebrated its finale just last weekend.

She tied for first runner-up and Shaunae said she was extremely proud of her little sister.

“She just looked so amazing and I want to see how far she goes,” she said.

Shaunae’s schedule will be extremely busy over the next two years in the lead-up to both the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar, and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, where she will have to defend her title.

The trips to these faraway countries will help her rack up more frequent flyer miles as she continues travelling all over the world.

“I had to get to used to flying even though my dad was a pilot.

There was a time that I used to be really afraid of flying, like I had to sit near the window so I could see the take-off and the landing, and I would analyse the flight attendants’ faces to see if they looked afraid, but now I have gotten used to it,” she said.

While she has run track in many different places, Shaunae often only sees the hotel and the route to and from the stadium, which is why whenever she can travel for vacation it is always a special time for her.

“One place that I really want to go is Rome,” she said. “It’s somewhere I have never been, and although I was supposed to compete there several times, something always came up, like an injury or something. But I really want to go exploring there.

I think it would be a really romantic trip.”

The sprinter said she listens to gospel music to get in the right frame of mind for competitions, but that she doesn’t have any other pre-race rituals.

“I don’t really do anything, just try to stay calm and focused, and when I step on the track I say a little prayer that I can accept whatever the outcome of the race is,” she said.

“My dream is to be the best that I can be with the help of God. Honestly, the medals don’t phase me, although when you are the best, of course the medals will come. But I don’t feel that I have reached that point in my career where I am ready to retire. I still have more to accomplish to become the greatest of all time,” she said.

“I always said that I’d probably retire when I get around 30. Track is very hard on the body, so who knows. I do get tired. The workouts never get easier and our workouts are very intense.”

While the medals may not be her end goal, she has certainly amassed quite the collection.

Her most recent trophy came last month after she won the 200m race at the International Amateur Athletic Federation’s AG Memorial Diamond League in Belgium.

However, not every meet, not every major competition can result in a place on the podium.

particularly when she knows she may not have done her best.

“My dad told me a long time ago that in track and field you have good days and bad days, but you just have to keep fighting no matter what.”

And speaking of fighting, Shaunae also addressed the current debate about sexism in athletics, particularly in the aftermath of the Serena Williams US Open drama, where the tennis star alleged she had been treated unfairly due to her gender.

Shaunae said she is proud of the strides her sport has made in regards to equal treatment of men and women.

“It is definitely an issue that is of concern, but in track and field they are working to ensure that there is equal pay and that the spotlight is on both the male and females,” she said.

“For example, track meets always used to end with the men’s relays and now they are changing it up to put the women at the end, so they have done good things, but there is still a long way to go.”

Bahamas, get ready for ‘plogging’!

F

itness expert and personal trainer Regina Smith is bringing a new eco-friendly exercise craze called “plogging” to Bahamian shores.

Originating in Sweden, plogging is a combination of the word ‘jogging’ and the Swedish “plocka upp”, meaning to pick up. In this case, litter.

The idea behind the concept, which is catching on around the globe, is that running is good for the body and picking up garbage is good for the planet, so why not combine the two?

“It’s a great way to get in a good workout and do something good for the environment,” said Regina, a regular Tribune Weekend contributor.

She is organising Nassau’s first plogging outing for this Saturday at 6am.

Participants will set out from Fort Montagu, head to Rawson Square, and then return to Montagu Beach.

When asked what inspired her to launch an event of this nature in the Bahamas, Regina said: “I love my country and I love to run. As a half marathoner I spend a lot of time training outdoors. I’ve noticed a lot of trash out and about on my runs. We live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. I don’t want that overrun with garbage.”

She believes every Bahamian should do their part in ensuring the environment is pristine and beautiful.

“Waste management and the government will do their part, but at some point as citizens we have a personal responsibility to take pride in our country and not throw trash out or to pick up and clean up litter when we can. I would plogg on my own and post it on my social media platforms and I would get a lot of support from followers. So as I started getting traction and

attention and I saw other walkers and runners joining my efforts. I thought it would be a great idea if we all came together and cleaned up an area that was frequently used by pet walkers, walkers, joggers and runners,” she said.

Two main things Regina hopes to accomplish with the launch this event are environmental awareness and national pride.

“I would like for people to plogg all the time moving forward, but I would

also like this to be an annual event where and fitness enthusiasts and the fitness community comes together to do something good for the planet,” she said.

Saturday’s plogging is open to participants of all fitness levels. Gloves, hand sanitiser, garbage bags and water will be provided for free, but donations are also welcome. For more information, check out the Facebook page ‘Energy Fitness Bahamas’.

Repeat visitors treated to Government House visit IN an effort to reward repeat visitors to Superclub Breezes, the Cable Beach property recently gave scores of its guests a unique experience at Government House.

Through the Ministry of Tourism and Aviation’s People-to-People programme, the guests were able to enjoy some Bahamian delights at a tea party which also featured live entertainment and a fashion show.

Director of Entertainment at Superclub Breezes Carlton McPhee said it was a way to give back to their guests.

“We have an unbelievable amount of repeats. So three years ago, we decided to show our appreciation. The best way to do that is to come to Government House,” he said. “The feedback has been wonderful. Half of the group has been here before and they sign up for the tour again.”

The tour also includes sightseeing in New Providence with a drive through East Street, Blue Hill Road and West Bay Street. The repeat guests were also

treated to a tour of Graycliff Resort, a snorkelling excursion and an all-white beach party.

Visitors like Judy Stricklen from Lexington, Kentucky, and Roman Mitz from Toronto, Canada, said they have fallen in love with the destination.

“I love the ocean, but more than that I love the Bahamian people,” said Ms Stricklen. “They are so loving and warm and their arms are always open for whatever we need. To me, coming to Government House is like going to see the President of the United States.”

“I love the people. I always get treated so well here,” said Mr Mitz. “My wife and I love it. We plan on coming back forever.

Government House is a different experience and it’s great getting some of the culture and the history of the Bahamas. It makes me love it here even more.”

Officials say they plan to make the Government House tour a part of their yearly schedule along with other tours.

or Bahamians in particular, it seems like travelling abroad often brings with it more stress than relaxation. After all, we’re usually trying to squeeze a year’s worth of shopping and other experiences into the span of just a few short days.

Enter the staycation. What’s a staycation, you may ask? Well, it’s a vacation experience that has become extremely popular in recent years – a holiday spent on home soil. And when that home is the Bahamas, you get all the sun, sand and sea that people from all around the world journey thousands of miles to experience, but which we as locals sometimes neglect.

One the newest venues in New Providence to enjoy staycation is the SLS Baha Mar resort, which is currently offering Bahamian residents a special “Stay Local Sweetie” rate per night.

“Live like a king”, is the motto behind this special package which

features free valet parking, upgrades and discounts at restaurants and bars.

Last weekend, I got the chance to try out this brand of staycation for myself.

After checking in on Friday afternoon, I was welcomed with a drink, a tasty fruit punch. Then, to ensure I didn’t get lost on the rather vast property, I was given a map and a list of 10 events and activities to explore. I immediately felt as if I had left the island and was enjoying a luxury getaway at some faraway destination.

“Life gets busy, and sometimes we forget to take the time out for ourselves. As soon as I entered my suite, all decked out in white, I thought, ‘Yes, this is the luxury life!’ But you’re also made to feel right at home, thanks to some small personalised touches, like your name displayed on the television’s welcome screen.

Once you’re settled in, it’s time to make your way back down to the lobby

where you find the Monkey Bar (try the sbe’s signature Jasmine margarita to set the tone for your weekend).

If you feel like enjoying some afternoon sun, you can head on over to the SLS signature bungalow pool bar and grill to lounge poolside and enjoy the service of a dedicated concierge while you indulge in cocktails and some light fare. You may even see a few celebrities walk by.

Italian fare at Fi’lia can take a stroll to meet the turtles, sharks and stingrays. Take a little time to feed the turtles before heading up to your suite to get ready for the evening, which is when SLS really comes alive.

As much as I wanted to have a taste of each, for the first night I decided to dine at Cleo, where I enjoyed the must-have Wagyu New York steak, garlic shrimp and roasted potatoes.

The recommendation by my sociable attendant Avens to try the flourless chocolate cake sealed the deal for the me and made Cleo my new favourite restaurant. Jorgge Colon, executive chef at CLEO, said their concept of allowing waiters or chefs to suggest dishes to guests is fun and creative.

But the night doesn’t end with dinner. Now it’s time to enjoy the party atmosphere at the Bond nightclub.

Nick Gold, director of marketing, nightlife and food and beverage at the SLS, describes Bond as an escape from everyday life, ideal for unwinding and lowering your inhibitions. The 10,000-square foot venue provides a lush interior, state-of-the-art sound system and DJ booth. Guests can enjoy custom mixology, full-service bars, or table-side bottle services. The space can accommodate over 725 guests. Mr Gold said he enjoys the nightclub’s ability to bring together people from all walks of life and countries to have one great, big party.

Following a long night of dancing, mingling and cocktails, a Saturday morning lie-in is in order, which is absolutely OK; you’re on vacation after all. However, if you are hungry, head back down to Cleo for a complimentary breakfast. During my stay, I was welcomed by attentive staff members like Shanae Fernander. You have your choice of fruits and fibre, steak and eggs, omelettes, avocado toast,

or the more adventurous chia pudding parfait, ricotta pancakes, smoked salmon croissant sandwich and more.

At this point you can either go up to your room to relax in the pleasant surroundings and enjoy the luxurious amenities, or, if you’re more like me, you can check out what’s happening at the Privilege Pool day party. Privilege provides a sense of playful decadence, serving signature cocktails and light fare by your own dedicated pool concierge. In the words of Mr Gold: “Not everyone wants to party after dark, and having the ability to offer great cocktails and music while still being able to work on your tan is a great option to have.”

After a relaxing day at the pool, I chose Fi’lia as my dining option for

my second night. The sharing concept at the restaurant allows friends, families and couples to comfortably dine together. Dishes are placed in the centre of the table for all to enjoy.

The Fi’lia menu features dishes that highlight fresh, seasonal ingredients, house-made pasta and memorable signature creations like the table-side Caesar salad.

It was the perfect way to cap off my weekend staycation at SLS Baha Mar before saying goodbye, at least for now, on Sunday morning.

Bahamian residents interested in taking advantage of special deals are advised to bring a valid Bahamian ID which must be presented upon arrival.

Complimentary valet parking is limited to one vehicle per reservation.

ROOVY soca performer Kees Dieffenthaller and his popular group Kes The Band will say “Hello” to Bahamian fans during next week’s President Summer concert.

The concert is being held in conjunction with Fresh Entertainment and will take place on September 29 in Pompey Square beginning at 8.30pm.

Kes will be joined on stage by local fan favourites Wendi Lewis and Dyson Knight, who are known for the highlevel energy they bring to any event.

The concert will also feature some of Nassau’s hottest DJs. Presidente Summer is a promotion campaign taking place around the Caribbean that features some of the region’s top acts.

According to Africa Allah, public relations officer of Fresh Entertainment, it was a no-brainer for their production company to team up with Presidente.

The company, she said, is always looking to expand its brand in other markets. Not to mention, Kes is one of the hottest soca groups right now. Africa said she is confident Kes will put on a performance to remember.

The band is a Caribbean soca music/pop music group formed in 2005 and known for their unique blend of soulful vocals, calypso-inspired melodies, rock music riffs and island beats, with hints of reggae.

Kes’ style has elevated them to mainstream popularity, allowing Kes to become a household name in Trinidad and Tobago and throughout the Caribbean circuit.

Their breakout hit, ‘Hello’, was one of the few soca videos to hit over a 10 million views in less than a month.

As for the what is next on the Fresh Entertainment agenda, Africa said: “We will be back with our fall Fresh Live series and our Unwrapped Hip Hop concert that will make its second appearance December 2018.”

No men allowed at Breezes party for ‘grown and sexy’ women

here will be absolutely no men are allowed at tomorrow’s Girls Night Out, as it will be a party only for ladies who are craving a night filled with adult-appropriate fun.

The event is being presented by Buttons Formal Wear, organisers of the popular Bahamas Bridal Show, and will be held this Saturday at Breezes Resort from 7.30pm to 10.30pm.

Makeva Wallace, who has coordinated the Bahamas Bridal Show for more than a decade, decided to launch Girls Night Out five years ago to establish an event where women can unwind and be free while having ‘grown folks’ fun.

“A few years ago I spent some time out of the country on business. From time to time I would come home and want to see my friends. But there was no where for us to go that was safe or where we wouldn’t be hit on by men.

So we would just gather at someone’s house, eat, drink and be merry,” she told Tribune Weekend.

“During one of my visits home, after leaving a social at one of my friends’ house, I lay in bed at three in the morning desiring more. I said there must be other women out there that have the same issue.”

Makeva said what was also important to her was having a fun place that was not only pleasant, but safe.

“I thought about the type of environment I want for me and my friends.

on them, talk girl talk, trade secrets on how to keep the fire burning at home, dance, have a cocktail, and all with no worries of drunken or forward men drooling over us,” she said.

The the idea for an all-women’s event was born.

“We decided to add a feature most women like: shopping. We invited vendors to have the exclusive right to feature their products. The latest in fashion, jewellery, make-up, hair and beauty products, shoes, lingerie and novelties,” she said.

Participating vendors in the upcoming Girls Night Out include the Eye Candy Make Up Company, Shoe Maxx, Vixen’s Lair, Dazzle Events, Madistic Photography and Bristol Wines and Spirits, who will be featuring their Sapphire Boombay Gin and Patron XO. During the event, guests will have the opportunity to walk away with over $3,000 in prizes, one of which is a seven-night stay at a five-star resort in Las Vegas, Orlando or Canada.

“We have watched our event grow from 80 women in the initial year to

When asked about the strict nomale policy, Makeva said women need their time and space to escape.

An office party relocates to Girls Night Out. “In most cases, men go out all the time to clubs, parties and sporting events and leave the women home to mind house and family. And while we strongly believe in this duty, we also believe that we should have our time to get away,” she said.

“During the three-hour, closed-door event, women get to be themselves, without fear of judgement or being recorded. So shhh.... if you don’t tell, we won’t. It’s Girls Night Out.” Tickets for tomorrow’s event are $30 and can be purchased from Buttons Formal Wear in Cable Beach.

A shimmering night for a

good cause

AHAMIANS are invited to come out and “Shimmer” at the 25th annual Red Ribbon Ball this November. This event is the AIDS Foundation’s premier fundraiser, contributing significantly to its ongoing mission to support the fight against HIV/AIDS in the Bahamas.

The black-tie affair is slated for November 17 in the Grand Ballroom at Atlantis. Cocktails begin at 7pm and the main event kicks off at 8pm.

Guests will be treated to a luxurious evening inclusive of an fine dining experience, great music, and prizes.

Lady Camille Barnett, president of the AIDS Foundation, encouraged the general public to support the organisation’s efforts by following this year’s gala theme, “Shimmer”, and stepping out in their best attire.

As is the case every year, there will be prizes and surprises for those attending.

The foundation not only survives, but thrives from the proceeds of the event that go towards its various community initiatives and programmes.

Lady Barnett said the upcoming Red Ribbon Ball will provide financial support to life-saving work that the foundation is doing, which includes education and increasing awareness of HIV/AIDS, support and advocacy for those living with HIV/AIDS, training and research to assist in the fight against the disease.

“As the major fundraising for the AIDS Foundation, the ball is vital to our very existence. All of the funds raised from the ball go back into the activities of the foundation, including our outreach programme for children, the purchase of medication, education, awareness, prevention activities and our provision of support for persons living with HIV/AIDS,” she said.

The Red Ribbon Ball is always one of the highlight’s on Nassau’s social calendar.

Over the last year, the foundation has been able to hire a part-time case worker and a parttime clinical psychologist to further enhance the psychosocial component of its outreach programme.

“We are proud of our kids who are pursuing tertiary level education and holding down jobs. We hope to motivate the remainder of our students to succeed in BJCs and BGCSEs,” she said.

But the foundation depends on the generosity and support of the public for events like the Red Ribbon Ball in order to carry out its work.

“We have unfortunately outgrown our space and need to secure more classroom and private counselling spaces. We need to find more job opportunities and work experiences for our adolescence, as well as more trained teachers to assist with tutoring.

We also need more volunteers to assist with fundraising, programme implementation, membership and social media outreach,” she said.

It just looks a bit old-fashioned and uninspiring. I do like her hair and makeup though.”

Cara says: “OK, this is a lot of shine.

I always say getting the gold lamé trend right is hard. It looks like a dress Alexis Carrington Colby would wear on Dynasty back in the 1980s.

But also, the fit is just bad; it looks too big.”

Karin says: “OMG I didn’t even recognise her at first. That wig is horrendous! A bob just does not suit her. As for the dress...nope. Hate the slit in the middle; it doesn’t look like it fits all that well (especially in the shoulders), and I hate the necklace and the fact that it’s a different shade of blue.”

Cara says: “Oh Tiffany, this wig makes you look so old. You look like a desperate housewife trying to convince yourself you still got it.

The overall look is too matronly and boring for you, hun.”

Karin says: “It seems like ‘simple’ was the dress code for winners this year.

It’s a very straight-forward design by Brandon Maxwell, but what makes it stand out is the bubblegum hue.

It’s fun and attention-grabbing. And apparently it was custom-made for her.”

Cara says: “This is another simple yet effective fluid dress. It’s actually really nice and looks great on her. I like that it’s a colour that you don’t see too often. I really enjoyed the pops of colour on the red carpet this year.”

Karin says: “The problem with this is that the prettiest part of the dress is the back...seriously, look it up online.

But the front, which most people will see, is extremely plain, and frankly, boring. It’s just a white satin sheath dress. Disappointing.”

Cara says: “I absolutely adore Claire Foy and she was brilliant in ‘The Crown’. And I also absolutely hate this dress. It reminds me of the gorgeous white Carolina Herrera dress that Renee Zellweger wore at the Oscars a few years back, but Claire’s dress is much too short and the fit is way off; looks more like a bath towel.”

Karin says: “I’m sure it’s intentional, but it just looks a bit sloppy the way the one strap appears to have just slipped down (I know it’s probably sewn that way). Which is a shame really, because the red is gorgeous on her.”

Cara says: “The shoulder on this dress is really distracting. I’m sure people just wanted to just pull it up for her.

I’m OK with the colour and the fabric, but overall not that impressed.”

Karin says: “Ooh, that is very bright!

And while I applaud her for going with something other than the usual black, white, blue or red, I’m just not a big fan of chartreuse. Neon colours somehow look weird at fancy red carpet events. But the cut of the dress is nice.”

Cara says: “This bright colour was a trend this year. I love the simplicity and fluidity of the dress, and I think it looks quite lovely on her. I have no objections to chartreuse if done right, like here.”

Review: ‘The Guilty Dead’ has fast-paced story line

I

n P J Tracy’s “The Guilty Dead,” a young man battles addiction and when he finally decides he’s going to clean himself up after one last binge, he meets his maker courtesy of the dealer who supplied the extra-deadly drugs.

Though it was murder, the official determination by authorities is an accidental overdose. On the one-year anniversary of his death, the young man’s father, prominent businessman Gregory Norwood, still grieves, and he’s soon found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

His immediate family doesn’t believe he would kill himself, and Minneapolis detective Leo Magozzi sees too many inconsistencies at the scene. He knows in his gut that it’s murder, which leads him to question the overdose of his son a year earlier.

In addition, Magozzi soon learns from his allies at the company Monkeewrench Software that a possible terrorist attack is imminent

somewhere in downtown Minneapolis.

How does the death of Norwood and his son tie into this bold plot, and if they are related, can it be stopped in time?

P J Tracy has been the pseudonym for the mother-daughter writing team of P J and Traci Lambrecht for the previous novels in the Monkeewrench series. P J died in December 2016, and Traci has continued the tradition of well-crafted and tense stories with this fun cast of characters. The mystery behind the deaths along with the fastpaced story line about capturing the killer and stopping a plan that could kill hundreds of people guarantees an engrossing read. Those who haven’t found the pleasure of stories involving the Monkeewrench gang can easily jump-start with this one, and those who enjoy a mix of the cozy mystery and an intense thriller will enjoy as well.

‘Tear Me Apart’ by J T Ellison is gut-wrenching thriller “Tear Me Apart,” J T Ellison’s latest gut-wrenching thriller, asks the question: How far would a parent go to save the life of a child?

Mindy Wright has a shot at being a top skier. During a critical race, she hits a spot near a flag incorrectly and ends up face down in the snow with a broken leg. Doctors insert a pin in the leg but discover something far worse when performing the surgery: she has leukaemia and needs a stem cell transplant.

Her parents take the test, but data shows they have no genetic markers that match with her. The revelation that they have been hiding the truth hurts Mindy almost as much as her fractured leg. And to stay alive, she needs to find her birth parents to determine if they can provide the stem cells she needs.

Of course, it isn’t as simple as tracking

down the people who organised the adoption or looking up names on the internet.

Lauren, who considers herself Mindy’s mother, had her reasons for keeping the truth from Mindy. Exposing the facts behind the deception might save her daughter’s life, but at what cost?

The author crafts a compelling mystery that slowly unravels like a spool of frazzled yarn, leaving both the characters and readers emotionally spent. A quarter of the way into the story, a new character is introduced that throws everything into turmoil in a significant way.

Dark secrets and how they can destroy a loving family carry this tale to a startling ending.

‘Summer Madness’ carries on in the spirit of James Catalyn

“T

here are no new elements to the show; we kept everything as he would wish them to be,” said ‘Summer Madness’ director Sony JeanJacques as he spoke about this year’s revue in the wake of James Catalyn’s passing.

The celebrated playwright, poet and actor James Catalyn died on Saturday, August 18, prompting an outpouring of sympathy and accolades from the cultural community. Catalyn was 78.

His theatre troupe, James Catalyn and Friends, has been making an impact on the arts scene in the Bahamas for the more than three decades. They have performed on every major or minor stage throughout the islands, including several garden performances, performing at private affairs and staging outdoor theatre at many festivals and homecomings.

The group has thrilled audiences at the Dundas with their annual ‘Summer Madness’ revues for the past 35 consecutive years, with last weekend’s show being their 36th year.

This latest revue proved to be just hilarious and thought-provoking as past shows by taking a satirical look at “typical, topical and timely topics” in Bahamian life.

“Knowing that James is no longer here in person is always a tearful moment. Fortunately, we have an amazing cast; a cast who knows and understands the standard that James would have implemented and followed. Additionally, the

“In 2000, I was working at the box office at the Dundas and was introduced to James

by Omar Williams. In addition to working the box office, and prior to leaving for university, I also spent several productions working the theatre’s front of house. Needless to say, when I returned home from university, James threw me on stage and said: ‘No more box office for you,’ and the rest is history. James was more than a mentor, he was like my father,” said Mr Jean-Jaques.

Throughout the years, Mr Catalyn continued to shape the performing arts in the Bahamas, encouraging a new generation of Bahamians to follow in his footsteps. He has taken many young people interested in directing under his wing. As the group seeks to maintain the legacy of its mentor, over the years other aspiring writers have been encouraged and their works performed as a part of one of the ‘Summer Madness’ revues.

Mr Jean-Jaques said all of the skits in this year’s revue were chosen by Mr Catalyn and were some of his favourites.

“When he asked me, or shall I say told me, that I was directing, I told him that I would like to dedicate this show to him and so we went through the catalogue of skits, choosing the ones he liked most. He would say, ‘Look for this’ or ‘look for that and if you can’t find that ....we can do this one.’ None of the skits were updated or edited. They were intentionally left in their original text,” he said.

Spicy to the taste and attractive for the eyes, Jack Hardy pays tribute to one of the most versatile vegetables.

A

healthy crookneck squash plant laying out its wares at its feet; thickstemmed broccoli head billowing like a thundercloud; beanstalks laden with long and luscious pods, a cheerful patch of multi-coloured chard. These are wondrous sights in the garden, but I think peppers are the prettiest and most photogenic of our vegetable produce and tend to be the ones taking pride of place in pots on a patio.

Peppers are one of three major vegetables that originate in the northern foothills of the Andes, the other two being tomatoes and potatoes. Although all three are now grown world-wide the fastest to be assimilated by other cultures was pepper, particularly hot peppers. Cuisines of India, Asia and Africa are particularly noted for their adoption of hot peppers as a seasoning. China is by far the world’s largest producer of hot peppers.

The heat of hot peppers is produced by a chemical compound called capsaicin in the pithy tissues of the fruit.

The seeds are embedded in this tissue and therefore absorb capsaicin. If seeds and pith are removed from hot peppers prior to culinary use their piquancy is reduced to a degree and they become cleaner to the taste buds.

All peppers cross-pollinate very easily. If you grow hot peppers in the vicinity of sweet peppers and use the seeds for propagation you will almost always notice a diminution in the strength of hot peppers. It is interesting to note, however, that bird peppers seem more resistant to flavour loss than larger hot peppers.

The world’s most popular hot pepper is the jalapeno, originally from Mexico and now produced globally. It is a very easy pepper to grow and has a tremendous range of heat from capsaicin, from merely tangy and mild to very hot. Jalapenos have a distinctive flavour and are the pepper of choice for most hot pepper jellies.

Here in the Bahamas we rejoice in the diminutive bird pepper and it fits

most of our culinary needs. A bird pepper plant can grow into a small shrub and be productive for years if it is picked clean of fruits regularly and care is taken to remove the stalks from the plant when picking. If the fruit stalks are left in place the production of new peppers will slow and a small plant may even die.

Also popular in the Bahamas is the goat pepper, a habanero type with a very strong and distinctive taste. Cross pollination with other habanero pepper types has endangered the genetic purity of goat pepper and steps are being taken by farmers to maintain the plant’s integrity. The finest goat pepper sauce I have ever tasted is one produced on Abaco called Fire Freddy.

It has a lovely balance of heat and sweetness and the goat pepper flavour is distinctive without being overpowering. Phone 475-3226 for information.

Habanero peppers such as scotch bonnet have become popular through their use in Jamaican jerk seasoning. The plants are highly productive, easy to grow, and have adult pepper strength.

There are many varieties of hot pepper that are available to us but do

not readily fit into Bahamian cuisine.

Serrano peppers are beautiful but packed with seeds. Ancho/poblano peppers are large and impressive but seem only relevant to Mexican cuisine.

Halfway between hot and sweet peppers are the large elongated types called Anaheim. These tend to be milder than most hot peppers and are widely used for stuffing and grilling.

The classic sweet pepper is large and chunky and comes in a wide variety of colours. Most peppers start by being green then change their colour approaching maturity. A green bell pepper will eventually turn red but it is best if you want red peppers to plant a variety that turns red early.

Very popular over the past few years are small sweet peppers of jalapeno size and shape called Lunchbox that bear their seeds very close to the stalk end. That means once you have trimmed off the end by half an inch or so you are left with a seedless pepper ready to be dunked into a dip. I love these because they can be trimmed and tossed otherwise whole into soups and souses and look much better than bell pepper chunks.

Pepper seeds take substantially longer than tomato seeds to germinate, often up to three weeks. The seedlings should be transplanted to the garden or a larger pot when about four inches tall minimum. If you are a smoker wear latex gloves when handling pepper seeds, seedlings and plants or you are likely to transmit tobacco mosaic.

The distance apart of plants in rows depends on the size of the plants at maturity. Bell peppers usually require about 18 inches.

All pepper plants need good drainage and if you grow them in pots you should not use a saucer and should throw in an extra handful of perlite to the potting mix. Peppers do not like competition so the pots should be kept clear of weeds. That said, peppers often do well sown two seeds to a hole so two plants grow as one. As for all potted plants, use a slow-release fertilizer worked into the top layer of the soil. Peppers are pretty but should be harvested as soon as they are ripe.

Five new shows worth watching LOS ANGELES (AP) — There’s more new television to watch than is humanly possible. But everyone has to make a time-allocation decision in the end, and that’s what we’re here to help with.

Consider the list below a tip sheet to get you going on the fall TV season.

MURPHY BROWN The unexpected success of “Roseanne” last season (before its sudden implosion due to star Roseanne Barr) would be enough to make this revival intriguing as another onetime TV hit eager to prove its relevance.

The original CBS sitcom starring Candice Bergen as a broadcast TV news anchor and reporter was unabashedly in the middle of politics and social issues when it aired from 1988-98, including going toe-to-toe with Vice President Dan Quayle over unwed motherhood.

Creator Diane English has said it was the chance to weigh in on Trumpera politics that persuaded her to put Murphy back to work, this time on the cable news side and with a bone to pick about so-called “fake news.” She’s joined by her former colleagues including Corky (Faith Ford), Frank (Joe Regalbuto) and Miles (Grant Shaud).

The show debuts on September 27.

THE ROMANOFFS The Amazon Prime Video drama series makes the cut even without virtue of an early screening, thanks both to its pedigree and ambitions.

It was created, written, directed and produced by Matthew Weiner of “Mad Men” glory and marks his return to series TV after his Emmy-showered drama ended in 2015.

An eight-episode anthology series, “The Romanoffs” promises a kaleidoscope of tales about people who fancy themselves descendants of the royal Russian family that fell victim to revolution. The cast changes from episode to episode, starting with Marthe Keller and Aaron Eckhart in “The Violet

Miami’s disadvantaged Liberty City neighbourhood is home to a youth football programme, founded by 2 Live Crew frontman and activist Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell, that’s helped launch Antonio Brown, Teddy Bridgewater and others into NFL careers.

While the twin football controversies of kneeling and concussions play out at a distance, the series provides intimate glimpses of Liberty City Warriors players on and off the field as they pursue the distant dream of a

pro career and, more immediately, a winning season.

Their grit is impressive and touching, but it’s framed by the burdens of poverty, violence and lack of educational opportunities.

The six-episode series created and directed by Evan Rosenfeld had a powerful ally: LeBron James was among its executive producers. It debuted on September 16.

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT This comedy fits snugly into ABC’s ethnic-family folio that includes “black-ish,” ‘‘The Goldbergs” and “Fresh Off the Boat.” But the newcomer about a working-class, IrishCatholic family in the 1970s isn’t riding anyone’s coattails: It’s sharply written, charming and boasts laugh-out-loud scenes.

Created by Tim Doyle, whose background mirrors that of the fictional Clearys, “The Kids Are Alright” gives the lovingly strict parents of eight (well-cast) sons their dignity as well as foibles as they navigate parenthood in a tumultuous decade.

Mary McCormack and Michael Cudlitz are actors best known for drama but shine as mom and dad, with McCormack getting the best punchlines in the debut episode and delivering them with aplomb. A sample: “We do not have the wherewithal in this family for any of you kids to be special.” Begins October 16.

THE LITTLE DRUMMER GIRL For fans of the gripping, hugely entertaining “The Night Manager” that aired on AMC in 2016, there’s reason for celebration: executive producers of the Emmy Award-winning series based on a John le Carre novel are behind this le Carre adaptation.

The six-part miniseries stars Alexander Skarsgard (”Big Little Lies,” ‘‘True Blood”) and English actress Florence Pugh (”Lady Macbeth”) in a 1970s tale of espionage and intrigue. He’s a mystery man, she’s an actress with secrets of her own, and hovering over all is spy mastermind Kurtz (Michael Shannon, “The Shape of Water”).

As with any respectable international thriller, it was filmed on location in scenic locations including London, Prague and (bonus!) at the Acropolis and Temple of Poseidon in Athens.

The drama airs November 19-21.

It’s what got Cho on board too, who was put to the test in this role. For the most part, Cho had to act opposite only a blank computer screen and webcam.

“I don’t know how I did it, I was bumbling my way through it really,” Cho said. “It was weird, it was like acting in a black box ... Several times on set I was like, ‘Aneesh can we please stop this webcam business and let’s shoot the third act with a bunch of cameras, real cameras and pop out of it? Can we please?’”

According to Cho, Chaganty’s response to this was, “John, shut up and act.”

While the concept may have been frustrating to execute, however, the final product and story is so seamless it almost makes you forget that you’re watching a story unfold through screens.

“After I saw the movie for the first time, I (told Aneesh), ‘You have expanded the vocabulary of cinema, and that is so freaking hard to do,” Cho said.

A pirate’s life for treasured screen and stage actor Sir Christopher Ondaatje remembers the English stage and film actor who immortalised the role of Long John Silver in the 1950 film adaptation of “Treasure Island”.

W

hat people don’t always know is that long before 1950 and “Treasure Island”, Robert Newton was one of the most popular and best loved English stage and film actors.

His acting career started at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre in 1921 as assistant stage manager. He was 16 years old and had already appeared in “Captain Brassbound’s Conversion” (1920). He was then in several repertory shows before he chucked acting and went to Canada for a year to work on a cattle ranch.

Robert Newton (1905 – 1956) in his career-defining role as Long John Silver Robert Newton was born in Shaftesbury, Dorset on June 1, 1905, the son of a well-known landscape painter Algernon Newton, RA. His mother was a writer. He was educated in Lamorna near Penzance in Cornwall, then at Exeter School and St Bartholomew’s School in Newbury, Berkshire.

After his stint as a cattle rancher in Canada, Newton returned to England and appeared in several plays in the West End of London, including “Bitter Sweet” by Noel Coward, “The Letter” (a W Somerset Maugham play) with Gladys Cooper, and “The Cardboard Lover” with Tallulah Bankhead.

He became a stage star when Noel Coward cast him in his musical revue “Bitter Sweet”, which ran for over a year at Her Majesty’s Theatre, and then had Newton take over from Laurence Olivier in “Private Lives in

New York”. From 1932 to 1934 he was the manager of the Shilling Theatre in Fulham.

Alexander Korda, the film producer, put Newton under contract in 1936 and in 1937 he appeared in four films: “Fire Over England”, “Dark Journey”, “Farewell Again, and The Squeaker”.

In 1938, he was in “The Vessel of Wrath” with Charles Laughton, and followed this in 1939 with “Yellow Sands” and “Dead Men are Dangerous”. That year he also played the romantic lead in Daphne du Maurier’s “Jamaica Inn”, also with Charles Laughton, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. He appeared in “Poison Pen” (1939) and “Hell’s Cargo” (1939).

During World War II he played mostly supporting roles in films: “Gaslight” (1940), “Bulldog Sees It Through” (1940), “Channel Incident”

(1940), and “Major Barbara” (1941); and the lead in “Hatter’s Castle” (1942). He enlisted in the Royal Navy, but was medically discharged in 1943.

He played the lead again in “This Happy Breed” (1944), and starred in “No Orchids for Miss Blandish” in the West End. “Night Boat to Dublin” (1946), “Odd Man Out” (1947), “Temptation Harbour” (1947), and “Snowbound” (1948) were post-war hits for Newton before his memorably frightening performance as the villainous Bill Sykes in David Lean’s production of “Oliver Twist” (1948). “Kiss the Blood Off My Hands” (1948) was made with Hollywood financing before he played the suave and chilling part of the doctor in “Obsession” (1948) who planned to dispose of his wife’s body in an acid bath.

Eventually Newton was given the part of Long John Silver in Walt Disney’s version of “Treasure Island” (1950), directed by Byron Haskin. It was an incredible success personally and prompted his move to Hollywood.

The acting achievements of Robert Newton are testament that his career was not limited to roistering swashbucklers. He appeared in classic works by Shakespeare and Shaw and Dickens. He co-starred with British greats such as Charles Laughton and Laurence Olivier and he worked with a talented list of directors from Alfred Hitchcock to David Lean. For an actor now best remembered as a pirate, Newton enjoyed an extremely impressive filmography. He was one of the top money-makers in British cinema (as voted in the Motion Picture Herald Fame Poll) from 1947-1951.

“Newton was always tempted to overact ... and his fruity tones and rolling eyes made him an easy target for caricature, but in his earlier years he was more amenable to control and capable of considerable subtlety. But despite Newton’s brilliant acting career his life was bedevilled by alcohol. And it killed him.

And when he had a couple of drinks, he would speak the absolute truth, which could be horrifying. I remember him talking to a friend of mine after lunch, when he’d had a couple of drinks, and he leaned across the table and said, ‘Now I’m going to tell you about you.’

The role of Long John Silver in Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island” was a part made for Robert Newton, and it changed the concept of piracy forever. Silver is a morally ambiguous character and Newton in the film plays up this ambiguity. It is how we believe and expect pirates to behave. Newton’s conscious interpretation of the role is in fact an exaggerated version of his native accent. Being raised in Dorset, not far from Bristol, he was very familiar with the English West Country accent. His use of the accent is also an historical coincidence. During the Golden Age of Piracy, in the late 17th and early 18th century, many pirates came from the West Country. The famous Blackbeard himself, Edward Teach, was born in Bristol and most of the legendary pirates were from Devon or Cornwall – counties that had a strong tradition of seafaring. Newton, therefore, revived the authentic historical accent of the pirates – as well as using a genuine West Country vocabulary.

Newton, always a flamboyant man, using the regional West Country accent that he knew so well, hammed it up dramatically in Treasure Island, immortalising Robert Louis Stevenson’s character of Long John Silver – charming, enthusiastic, powerful and sly. Newton defined the role forever.

Newton has been named among the top 10 of the hardest drinking English actors in the history of cinema.

Along with stars like Errol Flynn, Newton was considered as one of the most popular actors among the male juvenile audience of the 1940s and early 1950s.

Talking like a pirate meant talking like Robert Newton.

It was the success of “Treasure” Island that prompted Robert Newton to relocate to Hollywood and he was one of several British actors in “Soldiers Three” (1951), but his roistering, swashbuckling character was never far from the surface.

He returned to Britain for Tom Brown’s “Schooldays” (1951) to play Thomas Arnold – the headmaster,

and was then cast as the merciless Inspector Javert in Les Miserables (1952). In 1951 he was voted the sixth most popular star in Britain. He made “Blackbeard the Pirate” in 1952 – a shadow of his Silver role in Treasure Island; the alcoholic school teacher Tom Bartlett in “Desert Rats”; and another boisterous ne’er-do-well – the Honourable Ted - in Somerset Maugham’s “The Beachcomber” in 1954.

Newton went to Australia and was asked by Byron Haskins to play the role of Long John Silver again, capitalising on his “Treasure Island” performance in a new film “The Adventures of Long John Silver” shot at Pagewood Studios in Sydney.

Newton’s trouping may have been ham, but his performance remains in the memory long after everything about the films is forgotten.” – Leonard Maltin, “The Disney Films”

Newton was drinking heavily in Australia – seemingly out of control – and in 1954 he was declared bankrupt with debts of £47,000.

“With just about the right amount on board he could be fascinating ... but once he had taken the extra one or two ... he changed gear and became anything from unpredictable to a downright menace. Neither his wives (he had four of them) nor his friends could dissuade him, but his charm was so great, and his entertainment value so spectacular that there was always some idiot who would press him to take the fatal third and fourth.” – David Niven

Robert Newton’s last film appearance in Hollywood was “Around the World in 80 Days” (1956) produced by Michael Todd and released by United Artists. The epic picture directed by Michael Anderson was one of the most popular films of the decade. He played the part of the diligent but misguided Scotland Yard detective Inspector Fix. “Mike Todd had never made a movie before and he sort of made me the unofficial Assistant Producer. He asked me: ‘Who the hell do you know that could play the part of Mr Fix?’ I said, ‘There’s only one man and that’s Bobbie Newton. But the problem is that he hasn’t worked for a while – because he has a serious drink problem – and you must protect yourself. Lots of people are scared to employ him – he disappears!’ “ – David Niven

Newton got the part – which he was given on condition that he didn’t drink while the film was being made.

Anyway, his doctor had warned him that if he did not stop drinking it would be fatal. True to his word, Newton did not touch a drop of alcohol for six months. But the day after shooting was completed Newton fell off the wagon and started drinking again. Within days the great actor was dead.

Robert Newton died on March 25, 1956. He was interred in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles. Some years later his son Nicholas Newton scattered his father’s ashes in Mount’s Bay in Cornwall on the south west tip of England, where he had spent some of the happiest days of his childhood.

NAGB takes art into Over-the-Hill park

he National Art Gallery of the Bahamas took the art outside last Saturday and into the city as they participated in a park beautification effort for its next door neighbours: the community of Hospital Lane, West Hill and Meeting Streets.

In collaboration with ALIV, organisers “thought nationally while acting locally” as they transformed the Hospital Lane North Park.

Groups and organisations from across New Providence were invited to join in the celebratory day that served as a clean-up initiative, but was also intended to bring joy to participants and a bit more charm to the historically significant community. The morning and afternoon were dedicated to cleaning up existing playground equipment, repainting walls, weeding properties, and removing debris and garbage.

Abby Smith, the NAGB community outreach officer, said a beautification day would not have been complete without the addition of a mural.

Designed by students and alumni from the University of the Bahamas, the mural strives to display the energy and power of the community where the artwork has found its new home.

Ms Smith explained that the NAGB Mural Programme, which was launched in 2015, was introduced as a way for the museum to take amazing Bahamian art beyond the walls of the Villa Doyle and into neighbouring areas such as the historic Charlestown, where the NAGB is located; Downtown Nassau, and now Over-the-Hill communities.

“This year’s mural-call theme is ‘Back To Da Island’, and in this instance the piece illuminated the connectivity between this important

community and its cultural and historical kinsmen of the Family Islands.

Beyond the import of giving much needed time and attention to the park, art is often a gateway to broader community improvement,” said Ms Smith.

This summer, the NAGB team also organised a ‘Back To Da Island’ themed camp that explored indigenous Bahamian crafts and fine art. Students learned craft-making techniques and experimented with utilising those techniques in unusual ways, all while learning about the stories and histories

of the islands where these different crafts originated.

Ms Smith said it’s an awesome feeling for organisers to know this camp has now reached its fourth year.

Through the years, she said, many kids have been positively impacted by the summer programme, so much so that the NAGB has seen many of them return throughout the year for other seasonal activities.

To have so many people care about the appearance of the Hospital Lane North Park, an area that was previously neglected, abandoned,

vandalised or misused, Volunteers take means a lot to part in NAGB’s Ms Smith and beautification her team. For of the Hospital the park to be Lane North Park transformed and surrounding into a usable, areas. delightful space, is empowering and inspiring for residents and visitors alike, she said.

“The fact that the NAGB had the opportunity to engage in such meaningful work only strengthens our commitment to the communities we are continually striving to serve. Also, to be joined by our corporate partner ALIV in supporting a mural designed by young creatives from our very own UB, some of whom have roots in Over-the-Hill neighbourhoods, only makes the effort that much more special,” said Ms Smith.

She said the NAGB wishes to thank its very own Junior Arts Council, UB student groups, the ProSociety, the Japanese Visual Arts Society, and all of the organisations and individuals who dedicated their time to such a wonderful effort.

t is often said that the more things change, the more they stay the same. And if you compare ‘Nassau’ of 1918 with New Providence of 2018, almost everything has changed ...except “too far”.

I found an interesting report in the very first (1960) edition of The Bahamas Handbook and Businessman’s Annual, which talked about a phosphorescent lake called the Lake of Fire, which few Bahamians ever saw because it was “too far out of town”.

How far was it? About two miles from Rawson Square. We know it now as Lake Waterloo, but the once phosphorescent water no longer glows in the dark.

It was said that in 1910 no Bay Street businessman could rub together more than £200 in ready cash. That’s about $1,000. People of Nassau were poor and peasants went barefoot, except perhaps on Sunday. Much of the population lived in thatched houses, maybe dreaming of moving into a house built of wood.

Male labourers earned one shilling a day, but women were paid only sixpence, and because government did not have enough money to pay these

wages, it was a regular thing to see prisoners building and repairing roads.

Roads were of gleaming white, untarred limestone. One of them circled most of the island, but beyond the settled area, that road was merely a bridle path. Only a handful of people lived further west than Fort Charlotte, or further east than Fort Montagu, because it was “too far”.

The Tea House, built on a site opposite today’s RUBiS gas station on West Bay Street, was designed to attract sea bathers. It failed because it was “too far”.

Whatever the distance, the average Bahamian walked to his or her destination, and unlike today, any woman was able to walk in any part of the island, day or night, without fear of being harmed. Was it because those who might have had evil intentions didn’t want to walk “too far”?

The importance of

ith all this talk about Lighthouse Point and the direct conflict between one group that thinks it is a good thing and another group who knows it is a bad thing, I wonder, why would anybody endorse the destruction of an area as magnificent as Lighthouse Point?

I got into a discussion on Facebook with somebody who told me that “the people” (his words) wanted it, so it should happen. This makes me wonder if we as a nation always do what “the people” want...after a referendum where “the people” spoke and yet their will was not imposed.

Have “the people” of the area thought it through, have they listened to the conservationists?

There must be turtles that return to those beaches every year to nest, that alone is cause enough to protect the area. What about all the different birds that call it home and lizards, crabs, insects? There must be a wealth of animal life that will be chased away or killed in the development of Lighthouse Point, not to mention the plant life, so delicate and fragile at the hands of man.

Along that same coast there is a wealth of marine life that would be totally disrupted by hoards of tourists who will come, conquer and leave nothing but devastation behind. After a short time the area would become unrecognisable, and then what? With natural beauty such as Lighthouse

So people fight over their right as Bahamians to destroy one of the most untouched and beautiful parts of the Bahamas, whilst another faction are putting their all into protecting and preserving it for generations to come.

How ironic that many of the people who live so near to this beauty cannot see it; they are blinded by the promise of the almighty dollar and bright T-shirts. The dollars will be few and will be spent quickly, the T-shirts will fade, and left will be the total destruction of a fragile ecosystem, so artfully created by the Almighty over thousands of years…pulled down, ground up and tossed away for a few bucks.

There is a Greek proverb that I love dearly: “Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” What does this mean? To me it is pretty obvious, but then the obvious appears to be missed by many in our country, including some of our leaders. It means that for a strong and healthy society, we, the elders of the nation, must protect and project for future generations. Planting trees that will grow and flourish long after we are gone. It can be taken metaphorically, but the bottom line is that the generation of today must look out for the

There are many proverbs that warn us about being hasty and taking the first opportunity thrown at us.

When I was heavily involved with the protection the marine turtles, people accused me of trying to destroy the livelihood of a handful of fishermen who caught, slaughtered and sold turtle meat. I was accused of trying to interfere with Bahamian “culture”. I address these allegations with pleasure. The few fishermen who made money from turtle meat are now catching fish, and now there are groups taking people out to dive with turtles, several such operations are in the Exumas and Eleuthera. A turtle can be eaten but once, but photographed a million times.

that they want to get away and enjoy what nature has in store for them.

We, as a country, have much to offer, but we are systematically pulling our greatest resource apart, wantonly destroying our natural beauty spots to fulfil the wishes of wealthy, greedy, businessmen who have no regard for our future. The time is now, and they want to make money, on the backs of our beaches and environment.

If is tragic that so many people in the Bahamas simply don’t get it and cannot see further than the colour a fancy T-shirt and promises of vast sums of money to be made.

I have been on cruises. They even hand you a bottle of free water when you get off the ship, and as all the food is free, so everybody goes back on board to eat; little money is spent on shore.

The “people” must listen and believe what the Bahamian experts are telling them, they must say no!
