Basil Johnson* said he has been doing his best, despite life’s circumstances, to have a merry heart. He does this by training himself to focus on the positive.

With all the bad news con stantly being spread through the media in today, and with so many people dealing with mounting challenges in their lives, this scripture resonates more than ever. Some Chris tians have declared that they are determined to follow the Bible’s urging and strive for a merry heart.Geron Smith told Tribune Religion when he first read Proverbs 17:22 he was amazed that the Bible gave such practi cal advice on how to live day by day.“Every word of it is true.

In the conference audience of imams, patriarchs, rabbis and muftis was Metropolitan Anthony, in charge of foreign relations for the Russian Ortho dox Church, which has firmly backed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. His boss, Patriarch Kirill, was supposed to have

the Almighty will never again be held hostage to the human thirst forFrancispower.”then laid down a chal lenge to all those in the room to commit themselves to resolving disputes through dialogue and negotiation, not with arms.

The Russian patriarch has blasted the West’s secular men tality and claimed the seeds of the Ukraine conflict were sown by foreign threats to Russia’s borders. He has depicted the conflict as a struggle against a foreign liberal establishment pur portedly demanding countries hold “gay parades” as the price of admission to a world of excess consumption and freedom.

POPE Francis told the Rus sian Orthodox hierarchy and other faith leaders Wednesday that religion must never be used to justify the “evil” of war, and asked at an outdoor Mass in Kazakhstan, “How many deaths will it take?” for peace to prevail in Ukraine. An increasingly frail Francis made the appeal during his first full day in the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan, where he opened a global inter faith conference and ministered to the tiny Catholic community in the majority Muslim country.

HOW MANY MUST DIE? POPE BLASTS RUSSIA WAR, APPEALS FOR PEACE

Kirill sent a message to the congress read aloud by Anthony. In it, the Russian patriarch didn’t refer to the war but in general to problems over the past two decades caused by “attempts to build a world without relying on moral values.”

“These attempts have led not only to the loss of the concept of justice in international relations, but also to brutal confrontation, military conflicts, the spread of terrorism and extremism in dif ferent parts of the world,” Kirill said in his message.

Al-Tayeb used his speech to the conference to complain that traditional religions had been replaced by a culture of lust and gay marriage. “This is not accept able, not even for animals and beasts, let alone for people with pure hearts and sound minds,” he said.

“May we never justify vio lence. May we never allow the sacred to be exploited by the profane. The sacred must never be a prop for power, nor power a prop for the sacred!”

He made the appeal more explicit in an afternoon out door Mass for Kazakhstan’s tiny Catholic community, in which he asked for prayers for “beloved Ukraine.”“Howmany deaths will it still take before conflict yields to dialogue for the good of people, nations and all humanity?” he asked. “The one solution is peace and the only way to arrive at peace is through dialogue.”

He has blessed Russian soldiers going into war and invoked the idea that Rus sians and Ukrainians are one people.Francis didn’t mention Russia or Ukraine in his remarks to the Kazakh conference. I was thinking, ‘how could she fall asleep with the baby in her arms’.”Acloser look made him realise that the baby was wedged in between the car seat and the floor, having tumbled on her head. His wife, he discovered, was foaming at the mouth, her fists tightly clenched and a tear rolling down her face.“I wondered if the tear was from the pain she was feeling because her fists were clenched so tightly or if it was from concern that she was helpless and thinking Shekinah was on the floor and I was in the food store,” he told Tribune Weekend.“Iquickly grabbed Shekinah and reassured my wife that the baby was OK. At this time Donique’s body was twitching. She was not responding; her eyeballs were rolling and her tongue was out of her mouth. I told the security

When he thought it was finally nearing com pletion, he had the strange feeling that it was somehow still unfinished. That's when tragedy struck.Hiswife, 38-year-old Donique Wallace, died suddenly last December, just a few days after Christmas and only a month after their fifth wedding anniversary.

Once they found a suitable walker, the family decided to go to the SuperValue food store in Golden Gates. He quickly dashed in to grab some fruit for his wife, whom he left in the car with their daughter. Upon returning to the car, he experienced a great shock.

In January of this year, a voice note of Pastor Wallace sharing the story of his wife’s passing and encouraging others in their time of pain went viral on Bahamian social media. Those who heard it said they were blown away by his strength and courage to speak so bravely and openly about the matter.

Donique had experi enced two miscarriages prior to successfully giving birth to the couple’s daugh ter, but otherwise had no known health issues. Doc tors determined that she died from a seizure which was caused by an enlarged heart, which had previ ously been undetected.

end of the day, after you have gone through all that you have gone, through God is still the God of res toration,” he said.

“The last two chap ters of the book deal with coping with tragedy. The very last chapter is about restoration. After all you had to go through, God will restore you. He will lift you high above the clouds. You have all you need to live this life in a victori ous way. Everything you need to fulfil your purpose is already inside of you in this life. You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only option you have. And that is what I want the reader to takeaway from the book.”

At the tender age of 8, he felt the call of God on his life and began to play the drums at his local church. As time passed, Pastor Wallace decided to pursue a career in ministry. He received formal training under the tute lage of his father, whom he succeeded. He ordained a minister of the gospel on March 30, 2018, and became the senior pastor of Church of the Lord Jesus Temple, headed by Bishop Dr David L Braynen, on March 28, 2021.Pastor Wallace, who is also a musician and teacher, lives by Isaiah 54:17: “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgement thou shalt condemn.”

Pastor Wallace’s story has not only gained trac tion locally but also abroad.“People have been reaching out to me from Africa, Turks and Caicos, Barbados, Jamaica and the US. I just want people to know that there is pur pose in the pain that they are going through and that God is faithful. He will bring them through,” he said.Born on September 20, 1984 to the late Bishop Simeon Wallace and Sylvia Wallace, he was the fourth of five children.

THE COUPLE's daughter Shekinah was just four months old when her mother died of a sudden seizure.

Pastor Wallace shares this sad story in further detail in his new book, which he said he wrote to help people overcome life’s pains, disappoint ments, depression, losses and“Godbetrayals.gaveme this book in 2018. I kept starting and stopping. But after the passing of my dear wife I decided that I am going to finish the book. My dad also passed away before my wife. We were very close as he was grooming me for ministry. He was the bishop and I was assisting him for a while. He passed on June 8 while I was hos pitalised in 2020. And in 2021, while I was dealing with all of that, then my wife, who was also my best friend, passed away.”

“I want the reader to take away a few points away from book, and for one that is we all go through things in life; no one is exempted. We all will be faced with the chal lenges of life. When you face your darkest hour, God will be with you in your darkest hour. At the
