After a long hiatus, students of St John’s High School were able to celebrate school mass in their newly refurbished auditorium. Resident school chaplain, the Rev Fr Enrique McCartney was the chief celebrant assisted by Fr Chester Burton, who is a former high school teacher. This was an auspicious occasion because the director of Anglican Church Educational Author ity (ACEA), Italia Davies, and her assistant deputy director, Leliannie Burrows, were also in attendance.Witha school population nearing 1,000 students, the audi torium was packed. Principal Junann Lewis, Vice Principal of High School Kristia Knowles, Senior Master High School Edwin Embeleton, Senior Mis tress of High School Regina Hunt, Vice Principal of the Primary Department Tamara Moncur, and Senior Master of the Primary Department Kishan Sands joined the students for theFrservice.McCartney decided to celebrate the Feast Day of the Beheading of St John the Bap tist, patron saint of the Anglican Diocese and patron of St John’s College. In his sermon, he reminded the students of the noteworthy characteristics St John displayed. He was the cousin of Jesus; he was sad dled with the responsibility of preparing the way of Jesus Christ as a forerunner or emis sary, he spoke of the arrival of Jesus reminding the citizenry of their need for repentance. John the Baptist admonished his cadre of eager hearers to follow Jesus’ example, constantly speaking the truth, boldly rebuking vices, and patiently suffering for truth’s sake. Father McCartney described John the Baptist as the last of the Old Testament prophets. He didn’t mince his words; he was forthright in his words and tried to balance the unfair practices that were happening during the time of his life. John met his untimely death by speaking out about his displeasure of Herod Antipas (himself divorced) mar rying his half-brother’s wife, Herodias. He considered it a transgression of the Jewish Mosaic Law. This angered Herodias, so Herod Antipas ordered John’s arrest. As recorded in the Gospel according to Mark, she would have had John killed but could not because Herod feared the man. But Herod’s birthday cel ebration offered an opportunity. Salome, Herodias’s daughter by her first husband, Herod Philip, performed a dance that so pleased Herod that he offered to grant any wish she expressed. Prompted by her mother, Salome asked for John’s head on a platter, a wish Herod was now bound to fulfill. Reluctantly, he sent his sol diers to have the request carried out.Father McCartney posited that students have to be focused like John the Baptist this new semester. He urged them to dis card all distractions and focus on the task at hand to excel and obtain good grades this new semester.

GREEK politicians and the country's powerful Orthodox Church joined in condemning a retired bishop who claimed Friday that women aren't raped “without wanting it.” In an interviewƒ with private Skai TV, Metropolitan Chrysos tomos of Dodoni supported the Church’s official position against abortion, but added that there should be no abortion even in the case of rape. He then proceeded to ques tion the notion of rape itself, saying: “A woman does not sit and get raped without want ing it.” He added that there can be no conception as a result of rape.Chrysostomos called abortion a “crime.”Politicians of all stripes con demned his remarks on rape. “The Metropolitan of Dodo ni’s statement about rape is inconceivable and is to be condemned,” Education and Religious Affairs Minister Niki Kerameus tweeted. “It brutally insults society and does not agree with the position of the Church, which supports women victims of abuse and rape.” “We support victims of rape unconditionally,” added gov ernment spokesman Yannis Oikonomou.

The Church of Greece's ruling body, the Holy Synod, also condemned Chrysostomos' remarks as “unacceptable for an Orthodox cleric and offensive for human beings and especially for women and victims of rape.” "The treatment of women, without exception, as equal to men and their protection from any abuse are the Church of Greece’s official position,” a Holy Synod statement said.

“The church’s hope and aim is that it truly be ‘God’s lighthouse’ and that this place of worship always stands to the greater honour and glory of God, who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We continue to be ‘labourers together with God’, endeavouring ‘to be a shining light to all men and to be the salt that makes the positive difference in their lives’.”
Then, September 14-15, two nights of fellowship services areTheplanned.week’s activities culminate with the anniversary ser vice on September 18 at 3pm.
FOR the last six decades years, Mount Moriah Baptist Church has been a witness in the community, touching, influencing and impacting the lives of those that have been led to its ministry. The church, currently led by Rev Dr Wilton George Strachan, will observe its 60th anniversary and decades of God’s guidance and Christian service with a slate of planned events. The congregation kicks off its anniversary celebrations on September 11 at 7pm with the 13th Annual Elkin R Storr Memorial Hymn Festival.
The highlight of this festival will be the return of its youth choir members from the 1970s through to the ’90s. A representative from the ministry said this event will provide “a nostalgic flashback of the rich music heritage of the church during that era.”
Chrysostomos, 83, retired from active duty in 2011, and his title is honorific. While an active bishop he was known for his strong views. He once told a fellow bishop disagreeing with him during a Holy Synod meet ing to “Go play with your dolls.”

FORMER BISHOP’S REMARKS ON RAPE CONDEMNED BY GREEK CHURCH
Biblical mentions
The Samaritan center of wor ship is on Mount Gerizim in the present-day West Bank, instead of Jerusalem, where the Jewish temple stood. The faith has its own priesthood, religious cal endar and theology. According to Samaritan belief, a messianic figure called the Taheb will usher in an era of Divine Favour, during which the ark of the covenant will be revealed, and Mount Gerizim will be restored as the only recognized center for worship.Throughout the group’s his tory – particularly during the first century, the backdrop for the story in the Book of Luke –the Samaritans have often been marginalized and discriminated against by their neighbors. The relationship between ancient Jews and their Samaritan neigh bors was hostile, so people listening to the story would have been shocked that the hero was a Samaritan.Effectively, the parable turns social reality on its head. Those expected to act righteously and model behavior for others to imitate failed where the Samaritan succeeded. The par able challenged social norms and prejudice based simply on ethnic origin, religious affiliation and where people made their home.
The Gospel of John depicts an especially significant con versation between Jesus and a Samaritan. Worn out by a recent journey, he asks a woman to draw water for him at a well. She is rather taken aback, for as the editor of the the chapter explains, Jews don’t mingle with Samaritans. Nevertheless, she does as he requests. Their ensu ing conversation mentions major tenets of belief where Samaritan ism and Judaism differ, despite their many similarities: their contrasting ideas about proph ets, “Messiahs” and where to worship. According to the story, she and many people from the nearby vicinity become followers of Jesus. Early converts In fact, it is quite likely the Samaritans were among the first followers of Jesus’ movement.
The Book of Hebrews in the New Testament also shows Samaritan tendencies, such as referencing heroes from Samari tanDespitetradition.this important role in the beginning of the Jesus move ment, the relationship between Christianity and Samaritanism has not always been positive. The group has often been required to navigate between much larger and more powerful groups, whether they be Jewish, Chris tian or Muslim. Violence, displacement and conversions – both voluntary and forced –have dramatically diminished the Samaritan community over the centuries.
“Good Samaritan” is a label often used to describe someone acting selflessly to benefit others, even if a total stranger.

Hidden lesson Samaritanism and Judaism share a common origin in ancient Israel, but the rift between the two communities had already been growing for centuries before Jesus’ birth.
In the Book of Matthew, Jesus directs his disciples to preach only to the house of Israel, and not to Samaritans or non-Jews, seeming to display an antiSamaritan bias. The Gospel of John paints quite a different picture, however, first with the account of the Samaritan women at the Laterwell.inJohn, when detractors accuse Jesus of having a demon and being a Samaritan, he only denies the first – seemingly refus ing to distance himself from the Samaritans.TheBook of Acts, which describes the start of the Chris tian church, includes the story of Stephen, who is described as the first martyr among Jesus’ follow ers. Acts 7 depicts Stephen trying to defend himself against charges of blasphemy, using a text that is at least influenced by Samaritan tradition, if not a version of what will become the Samaritan Pen tateuch itself.

As a professor of biblical studies who has written about Samaritans, I’ve learned that while most of my students have heard of the “good Samaritan,” fewer are aware of the social and historical realities reflected in the story – much less that the Samar itan community still exists today.

The story of the Good Samari tan is not the only time the Samaritan community makes its presence felt in the New Testa mentJustliterature.onechapter earlier, Luke 9, describes an unwelcome recep tion Jesus’ disciples receive as they are about to enter a Samaritan village. Jesus and his party are making their way to Jerusalem: an offense to the Samaritans’ belief that Mount Gerizim is the proper place for worship, an issue that often func tioned as shorthand for all that separated the two communities. The villagers therefore choose not to help the travellers on their way. In response, the disciples are ready to call down divine retribu tion as punishment from heaven. Jesus will have none of it, and rebukes the disciples while leav ing the villagers in peace.
The group’s sacred text is its own version of the first five books of the Hebrew Bible: what Christians know as the Penta teuch, and Jews call the Torah.
We praise people as ‘Good Samaritans,’ but there’s a complex history behind the phrase
Some may recognise that the phrase has its origin in a bibli cal story, one of Jesus’ parables recounted in the Book of Luke, Chapter 10. In this story, a traveller from the Samaritan community, a Middle Eastern ethnic and religious group, hap pens upon a man who had been robbed and beaten by the side of theTheroad.injured man was ignored by two men passing by, both of whom belonged to groups who were religiously respected in Jesus’ Jewish community: a priest and a Levite, a tribe with special religious responsibilities.
In contrast, the Samaritan gives first aid to the victim, places him upon his donkey, and transports him to an inn where the beaten man is housed, cared for and fed – with all his expenses paid by the Samaritan traveler.
21st century Samaritans Today, the Samaritans number somewhere around 1,000 people. Most are in communities out side Tel Aviv and near the West Bank city of Nablus, where they find themselves situated between Israeli and Palestinian cultures and institutions. Most Samari tans hold Israeli citizenship and have Israeli health insurance, but many also attend Palestinian schools, speak Arabic and have both Hebrew and Arabic names. The small size of the modern Samaritan community makes them easy to overlook. But for those who are willing to listen, the message of the Good Samari tan – a message of kindness, not blinded by nationalistic, religious or ethnic prejudice – resonates as loudly as it ever has.
THE PARABLE OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN IS TOLD BY JESUS IN THE GOSPEL OF LUKE

He said the GUF will endeav our to be its brother’s keeper and to do their part to forge genuine fellowship, offer assis tance and support whenever possible. They firmly believe there is more that unites Christians than divides them. Going forward, the GUF is looking forward hosting events like the Gathering 2022, set to take place in November; a youth and millennials conference, a pastor’s summit, a marriage retreat, and assisting churches with post-pandemic ministry. “It is important (being a part of an organisation like this one), because of what our name suggests: the spirit of Global United is about bring ing churches together. There is strength in unity and we should always try to be a part of some thing bigger than ourselves,” said Pastor Ellis.
The Bahamas is a Christian nation according to our consti tution, therefore it is important to heighten the spirit of unity and spirituality in our country,” said Pastor Ellis. He said the organisation is beneficial to those that join because the group has plans to: equip believers, strengthen marriages, foster genuine fel lowship, and resurrect the practice of regular prayer.
“The body of Christ is too disjointed. There are lit erally hundreds of church fragments consisting of Protestants, Pentecostals, Char ismatics, Independents, and non-denominationals, but some how, although in so many cases we are saying and doing the same things to enhance God’s kingdom on earth, we have for the most part either been unwilling or unable to come together for the advancement of the believers and the building of the kingdom of God,” he said. “Our desire is to, wherever possible, unite this segment of the body. We believe that this is an appointed time on God’s agenda to bring unity to the body. While we accept that the task is too great for any one person or group to fulfil, we are convinced that the GUF is mandated to do its part to cause unity to come to this group of believers from around the world. We want to help.”
MEMBERS of the Global United Fellowship (GUF) Bahamas Province recently unveiled the organisation's latest key national appoint ments during a special service at the Agape Church.

The GUF was founded in 2013, under the leadership of Bishop Neil C Ellis, who serves as the presiding prelate of the fellowship and is the senior pastor of Mount Tabor Church. It is an interdenominational body of spiritual leaders, fellow ships and congregations united strategically to plan, implement, and execute transformative and generational change as well as expand the kingdom of God to all nations of the world. GUF has grown from 40 churches at its inception to more than 1,400 churches in 42 countries around theTheworld.Bahamas Province and its new leaders have been given the responsibility to promote suc cessful marriages, resurrect the dying discipline of prayer, and build covenant relationships within the body of Christ. The Province is set to carry out this mandate by using a holistic and innovative approach to ministry postPastorCOVID.Delton Ellis, the newest provincial leader for the Bahamas, said at the appoint ment service that the sanctuary was filled with sounds of praises as hundreds of pastors and believers who came together from the length and breath of the country for the installation of GUF’s new leaders.

He said Bishop Ellis preached a powerful sermon entitled “It ain’t over yet”. He reminded the new leaders and everyone in attendance that it's time to get back in the game. Bishop Ellis told the audience that their mistakes, failures or shortcom ings do not disqualify them from fulfilling God’s purpose for their life.Pastor Delton Ellis also brought remarks and encour aged the new leaders to unite as one. He said he is grateful for the stellar and diverse team that has been selected to serve alongside him as diversity is important because diversity builds the skills and talents.
“GUF is important in the Bahamas because it embraces all believers to strengthen the body of Christ in the Bahamas.
