'Natural is professional'

Festival to boost curly, kinky hair pride

omen are not the only ones who are told wearing their hair in its natural state is unprofessional. Take Bahamian creative Travis Sweeting for example. He has gotten flack for wearing his hair just the way it grows – up and out. And since being told his appearance is improper, he has been on mission to change the standard of beauty and what is considered professional appearance in corporate culture.

Travis’ experience is one that many Bahamian women can relate to. When making arrangements for the upcoming CurlyCru Natural Hair Festival, which he will be presenting this November, Travis wanted to get feedback from women about the experiences they’ve had.

He posted a question in a Facebook community asking women to share their stories. He received some interesting insight into how natural hair is viewed in the job market.

“I was told I needed to figure out what I wanted to do with my hair because people wouldn’t take me seriously as a business woman,” said Margo, one of the Facebook commentators.

She recalled an experience while working at a local bank when wearing natural hair was more frowned upon than it is now.

“You couldn’t wear braids either. They were OK with weave down your back though,” she said.

Tonya added: “At my very first job interview as a teen for a Summer job, as a receptionist for an offshore bank downtown, I was told that natural hair was not acceptable.”

Though Jenna said she hasn’t received any negative comments towards her locs in a professional setting, she has gotten criticism from other women.

“I’ve recently started my locs. I’ve found that this is a whole other level in the natural hair arena,” she said. “I’m surrounded by young women who feel that extensions are everything and so I look odd

because I don’t lean towards that standard of beauty. I’ve had people ask me why would I do that to myself. I’ve had relatives ask if they could relax my hair. I’ve had people tell me I would be so much more beautiful with straight hair. I have even been told on many occasions that my hair is unprofessional.”

Helping to change negative perceptions of natural hair, and to encourage both men and women to be comfortable with natural hair and celebrate it, is the objective of the CurlyCru Fest.

Travis will curate the event, along with other thought

leaders who will fuse art and music with social awareness of natural hair pride, “for a robust response to acceptance and self-care, helping many to live out their best selves as naturally as they wish.”

He said through the event they hope to bolster pride in all the curly, coily, and kinky haired people of the Bahamas “It’s important for every man and woman to know that however their hair grows from their head is attractive, professional,” he told Tribune Weekend. “Hair is very important to our identity and culture as human beings, and it shows expression of what who we are, and European beauty standards should not be the basis of our beauty standards because it means we’re burying our own identity.”

Travis said they hope to bring in visionaries, innovators, problem solvers, doers, and movers and shakers in the community and have to come together at one highenergy event.

“We will merge our care messages in a fun-filled event roll-out that resonates for years to come,” he said.

CurlyCru Natural Hair Festival is being produced

by TRAV Creative, Travis’ creative agency here in Nassau. The company has been involved in producing, marketing and fundraising charity events for over seven years, including the Fashion

4 Foundation efforts for the Ranfurly Home for Kids, and the Kickz and Gigglez kids fashion show for autism awareness.

The unexpected early arrival of their son had the Edwardses scrambling to find all the necessary specialty and usual baby supplies. Luckily, they had family to help them out. However, for those parents with premature babies who are not as fortunate, the couple tell carahunt, they have launched a special charity and store to cater to all preemie needs.

Preemie's Promise

M

ost mothersto-be have 40 weeks to prepare for the birth of their child and often are blessed by family and friends with a baby shower at which they are gifted the necessary items ahead of the delivery day.

But what happens when your baby arrives months before it is supposed to and mom and dad are left totally unprepared.

This was the scenario Shaundica Edwards and her husband, N’Krumah Edwards II, faced when she had to have an emergency Caesarean section at just 29 weeks.

Their son, N’Krumah III, nicknamed “Trey”, was born on November 6, 2013 – 11 weeks before his due date.

The family’s experience led them to want to help others in a similar situation by creating a charity called Preemie’s Promise, which Shaundica recently expanded to include a shopping line for the littlest members for the family.

“I had a complicated pregnancy, and when my son was born he weighed just 2.7 pounds; he was really small,” she told Tribune Weekend. “We had absolutely nothing for this baby – no clothing, no blanket no nothing and we started panicking.”

Shaundica’s mom, mother-in-law and sister were able to step in and immediately rushed out to the stores to grab whatever items they could buy to help the new parents out.

“My son came home right before Christmas and so that year we formed Preemie’s Promise and we made donations to the families of babies in the NICU. We also asked our family, friends and our son’s godparents to do the same thing and then they told other people as well, and so it became a charity that was formed in honour of our son.”

“My son had to stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Princess Margaret Hospital for 44 days. It was an overwhelming experience, with good days and bad days, and just a roller coaster of emotions. Fortunately, we were able to get everything that we needed, but we did see other parents who didn’t have the stuff that they needed or couldn’t afford to get it,” she said.

When her son was discharged two months later he had grown from being 2.7 pounds to 3.15 pounds.

“During his stay in the NICU only parents and his grandparents were allowed

Trey weighed only 2.7 pounds when he was born.

Today, Trey is a happy and healthy five-year-old boy

to visit him and so when my sister saw him for the first time she was like, ‘Oh, he is so small’, and I was like you should have seen him before, he is huge now.”

Once they were left hospital, the Edwardses were determined to give back to show their gratitude to everyone who helped with the care of their son, and to provide assistance to others in similar positions.

“My son came home right before Christmas and so that year we formed Preemie’s Promise and we made donations to the families of babies in the NICU. We also asked our family, friends and our son’s godparents to do the same thing and then they told other people as well, and so it became a charity that was formed in honour of our son,” said Shaundica.

The Edwards family also wanted to gift the nurses who care for these precious babies.

“I stayed with my baby every time I could, but they had set visiting hours, you couldn’t stay with him all the time. And so you really are placing your baby in the hands of the doctors and the nurses and you have to trust that they will do all they can for your baby. And they do a great job,” she said.

“Even years later I saw one of the nurses and she didn’t remember me at first, but I told her I had to show her my son and told him to tell her thank you, because she helped save his life.”

The second component of Preemie’s Promise came this month – the launch of a specialty store that caters to all of the needs of a premature baby.

“Basically, people would always reach out to me and ask me where they can find small enough clothes or where they can find a good breast pump, and I would always give them a website or offer to order it for them, but with preemies, they tend to come without warning and it can take several days for stuff to come in, and so my husband suggested that we have items

on hand already that parents can use immediately,” said Shaundica.

“My son wore preemie clothing for the first few months of his life, before he could even fit newborn or 0-3 months. So we have a line of preemie clothes, blankets, baby bags and we also have tiny hats and mittens. A lot of mothers buy mittens so that their babies don’t scratch themselves, but in the NICU babies are often attached to so many tubes and mittens make it harder for them to pull at them, so they can be very important.”

Anther important item she sells is a hospital grade Medela breast pump and all the components to transport milk, which she found very helpful when she had to express milk to send to the hospital.

“He had to be fed through a tube and they wanted it to be exclusively breast milk and so I would have to pump around the clock for many weeks to have enough to send to the hospital and to do that you need a very strong pump,” she said.

One item Shaundica wishes she had had when her son was in hospital is a NICU journal where things like feeds, weight gain and respiratory function can be measured and documented. And similarly there are milestone charts that can be used to track those huge milestones in a preemie’s first days, such as “I came off the ventilator today” or “I had my first feed today”, “first cuddle with mom or dad”, or “I gained weight”.

There are also items to help nervous parents once baby is home, including first aid kits and a pulse oximeter (which lets you know the baby is getting enough oxygen) and teeny bottle nipples and pacifier for tiny mouths.

“The response so far has been overwhelming, so many parents are saying they weren’t prepared but now they are, and it’s just awesome that we can help people who are now in the situation our family was in,” she said.

EAT Bahamas Food Tour dishes up cuisine, culture

T

ravelling food lovers are learning to embrace Bahamian cuisine and culture through a tour cooked up by a former television show host. With her EAT Bahamas Food Tour, Andrica “Dre” Smith-Munroe has picked up from where her TV series “A Mouth Full” left off.

“As a former host of a popular, local food show I was frequently asked for best of the best recommendations.

It sparked the idea to curate foodie experiences that others can be a part of,” said Mrs Smith-Munroe, who for six seasons tantalised viewers with mouth-watering food from across the nation.

Inspired by her love of food and a desire to showcase the culinary landscape of the country, EAT Bahamas was born last October.

With six to seven stops on a 3.5-hour culinary adventure, it’s best to put on your stretchy pants for a tour which collects guests from Rawson Square every Monday to Saturday beginning at 11am.

Aboard Goldstar Coaches, an air-conditioned 15-seater bus with free Wi-Fi, EAT Bahamas whisks tourists and locals alike to popular eateries and hidden gems to eat and drink their way through signature dishes and frosty libations.

“The concept of food tours is relatively new to the Bahamas. I think what sets us apart is our tour guides’ knowledge of food and history,” said Mrs Smith-Munroe. “Our goal is to develop a collection of food tours that are timeless as opposed to just being trendy.

who are steadily growing a loyal fan base.”

EAT Bahamas’ most popular tour spirits visitors from downtown Nassau to its first stop, the Montagu foreshore for fresh conch salad made by a “conchpreneur” who goes by the name of Yellow.

“He is one of our favourites,” shared Mrs Smith-Munroe. “He went from making conch salad on the side as a construction worker who one day took the leap to do it full time. Now, his family-operated conch stand is successful.”

Next up is the East Bay Poop Deck for conchy conch fritters followed by a visit to Mortimer Candies for sweet treats made from recipes passed down through four generations. The food tour

also pays a visit to Bamboo Shack for a mini snack and to Tasty Teas for a sip of iced bush teas, before guests can burn off a few calories at EduCulture during a Junkanoo shack experience.

Hopefully, guests have worked up an appetite from the cultural immersion and are ready to dig into cracked conch, tamarind wings, peas n’ rice, baked macaroni, plantains and wash it all down with Switcha at Arawak Cay’s Drifters restaurant. If time and the stomach allows, EAT Bahamas might drop in on Flo’s Fruit Shack for native fruits in season.

“The tour is full of surprises.

It’s not just food it really is a cultural, people-to-people experience. We eat, we rush, we dance, laugh, and our visitors learn that there is more to this beautiful destination than sun, sand and sea,” said Mrs Smith-Munroe, whose goal is to establish EAT Bahamas Food Tours on major Family Islands.

Shortly after its launch nearly a year ago, fate smiled on the tour operator who had the good fortune of leading a group of world-class chefs and the president of the American Culinary Association on EAT Bahamas’ inaugural food tour.

“It was serendipitous,” said Mrs Smith Munroe. “Their driver for the week just happened to be our transportation partner. They had a cancellation which freed up some time for them. When our partner heard he asked if they would want to participate in the tour and being the foodies that they are, they jumped at the opportunity.

We are so glad they did. It was an all-around fun time.”

Ten months and scores of travellers later, the EAT Bahamas Food Tour is going strong.

Said Mrs Smith-Munroe: “For our team the joy comes from watching others learn about the Bahamas through our food.”

Sinatra's old hangout gets a $3.5m facelift Historic Freeport restaurant rises from the ashes

o preserve the history of the iconic Stoned Crab restaurant, new owner Olivia Pagés took the costly approach to fully renovate the structure at a cost of $3.5 million.

Although tearing it down and building a new restaurant would have cost a lot less, Ms Pagés did not want to destroy the rich history of the building that was constructed in the late 1960s, and which was a favourite dining and jazz spot for Hollywood legend Frank Sinatra.

“It has this old charm; Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack used to come here and play jazz here,” said Ms Pagés.

“It was always a jazz restaurant, and so it has a lot of history, and that is one thing you cannot build; you cannot build history.”

Ms Pagés, who had visited the restaurant as a child in the early days, sat down with Tribune Weekend for an interview during Stoned Crab’s official opening two weeks ago.

During a visit to Freeport, she saw the dilapidated building and decided to purchase it from former owner Mario Donato. This was in December 2014.

She hired Bruce Silvera of Freeport Construction, whose father was the original contractor for the restaurant in the late 60s, to do the renovations. It took four years to complete, due to delays caused by the hurricanes of 2016 and 2017.

The Stoned Crab sits on the Taino Beach strip, and its unique roof structure has served as a landmark to boaters in the area for decades.

The structure has three big cones for a roof, resembling teepees, in honour of the Taino Indians who were the original settlers of Grand Bahama and who lived near the beach.

The restaurant’s roof is made of cedar. The interior is a fresh, crisp white, with the ceiling made of wooden planks. A huge glass window divider was installed to give guests in the dining area a clear view into the kitchen where the chef and his staff prepare the delicious meals.

“The idea was to show Bahamians what beauty we have on this island, the beautiful turquoise waters, being on the beach, going outside and enjoying an evening, having dinner and seeing the moon coming up – that’s something very special.”

The restaurant has a capacity of 250; it can accommodate 150 guests inside and 100 for outdoor dining. The tables and chairs are made of sustainable teak wood from Bali.

Being so near the sea, Ms Pagés said, it was important to use all-natural materials that are weather and salt water-resistant.

“We are an ocean-friendly restaurant where we don’t have any plastic; we wanted to show that you can do things without plastic,” she said.

Purchasing the deteriorating Stoned Crab was not an easy feat. First, Ms Pagés had to convince the former owner, Mario Donato, to sell to her. It would take three years before he finally decided to sell it to the very persistent six-foot blonde restaurateur.

“I asked him if he was willing to sell and he said ‘no’.

It was a three-year battle to get it from him, but finally we managed and I would love to bring it back in shape,” she had said in 2015 after purchasing the property.

Once the deal was complete, Ms Pagés was determined to restore the restaurant to its former glory.

“The idea was to show Bahamians what beauty we have on this island, the beautiful turquoise waters, being on the beach, going outside and enjoying an evening, having dinner and seeing the moon coming up – that’s something very special; that was the idea of bringing this back to Freeport,” she said.

Ms Pagés employs a staff of around 40 Bahamians. Bahamian Chef Ranwa Ferguson, the son of former Police Commissioner Reginald Ferguson, is the executive chef.

She also felt it a matter of importance to use local seafood products.

“I seriously was looking for a place for myself to go and have fish out of the ocean from here, not form Florida or anywhere else, but from here.

So we only deal with local fishermen; we only eat what we get out of here, except for the beef. So that was the idea

of creating a place where I would like to go, where my friends would like to go, and where Bahamians like to go,” she said.

Ms Pagés said they will launch a new menu in the coming weeks. “We will also add a little more Bahamian cuisine since a lot of Bahamians like to eat their own food,” she said.

Chef Ranwa said they support local farmers and fishermen by using organic local food items.

“Everything we do here is from scratch. We take pride in what we do. We use a lot of local organic items from all the local business people in agriculture on the island, and we support the local businessmen, fishermen, and farmers.

The food is much healthier, unique, and has a much better flavour,” he said.

When asked about the investment, she revealed that she spent a total of $3.5 million on the project, which was initially pegged at around $2.4 million.

“It is much more expensive to renovate than to build new.

But having this icon here...and everybody knows it already, and preserving something is always a good thing,” she said.

Another challenge that Ms Pagés experienced during the renovations was the lack of workmanship available on the island.

“We had challenges in that we are missing workmanship here. Almost everybody left from Freeport to Nassau and anywhere else to find good jobs since there was no construction in Freeport for a long, long time. Carpenters and electricians, almost everybody left the island. We are struggling with manpower right now, believe it or not, and that’s what took a while,” she said.

Today, the historic Stoned Crab has risen like a phoenix from the ashes and is ready to delight a new generation of diners.

To everything a season Most fruits and vegetables are available year-round now, says Jack Hardy, but seasons still matter

E

cclesiastes tells us “to every thing there is a season”.

Go to your favourite food store and you will notice a slight change in Ecclesiastes: for every thing there is a season somewhere.

The store will have all your favourite vegetables and fruits year round, but it lacks the satisfaction of picking and cutting your own crops. To get the best out of our garden in the upcoming vegetable growing period we must be aware of the productivity season of each sowing and our harvests will be greater if we sow and reap at the appropriate times.

Many seeds are best started in small pots or seedbeds and then transplanted to the garden area. These include broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, eggplant, kale, lettuce, peppers, spinach, and tomatoes. Others must be sown directly into the garden. These include beans, beets, carrots, corn, cucumbers, garlic, kohlrabi, leeks,

Winter squashes can be started now onions, okra, peas, potatoes, pumpkin, radishes, rutabaga, squash, sweet potatoes, and watermelon.

During September we can get several crops started: tomatoes and peppers, of course, but also cabbage, beans, cucumbers, scallions, snap beans, Summer and Winter squash, and possibly eggplant. Although eggplant grows quite well when started in September, I find it is reluctant to set fruit during the cooler months. By all means, grow one or two plants to prove me wrong, but save your main crop for a December to February sowing.

September may bring the Fall season, but it is still a hot month. Your potted seedlings may welcome a degree of shade and then be hardened off by moving into the sun by degrees before transplanting.

By the end of October our gardening conditions become close to ideal. During October we can plant beets, broccoli, carrots, kale, radishes and all

the September vegetables. It is a good idea to plant tomatoes every month until February to ensure a regular supply. You can make the process interesting by using a different variety or varieties each month.

By the beginning of November our mornings will be distinctly cool and misty and salad season starts. All the lettuce varieties and greens you love can be planted and within weeks you will be able to pick fresh salad makings whenever you please. Garden peas and snow peas are also started in November. Despite the name snow peas do well and are candidates for salads as well as stir fries. Also start cauliflower, kohlrabi, and celery.

November is the month to establish your culinary herb collection. Most herbs are best bought as seedlings from a nursery but others like cilantro are best grown from seeds. If you like to grow your herbs in containers, ensure the roots have plenty of room to grow

by using pots that are larger than you may think necessary.

Onions can be started in November in a seed bed and transplanted into rows during January. Or they can be left until December.

By December we should be eating quite a few vegetables from our garden. This is the time to take stock and ensure that by successive sowing we always have new plants as the older ones die or get eaten.

Use December as an assessment month and fill any gaps you have in your veggie menu.

December is the ideal time to plant garlic cloves that in early summer will be full heads. You can also grow shallots by planting one and reaping half a dozen later. It is also the recommended month for bulbing onions to be planted so they will be ready to pull in May. Each week for the next few months I will be dealing with these and other vegetables in my articles at the

recommended sowing time.

Make sure to check them out.

If you solarised your vegetable garden through the summer you will be removing the clear plastic covering in early October in order to sow seeds and make transplants. This is a good time to make amendments to the soil.

Solarisation kills off many beneficial bacteria so you may consider applying mature compost to the transplant holes. If you do not have compost available you can use sphagnum peat moss that has been well and truly soaked in water. An old zinc tub becomes very useful here. Do not add fertilizer to the peat moss. Sufficient nutrition will be absorbed at root level by applying fertilizer to the surface of the soil around plants and working it in an inch or so. Raw fertilizer at root level will burn adventitious roots and either kill the plant or set it back.

Another amendment that can be added at transplant time is commercial cow manure. The caveat here is a tendency to resist absorbing water once it has been dried out. You can overcome this to a great extent by adding cow manure with wet peat moss.

If you have compost you may wish to add it to a fivegallon bucket to the one-third stage, then add water. Stir every day and after a week or so you can add ‘compost tea’ around your young plants with no fear of burning their roots.

Replace the water after using the tea and fortify the brew with an occasion addition of mature compost now and then. I find a large-size plastic coffee container ideal for serving tea.

he best Bahamian dancers, marching bands, acrobats and soloists are being sought for the upcoming Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis event.

A search is hosted each year in hopes of finding new and exciting talent to be showcased at the tournament. Auditions will be held on September 14 in the Atlantis Theatre from 10am to 2pm.

The talent search was launched in 2011 when Atlantis began searching for people to be featured at its very first Battle 4 Atlantis basketball tournament.

“In keeping with our resort’s ‘Bahamas at Heart’ theme, we are hoping to tap into the local talent pool in search of the brightest and best Bahamian acts.

We would like to feature dancers, marching bands, acrobats, soloists to perform the Bahamian and American national anthems and other unique talents,” said Antonio Johnson, assistant director of special events at Atlantis.

Some of the top Bahamian entertainers have had their chance to shine on this platform, and Mr Johnson is encouraging anyone who believes they have what it takes to audition.

“Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis has allowed many persons the opportunity to showcase their talent on an international level. All of our games are televised live on ESPN,” he told Tribune Weekend.

Over the past eight years, Battle 4 Atlantis has seen performances from artists like Alia Coley, Paula Neely, Lady E, Patrice Murell, Bodine and Sammi Star, as well as the Royal Bahamas Police Force Marching Band, Bahamas All-Stars Marching Band and the Rhythm & Youth rake n’ scrape band.

our tournaments. Additionally, we have also been able to use persons selected from our talent search as entertainers around the property,” said Mr Johnson.

Ardastra field trips seek to make learning fun

W

ith the opening of the new school year just around the corner, Ardastra Gardens Zoo and Conservation Centre is set to roll-out its collection of field trips, combining the excitement of exploration with enriched understanding – valuable assets for creative teachers looking for an opportunity to expand the school’s curriculum beyond the four walls of a classroom.

“Our well-designed field trips and scheduled educational programmes reinforce what’s already been taught but also help students connect with the curriculum in a personal way, aiding in the retention of information surrounding the lesson,” said Bonnie Young, animal curator and education manager for the Bahamas’ only zoo.

From its “Zooniversity”, Ardastra offers a wide-range of lessons, guided tours and fun, team-building activities.

All lessons are aligned with the Ministry of Education’s science curriculum. Teachers are encouraged to request a course catalogue.

“When it comes to getting students primed for learning, our reputation is second to none. Students become rich in knowledge that wouldn’t have been readily available through a text-books only course of study,” said Ms Young.

At Ardastra students get to visit the only land mammal native to the Bahamas, the Bahamian hutia, once thought to be extinct. They can learn about the habitat, diet and reproduction cycle of the Bahamas’ national bird, the pink flamingo, or feel the smooth and wax like skin of the Bahamian boa – if they dare.

Students of the Meridian School make observations about native and non-native plants, measuring the diameter of spider webs in different habitats.

There are also close encounters to be had with Ardastra’s rainbow lorikeets, peafowl and parrots, while the pink flamingos go on parade three times a day.

With over 200 creatures representing 50 species at the four-acre facility, after spending a day at the zoo getting to know the animals, students leave excited about science and brimming over with new information, Ardastra said.

“We have dozens of educational topics that we can cover and customise by grade level, whether its teaching first graders about our national symbols, introducing sixth graders to endangered species and human impact on the environment, enhancing twelfth graders knowledge of biodiversity, or assisting a university student with an onsite research project, there is much to see and learn at Ardastra,” said Ms Young.

Originally opened as a botanical garden in 1937, Ardastra’s educational programmes cater to children of all ages.

For children five and under, Ardastra offers Tales for Tots.

During the interactive reading circle, toddlers, preschoolers and their parents engage in story-time, crafts, games, animal encounters and nature play.

Meantime, Ardastra’s Zooventures programme is reportedly popular with homeschoolers. Over the course of three hours, students gain hands-on experience in science investigation.

The first Zooventure for the 2019/2020 school year is scheduled for Thursday, September 26, under the theme, “Science Gone Wild.” Students will conduct scientific inquiries, group investigations, as well as participate in team challenges and animal interactions.

For those in search of community service hours in fulfilment of high school graduation requirements or looking for a way to get the entire family involved in saving the planet, Citizen Science Saturdays takes place once a month as a three-hour programme.

Each month, participants undertake a different citizen science initiative. By collecting and logging data in a group setting individuals learn how to contribute high quality data to scientists around the world.

While September and October are the best time to avoid crowds, meaningful interactions are available year-round, said Ardastra officials. A three-day notice is required for bookings with a 10-student minimum per field trip.

“Educators tell us students demonstrate better understanding of a subject matter because of the reallife connections and hand-on experience our field trips provide for primary, junior and high school students,” said Ms Young.

“By supplementing what students learn in the classroom an Ardastra field trip brings life to learning, making the subject more relevant to the student.”

She really suits this colourful jacket with a bodysuit underneath look. And while I’m kinda over thigh-high boots, they were the logical choice here.”

Cara says: “This outfit is a very funky little number, and I have to say she pulls it off. That jacket is awesome and I love the lace bodysuit underneath. And I agree that boots were really the only option for the outfit.”

Karin says: “This was also Normani’s night, so it’s a bit disappointing she didn’t do more with her red carpet entrance. This looks like a cheap circus outfit, and worse still, it doesn’t really fit her all that well; it looks lopsided and she seems uncomfortable.”

Cara says: “And the hot mess award goes to…. Honestly it’s tacky and cheap and fits awful.

I don’t like it at all. Adding the plastic shoes to the mix, and she looks like she be on a street corner not a red carpet, sorry to say.”

Karin says: “Halsey always comes through as the hot mess of any event. This outfit could not have cost more than $20. Those shiny black granny panties are already tragic, but then she had to top the ensemble off with that ugly studded belt and some leftover cheap orange material as a ‘dress’.”

Cara says: “I saw this outfit and honestly all that came to mind is this is Wonder Woman’s cousin who just wants to desperately share in some of the spotlight and glamour of her more famous relative. But it’s a horrid mess and doesn’t work.”

Karin says: “Taylor and her are basically wearing the exact same style. But Megan’s jacket does not fit her as well; it looks liked it’s straining, and it needed to be a bit longer.

Also, the boots needed to come up a bit higher. She looks kinda awkward in this.”

Cara says: “It’s very knightin-shining-armour inspired, isn’t it? All those metal studs.

Then you have the bralette and jacket hanging on for dear life, just about pop. And when you combine it with the studded boots it really is all a bit much.”

Digital dating proves complicated in

'Love at First Like'

ating in the digital age can be tricky business, especially when you project an image on social media that is in no way a truthful depiction of your relationship status. In “Love at First Like,” Eliza Roth accidentally leads her Instagram followers to believe that she is engaged and quickly learns that maintaining

a picture perfect life is extremely complicated.

Sophie and her sister Eliza co-own a jewellery shop in Brooklyn, New York. While Eliza pours all of her time into the artistic design of their pieces, Sophie manages the marketing and social media side of the business.

After discovering her ex-boyfriend is newly engaged, Eliza comforts herself

by trying on one of the shop’s most extravagant rings on a very important finger. She snaps a photo, saves it to her Instagram account, and wallows the rest of the night in self-pity.

The next morning, Eliza is shocked to learn that the photo is posted to her Instagram feed. The feeling of horror slowly morphs into intrigue. It seems

that her 100,000 followers have grown by several thousand more overnight.

Eliza makes the executive decision to continue the ruse, especially when the shop begins to welcome more patrons than ever before, thanks to the “engagement” post.

Sales are through the roof. She couldn’t ask for better publicity. When the offers of wedding sponsorships and donated gifts start filling her inbox, Eliza can’t help but to fall completely into the charade. She even posts a wedding date. The only way to move forward is to find a future husband.

Review: Rob Hart’s ‘The Warehouse’ is whip-smart thriller Futuristic thrillers such as “1984,” ‘‘Fahrenheit 451” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” succeed because the plots harbour more than a few kernels of truth that make the stories believable.

Add Rob Hart’s whip-smart thriller “The Warehouse” to that oeuvre. The engrossing plot not only seems that it could happen, but also, in many ways, is happening now. We have met the future, and it is here. Hart creates a world that seems as normal and plausible as your own neighbourhood but, at the same time, is frightening and devoid of freedoms.

The massive tech company Cloud claims to be the “solution” to a crumbling America as it dominates retail sales and the labour market. People are too afraid to go to stores after the Black Friday Massacres, events chillingly referred to in passing. Need a book, a razor, or a cooking utensil?

Just order it online through Cloud and it will be shipped immediately, arriving via a drone. MotherCloud’s mega

warehouses are located throughout the United States, where employees live and work. (No need to ever leave when everything you would ever need is there on the perfect climate-controlled premises.) Workers wear colour-coded shirts to show the roles they have — security, technology, packing the boxes — and CloudBands guide them throughout the facility and record each expense they incur.

“The Warehouse” is narrated by three characters — multibillionaire Gibson Wells, who started Cloud and is planning to visit as many MotherClouds in the “contiguous United States” as he can after learning that he is dying of pancreatic cancer, and two new employees. Paxton is a former prison guard who went bankrupt when Cloud ruined his startup and Zinnia is a corporate spy hired to infiltrate Cloud and possibly destroy it. It’s telling that the last names of only a few managers are known.

The intersection of these three characters and how Cloud affects each fuels “The Warehouse.” Mundane activities such as sleeping late or eating what is supposed to be the very best hamburger take on a chilling aspect when each moment of your life is recorded.

Beneath the facade of a utopia, Cloud teems with racism, sexual assault and betrayal. The expense of living at Cloud isn’t much different than those company stores where coal miners incurred debt they could never pay off.

Somewhere along the line Wells didn’t just create a business, he also bought the US government. “The Warehouse” explores which is more important: safety or freedom?

Hart has been making a name for himself with his critically acclaimed Ash McKenna series and as one of James Patterson’s co-authors. “The Warehouse” should be his breakout novel.

ean O’Connor, who was born in 1968 in Birkenhead, Cheshire, is a British producer, writer, and director working in theatre, film, television and radio. He produced the recent film version of Terence Rattigan’s “The Deep Blue Sea” – released in England in 2011 and starring Rachel

He also edited the BBC’s longrunning drama “The Archers” and was executive producer of the BBC’s “EastEnders”.

His Shakespeare adaptation of “Juliet and her Romeo” played to great acclaim at The Bristol Old Vic theatre; and his adaptation of John Osborne’s “The Entertainer” toured the United Kingdom in 2019.

Thus, it is quite extraordinary that a respected producer and director would be so fascinated as to write about a weird and savage killing that

took place in England 33 years before he was born.

Alma Rattenbury was brought up in Canada in the early 20th century. She

married, had a son, and then became a widow during the First World War. In 1923, she met the architect Francis Rattenbury, 30 years her senior, who left his wife Florence Nunn, whom he had married in 1898, and his two children, for the 27-year-old Alma Pakenham.

Francis Rattenbury had built for himself a considerable name and career – particularly after he designed the grand British Columbia Parliament buildings, opened in 1898.

More commissions followed in Victoria and other parts of the province, including additions to the legislative buildings. He worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway as their Western Division architect and received much acclaim for the chateau-style hotel, The Empress, which was built in 1909-1914. Rattenbury then switched his allegiance to the rival Grand Trunk Pacific Railway and designed many hotels for them – some not completed. Returning to the Canadian Pacific Railway, he built a second CPR steamship terminal in Victoria in 1923-1924.

As quickly as he became popular, his architecture went out of favour and his personal life began to show strains.

His maltreatment of his wife Florence, which included having the heating and lights turned off in their home after he had moved out, as well as the flaunting of his affair with Alma Pakenham, led his clients and former associates to shun him, forcing him to leave Victoria after he had married Alma in 1925. They returned to Victoria with her son Christopher and had a son, John, of their own, but left for

In Bournemouth, Rattenbury’s financial problems accelerated and his relationship with Alma deteriorated.

She began an affair with George Percy Stoner, their 18-year-old chauffeur who had been recruited through an advertisement in the Bournemouth Daily Echo, and who had been living a relatively sheltered and friendless life before moving into the Rattenbury’s home, the “Villa Madeira”.

Even without the murder, Alma Rattenbury would have been a compelling figure. She was an excellent pianist and wrote popular songs. She was a compulsive romantic who drank, took drugs, and lived expensively, if not outrageously. Her marriage was affectionate but sexless, and the couple occupied separate bedrooms. Every night the young Stoner went to Mrs Rattenbury’s bedroom and slept with her. She seemed overwhelmed by her feelings for him.

In the early hours of March 23, 1935, Rattenbury was discovered in his sitting room with severe head injuries. He had sustained a series of blows – savage enough to remove the back of his skull. He died four days later.

What followed was a sensational double murder trial.

Rattenbury’s wife confessed to the murder, but Stoner admitted to the housekeeper that it was he who had actually carried out the deed. Both Alma Rattenbury and Stoner were charged, although Alma later retracted her confession following a visit in prison from her son Christopher.

In his immaculately researched book on one of the most infamous murder cases of the 20th century, Sean O’Connor has unravelled a fascinating portrait of post World War England, with the horrific drama of the murder trial. It is a keenly intelligent book that spares nothing in its revelation of how a weakwilled teenager can turn into a savage and sadistic killer.

The Rattenbury’s “Villa Madeira” in Bournemouth, England, where the architect met is untimely death. is condemned by society but attains the sympathy of the public. It is a tragic and powerful story told by a masterful storyteller, who has left no stone unturned in explaining the dreary pessimism of the age. It is an immensely perverse and twisted story whose aftermath is even more of a surprise than the explosive trial at the Old Bailey.

George Percy Stoner was convicted and sentenced to death, later commuted to life imprisonment following

the submission to the Home Secretary of a petition signed by over 300,000 people who felt that the young Stoner had been manipulated into committing murder by the older woman. Alma, represented by the very able Ewen Montagu, was acquitted of murder and of being an accessory after the fact – but committed suicide a few days later on June 4, 1935, stabbing herself six times in the breast with a dagger before throwing

herself into the River Stour at Christchurch.

Stoner served only seven years of his sentence, being released early to join the Army and fight in the Second World War. He married in 1944 and fathered a daughter in 1948. He and his wife led a quiet life in the Bournemouth area, although he was to briefly attract media attention again when he was given two years’ probation for indecently assaulting a 12-year-old boy in a washroom in 1990. He died in Christchurch Hospital in 2000.

In spite of Francis Rattenbury’s outstanding and exemplary career as an architect in Canada, he was buried in an unmarked grave in a cemetery close to his home in Bournemouth. Seventy-two years later, in 2007, a headstone was erected as a lasting memorial – paid for by a family friend.

Fall Movie Preview: Hollywood goes all-in on original films NEW YORK (AP) — When 20th Century Fox greenlit James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari” — an original movie with a nearly $100 million budget — the director’s agent had some advice.

“Enjoy this,” Mangold recalled him saying. “This will be the last one of these you ever make.”

“Ford v Ferrari,” which viscerally recounts the efforts of

an automotive designer (Matt Damon) and a race car driver (Christian Bale) to build a Ford that could beat Ferrari at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1966, has a lot going for it: big-name movie stars, a director coming off an Oscarnominated hit (”Logan”) and a marathon, nearly hour-long racing finale. But it doesn’t have what typically scores such a large budget in today’s

Hollywood: franchise-making IP (intellectual property). It might as well be a unicorn.

“With the amount of mergers and streaming operations coming up to speed, I think there’s a real question whether the theatrical film is really just the tentpole. Independent films are struggling. Even mainline dramas are struggling to find an audience,” said Mangold, who has been a regular filmmaker at Fox, which Disney acquired earlier this year.

“In that sense, we’re a throwback film,” he continues. “We’re a modern movie in all the senses of modern storytelling, modern technology, modern sensibility. But we’re trying to do something that I really miss seeing in the movies, which is a movie for grown-ups that’s entertaining and thought-provoking and moving and isn’t selling you the same old thing.”

And this Fall movie season, in particular, Mangold is far from alone. Oscar season always brings a welcome wave of originality after the reboots, remakes and sequels of Summer. But this Fall is especially rich in big, audacious

bets on original films that will try to invigorate movie theatres with the most time-tested of methods: megawatt movie stars, genre twists, innovation.

“I do think we have to sort of fight back at this practice of overwhelming the market with the blockbuster,” Martin Scorsese, whose gangster epic “The Irishman” was bankrolled by Netflix after all the major studios passed, said in an interview earlier this summer .

The franchise films and sequels have far from receded.

On tap in the coming months are:

• “It – Chapter Two” (September 6) • “Downton Abbey” (September 20) • “Joker” (October 4) • “Maleficent 2: Mistress of Evil” (October 18) • “Terminator: Dark Fate” (November 1), • “Charlie’s Angels” (November 15) • “Frozen 2” (November 22) • “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” (December 20).

But many of the season’s most anticipated movies — “Ford v Ferrari” (November 15), “The Irishman” (November 1), the Brad Pitt space adventure “Ad Astra” (September 20), Marielle Heller’s “A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood” (November 22), with Tom Hanks as Mr Rogers — will be seeking audiences as much as they are awards.

Some are aiming to chart a new way forward for movies by not just relying on throwback thrills but literally turning back the clock. “The Irishman,” which Netflix has shelled out a reported $200 million to make, features digitally “de-aged” versions of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. In Ang Lee’s “Gemini Man” (October. 11), Will Smith, playing an assassin, faces off with a clone of himself, 25 years younger.

Lee, who experimented with 3-D on “Life of Pi” and high-frame rates on “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk,” believes the evolution of digital cinema is the future.

says Lee, whose latest is in 3-D and filmed at 120 frames-per-second, rather than 24. “You’re not watching somebody else’s story. You’re experiencing a story. It’s more immersive. Your attitude toward it is different. It’s a different language.”

“Gemini Man” will be major testcase for those possibilities that could, potentially, remake the theatrical experience years after the promises of a 3-D revolution largely fizzled.

“It’s hard to duplicate in the living room, let alone on a smart phone.

Eventually I’d like to see theatres change, the format of theatre: the size, the shape. And I hope someday some smart person can figure out a way to get rid of those glasses,” says Lee, chuckling. “What we’ve done here is a new baseline for digital cinema, I believe.”

Heller (”The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” ‘‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) is more focused on the communal aspect of movie-going, something that could be quite powerful for “A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood.” Heller is quick to caution that her film, based on Tom Junod’s 1998 Esquire article, isn’t a traditional biopic but dramatises the relationship between Rogers and a sceptical visiting journalist (Matthew Rhys), who functions as a kind of stand-in for cynics everywhere.

“At its best, it’s a collective human experience we get to have in making these movies and a collective human experience we get to have seeing these movies in theatres,” says Heller, who shot the film, with her young family in tow, around Rogers’ hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. That included filming at Fred Rogers Studio, where “Mister Rogers’ Neighbourhood” was shot.

Just as last year’s hit documentary “Won’t You Be My Neighbour?” ($22.8 million in ticket sales) proved, audiences are eager to reconnect with kind-hearted altruism of Fred Rogers.

“There’s a reason that everybody feels so connected to him right now,” says Heller. “I don’t know, some collective consciousness thing where we all want Mr. Rogers in our life right now — myself included.”

There are many other freshly original films on tap, too, including the Donna Tartt adaptation “The Goldfinch” (September 13), the stripper revenge tale “Hustlers” (September 13), Steven Soderbergh’s Panama Papers satire “The Laundromat” (September 27), Robert Eggers’ mad monochrome tale of 1890 lighthouse

keepers “The Lighthouse” (October 18), the Lena Waithe-penned black outlaw drama “Queen and Slim” (November 27), Noah Baumbach’s divorce chronicle “Marriage Story” (November 6), Kasi Lemmons’ Harriet Tubman biopic “Harriet,” and Edward Norton’s Jonathan Lethem adaptation “Motherless Brooklyn” (November 1).

The most affection ode to moviegoing might come, ironically enough, from Netflix. “Dolemite Is My Name” (October 4) stars Eddie Murphy as Rudy Ray Moore during the making of the 1975 Blaxploitation classic “Dolemite.”

A handful of filmmakers will also, for a moment at least, be stepping off the franchise treadmill. In “Jojo Rabbit” (October18), Taika Waititi will break from “Thor” instalments for a madcap Nazi satire in which he, himself, co-stars as Adolf Hitler. In “Knives Out” (November 27), Rian Johnson’s follow-up to “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” the writer-director crafts an elaborate Agatha Christie-inspired whodunit.

“It wasn’t a break in the sense of ‘Oh God, I’ve got to get out this Star Wars machine.’ It was kind of just the next thing I wanted to do,” says Johnson, who initially planned “Knives Out” as his follow-up to 2012’s “Looper.”

“But there was something really nice about the contrast of doing a very dialogue-based movie. I could hire all these fantastic actors and give them a lot of words. It’s just been an essential part of ‘Star Wars’ that to some degree you’re always trying to figure out the simplest way to say any thought,” says Johnson, who’s also developing a new “Star Wars” trilogy. “In that way, it ended up being a really invigorating and exciting film to make coming off of ‘Star Wars.’”

And there are few more delicious acting showcases than a murder mystery. The ensemble cast includes Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Lakeith Stanfield, Toni Collette and Michael Shannon.

“You’re going to see big movie stars just having the time of their lives up on the screen,” says Johnson. “There was something really appealing about having a character-based movie that wasn’t based on some heavy character arc but character-based in terms of a bunch of fun characters.”

Life-changing 'Power': Stars reflect on series’ impact

T

he series turned Starz into a must-watch cable network for many viewers, proved 50 Cent’s instincts correct, and along the way turned its characters into internet sensations and in some cases, household names.

While much of the show focused on Omari Hardwick’s character, James “Ghost” St Patrick, and his double life as a drug kingpin wanting to turn legit, its supporting cast proved equally compelling.

Ahead of the show’s sixth and final season premiere last Sunday, Hardwick and other cast members reflected on how “Power” changed their lives.

OMARI HARDWICK (James “Ghost” St Patrick) Omari Hardwick didn’t want to play Ghost after reading script for “Power,” because he was satisfied with being a backup co-star as he’d been on BET’s “Being Mary Jane” and the films “Beauty Shop” and “Sparkle.” But Hardwick’s wife encouraged him to take on the lead role. Best move ever.

Hardwick may not have had a problem landing roles before Power,” but he’s picked up even more in the last five years. He’s had prominent roles in “Sorry to Bother You,” ‘‘Nobody’s Fool” and “A Boy. A Girl. A Dream.”

He’s also filming “Army of the Dead,” starring Ella Purnell, Dave Bautista and Garret Dillahunt.

None of those roles was similar to Hardwick’s Ghost. The former college football said “Power” helped him land parts that showcased other facets of his acting.

“It’s definitely been a launch pad for me,” said Hardwick, 45, a native of Decatur, Georgia. “The great Al Pacino said, ‘I’m unemployed after every job that was over.’ He did alright for himself.”

world. He’s also Ghost’s best friend and business partner, who he often tries to convince to stay in the drug game.

Tommy is a fan-favourite, and given Sikora the most consistent acting work of his career.

“How has it changed my life? I’m able to pay my bills,” he said. “I don’t have to delegate where the money goes and decide on whether I’m paying the phone bill. Buying a gift for somebody’s birthday or just draw them a card. It’s nice to have options. It’s good to know where your food is going to come from, and not get the day old vegetables from Chinatown.”

But Sikora thought his breakout role would have led to more opportunities sooner.

“It was a much slower process than I was ready for,” said Sikora, 43, who appeared in a McDonald’s commercial as a teenager with Michael Jordan. The Chicago native starred on Broadway and has appeared in an array of TV shows including “Boardwalk Empire,”

‘‘Grey’s Anatomy,” ‘‘True Detective” and the film “Shutter Island.”

“I still audition. Unfortunately at a lower level than I was anticipating after the success of this show,” he said. “But whatever it is, I’m never afraid of hard work.”

It might be slower than Sikora hoped, but he’s staying busy. During his “Power” tenure, he’s starred in the film “The Intruder,” as Frog Jack in the TV series “Underground” and will star in the upcoming “Jacob’s Ladder” remake.

NATURI NAUGHTON (Tasha St Patrick) Naturi Naughton was best known for being one-third of the successful R&B girl group 3LW in the early 2000s. But now she’s grown and being recognised for her rough-riding Tasha St Patrick character on “Power.”

Naughton was a teenage sensation with the group that included Adrienne Houghton (formerly Bailon) and Kiely

Williams. She’s had a number of acting roles, including portraying Lil Kim in the 2009 Biggie Smalls biopic “Notorious” and appeared on Broadway in the Tony Award-winning musical “Hairspray.”

She credits her role as Hardwick’s gangster-minded wife with changing her life.

“I feel overwhelmed with gratitude,” said Naughton, who auditioned four times before she landed the part. “This show gave me the opportunity to grow as a woman. I became a mother on this show. I bought my first home, because of this show. It’s something I don’t take lightly. ‘Power’ has really been powerful in my life.”

Naughton said she is still trying to find acting gigs, but she’s been in the studio on her days off recording her own album.

J

ust as we hear a lot of talk about “Bahamian time”, we hear a lot about Bahamian English. Bahamian time is a euphemism for being late and “Bahamian English” is an apology for the shortcomings in our educational system. I have known too many Bahamians who were good at their trade, but were unable to pass the exams that were required for professional advancement. A specific case that always comes to mind is of an automobile mechanic who came to work for Trans Island Airways. He was a quick learner and the quality of his work rivalled that of licenced airplane mechanics, but he could not be promoted from assistant mechanic to mechanic unless he passed the FAA exam.

He had bought a book that was designed to teach wouldbe mechanics all that they needed to know to pass the FAA exam. The book came with three practice exams and if at the end of the course one could score a minimum of 70 percent on each of those exams, one might expect to pass the exam. My friend studied the book, but failed the exam, not once, but several times, so he remained an assistant mechanic who continued fixing planes – and fixing them well.

After a long talk, I borrowed his book/exams to get a clear understanding of the situation. I took three days to read the book and was able to get well over 70 percent in each of the practice exams – but I still could not fix planes. The problem was that my employee was not multilingual. He spoke

only “Bahamian”, and when I “translated” the questions into Bahamian he got the answers right.

As a child, I learned “Bahamian” from the maids and gardeners and English from my parents. If I couldn’t spell a word, I was told to “look it up in the dictionary”. Nobody explained how to look up something you can’t spell, but I grew to like dictionaries and was surprised when I first saw the full-size Oxford English Dictionary (OED). It was so big and contained so many words (about one million now) that I tend to think of its having one book for each of the 26 letters in the English alphabet. That’s almost true,

but some letters don’t have enough words to justify books of their own.

For my 40th birthday I was given a two-book “compact” edition of the OED. It came with its own magnifying glass, because the print was very, very small, but I could read it without using the magnifier. As I got older, I did need glasses, and the day came when I needed glasses and magnifier. Now, even with glasses and magnifying glass, I can’t decipher the print and I’ve developed a new appreciation for Wikipedia.

Until I read Simon Winchester’s 1998 book “The Surgeon of Crowthorne– a Tale of Murder Madness and

the Oxford English Dictionary”, I never thought about the significance of the OED – how it came into existence and changed the world of literature. It all goes back to 1857 when the London Philological Society came up with the idea for a new dictionary of the English language and enlisted volunteers, avid readers, to send examples of sentences that could illuminate the meanings of different words.

Every day, those volunteers mailed in thousands of “quotation slips” from books, newspapers and magazines. By the time the first edition was published, more than 2,000 volunteers had assisted the editors in its completion.

Dr William C Minor, a former military surgeon in the American Civil War, was not the most-prolific volunteer, but he was comfortably in second place and if you look at the OED you’ll find his name in the Introduction. Sadly, he was unable to accept the invitation to the party to launch the new dictionary, because he was serving a life sentence in the Broadmoor Asylum for the criminally insane, having been convicted of fatally shooting a man who he (erroneously) believed had been stalking him.

As I said at the start, English is the official language of the Bahamas and it is unfair to our children to let them graduate without their being able to read, write and speak English, on which the OED is the leading authority.

M

y readers are very used to seeing me write about the connection between animal and human.

I have a tendency to focus mostly on companion animals, perhaps because I am very devoted to my five delightfully spoiled dogs.

I flick through stories on the internet daily and I have a couple of special friends who kindly share articles that they think will be of interest to me and that have potential; that certainly is a blessing, I can tell you!

One story recently caught my eye and my attention; it took place in the sea off Australia. It features a manta ray called Freckles.

Manta rays are truly the gentle giants of the undersea world. Magnificent in size and stature, they glide through the water gracefully, moving their large and strong wings like a dancer moving through the night.

Two divers were in the water near the Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia, when a large manta approached them.

She just came up to them and stopped. She was so close that they could see that she had fishing hooks embedded under her eye. It was as if she was

showing them and asking for help.

One of the divers swam down to her, time and time again, gently removing the hooks from under her eye.

Each time he went down to her she stopped so that he was able to touch her, and she waited patiently while he removed them all.

The diver told the BBC that when he goes back to the same spot to check on Freckles he sees that she is doing well and he feels sure that she recognises him. He points out that mantas are able to recognise individual mantas, so perhaps she was able to recognise the diver who helped her so generously.

Over and over we hear stories and see video clips of brave and compassionate divers going to great lengths to save a marine creature.

There is some amazing footage of a whale who was frightfully caught up in fishing net and was near death when a family came across her. She was floating on the surface, exhausted and resigned to die.

They immediately radioed for help, but were told it would be at least an hour before anybody could come. They felt she couldn’t wait so they decided to do it themselves.

All the stories are touching, but I have a soft spot for the manta ray. They are so beautiful to watch swim; they are harmless and awe-inspiring.

Back-to-school hairstyles Beyoncé’s ‘Lemonade’ braids a big hit

t’s back-to-school time, which means the days of vacay-style hair are over and moms start thinking about the perfect style for their daughter’s first week back, as well as those all important new school year photos for social media.

While boys are easy – just run them to the barber and get a “fresh cut” – mothers of girls have a harder time.

“For me, I want my morning routine to be as easy as possible, so I am looking for hairstyles that don’t require too much maintenance,” said Lisa, a mother of two girls, aged seven and four. “All I really want to have to do is a quick brush-up and add a bow or a barrette and be done.”

This type convenience is why many little girls will be getting their hair braided this weekend for the start of the 2019 school year.

Braided or plaited styles are a great way to keep hair stylish and fixed, and the fact that they can last for several weeks, once properly maintained, is an added bonus,” said Tisha Johnson of Kids Plug.

“I grew up watching my two big sisters do hair and I decided to take up cosmetology in high school and I started braiding hair.”

She explained that this year the two most popular styles she has been asked to recreate are the “Lemonade” braids (side braids similar to what Beyoncé wore in her “Lemonade” video) and braids with afro kinky hair attached to the ends for added curls.

Tisha said that once the hair is plaited, she would advise moms to use mouse and tie the hair in a stocking cap overnight to ensure that it remains neat for the next day. This way the hairstyle can last two to three weeks.

Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” era braids have inspired back-to-school styles this year.
