Fourth Poker Run is a success for boating and charitable organisations

T

he Bahamas Poker Run co-founders, Jordan Lampkin and Shane Freedman, have concluded that by all accounts the 2019 edition of their popular marine event was another great success.

The fourth annual Bahamas Poker Run (BPR) took place recently in North Eleuthera with more than 60 registered vessels and 300 plus captains and crew in tow. Throughout the day, playing cards were distributed towards a five-card draw poker hand. By the luck of the draw, the captain with the best hand (a flush) was awarded the grand prize pot of $5,000.

On the morning of the event all boaters assembled at Palm Cay Marina in New Providence, starting out together on the 25-mile journey to North Eleuthera. Consecutive checkpoints throughout the islands included: Meek’s Patch, Wreckers Restaurant and Bar in Spanish Wells, and Tay Bay Beach, where a culminating beach party took place on the pink sand beach of mainland Eleuthera, just steps away from the historic Preacher’s Cave. As event-goers enjoyed an open bar of Sands Beer, Fireball Whisky, Monster Energy, Aquapure Water and various other beverages, beach games and competitions, participants were also encouraged to visit the cave and national monument.

“A huge part of BPR’s mission is about exposing boat-owners and Bahamians to experience and appreciate what our unique shores, historic landmarks and national sea parks have to offer. We thoughtfully select our route and the recipient charities that benefit from the event with

Over the past four years BPR has donated more than $30,000 to Bahamian nonprofit organisations, including the Bahamas National Trust, which in celebrating its 60th anniversary. This year, the BNT is the recipient of $10,000 and the Bahamas Red Cross Society received $2,000 as a result of BPR’s turnout and support from Bahamian businesses.

“Our charitable donations are an important part of this event and an ongoing commitment to do our small part as Bahamians. We surely could not have contributed as generously over the years without corporate support and the do-gooders who attend BPR boating events throughout the islands of the Bahamas year after year,” said Shane Freedman.

The seafaring event has garnered necessary support from local partners who understand that the Bahamas is a prime destination for boating and are thrilled to sponsor an allBahamian event.

The Bahamian Brewery and Beverage Company returned

for a fourth consecutive year to provide its signature Sands Beer, other locally brewed products, and Fireball Whisky.

General Manager Gary Sands said: “Bahamas Poker Run is not just fun to be a part of, it’s well organised, highly produced, and attracts a great crowd.”

Another positive outcome of the event is its ability to bring together a cross section of the Bahamian boating community. Whether it be private boat owners, commercial fishing charters, engineers and mechanics, or simply beachgoers, patrons of BPR agree it was a thrilling day on the water.

“We are always pleased to see so many of our clients attend Bahamas Poker Run. Numerous Mercury powered boats – some boasting over 2000hp – showcased with confidence the power that Mercury engines have to offer and made quite a statement on the run,” said Maryann McSweeney, general manager of Lightbourne Marine.

Kamilah The US visa she holds designates her as an individual “who possesses extraordinary ability”.

And the young singer is determined to prove she possesses this ability as the takes on the Big Apple. She tells AvaTurnquest all about life in this unique musical microcosm.

F

rom her lips to the ears of her audience at a small, intimate club in the Lower East Side of New York City, comes a voice that soothes the soul. The effect Kamilah’s vocals have on the crowd in their enamoured looks; they seem to be left breathless by her effortlessly cascading notes and her clear, confident lyricism.

“This is a bit of a meditative thing for me and I might lose myself in it,” she tells the audience during a brief interlude, “can we all just take a deep breath real fast, is that all right with ya’ll?”

The Mercury Lounge becomes an echo chamber, and the energy swells. Her audience is transfixed as she croons about her journey of love for others, but most importantly, herself.

“Honestly, not for nothing, but it’s untouchable the talent

she has,” said Katie Jones, artistic manager at National Sawdust, where Kamilah previewed her debut EP “Learning Curve” earlier this year.

“There’s something a little bit of throwback, little bit of newness, and little bit of rawness that I think everybody really connects with innately. She’s just so raw and so personable and so honest in her execution, but also in personality.”

Ms Jones, 31, added: “New York represents this pulse that a lot of different people can’t put their fingers on anywhere else, and I think music is like innately living here within these communities that not necessarily everybody knows about, which is mad exciting to me. I need to be here and be a part of it, and that’s the complete reason I work with her, because she is an example exactly of that.”

With “Learning Curve” just a few months away from release, Kamilah’s set on July 24 was also her inaugural gig as the holder of a hard-fought American O visa. O visas are granted to individuals who possess an extraordinary ability, or who have a demonstrated record of extraordinary achievement in the motion picture or television industry.

It’s an achievement Kamilah does not take lightly.

“I worked really really hard,” she said after her set. “Getting a visa to stay (in New York) and do this... was a painful process and one that really weighed on my psyche... working a job that I wasn’t feeling fulfilled in or didn’t feel valued at for four whole years in order to be able to build a portfolio to stay.

“All of those things are part of the story, and when you’re in it, you can’t really reflect on it, you just have to do all the time, and now I’m finally in a

place where it’s like I’ve convinced everyone. I’m a artist full-time. It’s overwhelming, but in a very beautiful way.

She continued: “I feel a sense of freedom coming on, and I also feel a lot of responsibility to prepare myself for this new chapter because I’m not playing any games. I have no games to play with this, this is the moment I’ve literally lived my whole life for.”

Of her upcoming EP, Kamilah said: “It is a series of reflections and experiences, so experiences and then reflections on those experiences.

Things that I’ve learned, things that felt like a steep learning curve, things that blindsided me and I had to learn from

after the fact, about love mostly, and intimacy and relationship challenges.”

Kamilah is relentless when it comes to her creative process, focused on technical excellence, which extends to her full band, who are all independent artists.

The line-up includes: Ronnie DiSimone on guitar; Tariq Al Sabir playing keys and offering background vocals; Tiger Darrow on cello; Josh Bailey on drums, Michelle Osbourne on bass; Rachel Winder who switches between saxophone and flute, and Kola Rai and Taj Sapp as background vocalists.

For the July 24 set, Kamilah played lead guitar and used a loop station.

It is clear the group of young artists all hold an immense amount of respect and love for each other.

“The basis of our relationship has always been sorta writing songs together,” said Mr DiSimone, who has produced most, if not all, of Kamilah’s work.

“I wish the (’Learning Curve’ EP) was in the world; it will be soon. She’s sitting on a lot of amazing music, it’s exciting.”

“It’s something that fuels my soul,” added Ms Darrow, 26.

“She brings such a positivity and an energy to everything that working on her record makes me feel like inspired to work and better myself and my music. Because making her happy, seeing Kamilah happy, is an experience.”

Ms Darrow continued: “Being able to learn from each other and grow from each other’s experiences in a musical and creative way is something I’m so grateful for because I would have never listened to Junkanoo if I hadn’t met Kamilah, and that was huge for me.”

While Kamilah still considers herself a newcomer to the New York scene, she cuts her teeth with heavy-hitters during a weekly jazz improv session called “Producer Mondays”

at the club Nublu in the East Village.

“What’s beautiful about New York,” said Kamilah, “is that there are so many incredible, talented people. What I love about New York is the access to so many people I can learn from, incredibly talented people who have studied the craft of making music in a very intentional way, in a do or die, I don’t care if I make any money, I don’t care if my parents are here for it, kinda way.

“This is... such a passionate place, and the thing about New York specifically, as a musical microcosm, is that musicality is so important here. Even more than lyricism to some degree, the ability to play well is valued so highly here, and so I’m forced to

check myself and learn on a regular basis.”

Kamilah has never formally studied music, but she used her time at the New York University to network with fellow music students and continued to cultivate those connections long after she graduated with her Masters in Media Culture and Communication in 2014.

Mr Al Sabir said: “Kamilah has such a strong influence on my creative process. I’m a black American and Kamilah is a black Bahamian, and it means a lot when we can get together and access so many things out of the diaspora to come together on one stage.

It’s such a display of blackness internationally, and I think that’s such a valuable important thing that we keep incorporating and will continue to develop.”

On stage, Kamilah ends her set with a deeply personal, meditative number that brings jazz and Junkanoo drums together.

“I feel like New York is teaching me how to love myself more, so that I don’t look for it anywhere else,” she said. “It’s always with me; it’s interesting. I think every time I go home I feel like I’m being pushed a little outside of the ‘home-ness’ of it. Because I’m doing things here, there is a perception that I’m further away from people home who are also creating, and I’m not. I think about them all the time. I’m so inspired by them all the time, because I want to do things here so I can help people who don’t have the same kind of privileges or access that I’ve had.

“I think there is this dumb thing about being away and having this new kind of appreciation for home and everybody there. When you’re in it, you don’t value people as much, or you don’t value the beach as much, how we talk as much. Because you’re in it and you hear it all the time, and you’re kind of numb to it. We are so beautiful and so capable and so talented, and so full and I love that. And I love that that is part of me.”

Speaking about future projects, Kamilah said: “The goal is to unify through our own sound and sort of find my own way to relate to and connect to home in this new body and new life I’ve been living.”

The song “Dark Skin Coconut Oil” will close out her “Learning Curve” EP, and hopefully open the door for deeper exploration in her second album that is already on the drawing board.

“Coconut oil makes a golden glow when sunlight hits, pretty for the dark skin girl, darker than a tamarind,” she sings, “…the beauty in mirrors is hard to find, for that you find someone to blame… every loc is a rebellion, all our beauty is the same, the grass ain’t greener on the other side babe, all our struggles come from pain.”

ncouraging people to be the best version of themselves is something motivational speaker and hip hop artist Alexander “Stacs” Hepburn is very passionate about. So it’s no surprise that his latest single, “Be Yo Self”, is about

building self-esteem and fits in perfectly with his “hip hope” brand of music.

Stacs first fell in love with music when he was 10 years old. At the time, rappers like Lil Bow Wow were blowing up and he wanted to be just like them. He became fascinated with the songwriting process.

Determined to pursue a career in music, Stacs spent the majority of his lunch breaks during high school battle-rapping other self-proclaimed rappers on campus for bragging rights.

“In 2010 I launched a local rap group and to this day I am still pursuing the dream. But I am mainly known for my contribution to youth ministry throughout the Bahamas,” he told Tribune Weekend.

His “hip hope” songs have all included messages that inspire, motivate, and address relevant topics such as bullying, issues of self-esteem, mental health and other social ills.

Stac’s new song, “Be Yo Self”, the and accompanying music video, has a similarly positive message. And so far, it has been well received on social media.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, Stacs

said low self-esteem and not knowing who you are can be a battle that people fight on a daily basis, so he wanted to be offer encouragement to his listeners.

“I’m the type of artist that hears the instrumental first, then writes. When I heard the beat I just started saying, ‘Be yo self, be yo, be yo, be yo self’, and it stuck with me so I ran with it. With the music video, the idea was to create something that caters to both (women and men), so it’s pretty simple. I’ve never been an artist that liked complex music videos because I want people to do more hearing

than they do watching, so the game plan was to get the message across and have fun,” he said.

“I want to put out more music videos, and honestly, do more promoting. I really want to reach more people and grow my brand so I’ll be pushing more in that regard. I have an EP, “Alexander”, available on all streaming platforms so people can just search ‘Stacs’ on Google and various links will show up. hen most people go on vacation they return with photos, fond memories and a few souvenirs tucked away in a suitcase.

However, when Brent Johnson and his wife returned from a recent trip to Italy they came back with a more tangible memento – the idea for a new business: their gelato bakery, The Sweet Life, located in the Mall at Marathon.

“My wife and I were first introduced to gelato on a trip to Italy and we just fell in love with it and really thought that it would be something that we could replicate here,” Mr Johnson told Tribune Weekend.

To begin the process of opening a business they first hired someone to come in and teach them the art of creating fine, authentic gelato, making sure that the product they sold in their store lived up to the gelato they had enjoyed in Italy.

“Gelato is different from ice cream in that it has less fat and less air, so when you churn it, it is more dense and that makes the flavour more intense,” said Mr Johnson. “There are suppliers who will provide you with a powder base,

but we didn’t want to take shortcuts, and so you have a real authentic taste with our product.”

While gelato is an Italian delicacy, the Johnsons, however have given their version a Bahamian flair with locally inspired flavours such gin and coconut water, sweet potato, scarlet plum, soursop, and even a Kalik Radler infused gelato.

“We use whatever fruits are seasonally available and a bit of our imagination,” said Mr Johnson, explaining how they create their menu items.

“It’s a family affair,” he added. “We will be sitting around and someone will think of a flavour and then we will play around with how to bring it about. We currently have about 40 flavours on the menu.”

The Johnson family affair continues with the making of baked goods, which are also on sale at their store – goods such as chocolate cake, guava duff, cupcakes, cheese cake and assorted cookies.

“My wife makes them,” said Mr Johnson. “She has a science background and so she understands the chemistry behind food.”

The Sweet Life is open seven days a week at the Mall at Marathon.

Since experimenting with her very first Hennessy infused ice cream, Ladawn has branched out to using gin, eggnog, Jack Daniels whiskey, Ciroc vodka, Baileys Irish cream, coconut rum and peach schnapps in making her treats.

“I plan to be just as huge as HäagenDazs. My plans before the year is out are to branch out to the Family Islands and to recruit an investor for 18 & Over Sweet Treats to become global.”

s you sit home in your dark and hot house, courtesy of BPL, why not treat yourself to a cool and sweet cocktail in the form of a dessert? That is the thinking of Ladawn Whylly, a young businesswoman who just started her ice cream brand, 18 & Over Sweet Treats, this June.

“You may find this funny, but Bahamas Power & Light made 18 & Over Sweet Treats the perfect Summer option. You can sit home, relax, cool off and get sweet, refreshing, satisfying booze,” she told Tribune Weekend.

The idea for this unique business came to her after seeing a YouTube ad for Hennessy flavoured ice cream. The ad really stuck with her and she started thinking this kind of product could be a good idea to introduce to the Bahamian market.

“One evening I got up and went to the store and purchased the products and made the ice cream. I then posted on my WhatsApp status that I needed five individuals who love Hennessy to try something, and in little to no time I had some very willing taste testers. The feedback I got from taste testers was very inspirational so I decided to pursue the idea,” said the 28-year-old mother of two.

Ladawn describes herself as a girl who was born in the “bottom” of Bain and Grants Town, with a dream of being successful some day.

A corrections officer by day, Ladawn has always been passionate about owning her own business, and has tried her hand at many different things.

“I’ve already been in the business of selling kids’ clothing, women’s shoes, kid’s snacks, and now rum-infused ice cream. I am determined to make

my dreams and aspirations become a reality.”

Out of all her ideas, she said not in a million years would she have thought this particular idea of making alcoholic treats would garner the most support from the public.

“I took my idea and brought it to life. Becoming a business owner, I definitely feel at times there are a lot of things I’ve given up in order to pursue my business. One of those things, and probably the hardest one, is time with my two kids. The struggle makes it all worth it to me. Running your own business is really a tough game, but if you are passionate with your game then doing extra push-ups can be done with

ne of the great joys of the vegetable pre-season is rummaging through seed catalogues, even though these days this is mostly done through the internet. My favourite catalogue is Johnny’s, because it not only advertises its wares, it tells you how to grow them. The problem these days is that if you buy your seeds online from here in the Bahamas you will spend a lot of money.

Jack Hardy expands on how to choose the right tomatoes and peppers for you A better solution is to visit your favourite nursery. The seeds are right there and you can start planting as soon as you get home. If there is a specific seed you need that your nursery does not carry I am sure they will do their best to get it for you; mine does. Do not feel as though you are being unfaithful if you visit other nurseries during your

seed hunting days. The seed houses all have different emphases and the more you investigate the greater your chances of getting exactly what you want.

I have one catalogue that is called Totally Tomatoes, which is a bit of a lie because it does feature a few pages of peppers and one of some other vegetables. That shows how many tomato varieties there are out there. I would suggest you buy a packet of what you might call your standard, a reliable performer that you know will be the backbone of your tomato garden. My choice is Celebrity, a medium-sized fruit on vines that bear quite heavily. The bonus is that Celebrity is nematodes resistant and that is an important factor in our local gardens.

After choosing your standard tomato you can allow yourself the indulgence of experimenting with more exotic offering. If your main tomato is red or pink then you can buy seeds of different coloured tomatoes. Black Krim and Cherokee Purple are top dark varieties with excellent flavour. They are also heirloom tomatoes that allow to save their seeds for next year. Green tomatoes, strange as it may sound, are among the juiciest and fullest flavoured of all tomatoes. Yellow and orange tomatoes tend to have less acidic pulp and this is important to many people.

Sweet peppers are almost as important as tomatoes. Our national cuisine uses peppers very liberally and to be short is very inconvenient. I suggest you sow many more sweet pepper seeds than you think you need. I do not have a particular favourite and usually have California Wonder, an heirloom variety, at hand. Chinese Giant, also heirloom, ripens to a glorious red. Hybrid varieties tend to be more productive over the length of a season.

A regular bell pepper starts off green and after it is full it turns red. If you allow the green peppers to turn red you will slow down the production of the plant and even encourage it to take a month or two off. Green peppers really

should be harvested once full and still green. If you want red peppers than sow separate seeds of a red variety. We have become used to yellow and orange peppers and these are a lovely addition to both our gardens and our kitchens.

They are more expensive than green in the food store but the same price when grown from seed.

I have noticed over the years that Cubanelle, huge long heirloom peppers, have become very popular. They ripen red but are usually sold fresh at the light yellow stage for their crispy texture.

Seeds from yellow Cubanelles will not grow because they are too immature; you have to collect from full ripe red specimens.

Anaheim type peppers are also large, long and pointed. These are popular because they have a mild pepper kick that is all that many people need. They can be stuffed Mexican style and used as rellenos, a lovely barbecue side dish.

The most popular hot pepper of all is jalapeno, a large fruited type that has a very wide range of pepperiness. Some are pleasantly mild while others are quite ferocious. I prefer my jalapenos to be mild; after all, there are plenty of other peppers that have heat. The distinctive flavour of jalapeno makes it ideal for slicing in rings and adding to dishes at the cooking stage, or spicing the rings with a flavoured vinegar to use as a condiment.

Bahamians have fallen in love with habanero peppers over the past decade or two, just about replacing the traditional goat pepper. Habanero (pronounced ‘havanero’) peppers are distinctly hot and make their presence known.

Bird peppers remain the favourite with most Bahamians for use in conch salad, boil fish, and souses of all kinds.

Your local nursery will probably not have bird peppers for sale and you will have to get your seeds from gardener friends. Twenty years ago Hurricane Floyd left Abaco without bird peppers.

The drought lasted for almost two years as gardeners shared valuable seeds and restored bird peppers to gardens and restaurants.

Cabbages can be started quite early in pots and later transplanted to the garden. Look for robust large varieties that make growing them worthwhile.

Cabbages are heavy feeders so keep them well fertilized without overdoing matters.

We should have something green in most of our meals. Spinach and chard are two greens that can be eaten raw or cooked. Both take quite a while to get established so an early start will pay dividends. Most of our salad makings will have to wait until cooler conditions prevail before planting.

Damage caused during a recent break-in will cost the Dundas a total of $10,000 in repairs.

U

nless pledges are made into tangible funds, the Dundas Centre for the Performing Arts – the heart of theatre in the Bahamas – will be limited in what it can offer the community in the near future. Dundas officials are still working feverishly to repair the theatre as quickly as possible after being burglarised last month.

A fundraising campaign was launched shortly after the Dundas was broken into and vandalised by unknown individuals. Since then there has been an “outpouring of verbal pledges” to donate funds to the cause, however, actual money is needed now.

“So many individuals have been outraged that someone could break down a place that represents the building up of so many. However, we now need the pledges to transform into tangible funds so that we can continue the work of rebuilding. We have made some repairs that now need to be paid for, so without actual funds we’re limited in what else we can do or in covering what has been done thus far,” said Patrice Francis of Ringplay Productions, the executive team that manages the theatre.

During the burglary, a 50-inch TV, a DVD player and a surveillance DVR were taken. In the main theatre,

every locked interior door was destroyed.

The exterior door to the Black Box Theatre was also forced open. All communications technology in the theatre — security cameras, cable and telephone wires—were damaged. Both alarm keypads were ripped from of the walls and both alarm panels destroyed. A kitchen sink was also broken. The total cost of the damage is estimated at $10,000.

“In addition to replacing the interior and exterior doors and other security measures that were compromised in this recent act of vandalism, we need to construct a wall so that the property can be properly closed off from trespassers. Without a wall, we leave ourselves open for other unwanted acts,” said Ms Francis. “Also, there is a long list of repair items that preceded this recent vandalism. Having to address what was recently destroyed hinders our efforts to get a much needed roof, renovate bathrooms and the porch.”

So far, a little over $2,000 has been raised from the campaign. “In addition, an individual donated a preowned car for us to auction or raffle and apply the funds to our repair efforts,” said Ms Francis.

Additionally, the Dundas is getting ready to unveil its annual Shakespeare in Paradise festival which usually features four productions.

“Hundreds of students matriculating in our local schools come through these theatre doors each year and are exposed to excellent Shakespeare and

Ticket sales certainly do not cover all we need in terms of stage set, music, art, costumes, refreshments and the electricity to run two theatres. We need help. Individuals and organisations may donate time, money or material,” said Ms Francis.

The festival kicks off on September 30, and this year there are approximately 80 people involved in the event, including 60 performers and around 20 people serving as directors, support crew or volunteers.

Between their relaunched Repertory Season and Shakespeare in Paradise, Ringplay Productions will have mounted nine shows at the Dundas this year.

“In addition, the Dundas board rents out both theatres on property (the Winston V Saunders theatre and the Philip A Burrows Blackbox) so that other production companies will have a space to rehearse and perform. We can’t afford to stop, which is why we cannot afford these senseless interruptions to the business of developing Bahamian talent and expanding the

experience of quality theatre in our Commonwealth,” said Ms Francis.

The Dundas’ manager, Delores “Reds” Adderley, encourages all who can to donate to the restoration of the centre.

“People need a place where they belong,” she said. “The Dundas is that place, not just for those of us who have been around the theatre for decades, but for a cadre of new actors, directors, producers, writers and support team members who share this vision of mounting excellent theatrical productions in the Bahamas while developing Bahamian talent for local, regional and international consumption. The Dundas belongs to all of us. We need a place where the next Sir Sidney Poitier, the next Winston V Saunders, the next Philip A Burrows, the next Dr Nicolette Bethel, the next Cookie Allens can come and be, and be developed and shine.”

Tarea hopes to be unforgettable as Miss Bahamas Universe

area Sturrup realised her life-long dream when she won the hearts of fans and judges to win the title of Miss Bahamas Universe 2019 last Sunday.

The Grand Bahama native beat out 10 fellow competitors at the pageant grand finale which was held inside the Atlantis Ballroom.

“My grandmother was diagnosed with dementia (which is the basis of Tarea’s platform). This was a strong push for me during the competition,” she said.

“Becoming Miss Bahamas is something I’ve longed for since childhood.

Even though I am passionate about modelling, the dream of representing my country at Miss Universe provides young women with an opportunity to present their ideas and ideals to millions. So I’m excited and humbled by this opportunity. I am super excited going forward to represent my country as the 2019 ambassador,” she told Tribune Weekend.

The event’s finale lived up to the hype that was whipped up during 12 weeks of intense preliminary training and competitions.

Audience members were invited to prepare themselves for the “Bond Experience”, with the contestants portraying secret agents who stole hearts with their intellect, beauty and platform advocacy.

Pageant director Anthony Smith explained: “For almost 12 weeks the contestants of Miss Bahamas Universe prepared for this defining moment, balancing edginess, elegance, education and entertainment. With the charming and witty presence of Chester Robards and his superb co-host, Stacy Campbell Marshall, this show demonstrated how innovative and inspiring pageantry can be. “ Entertainment included a James Bond swimsuit scene complete with “beef cake bouncers” and musical numbers by My Miss Teen Bahamas Scholar’s Adria Albury, and

Miss Bahamas Universe Tarea Sturrup.

The finalists included: Miss Universe Paradise Island Michelle Louidor as the fourth runner-up; Miss Universe New Providence Tenielle Adderley as third runner-up; Miss Universe Andros Natalya Pratt as the second runner-up; Miss Universe Abaco Nyisha Tilus as the first runner-up.

Tarea will soon be travelling to New York for further grooming and campaign-building of her platform on dementia, also known as “Forget Me Not”, ahead of her participation in the international pageant in December.

Junkanoo Summer Festival '19 offered total cultural immersion

“A

culturally immersive experience” is the description that just about sums up this year’s Junkanoo Summer Festival, which saw some of the country’s best performers take the stage to entertain crowds of both locals and visitors alike.

And once performances wrapped, each night of the festival culminated with the sounds of goat skin drums and cowbells during an hour-long rush-out.

Presented by the Ministry of Tourism, the festival was held at Arawak Cay every Saturday from July 20 to August 17. Each Saturday, the venue overflowed with Bahamian culture, local food, crafts, music, heritage games, an exciting kiddie corner, and the pulsating sounds of Junkanoo.

There were musical performances by artists like Sweet Emily, the Rhythm Band and the Spank Band, Nehemiah Hield, Fanshawn, Lady E, Geno D, and Keisha Poitier, to name a few.

Bahamian entertainer Avvy was one of several performers who brought the final night of the festival last week to a close on a high note.

“It was actually my first time seeing Avvy perform and I must say he is truly an

entertainer. He had the crowd going and he was just truly energetic,” said Crystal, who attended the showcase for the first time ever. “Since it is an annual event I think I am going to make my attendance an annual one, too.”

Lerone, who said he attended the festival three Saturdays in a row with the exception of the closing show, said he thoroughly enjoyed the daytime activities, which included fun cultural games like crab-catching and pineapple-eating contests.

“They had a lot of food vendors out too who served some good things. There was one man who made fresh cane juice, and man that was good,” he said. “I really enjoyed the event. It felt like you are on the island enjoying a regatta.

Nice, clean, cultural fun.”

Officials of the Ministry of Tourism and Aviation said Junkanoo Summer Festival has grown tremendously.

Latoya Busby, store Manager of Little Switzerland, another main sponsor, said their company was also happy to be a part of the festival. The jewellery company provided prizes for the festival’s Golden Ticket promotion – a Movado watch and a necklace.

“We thought, what better way to support the Bahamas than by supporting Junkanoo Summer Festival. We feel truly happy to support Bahamians.

This festival has blown my expectations away. Seeing our Bahamians enjoy themselves for absolutely free and to get this level of entertainment is just out of this world,” said Busby.

Cara says: “This is another sheer look that is just giving me beach cover-up vibes rather than an actual look.

It’s just not my kinda of thing.

But hey, points for the unicorn handbag. At least that is a somewhat unusual, tongue-incheek fashion accessory.”

Karin says: “I wish people would change things up.

Everyone seems to be going for the same look: extra long, bright coloured hair.

But at least the hair looks better on Siaani than that ill-fitting jumpsuit. Her mom, meanwhile, looks a bit better.

I like the belted coat and matching girl power earrings, but could have done without the thigh-high boots.”

Cara says: “Let’s start with Siaani. There is sexy and cute, and there is too tight and not cute. Need I say more? It’s a no from me. Mama’s outfit is a bit better, but still doesn’t do it for me. I kept looking at it trying to figure it out until I went to Google and realised it said ‘Girl Power’, so I won’t hate on a positive message.”

Karin says: “I’m not feeling this DIY sewing project. All it is, is your basic black bodysuit with a sheer sheath dress on top sporting a hideous floral pattern. Some of the flowers even have rhinestones! It’s just ugly all around. The big earrings are also not helping the look.”

Cara says: “I tend to be a bit wary of these dresses which feature visible undergarments because you can have a lot of granny panty action on. I love the pattern on her overlay, but honestly I am feeling more of a beach cover-up than fancy red carpet outfit.”

Karin says: “This is probably the best look of the week. I actually really like this African style print and matching hairstyle on Vina. And I love the cut of this jumpsuit. The only thing I don’t like are those matching platforms; they look way too clunky with all this print going on.”

Cara says: “Vina is definitely giving off African princess vibes in this pantsuit, and OMG she is coordinated with a capital C, right down to the matching shoes...you know me, I love being matchymatchy. That ponytail is giving me ‘Coming to America’ vibes for sure.”

Financial expert helps introduce first ever YOUTH blockchain event to Bahamas

Blockchain technology is behind digital currencies such as Bitcoin.

W

hen the financial crisis of 2008 hit the world, Rhonda Elridge saw first-hand the devastating effects it had on banking industry workers who suddenly found themselves unemployed and lacking prospects.

She herself was affected after accepting an offer to relocate from the Bahamas to work for a finance company in New York.

Throughout the course of her career she has been a strategy consultant for Gecko Governance and has over 25 years of financial services experience at leading global firms, including PricewaterhouseCoopers, ABN Amro (Fortis) and UBS. She previously held country and regional managing director positions at Fortis Prime Fund Solutions (ABN Amro), overseeing operations and

business development roles, respectively.

“I was working on Wall Street when the crisis happened and so I saw first-hand how it disrupted people’s careers and their lives,” she told Tribune Weekend.

It really made her start to think how there needed to be some way to help people rebound so that they didn’t need to lose their homes or their money.

“I had heard all these stories from persons who had been displaced,” she said. “I think that over time I heard more than 8,000 stories from people who had their entire lives changed. I knew people, who after losing their jobs, committed suicide.”

Eventually, Rhonda’s desire to help people led to her starting a nonprofit organisation called Harness All Possibilities. The organisation’s mission is to encourage professionals or anyone in work transition to become

Rhonda Eldridge and Stefen Deleveaux “unstuck” by embracing a growth mindset for 21st century engagement.

She explained that work displacement can result in disillusionment and disconnection, which can unravel human dignity.

Harness All Possibility is a network community which offers event discussion forums, resources, information, programmes and tools which seek to encourage professionals to think beyond their current profession and think about harnessing infinite possibilities.

The programme encourages participants to embrace lifelong learning in preparation for the technology of the future.

Since starting the company, Rhonda has organised about 50 events that have been attended by up to 2,000 people

at times. In the near future she will be attending Devcon – a major international conference for developers to be held in Osaka, Japan – on a full scholarship.

And now she is bringing her expertise back home for a special event to help young Bahamians this weekend.

The event is the Bahamas’ first CryptoChicks Youth Hack-A-Thon Blockchain and AI conference.

The first of it kind, the event is a collaboration between CryptoChicks, Harness All Possibilities and the Rotary Club of Nassau.

Blockchain is a record keeper that can be stored on anyone’s computer connected by the internet.

Blockchain is protected by a locking anti-hacking mechanism called cryptology. Information

inside a blockchain is stored in blocks that are connected to each other by cryptology and form a chain. It is the technology behind digital currencies such as Bitcoin. It is shared data distributed over multiple computers at the same time.

It is useful to promote ease of doing business and the participants will use the technology to solve problems specific to the Bahamas and then pitch their solutions to stakeholders.

Rhonda explained that the event is similar to the popular television show “Shark Tank” in that some of the solutions formulated this weekend may be utilised by real companies.

Participants will be sorted into five hack-a-thon tracks with a cash prize for each. The tracks include: ‘Build Your Business’ for participants aged 18 to 25 and another session for participants who are up to 17 years old.

The younger participants have not been excluded, there is a special category for them, the ‘Build Your Blockchain’ game which will be open to children up to 12 years old.

“We really wanted to bring education within reach and show people that there are many ways that they can learn,” said Rhonda. “We solve the problem of learning by finding the tools that they need to be educated.”

Marvel's involvement in 'SpiderMan' movies may be in doubt LOS ANGELES (AP) — With great success comes great re-negotiation. In the wake of the announcement that “Spider-Man: Far From Home” is now the highest-grossing film ever in Sony Pictures’ history, reports surfaced that Marvel Studios may be stepping away from the cross-studio partnership.

The Hollywood trade Deadline reported Tuesday that there was a disagreement over the profit-sharing structure.

According to a person close to the deal who was unauthorised to speak publicly, negotiations are not yet final.

But the suggestion that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige may

not produce future live-action “Spider-Man” movies and that the character itself might not appear in any more Marvel Cinematic Universe films quickly turned into a trending topic.

Sony has held the rights to the Marvel character since 1985, but in 2015, announced a partnership with Disney and Marvel that would allow Spider-Man to be used in MCU films like “Avengers: Endgame.”

It also allowed for Feige to serve as a producer on standalone “Spider-Man” movies like “Far From Home.”

The crossovers have been well-received by audiences and critics. And the teenage web-slinger has been made into a central component in the MCU with a close relationship to Tony Stark that drove the story lines in both “Endgame” and “Far From Home.”

NEW YORK (AP) — The 25th James Bond movie has a title: “No Time to Die.” Producers announced the moniker Tuesday for the film that has long been referred to simply as “Bond 25.”

“No Time to Die” returns Daniel Craig to the role of 007.

Lea Seydoux, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw and Ralph Fiennes return as cast members. Rami Malek plays the villain.

“Phase 4,” Spider-Man also has no official MCU appearances planned.

Two standalone “SpiderMan” movies are, however, reportedly in the works from Sony which would bring back director Jon Watts and star Tom Holland. Sony has also created its own web of Spider-Man spinoffs, including the Oscar-winning animated feature “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” and “Venom.”

A few setbacks have marked the production. An explosion during shooting at Pinewood Studios in June injured a crew member and damaged the sound stage. Craig hurt his foot in May while performing a stunt in Jamaica that required minor ankle surgery.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Keanu Reeves and Lana Wachowski are returning to the world of “The Matrix.”

Warner Bros Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich says Tuesday that a fourth “Matrix” is in the works.

Reeves will be reprising his role as Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss will return as Trinity in the film that will be co-written, directed and produced

by Wachowski, who co-created “The Matrix” with Lilly Wachowski.

FILM SET WITH KEANU REEVES AND CARRIEANNE MOSS Lana Wachowski says in a statement that the ideas of “The Matrix” are more relevant than ever now and she’s happy to have the characters back in her life.

Emmerich says Wachowski is a true visionary.

The first film hit theatres 20 years ago and spawned two sequels that cumulatively made more than $1.6 billion at the global box office.

No release date has been set.

raditionally, weddings usually lead to some fun and games in the bedroom for the happy and exhausted couple. In the new horror-thriller “Ready or Not,” that’s definitely true — but the games aren’t always fun.

Samara Weaving has a breakout performance as a new bride who tries to stay alive until dawn after her wedding day as her in-laws hunt her down and try to kill her. (Talk about an awkward brunch the next morning.) It’s a wellplotted film that excellently mixes gore and humour while also offering some social commentary by torching the clueless rich.

Weaving plays Grace, a foster kid who yearns for family, who marries Alex Le Domas, the scion of a wealthy family that built its fortune on games.

Whenever a new member tries to join the clan, they have a “weird family ritual” — they play a game. Sometimes it’s checkers or Old Maid. Sometimes its hunt-down-the-newcomer.

This last possibility is not exactly well communicated by her betrothed, surely a candidate for Worst Groom Ever, played by Mark O’Brien. “It’s not too late to flee, you know,” he tells her. She replies, but without knowing the full consequences: “No, thank you. I’m all the way in.” Grace then, unfortunately, picks the most dangerous game of all.

But this time, the Le Domas family has found a worthy challenger. Grace will not go quietly, ripping her wedding dress so she can be more mobile — a nod to Uma Thurman’s angry bride in “Kill Bill” — ditching her heels for a pair of Converse high tops and fighting back. “This doesn’t end well for you,” she is warned.

The filmmakers have a fun time chasing the bride and an ever-exasperated family — which includes a deliciously nasty Andie MacDowell as well as Kristian Bruun, Melanie Scrofano, Henry Czerny, Nicky Guadagni, Adam Brody and Elyse Levesque — but they also have time for some digs at the hypocritical ultra-wealthy.

The poor Le Domas servants are the first to meet their demise, mowed down by accident by the drug- or drink-addled aristocrats. “Why does this always happen to me?” one rich in-law wails after her crossbow shoots an arrow into a maid’s skull.

A portrait emerges of a family desperate to hold onto its exclusivity and privilege, even to the point of murder.

They may wear dinner jackets for dinner but they’re truly savage.

What gets wonderfully communicated is Grace’s will and power.

Weaving, the niece of Hugo Weaving (”Lord of the Rings,” ‘‘The Matrix”), has a comfort with horror — she’s been in the series “Ash vs Evil Dead” and “The Babysitter” — but absolutely shines in this tricky role. She’s vulnerable, deadpan funny, scared and resolute, turning a role that could have been one-dimensional into something vibrant and authentic.

Toward the end, she seems to draw on such wells of anger and fury that she makes haunting animal noises. If this actress — probably best known for a memorable turn in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” — often gets confused with Margot Robbie, a few more roles like this and that may end. She’s murderously good.

A comic writer's rise to fame and fall from grace Sir Christopher Ondaatje writes about the Englishman who was one of the greatest comic writers of the 20th century and who created a marvellous array of characters based in an imaginary land among the Edwardian British upper class.

elham Grenville Wodehouse was born in Guildford, Surrey – the third son of Henry Ernest Wodehouse – a magistrate resident in the former British colony of Hong Kong.

The Wodehouses claimed to be able to trace their ancestry back to the 13th century and the Earls of Kimberley.

Wodehouse’s mother, Eleanor, was visiting her sister in Guildford when he was born there prematurely.

The young Wodehouse sailed back to Hong Kong where he was raised by a Chinese servant with his two elder brothers, Peveril and Armine. When he was two, the brothers were sent back to England and boarded in a house adjoining that of Eleanor’s father and mother. His parents stayed in Hong Kong and were virtual strangers to their sons – quite a normal situation for colonial middle-class families at the time – which left emotional scars on the children. However, Wodehouse had a relatively happy childhood. His nanny was strict but kind and the boys

P G Wodehouse (1881 - 1975) were sent to school first in Croydon, and then to Guernsey. Wodehouse was then sent to Malvern House Preparatory School in Kent, which he later parodied as a “penitentiary...with the outward guise of a prep school.” He and his brothers were shunted about in holidays to various uncles and aunts.

In 1894, when Wodehouse was 12 years old, he was sent to Dulwich College where he established a stable life with some continuity. It became his home and he distinguished himself at cricket, rugby and boxing. A report from Dulwich College in 1899 stated: “He has the most distorted ideas about wit and humour; he draws over his books and examination papers in the most distressing way and writes foolish rhymes in other people’s books.

with enthusiasm and good sense about it.”

Wodehouse’s six years at Dulwich were to be among the happiest of his life. He edited the school magazine, The Alleynian, and remained dedicated to the school for the rest of his life.

Disappointed not to follow his brother Armine to Oxford, as the family had suffered a financial reversal (because of a declining rupee against the pound), Wodehouse was relegated in 1900 to a junior clerical position in the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation in London. He hated it, but stuck it out for two years during which, from humble lodgings in Chelsea, he wrote a series of articles for Public School Magazine, Tit-Bits, and The Captain – a new magazine for boys.

In 1901, with the help of a Dulwich master, William Beach Thomas, he got a job writing for The Globe’s “By The Way” column. He kept the job for eight years. His first novel, “The Pothunters”, was published in 1902, and it was followed by other publications – mostly fiction on public school life. “Mike”, about a brilliant cricketer, was published in 1909.

Always fascinated with America, Wodehouse had saved enough money to go there. He sailed for New York in 1904 and later recalled:

“In 1904 anyone in the London writing world who had been to America was regarded with awe and looked upon as an authority on that ‘terra incognita’ ... After that trip to New York I was a man who counted ... My income rose like a rocketing pheasant.”

Wodehouse’s other fascination was the stage and he was lucky enough to be invited in 1904 by the librettist Owen Hall to contribute a lyric for a musical comedy “Sergeant Brue”. His lyrics for “Put Me in the Little Cell” for a trio of comic crooks was well received and launched Wodehouse on a career in the theatre that lasted over three decades.

In 1914, Wodehouse married the widow Ethel Wayman. She brought her daughter Leonara into the marriage, whom Wodehouse came to consider as his own.

“There are pleasant little spots my heart is fixed on, Down at Parkhurst or at Portland on the sea, And some put up at Holloway and Brixton, But Pentonville is good enough for me.”

In 1906 the actor-manager invited Wodehouse to become resident lyricist at the Aldwych Theatre where he collaborated with the young Jerome Kern on a comic number for “The Beauty of Bath” titled “Mr (Joseph) Chamberlain”, which became for a while the most popular song in London.

by P G Wodehouse in 1908 in “The Lost Lambs” became a watershed in his literary development. Both Evelyn Waugh and George Orwell regarded this as a turning point in Wodehouse’s career. Wodehouse later admitted that he based Psmith on the hotelier and impresario Rupert D’Oyly Carte:

“The only thing in my literary career which was handed to me on a silver plate with watercress around it.”

“Carry On, Jeeves” is a collection of 10 short stories Wodehouse from 1925 – were all adopted for his new character – featured in three more novels: “Psmith in the City” (1910); “Psmith, Journalist” (1915), set in New York, and “Leave it to Psmith” (1923), set at Blandings Castle.

Wodehouse made a second visit to New York in 1909 and sold two stories to Cosmopolitan and to Colliers for a much higher fee than he had been given before. He resigned from his position on The Globe, stayed in New York for a year, and sold more stories.

But no one was prepared to give him a permanent income. So he returned to England, rejoined The Globe, and started contributing to The Strand magazine.

Wodehouse visited America several more times, and was in New York when the First World War broke out in 1914. Ineligible for military service because of his poor eyesight, he remained in the US throughout the war. In September 1914 he married Ethel May Wayman, an English widow, the marriage proving to be happy and lifelong. They had no children but Wodehouse loved his wife’s daughter Leonora and legally adopted her.

Wodehouse’s songwriting partner Jerome Kern introduced him to Guy Bolton in 1915. Bolton would become his closest friend and collaborator. His lyrics to “Miss Springtime” (1916) were very successful, and were followed by “Leave it to Jane” (1917), “Oh, Boy!” (1917-1918), and “Oh, Lady! Lady!”

(1918). Wodehouse received much

praise for his lyrics and he and Bolton went on to write more shows.

Wodehouse’s literary experiments in fiction were also gaining public acceptance. “Psmith, Journalist” had mixed comedy with social satire, and the Saturday Evening Post paid $3,500 to serialise “Something New” – which became a series of novels set at Blandings Castle – his first farcical novel and his first best-seller (published in England as “Something Fresh”). It was as a farceur that P G Wodehouse became famous. Extricating “Young Gussie” (1915), the first story about Bertie and Jeeves, was published. Wodehouse wrote about these characters for the rest of his life. The Blandings Castle stories, set in an English stately home, depict the attempts of the placid Lord Emsworth to evade the many distractions around him – young lovers, an exuberant brother Galahad, domineering sisters, super-efficient secretaries and his prize sow – the Empress of Blandings. The Bertie and Jeeves stories feature an amiable young manabout-town, regularly rescued from the consequences of his idiocy by the benign interference of his valet.

Lord Emsworth is a kindly dunderhead who makes his home at Blandings Castle. The apple of his eye is the peerless sow named Empress of Blandings – twice in successive years winner in the Fat Pigs Class at the Shropshire Agricultural Show. But will the Empress make it three in a row?

Maybe not: Lord Emsworth’s fiendish rival, Sir Gregory Parsloe-Parsloe of Matchingham Hall, has come up with a prodigious new challenger in the Queen of Matchingham. Enter Lord Emsworth’s crafty brother, who plots the abduction of the new Parsloe sow. This in turn leads Sir Gregory’s pigman, George Cyril Wellbeloved, to pig-nap the Empress! Which in turn leads to a complicated romance unfolding at the Castle.

It was during the 1920s that the fame of P G Wodehouse really took off.

Sales of his books steadily increased.

He polished his existing characters and introduced new ones. Two new characters were The Oldest Member, featuring golfing stories, and Mr Mulliner, telling tall tales to fellow patrons at the bar of the Angler’s Rest.

Other stories were about members of the Drones Club. They captured a golden age of innocence and were a gentle satire of his own class – each character a humorous exaggeration of real-life characters. Evelyn Waugh once described Wodehouse’s imaginary realm as “a world that cannot become dated, because it has never existed”, except of course in the author’s masterly prose which invites you to enter and participate in his blissful comic kingdom. Hilaire Belloc considered him to be the greatest writer in English. He spent time in Hollywood where MGM gave him a contract – but the studio found little for him to do.

His 1930 contract was not renewed – and his short stories, set in Hollywood, were unsparing satires about inefficiency and a waste of expensive talent.

The Wodehouses returned to England where they had a house for several years, but Wodehouse continued to cross the Atlantic to New York where he spent considerable time. He worked there in the theatre collaborating on musicals on Broadway and in the West End: “Sally” (New York, 1920): “The Cabaret Girl” (London, 1922), and “Rosalie” (New York, 1928). He wrote the plays: “The Play’s the Thing” (1926), and “A Damsel in Distress” (1928). During the 1930s his theatrical work decreased. He wrote four plays for the West End, and collaborated with Bolton on the book for Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes”.

Instead he concentrated on his novels and short stories and reached the peak of his productivity, producing two books a year and grossing over £100,000.

Difficulties with tax authorities in both the US and in England forced the Wodehouses to move to France where they bought a house near Le Touquet in the north. He was stunned when the University of Oxford conferred an honorary doctorate of letters on him in June 1939.

At the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 the Wodehouses remained in their Le Touquet house where the Royal Air Force had a base.

withdrew – offering him a sole seat in one of its fighter aircraft. He refused as it would have meant leaving behind his wife and their dog. Instead they decided to drive to Portugal and then fly to the US. But their car broke down and they returned home. The Germans occupied Le Touquet on May 22, 1940 and Wodehouse was sent to prison – first in Loos, then Liège in Belgium, and then to Tost in Upper Silesia (then Germany, now Toszek in Poland).

In June 1941 the Gestapo took Wodehouse, who was approaching 60, to the luxury Hotel Adlon in Berlin

where he stayed at his own expense – living off the German royalties of his books. He was not allowed to leave Germany. Shortly afterwards he was trapped into making five broadcasts to the US via German radio, with the Berlin-based correspondent of the Columbia Broadcasting System. The broadcasts, aired on June 28, July 9, 23 and 30, and August 6, were titled “How to be an Internee Without Previous Training”, and contained humorous anecdotes of his experiences as a prisoner of war. The German propaganda machine made sure that the recordings were broadcast in England. The day after Wodehouse’s final recording, his wife Ethel, who had sold most of her jewellery to pay for the journey, joined him in Berlin.

The reaction to Wodehouse’s broadcast in England was horrific and hostile. It attracted bitter criticism that he was indifferent to the war and sympathetic to Germany. He was reviled as a traitor, Nazi propagandist, and a coward – living in luxury while England suffered. The BBC broadcast a particularly vituperative programme railing against Wodehouse, who contacted the Foreign Office through the Swiss Embassy in Berlin, explaining his actions and offering to return to England, but the German authorities refused to let him leave. Several authors including Compton Mackenzie, Sax Rohmer and Dorothy L Sayers came to his defence, but the furore continued.

The Wodehouses remained in Germany until September 1943 when they

were allowed to leave for Paris. They were there when the city was liberated on August 25, 1944. Wodehouse immediately reported to American authorities the next day instructing them to inform the British authorities as to his whereabouts. He was visited

by Malcolm Muggeridge of MI6, and Major Edward Cussen of MI5, who formally investigated him. Cussen’s report stated that Wodehouse’s behaviour “had been unwise” but advised against further action. On November 23, 1944, Theobald Matthew, the Director of Public Prosecutions, decided that there was no evidence to justify prosecuting Wodehouse.

In July 1946 the Wodehouses received American visas and sailed for New York in April 1947. However, the America that they had known before the war was not the same. There was no welcoming reception, and the magazines that had paid him well were now in decline and didn’t need him. There were money problems too. Funds were tied up in England and Wodehouse had no immediate ideas for a novel. He did not complete one until 1951. Unsettled, the Wodehouses left New York for suburban Long Island where his friend Guy Bolton lived in Remsenburg – part of the Southampton resort area. In 1952 they bought a house nearby and lived there for the rest of their lives.

Between 1952 and 1975 Wodehouse published more than 20 novels, as well as two collections of short stories, a collection of his letters, and a volume of his memoirs.

He continued writing, reviving his Jeeves and Wooster stories. Despite his war-time broadcasts his success as a writer grew and grew, but he never again returned to England. He continued to live in the US, taking dual British-American citizenship in 1955.

In his lifetime he published more than 90 books, 40 plays, and 200 short stories. To his great delight he was made a Knight Commander of the British Empire (KBE) six weeks before he died on February 14, 1975. He was 93 years old.

he book “Wooden Ships – Iron Men: Four Master Mariners of the Colonial South” by J G Braddock, a relative of William Lyford’s, turned my thoughts to the countless Bahamian seamen who sailed their wooden crafts between our 700 islands and, quite frequently, to other nearby ports.

Kendal Butler made an in-depth study of Bahamian boats and boatbuilders, as yet unpublished, which paints a picture of how important these individuals were to the economy of our islands.

Boatbuilders and boatmen connected a settlement to the outside world. An island without these

skilled trades was dependent on others to bring in needed supplies.

Our archipelago is spread over some 100,000 square miles of sea, much of it very shallow and laced with coral reefs, where careful navigation is essential, yet in the heyday of Bahamian sailing boats, there were few shore-based aids to navigation and GPS had not yet been invented.

Sailboats depend on the wind and the direction from whence it blows. Seldom can the captain point his bow toward his destination, as can a boat with an engine, yet the majority of the sailors had little schooling and no gadgets to help them, not even a compass to point the way.

Their handmade ships were built of wood, but the sailors must have been cast in iron. With ragged sails and hulls that leaked, it is a wonder that they

were expected to reach harbour. But reach it they did, and the travellers were always welcomed with joy.

So, how did they avoid getting lost, particularly at night? In daytime they have the sun, moving from east to west, and the changing colours of the sea. In the dark of night, the moon is not as reliable as the sun, for there are nights when the moon is never to be seen, so they navigated by the stars, even though they seldom knew the correct name of any star. Nor do I. One night, in the Exuma Cays, an elderly sailor claimed he could find Nassau at night and he pointed at one particular star that would take him to Nassau. I checked my compass and found that he was spot-on.

A passenger, on a night flight from Inagua to Nassau, surprised me when he told his companions that we were passing Acklins. He had seen, and recognised, the two white flashes every 20 seconds signal of the Castle Island lighthouse.

Sometimes a vessel would run into trouble and needed help, and the Rev Daniel Wilshire, pastor of the Salem Union Baptist Church (when it was on Parliament Street), was so concerned for their safety that he built the East End Lighthouse, at the eastern end of New Providence, an area where the water is very shallow, to help the sailors coming in from places like Cat Island, Crooked Island and San Salvador, the Exumas, Inagua and Long Island.

T

he emotional support animal is becoming quite the thing nowadays and I suspect that it is actually being abused by people who do not want to put their dearly loved pet in the hold of the aircraft, and be beholden to the safety features of the individual aircraft to ensure that their pet arrives healthy at the other end.

I honestly do not blame them, because you hear all too frequently of beloved fur family members being frozen to death, overheated, no water, or lost, running around for days scared and alone on an airport with planes flying overhead. The entire thing is seriously scary and I totally get it.

Actually, if people abuse the emotional support animal loophole it is really the airline’s fault for making it so difficult to travel with a dog or other animals under normal conditions.

If an owner is willing to pay the extra, and they have all the papers required, then the dog could travel next to them.

I fail to see that it matters if they are an

emotional support dog, or just a dearly loved pet. Many, many, of the service dogs that you see today travelling are just that, dearly loved pets, and why not?

It is time for the airlines to wake up and provide a service that attracts and comforts their passengers. Not all flights have to be pet friendly; they could choose the less busy schedules, and not all sections of the plane have to be pet friendly.

Airlines could still limit the number of animals on the flight at any one time. But for heavens sake, provide this necessary service!

I know so many people here in Nassau who fly their dogs by private aircraft to Fort Lauderdale and then drive them to California, Canada, and all points in between. Why? Because of their love for their fur babies.

They agree to allow animals on board, especially dogs, with what may be questionable credentials. Why not up the ante and find a way for good folks to travel with their pets without cheating. There is my challenge to the world’s airlines.

In a recent article the New York Times reported that some of the animals who are registered are not emotional support animals; they said, “face it, sometimes a pet is just a pet.” What exactly does that mean? “Just a pet.” Perhaps what we are really missing here is that most all pets are emotional support.

Perhaps everybody who owns and loves an animal is really depending on their pet for some form of emotional support.

I know that if I come home stressed and they greet me and follow me to my desk, and are so happy to see me, that I feel so much better. I always think what a comfort and support it must be for people who live alone to be greeted so warmly and have their pet to talk to during the evenings.

Interestingly enough I went online to see how complicated it is to register a pet as an emotional support support animal.

From what I did and saw, it was tremendously easy and as far as I can tell I have registered Chiefie. It cost me just under $40 for a certificate. I could have spent a whole lot more money on a special vest, collar and tag. Uploading the photo was optional and the sex and breed was not required. There are other websites which require a little more information, and one that asks for a mental health provider or doctor to write a letter stating that you need the animal on the plane for your emotional or health well-being.

Here is a list of some of the disorders that could require an emotional support dog: anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, mood disorder, panic attacks, fear/phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicidal thoughts/tendencies. That is a pretty wide spectrum to choose from.

They say that the animal must be trained, and behave well with strangers, you are required (according to the website I was on) to alert the airline 48 hours prior that you will be travelling with a emotional support dog and that there is no fee.

It seams to me, if it is this simple, and the airlines don’t charge, they would be wise to slip in there a category for loving pet parents who would be happy and willing to pay for a ticket for their fur baby (or feathered friend?) and travel safely and happily to their destination.

I am sure that many emotional support animals are for real, but I am also convinced that many of them are not. People are concerned for their pet’s safety. Why not just create another category of passenger for air travel and make everybody happy?
