parents, guardians and well-wishers could revel in the joy of knowing their children had begun to master a musical instru ment. Band members were clad in white, longsleeved shirts and black pants for the occasion. The music genres which youngsters studied were vast. The first segment was geared toward Baha mian music, followed by sacred music, followed by popular music of the 1980s and ’90, including hits like "Eye of the Tiger" and “Chariots of Fire", and culminating with "Come Go With Me Back to the Island” and "Bahama Rock".This recital was the pro verbial icing on the cake to cap off the intense twoweek crash course. Every day for two weeks, band members would begin the day with praise and worship and biblical lessons and then they would be divided into the various disciplines. In one group of students, they studied percussion instruments, while another group learned about woodwind instruments and others studied the brass

Emily Wales, CEO of Planned Parenthood Great Plains, said giving a pregnant woman infor mation about abortion care is guarded under free speech pro tections in the Constitution. "We've heard from providers who aren't sure if they can make referrals, if they can even tell people to go to Planned Parent hood's website or abortionfinder. com," Wales said. "We don't think there's any controversy about being able to tell people what their options are and that they can access care in another state."Others, however, are more concerned. No charges have been filed in the seven weeks since the law against advising or helping a woman get an abor tion went into effect and it's not known whether anyone is being investigated. Messages left with several Oklahoma prosecutors about how they plan to enforce the anti-abortion laws were not returned, and the head of the state's District Attorneys Coun cil, Kathryn Boyle Brewer, said the issue hasn't been formally discussed by prosecutors at its regularSenatemeetings.President Pro Tempore Greg Treat, an Oklahoma City Republican who wrote the trigger law, said he believes those who help a woman get an abortion should be prosecuted, although he said it's unlikely prosecutors would go after a pregnant wom an's family "Absolutely, members.ifyou're going to aid and abet in a felony, you should be held responsible," Treat said. "Where the bigger issue is is where these corpora tions are offering to pay $4,000 to help you kill an unborn life and knowingly go around Okla homa's statutes.

3. You control the sound but I control what I hear This is my least favourite part of road trips. The incessant drone of a radio station that I have no interest in. I’ve learned to drown out the noise – an excellent practice for those who are experiencing any momen tary loss of control. Learn to drown out the naysayers. I did it by denying access to anyone who would speak negatively about myself or even the entire situation. I dwelled on God’s words about me and filled my space with prayerful declara tions. I listened only to those who saw me as a success. And, if no one else said it – I said it to and of myself. Life is a road trip. Sometimes we are the driver. At other times we end up being passengers in our own story. Either way, our determination to reach destiny, our positive perspective and killing the negative noise makes us winners, every time. Even after pain and loss, you are far fromGoddone.bless you this week!

2. You may control what I look at but I control what I see. Perspective is everything! When life deals you a crush ing blow, it is your outlook alone that can determine just how you emerge. I never even once considered that my fail ure, would be seen as resilience or strength. Then, one day I received a phone call. Someone asked, very humbly, “Ayanna, how did you do it?” It gave me an entirely new perspective and I understood that when the con trol seems to be lost, you can still come out victorious, you can still win. I can’t tell you how many persons, women in par ticular, have gained strength because I now see my new life as an unfolding triumph.

STRICT anti-abortion laws that took effect in Oklahoma this year led to the quick shuttering of every abortion facility in the state, but left questions for those who work directly with women who may seek their advice or help getting an abortion out of state.Beyond the profound reper cussions the abortion laws are having on medical care, espe cially reproductive medicine, clergy members, social workers and even librarians have raised concerns about being exposed to criminal or civil liability for just discussing the topic. Those fears are well-founded, says Joseph Thai, a professor at the University of Oklahoma who teaches about constitutional law and the Supreme Court. He described Oklahoma's new antiabortion laws, which include both criminal and civil penalties, as the strictest in the nation so far and sweeping in both substance and scope. The U.S. Supreme Court's decision in June to overturn Roe v. Wade and remove women's constitutional right to abortion immediately triggered a 1910 Oklahoma law that makes it a felony, punishable by two to five years in prison, for every person who "advises" or provides any other means for a woman to pro cure an abortion. That law allows abortion only to save the moth er's"Thatlife. all-encompassing lan guage can make anyone and everyone who helps a woman get an abortion or provides information about access to abortion — including a spouse, another family member, a friend, a classmate or co-worker, a librarian, or even an Uber driver — a felon," Thai said. "Likewise, employers who have pledged to pay for their employees' abor tions as part of their reproductive health coverage and their insur ance companies face criminal liability."Although Alabama, Arizona and Texas have laws prohibiting "aiding and abetting" a woman in getting an abortion, Oklahoma's is the strictest and the only one currently in effect, said Elizabeth Nash, a state policy analyst for the abortion-rights supporting Guttmacher Institute. While former providers in Oklahoma may have halted abor tions, they haven't stopped giving advice.

Road trips. They may take moments. Other times, they can be never-ending sagas of countless rest stops, food runs and madeup games to pass the time. Coming from this small archi pelago, the idea of a road trip may be a foreign concept. But I am sure we can relate to a por tion of our lives when we have felt like we weren’t in the driv er’s seat. Through decisions or pure happenstance, we ended up being a passenger in life for a period of time. What do we do when we find ourselves in that situation? You can just give in to the turmoil, and inconsisten cies or you can take hold of your courage and grow! There will often be times when life’s pressures can be weighty and we feel like we’ve lost control. For me, it was right after my separation. With no idea who I was anymore, and no clue of the way forward, for a long time, I was completely lost. Questions went unanswered, decisions went unmade – I simply survived. But this part of my journey was necessary. Psalm 110:71 in the New Living Translation says, “My suffering was good for me, for it taught me to pay attention to your decrees.”Theseason of struggle for me was an arduous process of pain ful betrayal, excommunication and innuendo, but I did come away with invaluable, worthy lessons that will keep me for the rest of my life. Here’s the thing. Whether its through a dis solved relationship, a death of a close loved one or some other traumatic experience, there will come times when the only thing we can do is coast – release con trol and watch life unfold. This doesn’t mean that we take the victim’s mentality or lose any esteem in the process. We just have to look at the situation and realise: 1. You may control the speed, but I control the destination. Through my journey, I have had moments of grave uncertainty about my future. Although I’m far from done, I have learned that no situation or voice can quell any destiny that you are willing to work toward. In my case, when you have everything taken away from you, and you are treated as if you never mattered, consider that your steps are ordered by God. Fully trusting Him, gaining wisdom and persistently work ing toward your goals will get you to your expected end.

Road trip revelations – A passenger’s perspective CLARKE

Natasha Mikles: In the past two years of the pandemic, have you seen a change in the types of things that young people are struggling with? Seth Winberg: What I’ve observed personally is a kind of suspended animation of young adults’ social, emotional and spiritual development. I think they’ve really suffered from a lack of in-person interactions in a variety of aspects of their lives, but particularly their social spir itual development. It really does something to be physically distanced from people in such extreme ways.

– Religious leaders often try to support the people they serve during challenging times. This supportive role was especially important during the past few years as the nation dealt with a pandemic, social distancing and the loss of more than a million lives. In a recent discussion spon sored by the Global Religion Journalism Initiative, academics and religious leaders discussed faith-based mental health coun seling, including its benefits and limitations.Natasha Mikles, an assistant professor at Texas State Univer sity, moderated the discussion. Academic panelists included Thema Bryant, a trauma psy chologist, ordained minister in the African Methodist Epis copal Church and professor at Pepperdine University and Rabbi Seth Winberg, senior chaplain at Brandeis Hillel at Brandeis University. Publisher and author David Morris also tookBelowpart.

An interfaith discussion on the role of religion in mental health

Natasha Mikles: Are there times when religion can actu ally be a source of stress rather than comfort for someone who’s going through a difficult time?

Thema Bryant: Yes, reli gion can be used for healing and empowerment, and it also can be used to oppress, marginalise and shame. In psychology, there’s something called positive religious coping and negative religious coping. Positive religious coping is believing that God is loving and ultimately wants to help, and that’s associated with positive mental health outcomes. Funda mentally believing that God is harsh and trying to penalise me is associated with more nega tive religious outcomes, and more negative mental health outcomes. Seth Winberg: Yes, depending on the person and the circum stances, the faith, traditions and the community that one is living in, faith can certainly be a burden, or a strain, or a source of trauma. But for many people, faith provides a commu nity, a social network, a sense of shared values, a rhythm to life and a common culture that I think is very powerful.

are some highlights from the discussion. Answers have been edited for brevity and clarity.

David Morris: Yes, too often people are given simplistic plati tudes about how their loved one is in heaven. But as grief con tinues, they might be shamed a little bit and be told that they should move on. But grieving takes time. There are plenty of examples in religious literature of people in tremendous grief and tremendous sorrow.

Natasha Mikles: What tools can religious professionals use to help people have a more bal anced understanding of how their religious tradition thinks about mental health? Seth Winberg: In a page of the Talmud, there’s an open dialogue that rabbis across gen erations and people of faith across generations are having with each other. And I some times encourage students to feel free to try to talk to me or with anyone in that kind of open way – to take the risk of asking questions that we might think we can’t ask and still be a person of faith. I think, because of our modern, maybe Ameri can, perception of clergy, people don’t expect contemporary faith leaders or rabbis to be open to that kind of discussion. But that’s where Rabbinic Judaism started.Thema Bryant: Yes, I think there’s a wonderful role for min isters and other faith leaders to play in promoting and cre ating space for mental health. And one of the pieces is trans parency. I have seen ministers from pulpits talk about mental health challenges, talk about their grief, or talk about them selves going to therapy. That can really open the door, letting our humanity show.

It’s not so obvious what the right faith-based responses are. One of them is just being pre sent with people and being with them as they try to figure it out –not trying to give them answers and biblical verses, but to just let them express that really uncertain feeling. And having them feel that there’s a slightly older adult in their lives that just nods and lets them express those doubts and those ques tions, I think, can be helpful.

Thema Bryant: I would definitely agree that a major challenge for young adults has been loneliness and discon nection. Another big piece is around injustice. Some sanc tuaries have fought for these issues, but other sanctuaries have not only been silent but have actually promoted really oppressive (ideas). And I like to say it’s healthy to be out raged about outrageous things. And there are some outrageous things that have been done and said, even in the name of faith and religion. Young people have a need not only for com munity and companionship, but (support in) addressing social injustices.
