The 'Greeks' step up to the challenge

By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net HUNDREDS partied, networked and shared in the festivities surrounding the Bahamas Greek Weekend that kicked off last Friday. The highlight of the three-day festival was most definitely the Steppin’ on the Shores event that saw members of Black Greek lettered organisations from around the world show off their moves to the backdrop of the Bahamas’ natural beauty.

The step show had an exciting start and ended on a vibrant note. High school step teams opened the show and “the crowd went wild to see how amazing our high school talent was,” said Jayde Knowles of KO Productions, which presented the event.

This was followed by various fraternities and sororities all showcasing their best steps in hopes of taking the grand prize.

“Teams from all over the United States flew to our shores just to compete for the grand prize. One sorority, Zeta Phi Beta, and one fraternity, Alphi Phi Alpha, walked away as the supreme champs of the new historic Steppin’ on the Shores competition,” she said.

The step show was followed by an afterparty on the Beach Soccer Stadium grounds and “Flip Flops”, a cooler fete to close out

“The talent displayed on the stages this past weekend definitely surpassed expectations, with the visiting teams already anticipating and planning to return next year. Our aim was to catch the attention of the Greek lettered organisations around the world and invite them to showcase their best steppers to our beautiful sandy beaches,” said Jayde.

The event was presented in conjunction with the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). Originally, the Big Greek Weekend was created to mainly highlight the annual step show known as the Barefoot Summer Jam. KO Productions then came up with the vision to make the Bahamas the number one Greek networking hub for Black Greek letter organisations. BTC joined forces with NPHC and KO Productions to officially launch the Bahamas Greek Weekend.

“The objective of bringing this event back this year was to make this an exciting annual prospect, with hopes of the Ministry of Tourism and the government embracing how the ‘Greek’ community can make a drastic difference within our tourism sector with this event. We look forward to bigger and better outcomes in years to come,” said Jayde.

Inspiring future maritime professionals MORE than 40 students, ranging in ages from 12 to 16 years old, were given the chance to learn more about the maritime industry and gain a better understanding of its career opportunities as part of this year’s Summer camp programme at the LJM Maritime Academy in Nassau.

Sponsored by the Disney Cruise Line, the two-week camp exposed students to the various aspects of maritimeoriented jobs and showed them how traditional STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects apply to the various roles available in the field. The programme also sought to build hands-on skills required for seamanship by including lessons in boat handicraft, navigation, outdoor skills and first aid.

Simon Morgan, Disney Cruise Line Marine Fleet training manager, spent a day with the LJM Maritime Academy students, speaking to them about his role at Disney Cruise Line and what it takes to work onboard a

cruise ship. He also led a special class on tying nautical knots – a fundamental seamanship skill.

“I was honoured to be able to share some of my maritime knowledge and experience with the Academy’s summer camp students,” said Mr Morgan.

“I hope the time they spend at the Summer camp opens their eyes and minds to the many opportunities in the maritime industry, and helps inspire the next generation of seafarers.”

Since 2011, the LJM Maritime Academy has worked to provide local professionallevel training to future maritime professionals in the Bahamas. The programme

instructs students in the theory and practicalities of life on a ship. The training adheres to global industry standards and ensures students are competitive in the global workforce.

“We have been working with Disney Cruise Line for many years in a variety of different ways,” said Dr Brendamae Cleare, president of the LJM Maritime Academy.

The sponsorship of the LJM Maritime Academy Summer camp is a part of Disney Cruise Line’s initiatives focused on inspiring youth to pursue maritime careers.

Most recently, Disney Cruise Line announced it will sponsor four scholarships at the LJM Maritime Academy for female cadets aspiring to become ship captains and shipboard leaders. The scholarships, one for each of the ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, will include tuition to the three-year programme – two years of study at the academy and one year of service aboard a Disney ship.

A WIFE AND MOTHER TO A YOUNG SON, SHE TELLS JEFFARAH GIBSON HOW SHE DECIDED TO UPROOT HER LIFE TO EMBARK ON A NEW ADVENTURE IN LONDON WHICH SHE HOPES WILL PROVE THAT BAHAMIANS CAN COMPETE WITH THE BEST.

ANEKA Beneby may just be starting out in her career in international finance, but she is already fulfilling a dream she has had since she was a little girl: to be an ambassador for the Bahamas.

She is doing this in her new post in the United Kingdom where she is now working in the private banking sector.

Armed with her chartered financial analyst certification, community-mindedness and a global outlook on life, Aneka took the opportunity to break out of her comfort zone here at home and relocate abroad to work.

After six years with the Julius Baer Bank (Bahamas) team here in Nassau, Aneka transitioned to a new role at the bank’s London office.

She is currently a director and manager in the portfolio management team.

Her role includes managing global US dollar multi-asset class portfolios, which means stocks, bonds, alternative investments and cash.

While in London, Aneka aspires to prove that Bahamian financial professionals are able to successfully compete with the best in the world.

“I get to fulfil that little girl’s dream of being an ambassador for the Bahamas, only in the world of finance. However, I have no plans to rest on my laurels, recognising my career is still in its infancy. I still have to work hard and be the best portfolio manager I can be, putting my clients’ interests first. I am eager to build on this achievement.

I view it as a springboard to vault my family and career into a world of opportunity that we have yet to unlock. And who knows, maybe Oxford is also in my future after all,” she told Tribune Weekend.

As a little girl, Aneka was always a big dreamer. She recalled telling her mother of aspirations to attend the University of Oxford and becoming a representative of the Bahamas to the United Nations.

“She said, ‘Go for it’. My parents equipped me with all of the tools I needed to be successful and responsible. Most important to them was education. They sacrificed to give me the best education they could.”

Aneka completed high school at Queen’s College in Nassau and her tertiary education at McGill University in Canada, where she studied Economics and French.

She is a CFA charterholder, past president of CFA Society in the Bahamas and a member of the Chartered Institute for Securities Investment in the UK. And she is no stranger to living abroad, having previously resided in Montreal for college and in Geneva, Switzerland, for work.

“My career began 12 years ago when I worked as the assistant to the CEO for a French bank. My intention was to work for one year after graduating from McGill and return to university to do complete a Master’s degree in Trade and Finance. I received an OAS scholarship to pursue this degree.

Instead, I reconsidered, as I found my work to be fascinating. I had never come across stocks, bonds or any financial securities before. Bloomberg was a mystery to me. I had also never been in an environment where Bahamians spoke so many different languages fluently. Not to mention, everyone, every day carried themselves immaculately.

It was the perfect mix of intellectual stimulation, opportunity for growth and fashion. Impressed and taken by this new world, I definitively decided I wanted in. Instead of pursuing a Masters, I chose to work and complete the CFA charter,” she said.

But of all of her accomplishments, being married to Felix Beneby, Jr and becoming a mother to her their son Noah Beneby is her greatest achievement, she said.

The support of her family is what has been keeping her grounded throughout the process of relocating and working in London.

“I had so many questions, especially those which centered around my family. What did this all mean for my six-month-old son and how would he adjust to this new life? My husband and his professional goals would also be affected by my aspirations. We already had a home, a wonderful nanny, extensive family support, good jobs which allowed us to travel and eat out regularly...really, a beautiful life. All of this was about to change and the uncertainty of it all was difficult to navigate. Then there was the intimidation of starting over in a team of highly skilled professionals in London, the financial epicentre of the world. How would I fit into an already established team whose reputation preceded them? How could I contribute? Essentially, was I good enough?”

The looming questions did, however, not dissuade Aneka from a dream she was ready to embrace and conquer. Reminding herself of the skills she had cultivated over the years and the full support shown by her family, she took the next major step in her life with full confidence.

“I am still transitioning and of course there are stressful moments. For example, when I first arrived I had to pass an exam to attain the Investment Management Certificate, in order to be licenced by the Financial Conduct Authority. This was necessary for me to be able to give investment advice and trade in the United Kingdom. Luckily, I was able to pass on the first attempt. Then there was the issue of finding somewhere suitable to live

Today, Aneka has settled in nicely in her new home and is grateful to her husband for helping make the transition an easier one.

“Throughout all of the stressful moments he has provided sound advice and has kept me grounded.

My mother graciously agreed to live with me in London temporarily as I transitioned. During her time there, she dropped Noah off and picked him up from his childminder, prepared home-cooked meals, washed, cleaned and bought groceries, so that I could focus on work and my exam. My sister

and father provided reinforcement when they visited for two weeks and we shared much needed family time. My colleagues from Julius Baer Bahamas continue to lend their support and encouragement, and my colleagues at Julius Baer London have welcomed me warmly, helping me with everything from registering for healthcare to getting my hair and nails done. I feel as though I have been a part of the team for much longer than two months. This transition could not have been such a success without of all of the assistance I have received.”

Da Shave Ice Shack owner Shanique Lightbourne said she only started her business last month after she tasted shaved ice for the very first time. It was like nothing she had tasted before and she immediately decided that she had to share it with the masses.

“The fruity flavour syrup just absorbed the snow-like textured ice. I felt like a kid and it reminded me of my childhood when we use to shave the ice from the inside of the freezer. Right there and then I started my research and Da Shave Ice Shack was born.

With the help of God, and the support of a good friend that believed in my dream, I was able to get started. Now that I’ve gotten started I’m excited and can’t wait for the next pop-up event or festival. What also really got me started was that I wanted something fun to do on the weekends to compliment my 9 to 5 job during the week as a sales representative,” she told Tribune Weekend.

Shanique said her goal was to also get out from behind

the desk and away from the telephone, and enjoy life and weekend events. For her, being a pop-up entrepreneur fulfils all those criteria.

“With the help of my teenage daughters and family we make sure our customers are greeted with warm smiles and that they leave with a smile at Da Shave Ice Shack.

What I like most is the freedom and flexibility it brings.

As a pop-up business I get to choose the event and each experience is so different, unique and fun. It also gives me an opportunity to teach my girls how to operate a business,” she said.

She describes shaved ice as a delightful frozen treat not only for kids, but adults as well. Her goal is to become a frozen treat one-stop shop one say, offering slushies, Italian gelato and ice cream.

At Da Shave Ice Shack, Shanique currently offers over 24 popular flavours as well as six specialised ones. There are boozy flavours (infused with alcohol), natural flavours and sugar-free options, along with fresh fruit and cream toppings.

“It’s cool and freshening, especially during the Summer months. A memorable client experience for me was a cute little girl who ordered her favourite bubble gum flavour.

She and her brother were excited to place their orders and the moment she tasted her shaved ice, she gave me a thumbs up,” said Shanique.

A slice of Mexico

By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Reporter acadet@tribunemedia.net BAHAMIANS have embraced many cuisines over the years: Italian, Chinese, Greek, Japanese, Indian, and more. But there is one country whose dining scene has not yet been fully explored: Mexico.

Cue the launch of the new Mexicaba restaurant in the western part of New Providence. The new eatery offers a fast and casual approach to dining; tying together a heavily Mexican-influenced menu with complementary Bahamian touches.

In an interview with Tribune Weekend, owners of the Cable Beach restaurant said the goal was to introduce a “soft, easy environment with fresh, quality options”. And it seems they have hit upon something with this plan, as lines have been out the door since Mexicaba’s recent opening.

Mexicaba offers everything from tacos, burritos and burrito bowls, to salads, soups and vegan dishes – all of which customers can put together in their desired combination with the help of a ‘Caba’ specialist. Options such as chicken, beef, pulled pork, steak, shrimp, conch, salmon, lobster, and any choice of fresh vegetables and sauces, can be added on.

“The demand for Mexicaba in the country was definitely there,” said the management team behind the restaurant. “Mexican food is always a good idea. There are a ton of Italian and Bahamian restaurants, but no real (presence) of a Mexican style restaurant. In travelling and understanding what Bahamians would have a feel for on a universal level, it only made sense to bring this back home. And pairing our menu options with some of the local faves we grew up on was a no-brainer.”

Team members visited Mexico and the US for inspiration, but do not like to compare their venture to any other restaurant as they are trying to create something unique.

“Going forward we are going to be offering meals of the day, so you will start to see options like minced crawfish, a crab flavoured rice to go along with the bowls, and more,” said management.

In addition to the menu, the restaurant’s décor and atmosphere were important to the owners, who wanted the space to be an inviting, chill and fun one where patrons don’t mind whiling away an hour or two.

“Initially we started with a ton of white walls and we wanted to feature some artwork. We reached out to our local artist, Angelika Wallace-Whitfield, and she blessed us with the mural you see here. We gave her the freedom to do what she wanted and

to do all of this at affordable prices,” said a team member.

“It is great feeling for all involved, seeing the actual fruition of Mexicaba come to life.

Although there are challenges such as long lines, it is a good problem... having too many people visit. We would rather have that issue than to have no one coming in the door at all. I think right now we are seeing an average of 300 to 350 persons per day, which is kind of crazy for a twoweek-old restaurant.”

Thankful for such a warm welcome by the community, the team are now focused meeting and exceeding everyone’s expectations.

“As cliché as it sounds, we are excited to see what’s in store. The relationship with the staff is pretty good, it is like a family and it has been working out pretty good. The goal is to start here, but to take over the world. As we expand, we have to be very calculated in where we go next. So for now we will get the most out of this location and when we do expand, it will be a well-thought decision.

Mexicaba, located in the West Bay Shopping Centre, will have its grand opening on Saturday, August 24.

The secret to using fertilizer WE do not buy just one type of fertilizer to feed our plants. We need several, suitable to our growing needs. Every type of fertilizer in known by the ratio of its main ingredients: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and K (potassium). In some countries S for sulphur is the fourth letter in NPKS. All ingredients in fertilizer are essential just as food for human beings must include protein, carbohydrate, fats, minerals and vitamins.

Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulphur are macronutrients, the ones your soil needs in the greatest amounts to provide healthy plants. Add calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) and you have the full range of macronutrients.

Other elements are equally essential but are required in much smaller amounts, rather like vitamins for human consumption. These micronutrients are iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), molybdenum (Mo), boron (B), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), chlorine (Cl), and nickel (Ni).

The list does not stop here. There are other elements that are known to benefit certain plants but it is not known whether they benefit all plants.

Included here are silicon (Si), sodium (Na), cobalt (Co), selenium (Se), chromium (Cr), vanadium (V), and titanium (Ti).

Just as a chain is no stronger than its weakest link, the absence of one mineral in your soil will affect the growth, flowering, and fruit production of your garden plants. How can you ensure you have the full range of minerals in your soil?

One way is to buy only premium fertilizers, those with top sales. There is a reason why they are best sellers. Another is to buy volcanic rock dust that includes all the minerals I have mentioned plus a few others plants do not need but are harmless. A third method is to use compost made from (of course) plant material that contains all the

Plants only take from the soil the elements they need. As plants reach different stages they require different amounts of certain elements. A young mango tree for instance will not need the same amount of elements as a mature tree that is bearing heavily. Extra phosphorus is added to fruiting plants like peppers and tomatoes as they approach the flowering stage to increase the number of flowers and the size of the fruit.

When most people think of fertilizer they envision those plastic bags with an equal amount of NPK such as 6-6-6 or 10-10-10. This granular fertilizer contains other elements and to find these you have to look at the tag on the bag. The elements come mostly from mineral salts. A 6-6-6 fertilizer has 18% NPK. Add the other macronutrients and some minor ones and we have around 20%. That means 80% of the weight of the fertilizer is not contributing to your growing power.

Granular fertilizer becomes active when it comes in contact with water and as plant roots take in water they also take in nutrients. Granular fertilizer should be mixed into the top surface of the soil in a ring around plants. An application usually lasts about one month, shorter in the rainy season.

If you use a high NPK ratio such as 12-12-12 you must be very careful not to add too much fertilizer.

The raw mineral salts can burn the small adventitious roots and cause your plants to die.

Liquid fertilizer is more expensive but can be sprayed onto the foliage of plants as well the soil.

Brands such as Miracle-Gro have a wide range of NPK ratios for different plants, from tomatoes to orchids. Very fast-growing plants like tomatoes could be sprayed once a week while slower veggies would benefit more from once a fortnight.

Time-release fertilizer seems more expensive again until you consider its effectiveness. The original and still the standard is Osmocote. I would suggest you use Osmocote for all your potted plants. Remarkably little is needed and once it has been worked into the top surface of the soil it will feed for three or four months. Osmocote and other time-release fertilizers do not have the 80% filler of some granulated fertilizers. The small round capsules are composed of almost 100% nutrients.

Spikes are also time release because of their compressed density and are great for orchard trees and shrubs. Just hammer in the recommended number of spikes and forget about them for a season.

Then there is the compost pile. The creation of a substantial amount of compost is hard work but is very rewarding. A mixture is made of woody carbon and green nitrogen from a wide variety of vegetable discards such as peelings, outer leaves, coffee grounds and overripe fruits. It is a fact that if you bury these in a hole in your garden and leave them for a month or two you will provide plenty of free nutrition for any plants you grow nearby. The best restaurants have their own herb and vegetable gardens and, of course, have a daily supply of compost material.

THE celebration of carnival arrived in Trinidad and Tobago with the French in the late 18th century. Slaves could not take part in carnival, so formed their own parallel celebration called canboulay. However, African percussion instruments were banned in 1880, in response to the Canboulay Riots – riots by the descendants of freed slaves against the British police who were trying to crack down on certain aspects of the celebration of carnival.

These percussion instruments were replaced by bamboo sticks beaten together, which were in time also banned. By the 1930s, music bands began using metal containers – frying pans, dustbin lids and oil drums – as substitutes for the bamboo instruments, accidentally discovering a new sound.

The first instruments developed in the evolution of steelpan music were Tamboo-Bamboos, tunable sticks made of bamboo wood. These were hit onto the ground and with other sticks in order to produce sound. Tamboo-Bamboo bands included percussion of a (gin) bottle and spoon. By the mid-1930s, bits of metal percussion were being used in the Tamboo-Bamboo bands, the first probably being either the automobile brake hub “iron” or the biscuit drum “boom”.

In 1941, the United States Navy arrived on Trinidad. The pannists helped to popularise steelpan music among the soldiers, which then began its international popularisation. The 55-gallon oil drum was used to make steelpans from around 1947. The Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra (TASPO) formed to attend the Festival of Britain in 1951. It was the first steelpan band whose instruments were all made from oil drums. The steelpan is widely regarded as the only major musical instrument to be invented in the 20th century.

Nevandria debuts with heartfelt tribute to her late aunt “KEEP shining your light even though it hurts” is the message of Nevandria Lyriic’s debut single, the very personal song “Your Light”. She urges listeners to keep pursuing their dreams no matter the setbacks.

Kyle Stuart of the Cyclone Music Group & Jvibe – Grammy-nominated producer for Estelle, Keisha Cole, Morgan Heritage – provides the perfect reggae sound for Nevandria as she croons her way through each stanza with a distinct 90s slant. The singer also puts her own soulful spin on the tune as she belts out heartfelt lyrics paying homage to her aunt, Rebecca Davis, who lost to her battle with cancer.

What is most important about the release of “Your Light” is that it allowed Nevandria to use quotes from her aunt in the song “to ensure her spirit and words live on”. You can even hear a voice note of her aunt saying, “You have to have peace within yourself on the journey because God heals.”

These words were uttered before what became her aunt’s last surgery.

“My intention for this song is to heal, inspire, encourage and remind anyone dealing with tough times that they bring something special to the world and the people around them,” said Nevandria, “everyone has a light and a purpose for that light”.

Nevandria is a neo soul/reggae

artist and songwriter, “the little girl with a big voice” from Moore’s Island, Abaco. She is a current member of Jukebox Live, under the leadership of Ivan prosper, who is the former drummer of Destiny’s Child. She is a former Miss Abaco 2012 and made her debut on the stage at Famfest

EVEN though Tito Jackson experienced fame with the Jackson 5, he heard the comments from Charles Barkley years ago, about him having an insignificant role in the group’s historic success.

Now, for anyone who believes that, Jackson is looking to change that narrative about his musical abilities through his new solo project. He recently released a new version of his 2017 song “One Way Street,” and is working on his sophomore album, which he says is expected to be released next year.

In 2010, NBA superstar-turned sports analyst Barkley dissed Jackson’s talents as a supporting cast member. Jackson, 65, said he still feels motivated to prove Barkley and other doubters wrong.

“I took that sort of personal,” he told The Associated Press in a recent interview, adding he’s never heard anyone say that.

“He’s trying to say that I don’t contribute. So then I say, ‘Maybe it’s time they hear from me.’ I love Mr Barkley. I am not upset about it. But it just hurts in a way where I tried to do the right thing in life, you know, raise my sons as good young black men who do the right thing by people. But now, that time has come and I’m going to do my thing.”

The Jackson 5 included brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael. The family group — which was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 — produced several No 1 hits in the 1970s including “ABC,” ‘‘I Want You Back,” and “I’ll Be There.”

But with the Jackson 5’s burgeoning success, Tito was the least-heard member of the group

as a background singer who played the guitar. His brothers launched solo careers, including Michael Jackson who reached superstar status.

Tito Jackson and his brothers are currently touring in Europe.

“We’re each other’s best friends,” he said. “And that’s what I love about working with my brothers because we’re friends.”

Out of the nine Jackson siblings, Tito was the only one to never release a solo project — until his 2016 debut “Tito Time.”

Jackson said he purposely held back from pursuing a solo career, because he wanted to focus more on raising his three sons — TJ, Taj and Taryll, who have their own music group, 3T. Now, it’s his time.

“I’m doing things right now that some would have done 20 or 30 years ago.” Jackson said. “I’m glad I did it the way I did.”

A time for teachers to exercise their creative muscles

By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net TEACHERS who are looking for a unique way to decorate their classrooms and other spaces ahead of the new school year can try their hand at learning a new skill at the next Make + Take Crafting Studio workshop.

The event is being hosted by The Nassau Script Company, founded by artist Leanne Victoria. She has been presenting the workshop all Summer long and targeting different demographics.

At each session, participants learn how to make customised wooden signs with messages that inspire, encourage or educate.

Now this Sunday’s event, to be held from 6pm to 8pm at 1er Cru, is designed especially with teachers in mind.

Leanne said she wanted to bring teachers together right before the start of the new school year to enjoy creating a keepsake while also learning new skills which they can then introduce to their students if they wish.

“So the Summer series was really a collaboration between Kyle Stubbs and I...

encouraging (participants) to try something new through crafting,” Leanne told Tribune Weekend.

“Our entire series has targeted markets. We targeted brides and wedding planners, entrepreneurs. Our last instalment will encourage teachers to come and enjoy a craft specifically designed for them. The workshop is all about you. Make a sign like this one or whatever you like. Play games, win prizes and enjoy the company of other teachers before the new school year starts.”

The sign-making workshops have been combining woodworking techniques with trendy lettering stencils to create wooden signs for homes, offices and special occasions.

“There is something therapeutic about staining and stencilling your own project. In addition to the good vibes of creating a beautiful piece, you get to take home something that you handcrafted,” said Leanne.

The artist said these sessions are held as monthly public events and are also available for private parties for a more intimate experience. A selection of wine is served at the public events but hosts can opt for an alcohol-free private party.

“Our public events are held once a month, however, you can plan a private party with us at any time.

We are perfect for birthday parties, bachelorette/bachelor parties, small group socials or just a night out with friends,” said Leanne.

“In addition to the fact that it is so fun, you do not have to create the same project as other partygoers. You can all create something absolutely different. It’s a great teambuilding exercise and a great way to bond with your friends. I can’t downplay how awesome it feels to create something that you can truly be proud of.”

Leanne said new projects which are more involved will be added to the slate of activities.

Alesha says: “OK, Taylor come all the way through with this get-up! I love the jumpsuit and the blazer combo.

I can do without the shoes, but I’m going to just ignore them and give her the props for the outfit. I could have also seed a high bun or long ponytail with this look.”

Karin says: “I get that they wanted to match as sisters, but I’m not sure about these outfits, which are by the same designer, Jonathan Simkhai. Chloe is rocking the full jumpsuit, while Halle chose the bodysuit with trousers combo.

I think Halle looks better. Chloe’s full body suit looks old-fashioned somehow.”

Alesha says: “Chloe’s outfit is giving me disco-themed party vibes. It’s weird, and not particularly stylish.

Halle’s pants add some style, a visually interesting aspect to her outfit. But all in all, I wish they’d gone for something more colourful, considering the beach setting of the event.”

Karin says: “She sure is rocking the Barbie pink dress jacket. I love the cut of it; the sharp shoulders and three-quarter length sleeves. I’m not 100 percent sold on the bright yellow pumps, but what really throws me off are the nude net stockings; they are just too much.”

Alesha says: “I love the yellow and hot pink together. Reminds me of a Barbie doll. Jennie played it safe, but chic-cute at the same time. Ideal for a Teen Choice Awards.”

Karin says: “Zendaya can pull off almost anything because of how tall and slim she is. Anyone else, and this wouldn’t work. But she almost pulls it off, even if it is a run-of-the-mill yellow plaid shirt and weird shorts where the pockets are longer than the shorts themselves.”

Alesha says: ““I love Zendaya, like a lot. But this is not it. I am a mix and matcher myself, but this isn’t coming together. Maybe if the shoes were sandals; ya know, those one-strap ones. Even strappy heels would have completed this look, but the white pumps have got to take a back seat.”

Review: Angry Birds can't fly, but this sequel stays aloft THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE 2 | 96 minutes

IT’S hard to have huge expectations for a movie called “The Angry Birds Movie 2.” After all, it’s not even a movie based on a smartphone game. It’s a sequel to a movie based on a smartphone game.

But now that we’ve established that nobody’s expecting Ingmar Bergman here, let’s offer up some praise for this sequel-to-a-movie-based-ona-smartphone-game, for finding a way to actually improve on the 2016 original in a way that’s clever but not snarky, sweet but not syrupy.

Because regardless of its perhaps pedestrian origins (these non-flying birds are pedestrians, actually) the movie, directed by Thurop Van Orman, reminds us that finding a formula to appeal to both kids and parents for 90-odd minutes isn’t rocket science. All you need is some appealing characters, some famous voices, a message with heart, and, crucially, some good jokes.

Oh, and potty references. Unfortunately, kids still really like those.

If you haven’t seen the last film, and haven’t even played the game (in which case, kudos for all the time you’ve saved), let’s recap. Our action takes place on two islands — Bird Island, home to the titular angry birds, and Piggy Island, home to

the green pigs, who in the last movie stole — and came frighteningly close to eating — Bird Island’s precious eggs. In other words, its future offspring.

But let’s not dwell on that.

Because we have more immediate concerns.

As we begin the sequel, Red (Jason Sudeikis), he of the touchy temper and large eyebrows who became an unlikely hero in the last film, is basking in newfound popularity. He spends his days with sidekick Chuck (Josh Gad), inventing elaborate pranks to play on the pigs, who are led by Leonard (Bill Hader.)

The birds slingshot a whole bunch of hot sauce over to Piggy Island. The pigs send over some crabs. This could go on forever, except one day, the pigs ask for a truce.

Red and Chuck are sceptical, but it turns out there’s something threatening all of them, and they need to join forces. Gigantic ice balls are falling from the sky, targeting birds and pigs alike.

“Oh, cwap!” exclaims one of the adorable baby hatchlings.

Who’s sending these ice bombs? It’s Zeta, over on Eagle Island, a new and formidable villain (voiced by a hilarious Leslie Jones, a welcome newcomer to the franchise.) Like in a James Bond film, her plans involve ultimate global

destruction — at least in the vicinity of Pigcific Ocean.

So the former enemies become “frenemies.”

But they need a crack team to thwart Zeta. They especially need an ace engineer, which they find in Chuck’s whipsmart little sister, Silver (Rachel Bloom), a star student at Avian Academy.

But can Red, whose ego remains highly sensitive, become a team player? Even more difficult, can he cede authority to ... a girl?

And what’s with Zeta, who’s plotting to seize the other islands to create her own paradise? Might her anger have anything to do with her history with, say, Mighty Eagle (Peter Dinklage), the only bird who physically can fly, but remains deeply challenged in the bravery department?

Meanwhile, there’s the sweetest little subplot, involving the adorable hatchlings, who get into serious trouble while playing around with their younger siblings — who are still eggs.

So there’s the story in an eggshell. What propels it forward are the often genuinely entertaining jokes. These take the form of both wordplay and visual gags. OK, it’s not Bergman. But it’s ... Birdman? In any case, add a few kid-friendly potty jokes into this mix, and the whole family should stay happily aloft.

literary lives - Anaïs Nin

The Blue Nude Sir Christopher Ondaatje writes about the diarist Anaïs Nin and the discovery of a portrait of her by an unknown Eastern artist who painted with Picasso and Matisse in Paris in the 1920s “We are like sculptors, constantly carving out of other the image we long for, need, love or desire, often against reality, against their benefit, and always, in the end, a disappointment, because it does not fit them.”

MONG the strongest passions of my life is collecting. Like all serious collectors, I have certain obsessions. One of them is knives of all kinds, cultures and periods; another is the art of Ceylon and Sri Lanka created during the 20th century. Of all the remarkable modern paintings from the island I have collected since I was in my 20s, the one I love the most is “The Blue Nude”, painted in Paris by Justin Daraniyagala. It hangs in the bedroom of my London lat, opposite my bed. I find it difficult to imagine living without it.

It is seldom that a major Sri Lankan artist interconnects with authors and artists of a different world and culture – but that is what happened in an extraordinary encounter in Paris

in the late 1920s. Justin Daraniyagala was born in Ceylon in 1903 and received his early art education at the Mudaliyar Amerasekera’s Art School in Colombo. After studies at Trinity College, Cambridge, from 1922 to 1927, where he obtained a law degree and also a “blue” for boxing in the bantam-weight class, he was encouraged by the artist Augustus John to study painting at the Slade School of Art in London, which he did in 192627. It was at the Slade that he won his first prize for drawing. In 1928, he joined the Académie Julian in Paris and there, during the years 1928 and 1929, he met and worked with Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, both of whom influenced his work.

It was in Paris, too, during those years, that he met the writer Anaïs Nin, who had started keeping her famous diary in 1914, when she was only 11 years old. Eventually, the diary comprised 35,000 hand-written pages, constantly revised to conform to her ever-changing view of those whom she allowed into her life.

Daraniyagala must have cut an incongruous figure in the bohemian Paris of the 1920s – totally unlike the boisterous Picasso and the quiet Matisse. He and his model were the same age – barely twentysix years old. He wealthy, she poor; he single, she already married to her banker-protector.

Whatever their relationship may have been, perhaps merely the fleeting encounter of an artist and model, Daraniyagala’s “Blue Nude” is the only known portrait of the young Anaïs Nin. He himself loved the painting and took it with him when he returned to Ceylon in 1929 to his imposing family house in Nugedola, Pasyala, where it hung in the main drawing room together with sketches by Augustus John, Matisse and Modigliani, surrounded by a rare collection of South Indian bronzes and Chinese jade vases. He refused to

sell the painting, and it was still with him when he died in 1967. After that, I bought it from his family and brought it back to Europe, where I have hardly ever allowed it out of my sight.

The real Blackbeard MERE mention of the name Blackbeard is sure to inspire thoughts of piracy and evil. He is looked upon as the fiercest and most cruel pirate ever.

But who was the man?

Blackbeard was an Englishman and his real name appears to have been Edward Teach, although the spelling of his surname is not consistent, and it may have been an assumed name anyway.

Even though he was not the most successful sea-robber, legendary Blackbeard is probably not only the most famous pirate of the Caribbean, but also the most famous pirate captain of all time. As a notorious figure and a villain, he has been the main subject of many stories, books and movies, yet his career, as a self-employed pirate, lasted for only a few months.

It is believed that he was born in Bristol around 1680 and, during his teen years, left England for Jamaica, where he served as a privateer during the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714). After that war, he moved to New Providence and worked as an ordinary crewman, on the sloop commanded

Queen Anne’s Revenge remained Blackbeard’s primary ship until June 1718, when it and the sloop Adventure were wrecked, on a sandbar near today’s Beaufort Inlet, North Carolina.

In his deposition, David Herriot, former captain of the sloop Adventure, claimed that Blackbeard intentionally grounded both Queen Anne’s Revenge and Adventure in order to break up the pirate company, which by this time had grown to over 300 pirates.

Christmas crafting in Summer

By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net AS the saying goes, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” It is a motto the more organised among us take very seriously. So seriously, that they start their Christmas shopping in Summer.

To help them get a head start on ticking names off on their gift list, veteran crafter Sonia Bowe Adderley is hosting a special event series called “A Taste of Christmas” that kicks off today.

An avid crafter for more than 44 years, Sonia has always wanted to share her passion with others.

Twenty years ago, she opened Soon Ya Tings and operated out of the Craft Centre on Paradise Island.

After 19 years, she yearned for a new home, one that would give customers a unique shopping experience. She found that space at #5 Delancy Street and officially opened the doors of the new and improved Soon Ya Tings last September.

Now she is welcoming the general public to join her in her craft store for a series of events that celebrate the Yuletide season.

“The inspiration behind ‘A Taste of Christmas’ is to give Bahamians a head start on their Christmas shopping. It’s never too early to start putting together your naughty and nice list together. If you are travelling for the holidays, consider our uniquely Bahamian-made products to take with you and surprise a loved one that’s living abroad.

Or if you are in the corporate world looking for gifts for clients, we want you to consider stocking up on those goods,” she said.

The festivities start today with the “Wine Down Friday” mixology event from 6pm to 9pm.

It will feature a new Irish Crème from the Flying Dutchman.

“It’s bound to warm you up on a cold winter’s night. Also, as you sip, you have a chance to turn that bottle into holiday home décor when you take our 90-minute craft class,” she said.

The crafting continues on Saturday with two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, on bow-making and gift-wrapping.

“A Taste of Christmas” concludes on Sunday with a fashion show featuring unique designs made from stamps.

“Maude Lockhart is the featured designer for Sunday’s fashion show. She uses stamps to create her leisurewear line. The models will be accessorised in Tabitha Jacynth Designs jewellery, handmade hats, bags and shoes; all items that are available in store,” she said.

The event, said Sonia, will go to great lengths to put Bahamian culture.

“People should attend this once-in-a-lifetime weekend, as each event showcases Bahamian culture,” she said.

Sonia takes pride in being able to offer both tourists and locals a plethora of authentically Bahamian craft and food items. The store features items such as pepper sauces, seasonings, woven baskets, wall hangings, hot mats, and chargers out of Red Bays and Central Andros, Androsia fabrics, household items such as tablecloths, place mats, potholders, aprons, coasters, water bottles, mugs, cups and saucers, platters, hand-painted trays, bowls, picture frames, soaps, sponges, and ornaments.

Soon Ya Tings also has a collection of clothing/accessories for the whole family, including espadrilles, a wide variety of bags for women and children, hats, necklaces, earrings, cuff links, bow ties, wallets, bracelets and more.

Beware of thunder

THUNDERSTORMS: for many of us pet parents, particularly dog parents, the first distant rumble sets us into a state of panic apprehension and concern for our Fido or Fluffy at home. If we are out, we do everything we can to get home before the worst of the thunder starts up.

If you have no idea what I am referring to then you are either enormously fortunate or you do not own dogs.

Over the years we have had packs of dogs share our home and our lives with us, and their reaction to thunder has been varied. We have gone from total disinterest to utter hysteria – breaking down doors, destroying furniture and uncontrollable barking and shaking. Why is it that one dog couldn’t care less and the next one treats the first

clap of thunder as the arrival of Armageddon?

We really do not know that much about thunder paranoia, but we do know that it is very real and should never be treated as bad behaviour, nor should the dog be punished, because it is an uncontrollable panic attack; there is nothing premeditated about it.

Many dogs go and hide where they feel safest, strangely enough, that is invariably in the bathroom, behind the toilet or in the bathtub or basin. It is interesting to note that these areas are frequently grounded against electric shock.

So this brings us to the possibility that the cause for this severe thunder anxiety in dogs could be due to static build-up. Especially in dogs with long fur it would be relative simple for them to build up static electricity the way we do when we push the elevator button and get a shock, or for me when my hair flies

NDERS is the last of his litter, his siblings having been airlifted to Canada last year.

At the time, Anders wasn’t feeling so great and could not travel, but now he’s back to his boisterous self.

He’s a little quiet around people but will warm up to you quickly and would make a great guard dog, woofing to let you know when someone new is around. Anders is about nine months old and quickly outgrowing his puppyhood, but he’s smart and eager to learn. Do you have room for Anders in your

If the dog is experiencing static electricity and then touches something with his wet nose, that could cause him to totally “lose it”. It is equally possible that they simply smell a difference in the environment with a storm coming and they find that unsettling.

Also, keep in mind that all animals are super sensitive to drops in barometric pressure. Just watch the way animals behave when a hurricane is approaching; they know hours before because of the barometric pressure falling.

Other dogs are terrified of loud noises. Just catch how they react to fireworks to understand that. Oh, of course those mega claps of thunder are sometimes loud enough to put us all under the bed! It is also quite possible that your dog is afraid of thunder because he simply does not know what it is. The unknown is often scary. I tell my dogs it is the big dog in the sky, but they do not appear interested.

Tell-tale signs of anxiety are frequently, but not limited to, the following body language signs: ears back, tails down, eyes wide, panting, lip-licking and yawning. Many people do not realise that excessive yawning has nothing to do with being tired. If your dog keeps yawning excessively then you need to find out what is stressing him out.

We have now discussed what happens with a super thunder phobic dog, but what can be done about it? The thunder shirt has proven to be very successful for some 80 percent of dogs suffering from thunder

I personally am a great believer of getting them into one room, closing the door, putting on fans or the air conditioning, turning on the TV and staying as calm as you are able to, to send reassuring vibes. If you get flustered you will only make it worse. Keep in mind, they are not behaving irrationally on purpose, they are petrified and need our understanding, reassurance and protection.

If you have to go out and you suspect there may be a storm while you are away, I recommend identifying a room where your dog will be safe and cannot do itself any harm. Put on some music, combined with a white noise machine (this is the name of calming noise machines, readily available on line), close the windows and the shutters, and hope for the best.

If all else fails you may have to speak to your veterinarian about the possibility of putting Fido on a tranquilliser when weather is approaching, What is strange is that storm phobia can suddenly develop overnight and disappear just a quickly.

The very best approach is to stay calm yourself, offer a safe place to weather out the storm, talk in a quiet voice, offer distractions like music, TV, toys, and never get angry or yell at your pet. He is not enjoying this experience any more than you are.

Miss World Bahamas promotes plastic recycling WHEN Nyah Bandelier was crowned Miss World Bahamas 2019 in May she made a commitment to promote her platform: the eradication of plastic pollution throughout the Bahamas. So it was only fitting that her first stop would be the Family Island for which she carried the banner in the national competition – Eleuthera.

She was welcomed to the island by the One Eleuthera Foundation, a group involved in a number of environmental and conservation programmes.

National flag carrier and sponsor of the Miss World Bahamas pageant Bahamasair flew the 19-year-old beauty and her entourage into Rock Sound, where she was whisked off to the Retreat at the Centre for Training and Innovation (CTI), formally the Rock Sound Club which once housed the rich and famous of the 1950 and 60s. A project is underway to restore the property in an environmentally safe and energy efficient way. Nyah toured the property’s farm, solar panel complex, extensive property restoration and student training activities.

“Seeing the great work at the Centre for Training and Innovation gave me hope that we are capable of building great hotel properties in harmony with nature,” she said. “I

was so impressed by the work done by the students there, and inspired by the possibilities of the future.”

The sounds of Junkanoo provided by the children of the South Eleuthera Police Youth Camp greeted the beauty queen as she arrived at her next stop, the One Eleuthera Foundation complex.

There, she was presented with a number of gifts, including handmade jewellery, a monogrammed straw basket, an official One Eleuthera Foundation pin, and a framed photograph embellished with local seashells created by the students of the summer camp.

“The gifts were especially thoughtful and creative,” said Nyah. “I was so moved by the portrait. The kids clearly put a lot of time and effort into it. It’s the kind of thing you never forget.”

A demonstration of a glass crushing machine on the site gave her an actual feel for how the recycling project works. She committed to providing assistance in any efforts to raise funds for a machine to convert plastic waste into useful material as part of her ongoing “Beauty with a Purpose” project.

Next up was a visit to the Island School where she got to view the many projects underway to recycle and reuse waste, a pig farm and

hydroponics farm. A trek to the controversial Lighthouse Point provided breathtaking views of the pristine beach, cliff views and old lighthouse.

The property was recently granted to Disney for a major development.

“The views at both Lighthouse Point and the Glass Window Bridge took my breath away,” she said.

Later that evening, Miss World Bahamas along with One Eleuthera Foundation CEO Shawn Ingraham officially opened The Tea Room at the Retreat. The restaurant, to be

run wholly by student employees, will serve a variety of native cuisine.

The next day, it was off on a tour of the Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve for a hike through the park kept by the Bahamas National Trust.

“This is the island of my heritage, and it was truly a great experience visiting Eleuthera as Miss World Bahamas. I’ve always known the island to have great natural beauty and warm friendly people, but carrying the title made it that much more special,” she said.
