eauty is all around us in the Bahamas, on land and in the sea. But many of us are too busy with everyday life to pause and really see and enjoy the astonishing sights that surround us. Veteran photographer ROLAND ROSE captures both the ordinary and extraordinary and puts it in frame for us so we can see our environment in a new light.

The Flamingo is the national bird of the Bahamas. Magnificent to behold in flight or as they strut around Ardastra Gardens. Both the female and male birds sit on the eggs to keep them warm and feed the young when they hatch. The many tourists who visit our shores enjoy their marching especially.

“I’ve found myself watching ‘Beat Bobby Flay’ and ‘Guy’s Gorcery Games’ for hours. I need those shows every day!”

Q: What activities will you be doing to stay busy while indoors?

“I’ve been planning a Zoom talk show called ‘Girls Night In 242’, launching tonight. Also just practising makeup techniques on myself helps keep me busy.”

Q: If you could be quarantined with a celebrity, who would it be and why?

“I want to say Oprah Winfrey, just to learn from her, but I don’t wanna be bored...so Rihanna it is! I just know it would be a well-rounded lockdown.”

Q: What is on your holiday weekend menu?

“I try to step it up a bit on the weekends. So this Saturday I’ll cook boiled fish with Johnny cake. On Sunday I’ve planned to cook conch and rice with ham, baked pork chops, baked mac n’ cheese, and Bimini’s corn pudding. I’ll probably do a ‘lil side salad (because I’m watching my weight).”

Q: If you could travel to one place for a coronavirus-free weekend getaway, where would it be and why?

“I would definitely go to Bora Bora. It’s my dream trip! Great sights and food, with me being endlessly fashionable.”

Hong Kong-inspired waffles a hit with Bahamians

By ALESHA CADET • Tribune Features Reporter • acadet@tribunemedia.net DURING her final semester in college, Christin Reckley attended a festival in Toronto which thrilled her with its wide variety of food vendors.

One particular booth caught her eye; the one selling a special type of street food from Hong Kong called bubble waffles.

“This booth was selling just the waffle with your choice of sauces and toppings. I knew right there and then I wanted to do that and so much more. So I spent some time researching and realised it was a trending street food in so many other

countries except the Bahamas,” said Christin.

She was inspired to start her own business, Waffle Zone, which had its official debut at Nassau’s International Cultural Festival last October.

Christin’s initial products were bubble waffles and ice cream. She then expanded the menu options to include chicken wings with waffles, shrimp with waffles, and gourmet style nachos.

“Our customers’ favourite are the S’mores. This is a flavour they can get with the ice cream and waffles, as well as the wings, shrimp and waffles. It’s a topping, but it’s definitely one that 70 percent of our customers

love,” said the 27-year-old.

During lockdown, Christin and her team spent the time between March and May to revamp their menu and figure out new ways to safely cater to their customers’ needs.

As soon as the all-clear was given for curb-side service, they jumped in immediately.

“The new normal definitely is new, however, we have definitely adjusted to it by way of increased sanitation measures for both customers and ourselves, and definitely wearing masks for safety precautions,” said Christin.

She said one of her main goals for Waffle Zone is to one day expand into the Family Islands.

As a small charity, she said her organisation is grateful that they’ve been able to assist people in need as much as they have.

“It is thanks to a group of committed and faithful volunteers, particularly a group of ladies in Treasure Cove,” said Lavita.

“They have consistently ensured that we have care packages that we can give out.”

She added that giving can be done quietly and without fanfare. She encourages people to give as little or as much as they can.

“If I give $10 and you give $5 and someone else gives a dollar, it all adds up. A case of tuna can go far. No matter how small, at least it can be a meal,” she said.

“We have to all pitch in, we have to be our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers.”

She said organisations all over the country are relying heavily on the public to open their hearts to help others.

In addition to her food drive and community outreach, Lavita is quite willing to share her story of overcoming the abuse that led her to consider suicide at one point and how she found peace after her daughter’s death.

“I talk to anyone who wants to hear my story.

I have spoken to boys, schools, to churches. I speak to the families of victims of crime about forgiveness. I tell people that they can call me no matter the time and I am there to listen and help where I can,” she said.

Her book, “From Abuse to Glory”, will soon be released.

e t i m a n Dy Daisy goes digital THE WOMAN BEHIND THE MAKEUP TO REVEAL ALL GET ready to see more of one the Bahamas’ most beloved personalities, Dynamite Daisy.

The audacious character, played by Lynn Terez Davis-Nixon, has been steadily making her transition into the virtual world.

Though it has always been Terez’ plan to take Daisy digital, the journey is a completely new for the comedienne, who has always connected with audiences through her stand-up comedy and theatre productions.

But since the country has been put back in lockdown, it’s a transition she knows she has to make.

“Lately, Dynamite Daisy has been using technology and social media to stay connected,” she told Tribune Weekend.

The colourful character was a part of the first ever virtual Independence Day programme earlier this year.

Daisy’s three-minute skit encouraged Bahamians to keep moving forward and to look to the future in spite of the challenges of Hurricane Dorian and COVID-19.

Daisy also contributed to the national virtual graduation ceremony produced by the Ministry of Education. Her message to the graduates was that the country needs them to help shape a better future. She also produced a Mother’s Day video to

“Daisy continues to evolve. She is current and up with the time as she prepares to shift from live, in-person appearances to virtual shows via the internet and television,” said Terez.

“Daisy’s 13-week television episode aired on ZNS exclusively a few weeks ago to great reviews.”

Plans to film a new series are being discussed, and Dynamite Productions, the parent company for Daisy, is open to private partnerships, Terez added.

In the meantime, Daisy has been encouraging people to follow the health protocols such has washing hands frequently, wearing masks and practicing social distancing.

“Daisy has been making it by bolstering her faith in God. She also believes that exposure to the sun and fresh air is paramount along with eating from the ground as much as possible,” said Terez.

And to promote this message she released a video promoting backyard farming.

share our food, money, resources and love with each other,” said Terez.

Junkanoo ceramics celebrate Bahamian resilience

By JEFFARAH GIBSON • Tribune Features Reporter • jgibson@tribunemedia.net IMOGENE WALKINE has created countless ceramic art pieces over the years, many of which have focused on immortalising the spirit of Junkanoo. And it’s this theme she returns to with her latest work.

Her new ceramics celebrate this year’s Junkanoo parades which have postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They also seek to remind Bahamians who they are and where they came from.

“I am always in awe of the pride, strength, resilience and creativity of the Bahamian people and these pieces are intended to celebrate that... the connection to our ancestors and drawing on their strength and resilience,” she told Tribune Weekend.

Her latest ceramic work finally debuted last month after previously having been delayed. The artist had originally planned to release the work earlier this year, but was unable to do so due to travel restrictions as her art studio is located Eleuthera.

As always, all of her Junkanoo-inspired ceramic pieces are functional - they feature a mix of bowls and masks. Whether a bowl or mask, Imogene said she wanted to bring the energy of the beloved Junkanoo experience into everyday life in the home.

The bowls, she said, can simply be displayed or can be used to hold fruit or other items.

“The thing I like most about these pieces is the pride that they portray in our culture, as well as the life force of our history and culture that they exude,” said the artist who holds a Bachelor of Art degree in Art and Art History with Honours from Goldsmith’s College, University of London.

In order to create her newest ceramic pieces, Imogene researched African art as well as Junkanoo designs.

“In my Junkanoo masks, I also like to manifest the physical and emotional experience of Junkanoo ...in terms of the sweet, sweet breeze that blows across your face in the early morning hours. The breeze that dances over your skin.

In those moments, I’ve found, the best response is to just close your eyes and internalise all of the emotions that are felt. As a matter of fact, I was asked why the masks have closed eyes and don’t look like a real person. My response to that is the masks are not intended to look like

a real person. They are meant to represent the emotion of Junkanoo... the connection to our African brothers and sisters as well as our Bahamian brothers and sisters and basking in the blessing of freedom,” she said.

While her usually work reflects Junkanoo themes, particularly her masks, which seek to pay homage to the vibrant colours, dazzling textures and “mind-boggling” patterns found in the Bahamian environment, she also does more abstract and organic work as she seeks to “represent the life force and continual evolution which is within all of God’s creations.”

By KIM ARANHA CHIEF: “Hey, Buddy?”

Buddy: “Yo, Chiefie.”

Chief: “Yo? Buddy did you just say ‘yo’ to me….I mean, really?”

Buddy: “Well, you know Chiefie, I may have a grey muzzle but I am a pretty cool dude.”

Chief: “Dude? (Shaking his head)...Whatever!”

Buddy: “So anyway, Chiefie, what did you want?”

Chief: “Oh yes, you threw me off with that ‘Yo’. Do you know what Mum just said to me?”

Buddy: “Nooo, what did she say?”

Chief: “No.” Buddy: “What?

She said no? Oh Chiefie, that’s crushing.”

Chief: “She went so far as to say I had to get my mind around it! Can you imagine?

I just wanted to go out and bark at somebody. Do you think the COVID lockdown is getting to her?”

Buddy: “Well, I must say to use that word, Chiefie, I am dumbfounded; I simply don’t know what to say.”

Chief: “I can’t remember when I last heard her use that word. I was a puppy I guess.”

Buddy: “Well, what did you do or say to her?”

Chief: “It took me a bit to collect myself… I sat down in front of her, looked her straight in the eyes and I barked right at her.”

Buddy: “Oh Chief, you do make me laugh, you know.”

Chief: “It had the desired effect. I put my ears back in

their sad dog position, my tail stopped wagging and I looked at her. I could tell I had got to her. She immediately apologised, of course, and gave me a cuddle. I played hard to get and lay down with a huge sigh.”

Buddy: “Tell me about it, Chief, I am only one year behind you.”

Chief: “Do you like your new bed downstairs Bud?” Buddy: “Yes, thank you. It is a nice low sofa, easy to get on to and Mum made it look very pretty with the Indonesian cover.”

Chief: “She stays with you while you go to sleep, doesn’t she?”

Buddy: “Yes, because of my age, sometimes I get a little confused. She likes to

be sure that I am comfortable and not confused as I drift off to sleep. Some humans do not realise that we canines can get doggie dementia; sometimes I forget where I am. All I have to do is call out and she comes to me and guides me back. I have a special sounding woof and she recognises it immediately.”

Chief: “That’s what Mums are for!”

Buddy: “Yes, she also watches me when I go out the back of the house. She worries I might fall in the canal or the pool. I can swim, but I might get tired, so when I go out back they keep an eye on me.”

Chief: “She watches me too out there.”

Buddy: “Well, 13 and 14 are grand ages when you are a big dog, you know.”

Chief: “I heard her telling somebody on the phone that some people give up their dogs when they get old. That is terribly sad.”

Buddy: “I simply wouldn’t know what to do! She told me once that living with us senior dogs is a privilege and that she thinks we are both very wise and she loves us very much.”

Chief: “Yes, she does love us, though when she said no to me - sorry I just can’t forget the shock, when she said no - she also said that we were spoiled. Now there’s a good laugh!”

Buddy: “What a joke!

Spoiled indeed! What a nerve! All this talking has made me feel a bit tired. I think I will wander down the breezeway to her den and stand there and woof until she opens the door for me. I will have a drink from my raised water bowl that she bought to help with my arthritis, then I will climb up on my sofa and she will turn on the fan for me so I am nice and cool. How could she ever say we are spoiled?”

Chief: “Like I said, Bud, humans are strange.”

Natalie Wood 1938-1981 part one SIR CHRISTOPHER ONDAATJE writes about the Russian-American actress who became a Hollywood star and received three Oscar nominations by the time she was 25 years old. She died in mysterious circumstances.

Natalie Wood was born Natalia Nikolaevna Zakharenko in San Francisco, California, the daughter of Russian immigrant parents. Natalie’s father was born in Vladivostok – the son of a poor chocolate-factory worker who joined the anti-Bolshevik civilian forces during the Russian Civil War. Her grandfather was killed in a 1918 street fight between Russian soldiers – after which his wife and three sons fled to Montreal, Canada, and then moved to San Francisco where Nikolai, Natalie’s father, worked as a labourer and carpenter.

After Natalie was born in 1938, her family moved to Santa Rosa. Her mother would take her to the movies – where she got her only professional training watching Hollywood child stars while sitting on her mother’s lap.

“My mother used to tell me that the cameraman who pointed his lens out at the audience at the end of the Paramount Newsreel was taking my picture. I’d pose and smile like he was going to make me famous or something. I believed everything my mother told me.”

Her mother moved the family to Los Angeles – determined to pursue a film career for her daughter. David Lewis and William Goetz, studio executives at RKO Radio Pictures, changed her name to Natalie Wood. Wood made her screen debut in a fifteen-second scene in Happy Land (1943) before her fifth birthday. Director Irving Pichel saw the part and stayed in touch with Wood’s mother, telling her that he would contact her when another role came up. Two years later he asked Wood’s mother to bring young Natalie to Los Angeles for a screen test and Wood, now seven years old, got the part – as a post World War

II orphan with Orson Welles and Claudette Colbert in Tomorrow is Forever (1946).

Friday, August 14, 2020 Wood her first movie contract and she appeared in her first major role in Miracle on 34th Street (1947), starring Maureen O’Hara – a film which became a Christmas classic. She was immediately numbered as one of Hollywood’s best child stars.

Following Miracle on 34th Street Natalie Wood appeared in more than 20 films as a daughter in a series of family films: Fred MacMurray’s daughter in Father was a Fullback (1949), and Dear Brat (1951); Margaret Sullavan’s daughter in No Sad Songs for Me (1950); the younger sister in Our Very Own (1950); James Stewart’s daughter in The Jackpot (1950); Joan Blondell’s daughter in The Blue Veil (1951); and Bette Davis’ daughter in The Star (1952).

Wood received her primary education on studio lots. California law stipulated that, until child actors were 18 years old, they had to spend a minimum of three hours a day in classrooms. She was a bright student and was as gifted in arithmetic and other subjects as she was at acting. She was dominated by her mother who guided and coached every aspect of her daughter’s career. When she was nine she was listed as the most exciting juvenile acting star by Parents magazine. Her father, a heavy drinker, got some casual carpentry work but generally stayed out of the way. Wood’s younger sister, Svetlana Gurdin, was basically ignored by her mother. She is now known as Lana Wood, and also became an actress.

Wood played Ann Morrison – an older part – in the 1953-1954 television series The Pride of the Family, but then, according to Suzanne Finstad’s disturbing biography, Wood’s successful transition from child star to ingénue actress was plagued by manipulation by her stage-struck mother from hell who pushed aside every modicum of decency – including her other daughter – to gain favour with powerful people to enhance Wood’s film career. She set up her 15-year-old daughter to be seduced by the 38-year–old Frank Sinatra, and looked the other way while Wood had an affair with 43-year-old Nicholas Ray, landing her the starring role in Ray’s film about teenage rebellion, which co-starred James Dean and Sal Mineo – Rebel Without a Cause. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, and followed this with a small role in John Ford’s The Searchers (1956) – the same year that she graduated from high school.

Statutory rape in the United States refers to sexual relations involving someone below “the age of consent”. The age at which a person can legally consent to have sex varies from state to state. In most places it is 16, but some states set it at 17 or 18. Wood’s affairs with Sinatra and Nicholas Ray received no publicity or criticism. However, following her film performance in Rebel Without a Cause, according to her sister Lana, she was brutally raped for hours during an interview with a powerful Hollywood actor-producer at the famed Chateau Marmont Hotel. The act was ignored by her ambitious mother, anxious that it be hushed up by the so-called “Hollywood Mafia” – which it was.

Wood survived the ordeal to star in such memorable films as Splendour in the Grass, West Side Story and Inside Daisy Clover, but her private life never ceased to be haunted by fears and obsessions and conflicts. She led a double life and hid her vulnerability, showing the world a confident and carefree movie star. It is difficult not to conclude that her childhood demons played a part in her

Forgotten facts

A first-hand account of Nassau’s colourful characters from 1874

By PAUL C ARANHA THANKS to Ola Floyd, who allowed me to scan her large collection of Seighbert Russel’s writings, I came across Seighbert’s copy of a 1975 letter that he received from Eugene Dupuch. It sent me scurrying to revisit an 1874 edition of Harper’s Magazine. Excerpts of his description of the article are well worth repeating here: “I enclose a copy of an article, published in Harper’s in 1874, which I would like to share with a few of my friends, who are as interested as I am in the history of our colony. It is a magic vignette of the Nassau of a century ago (now 146 years ago) – a Nassau so different, in many ways, from the dilapidated township which bloomed into a sophisticated metropolis in our time yet, in other ways, so like the Nassau some of us remember, which still slumbers beneath the opaque veneer of the 20th century ... apart from the fact that the Royal Victoria cost $130,000 and a naughty Chief Justice, by the name of Lees, took $20,000, under the table, every paragraph is a nugget of golden memory, though

gardening LET us brighten things up a little with some flowers. How about flowers that also help to protect garden plants from pests?

Many people grow marigolds (Tagetes spp.) through the summer months as they are tough and relatively heat tolerant. They will grow throughout the year in our climate.

Not only are they a great addition to brighten things up a bit with freely flowering plants, but they are also a classic companion plant to vegetable and herb gardens as they may help to repel some harmful types of nematodes. This is possible due to what is called the Allelopathic Effect.

Allelopathy is the ability of an organism to produce chemicals that are toxic to other organisms.

Marigold roots release the chemical alpha-terthienyl, one of the most toxic naturally occurring compounds found to date (Gommers and Bakker, 1988). This chemical may be helpful in repelling some types of nematodes.

Nematodes are not visible to the naked eye. They are so tiny that a microscope is needed to see them.

While many nematode species are beneficial to the soil and not harmful to plants, they are also a common soil borne pest that can affect tomato plants as well as many others. It is estimated that around half of the known nematodes are herbivores which means they feed on the roots of plants, and often they will feed on desirable plants. Apparently, there is little research on nematodes in comparison to many plant pests, but there are also apparently only a small handful of experts on the subject that can identify new species (any future nematode experts out there?).

Marigolds interplanted in a veggie or herb garden are a common protection against the root-knot nematode, but they do not repel all nematodes that can create damage.

Another way that marigolds are used in nematode prevention is by turning them under the soil several weeks prior to replanting the area, and allowing them to compost under the soil which is meant to allow the active chemical to become present in the soil. Nematodes are a particularly stubborn plant pest to avoid, and even more stubborn and problematic to treat. Abaco Neem makes a neem cake product that they claim will repel and even treat nematodes in the garden. While I have not tried it out for myself, I

Marigolds are also beneficial to use in the garden because they attract beneficial insects such as ladybugs and parasitic wasps that

prey on garden pest insects. There is also some evidence that marigolds ward off cabbage worms from cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts.

Marigolds may need less water than most of the vegetable plants that you may be wanting to interplant with. Placing them around the edges or next to crops that prefer less water will increase the chances of success in growing them. There are two types of marigolds that are most common; French marigolds (native to Mexico and Guatemala) can reach a height between six to 24 inches depending upon the cultivar, and African marigolds (native to a handful of states in Mexico) reach a height of three to five feet depending upon the cultivar. It is important to consider this when planting and when deciding what to plant near.

Consider the height of the vegetable plants that you wish to intercrop with.

There are other flowering plants that are beneficial to the garden in their own way. One of these is the nasturtium. Nasturtium can be used as an indicator plant in that it attracts squash bugs, caterpillars, and aphids.

This attraction will allow these pests

to go to the nasturtium before they go to your desired vegetable crops.

In turn, when scouting the garden, it will allow the pest to be noticed before it gets into the desired crops.

Nasturtium flowers and leaves are edible and an attractive addition to salads or in artfully displayed cuisine, so it may be beneficial to not let the pests destroy them. They can act as a buffer plant between the onslaught of plant pests as marigolds can. With the use of companion planting of flowers in the garden it is hoped that the use of chemicals will be reduced.

Please refrain from using kill-all pesticides in the garden. Use companion planting, scouting, manual control, and gentle pesticides when necessary as a preventative. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of the cure (sound familiar?). The more balance that is achieved in the garden, the more the garden will contribute and produce.
