BBA launches inaugural summer camp !"#$%&'()'&# !*++%,(./0123#-45.67#+345.63. jburrows@ tribunemedia.net THE Bahamas Boxing Academy has launched its inaugural summer camp, welcoming 75 young Bahamians between the ages of eight and 17 for a fiveday programme focused on boxing and personal development. The camp marks the first summer camp hosted by the Academy since it opened its doors following its official ribbon-cutting ceremony by Prime Minister Philip Davis.

The five-day programme includes both male and female participants and features instruction in the fundamentals of boxing, leadership, teamwork, discipline and sports recreation. The Academy has also welcomed a delegation from Freeport, with the Grand Bahama participants staying on campus in the Academy’s dormitory facility while taking part in the camp. Minister of Youth and Sports Mario Bowleg stressed the importance of parents keeping young people involved in positive activities, particularly during the summer months

when they are out of school. “People want to belong to someone, some place, or something. They want to feel loved. And if we don’t pay attention to these kids, then somebody else will,” Bowleg said. Bowleg encouraged parents to take advantage of programmes such as the boxing academy as a way of helping young people develop positive habits and character from an early age. “We have to ensure that as parents and adults that we put these kids in positive activities so that we can create their character at a young age,” he said.

He said keeping young people engaged in structured programmes is especially important during the summer - usually when they have more free time on their hands. “I encourage all parents to look at organisations and youth organisations and programmes such as this as a boxing academy and try to get those kids involved in something positive,” Bowleg said. The minister also provided an assessment of the wider summer camp programmes supported through partnerships with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture,

describing the initiatives as very successful. Bowleg said the ministry places emphasis on ensuring that individuals working with young people are properly vetted and possess the necessary skills for the sporting disciplines they teach. “We go in great depth and make sure that the persons who are involved in these camps are vetted and also have the necessary skill sets for the various sporting disciplines,” he said. He added that the goal is for participants to leave the programmes with practical skills and lessons that they

can carry into their homes and communities. “All youth programmes will be able to teach these young people the skill sets so that when they leave these camps, that they have something new that they would have learned to take back to their homes and their families or their social environments around them,” Bowleg said. The Bahamas Boxing Academy’s inaugural camp will continue over the next five days, giving the participants an opportunity to develop their boxing skills while learning lessons in discipline, teamwork and leadership.

BBF honours FIBA 3x3 national teams !"#$%&'()'&# !*++%,(./0123#-45.67#+345.63. jburrows@ tribunemedia.net THE Bahamas Basketball Federation honoured both of The Bahamas’ FIBA 3x3 teams at a press conference following their performances at the 2026 3x3 Caribbean Cup, where both the men’s and women’s team captured gold. Michael Munnings emerged as the tournament’s leading scorer, finishing the two stops of the Caribbean Cup with 63 total points, including 39 points during championship day, to lead the entire field in scoring and help Team Bahamas secure the men’s title.

Stevacko Jacques added 26 points for the men, while Qui’Andre Robinson scored 11 and Whitfield “Woody” Ching finished with six. On the women’s side, Michelle Butler and Jada Francis led the way with 18 points each, followed by Shenell Stewart with 15 and Tania Kerr with three. The performances have also renewed discussion about the potential of 3x3 basketball in The Bahamas, particularly as the discipline continues to develop internationally and remains part of the Olympic programme. Men’s head coach Marvin Henfield believes the country has significant potential in the format and said 3x3 could provide another pathway for Bahamian basketball to reach the

MARVIN HENFIELD international stage. “I think the sky is the limit for us,” Henfield said. While much of the attention surrounding Bahamian basketball remains focused on traditional five-on-five

competition, Henfield believes 3x3 deserves greater investment, particularly on the women’s side. “I know a lot of emphasis is placed on 5v5 basketball, but I think as it relates to the female side of the game, I think it’s our quickest path to qualifying,” he said. “I think I can go on the record saying I feel similarly about the men’s because it’s a wide open ball game.” Henfield said the recent Caribbean Cup performances demonstrated that Bahamian players can quickly adapt to the format despite having limited experience playing it. “The game is built for the Bahamians,” he said. “And I think it just shows with their lack of experience, but with the talent

that we have in this country, that was very much on display.” The coach pointed to the reduced number of players on the court as one of the reasons the Bahamian players were able to make an immediate impact. “Even though they were new to the game, their individual talent, their individual skills put together in the half court with 40 per cent less players, it just changed and made it so much easier for them,” Henfield said. He challenged the federation to increase its investment in the discipline. “I would challenge them to really look into spending and investing more in the game of 3x3 on the men’s side, but primarily on

the female side,” Henfield stated. Henfield explained that 3x3 is played continuously on a half court, with games using one and two-point scoring rather than the traditional two and threepoint system. “There are no stops except on dead balls,” he said. “Substitutions are done strategically by the individuals. There’s no coaching involved on the sideline.” That also creates a different role for coaches during competition. “As coaches, we have to sit in the stands,” Henfield said. “So all the strategies are put in before the game.” Henfield said The Bahamas must continue to

Bahamas Basketball Federation honours FIBA 3x3 national teams FIBA, from Page 1 compete in international events if it wants to improve its standing and move closer to Olympic qualification. He said the country needs to play three events between now and October 1 to begin accumulating the necessary points and experience, while also developing local leagues and qualifying tournaments. Henfield also believes 3x3 can play a major role in the development of young basketball players and should be introduced more extensively in Bahamian schools. “If I could speak honestly, me, as a coach and someone that’s heavily involved in development of basketball, 3x3 is the ideal game that should be used for teaching,” he said. With only six players on the court compared to 10 in five-on-five, Henfield said young players receive more opportunities to handle the ball, defend and make decisions.

“You’ve got 40 per cent less players on the court, there’s only six players compared to 10, it’s easier to teach, there’s more spacing, there’s more abilities for the individuals or for the athletes to get more touches,” he said. Henfield also pointed to the defensive demands of the format. “You can’t hide in 3x3, so you have to learn to play individual defence,” he said. “And then also the team concept or the team help side of the defence is elevated because you have to play defence, and if there’s a position or an opportunity to help, you’ve got to help.” He believes that combination makes 3x3 valuable not only as a competitive discipline, but also as a foundation for developing players who can eventually transition into five-on-five basketball. “I would love for The Bahamas to really ride this wave and make an investment in 3x3,” Henfield said. “Basketball as a whole, but

3x3, because I think this is where the foundation of the game can be built.” The growth of 3x3 could also create opportunities for Bahamian officials. Therese, a Bahamian official who has transitioned from five on five to 3x3 officiating, said the format has provided her with another avenue to develop her officiating skills. She previously served as a FIBA certified five-onfive official before being asked to officiate a 3x3 tournament in The Bahamas in December. “I fell in love with it,” she said. Her experience at the Caribbean Cup in Cayman allowed her to build on what she learned during the December tournament. “For me, it’s more experience,” she said. “If we can get it established locally, then we can get more experience, get more referees involved.” She also believes 3x3 can serve as a development platform for officials who

want to advance to the five on five level. “It can also be a training ground for our officials to move to the 5-on-5 level,” she said. “So we can partner with it in that way where it’s not only a training ground for the players, but it’s also a training ground for the referees.” The success of The Bahamas’ teams at the Caribbean Cup has given the federation another opportunity to build interest in a discipline that remains relatively new to many Bahamian basketball fans. Henfield says the next step is turning the recent success into a sustained programme through more international competition, local development and greater investment. “I think ultimately, the sky’s the limit for us,” he said. “And I hope that everyone that’s watching and seeing this, that’s never played the game, would at least give it a try. And I think it’s built primarily for us.”

Blockbuster $12.5 billion deal as Kushner and Iger agree to buy Lakers, AP source says !"#$%&$#!&'()'*# '+#,-./01#2/304/ LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers basketball organisation is being sold for the second time in a year, going to businessmen Josh Kushner and Bob Iger for a record-breaking price. This sale agreement is $12.5 billion, according to a person familiar with the terms who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity yesterday because neither side revealed specific details of the latest stunning development with one of North America's marquee sports teams. ESPN first reported that Kushner and Iger are buying the NBA's most valuable franchise. The Lakers were valued last year at $10 billion — a record for a pro sports team — when Mark Walter purchased a controlling stake from the Buss family, which had owned the team since 1979. “As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honoured for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in

the world,” Iger and Kushner said in a statement. “We have immense respect for the leadership and vision of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles.” Kushner, a venture capitalist, and former Walt Disney Company CEO Iger had been working together on landing a possible NBA expansion team for Las Vegas. By buying the Lakers, they don't have to wait until the possibility of expansion in the 2028-29 season at the earliest. Lakers icon Magic Johnson, a partner in Walter's ownership of baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers, praised the deal on social media. “Laker fans, you couldn’t have two better owners,” Johnson wrote. “I’ve known Bob personally for over 40 years — he has always loved the Lakers and basketball and he will bring championships back to LA.” The sale still will need approval from the NBA’s board of governors, and that process can take several weeks. The next board

meeting is set for September in New York. The $12.5 billion price tag is not only a record for U.S. pro sports but a new summit in skyrocketing NBA franchise values. Only three years ago, Michael Jordan sold his majority stake in the Charlotte Hornets for a $3 billion valuation, while the Boston Celtics were sold last year to private equity mogul Bill Chisholm at a valuation of just over $6 billion. Walter’s agreement to purchase a controlling stake in the Lakers at the $10 billion valuation last summer obliterated that mark, and now Iger and Kushner have pushed the bar even higher. The 66-year-old Walter’s shocking decision to sell after just 10 months of official ownership is reverberating throughout the team’s massive fan base, which appeared to be uniformly excited about the purchase last year. Walter has stewarded the Dodgers into the most successful stretch in franchise history, with three World Series championships in the past six seasons as the most aggressive spenders in baseball.

SACRAMENTO, California. (AP) — Russell Westbrook, the NBA's career leader in triple-doubles and the 2017 MVP, announced yesterday he's retiring after 18 seasons during which he was selected to the league's 75th anniversary team. The two-time scoring champion shared his decision on social media in a post featuring a video narrated by actor Michael B Jordan where the guard never says a word. “Sometimes you don’t even know when you’ve already watched the end,” Westbrook wrote.

“You had to be there. And now it’s over.” Westbrook was the No. 4 pick in 2008 out of UCLA by the Seattle SuperSonics, just before they moved to Oklahoma City He played his first 11 seasons with the Thunder and spent this past season with the Sacramento Kings. Westbrook led the NBA in assists three times and was a two-time MVP of the All-Star Game. He won an Olympic gold medal in the 2012 London Games. Westbrook leaves with 209 triple-doubles, the last on March 15. Nikola Jokic ranks second in that category with

198 going into this season. Westbrook also holds the NBA mark for most triple-doubles in a season with 42 in 2016-17, when he earned his only MVP award. He averaged double figures for points and assists in five of six seasons starting in the 2015-16 season. Westbrook also played for Houston, Washington, the Lakers and Clippers — splitting the 2022-23 season between the Los Angeles teams and Denver. Last season, Westbrook started 58 of the 64 games he played for Sacramento. He averaged 15.2 points and 6.7 assists.

Paris Saint-Germain retains UEFA Super Cup

!"#$%&'&#()*+,-$# -.#$/0123#415261 PARIS Saint-Germain won the UEFA Super Cup for a second straight year by beating Aston Villa 2-1 yesterday thanks to Désiré Doué’s second-half goal in the annual curtain-raiser to the European soccer season. Doué’s 61st-minute strike after running onto Ousmane Dembélé's pass was initially ruled out for offside, only for the goal to be awarded following a video review. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s powerfully struck opener in the 20th was cancelled out by a volley from Brian Madjo, a 17-year-old striker making his competitive debut for Villa days after getting approval to play following a dispute with FIFA over his registration. It’s the first of a possible six trophies this season for PSG, which became the first team to win back-to-back Super Cup titles since Real Madrid (2016 and ’17). The Super Cup is an annual early-season match between the most recent winners of the Champions League (PSG) and Europa League (Villa).

Referee was the Somali official barred from World Cup The game in Salzburg, Austria, was refereed by Omar Artan, the Somali who was barred by the United States from officiating at the World Cup days before the start of FIFA’s tournament because of vetting concerns. US officials claimed Artan had connections to terror organisations, though without providing proof. UEFA responded by picking Artan — a referee judged the best in Africa last season — to take charge of the Super Cup in a powerplay by European soccer’s governing body amid its increasing disconnect with FIFA. That disharmony has increased since, with UEFA leading the campaign to oust Gianni Infantino from the FIFA presidency over his recent — aborted — plan to sell an interest in the World Cup. Artan was the first non-European referee to take charge of the Super Cup. Another season, another trophy for PSG After winning five titles last season, PSG is back on

the debut by the powerfully built teenager who was born in north London, has played three friendly matches for Luxembourg, and now has decided to represent England. Madjo joined Villa from French club Metz in January but FIFA blocked his registration because its transfer rules limit international moves by players under the age of 18. Villa appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and it was upheld last week, allowing him to make his club debut as the youngest player to feature in a Super Cup. !"#$%&'(#)'*$'+,# '--./01234#563-ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — Jayden Daniels’ injury-ridden second NFL season ended in December when the Washington Commanders opted to sit their franchise quarterback for the final three games to preserve his health. Daniels understood the decision but was disappointed and wanted to play. Eight months later, Daniels got his first chance to face another team when the Miami Dolphins arrived at the Commanders’ headquarters yesterday for a joint practice. The quarterback put on a show in front of a crowd that included Secretary of State Marco Rubio and rapper Wale. “It’s a new year,” Daniels said. “I don’t want to compare what I did my first two years. Now I’m on to a new season, a new year. I’m just trying to be the best version of myself every day.” The first competition consisted of 1-on-1 drills between wide receivers and defensive backs. Daniels was surgical throughout, completing 11 of 13 passes, including touchdowns to Terry McLaurin, Stefon

Commanders’ Jayden Daniels shines in joint NFL practice against Dolphins Daniels has spent much of his offseason learning a new offence. Coordinator David Blough’s system features more traditional formations with the QB under centre, a stark difference from Kliff Kingsbury’s shotgun-heavy scheme that Daniels ran the past two years. Nearly all of Daniels’ snaps during 11-on-11 work came from under centre yesterday, and he looked comfortable. “As reps and time go on, you get more of a grasp and a feel for who can run what route, how Blough is supposed to call it,” Daniels said. “This is what practice is for. Diggs, who signed with the Commanders just last week, was a frequent target of Daniels throughout the day. The duo has already built chemistry — largely thanks to Diggs’ ability to find open space. “He goes out and makes plays,” Daniels said. “He brings energy. He’s a leader. Washington’s run game struggled, but the Daniels-led aerial attack made up for it. Daniels’ best throw of the day came when he faked a handoff, rolled to his right and uncorked a deep ball to Burks for a 70-yard touchdown, beating Miami defenders Zayne Anderson and Michael Taaffe.
