Jonquel Jones contributes 14 points and 10 rebounds for Liberty in 106-92 loss to Fever !"#$%&'()*#$(+,-# (.#/01234#526372 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Kelsey Mitchell scored 20 of her 28 points in the first half, and Caitlin Clark added 22 points and 10 assists to lead the Indiana Fever to a 106-92 victory over the New York Liberty last night. Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu each had 19 points for the Liberty. And Jonquel Jones finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. She also contributed three blocks, two assists and a steal. Indiana has won seven of its last nine, and this one came after coach Stephanie White's 2 1/2-minute pregame outburst, defending herself while also calling out the sideshows she thinks have overshadowed the WNBA. This time, it seemed to fuel the Fever, who shot

59 per cent from the field and 79 per cent from threepoint range as they took a 64-46 halftime lead against New York, which had gone 8-1 since losing by 20 to Indiana in mid-July. And this time, unlike last week against defending WNBA champion Las Vegas, they didn't allow a double-digit lead to slip away. Mitchell was 11 of 16 from the field and she, like Clark and Sophie Cunningham, each made four 3s on a night Indiana finished with 16 on 25 attempts. Cunningham had 12 points, and Aliyah Boston added 19 points and seven rebounds. Indiana took control with a 15-7 run late in the second quarter, extending the lead to 54-37. When Indiana's 3s stopped falling in the third quarter, New York charged back quickly and

Super Cup: PSG vs Aston Villa, UEFA vs FIFA !"#$%&'&#()*+,-$ ./0#1&2)3&# 4*+352&# -4#$6789:#;8<9=8: BARELY three weeks after the World Cup final, the first trophy of the new European soccer season is up for grabs in the UEFA Super Cup between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in Salzburg today. The annual match between the most recent winners of the Champions League and Europa League also offers another chance for more grandstanding by UEFA at the expense of FIFA at a time of a growing disconnect between the two powerful soccer governing bodies in light of the recent conduct of Gianni Infantino. That's because refereeing the game will be Omar Artan, the Somali referee who was barred by the United States from officiating at the World Cup days before the start of the tournament because of vetting concerns. US officials claimed Artan had connections to

terror organisations, though without providing proof. UEFA responded by picking Artan — a referee judged the best in Africa last season — to take charge of the Super Cup, a move that was widely celebrated in the soccer community and also was regarded as a clever political ploy by the European association. The disharmony between UEFA and FIFA has increased since, with UEFA leading the campaign to oust Infantino from the FIFA presidency over his recent — aborted — plan to sell an interest in the World Cup. And so, the referee taking charge of the match is proving to be as interesting as the players involved, as PSG looks to become the second team in the modern era to retain the Super Cup, after Real Madrid (2016 and 2017). PSG beat Tottenham in a penalty shootout in last year's match. PSG's World Cup stars return PSG’s players came back to preseason training in

Ousmane Dembélé, who stood out for France with six goals and two assists, returned on Monday along with international teammates Désiré Doué and Bradley Barcola. They were joined by Spain’s World Cup-winning midfielder Fabián Ruiz, whose clinical performance was key to the semifinal victory over France. Star winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia didn't play at the tournament because Georgia did not qualify and has been back training for considerably longer. He looks certain to start in his favoured position on the left flank, with new signing Maghnes Akliouche possibly on the right wing. Akliouche’s arrival from Monaco could coincide with Barcola’s departure, with the fleet-footed winger — who scored three goals at the World Cup — heavily linked with a move to Premier League giant Liverpool. Coach Luis Enrique’s team may also feature former Villa player Lucas Digne.

LeBron James will play his first game with 76ers against champion NY Knicks on opening night !"#!$%&'#(&)*'+,# &-#!./0123.44#567216 NEW YORK (AP) — LeBron James will visit the New York Knicks on opening night and the Los Angeles Lakers on Christmas. James' arrival in Philadelphia has made the 76ers must-see TV, and they are all over the NBA's biggest days of the season. James will make his 76ers debut against the NBA champion Knicks on October 20. The game at Madison Square Garden will be part of a tripleheader, when the Knicks raise a banner to celebrate their first championship since 1973 and James then kicks off the final stop in his career. He will return to LA to face the Lakers

NBA unveils ‘sneak peek’ at 2026-27 schedule - full slate of games set to be released Thursday on Christmas, after Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs are back in New York for an NBA Finals rematch to open a five-game schedule. The NBA unveiled those games yesterday as what it called a “sneak peek” at the 2026-27 schedule. The full schedule will be released Thursday.

The season begins with the Boston Celtics visiting Detroit in a rare 3pm EDT start for a midweek game. The tripleheader is capped by the Spurs hosting Oklahoma City in a rematch of the Western Conference finals. Those three games — opening night traditionally has featured two in recent

ESPN then has all five games on Christmas. That schedule: San Antonio at New York, Miami at Boston, Philadelphia at Los Angeles, Oklahoma City at Minnesota and Denver at Golden State. James’ new team was always going to have a prominent place on the schedule, so the NBA struggled to put the puzzle together while waiting for his decision. Commissioner Adam Silver even said last month that he wanted James to announce his decision because teams and networks were calling to ask when the schedule would be completed. The NBA's career scoring leader said it would be the

76ers about a week later, joining a team that already had acquired All-Star Jaylen Brown from Boston and is expected to be one of the top challengers for the Knicks' title. James will play his first home game in Philadelphia on October 22 against Cleveland, one of his former teams that hoped to get the 41-year-old Ohio native back for a third time. That will be part of an ESPN doubleheader preceding Denver visiting Oklahoma City. Minnesota visits Miami to highlight the schedule on October 21, when most teams will open their seasons. The Heat acquired two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo from Milwaukee — and tried to bring James back as well — and the Timberwolves traded for flashy point guard LaMelo Ball. Golden State then faces the Lakers to cap that ESPN doubleheader.

The Spurs are also a top draw now behind Wembanyama, the NBA Defensive Player of the Year who helped San Antonio win Game 7 of the West finals in Oklahoma City to end the Thunder's title reign. This will be his second time playing at Madison Square Garden on Christmas, after he delivered a massive 42-point, 18-rebound performance in 2024 in a loss in his first time playing on the holiday. This matchup will be his first time back on the court in New York since the Knicks set an NBA Finals record by rallying from 29 points down for a 107-106 victory in Game 4. They won the title in San Antonio in the next game. San Antonio will face Houston and former Longhorns star Kevin Durant in a game at the University of Texas on October 23 airing on Prime Video, the back of a doubleheader starting with the Knicks at the Celtics.

Dolphins new head coach sees value in mistakes as his young team prepares for the preseason !"#*8*&'(#9:*;%(# */#(<0.2=#).627. MIAMI GARDENS, Florida (AP) — Jeff Hafley wants to see the mistakes. Of course the Miami Dolphins first-year head coach does not want his players missing assignments, lining up offsides or running the wrong routes on game days. But he has stressed to his young team the importance of pushing beyond their comfort zones during training camp, even if that means getting things wrong. “Some guys get so comfortable, right?” Hafley said Monday. “And they’re so scared to make a mistake that they play things safe. How do you grow if you’re going to play things safe? That doesn’t make any sense to me because you’re comfortable or you don’t want to look bad? It’s not about looking bad.” Hafley has taken that approach himself, testing out different snap counts for quarterbacks and living with pre-snap penalties if they come early on. Similarly, the former defensive coordinator wants players to test different techniques and learn what works for them. During a recent practice, that meant encouraging a cornerback to use his hands and length more during team drills. "Like step out of your comfort zone. Don’t worry about the results," Hafley said. "That’s what practice is for. That’s why I get mad in practice. I think bad coaching is when a guy gets beat and you just go up and

you yell at him. No, ask him, ‘What did you do? What did you see? What did you try? Did it work? Let’s go back and watch it on film.’ If a guy’s not running to the ball or he’s (showing) lack of effort or physicality then yeah, yell at him. But this is where these guys get paralyzed in their minds, and I just don’t want that to happen. “So when I see a long corner and I get a flashback, ‘You’re not using your length. Step and punch and try something different.’ I think that’s huge for everybody on our team, and it’s just how we need to coach these guys.” That approach will be tested this week as the Dolphins prepare for today’s joint practice against Washington ahead of Friday's preseason opener. Hafley hasn't said whether starters like quarterback Malik Willis or running back De'Von Achane will suit up, but the coach said Monday everyone on the team “needs to be ready to play.” “You never know what to expect, but you kind of just go out there, and it’s like a regular practice. You just start,” said tackle Patrick Paul, whose brother, Chris, is an offensive lineman for the Commanders. “There’s no like pre-anything. It’s just from the jump you’re going. It’s going to bring the best out of a lot of people because you’re going against new competition. These aren’t your teammates. These are people you’re about to play, so you

Making Moves The Dolphins agreed to acquire offensive tackle Caedan Wallace and a 2029

seventh-round pick from the New England Patriots on Monday in exchange for a 2028 sixth-rounder. That deal is pending a physical.

Wallace, a third-round pick out of Penn State by the Patriots in 2024, has played in 10 games with two starts over the past two seasons.

Also Monday, the Dolphins placed kicker Zane Gonzalez on injured reserve and signed cornerback Nick McCloud as they deal with injuries in their secondary.

Buccaneers-Jets joint practice turns chippy, with a few fights and a helmet thrown !"#$%&&'(#)*(+*,#-. */#/.0#10023455#).627. FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Footballs and fists were thrown. Trash talk was hurled throughout, too. It all made for one competitive and, at times, heated joint practice for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets yesterday. The first of four scuffles started, according to Bucs right tackle Luke Goedeke, when Jets rookie edge rusher David Bailey called him out during 1-on-1 drills because he wanted to go up against him. “And lost,” Goedeke said of Bailey. The two lined up against each other several times and the No. 2 overall draft pick appeared to mostly get the better of the veteran O-lineman. They stalemated on one and Bailey appeared to pat Goedeke on the helmet. It set off a fracas that included Goedeke and Bailey taking swings at each other and players from both sides jumping in. “He tried shoving me after that and then 52, I believe, came from the side and just cheap-shotted me,” Goedeke said, referring to Jets edge rusher Kingsley Enagbare. “That didn't start practice warm and fuzzy, that's for sure.”

Later, the two were still jawing on the field during 11-on-11 team drills when Jarius Monroe returned an interception of Baker Mayfield for a touchdown when another huge fight broke out. During the melee, Goedeke took the helmet of Jets cornerback Qwan'tez Stiggers and flung it about 20 yards downfield. “Obviously, not the greatest decision by me,” Goedeke said. “But with that being said, I'm always going to defend my players. I'm always going to defend myself, for that matter. I'm not going to get punked and not do anything about it, especially on a football field. It just comes with the game, I guess, especially in joint practices, you see stuff like this all the time. "Obviously, you try to limit it and make sure it doesn't happen in a game.” Jets right tackle Armand Membou and Bucs defensive tackle A'Shawn Robinson also fought, and Robinson tore off Membou's helmet. New York rookie defensive tackle Darrell Jackson Jr had a fight that involved several Tampa Bay players. The teams were scheduled to have another joint practice today before their preseason opener Friday night. Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles said there were “a

Vea, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, is entering the final year of his deal and wants a new contract. He missed the first few days of practice with what Bowles said was a tweaked back, but Vea has continued to not participate. Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht recently told reporters the team has no plans to trade Vea. Vea joins Mayfield as Bucs players unhappy with their contracts. Mayfield said early in training camp he feels “disrespected” by

the team for not getting the contract extension he sought. He's fully participating at practice, unlike Vea, and plans to play out the final season of his threeyear, $100 million deal. Jets set to play starters against Bucs in preseason opener Geno Smith and the rest of the Jets starters will see snaps in the preseason opener. “Oh, everybody's playing,” Glenn said. Glenn explained that the team has two new

systems being installed — his defence as the primary play caller and Frank Reich's offence — “and I think it's important for our guys to play,” he added. Glenn also said there is “science” behind the decision. “What they say is when you have joint practices where the (starters) get a lot of reps and then you have that many plays — 25 to 30 in a preseason game — throughout those three games, the risk of injury actually goes down in that first part of the year,” Glenn said. "Just talking to those guys, I’m a big believer in that, so I’m looking forward to seeing that.” Bucs' Browning leaves practice early with a pparent injury Buccaneers backup quarterback Jake Browning was expected to start against the Jets, but he left practice early with what appeared to be a back ailment. Bowles had no update on the status of Browning, who walked off the field gingerly after team drills midway through practice. He took his jersey off and went inside the Jets' facility and didn't return to practice. Mayfield won't play in the game Friday night, so if Browning can't go, the Buccaneers are down to Connor Bazelak and undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels at quarterback.
