Sisters kicking it for themselves

A

s part of its mantra to “Protect Our Girls”, the Leading Ladies 2018 summer retreat taught its young participants how to punch, kick and otherwise defend themselves in the event they are ever attacked.

The Leading Ladies organisation hosted its annual three-day retreat at the Treasure Cay Beach Resort in Abaco.

It took the form of a series of workshops, presentations, meditation and activities for teenage girls in the island community. During the retreat, the young ladies especially learned about violence and abuse against women, and how to find the power to speak out against such acts.

The retreat featured worship sessions, health and fitness exercises, self-defence sessions by Janice Roberts and an art empowerment session led by Leanne Russell. Mentors, including Jade Williams, a singer/songwriter and a graduate of the University of the Bahamas; Michelle Louidor, a fashion model and founder of Ladies Influence for Tomorrow (LIT), and a member of Savage100 helped to build confidence in the girls.

“The highlight of the retreat was definitely the self-defence class lead

by Janice Roberts, owner of Empowerment Fitness,” said Chantal O’Brian, former Miss World Bahamas who formed the Leading Ladies organisation along with Moline Jeune Pierre.

“The girls really enjoyed learning how to punch, kick and different manoeuvres to get out of difficult situations, especially when being attacked. The class was held on the Coco Beach in Treasure Cay. It was very hands-on and interactive.

The girls were really focused and got involved with Ms Roberts. Ms Roberts has eight years of experience in MMA fighting and kickboxing.”

A part from teaching the young girls about sexual violence, the retreat was also designed to provide a relaxing, open, educational and

healthy friendships and relationship during in the retreat’s participants.

“Aside from a relaxing getaway, I think the girls really learned that they are valuable and worthy of

love and respect. I also believe that they received an understanding of the value of friendship, having each others’ backs and standing up with each other, especially in the face of negativity, and (learned) that there is strength in their voice. Which is exactly what the Leading Ladies organisation represents – strong women who stand together. This retreat will not be the final thing we do as this organisation; we will continue to pour into these ladies as much as we can,” said Chantal.

interview After falling in love with the Bahamas as a child, a young environmentalist is returning to these shores to try and help rid our turquoise waters and beaches of unsightly and harmful plastic waste. The American entrepreneur tells Cara Hunt about the steps his company is taking in what has become a huge and vital battle for the health of our planet.

s a boy, American Jayson Adam Stewart visited Eleuthera several times and fell in love with its beau-

tiful beaches, His love of the environment continued through college and eventually he decided it would form the basis of his career.

Three years ago, Jayson created PL28 Inc, a company which seeks to rid the planet of “its toxic relationship” with trash and in particular plastic.

The company has travelled to several American states, as well as Haiti and the Philippines, working to remove a massive pile-up of plastics in ocean and coastal areas, whether by sending divers into the water or conducting coastal clean-ups to remove all plastic materials.

And now the environmentalist is returning to the country he fell in love to help clean the Bahamian waters and coastal areas.

In an interview with Tribune Weekend, Jayson explained that his company takes a three-fold approach to eliminating plastic waste.

“We remove plastic that is currently in our water. We allocate the resources collected into our projects.

And we prevent future pollution by redesigning harmful products and making them sustainable,” he explained.

“The idea (for creating the company) came to me just after college.

I began to realise what bad shape the environment was in and I decided that I would focus on plastics because of the existential threat that it poses

To date, the company has removed more than 40,000 pounds of plastic and Jayson expects that they will very soon pass the one million pound mark.

The amount may be staggering, but it’s really not when you consider that according to EarthDay. org about eight million metric tonnes of plastic are thrown into the ocean annually, of those, 36,000 tonnes are micro plastics – tiny pieces of broken-down plastic smaller than your little fingernail.

“If you were to scoop up a cup of water (from the ocean), there would be millions of plastic particles inside the cup, so tiny that you would never be able to tell what they were originally,” said Jayson.

There are five massive patches of plastic in the oceans around the world. These huge concentrations of plastic debris cover large swaths of the ocean; the one between California and Hawaii is the size of the state of Texas.

Marine life can become entangled in plastic bags, but eating plastic

products can be fatal because when they ingest the plastics, the toxins are absorbed into the body and passed along the food chain. Additionally, as plastic breaks apart in the ocean, potentially toxic chemicals such as bisphenol can enter the food cycle.

THE MAJOR global garbage patches, also known as gyres. are beginning to call for bans of the use of popular non-biodegradable plastics such as shopping bags and one-use items like drinking straws.

Much of the plastic that is disposed comes from plastic straws. “They are everywhere,” said Jayson. “Another thing we see a tonne of are cigarettes, which are not plastic but which we see all the time.”

Jayson says that as a true nature lover and someone genuinely concerned about the sustainability of the planet, it can be extremely frustrating to see the garbage and waste that they find.

“I think it is a combination of people not knowing the effects – so we need more education – and consumer habits that make them make the choices that they do,” he said.

“But what makes me the most upset are the huge corporations which have the resources to make real change and who have not bothered to make more of an effort. They are the ones who have the ability to do things right.

Jayson explained that his company focuses on ensuring that any material they collect does not return to the environment.

“Our end-of-life collection plan is highly effective in preventing items from re-circulating back into the cycle of pollution. We believe that no company should continue to

manufacture physical goods without adopting our approach.”

“We believe that irresponsible manufacturing practices are destroying our planet. Manufacturers of physical goods bear a heavy burden.

Our goal is to set a new manufacturing standard, then share our blueprint with the world. With committed,

focused effort, we can help heal the planet.

“In addition, any product manufactured by PL28 can be returned to us for cash. We’ll even pay for shipping,” he said.

In a few weeks, Jayson said PL28 will be visiting the Bahamas as well as Australia and California.

PL28inc will spend time canvassing the country to determine if the Bahamas is a viable spot to extract plastic.

“It feels right on so many levels,” Jayson says of the decision to come to the Bahamas.

“I fell in love with Eleuthera and Harbour Island and how amazing the beaches were. They are the best in the world and I would love to do my part, to help preserve the beauty of the beach and help to keep them pristine.”

“When we come to the Bahamas we will really just be exploring what our options are. We have heard that there may be a lot of potential on New Providence and on Grand Bahama.” ​

‘The Coffee Lady’ goes international

W

ith a social media following in the thousands, Minolta Butler has made a name for herself both here at home and abroad.

Calling her creations “Art Buy”, Minolta makes so-called coffee art, pencil and illustration portraits of popular celebrities such as Rihanna, DJ Khaled, Viola Davis, Beyonce and Tupac, as well as Bahamian great such as the late Sir Durward Knowles, Sawyer Boy TV, and others.

Her creative journey, she said, started at the early age of five when she took pleasure in drawing the cartoon characters even before learning to write her ABCs. “Art has been the only thing I’ve genuinely connected with and because of this I became an artist. Over the

years I’ve had great exposure with my art. I have been featured in both RBC and Scotiabank calendars, became the youngest instructor at the RBC Finco art workshop, and had my work featured in art galleries,” said Minolta.

In recent years, her gained international attention, even making the popular site The Shade Room.

Her coffee staininspired art became her most successful and signature style of art, thus giving her the nickname “The Coffee Lady.”

Last year, Minolta won the Staff Choice Award in

the Central Bank’s Annual art competition; became a 2017 Elevation Awards nominee in the category of Fine Arts, and again in 2018, as well as a Bahamian Icon nominee in Fine Arts.

She believes art is the perfect avenue for doing what you love and making a living while doing it.

“It gives people an understanding of who you are and how your mind works.

Can you imagine travelling, meeting people around the world or gaining access to the ‘finer things’ all because you’re brave enough to

showcase your talent to the world? I think it was more than my craft that grew Art Buy, it was also my attitude and confidence as an artist,” Minolta told Tribune Weekend.

For her, this journey is all about reflecting on life and inviting others along for the ride.

“I welcome viewers to journey into these interpretations. Right now I’m working on publishing my work to a bigger audience, travelling, opening up my studio, working on a solo exhibition and many more to come. This year will be full of surprises so you’ll just have to wait and see what I have up my sleeve,” she said.

Flying high PACKED HOUSE FOR BAHAMAS’ FIRST AERIAL MUSICAL

A

hit, sold-out musical marked a first major step towards diversifying and revolutionising Bahamian arts for the group Performing Spaces.

Fantastic, imaginative and supernatural images captivated the audience who were left in awe at times as the “I Am Aeriel: The Musical” was staged in Nassau last Sunday.

The production was the presented

by Performing Spaces and told the inspiring story of five siblings who are visited one night by a being from another dimension.

The siblings are taken on an enchanting and magical journey throughout space and time as the move from a place of tragedy to one of hope.

The musical, which was showcased in conjunction with Bahamas

Christian Fellowship Centre, incorporated live music, song, dance, acting, and for the first time in a live Bahamian theatrical performance, gravity-defying aerial arts using a high-speed motor.

“I am Aeriel” boasted a cast of approximately 50 talented Bahamian youth. In addition, playing the lead role of Aeriel, was world-renowned aerialist and actor Cheetah Platt from Las Vegas. He has performed for Disney and Cirque du Soleil.

The show was the result of a process that started five weeks ago when Performing Spaces launched its summer camp to train children and youths in the arts. Local instructors, as well as Mr Platt as a special guest, provided training in music, dance, acting and the aerial arts.

Michelle Butler, who directed and produced “I Am Aeriel” along with Dana Burrows, said the showcase was “exciting and mesmerising”.

“But the highlight of the night was when Aeriel took the character Hazel to the stars. They both performed a heart-dropping aerial arts duet. The audience was completely captivated by this particular performance. You could hear a pin drop in the audience as she was suspended 30 feet in the air,” Ms Butler told Tribune Weekend.

“There was an overwhelming response by the public. The one-night only show was sold out and packed to capacity, with the lines extending to the road. We have and are still receiving rave reviews of the show, with many persons asking about an encore. The great response from the Bahamian public shows that there is a need and desire for more performing arts presentations.”

“Performing Spaces,” Ms Butler said, is already planning for its second summer camp and is currently exploring the possibility of training more children and teens in the arts.

ESPA brings holistic therapy to the Bahamas

A

fter successfully establishing a presence in 55 countries around the world, the holistic ESPA spa brand has now come the Bahamas.

The first flagship ESPA in the Caribbean is located at Baha Mar and follows the brand’s location-inspired philosophy by striving to bring resorts guests an authentically Bahamian spa experience.

As you approach the spa’s entrance along a path, you encounter its mantra that reads: “Sometimes you just need to breathe, trust, let and see what happens.”

The staff at the ESPA spa encourage their local and international guests to “pause for a quick break or sit back, relax and spend the day in total comfort designed around you.”

With 24 luxurious private rooms, the spa offers services ranging from massages and facials to mani-pedis and complete body treatments for women, men and teens.

When I recently visited the facility, I got the chance to “breathe, trust and let go” in the hands of ESPA therapist Desra Mason with her popular aromatherapy.

An aromatherapy session includes a relaxing massage using a blend of

individually chosen oils that serve as detoxifiers, de-stressors, muscle relaxers, immune system boosters, energisers, and even help with jet lag recovery.

“What we do first is a sensory test, and based on your sensory test and sense of smell you would then choose which one of the oils you would like to be massaged with. Each has a healing property, so once you inhale that scent, it is based on what your body actually needs,” Desra explained.

When asked to pick an oil, my senses picked up on a detoxifying oil in the scent of cypress and grapefruit. Desra suggested that my body recognised a need for greater water intake.

There are many well-documented health benefits of massages and spa treatments. And Desra said massages specifically are great for improving blood circulation – “Massages get the body pumping and going.”

She informed me that I had some tension that needed to be worked out by penetrating the soft muscle tissue.

She incorporated hot stones in my session which she said are also good for circulation.

“Sometimes people want a deep tissue massage but the pain that comes

after is not a good feeling. So it is all based on your comfort level: we go light, medium and firm,” said Desra.

She advises that people with certain chronic diseases, specifically heart diseases or epilepsy, should check with their medical professionals before considering a massage experience.

“If you have highly blood pressure you won’t be able to get a hot stone massage. So we make sure we find out everything with the questions we ask at the beginning consultation. It is also in order to customise your experience, make sure there are no medical conditions to harm you,” she said.

Desra said listening to a customer’s needs is key in her field.

“Once you tell me what it is you want to receive I should be able to tune into that and become in sync with you in order to give you that proper experience. We do a lot of energy work, which means from the moment I greet you and shake your hand, we start to transfer. Sometimes people may not connect, but luckily for us our energies connected so you were able to have a really good massage. I love what I do, I love meeting new people and hearing about new experiences during my 15 years in the field,” she said,

Miss Plus Bahamas celebrates diversity in women

T

wo years after its launch, the Miss Plus Beauty Bahamas International pageant is still defending itself against accusations that it’s just a “fat show” promoting unhealthy lifestyles.

Pageant Director Rochelle WalkerThompson said she has heard her fair share of criticism and ridicule from naysayers who don’t believe a pageant like the one she is running should exist.

“I am quick to let people know that his pageant was created to celebrate the diversity among women. We are not promoting unhealthy lifestyles, but what we are saying is that women who have diverse body types do have something to offer. And we want to show people that the same stage that holds a size 2 woman can also hold a size 20,” she told Tribune Weekend.

The pageant is currently making a call for a new slate of competitors. Its last pageant season wrapped up a few weeks ago with its new queen, O’neisha Adderley, making it into the top five finalists in the International Miss World Plus beauty pageant held last month in Atlanta, Georgia. O’neisha also received the award for the Best National Costume.

“There was so much working against us as we were making our way to Atlanta. But I am so proud of what O’neisha was able to accomplish. She did an excellent job and represented the country well,” said Mrs WalkerThompson.

Now, the pageant director is turning her attention towards grooming all of the new contestants seeking to make their mark, using Miss Plus Beauty as their avenue.

“This year we have moved the pageant to September 30, so it will be a very vigorous five-week programme for those who we will be picking from

the applications submitted. Our call to action ends on August 25,” she said.

Even before its official call for new contestants went out, Mrs WalkerThompson said there were several inquires as it relates to the pageant’s new cycle.

“We have gotten quite a bit of people expressing interest prior to sending our queen off to the international pageant in Georgia. We have had about 11 ladies who approached us before. And there have been a lot of women who have submitted applications,” she said.

“But what we want to be known is it that we don’t take anyone who enters just to make up the numbers. We hand-pick the best eight to 10 competitors who we believe are ready to compete.

A lot of the times, I believe we do a disservice to the ladies who we allow to compete when they are not ready just yet. But I believe in only choosing those who are ready so the everyone can begin on equal footing.”

One of the most important things about the Miss Plus Beauty pageant, she said, is that once a contestant makes it through the programme, they never leave emptyhanded, even if they don’t take home a title or advance to the international stage.

“The contestants learn about public

speaking, personal development, finances and much more. So even if you didn’t walk away with a crown, you walk away with something tangible,” said Mrs Walker-Thompson.

Both the winner and the first runner-up of the local pageant have the opportunity to compete on the international level.

“This year our focus in on mental health, so we have adopted Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre as our charity of choice. Our queen will spend some time engaging in community service efforts

that the centre,” said Mrs WalkerThompson.

Miss Plus Beauty Bahamas has now released its criteria for the 2018 contestants, and they include for women to be a dress size 14 and over. The event is open to women aged 21 to 40.

The prize package for the winner will include participating at the international pageants, a full wardrobe for the international competition/s and more.

Shark thriller ‘The Meg’ goes deep, stays shallow THE MEG RUNNING TIME: 113 MINS

e’re going to need a bigger boat for all these shark movies.

On the tail of “The Shallows,” ‘‘47 Metres Down,” ‘‘Dark Tide” and, of course, the seminal “Sharknado,” comes “The Meg,” the latest in a growing school of shark movies, all of which, to varying degrees, use our fond memories of “Jaws” as bait to reel us back in the water again.

The hook on this one? Bigger shark.

To my disappointment, the title of “The Meg” does not refer to Meg Ryan. No, the titular Meg of Jon Turteltaub’s thriller is the Megalodon, which sounds like either a “Transformers” character or a heavy metal band.

It is, in fact, a prehistoric underwater dinosaur, a kind of supersized shark that went extinct more than two million years ago. According to scientists, they could grow up to 60 feet long.

According to Hollywood producers, it’s more like 75 feet or more. In “The Meg,” a Megalodon’s dorsal fin sticking out from the water looks from afar like a catamaran.

Naturally, history could not keep such a predator so perfect for today’s movies all to itself, especially when one could be strategically found somewhere in the Pacific, conveniently close to the world’s second largest movie market, China. Based on Steve Alten’s “Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror,” ‘‘The Meg” has been in development for some two decades, only to finally emerge as American-Chinese hybrid production.

A state-of-the-art underwater research facility, bankrolled by a cocky young billionaire (Rainn Wilson), uncovers a deeper realm of the Mariana Trench that has for centuries been separated from the rest of the ocean by a cloudy, cold membrane. Soon after a research expedition pushes through the layer in a submersible, they are attacked by an unseen creature, cutting them off from the base above.

For the rescue mission, 11,000 metres down, the team reluctantly turns to the only expert at such a deep dive: Jonas Taylor (Statham). The chief researcher, Dr Minway Zhang (Winston Chao), elects to quickly bring Taylor out of retirement (he’s living

above a bar in Thailand) against the warnings of Dr Heller (Robert Taylor), who believes Taylor reckless for an earlier deep-water nuclear submarine rescue where as many died as lived.

Statham, the sleek, gravelly voiced action star, is lured back underwater because one of the three people trapped — Lori (Jessica McNamee) — happens to be his ex-wife.

With remarkably little trouble, he goes from boozing in Thailand to easily piloting a vessel straight down to the seafloor. Statham, sometimes a one-man show, here has a fairly large ensemble around him, one assembled to appeal to moviegoers both East and West.

Chinese actress Li Bingbing stars as the divorced single-mother daughter of Dr Zhang, and Taylor’s love interest. Also in the mix as crew members are Ruby Rose (”Orange is the New Black”) and Page Kennedy.

But the main draw in “The Meg” is obviously the giant shark which, after years stuck at the bottom of the sea, is awfully hungry. There are the expected close scrapes, surprisingly good production design, PG-13 rated chompings and fluctuating levels of even giant-shark-movie plausibility.

What is it about sharks that inspires such absurdity in plots? Much of “The Meg” aims for a familiar popcorn mix of frights and ridiculousness that may well do the trick for cheap August thrills, or those who pine for, say, “Deep Blue Sea.” “The Meg” is best when it acknowledges its derivativeness, just one more silly shark movie in an ocean full of them. Its finest moment is when Statham, having willingly jumped into the water near the Megalodon, channels Dory and murmurs to himself: “Just keep swimming.”

BlacKkKlansman Running time: 135mins

I

n 1979, a man named Ron Stallworth who was the first African-American police officer and detective in the Colorado Springs Police Department also became a card-carrying member of the Ku Klux Klan and the leader of the local chapter. He would send a white co-worker to play him for in-person meetings as part of the wild undercover operation, but Stallworth was the one on the phone, insisting his hatred for non-white races with everyone from the local chapter members to the KKK’s “grand wizard” David Duke himself.

It’s Stallworth’s story that provides the framework for Spike Lee’s blistering new film, “BlacKkKlansman ,” but hardly the full picture. Deceptively epic in scope, in “BlacKkKlansman” Lee has made an immensely entertaining film about everything — love, friendship, ambition, civil rights, the power of words and images to uplift and destroy and the various shades and ideologies of racism and revolution that will leave you craving another viewing.

John David Washington (Denzel Washington’s son) plays Ron Stallworth, a composed and deliberate man who isn’t afraid to ask for what he wants, whether it’s a job or a quick promotion out of the dreaded records room and into undercover work.

Many around him are quick to throw labels and make assumptions about what he can and can’t do. His co-worker calls him a toad, because of his race. His black student union girlfriend, Patrice, asks if he’s a pig (i.e. a cop). At work, he seems extreme — a rookie suggesting a dangerous undercover operation to infiltrate the KKK. In life, he seems compliant. As Patrice (a brilliant Laura Harrier) tells him, meaningful change is impossible when working within the structures of a racist system.

But Ron has a plan to infiltrate The Organisation, and a few around him like the police chief (Robert John Burke), and two detectives, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver) and Jimmy Creek (Michael Buscemi) are at least willing

to go along with it for a while. Flip draws the card to be in-person Ron, which turns out to be a headache of its own when one of The Organisation’s members, Felix (Jasper Paakkonen), starts to suspect that he might actually be Jewish.

These scenes are riveting to watch, infused with a perfectly executed tension as Flip carefully navigates his way through meetings and interactions with the group, including the docile chapter leader Walter (Ryan Eggold), the maniacally sinister Felix and the perpetually drunk and dumb Ivanhoe (Paul Walter Hauser). They are, on the whole, dopes used for comedic effect, but there is something else going on below the surface. You’re always keenly aware that these shadowy, back bar racists could with the right leader become the mainstream.

The acting is expert throughout with standout performances by Washington and Driver, especially, who gets a powerful arc. The supporting cast is also notably strong, including Harrier and Topher Grace as David Duke, who is attempting to take The Organisation into the mainstream with a gentlemanly

demeanour, polished suits and a politician’s smile.

Mind you, “BlacKkKlansman” is not a subtle film and is often repetitive where it least needs it. Stallworth’s “white voice” and racist musings over the phone are perfectly used a few times, until the effect eventually begins to dull.

But it is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years, from composer Terence Blanchard. Every frame is packed with meaning and metaphor from the opening, the famous crane shot from Victor Fleming’s “Gone With the Wind,” onward to the sins of the present day. It’s a Spike Lee joint that is not to be missed.

Karin says: “It’s really difficult to find an evening gown that really works with that many tattoos. And I’m not sure this is it. The colour doesn’t quite work on her. And ultimately it just looks like a some yellow pieces of scrap material sewn together.

Cara says: “I like that it is not something that we have seen time and time again. The colour is refreshing and summery.

I have to admit, I found her tattoos extremely distracting at first and I think that some earrings would have helped to jazz it up at bit.”

Karin says: “I can’t see anything beyond that heavy blue eyeshadow. The concept of this outfit is an interesting one – maybe an Aladdin style track suit? But the material looks so cheap and nylon-y that it kinda ruins the ensemble. “ Cara says: “I get that she is young and experimenting with style and this is definitely a youthful outfit. Have to say that I don’t care for it. It’s lounge wear and I just don’t think it’s evening out, movie premiere attire. It’s OK for hanging out at home with the girls, but it looks sloppy to me. And I am not feeling the blue shadow.”

Karin says: Karin says: “First of all, that hairstyle does not flatter her at all. It makes her look tired and all droopy.

However, the colour of the dress is awesome on her and the cut is interesting, even though the gown looks like it’s barely holding on. That doublesided tape must be working overtime.”

Cara says: “This red is fabulous on her. The dress itself is a bit loose at the top and I feel that it could use something more, not sure what, but it needs some bling somewhere.”

Karin says: “OMG I hate it!

The top part looks dated and almost a bit matronly, while the bottom half looks like she tied a very short towel around her waist. Hideous!”

Cara says: “This is another of those asymmetrical cut-out outfits. This one is cool, literally and figuratively. I am here for this combo, the baby pink colour with the subtle black beading at the shoulders paired with those cute sandals. A winner!”

Karin says: “I see Nina thought she was going for a Dalmatian theme in keeping with her movie’s topic. Sadly, she ended up looking like someone in sad, half-hearted cow costume for Halloween.”

Cara says: “So I definitely got the cow rather than Dalmatian vibe as well. And I just don’t understand this entire look. It’s just weird. Is it actually a cow print or just really big polka dots? And there is so much fabric she is drowning in it. It’s not at all cute.”

‘Tailspin’ is an intriguing, puzzling thriller

There are some nasty people with powerful connections who want the contents for their own purposes, even if it means killing Mallett and O’Neal.

Brown knows how to craft roguish but loveable men with strong and likable independent women, and “Tailspin” is no exception. The mystery of the contents of the box provides an intriguing and puzzling thriller, and the final reveal makes the reader adore the main characters even more. Fans of Sandra Brown will enjoy this one, and those who admire thrillers with a dose of romance and sex should jump headfirst into this book.

n “Tailspin” by Sandra Brown, Rye Mallett has a talent for flying planes, and his piloting skills have gotten him out of many jams. One night during a particularly nasty storm that has shut down the Atlanta airport, he’s asked to deliver a black box to a Dr Lambert, since the material inside is time sensitive. When he’s about to land, a sabotage attempt forces him to crash land. He survives with hardly a scratch, but his luck changes when a woman shows up claiming to represent Lambert and wanting the black box.

Dr Brynn O’Neal refuses to say what’s in the box, but assures him it’s critical that it reach its destination on time. Mallett doesn’t know if he can trust her, but with the act of bringing down his plane and trying to kill him

Solid twists keep plot churning in ‘Prisoner in the Castle’

O

ne pleasure of a mystery series is connecting with a character that changes and grows with each novel. Maggie Hope, the heroine of Susan Elia MacNeal’s World War II novels, is a different woman in this eighth outing, “The Prisoner in the Castle,” than she was in the 2012 Edgar-nominated debut, “Mr Churchill’s Secretary.”

Starting as a typist for Winston Churchill, Maggie has become a fullfledged spy, working for the Special Operations Executive (SOE), the hush-hush organization created by Churchill to “set Europe ablaze.” But at the end of 1942, the spy business turns against special agent Maggie when she is sent to a former Victorian hunting lodge on the tiny, remote Isle of Scarra, nicknamed the Forbidden Island, located hundreds of miles from the mainland of Scotland.

The place is supposed to be a secret British training center but is really a prison for top agents whose supervisors worry they could leak vital information or have weaknesses that could be exploited by the enemy.

They can’t leave — or communicate with the outside world — and none of their friends or family knows where they are. But the 10 agents hardly

feel like they are in jail as they roam the grounds freely and are served excellent meals by the three servants who live at the lodge.

But then the agents — all of whom have been trained to kill — are being murdered, and it is obvious that one of them is putting to practice his — or her — background.

The plot’s parallels to Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None” are obvious — there are even several references to that 1939 novel. MacNeal honors that classic mystery, but does not make “The Prisoner in the Castle” a copycat novel.

As in her other novels, MacNeal puts a fictional spin on real WWII events.

“The Prisoner in the Castle” is based on a similar facility for at-risk SOE agents.

Maggie’s intelligence and loyalty to the war effort continues to evolve in MacNeal’s series. Maggie’s confinement at the island is complicated because her testimony is vital at a serial killer’s upcoming trial in London. Without her, the killer may go free.

Solid twists keep the plot of “The Prisoner in the Castle” churning until the surprise finale.

Stories of betrayal and triumph First-time author reveals the cheating ways of men

ith her first two books, new author Alana Lloyd wants to do two seemingly very different things: she wants uplift those struggling with hardship, and she wants to give women insight into cheating men and their tricks.

But in actuality, she said, both books seek to teach people how to utilise painful experiences for the betterment of self.

After having lived through poverty and domestic violence, and come out on the other side triumphant, Alana decided that she wanted to share her story with others, to inspire them.

With her first book, “Finding Nina”, she hopes to encourage her readers to remember that despair and victory often go hand in hand, and to help them find the strength to live the life they desire.

The story, which is inspired by real life events, follows the protagonist, Nina, through many lows, including rape, domestic abuse, betrayal and death. Readers are taken on an unexpected journey which shows how Nina develops the coping mechanisms she needs to overcome life’s challenges and find herself in the end.

A certified legal assistant and former CARICOM Youth Ambassador, Alana started following her dream of becoming a published author more than a decade ago. She began writing “Finding Nina” in 2008, but personal challenges kept from completing it until this year.

“After a devastating break-up that left me with post-traumatic stress disorder, I put it (the story) down, and not until I arrived at the point of transition and change did I pick it up again and complete the book in three months. Having it completed was a tremendous feeling of accomplishment and actually quite humbling. It is reality that our lives can bring so much more value to the world around us, beyond the difficulties we face,” Alana

Now that “Finding Nina” is finished, Alana is turning her attention towards her second book, the more lighthearted “Sis, This Your Man”, which is scheduled for release in Fall.

The book was inspired by the Facebook group called “Sis, is this your man?”, a kind of crowd-sourcing effort to determine if your partner is cheating on you. The group was temporarily shut down last year due to legal issues, but is now back online. At its height, it boasted some 50,000 members. Women would upload photos of their men in an attempt to see if any of the other members recognised them – an attempt to catch the cheaters first-hand. Women

ended up recognising several of their boyfriends and husbands, and asked for further information, which then led to screenshots and videos of said men being posted, exposing them to the world.

The concept has since been duplicated by many others and become a meme.

In Alana’s version, which takes on the form of a book, she documents what the unfaithful men she talked to had to say about their affairs.

“It is a one-up for the woman who wants insight and a play ahead of where her cheating partner is,” said the writer.

A follow-up and companion piece, “Bro, This Your Gal: What Your Cheating Woman Hopes You Never Find Out”, is also planned.

With both books, Alana hopes she can deliver a message of encouragement; to tell her readers that while they may be experiencing turmoil and pain, they should always be determined to find their strength.

The books are quite realistic and they present truth, tragedy, and triumph.

Back to basics When starting a project or facing a problem it is often helpful to reduce components to fundamentals and work from there, says Jack Hardy

I

f the project is gardening then I would suggest the fundamentals are soil, sun, seeds and water.

The Bahamas is a young country and its soil is still developing. In a few million years it will be just fine if it manages to stay above sea level. At the moment just about every area used for a garden could benefit from amendment.

The addition of peat moss allows sandy soil to retain moisture and clay soil to

become friable. The further addition of compost promotes healthy bacterial activity in the soil.

If you grow vegetables and ornamentals in containers you should always fill them with top quality potting mix, or make your own from peat moss, perlite or vermiculite, and compost. Both perlite and vermiculite are like volcanic popcorn and help to aerate soil and regulate moisture content. Vermiculite helps to retain more moisture than perlite which is good for some plants and bad for others. Always include perlite in your potting mix and add vermiculite for moisture loving plants.

Our soil needs nutriments and these can be supplied by the use of a good 6-6-6 granular fertilizer. Spread fertilizer evenly over the garden area and then work it into the soil using a trowel. Do this two or three weeks before transplanting seedlings or planting seeds and water daily when it does not rain.

Plants that are grown in containers are best fertilized using time-release products such as Osmocote. Once applied, the fertilizer works for two or three months. There is very little in the way of salt residue that can be a problem

with granular fertilizers and will in time poison the soil. Liquid fertilizers such as Miracle-Gro can be sprayed on containerised and open garden plants but is relatively expensive.

The sun is a gardener’s friend though it does not seem that way during our summer months. The basic molecular structure of plants is created through photosynthesis using sunlight and thereafter augmented by soluble nutrients taken in through the root system. Most vegetables need full sun for optimum development and if you grow your veggies in rows they should run north to south for best exposure to sunlight.

The Earth wobbles and this wobble creates the seasons. It also causes shorter days in winter and longer days in summer. Most vegetables are best grown in winter and spring. Some – like onions – will only develop properly when the days are lengthening so their main growing period is after the winter solstice. The flowering of poinsettias and some other plants is brought on by shortening days.

For everything there is a season and responsive gardeners are able to use their experiences and observations to maximise their returns.

Now the fun part – seeds. Few shopping experiences are as exciting as rummaging through racks or carousels of packages seeds. Displays are usually divided into vegetables, herbs, and flowers. The low relative price of seeds makes compulsive selections almost inevitable.

Seeds are of two types: those that

produce hybrid plants and those that produce open-pollinated plants. Hybrid seeds are always labeled as such and are shortcuts on the process of evolution.

They have been selected to produce particular qualities in the plant such as size of fruit or leaf, colour, early ripening, taste, and longevity of harvest. Hybrid seeds are therefore a little more expensive. If a seed package is not labeled hybrid then the contents are open-pollinated. If you collect and dry seeds from open-pollinated plants they can be used to grow next season’s crops. Do not be tempted to dry seeds in direct sunlight as exposure to sun can have a sterilising effect.

Store your seed packages in a container that you keep in a refrigerator. Heat tends to make seeds lose viability quickly. Some seeds lose their potency quicker than others. Pepper seeds, for instance, usually do not germinate after a year in storage while tomato seeds can be viable after three or four years.

I have fun telling neophyte gardeners the only information on a packet of seeds for use in The Bahamas is depth of planting, and even that is not usually critical. Plants can be grown much closer together than recommended as long as you adjust your fertilizer and watering schedules to match. Pepper plants, for instance, can be grown two to a hole. If you have a skiff that runs at 30 knots with one engine, two engines will not give you 60 knots. The obverse of this is that a double plant does not need twice the fertilizer and water of a single plant but does need a little extra.

When watering, err on the side of excess. Establish a watering schedule that fits the needs of your plants and stick to it. The bare minimum would be a good soaking of garden plots using a sprinkler twice a week. Potted plants are serviced by a hose-end sprayer and need watering at least three times a week.

Our vegetable growing season corresponds with the dry time of year so watering is very important. If a heavy shower of rain comes along it would probably allow you to postpone the next watering of your open gardens for a day or two but you will still have to water plants in pots.

Sowing seeds and raising plants is a commitment, a commitment that keeps us in touch with the fundamentals of life and the rhythms of both our immediate environment and the Universe. The former we can adjust; the latter we must observe.

year after Will and Daniel Payne lost their mom, and nearly two decades since their father’s death, it was time to follow their wishes for the afterlife.

As they board a boat with three generations of family, the brothers slip into flippers and de-fog their masks.

Will, who became a certified scuba diver just days earlier, checks his oxygen tank and jumps into the azure waters to secure a concrete marker mixed with their ashes at a memorial reef about

three miles out to sea.

This unusual resting place is exactly what the Paynes say their parents wanted. Buel Payne, a former Coast Guard member, and Linda Payne, who grew up on the water and loved boating, will spend their afterlife in a memorial modelled after the lost city of Atlantis, among impressive lion statues and ornate gates and pillars that encrusted with sea life.

It took nearly four years for multiple government agencies to sign off on this underwater mausoleum, which is designed to encourage a healthy ecosystem. Roughly a decade later, the Neptune Memorial Reef is home to the cremated remains of 1,500 people, and

any snorkeler or scuba diver can visit.

The Paynes are the first to be memorialised in the reef’s expansion, which opened this summer and will make room for an additional 4,000 memorials over 16 acres, about 40 feet deep. Placements start around $1,500 and can go up to $8,000, with the priciest placements for specialised shapes like sea turtles and stingrays or for prominent spots throughout the city like the lions.

With reefs struggling worldwide against coral bleaching and other threats, the memorial’s builders are providing coral a head start. The concrete structures offer a high pH level, enabling sea creatures to flourish.

“We’re seeing animals here that we haven’t seen before. Ones that have been missing for a long time,” says Jim Hutslar, the reef’s operations director and one of the founders. “We actually found a long spine sea urchin that was considered extinct in the Caribbean Sea.” Sara Thanner, an environmental supervisor for the Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources, says an April survey showed the reef supports more than 65 different fish, shrimp and lobster and 75 other species including sponges, soft corals, and hard corals.

For people making end-of-life plans, the reef means being part of something living. Hutslar is hoping that decades from now, the memorial will have grown into a massive coral reef where individual markers will no longer be distinguishable, and “family members will just know their loved ones are part of it.”

“We’re creating life after life,” he said.

While Hutslar, Will and another diver descended to the ocean floor, Daniel and his wife and three children snorkelled on the surface, gazing down through the strong clear currents. They spotted a parrot fish, barracuda and a monster snook. Abundant schools of small, colourful fish darted in and out of the sculptures.

They had picked out a small bronze headstone reading “Together at Last” to mark the ashes, adding their thumbprints on a decorative concrete sea shell. The divers picked a spot amid the underwater city’s striking columns and statues.

“It’s just amazing. It’s so peaceful,” Will, 48, of Sachse, Texas, said after surfacing. “If there is a heaven, that would be it for them.”

ustin T Levy was a truly progressive reformer, with his advanced concepts in business and philanthropic contributions. In 1936, when he became interested in the Bahamas, the humane Levy noted the islanders’ lack of available dairy products. He promptly established the Hatchet Bay Plantation, a model dairy farm, with imported Jersey, Hereford and Guernsey cows and bulls, plus some Rhode Island red hens.

By August 26, 1938, when this appeared in the local press, Levy’s development of his Hatchet Bay Plantation was changing the face of Eleuthera and Captain Charlie Collar, of Bahamas Airways, flew in three plane-loads of guests to celebrate the launching of Levy’s 126-foot yacht Arawak, built at Hatchet Bay by Victor Cleare.

The list of VIPs was headed by the Governor, Sir Charles Dundas with his ADC, Sir Francis Peek.

Imperial Lighthouse Service, was there, as were Mrs J H Jarrett (wife of the Colonial Secretary) and many of the socially-elite, including Mrs C P Bethel, Basil Burnside, the Hon and Mrs O H Curry, with their daughter Patricia, Donald Graham with his two sons, John and Peter, Miss Sylvia Johnson, Bert Kelly, Newell Kelly with his son, Gale, W H H Maura, John McCarthy, H C McLean, Mrs Jas P Sands, Mr and Mrs Stafford Sands, and Cyril Solomon.

In addition to the distinguished visitors from Nassau, residents from Harbour Island poured in, many of them having walked many miles during the night. One man, when picked up by a truck some miles away from Hatchet Bay, had already walked 40 miles, and was quite prepared to walk the rest of the way.

The band from Gregory Town showed such enthusiasm that they arrived at 5.30am, instead of 10 o’clock, and played throughout the day.

The wonderful world of dogs

W

hat I look at my band of dogs, all five of them, watching my every move, I find myself wondering who actually owns whom.

When I think the way we interact, what we accept from each other, it is very apparent that the human in a proper pet/ human relationship gives a lot more materialistically.

This morning I was having my daily waffle for breakfast – circumstances having changed a bit because of my husband’s recent heart surgery we were having breakfast downstairs at the kitchen table. Yes, ladies, normally I am one of the lucky few who has a husband who brings them breakfast in bed (for the past 38 years), but because of the recent surgery he cannot, at present, carry a try upstairs. All of this is to set the stage, not to make the wives reading this fell envious!

So my senior potcake, Chiefie, is asleep on the kitchen floor (chasing crabs on a beach somewhere, his paws moving like the wind). I mention to my husband how every morning Chief sits on the bed with me to share my waffle. Here we are in the kitchen, he is dreaming up a storm and for once I will be allowed to eat all my waffle myself... or not! No sooner than those words were out of my mouth that the King, nose extended in my direction, woke up and sniffing the air came up to me and demanded his share of my waffle. I got to thinking, would I share that waffle so willingly if a human member of the family demanded it so righteously? Probably not, I would tell them that they had already had their breakfast, in Chief’s case a milk bone, and I was

Big-hearted Bernard

By The Bahamas Humane Society THE Bahamas Humane Society is Nassau’s oldest charity, founded in 1924. Along with being a veterinary clinic, it is also an animal shelter and adoption centre, so lost and found dogs often find their way to the BHS, usually with the help of someone who has found them in the street. This is what happened to Bernard, known at the BHS as ‘Found Bernard Road’.

This sociable, friendly fellow was found wandering along Bernard Road one day several months ago.

He waited patiently at the BHS for his owner to appear but when this did not happen, he was put up for adoption. Bernard is about a year and a half old. He’s friendly with other dogs but does not care for cats. He’d make a great yard dog and could probably be trained to be in and out of the house. Bernard can stay at the BHS as long as need be since it is a no-kill shelter, but he’d really prefer a home of his own. Do you have the right spot for Bernard? If so, come to the BHS to meet him or call 323-5138 having mine, but the King gets what he demands, with a pat at the head and a smile. I think it’s cute!

It reminds me of the cartoon of the two dogs walking with their owner who is carrying a bag after cleaning up behind them.

One dog says to the other one, “Ha! And they think they are in charge, look who is carrying the bag?” Funny, but kind of to the point.

The is another cartoon when the wife comes home, calls out, “Honey, I’m home!” and then you see her snuggling and hugging her dog!!

Today in the pool playing with Buddy he kept putting his pool toy down and losing it, so I would have to get out of the pool and look for it.

When I found it he was jubilant.

If Buddy had been a human kid I would have said, “You put it down somewhere, you go and look for it,” and continued swimming. What exactly is it that makes us so gooey and goofy over our fur babies? What

My personal feeling is that our dogs are unconditionally there for us.

Their love, adoration and friendship never falters, even on those days where they are simply too busy to come when we call them, or refuse to sit when asked. Today in the pool after I had got out for what felt like the hundredth time, Buddy swam over and landed a big wet kiss on my forehead. I swooned.

Dogs are really smart, especially if in an environment that encourages them to think and function in a human forum. In a recent Canadian study animal psychologists reported that dogs can understand about 250 words and gestures. They know how to count and distinguish objects. This comes as no surprise to me. I always talk to my dogs and tell them stuff and I am sure they understand, but the owner has to be responsive to them, and has to believe that their dog can understand. I frequently say ‘please’ to my dogs and ‘thank you,’

These evaluation tests on the canine population have shown that they understand way beyond our previous assumptions and are far smarter than people frequently give them credit for.

Dogs have the entire gambit of emotions, just as we do: fear, happiness, sadness, loneliness, boredom, apprehension, loyalty, and that allimportant one, love, and the need to be loved in return.

I enjoy my band of happy tails who rule my life and get cuddles and cared for, but it does make me feel very sad for all those poor ones who do not have loving homes they can dictate to, the dogs that only know and experience the negative emotions because they have no home and no love.

Right now the shelter has lots of lovely adult dogs who would do anything for a loving home, a human to love and protect. Now is a wonderful time to adopt.
