OUNT Tabor Church will be hosting an interactive virtual Summer Academy for students between the ages of five and 12 years old during the period of the national lockdown. According to the church’s senior pastor, Bishop Neil C Ellis: “The exponential increase in new COVID-19 cases, coupled with other mitigating factors attributed to this global pandemic and its associated lockdowns, have resulted in adverse social and psychological impacts that continue to manifest itself daily in both adults and children”. Bishop Ellis said in Mount Tabor’s view this is an opportune time for the Body of Christ to live out its biblical mandate to go out into the world and let its light shine bright. “It is my belief that every crisis presents an opportunity for us to put legs to our faith and demonstrate that the true church is indeed agents of hope. Our world needs hope and healing...I believe that this moment of global darkness presents one of the brightest

opportunities for the light of the Church to be seen,” he said. The virtual summer camp, set to launch the week of Monday, August 10, will be held under the theme “Mount Tabor Church – One Church around the world, anytime. Anywhere.”
It will take place across all of the church’s social media platforms and is designed to engage participants in various educational activities. The 45-minute videos will be available daily on the @Mount Tabor Church and @Bishop Neil C Ellis Facebook pages. Programme coordinator Dr Kenneth Romer said a team of education curriculum experts have put together “a robust and exciting programme that focuses on instructional videos designed to inspire and
motivate participants around key life values, engage them around arts, entertainment and crafts and will also take them on daily mental journeys around the world through storytelling, read by renowned and distinguished Bahamian national role models.” “All of this can be achieved when participants simply log onto the various virtual media platforms from within the safety and comforts of their own homes,” he said. New videos will be posted daily at 9am and

Thousands of children look forward to participating in annual summer camps designed to keep them engaged, focused and socially connected. However, due to this global pandemic and its many social and financial implications, our nation has witnessed the unprecedented cancellation of scores of summer camps, including the camps traditionally sponsored by the government of the Bahamas and its many social partners,” said Bishop Ellis. “The welfare of our children during these critical times remains a major concern and priority for us and therefore, we feel compelled to act.” Bishop Ellis said he would like to encourage parents to ensure that their children participate in the Summer Academy. He also appealed to Bahamians to continue to join him in “praying that our all wise and omnipotent God would give our Prime Minister and the leaders of our country, wisdom beyond their understanding and the courage to make decisions that would honour Him and at the same time make life better for our people.”

SILVER LININGS - PART I

Recognising silver linings has allowed me to bask in God’s overcoming power when all around and shifting. It is becoming me bleakness and harder and harder to see any dismay raised their light at the end of the proverbial tunnel and there is a ugly heads.
T
HERE is a very famous maxim, attributed to John Milton, that states: “Behind every dark cloud there is a silver lining.” Though I thought it a trite and mundane saying at first, the strength of this proverb, idiom, adage lies in its simple truth: No matter how unbearably painful a situation, there is always some healing, some lesson, some beauty that lies just beyond the difficult circumstance. I have had to make some truly painful decisions in my time – those that caused fear, questions, insecurity and much doubt. But no matter how dismal, the experience always turned out to have some positive attribute that caused me to grow, progress and change for the better. Whenever I share this lesson or teaching at a seminar, or in conversation, I always think about one of my very first “silver” linings. Believe it or not, it was an actual woman named Silver. Silver will probably never grace the front page of a newspaper, her face will never be on a dollar bill, but she proved to me that in the darkest seasons of life, God always provides ways of escape, respite and restoration. I remember our very first face-to-face meeting. She burst into the office, a ball
of positive, confident energy (with her chrome manicure) and I could not help but be drawn to her. Oh, to be certain, from the start she and I were complete opposites, but the connection was immediate and real – she remains my sister to this day. Every time I think of her, I smile – our conversations groomed more confidence in me, I became excited in perhaps the lowest point of my life to bravely begin again. I don’t think I ever said it before, but for her friendship – I am eternally grateful. She became my own personal silver lining, and when I was misunderstood and even shunned by others, she welcomed this nerdy lady, who didn’t really fit anywhere, with an open heart and open arms. My friendship with her taught me several things: 1. Silver linings always accompany a hardship of some kind. 2. Silver linings are not always immediately visible. 3. Silver linings can be as personal as fingerprints. 4. Silver linings cause us to grow and change in ways we never expected. For this next series, I want to share about how silver linings can give us a better outlook, and viewpoint; how
recognising them builds us up and prepares us for a richer work, greater levels and a more impactful existence. Lately, with all that has been happening, finding anything positive or affirmative, is tenuous, at best. Without meaning to dredge up dismal memories, we have to admit that this has been quite a year. From Dorian to COVID to Isaias, the hits just seem to keep on coming. Right now, as a country, in our various communities and as individuals, our hold on optimism is precarious
feeling of foreboding permeating the atmosphere. Please let me assure you that this can be an amazing time of silver linings – if we take the time to recognise them. I am not speaking of what I have heard, but of what I have lived. Recognising silver linings has allowed me to bask in God’s overcoming power when all around me bleakness and dismay raised their ugly heads. Has 2020 been a one hundred percent party for me? Not in the least! I have lost people, possessions and so much more. But I am ever reminded of God’s powerful promise in John 16:33: “These things have I spoken unto you, that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world.” We’ve experienced storms in almost every form, and I know many share the sentiment of wanting this to just be over and done with. But silver linings remind us that there is still joy after the stretching and pressing, hope of victory after crushing defeat and certainly, there is life after the dying. God bless you this week!

Faith over fear BY CARLOS SPENCER OUR faith in God and the gospel of Jesus Christ is singularly the most important thing in the lives of believers in Christ. It is truly the salient point for those of us that are on a spiritual walk with God. As a direct consequence, we are not fearful in the normal sense as some might be. Our faith triumphs our fears because we are focused on God and understand and have experienced His omnipotence. 1 Peter 5:7 (KJV) tells us, “casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” The amazing Apostle Paul points out in 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” Believers possess inherent qualities and characteristics and fear is not among them. We embrace each challenging situation with the comforting knowledge that God is with us every step of the way. Fear is oppressed and our faith in the supernatural wonders of God is exalted. Isaiah 41:10 puts the matter of fear into context. It reads, “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with right hand of my righteousnes.” We know that our faith shall be rewarded because we trust the word of God as delineated in holy scripture. Psalm 91:1-2 reassures us that “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.” David experienced many difficult moments during his lifetime and often used the Psalms to express his anxiety, albeit complete reliance on God. His
faith was unshakeable and sacrosanct. David wrote in Psalm 56:34: “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.” Here David is clearly demonstrating his faith over fear. Faith and fear are polar opposites and cannot co-exist. If we are truly trusting in God, and we are firm in our conviction, it is unlikely or even conceivable that we might become fearful when we encounter the storms of life. Faith should reign supremely over fear and the dedicated believer is likely to smile at the storm because his trust is in the Heavenly Father. This is not to make trite of the situation but it manifests the nature of real faith in our Creator and our relationship with Him. Psalm 27:1 tells us: “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” A true believer in Christ is not a fearful slave but has the spirit of God within him/her. We are His children and call Him Father. Romans 8:15 says: “For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.” To reiterate, we should remember that as believers we should not be fearful. Our faith should always exceed our fears if we are truly walking with God. Amen. Thanks be to God for the sharing of His word.

What literature can tell us about people’s struggle with their faith during a pandemic By AGNES MUELLER Professor of German and Comparative Literature, University of South Carolina (THE CONVERSATION) - A recent Pew Research poll found that religious faith had deepened for a quarter of Americans because of the coronavirus pandemic. Some might indeed take solace in religion at a time of uncertainty, such as a pandemic, but the literary texts that I teach in my university course, “Pandemics in Literature,” suggest that this is not always the case: Faith may deepen for some, while others may reject or abandon it altogether. Christianity and the Black Death In one of the most well known works of pandemic literature, Giovanni Boccaccio’s “The Decameron” – sales of which have reportedly risen during the coronavirus – faith and religion are mocked and satirised. “The Decameron” is a set of one hundred stories told by seven young women and three young men quarantined from the Black Death on the outskirts of medieval Florence. Interestingly, “The Decameron” is the earliest and most significant text that shows a rejection of Christianity at a time when most of Europe was still under the powerful influence of the Catholic Church and its teachings. In Boccaccio’s massive collection of novellas, monks and other dignitaries of the Church are ridiculed, disparaged and shown in their human fallibility. For example, in the fourth story on the first day, an abbot and a monk conspire to bring a willing young girl into a monastery – an act that is celebrated by the narrators as brave and laudable, even though this went against every religious and moral doctrine of the time. This and other stories show that personal faith or the church and priests are never able to help humans in their vulnerability. Instead, it is earthly love or passion that become the driving forces of human behavior. Both the structure and the representatives of the Catholic Church as well as the possibility for individual, personal faith are rejected in Boccaccio’s collection.

On the face of it, Mann’s novella does not seem to engage with religion or faith. Yet, Aschenbach’s character is deeply rooted in the religious principles and values of a Protestant work ethic. For Mann, Aschenbach’s service to art and literature is like religion because of his dedication – he writes stoically every day, even when it’s difficult. When Aschenbach decides to travel to cholera-stricken Venice, he is seduced by the Polish boy Tadzio, who not only unleashes Aschenbach’s sudden homoerotic desire but also leads him to feast on cholera-infested strawberries that eventually kill him. Since Tadzio, the object of Aschenbach’s forbidden love, is always an object of adoration and never a subject, it is
easy to regard him as a personification of art. Aschenbach’s admiration of Tadzio is almost religious: Tadzio is depicted as an “angel” when he is seen to follow “the Summoner,” the angel of death, embodied by Tadzio: “It seemed to him the pale and lovely Summoner out there smiled at him and beckoned; (…) And, as so often before, he rose to follow.” In the face of cholera, religion, in “Death in Venice,” gets replaced with art as a spiritual experience; earthly love becomes a substitute for personal faith. 1918 flu and personal faith The title of Pulitzer Prize-winning American writer Katherine Anne Porter’s short story “Pale Horse, Pale Rider” of 1936 is clearly a reference to the Bible. The story borrows its title from Revelation 6:1-8, with the four horsemen of the Apocalypse as the Conqueror on a white horse, War on a red horse, Famine on a black horse and Death on a pale horse. There are almost no literary works dealing with the 1918 influenza pandemic,
except for Porter’s short story. A narrator tells the story of Miranda, a newspaper woman, and Adam, a soldier, and the suffering that both endure because of their influenza illnesses. Adam eventually succumbs, but Miranda only learns of his death later. Before Adam’s death, Miranda and Adam recall prayers and songs from their childhood faith. They both say that now “[i]t doesn’t sound right, somehow,” meaning their childhood songs and prayers are no longer valuable, and their attempt to take comfort in the bluegrass song “Pale Horse Pale Rider” in the face of Adam’s impending death fails, too. There is little scholarship on Porter’s interesting story, but English professor Jane Fisher aptly notes how Porter invokes new literary techniques and lessons learned from the Black Death in “Pale Horse, Pale Rider.” While personal faith is in this story under consideration as a source of solace and relief, it is ultimately rejected. Rethinking religion? Other literary works that engage with pandemics show a similar course, both in highbrow and more popular genres. Albert Camus’ “The Plague” of 1947 was celebrated as an existentialist classic, where faith and religion have no place and individual effort is impossible. In Stephen King’s 1978 tome “The Stand,” all characters surviving the apocalyptic and fictitious “super-influenza” appear apathetic, beyond religion. And Fermina Daza, the lover of the main protagonist in Gabriel García Márquez’s “Love in the Time of Cholera” grows to despise her religion. We do not yet fully know how the coronavirus will affect societies in either deepening ties to faith or disillusionment from religious institutions. A new ministry to help ‘broken’ women

ROM a place of pain and despair, Cedericka Ellis found the strength and the inspiration to start her own Christian ministry to reach out in particular to women who feel they are broken. Ms Ellis was feeling the effects of lockdown and isolation as she pondered the way forward for her life, when she said God inspired her to create her “Broken Treasures Ministries”. “The Holy spirit spoke and gave me the name Broken Treasures Ministries. Weeks later He began to download the instructions for the way forward. As He gave it, I wrote it down. He gave me the month of July for a launch date. I wrestled with this because I said in the midst of a pandemic, being laid off, and all I was going through emotionally, I wondered how I could pull this off, on top of that there was the rise of COVID-19 cases,” she told Tribune Religion. Nevertheless, she pushed ahead and said with guidance from the Holy Spirit and her strong support system, she decided on Saturday, July 25, as the launch date. However, it was not to be, because a day before she could officially introduce her ministry to the public, Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis announced an immediate weekend lockdown. Cedericka said she had to come up with a plan B, which led her to hosting a virtual launch event. She felt this was the route to take, as there is still no definite time frame as to when things will get back to normal. “This proved to be the best decision, as there were those who wanted to be in attendance (at the original launch event) that wouldn’t have been able to attend due to different reasons. This virtual launch reached a wider viewing audience, and at the end of the night I would learn why. The testimonies and inbox messages were overwhelming,” she said. Broken Treasures Ministries, Cedericka explained, will serve as a safe haven for women and young girls whose lives are being, or have been, impacted by trauma. She wants to help address issues like childhood trauma, relationships, abuse, and low self-esteem that result in brokenness. “It is the desire of Broken Treasures Ministries to see women, mothers, wives and those in leadership positions to transition from brokenness to wholeness through the word of God, accountability and transparency,” she said. “Women will be motivated to walk in their truth while discovering their worth and uniqueness with full acceptance that they are treasures on this earth. Women’s ministry is
nothing new to me, as it has always been a passion,” she said. “Six years ago I gave birth to another women’s ministry that was needed for that time and season of my life. I believe as women, particularly those of us in ministry, there are many that are living behind the mask; many that are afraid to walk in their truth or are simply not comfortable walking in their truth. I’ve always believed in living a life of transparency, being ‘real’ with my experiences, and being open to admitting my flaws. I refuse to live a life of fluff, as there’s no deliverance in pretence. I feel that many don’t have avenues or people they can trust to share personal experiences for fear of being judged or having their business all over the streets.” Since launching her new ministry, Cedericka said she’s received numerous messages from women willing to share their personal experiences of pain – in some instances these are experiences they haven’t even shared with their own family members. “I’ve been through a lot of different experiences from a child to adolescent, as a single mom, leader in ministry, as a wife, and overall just being a woman in general. My experiences make me relatable to what so many of us face. I’ve been broken more times than I can count: Daddy issues, toxic relationships, being misunderstood, character assassination, suicidal thoughts, mind battles, depression, not knowing my worth, rejection, verbal and emotional abuse, and the list goes on, but I never allowed those things to defy me in fact they brought out purpose. We as women go through so much,” she said. “I never understood it then, why my journey always felt so hard and different. But I understand my experiences weren’t for me; they were for the women that I would have to help along the way. I’ve used Facebook as an avenue to reach many through transparency, and it’s through this medium I’ve met so many women that of late have reached out to me for mentorship, for advice with different situations, to pray with them, or simply just to lend a listening ear. After all, I’ve gained so much experience throughout the years and in the midst of these trying times many are trying to cope with their personal issues on top of COVID-19.” In addition to her ministry, Cedericka hosts her “Transparent Talk” every Tuesday via Zoom at 7pm. She said this venture was a precursor to launching the Broken Treasures Ministry. “More virtual sessions are coming and definitely a plan to do an outreach initiative where I can give back in a tangible way. Overall, I’m open to whatever the Lord permits going forward,” she said.
