Karin says: “Yes, she a 90s star who has now reached the ‘mature’ age of 55, but that is no excuse for this ‘auntie’ looking dress. The square silhouette created by the structured sleeves make her look extra broad and neck-less. The embellishments are also way too much (as is the bronzer on her face).”

Karin says: “I actually love this.

A Space Age avian aesthetic. It’s very sleek and very different; an interesting structure as well. The plunging neckline and the cut-outs of the blazer are sexy but tasteful, and I love how it’s paired it with the full-length beaded skirt that looks like feathers. The hair and makeup complete the look.”

Karin says: “First of all, I’m so over these see-through lace gowns, Valentino or not. Second of all, something about this shade of green just does not suit her. And then there is the feathery waistband which just adds a touch of the ridiculous. Sideon, it made her look pregnant. This look was just a big disappointment.”

Cara says: “OK, this is cute. I love a little bling to spice up a little black dress, or in this case, jumpsuit. I feel she could have beat her face a bit more and maybe added some earrings, but other than that, I really like it.”

Cara says: “This is giving me 1980s soap opera diva/ mother-of-the-bride vibes. It’s a bit dated and boring, and to be honest, not at all flattering on her. I’m sorry, Tia, I know this is your big comeback, but it’s just not cutting it.”

Cara says: “I do love a good white suit moment and this is really pretty.

It’s tasteful and elegant, yet sexy and fun at the same time. And that sleek hair is everything. It just looks super chic and sophisticated, yet daring.”

Cara says: “The name of her movie says it all: A big nope to this disaster.

First, why the vomit green colour?

Second, why the cheap (I’m sure it wasn’t) lace, and third, why the feathery mess around her waist?

There is nothing about this dress I like.”

A new queen reigns supreme – Environmentalist snags Miss Universe title

ith a strong platform of protecting the environment, Angel Cartwright, a 27-year-old private banker and conservationist, was crowned the new Miss Bahamas

Universe.

And now the work begins for a beauty queen who has high hopes of bringing home the crown from the international Miss Universe Pageant to be held in San José this December.

Angel, who ran on the platform “There’s No Planet B”, said: “Becoming Miss Bahamas Universe means that I will have the platform to reach a greater audience to assist in promoting conservation and preventing climate change. Along with the Miss Bahamas Organisation, we will work with local and international organisations to act as a liaison between the government and NGOs. Holding the title of Miss Bahamas Universe can assist with funding initiatives and convey the message of climate change to the masses.”

Getting to this point in her pageant career took a lot of hard work and determination.

“I began my journey in pageantry in 2013 where I competed for the title of Miss Teen Bahamas International. After winning, I competed at Miss Teen International and the Bahamas made its’ first placement in the Top 10. Five years later, I entered Miss Bahamas World, and although I was not successful, I was not dissuaded from my

goal of representing our country on the international stage. Fast forward to 2022, I am elated and honoured that I have the opportunity to represent the Commonwealth of the Bahamas at Miss Universe,” Angel told Tribune Weekend.

And the competition at Miss Universe was stiff, according to the organisation’s National Director Anthony Smith.

“It can only be described as a phenomenal event where beauty, elegance, poise, charm, charisma and passion were definitely on display,” he told Tribune Weekend.

The 2022 Miss Bahamas Universe Pageant took place at the Atlantis Showroom.

This year’s pageant was held under the patronage of Ann-Marie Davis, wife of the Prime Minister, who had announced her desire to partner with the Miss Bahamas Organisation and its 2022 Miss Bahamas Universe winner to help amplify her platform and passion projects. Mrs Davis said this is another way of “empowering women” both locally and internationally.

Performing a song from the Andrew LloydWebber musical “The Phantom of the Opera”, in full costume, Bahamian opera singers Candice Bostwick and Keson Tinker gave the opening salvo and started of the show off with bang.

The nine delegates went head-to-head in the swimsuit challenge, which earned them 25 percent of the overall score. The evening gown category

was another 25 percent and the judges’ private interview (which was held prior to Sunday night’s event) constituted 50 percent of the overall score.

As the evening progressed, the contestants were cut from nine down to the top five. This included Miss Andros Natalya Pratt, Miss Cat Island Bashar Isaacs, Miss Abaco India Davis and Miss Eleuthera Rickia Bonimy.

Each of the top five delegates had the opportunity to select a question from a glass receptacle.

Questions were varied but each was relevant to current world issues.

In the end, it was Angel, whose fans had travelled from Long Island to support her, who impressed the judges the most.

She also won an award for having the best platform of the evening.

“Miss Long island’s platform focuses on the sustainability of small island nations in relation to global warming, and indeed, she gave a small lecture to the packed audience about what would happen if we do not conserve and protect what we have now,” said Mr Smith.

Angel holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of the Bahamas, as well an an MBA in International Business and an MS in Finance from the Florida International University.

She supports the Bahamas National Trust (BNT), specifically its protection and restoration efforts regarding the mangrove forests, which she said are essential to the global ecosystem.

“I aspire to make an impact throughout the islands of the Bahamas. Conservation and climate change will affect every resident and visitor as we rely heavily on the beauty and bounty of our islands for our livelihoods. The warmer the climate, the stronger our hurricanes; we do not want a repeat of hurricane Dorian. The warmer the climate, the higher the sea levels, making our lowlying islands vulnerable to submersion,” she said.

“There are many organisations locally that conduct research on climate change prevention and also many international agencies that visit our shores to address this global issue. I intend to be an active and relevant voice for Bahamians in these discussions. I will work as a liaison as we reach the common goal of protecting our islands.

This will be the focus throughout the duration of my reign.”

Orlando ‘Landlord’ Miller Growing up in abject poverty and with a mother suffering from mental illness, the successful gospel artist often despaired and wished to end his existence. He tells Cara Hunt how he has now written a book about his early childhood to be a comfort to others experiencing rough times.

H

e has led a storied life, overcome adversity, and today he is a multi-award-winning gossip artist, but Orlando “Landlord” Miller’s almost wasn’t born.

When his mother found out that she was pregnant with him, she sought an abortion for what was the result of an extramarital affair – an unplanned, unwanted pregnancy.

“My mom went to the hospital to have an abortion but she didn’t have sufficient money and so she had no choice but to have me. So really, I am not even not supposed to be here,” he told Tribune Weekend.

“I never even know that had happened until she told me many years later. The man who I thought was my father was actually my stepfather.

“But a few years ago, my mom told me, ‘Landlord, of my six children, you are the only one I tried to have an abortion with and you are the one who always takes care of me’.”

Growing up, Landlord had many challenges. His mother suffered from a mental illness – the stigma of which affected the entire family. The children faced ridicule and were cruelly teased because of his mother’s bipolar disorder.

He remembers times when she would curse at the neighbours or pick him up from school wearing three different shades of lipstick.

“I was mortified. My siblings and I hid,” he said.

Poverty was another huge part of his childhood. There were times when they had no electricity because they could not afford to pay the bill, or when their landlord removed the doors of their house because the family was behind on rent.

There was one Christmas where the only food they had was rice and sweet corn, which they made into a pudding.

At times, the family also had to share a single toothbrush.

Growing up, Landlord said he had very little selfesteem and there were many times he had suicidal thoughts.

There were many times I wished I could just fall asleep and not wake up. This had to be the worst and longest nightmare of my life,” he said.

Despite the trauma of his early life, Landlord overcame through his own self-determination and his unwavering belief in God. Today, he is a multi-award-winning gospel artist and global syndicated radio host. He is happily married with two kids, owns and operates Landlord Media Company, hosts the Positive TV show, which is broadcast in Africa, South America, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia and 22 Caribbean islands and airs on nine televisions

And after years of thinking the story of his early life would make a great book, he can now add published author to his impressive resume.

Landlord has finally put pen to paper and released his book “Lord, You’re My Strength – From Adversity to Triumph.”

He deliberately chose to focus on his early childhood for his debut rather than his latter success because he wanted it to be a source of encouragement to others going through their own rough times.

“I didn’t want the book to be an ordinary book about singing or travelling the world, I really desired to touch hearts and inspire God’s people to trust Him,” he said.

“Growing up I had a very challenging life; I went through the worst of the worst. There is a lot of stigma that comes with having a parent with mental illness and the uncertainty of how her illness will make her react.”

Music was one of his few outlets.

Landlord credits the late Dr Myles Munroe, Dave Burrows, Christian Massive and Bahamas Faith Ministry with putting him on the right path and on the road to musical success.

Landlord said growing up he had to learn to see the value in himself and not his circumstances.

“I had to learn that I am fearfully and wonderfully made and that God would give me the desires of my heart. It was then that I started to act and dream big. I may not be the most educated or the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I know how to seek out people to help get the job done,” he said.

“Sometimes we may not know something, but we are just too embarrassed to seek help, but it’s what we need to do.”

hipping up homemade ice cream for the weekend, special occasions, and sometimes even to sell in small batches, is an age-old Bahamian tradition. Making soursop, coconut, guava and mango ice cream is a bonding experience that families throughout the islands enjoy and treasure. And each family has their own secret recipe they jealously guard.

While Bernique Pople will not be sharing her family’s special recipe with the public, she is sharing her own brand of homemade ice cream.

Growing up, she said making ice cream was a common activity among her friends and family. And now, inspired by her grandmother who started it all, Bernique is expanding her ice cream making to create authentically Bahamian treats Taste Da Flava is the name of her homemade ice cream brand that focuses on creating memorable flavours that reignite memories of childhood.

The company is a familyoriented business which reflects family traditions while catering professionally to the frozen dessert consumer market.

While it is traditional, Taste Da Flava also caters to the modern consumer by offering both dairy and non-dairy ice cream. Some of its most popular flavours are soursop, guava, butter pecan, rum raisin, Vitamalt and Guinness. Recently, Bernique launched a birthday cake flavoured ice cream.

During the holiday season, she offers eggnog, gingerbread, peppermint candy cane and red velvet flavours. Party services are also available.

“All fruit flavours are made with fresh fruit and are made from scratch. I have received positive feedback, especially with the native flavours. Also,

consumers were impressed by the Vitamalt and Guinness ice cream as they are ‘out of the box’ type of flavours,” she said.

As to the key for her success, Bernique said: “The preparation is very simple; authenticity and love. We ensure that every scoop within every 32-ounce container is made with love, effort and time.”

In addition to enjoying interacting with her clients, she was also thrilled to work with Celebrity Chef Maurice, owner of Taste of Excellence and the current personal chef of Porsha Williams (“Real Housewives of Atlanta”) and Simon Guobadia, founder and CEO of SIMCOL Petroleum.

“What I love most about my experience thus far with Taste Da Flava is the doors of opportunities that opened for me as an entrepreneur. I was given the opportunity to meet and network with leading professionals in entrepreneurship and participate in cohorts and workshops to enhance my

skills. Also, I smile every time I hear or read a review about my product or when customers smile when consuming the product. ood day, gardeners.

We need the rain! It is hot, and it is dry. It is a constant battle for me to get enough water on everything in this weather. Besides that, and the weeds, it is an excellent time to be pruning shrubs, and thinning trees to allow more airflow.

Watermelon seems to be doing very well at the moment. A customer came in this week and showed me photos of a field that they have planted and it is thriving with no irrigation. Watermelon does tend to prefer it dryer than wet.

Sweet potato should be doing just fine on its own as well. Irrigation saves a lot of time and effort watering in the garden, although I find it quite satisfying to take some time with a hose in hand to make sure things are properly wet down. It is certainly not something that I want to be doing all day long though, unless there is shade to take shelter under.

Many parts of New Providence seem to be losing shade, and we wonder why we get so grumpy on the road. It is hot and unpleasant! I was astonished to see a new building being completed on Prince Charles Drive, and as we do too often, every last tree was removed from the property. It is equivalent to a frying pan, and wholly unpleasant.

Why do many contractors, developers, and property owners scrape the land to the rock to remove every living thing? To cut down on maintenance? I flew into Toronto last weekend, and I was reminded how very responsible they are with trees up there, everywhere was covered in green. I have a friend who manages an incorporated area of Miami, and for any property owner to remove a tree, they first must get permission and they also must replace it with another tree elsewhere on the property. That sounds like a responsible contribution to the greater good.

We wonder why it is so hot.

We wonder where all the birds and insects have gone. I remain a believer that there ought to be

I drive through Fox Hill and all the old silk cotton trees, dilly trees and guinep trees help to cool houses, parking areas, and streets. Trees give us oxygen, they absorb carbon, they provide shelter for creatures great and small. Why are we so cruel to our environment here in Nassau?

Some developers after removing every living thing from a property, then go and put in a cursory palm tree or two that really provides no benefit of any kind as it is a drop in the bucket as to the damage that was caused initially.

There is a property in the west that has done just that, two or three little palm trees against a big structure, is a bit pointless, but it is also hot and not pleasant according to conversations I have had with folks who live or work in the area. All of us who work in the air conditioning or have air conditioners at home, love that AC. Trees condition the air in our

outdoor surroundings. Why do we hate them so much? Is it extreme cost cutting or lack of care for the environment? I am a bit baffled, I must say.

There are customers of ours doing their best to “regreen” Freeport and there has been a lot of planting going on in Abaco. Our country offers tourism as our primary product, well, no one wants to visit an island that straddles the tropics, to experience a hot, treeless island. Granted, there are parts of New Providence that are gorgeous and pleasant because native trees have been left in place.

Many of us look to those areas and say, hey, that would be a nice area to live in. It isn’t necessarily for want of the particular houses, but rather a pleasant environment, and we all deserve that as it was given to us,

but as a society we seem hellbent on destroying it.

Please, stop scraping the land to the rock and destroying the environment! Please, plant a tree! Not something to keep in the shape of a lollipop (pointelss), but a proper tree, to provide shade, carbon capture, oxygen, shelter. Are there any guerrilla gardeners out there? I know of a handful who go and plant things around the place, because it benefits us all. Where is town planning or the environmental control?

Why do we insist on tearing down trees? Someone please enlighten me, and please, plant a tree. As always, I wish you happy gardening.

Putting the country on the culinary map – Bahamian episode of National Geographic’s World of Flavor to air August 15

AHAMIAN viewers can mark their calendars for August 15, as this is the date the National Geographic channel is set to air the Bahamas episode of its newest show, “World of Flavor”.

“World of Flavor” features celebrity pitmaster Big Moe Cason who goes on a wild adventure in search of the most noteworthy culinary experiences the Bahamas has to offer.

And while in the Bahamas, Big Moe strikes gold as his adventures takes him crabbing through the forests in Andros, diving for conch and learning the ins and outs of this local delicacy.

“World of Flavor” premiered on July 25 on the National Geographic channel and will soon be streaming on Disney +.

In the show, Big Moe, a US Navy veteran and champion pitmaster who has is own brand of BBQ sauce, sets out on a journey to discover mouthwatering dishes cooked over an open flame. In addition to diving for fresh conch in the Bahamas, he roasts gators in Louisiana, connects with his roots in South Carolina, and wades into piranha-infested waters in Colombia. He also explores the connections between American barbecue and other cultures around the world along the way. In the midst of it all, Big Moe also serves up dishes that entice the locals of whichever location he is visiting.

The series is produced by Hit + Run for National Geographic. The show takes its cue from “Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted”, which is produced by Studio Ramsay Global for National Geographic and viewable on Disney +.

The Bahamian episode features Chef Simeon Hall Jr and other locals.

HOST Big Moe Cason with Chef Simeon Hall Jr Chef Hall was the main Bahamian talent working with Big Moe, assisting with his culinary expertise on local dishes, culinary history and working with fire the Bahamian way.

Create Serendipity, a local production company led by Megan Minus,

also played a major role in producing the Bahamas episode.

“I was the local producer/fixer,” Megan told Tribune Weekend.

“We sourced the talent, scouted locations, provided the set design props, local production and execution.”

The episode was filmed in various locations all over New Providence and Andros.

Megan said working on “World of Flavor” was one-of-a-kind experience.

“As always, I love to remain the student in each of my productions, and working with the producers like Lizzie and Jon, they brought a calm coolness to set every day, which was enjoyable. We provided the team with turn-key services, but as usual, each day brought a new set of challenges, from weather to logistics and set design, so we had some highstress moments as well, and all of this requires urgent strategy to provide effective time management and problem-solving, but it’s my job to keep the crew calm and work behind the scenes to get everything done, and I think we accomplished that at a very high professional level,” she said.

In an earlier with Tribune Weekend, Chef Hall said the “World of Flavor” highlights the unique culinary culture of the Bahamas while diving into an aspect of tourism that has been untapped for some time.

He said the show should be seen as big deal because it shows agri-tourism, culinary tourism, destination tourism in new ways.

As a result of the Bahamas being featured on the show, he hopes Bahamians and the powers that be do what is necessary to position the country as a culinary destination.

Literary lives – Harold Ross (1892-1951)

The concise editor of The New Yorker Sir Christopher Ondaatje remembers the concise, sophisticated demeanor of the legendary first editor of The New Yorker magazine.

“Editing is the same as quarrelling with the writers – same thing exactly.”

– Harold Ross Harold Ross was born in a prospector’s cabin in Aspen, Colorado, on November 6, 1892. He was the son of a Scots-Irish immigrant miner George Ross and his schoolteacher wife Ida Martin Ross. When he was only eight years old in 1900, the family left Aspen because America went off the silver standard and the price of silver collapsed. They moved first to Redcliff and Silverton, Colorado, and then to Salt Lake City, Utah.

In Utah, he got his first taste of publishing when he worked on the high school paper – The West High Red & Black, and was a stringer for The Salt Lake Tribune, the city’s leading daily newspaper. He became fascinated with the written word. At 13, he dropped out of school and ran away to his uncle in Denver where he worked for The Denver Post.

Although he returned to his family,

he did not return to school. Instead, he got a job on a smaller afternoon daily newspaper, the Salt Lake Telegram.

By the time he was 25 Ross had worked for as many as seven different newspapers, including the Marysville California Appeal; the Sacramento Union; the Panama Star and Herald; the New Orleans Item; the Atlanta Journal, the Hoboken, New Jersey Hudson Observer; the Brooklyn Eagle; and the San Francisco Call.

While in Atlanta he covered the trial of Leo Frank, who was convicted in July 1913 of the murder of 13-year-old Mary Phagan, whose body had been found in the basement of a pencil factory.

In World War I, Ross enlisted in the US Army Eighteenth Engineers Railway Regiment. In France he edited the regimental journal, and went to Paris to work for the Stars and Stripes, on which he served from February 1918 to April 1919. He claimed to have walked 150 miles to reach Paris to write for the Stars and Stripes, where he met Alexander Woollcut, Cyrus Baldridge, Franklin Pierce Adams, and Jane Grant, who would become his first wife and helped him with an initial investment in The New Yorker.

After the war Ross returned to New York City where he assumed the editorship of The Home Sector – a magazine for veterans, which folded in 1920 and was absorbed by the American Legion Weekly.

He then spent some months working for Judge, an American humour magazine.

– Harold Ross It was Ross who envisioned a new journal of metropolitan sensibilities and a sophisticated tone. With his wife Jane Grant he co-founded The New Yorker. The first issue was dated February 21, 1925. They established the F-R Publishing Company with yeast heir Raoul Fleischmann.

It was a touch-and-go start-up.

Ross was one of the original members of the Algonquin Round Table, a group of New York City writers, critics, actors and wits, who gathered initially as part of a practical joke every day for lunch at the Algonquin Hotel from 1919 until roughly 1929.

They engaged in wisecracks, wordplay and witticisms that, through the newspaper columns of Round Table members, were disseminated across the country. Charter members included: Franklin Pierce Adams,

columnist; Robert Benchley, actor, Heywood Broun, columnist; Marc Connelly, playwright; Ruth Hale, writer; George S Kaufman, playwright; Dorothy Parker, critic and short story writer; Brock Pemberton, producer; Murdoch Pemberton, Broadway publicist; Harold Ross, editor The New Yorker; Robert C Sherwood, playwright; John Peter Toohey, Broadway publicist; Alexander Woollcott, critic and journalist.

Many others moved in and out of the circle. Ross used his contacts of “The Vicious Circle” to help get The New Yorker started.

Alexander Woollcott said Ross resembled “a dishonest Abe Lincoln” but he had uncanny judgment.

He attracted talent to his new publishing venture, featuring writers such as James Thurber (also a cartoonist), E.B. White, John McNulty, Joseph Mitchell, Katherine S White, S J Perelman, Janet Flanner, Wolcott Gibbs, Alexander Woollcott, St Clair McKelway John O’Hara, Robert Benchley, Dorothy Parker, Vladimir Nabokov, Sally Benson, A J Liebling, and J D Salinger.

The initial prospectus for the magazine read: “The New Yorker will be the magazine which is not edited for the old lady in Dubuque.”

James Thurber noted that the prospectus does not read or sound anything like Ross., summarising Ross’s goals so: “’Casual’ was Ross’s word for fiction and humorous pieces of all kinds ... it indicated Ross’s determination to give the magazine an offhand, chatty, informal quality. Nothing was to be labored or studied, arty, literary, or intellectual.”

– James Thurber Ross forbade sex as a subject, checking all art and articles for offcolour jokes or double entendres, and rejected advertisements thought unsuitable. Ross disliked fatalistic pieces and sought to minimise “social-conscious stuff”, calling such articles “grim”.

Ross worked long hours and ruined all three of his marriages as a result. He was a careful and conscientious editor who was determined

One famous question to his writers was “Who he?” Ross believed that the only two people everyone in the English-speaking world was familiar with were Harry Houdini and Sherlock Holmes. He was notorious for overusing commas. Quite aware of his limited education, Ross treated Fowler’s Modern English Usage as his bible. He edited every issue of the magazine from the first until his death – a total of 1,399 issues.

THE ICONIC cover of the debut issue of The New Yorker memoir The Years With Ross, citing his former chief’s pranks, temper, profanity, anti-intellectualism, drive, perfectionism, and an almost permanent social discomfort, and how these all shaped The New Yorker staff. Ross and his magazine slowly became famous among the literati and newspapermen. Thurber quoted John Duncan Miller, the Washington, DC, correspondent for The Times of London: “During the first half hour, I felt that Ross was the last man in the world who could edit ‘The New Yorker’. I left there realising that nobody else in the world could.”

Ross designated William Shawn as his preferred successor, and Raoul

Fleischmann confirmed Shawn as the new managing editor after Ross died.

Harold Ross died in Boston, Massachusetts in December 1951, during an operation to remove a lung after discovering his bronchial carcinoma had metastasised. He died of heart failure during the operation.

Great and Little Stirrups Cays

I

n his youth, King William IV (1765-1836) served in the Royal Navy and served in the West Indies.

He is seldom given credit for the law that abolished slavery, because, although it was passed during his reign, it came into effect after his death, while Victoria was Queen.

William was known as the “Sailor King” and it was during his reign (1765-1836) that two ships of the Royal Navy – the HMS Blossom, an 18-gun sloop, and the HMS Thunder with 12 guns – surveyed the islands between North and South America, between 1829 and 1837.

In his book, “Owen Surveys in The West Indies, 1829 to 1837”, Captain Richard Owen (later rear admiral), RN, FRAC, had this to say about Great and Little Stirrup Cays: “The Stirrup Cays are two small cays at the NW extreme of the Berry Islands group… being the point around which vessels steer, when bound across the Great Bank, (This is why the lighthouse was built in 1863.) They merit more particular description.

“Great Stirrup Cay is two miles long…one mile wide… about half a mile from the West end is a small sandy cove with some wells of good water, and a house and flagstaff at the back, where stock and vegetables, in small quantity, may generally be procured (Unlike the uninhabited cay of the 1920s)…between Great and Little Stirrups Cay, there is an anchorage, called “Slaughter Harbour”, sheltered from all but North and NW winds. which may be entered by vessels drawing twelve feet. Little Stirrup Cay is uninhabited It is about one mile in length.”

Last Friday, I wrote about the Berry Islands – today, I focus on Great Stirrups and Coco Cays, where “great” things are planned.

An article in The Tribune of July 29 included a picture of two cruise ship piers that the

Norwegian Cruise Line (owner of most of that island) plans to build.

Once these piers are completed, NCL ships will be able to bring its ships right up to shore. Right now, the ships anchor some distance from the cay and passengers are ferried to shore by, relatively, small boats. When the sea is too rough for the ferries to operate safely, passengers are inconvenienced and NCL, the ferry-boat operators and the franchised Bahamians vendors all lose money.

The plans are due to be discussed at a public meeting a Great Harbour Cay on August 9, as required by the Environmental Planning and Protection Act. Unlike the Berry Islands a century ago, virtual attendance is a possiblity.

Just as Disney revolutionised Central Florida, NCL on Great Stirrups and Royal Caribbean Group on Little Stirrups, are transforming these Berry Islands to sites where countless relaxing options are offered, including, but not limited to: dining, excursions, shopping, watersports and ziplining.

In 2019, NCL brought us 286,357 visitors. Their expansion programme is expected to up that to 714,000 a year. Since each cruise passengers pays $18 tax, that’s $12,852,000 into the Bahamian Treasury.

Life’s simplest of pleasures

A

s summer moves on, and we read how unbearably hot it is in Europe and the United States, I begin to feel that we are relatively fortunate with our high 80s on a regular basis. Yes, we do have high humidity, and lately that has been compounded with a vast about of rain.

The rain refreshes everything, washes dust off the leaves, gives the grass a nice watering, makes sure thirsty trees sop up the required hydration, and more importantly leaves puddles everywhere for birds, bugs, lizards, snakes and other local fauna who wander through my garden on a constant basis.

It is often these very same animals and insects who give such simple and peaceful pleasure. We do not have a view here, so our garden has become our view. At present there are bursts of colour everywhere. Red, blue, yellows, white and all shades of pink and purple. The orchids are blooming from every tree in sight. Their delicate heads bobbing in the breeze as their beauty astonishes and they compete for attention. I watch those small buds appear on the end of their stems, at first innocuous little bobbles that grow and look full of nothing until one morning you are greeted by one of nature’s masterpieces… a bright, delicate and wonderful row of orchid flowers. What a treat for tired eyes.

As I walk out into the garden, I am victim of a sensory overload with birds singing different songs from various trees spaced around me. The melodious and plentiful singing of a mocking thrasher is perhaps the most enchanting. I just never get tired of hearing them call out to each other, or warning me to keep my distance from their young who are perfecting the art of flying from tree to tree without risking the perils of landing on soil where they may be unable to take off from. Just hearing one of these remarkably chatty and diverse call songbirds makes me smile.

There was a sweet yellow-breasted bird called the Bahama nuthatch (Sitta insularis). It is feared that they may have become extinct after the ravages of Hurricane Dorian. Some people

report that there may be a small flock of perhaps 50 birds in Grand Bahama.

There are also several types of pigeons around my garden and they add to the symphony with their rhythmic and incessant cooing The garden stretches in front of me with a very green and dense carpet of grass, it looks devoid of life, but if I were to peel back that grass, I would uncover a plethora of inhabitants, small and smaller still, rushing around building nests, laying eggs and searching for food. A virtual underworld of insects that we walk over unnoticed and they remain unscathed. All of these small creatures have very definite roles in the health of our planet, they are small cogs in a very big picture indeed providing essential care and food for other insects.

Every now and then a busy little snake will slither past, as if on a mission, dashing to get away from humans and their companion dogs, dashing to get to the safety of the underbrush where it is damp and cool, to curl up and have an undisturbed sleep.

In the morning, I love to admire the delicate and detailed artwork created by our resident spiders, if it has rained there are drops of moisture glistening in the sun from the web – casting shadows as I search for the artist of this magnificent work. The brightly painted yellow garden spider builds some of the most elaborate webs. I try to avoid breaking them, and I particularly try to

I yearn to see more hummingbirds in the garden and have planted some shrubbery that I am told will attract them. Their busy little wings hovering over a delicious flower always brings pleasure to observe.

Butterflies are not frequent, but we do have them and their wonderful colours add to the kaleidoscope that has become my back yard.

When night falls, things become quiet, but there is actually a great deal of night hunting going on. We have a family of translucent geckos who live near our front door, the family has grown in number and sometimes now there as many as six out on the wall taking advantage of the lights that attract small unassuming insects to

The babies scurry away when I open the door, but the adults stand their ground and watch me as I talk to them… I guess they can hear me and know, I hope, that I come in peace.

Summer through a lens

ummertime means long days, enjoying the sun, sand and sea of the beautiful Bahamas.

And for veteran photographer Eric Rose, it also means grabbing his camera and taking hundreds of pictures, documenting his favourite season.

“As a photographer, I have always found that summer is a little different to capture. I find that the blues and greens just seem more vibrant, more atmospheric— even during a summer shower,” he told Tribune Weekend.

All the traditional Bahamian summer activities provide a great backdown for fabulous photos, he added.

“During the summer, it is all about nature and culture. The beaches, the green hills of the Family Islands like Acklins, Cat Island or Eleuthera, and the waterfowl that are here to make wonderful subjects to capture.

Then we have the return of festivals, regattas and homecomings that offer so much to a willing photographer.”

Eric said that shooting in the heat of a Bahamian summer does come with its own unique challenges.

“The heat of summer affects my photography. The obvious aspect of sweating and making sure you stay hydrated are important, but also, you have to deal with the possible distortion of hot rising air, haze and sometimes a mirage or two,” he explained.

“I have had a number of pictures affected when the camera focused on those conditions.”

His advice to other photographers who want to brave the heat to capture their own summer magic is to just grab your camera, go outside and start shooting.

“For anyone who wants to capture summer with their camera, I encourage them to just start shooting with this thought in mind: What is the story I want to share with people who see my photo?

“You would be surprised how that may affect your photos,” he said.

Eric’s images of the Bahamas are being shared around the world. Last month, he posted an image of the Bahamian waters on Instagram to commemorate World Ocean day shot with his Samsung camera.

The electronics brand shared the photo on its Instagram page with its 4.7 million followers.
