The Bible’s message on hard work and wealth
RELIGION
By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net “He who has a slack hand becomes poor but the hand of the diligent makes rich.” – Proverbs 10:4 THE scriptures in the Bible are filled with so much wisdom that can be applied to everyday life. For Christians, the Bible should be their go-to authority on all matters. One of the main books of the Bible, often referred to “the book of wisdom” is Proverbs. It is ultimately a guide to pleasing God and fellow man. The book contains nuggets of wisdom about honouring God, doing what is right, matters of the heart, and even matters of finance and economics. And many Christians turn to these pages for advice and insight on those matters. One popular verse that sheds light on finances and working diligently that many people have applied to their own situations is Proverbs 10:4, which says: “He who has a slack hand becomes poor

but the hand of the diligent makes rich.” Bahamian Christians said when reading Proverbs, they try to decipher what is being said and once they get a revelation, the wisdom also comes. Kayla Bethell said: “This line speaks for itself really. There’re a lot of people that expect rewards for doing absolutely nothing. And even when they are doing a little something, they are still unsatisfied, because of the get-rich-quick mentality. I believe nothing worth having or good comes easy. The quickest way to poverty is to be lazy. Do good works and you’ll see the change in your life, which won’t be overnight. Once it’s done diligently like the scripture says, and with honesty, you’ll at least survive. It boils down to the hands that choose to work and the hands that don’t; one leads to wealth and the other is on a downhill begging spiral.” Danielle Rolle said: “This is a great scripture because it applies to practical life. Work is something that we have to do every day. This Proverb is pretty straight-forward. If you do not work, you
will not have, and if you work hard enough you can secure wealth. All of the world’s richest people only got to where they are today through working hard.” However, she added that working hard is not a guarantee for achieving wealth. “There are many people that work hard but are not wealthy. However, what is certain is that if you do nothing you are sure it be poor,” she said. Jaylin Johnson told Tribune Religion that she firmly believes in the adage that faith without works is dead. “You cannot expect to achieve anything worth having if you just sit around and wait for it to be handed to you,” she said. Thomas Percentie said: “People sometimes are lazy and have this mindset that things are just supposed to fall into their lap, then they want to act surprise when they see people achieving their goals. But when God sees you making the effort, hustling, putting in the work, your hands will be blessed and you will achieve success.”

Optical illusions – A cloud of witnesses I
once made the mistake of becoming vehemently angry with God. My mother had passed away and I was in a very dark place. Not that anyone would have noticed. I corralled family members and friends like a pro. I didn’t even cry at the funeral, so busy was I at making sure that everyone else was taken care of. Afterward, I was a living, breathing optical illusion. On the outside, I operated on all cylinders: strong for my sisters, making the hard and unpopular decisions, carrying out final wishes like a phenomenon. On the inside – totally different picture! My anger toward God boiled and brewed, ready to burst at the slightest thought of anything to do with Him! My most vivid picture during this time is of myself during an afternoon private devotion about two years after she died. I figured I should come clean with God about why I didn’t trust Him anymore. I took out my journal and started writing. The only thing I remember was taking the pen and ripping the journal to literal threads. I pulled and tore at it like something feral had taken over me. I was so filled with bitterness at the fact that after all the faithfilled journaling and prayers with my mom and expectation of God’s healing she had died anyway!? Somehow reason brought me back to my senses and I pulled out another journal. It was one
AYANNA CLARKE
from about five years prior to mom’s death; one where I had written what I saw myself doing in the coming years. I had written that I wanted an educational centre. I had planned a name and logo; a motto and mission statement. All of this before my mother passed. Fast-forward to what was then the present. I realised I had opened in the very home that she once occupied. Suddenly, it hit me. If my mother had not passed then I would not have been able to offer children a safe and kidfriendly environment in which to grow and learn, doing their best academically, socially, spiritually, etcetera. You see, often times we suffer the idea that we are alone in battles and in triumphs; we assume that burden and treasures are ours to carry in isolation.
A NEW study reveals some surprising findings about Episcopal clergy. The truth of the matter is “no man is an island.” For many of us, these past connections are what we have built our lives on. Whether it was the discipline of a parent, the confidence of a friend, the mentorship of a teacher...we have matured and developed as a result of our connection to our past, those who have gone before us. The Bible admonishes, “since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses... let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us…” (Hebrews 12:1-2). Consider this week’s illusion. Some may see a tree, standing tall and proud on its own – rooted and grounded, able
to withstand the pressures that life may afford. But do you see the faces carved into its shape? Faces of older men and women, faces of influencers and guides... interwoven into the branches, sketched in the twigs and tree limbs, beginning from the very root. We are not alone, not even if we find ourselves by ourselves. We must be encouraged that we carry the legacy of those who have gone before and our responsibility is to build on what they left behind. I can’t tell you of the numerous successes that have come from that institution. Young people are living abroad on scholarship, others have
travelled through grants and various clubs. Some are tech geeks, while others are athletes. Some have found work here in New Providence while others have left to pursue exciting new careers. And I have grown enough to realize that my mom’s legacy was the start of it all. You never know what will happen to fulfill God’s purpose but you have the fortitude of a Godly heritage bolstering you. They make up your “cloud of witnesses.” I wasn’t alone, and neither are you! Stand on their legacy, continue moving toward purpose with their example! Make them proud! God bless you this week!
‘Episcopal clergy becoming more diverse’ THE Episcopal Church has revealed some surprising new insights about its clergy demographics. Key findings from the Church Pension Group’s latest research shows that Episcopal clergy are gradually becoming more diverse, in particular with respect to sexual orientation. A significant increase in the number of female bishops over the past five years was recorded and it was found that clergy of colour are disproportionately
represented at higher and lower compensation ranges. It was also revealed that clergy of colour and LGBTQ+ clergy are more likely to serve outside the parish than white heterosexual clergy members. The research found that the path to becoming a bishop can differ by race/ethnicity and that compensation is higher for male clergy than female clergy. “This research shines a light on the evolving demographics of Episcopal clergy,” said Matthew J Price, PhD, senior vice
president of Research & Data at CPG. “Some of the results were expected, but some were a surprise to us—and may surprise others as well." The Rev Alistair So-Schoos, data scientist, Research & Data at CPG, added, “Our findings offer insights into the trends in ordination, deployment, and compensation that could inform the Church’s discussion of diversity, equity and inclusion. I encourage anyone who has an interest in the diversity of
the church’s clergy to view our webinar to learn more.” The CPG, a financial services organisation that serves the Episcopal Church, shared demographic insights about Episcopal clergy via a webinar (www.cpg. org/clergytrends) that was presented by its Research & Data team last week. The research was collected in response to several resolutions passed by the 79th General Convention of the Episcopal Church. CPG has hosted several webinars to share information about
its work, to collect feedback, and to discuss topics of interest to the church. Individuals are encouraged to view past webinars with senior leaders of CPG and its board of trustees who have engaged in conversations on topics ranging from pension parity to racial reconciliation and socially responsible investing. Past webinars can be viewed on CPG’s YouTube channel.

‘We are raising up women to be men’ – TD Jakes’s sermon stirs up controversy
T
By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Reporter acadet@tribunemedia.net
his year’s Father’s Day is long behind us, but a sermon uploaded on that day by Bishop TD Jakes is now causing a firestorm on social media, among his followers and Christians, especially women, everywhere. The video entitled “Real Men Pour In” was almost an hour long and contained several controversial statements by the famous megachurch pastor and author; statements like, “We are raising up women to be men” and allusions to the natural order being upset in today’s world. “It’s gon’ be rough this morning,” he said during his sermon. “Real men are not a deficit. Real men are an asset. They pour in. If Adam had not allowed Eve to pour into him, sin would have never come into the world. Sin came into the world because Adam broke the order. We were not designed to receive from women. Your self-esteem is compromised when you have to ask your wife for lunch money.” He went on to say: “I’m not saying you gotta be rich. I’m not saying you gotta be famous, I am saying that you have got to be the one who pours in, not the one who takes out. When Adam started eating out of his wife’s hand, sin came in because the divine order was broken. This breaks all sociological orders of the culture we are living in now because we are raising up women to be men.” Bishop Jakes said women aren’t praised for their femininity, they are, however, lauded in contemporary society by how tough, rough, nasty, mean, aggressive, hateful and possessive they are. “And you are climbing the corporate ladder but we are losing our families. I know you can buy your own car; I know you can buy your own house, but until you create a need that
I can pour into, I have no place in your life. So, stop coming home bragging to me about how much you don’t need me, and wonder why I shy away,” he said addressing his female congregation and listeners. “The conversation has become, let’s prove to the men how dispensable they are. And it is born out of pain because we hurt you, and betrayed you, and lied to you, and cheated on you. And you became like you became out of pain.” People everywhere all still reacting to Bishop Jakes’s sermon, with some even alleging that it has cost him church members. The popular website Dredd’s Info went so far to claim that Bishop Jakes’ megachurch was now half empty after his “blasting Black women” in his message. MTO News posted photos online showing a half empty church, claiming that this was the result of his bashing women by calling them too independent and accusing them of trying to be like men. Danyelle Thomas, founder of Unfit Christian and a leader in the 21st century African American Progressive Faith community, posted on Instagram: “Between Kim Burrell the Pulpit Bully and TD Jakes mouth breathin’ into the mic to call Black women masculine, I’m exhausted. “Y’all still asking women to shrink. Still preaching to us as the problem AND problem solvers. Still shackling misogynoir to virtuous womanhood and calling it God’s word.
BISHOP TD JAKES “Y’all still preaching and singing bout love but not living or leaning into it for real. We still letting riffs, runs, and cadence tickle our emotions as ‘the gift comes without repentance’ for folks really doing harm in Jesus’ name. “At this rate, the Black Church will die by its own hand. What a disappointment.” However, others feel the message was a timely one that needed to be publicised. “This sermon is powerful for a woman like myself who's been raised to walk in masculinity in order to be safe, successful and happy by myself. I feel validated in asking God to help me learn how to allow and make space for a masculine partner in my life because in truth that is what I need,” said one commenter. “I’ve been living and loving outside my nature all my life
and confused why I can't find the kind of commitment and connection I deeply need and desire. This sermon will be going onto my playlist for sure.” Another commenter wrote: “I had to listen to the sermon for myself because everyone is all over the place with it. I understand completely Bishop what your message was saying. This was an amazing message as a
young woman growing with children, with a husband.” “It is sad how this message was taken all out of context,” one viewer wrote, stating for them this message was a truthful one. “May God touch all of our hearts and heal our communities so we can hear and change our ways,” they said.
