Markel, a Grand Bahama native, continues to ride out the island’s lockdown which imposed by the government in response to the recent spike in COVID19 cases. She is hoping her fellow Grand Bahamians are coping and taking this time to seek messages from God. “I advise Grand Bahamians, and by extension the world, to get closer to our creator and Heavenly Father because I believe only He knows all the answers and can help and guide us on this life’s journey. Having a devotion to read can be a great source of help with ‘drawing nigh to God’ (James 4:8),” she said.

Writing the book, she admits, was a start-and-stop process, however, she eventually was able to deliver the finished “Messages from God”.

The book was released on Amazon late last year, right after Hurricane Dorian devastated Grand Bahama and Abaco, but Markel didn’t have the opportunity to officially launch the book until recently.

“The inspiration for the book happened years ago when I first started sending morning scriptures and messages to my WhatsApp contacts. Many of my contacts would message and encourage me to document my messages and put them in a book. I loved the idea but I never was disciplined enough at the time to start writing until 2018. I started compiling my messages and prayed about the direction to take it in. So I decided to make it into a 30-day devotional including a scripture, a message, prayer, practical steps, and a page to journal your thoughts after each chapter. But the

Heavenly Father was my ultimate inspiration,” she told Tribune Religion.

The book touches on a multitude of topics that Markel not only speaks about but practices and lives, such as forgiveness, facing fears, brokenness, endurance, the power of words, having a faith-filled friend, and putting God first in all.

Even though she wrote the book, Markel said she’s made it a habit to read passages herself in moments when she needs inspiration.

Words of inspiration are vital at this time, she said, because many are losing hope, especially in Grand Bahama and Abaco; islands that are still struggling to recover from Dorian even as the 2020’s hurricane season is upon us.

“I believe that this book is vital for such a time like this because we are living in such uncertain times, with all that is going on in our country and the world at large, especially with this pandemic, and people need encouragement. We all need a sense of hope and to increase our faith. Proverbs 15:23 states,’ ....and a word spoken in due season, how good it is’,” she said.

“I would like to encourage everyone living on Grand Bahama to firstly pray.

Philippians 4: 6-7 says, ‘Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.’ Secondly, I would like to encourage everyone to trust God and have firm faith in Him and His sovereignty. There is absolutely nothing too hard for God. Thirdly, for those who are infected by the new coronavirus and those who are not, please heed all the precautionary measures. Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, and drink lots of fluids like water and bush tea. Revelation 22: 2 says, ‘The leaves are for the healing of the nation’.”

SHAPING A NEW NATION - PART I

S WE all wrestle with the overt and covert changes taking place all around us, we are called as a people to shape a new vision that will shape a new nation in the coming years. As a legally emancipated people, we are free to discover our own freedoms and limitations, along with the endless possibilities that dreamers can imagine and followers can execute.

As a Christian nation (for the most part adhering to Christian principles as opposed to, for example, the Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu or any of the other world faiths), we have to determine how our faith will shape this emergence. Christian education has a tremendously important role to play in the work of the church and the spiritual growth of each Christian in the promotion of knowledge about God, and preparation for encounter with God. In light of this, three questions come to mind: 1. Does Christian education in the

love for God, made manifest in our love for each other. It exists in a world that places things above people; that applauds individual prosperity in the face of mass deprivation, while encouraging the following of private desires over the desire to do the will of God. We have to study the Christian story as presented in the Bible in order to learn how the early Christians saw the presence of the kingdom, and the changes which they saw fit to make in themselves and in their world. We must tell our story in the light of theirs using Bahamian commenters on Bahamian culture to reveal our differences and similarities.

It is for us to offer what they do not intend to look for, and thus do not expect to find.

With a real sense of vocation to love, serve and minister to our neighbours, we could win so many victories for Christ by preparing hearts to meet Him. Our islands offer excellent opportunities for retreat, so we must take advantage of the ‘peace which passes understanding.’ As we work in stores, show people historic sights, give them directions, for example, we should exhibit the mind and spirit of Christ in our attitudes and conduct.

Christian education must assist Christians to see that accountability is the key to the calling to follow Christ. The spreading of the gospel is our lifetime profession, our lifelong vocation regardless of age, social situation, et cetera. The other side of the coin is the sense of self-worth which comes from speaking of God’s love. Too many of us lose sight of the vision when we cease to share it.

All too often older members are led to a sense of uselessness when society discards them at the retirement age, whereas if they knew that there was the work of the Lord still to do, retirement would offer the opportunity of unlimited service for God. Young people in search of a cause and an identity could direct their energies towards God’s work of salvation.

There is no time to entertain a slothful disposition if one takes seriously Christ’s commission to go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19).

It is an amazing journey to become a new creation, and all of us have our part to play in the shaping of this great nation.

WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES, POPE ‘DEEPLY PAINED’ OVER TURKEY’S MOVE ON HAGIA SOPHIA VATICAN CITY Associated Press POPE Francis said he is “deeply pained” over the decision by Turkey to change the status of Hagia Sophia — which was originally built in Istanbul as a Christian cathedral — from a museum to a mosque.

In a very brief, improvised remark, Francis, speaking recently from his studio window overlooking St Peter’s Square, noted that the Catholic Church marked Sunday, July 12, as International Day of the Sea. “And the sea brings me a little far away with my thought: to Istanbul,” the pontiff said. “I am thinking of St Sophia and I am deeply pained.”

Francis said no more but was clearly referring to the move by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to formally convert the monumental building back into a mosque. The colossal Santa Sophia cathedral was turned into a mosque after the Ottomans conquered the city in 1453.

The Turkish secular government in 1934 decided to make it a museum.

The pope, who heads the Roman Catholic church, is adding his voice to strong objections by the head of the Genevabased World Council of Churches (WCC).

That organisation has described its “grief and dismay” at the decision to designate the Hagia Sophia as a mosque.

Interim secretary general of the WCC Ioan Sauca said in the letter released by the Geneva-based group that the Hagia Sophia has been “a place of openness, encounter and inspiration for people from all nations.”

The colossal Hagia Sophia was built 1,500 years ago as an Orthodox Christian cathedral and was converted into a mosque after the Ottomans conquered Constantinople, now Istanbul, in 1453. The secular Turkish government decided in 1934 to make it a museum, and millions of tourists now visit the landmark annually.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan formally converted the

Completed in the year 537, it originally served as a Greek Orthodox Christian patriarchal cathedral and was briefly a Roman Catholic cathedral, before being converted into an Ottoman mosque and then a secular museum, before being designated as a mosque again last week. building back into a mosque last Friday and declared it open for Muslim worship hours after a high court annulled the 1934 government decision.

Sauca said the museum status had been “a powerful expression” of Turkey’s commitment to inclusion and secularism. He urged Erdogan to reconsider the decision “in the interests of promoting mutual understanding, respect, dialogue and cooperation, and avoiding cultivating old animosities and divisions.”

The WCC says its membership comprises 350 Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican churches with some 500 million believers.

Erdogan, a devout Muslim, has frequently used the debate over Hagia Sophia to drum up support for his Islamic-rooted party. The decision has provoked deep dismay among Orthodox Christians and strong criticism from neighbor and rival Greece.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian also said France “deplores” Turkey’s decision on Hagia Sophia.

Pray without ceasing

BY CARLOS SPENCER THERE is so much for us to pray for: the gift of life, our families and friends, our jobs and achievements, our communities, political and civic leaders, our nation, public servants and agencies, etc.

As busy as we might be in our daily lives, the prolific Apostle Paul encouraged us to “pray without ceasing”. (1 Thessalonians 5:17, KJV) Some of us tend to pray only when we encounter the twists and turns of life, but this is not what Paul was referring to. We should pray at all times.....in the good as well as the challenging seasons. Moreover, Jesus gave us a model prayer in Matthew 6:9-10. He taught us “After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven. Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”

Prayer is our primary means of communicating with God; it represents the second pillar of our two-way communication process with God. (study of God’s word being the other) There is literally no better source, authority or companion that we can communicate with as we travel along life’s path. We should seek to pray without ceasing as a way of life. Prayer is very important and for some believers, particularly those in active ministry, it represents the raison d’etre. We can observe various examples of Jesus leaving the crowds and His disciples to spend quiet time in prayer with God (for example Mark 1:35, Luke 5:15-16).

The significance of prayer cannot be over-emphasised. By engaging in constant prayer we remain focused on our Creator and are less likely to err; Jesus made it clear that we are less prone to fall into temptation. We read in Matthew 26:40-41, “And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and said

unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing but the flesh is weak.”

Praying for others is a very important duty of the believer. Our prayers should extend beyond our personal needs and should include prayers for everyone, including those that offend and despise us. This is a true representation of the Christ in us. I Samuel 12:23 records: “Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should offend against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way.”

We have complied with the will of God if we act accordingly, notwithstanding any negative energy that we might have encountered beforehand. We should pray without ceasing. There is no limit to this process; very simply, pray ad infinitum.

Once again, as believers in Christ, we should pray without ceasing. Our fate is much too important to leave to chance or happenstance. Tomorrow is promised to no one and we should prepare to meet our Creator. Mark 13:32-33 reminds us: “But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.

Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.”

ARE YOU THERE GOD? – WHETHER WE PRAY HARDER OR ENDURE WRATH DEPENDS ON THE RELIGIOUS DOCTRINE OF PROVIDENCE –

By PHILIP C ALMOND Emeritus Professor in the History of Religious Thought The University of Queensland (THE CONVERSATION) – It’s not the end of the world. But with the coronavirus running rampant, you could be forgiven for thinking so.

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse symbolically portray the four events that will occur before the end of the world: plague, war, famine, and death. It is the first of these that is striking fear into hearts worldwide. But with the rhetoric of our being “at war” with this disease, of “an invisible enemy”, a high mortality rate, and increasing food shortages, all four horsemen appear to be riding out.

How does God figure in all this?

Within the religious doctrine of Divine Providence – that all that happens in the universe is under God’s sovereign control – we can identify five different responses.

1. Providential fatalism The first is providential fatalism.

According to this stance, my fate and the fate of the world have all been planned out in advance. Whatever happens is God’s will and there is nothing we can do to alter this plan. On this account, we should all just carry on as usual and should take no active precautions.

In its most extreme forms, this is interpreted in line with the biblical statement: “They will pick up snakes in their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them” (Mark 16:18). Among some conservative Protestant churches in the United States, worshippers pick up venomous snakes and hold them up as they sing and dance. It is believed those who die do so because it’s God’s will.

2. Providential activism The second response is providential activism, which holds to the belief that, as the African American spiritual puts it, “He’s got the whole world in his hands”.

Canadian Catholic magazine, declared: “Of course the coronavirus is a punishment from God: all our sufferings are the consequence of sin; for us sinners, they are a just penalty for our sin; and God has complete control over what happens and how it affects us.”

The downside of this response is that it makes God an arbitrary and cruel despot rather than a God of love and compassion.

5. Providential interventionism

But this is interpreted to mean, even though God orchestrates all of history to bring about his purposes, he relies upon us to accomplish them.

Providential activism holds that God knows and sees all, but it’s up to us to enact his plans.

While providential fatalism would see it as sinful to act against God’s will, providential activism would view acting to avoid catching a disease as in accord with God’s will. Thus, taking active measures to avoid contagion is to cooperate with divine providence rather than act against it. The mainstream Christian churches (Catholic, Anglican, the Uniting Church) along with the Jewish and Muslim communities are endorsing this activist approach.

3. Providential exclusivism Third, providential exclusivism would have us believe that God will look after those whom he has chosen for salvation.

This exclusivist approach is common among conservative Protestant groups

that divide the world into the saved and the damned on the criterion of having accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.

4. Providential punitivism

The doctrine of providence is not completely set in stone. For, fifth, providential interventionism holds God can be persuaded to “change” his plans and end the plague because of our prayers to him to do so.

This may seem to contradict the notion of divine providence. But, as medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas put it, “our motive in praying is, not that we may change the Divine disposition, but that, by our prayers, we may obtain what God has appointed”. In short, God had built our prayers to him, and his response, into his original plan. You never get anything past Thomas Aquinas!

O ye of little faith

Throughout the history of Christianity, the most common response to plague has been providential punitivism. In its simplest form, pandemic disease is God’s punishment for our sins (or the sins of others) and a call for repentance.

It has good biblical precedent: “Then the Lord sent a plague on the people, because they made the (golden) calf” (Exodus 32:35). The Jesuit priest in Albert Camus’ The Plague warned: “...the unjust should tremble. In the vast granary of the universe, the implacable flail will thresh the human corn until the chaff is divided from the grain... Beaten on the bloody threshing floor of pain, you will be cast out with the chaff.”

The coronavirus is yet to provoke providential punitivism in Australia. But, like the coronavirus, it is spreading. A recent issue of Lifesite News, a conservative

For the non-believer, none of the above attempts to relate the ways of God to the world is in play. The Coronavirus is nothing but a natural, if deeply unfortunate, event for which there is neither ultimate explanation nor ultimate meaning. It just is.

The virtue of the doctrine of the divine providence is that everything is going to plan in spite of appearances to the contrary. The problem is that it’s hard to believe, in the face of global pandemics, there is any divine plan at all. If there is, God might need to do a pretty radical rethink – and sooner rather than later.

Nurturing your faith with help of apps

OR most people it has become a habit to reach for their cell phone as soon as they get up in the morning, be it to check for messages, news or social media activity.

And this checking continues throughout the day; it’s done almost unconsciously at this point. Cell phones have become such an integral part of our lives that the religious community has also learned to take advantage of the technology to spread the word of God. In addition to the actual Bible being available to download, there are numerous Bible and Christian apps to choose from. There are apps that offer daily devotionals and scriptures, while others provide commentaries and even inactive adventures for kids.

Bahamian Christina Brown said she uses an daily prayer app to help her immerse herself in a life of prayer and to spend more time with God. “Honestly, I have always been a prayerful person, but I am not afraid to say that I needed to get better at it. A simple ‘Thank you, God’ is good and well, but I strive to go deeper. Time spent with God is well spent and this is one thing I enjoy. I have a time set on the app to alert me every morning at 7am during the time I am up getting ready for work.

I love the convenience of it. I mean, if a phone is one of the things we, especially young people, pick up every single day – sometimes it’s the first thing we touch – why not start your day off with a prayer reminder. If prayer time during the evening or night is best for you, then you can set it before you go to bed. I love it,” said Ms Brown.

Her morning notification message, she said, is the following: “Heavenly Father. Through You all things are possible. Because of You, nothing that I face is impossible. Give me Your energy for today. Infuse me with your vitality. Plant

in me the drive to do everything You want me to do today. Pour Your power into my mind and body. Energise me.

Amen.”

Dana Butler said her devotionals are set to alert her during the day while at work. They provide her with a sense of calmness throughout the chaos.

“I have a job that can sometimes get very hectic and one thing... is always important to me – my mental health and stability to cope. I live by mantras and affirmations; I meditate and I exercise.

But the greatest option of all is having the freedom and access to give God thanks. It makes me feel good to read an inspirational word of God. It empowers me and fulfils me. People wonder how I am so calm when I should be angry in certain situations, and to these people I say, try Jesus,” said Ms Butler.

Francine Gibson added that as a Christian building on your personal relationship with God is important, and if for you that means staying connected through a Bible app, then so be it. She said daily devotionals give you private time to meditate with God; they are straight forward and easy to comprehend.

“In times like these we need all the help we can get with keeping the faith.

The world is going through some trying times and one can easily get sucked into a state of depression or a dark place. I encourage everyone to do what’s best for them in staying close to our Lord and Saviour. God said He will never leave or forsake His people and that is the all time truth. I pray for better days and economic wealth for our people and our country going forward. We will come out of this better than we were before,” said Ms Gibson.
