IS a swimming pool a good investment?

It depends.

A swimming pool can be a good investment if you live in the right place.

What do I mean?

If you live in a neighbourhood with lots of swimming pools, then NOT having a swimming pool may dim a buyer’s view of the property.

Of course, the swimming pool will have to be in good shape and properly maintained.

Return on investment (ROI) estimates vary. Whatever return you get – if any – will depend on multiple factors.

Some of the factors include: • The age and condition of the pool • The size of the pool • How the pool features fit in with the rest of your neighborhood

Installing a pool is costly and requires weekly maintenance – more if a problem develops. For instance, pools can act as a catchment for debris and dirt runoff during heavy rains and storms and would require extra work.

So, work out the costs and think carefully before committing.

The Pros of Owning a Pool There’s nothing like the sparkle of sunlight and the refreshing feel of water on a hot summer’s day.

A well-maintained pool helps showcase a property.

A pool is particularly attractive to people who: • Like to swim • Have a young family • Enjoy outdoor entertaining • Like water exercise

The Cons of a Pool • Installation and maintenance costs • In many instances, limited use by adults • Even in the Bahamas, the water often doesn’t warm up until June • Potential risk to toddlers

What it Boils Down To The main consideration is how often the pool will be used.

If you live in a community where a pool is expected, then it may be a good idea to add a pool to make the property more attractive to buyers.

Make sure the pool conforms with the environment and isn’t designed in such a way that it sticks out like a sore thumb.
