Jonquel Jones wins WNBA All-Star MVP Dedicates honour to her deceased aunt !"#!$%&'#(')!!( *+,-.#(/0123#%4,201 !"#$!!"% #&'!$()*)+',-()# JONQUEL Jones came off the bench and played with a heavy heart that led to her adding the most valuable player of the 2026 Women's National Basketball Association's All-Star game to her historic collection of awards from the league. The 32-year-old Grand Bahamian native playing for the 2024 WNBA champions New York Liberty secured the MVP hardware after helping Team Spoon pull off an impressive 129-122 victory over Team Coop at the United Center in Chicago on Saturday night. The 6-foot, 6-inch centre produced 22 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists in only 22 minutes off the bench. She shot 8-of-17 from the field, made four 3-pointers and finished with a plus-nine rating. As the league celebrated its 30th anniversary, bringing the past, the present and the future together, Jones emerged as the fourth player in WNBA history to win all three MVP awards at least once, joining Lisa Leslie, Maya Moore and Candace Parker. But she placed herself in a class of her own when she added this year's AllStar MVP title, the 2024

“My aunt passed away not too long ago and today is actually her memorial. I got permission from my family to be here and to celebrate this moment. This one is for my auntie.” — Jonquel Jones finals MVP and the 2021 WNBA MVP to the 2023 Commissioner's Cup MVP, the Sixth Woman of the Year in 2018 and the Most Improved Player in 2017. Jones, coming off her second Commissioner's Cup title this year to go along with her first in 2023, was appearing in her sixth WNBA All-Star game, including 2017, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2024. This one, however, was extra special and after the second quarter, Jones said she got in the groove and was eager to dedicate it to her deceased aunt Marilyn. "My aunt passed away not too long ago and today is actually her memorial," Jones said. "I got permission from my family to be here and

THE 2026 Commonwealth Games is underway in Glasgow, Scotland, and the 20-member team representing The Bahamas is hoping to make their presence felt. So far, swimming and boxing have engaged in competition over the first weekend with the other two sports - track and field and judo - in action starting this week. Swimming at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre Day three on Sunday Two Bahamians competed in the men's 50m freestyle with Lamar Taylor getting the better performance with third place in the eighth of nine heats in 22.20, while Marvin Johnson was fifth in heat seven in 23.02. They both advanced to the semifinals where Johnson placed fifth in the last of the two heats in 22.30 and Johnson was eighth in the first one in 22.86. Johnson also competed in the men's 100m butterfly with Emmanuel Gadson. In the third of five heats, Johnson was sixth in 55.15, while Gadson finished as the winner of his heat for the second time at the games in the first heat in 56.55. Action has already begun in three of the latter with the remaining seven starting to compete this week. Judo Xavion Johnson suffered a loss to Ulises Mendez of Mexico by Ippon in the 43rd second of the quarterfinals of the men's -73 kilogram class yesterday at the Judo
XAVION JOHNSON Pavilion. Ippon is the highest score a fighter can get and is "one full point," which ends the match right
away, similar to a knockout in a boxing match. The 20-year-old Johnson, one of two Bahamians competing in judo, came back in the repechage in his second match and lost again by Ippon in the 41 seconds to Ferney Ruiz of Colombia. Karra Hanna, the other representative for Team Bahamas, will begin competition in the women's +78 kg class today. Tadej Pogacar wins record-equalling fifth Tour de France title !"#$%&'(%#)*+(,&%# -)#./0123#415261 PARIS (AP) — Tadej Pogacar won a record-equalling fifth Tour de France title yesterday. The 27-year-old Slovenian dominated this year's race to join Belgian Eddy Merckx, Spaniard Miguel Indurain and Frenchmen Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault as the only riders to win five Tours. After finishing safely in yesterday’s 21st and final stage in Paris, Pogacar finished six minutes, 26 seconds over Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel in the overall standings. Pogacar’s UAE Team Emirates XRG teammate Isaac Del Toro, a 22-yearold Mexican making his Tour debut, was third at 9:42 back from Pogacar, who smiled and held up his hand to signify his wins. His
teammates then joined him as they stood proudly on the Champs-Élysées. Pogacar won five stages at this year’s race to take his impressive tally to 26 overall. He tried to win yesterday, too, but victory ultimately went to Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel, who just held off the chasing pack on the home straight for his second stage win at this year's race and fourth overall. Sunday’s 88.7-kilometre (55-mile) stage looped around Paris and was mostly processional, although less so than in previous years, which were usually entirely flat stages for sprinters and not for the rest of the peloton. For the second straight year the stage featured the hugely popular uphill climb through the Montmartre district, a sharp one-kilometre dash which
riders tackled three times before finishing on the Champs-Élysées. It proved even too much for Pogacar, who could not match Van der Poel's raw power in the closing stages. Shortly before 6pm local time, Pogacar shook hands at the start line with Evenepoel and Ecuadorian veteran Ricardo Carapaz, wearing the polka-dot jersey for the best climber. Van der Poel and Dane Mads Pedersen, the green jersey winner as best sprinter, were among the expected contenders for the stage win. Crowds roared as the riders began the first climb up Rue Lepic in Montmartre, with the famed Sacré-Coeur basilica looming over them. Pogacar moved ahead after the second ascension of Montmartre, with Van der Poel, Evenepoel and

‘Jazz’ Chisholm Jr earns YES Network Player of the Week !"#$%&'()'&# !*++%,(./0123#-45.67#+345.63. jburrows@ tribunemedia.net FOR much of the 2026 season, Jasrado "Jazz" Chisholm Jr has been one of the New York Yankees’ most polarising players. The 28-year-old Bahamian infielder has drawn criticism mostly from inconsistent production at the plate and moments that some believe have reflected a lack of focus. However, over the past week, Chisholm has begun reminding both teammates and critics why the Yankees believe he could be one of the club’s most dynamic players. His turnaround earned him YES Network’s Player of the Week honours after a six-game stretch in which he collected six hits, blasted three home runs, drove in six runs and posted a .957 OPS.
The hot streak has come at a critical time with the Yankees searching for offence while dealing with injuries, including the absence of superstar Aaron Judge who has been absent from the lineup since May 31. Chisholm’s biggest statement came in back-to-back performances against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates. He delivered the deciding blow against the Dodgers with a go-ahead solo home run in the eighth inning of a 2-1 victory before following it with a two homer, five RBI performance in an 8-5 win over the Pirates. The second home run against Pittsburgh gave him three consecutive home runs across two games, providing the offensive spark New York desperately needed. The surge has helped improve what had been an underwhelming season statistically. Entering the
weekend, Chisholm was batting .223 with 16 home runs, 43 RBIs and a .708 OPS. Those numbers remain below the expectations that accompanied him into the season, but his recent production has shown signs that he may finally be finding his rhythm. Ironically, one of Chisholm’s biggest supporters during the slump was Chisholm himself. Following his game winning homer against the Dodgers, he did not shy away from evaluating his own performance. “I’ve sucked all season,” Chisholm admitted. Rather than allowing the struggles to snowball, his Yankees teammates rallied around him. According to Chisholm, Aaron Judge, Anthony Volpe and several others repeatedly reminded him not to lose confidence. “They just were like, ‘bro, let’s not forget who you are. You’re the greatest in the world,’” Chisholm said.
Instead of offering mechanical hitting advice, teammates focused on restoring the confidence that has long defined his game, believing that once his mindset returned, the production would follow. Chisholm’s recent power surge has come with more disciplined at bats and a renewed aggressiveness in the strike zone. While his season numbers still leave room for improvement, the Yankees have received the type of impact they envisioned when he is swinging with confidence. The criticism surrounding Chisholm this season has not been limited to his offensive struggles. His style of play has frequently placed him under the spotlight. Earlier this season he was criticised after failing to know a rule during a game, drawing attention for a lollipop in his mouth while standing on second base during another contest and for occasional

This one is for my auntie.” Jones said she was in communication with her family and she made sure it was okay for her to be in Chicago for the game. “My teammates knew, people that were closest to me knew,” she stated. “And so I just wanted to come out here and represent my family well and shout out to my auntie Marilyn. “She’s resting in peace now with all the love and this night was definitely dedicated to her. My aunt meant a lot to me. She was one of the matriarchs in our family.” As for her record-breaking performance, Jones said
she just simply went with the flow of the game and trusted her teammates to get the job done. “Oh man. Um, you know, just coming out here and playing, trusting my teammates,” she stressed. “Um, yeah, it’s just, it’s a great experience.” The game was played before a huge crowd of 19,783 fans, who got their money’s worth with a fast paced encounter, highlighted by Jones’ teammate Olivia Miles’ 11 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists for rookie. On the losing side, Marina Mabrey’s hot shooting, and Dominique Malonga becoming the youngest player ever at 20-years-old to dunk in a
WNBA All-Star game, was unforgettable. To her credit, Jones was also on the short list of superstars to dunk in an All-Star game. The others were Lisa Leslie, Sylvia Fowles and Brittney Griner. In this game, Jones came off the bench mid-way in the first quarter and scored her first basket on a lay-up for the front-running Team Spoon. Her final basket came late in the fourth. Jones, who formerly played for Tabernacle Baptist Academy and Bishop Michael Eldon, left Grand Bahama at the age of 14 to play for Riverdale Baptist School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, where she won a national championship title.
She was recruited to play for Clemson University where she played with the Tigers during her freshman year in 2012-2013. She then transferred to George Washington University where she completed her collegiate eligibility before she was selected as the sixth pick overall in the 2016 WNBA Draft by the Los Angeles Sparks. Before the draft was done, Jones was traded to the Connecticut Sun in exchange for Chelsera Gray and two draft picks. She then requested a trade out of Connecticut and was sent to New York in January 2023 as part of a blockbuster three-team deal.

We also have ‘golden boy’ Eagan Neely, who has already run 20.64 in the 200m; Taysha Stubbs in the javelin; Kenny Moxey Jr in the decathlon and Carlin Archer, the CARIFTA gold medallist and Penn Relays’ champion.” At the championships, Moss said The Bahamas will contest both the men’s and women’s 4 x 400m relays and they will attempt to assemble a men’s team for the 4 x 100m. With the team competing in events including the sprints, hurdles, long and high jumps and the javelin, Moss said there’s no reason why the athletes should not make at least 4-5 finals and be in a position to compete for a medal. Also travelling on the team as chaperones are Mikhilo Strachan and Patrice Pinder. Jacqueline Rolle will be the safeguarding officer; Keir Miller will be the team doctor and Jenica Frederick will serve as the physiotherapist.

LeBron picked Philadelphia, eight years after billboards asked him to come to 76ers -.&/01&2345678'& 9:&-)%;<=>),,&?#$=<# LEBRON James wound up picking Philadelphia, and no billboards were required. Back in February 2018, a businessman named Asher Raphael arranged for three billboards to be placed a few miles outside of Cleveland in a lighthearted effort to woo James to the Philadelphia 76ers. James decided later that year to leave the Cavaliers and join the Los Angeles Lakers. The billboard bit seemed futile. Instead, maybe it was just premature. James announced Friday that he's joining the 76ers in what he said will be the “last decision” of his playing career — and, finally, Raphael can say the billboard investment from eight years ago paid off. “I was in the middle of a board meeting and my phone was going off like something was on fire," said Raphael, the co-CEO of Power Home Remodeling, a Pennsylvania-based firm with offices around
the country. "And it was people from all walks of life, employees, former employees, friends from all over the country being like: ‘It worked. Process completed.’ It was the coolest thing.” The original billboard idea was loosely based on the award-winning 2017 film “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” and was simply intended to be something fun. It wound up going viral. Raphael ordered billboards with the messaging of “Philly Wants LeBron” and “Complete The Process” — a nod to the 76ers' infamous “process” of rebuilding, with hopes of becoming a contender. The third billboard showed where James would fit on the court with the other Sixers starters at the time: Dario Saric, Ben Simmons, Robert Covington and Joel Embiid. Of those, only Embiid remains with the 76ers. Raphael considered ordering more billboards this summer but didn't place any orders. Turns
out, he didn't need to. “We just wanted to drop a seed that Philly wanted him," Raphael said. "I think a lot of people think of Philly as a great sports town, but opposing teams think of it as kind of an intimidating place. And we just wanted to drop a seed that he would be welcomed here and he’d love it.” Raphael's company got some name recognition from the billboard move in 2018, and he said it was a great morale boost to employees. And he fully believes James coming to Philadelphia, to play alongside Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and Bahamian Valdez “VJ” Edgecombe, is going to pay off for a city that hasn't seen its NBA team win a championship since 1983. “Philly, right now, is on fire," Raphael said. “At that moment, we became an undeniable contender. And if he comes to Philadelphia and we get that title and that trophy after 44 years, the country will see what Sixers fans are about.”
