Death Notice For

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dolores Elizabeth Knowles,

84 née Carroll

and formerly of Deadman’s Cay, Long Island, Bahamas who died peacefully in her sleep at Burrows Home for the Aged, Freeport, Grand Bahama, Bahamas on the morning of Wednesday, June 24th, 2026.

She is survived by her son: Dwight Knowles; daughter: Melanie Moncrieff; grandchildren: Olivia Knowles and Adair Moncrieff; three step children: Stephen, Andrew and Diane Knowles; three sisters: Lourey Smith, Alecia and Valeria Carroll; three brothers: Raleigh, Cedric and LeClain Carroll; two sisters-in-law: Eartha and Antoinette Carroll; daughter-in-law: Vivianne Fleischman; and a large loving family of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Born on 7 November 1941 in Lower Deadman’s Cay, Long Island to Dorothy Carroll, née Burrows, (deceased) and Raleigh Carroll (deceased), Dolores was affectionally known as Doll or Dolly to her loved ones. As the eldest of ten (10) children, she took on a motherly

role within the large Carroll family. She ensured that her siblings and those of her husband, Virginius Knowles (deceased) were well educated and cared for back home in Long Island, Nassau and eventually in Freeport, where she finally settled with her own three children.

The Knowles family were one of the early residents of Freeport where they lived initially in the 1960s. Michele (deceased), Dwight and Melanie grew up in a lively home which not only included half siblings but aunties and uncles. Due to Doll’s fastidious nature every family member had an assigned chore in order to keep their busy home tidy and in order. Dolores exuded such elegance and pose during this period, when her social calendar was filled with engagements.

Dolores’ lifetime of dedicated service within the community began at the tender age of fourteen (14) when she began teaching at Lower Deadman’s Cay Primary School. Doll had a facility with mathematics and bookkeeping, and throughout her working life she owed and managed several retail businesses. She was an avid reader and engaging storyteller. She adored travelling, especially by cruise, and the places she did not manage to visit in her lifetime, she explored through the pages of her novels.

For the nearly three years our beloved Doll battled with the debilitating effects of Dementia. Yet during this time she still filled the room with her infectious laughter; old time stories of island life; and unique expressions which will linger in our hearts and memories much like the love she shared unconditionally and tirelessly.

A private memorial service to celebrate and honour Dolores will be held for close friends and family. In lieu of flowers, her children will be accepting donations which will be made to local charities which Dolores supported.
