O

ver the last three days, the Bahamas has been hosting athletes and sports fans from all over the world. It is the largest sports event ever to be held in the country.

Spectators attending the 2017 Commonwealth Young Games – staged a venues like the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium, the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre and Betty Kelly-Kenning National Swim Complex – have seen exciting competitions in tennis, rugby, swimming and boxing. Judo has been of particular interest to local fans, as the Bahamas picked up its first medal, a bronze, when Kara Hanna, who was also the Bahamian flag-bearer during the opening ceremony, placed in the Judo +70kg event. Mya Beneby won the second bronze medal for the Bahamas, also for Judo. Last night, the Bahamas’ Lily Higgs and Isaak Bastian also won two silver medals in the 50m breaststroke.

The Games continue this weekend with track and field, and the next rounds and finals of swimming, rugby, tennis and beach volleyball.

“Neither. I prefer to go adventuring on a Saturday morning, with either my mummy or my boyfriend. With mum, we hit up all of the nurseries looking for plants, before grocery shopping. With my boyfriend, we have Bahamian breakfast at the Cricket Club before visiting the market at Doongalik.”

Q: Rum, wine, cocktail or Kalik?

“All four! I craft a pretty good cocktail with Kalik, cranberry, frozen rosé and a shot of rum. So maybe my answer is cocktail.”

Q: What is the one thing that you can’t live without?

“I must have sunshine and a large bag where I can throw all of the bits and pieces I buy at the markets in. Oh, and company. I don’t like to spend weekends alone unless I’m cleaning.”

Q: Weekend away, where would you go and why?

“Definitely Long Island.

Some time at Gordons Beach, lunch at the Outer Edge Grill (where they make the best cracked conch in the Bahamas), then check out the blue hole at Lochabar, and just read and relax for the rest of the time.”

“Saturday breakfast for sure.

interview A visit aboard the Logos Hope in 2009 when he was just a schoolboy inspired a years-long desire to go out into the world and do missionary work. Today, Brandon Kemp serves on the ship which is known as the largest floating library and tells Cara Hunt about the sacrifices and opportunities that go along with his chosen path.

randon Kemp was only 13 when he first learned about the Logos Hope ship, but even at that young age he was intrigued by the non-profit organisation’s dedication to spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ by travelling all over the world with one of the largest Christian book fairs.

Eight years on and Brandon is now one of three Bahamians currently volunteering on board the ship when it sailed into Nassau Harbour for a 12day visit last Friday.

The ship ministry began in 1970 as part of the global Christian training and outreach movement OM International. Since then, OM’s ships have visited 480 different ports in 151 countries and territories and welcomed over 46 million visitors on board.

Their goal is to to bring knowledge, help and hope to the people of the world. This is done by supplying vital literature resources, encouraging cross-cultural understanding, training young people for more a effective life and service, providing needed relief, and sharing a message of hope in God wherever there is opportunity.

The current ship, the Logos Hope, visits each port for several weeks, opening its gangways to hundreds and sometimes thousands of visitors each day. On average, around one million visitors have been welcomed on board every year. The floating book fair offers more than 5,000 titles, providing many visitors with their first ever opportunity to purchase quality educa-

tional and Christian literature.

The last time the ship was in the Bahamas was in 2010, when a teenage Brandon was a student at Queen’s College. He was able to go on board the ship as part of a special tour and it really fuelled his excitement about the organisation.

“I remember while we were there, all of a sudden there were these sirens that started blowing and lights started flashing. It was a stimulation of being persecuted and I realised just how good we had it in the Bahamas, because there are millions of people in the world who have been persecuted because of their Christian faith,” he told Tribune Weekend.

It was then that Brandon first considered mission work as a future occupation.

“I volunteered with Camp Bahamas and I also did a mission trip to Haiti.

The idea of volunteering with Logos came up again in a youth group meeting and it really made the idea come home to me,” he said.

After graduating from high school, Brandon applied to Operation Mobilisation, the parent company of the Logos Hope. The organisation has mission fields in 110 countries and the the ship itself is considered a mission field.

Caribbean volunteers are required to take part in a six-day seminar in either Trinidad or Jamaica before they are assigned their duties and sent to the ship. All volunteers are required to commit to at least one year on board.

“That was three and a half years ago,” said Brandon. His initial stint was

The ship will be in Freeport from July 29 to August 6.

for two and a half years and his original placement was as a deck hand.

“It’s different for everyone who comes on board and it is a very sacrificial job. You have people who come on board and literally will clean toilets or wash dishes for six months straight,” he explained.

Brandon currently serves as a project manager, which means that he is part of the advance team which travels ahead of the ship to arrange the logistics of the ship’s time in port.

“There is quite a lot that has to be done before the ship can arrive. You have to have meetings with the various government officials, meeting with the churches and organisations that we will be partnering with while in port so that we can plan the events and the fundraising events, and we also meet with the local corporate sponsors and begin the publicity process.”

While he was originally signed up as a volunteer for two and a half years, the post as an advance team member required him to sign on for an additional two years Brandon said his experience with the Logos Hope has been so life-changing that he is thrilled with the additional time on board.

“I have had the opportunity to travel to 22 different countries, including in East and Southeast Asian, Africa and the Caribbean. Being on the ship itself has been its own adventure. I was the only Bahamian on board for about a year and a half, so I became very close to some of the other Caribbean volunteers on board. There are also a lot of Europeans on board the ship as well. In total we have 400 volunteers from 63 countries,” he said.

Brandon explained that the secret to getting along with persons from so many cultures and nationalities is to not get easily offended.

“Only the love of God helps us live together,” he noted. However, the one thing that they all share is the homesickness that can come with being away from family for such long periods of time.

“I was on the ship for two and a half years before I had the opportunity to come back home for the first time. The great thing about being on board is that everyone can relate to missing their families and being away from home, so we can all support one another and have open ears to listen,” he said.

But he admits that there are times when it is harder than others to not become overwhelmed.

“I remember it was at the end of my first prep time, we were in Durbin, South

Africa, and we were working very long days, like from 5am to 10pm, six days a week. There was a lot of work and I just felt overwhelmed and I was like, I need to just go home. But I spent a lot of time praying about whether I should stay or not or not. But when the ship docked we welcomed so many people and it helped me see the reward of all the work that I had done, and so staying strong to the mission is a help,” he said.

Brandon said his time abroad has also afforded him tremendous opportunities to acquire business and professional skills.

“The job that I do is really a job that people have to go to university to do and and I was only 20 when I started doing it. I get to talk to government officials

and I have a lot of responsibility. Like I said initially, I doubted myself, but I have learned that when God has his hand in something He will provide.”

Although there are different advance teams for different ports, Brandon was on the team that prepared for the Bahamas visit.

Usually the ship partners with existing charities in the ports that it visits, and while in Nassau the Logos Hope is working with the Bahamas Down Syndrome Association, the Salvation Army, and several churches and orphanages. Another team is in Haiti preparing for the next stop, and after he sails with the ship there, Brandon will fly on to Saint Lucia to begin preparing for that port visit.

The other two Bahamians on board are Shawna Sands, who also works in advance prep, and Vonette Jean, a business services manager.

“So Bahamians are doing great things on the Logos Hope and I would love to see other Bahamians consider volunteering because it is a tremendous opportunity and experience. It will set you straight and help you develop your passions and your talents,” he said.

Brandon has just over a year left in his current stint on the Logos and said when that is complete he plans to attend college in Singapore to study business management.

“I think that Singapore has a lot in common with the Bahamas and we can learn a lot from their business model. So my plan is to get my degree there and come back home,” he said.

For now, he continues to help spread the gospel in all the countries the Logos Hope visits.

BTC to launch new Bahamian app BTC is working with Bahamian developer Stephen Brown to create an app just for the telecommunications company.

Vice President for Mobile Alphanique Duncombe said: “We’ve used this opportunity to team up with local talent in the development of this app. We wanted to create a truly Bahamian experience while showcasing how talented our people can be.”

The “BTC Starmaker” app is designed to resemble market heavy hitters Snapchat and Instagram, according to app developer Stephen Brown.

Mr Brown has been in the information technology arena for the past five years. After starting his craft as a hobby, he opened CSB Tech Emporium where they started to offer mobile app development services in 2015.

The ‘BTC Bahama Rush’ game was developed by Stephen Brown, who is now developing the new ‘BTC Starmaker’ app “I took the entrepreneurial route, opened my own company, and presented my ideas to various parties.

I met with BTC in 2016, where we began to collaborate on different projects,” he explained.

Mr Brown has also helped to develop the “BTC Bahama Rush” game which is now in BTC stores. He said that the “BTC Starmaker” app will feature Bahamian themed filters like the police hat, a conch shell, and a Junkanoo head piece. Users will also be able to play and lip sync Bahamian music on the app.

“I was very elated about the idea of collaborating with BTC. I was happy that they were able to see the value behind my work, and I’m happy to partner with them to create quality products,” said Mr Brown.

The product will be the first of its kind in the Bahamian market, and will be available to both Android and iOS users free of charge. BTC remains committed to providing top notch products and services to keep Bahamians connected one filter at a time.

‘Tings on a Stick’ invites guests on a cultural journey Warwick introduces new Asian restaurant

ith the aim of enhancing the culinary experience for guests staying at the adults-only, all-inclusive Warwick Paradise Island, the resort’s Tings on a Stick is relaunching as an á la carte Asian cuisine restaurant, completely revamping its shish kebob menu.

The new restaurant concept has been developed under the direction of Chef Tan Boon Khiang, who brings 22 years of culinary expertise and innovation to the table.

Pad Thai restaurant raises the bar of what an all-inclusive dining experience should be in the Bahamas. From the first bite of the appetisers, the taste buds are awakened and the culinary journey begins as diners can select sashimi papaya salad, Asian BBQ spare ribs, homemade chicken broth wonton soup and vegetable spring roll as their first course.”

Some popular Asian-infused entrées include: Nasi goreng (Indonesian fried rice) with chicken or shrimp, cilantro, sesame, Asian vegetables, shrimp paste, curry, traditionally topped with a fried egg and garnished with cashew nuts; Pad Thai (rice noodles) with Thai spices, scallion, chicken or titi shrimp, tofu, scrambled egg and garnished with

“We are happy that Chef Tan Boon Khiang has joined our team to lead the transformation of Tings on a Stick.

His knowledge and experience has guided the kitchen team to enact these

changes over a short timeline,” said Mr Davis.

Chef Tan, a native of Brunei, has travelled to and worked in the United Kingdom, Dominican Republic, Indonesia, Malaysia and currently resides in the Bahamas. He credits his uncle, a Singapore chef, with his advancement in the culinary world. He said he learned the basics of Asian and Cantonese cuisines, and most importantly, moral values from him.

Chef Tan’s extensive training began at the University of Salford in Manchester, where he graduated from in 1997. Through his studies, he built a repertoire of Malaysian and Thai recipes while working at traditional Asian restaurants. He strives to bridge cultur-

al differences and foster understanding through food, making Asian cooking accessible, healthy and nutritious.

“Warwick Paradise Island Bahamas offers five outlets where guests can satisfy their appetite with our internationally-inspired cuisine,” said Mr Davis.

In addition to Tings on a Stick, the resort’s restaurants are: Edgewater Grill, an open-air steak and seafood restaurant located on the Warwick Sunset Terrace; the á la carte Abbiocco, an Italian fine dining restaurant with a casual atmosphere; The Verandah, which provides indoor and outdoor al fresco seating, and the poolside Chickcharnie’s Pizzeria & Grill, which serves pizza, burgers, chicken and local favourites for lunch daily.

Banking on local talent The Central Bank presents...

“Bright Lights & Raw Gems” Assistant Curator Jodi Minnis highlights current exhibitions at the Central Bank of the Bahamas Art Gallery. This week, the focus is on the latest showing by the Bahamian Project.

nder the umbrella of the Bahamian Project, “Bright Lights & Raw Gems” is a grand collaborative effort of notable Bahamian photographers.

Participating photographers are Melissa Alcena Dante Carrer, Vado Culmer, Chris Day, Demetrius Francis, Guilden Gilbert, Torrell Glinton, Rosemary Hanna, Paul Harding, Nowé Harris-Smith, Ben Jamieson, Donald Knowles, Scharad Lightbourne, Rashad Penn, Alessandro Sarno, Andre Sheppard, Duke Wells, Ana-Lisa Wells, Lyndah Wells, and Sofia Whitehead.

They came together under the leadership of founders Duke and Lisa Wells to produce more than 30 portraits of Bahamians from all walks of life, from cultural giants like the late Cleophas Adderley Jr to everyday Bahamian icons like Locksley “Potcake” Thompson.

Photographer Nowé Harris-Smith, who photographed Cliffie Humes, Locksley Thompson and Beverley Wallace-Whitfield, said: “Participating in the project has been memora-

ble for me. This was the first time I got to rely on my traditional photography skills instead of my creative aesthetic with previous images.”

Mrs Harris-Smith also said that sharing in the experience of the project gave her a level of access to the country’s icons that she may not have gained before or on her own.

As photography is becoming an increasingly accessible medium, “Bright Lights & Raw Gems” reinforces the fine artistry of photography. Directing a camera lens at a subject and capturing that subject differs from simply “photographing” the subject. One can see this engagement of photographer and subject clearly throughout the entire exhibition. This was most evident in the portrait of Bahamian entertainer, producer and songwriter Kirkland “KB” Bodie done by Lyndah Wells.

Ms Wells captures Mr Bodie sitting with his keyboard on what appears to be a bus stop. The presence of lines throughout the composition and how they frame the singer sets this portrait apart.

Co-founder and Project Manager Lisa Wells noted: “The Bahamian

Project is making a significant impact on photography in the Bahamas by bringing together key members of the photo community to help raise the standards of the craft and show the importance of photography to the art and cultural communities. This exhibition at the Central Bank, which we’d like to see become an annual event, is validation that photography should be taken seriously as a fine art in the Bahamas.”

Duke Wells, Bahamian Project founder and creative director, added: “It’s a real honour to hold an exhibition at the Central Bank of the Bahamas Art Gallery, where the public art movement started decades ago. And it is wonderful to work with Antonius Roberts and Keith Thompson. Antonius has a long history of using his creativity and talent to put art at the forefront of the public’s consciousness. His support of the Bahamian Project has been important to its continued success.”

Bahamian educator publishes debut novel

Review: Jeff Abbott keeps readers on edge in ‘Blame’

larger than life hero, a politically motivated murder and a mysterious cat called Trumpet all play a role in the debut novel by Bahamian Glen C Nairn.

“The Unseen Letter – A Play in Five Acts” is the name of the book, and in it the former educator explores his thoughts on post-slavery and post-colonial Caribbean societies.

Published by House of Nehesi in St Martin, the story is set in a nation of islands where a showdown between colonial symbols and the country’s national and cultural identity is taking place.

The book’s protagonist, a former Pan-Africanist, leads a group aiming to eradicate names of government entities and personnel titles that hark back to, and/or celebrate the island’s slavery and colonial past.

“The Unseen Letter” also sees the intersection of Bahamian and Caribbean history and culture post-slavery.

“No single thing or idea inspired me to write this play. It is the culmination of my thoughts on various aspects of post-slavery and post-colonial Caribbean societies,

especially Bahamian. We could be more self-determining in many aspects of our lives, instead of accepting those colonial and foreign concepts that do not work for us,” Mr Nairn told Tribune Weekend.

‘The Unseen Letter’ at its heart, the author explained, provokes the question of the validity and necessity of traditions inherited once before.

“We should question and or change traditions we have inherited that do not work in our best interest, or those that are explicitly or implicitly demeaning to us,” he said.

“Hopefully, it will encourage some people who lobby for the eradication of symbols of oppression, like the statue of Columbus, or some of those titles that litter our governance.”

He noted that the “traditional play format is invested with elements of script writing, suggesting an experimentation, plotting a path beyond the stage”.

Mr Nairn received his BA in English from the University of Windsor, Canada, in 1986. He has has taught high school English language and literature for 32 years in the Bahamas. As the founder of Glen Nairn’s Tutoring Service he also prepares students for the Bahamas Junior Certificate Examination and the Bahamas General Certificate Examination, and teaches English as a second language.

From 2006 to 2009, he was a copy editor and columnist for The Nassau Guardian. His column focused on social and cultural issues.

he girl who can’t remember will be forced to seek answers she doesn’t want to find in “Blame,” Jeff Abbott’s latest thriller.

Two years earlier, a car crash killed her friend David and left Jane Norton with no memory of that fateful evening.

At first her friends and members of the community were sympathetic, but when a note was discovered in her handwriting that appeared to be a suicide note, she was shunned and vilified. On the anniversary of the incident, she receives a cryptic message that says, “I know what really happened. I know what you don’t remember.”

At first Jane is hopeful, but soon she discovers that whoever knows what occurred that evening doesn’t have her best interests at heart. Graffiti is scrawled on David’s tombstone, and one of the rescuers that evening barely escapes from her home after an arsonist tries to kill her.

Jane cannot recall the events of that night, and the more she learns, the more confused she becomes. Can those she considered her friends be trusted? What prompted her to jump in a car with a friend, but not her boyfriend with possible aspirations to leave town together?

The deceptions and secrets run rampant as a young woman seeks answers. David died that night, but Jane’s life ended as well.

Abbott does a stellar job of juggling various conspiracies and story points to keep the reader on edge and baffled up to the last page. And the payoff is glorious.

Sasha Dunn showcases Bahamas’ evolution in two new videos

hings have been a bit quiet around Sasha Dunn, one of the country’s most prolific music artists, but for good reason.

“The projects that have been consuming the majority of my time is the ‘100 Pounds’ mixtape and ‘Bossalini’, a mini series,” he told Tribune Weekend.

In between putting the finishing touches on his mix tape and producing a new show, the veteran member of the musical conglomerate known as the Vendetta Group has also released videos for his two latest singles, “Big Bang Theory” and “100 Pounds”.

The songs were released in the last three months and have both received encouraging feedback from fans posting on social media sites.

“Big Bang Theory” features a speech given by “Back to Africa” leader Marcus Garvey which tells of the struggles of black people over the years around the world.

“The song itself encompasses this single message. Going into the making of this video, the concept was to show Nassau as it was and what the country has

now evolved into through rebellion. The ‘Big Bang Theory’ video was directed by myself and Seven of Leet Studios. The goal of the video was to show the evolution of the Bahamas through rebellion and change of thought,” the singer said.

Meanwhile, “100 Pounds”, which features Bob Dope, showcases the current state of the inner city in the Bahamas.

Due to Sasha’s affinity with the Soldier Road community, he decided to shoot the entire video in the area. It was directed by the artist himself along with Andrew Bowe of East Point Studios.

“The goal of releasing both videos at the same time was to do a yin and yang type of feel where the audience gets to see both sides of the paradigm, the completely positive and I guess what you can call negative, but it’s not negative entirely,” he explained.

Additionally, the artist said he has become committed to visuals.

“More and more videos are on their way and a very special project that is set to be released in November,” he added.

Both the “100 Pounds” and “Big Bang Theory” videos can be viewed on Sasha’s YouTube channel and on his Facebook page.

Reggae sensation Sizzla a hit with Nassau audience

HE inclement weather proved to be a non-factor as fans of Sizzla Kalonji came out in droves to see the Jamaican music sensation present his unique brand of reggae live in concert last week.

Known for hits like “Solids as a Rock”, “Dry Cry”, and “Woman I Need You”, Sizzla left Bahamian fans thoroughly satisfied as the first artist for the year to be featured in Heineken’s Bahamian edition of the “Live Your Music” concert series.

Organisers said concert-goers were also entertained all night with music by DJ J-Mac, DJ Xtra Large and Jimbo & Chronix. Additionally, there was live painting by Bahamian Icon Award winners 3rilogy, and the Heineken Spin-To-Win wheel gave guests the chance to win free Heineken branded prizes.

“Though the ultimate highlight was when Sizzla blazed the stage with a medley of top hits from past

and present works,” said Barrington Archer, Heineken brand manger.

The concert series is a global campaign by Heineken that celebrates music fans.

“The Heineken ‘Live Your Music’ platform was built on the collective passion for experiencing music. We want to facilitate those experiences with well-thought-out music events, and feel that we are on the right track judging from the receptiveness of Saturday’s crowd. As a brand, Heineken continues to evolve, seeking to be creative in the creation of unforgettable experiences for the Bahamas time and time again,” Mr Archer told Tribune Weekend.

Heineken will also host a series of DJ competitions, with the first being held tonight at Carmichael Wholesale and the second at Best Deals, also known as Kirki’s, on July 28.

“We know that when it comes to great music you don’t just listen to it, you life it. ‘Live Your Music’ creates the music inspiration that lies at the heart of our daily lives. It’s our aim to craft shareable and memorable moments for all,” said Mr Archer.

Other internationally known artists are expected to follow in Sizzla’s footsteps and perform for the concert series in the Bahamas in the near future.

Cara says: “Can’t go wrong with a basic black and white combo in my opinion. I mean, the sleeves are a bit full and it seems like she can use them to take flight, but the overall look is crisp and clean and her accessories jazz it up and provide some needed sparkle.”

Karin says: “Was she going to a slumber party right after? This is like the cheap robe you get in a nightgown combo from Vanity Fair. And it had to be shiny! This looks hideously cheap, ill-fitting and tacky. I choose to believe that she lost a bet and had to wear this.”

Cara says: “How awful! It looks like an ill-fitting bathrobe; just not cute at all. I mean, it looks like she didn’t even get dressed to attend the event. And even though the shoes are a little cute, the horrid robe just erases any hope of attractiveness.”

Karin says: “A first look she looks like a pretty peacock. But at second glance it doesn’t quite hold up. It looks a bit amateurish in how it’s put together, but still pretty. Maybe like a Project Runway creation? The black lace shorts are cute though.”

Cara says: “This dress has quite a bit going on. On the plus side, I love the colour.

I love the neckline and the flow of the skirt. I do think the bodice is really cute and it’s different. But I am not sure how I feel about the lace shorts. I like them, then I don’t. And I just don’t know how I feel about the knot on top of her head.”

Karin says: “Apparently, she’s the movie’s raunchy breakout star, so I was expecting something a bit more exciting. The dress is fine. A bit boring, but fine. She just needed some bling, a better hairdo and some bolder makeup.”

Cara says: “This dress is simple and elegant and very classy on her. I love the bejewelled neckline. My only thing is that her hair is a bit boring, and I get that she probably wanted to keep her accessories simple and let the neckline do the talking, but I thought the earrings got a bit lost in the look.”

he French cosmetics company L’Oreal last Friday reintroduced itself to the Bahamian market with both old and new brands, and with products for natural hair and deeper skin tones.

Beneath pink florescent lights, tables in the Meliá Nassau Beach Resort’s ballroom were decked out in gold and stacked with makeup, hair and skin care products.

L’Oréal Bahamas was the host of the event designed for top makeup artists, bloggers and social media influencers.

Guests showed up in their cocktail attire and were treated to drinks, sweets from Baker’s Lane, gifts, a photo booth and live entertainment.

Under the theme “The Awakening”, guests were able to visit individual booths and interact with beauty representatives. Products were available to touch, smell and try on as the professionals gave live demonstrations.

The L’Oréal brands on display were L’Oréal Paris, Maybelline New York, Garnier, and new to the Bahamas, NYX Cosmetics.

According to the brand’s representatives, the L’Oréal brand targets all ethnicities and has stepped up in

L’Oréal said it is also in tune with the natural hair movement and has created various products for kinks and curls of all varieties. The Extraordinary Clay Masks and Garnier Whole Hair Blends shampoo and conditioner are two products that were featured at the event.

L’Oréal Brand Manager Leann Albury said that although many people were unaware of their goal to cater to women of colour in the past, she has seen an increase in the number of

Bahamians taking an interest in their products.

“There has been a preconceived notion that the brands weren’t created for people of colour, and now we’re seeing the smaller beauty supply stores taking on our products and makeup artists using them,” said Ms Albury.

“It’s proof that we’re catching onto it and realising that we can use these brands too because they have products made for us as well.”

Ms Albury is hopeful that by next year every beauty store in the Bahamas will be selling at least one of the L’Oréal brands.

In attendance at the event were many popular Bahamian beauty bloggers. Among them Ianthia Smith and Brittany Kyss, who talked to Tribune Weekend about what it means for companies like L’Oréal to take notice of their work.

“As of recent, bloggers have been recognised and actually appreciated in the Bahamas,” said Ms Smith. “We are a real industry and I think people are picking up that we are valuable in getting their brands and products out there.”

Ms Kyss chimed in, saying: “I started blogging in 2012 and I kind of felt slighted when I would come home and realise that bloggers in the Bahamas don’t get as much recognition.

“It’s heart-warming now to see brands recognising us because we are valuable and companies make a lot of money out of bloggers, YouTubers and content creators in general.”

L’Oréal’s main goal for the night was what Ms Albury describes as “waking up” the excitement surrounding their brands under Lowe’s Wholesale distribution.

She hopes that more people will appreciate the brand for what it is and see its diversity.

“L’Oréal is not just for one type of woman, it’s for every woman,” she added.

ome weeks I pick a theme for the podcast column and find shows that suit. But this week’s came together thanks to a shout-out on Twitter, and still a theme came together. Comedy and film are at the heart of this week’s listening.

Everyone I Know

A fairly new podcast on the block, this sees two brothers and a guest shoot the breeze on various topics. It’s a welcome newcomer to the podcast scene, too, as these guys are good company.

As with many a comedy podcast – in fact all the shows here today – you can expect some swearing amid the chat, so not for younger ears.

The format here is to take three topics and discuss them, and the crew in the most recent episode focused on, well, social acceptability. For example, is it acceptable to start checking your

your headphones in when going around a store? And just what is the right thing to do at a concert to avoid annoying the people next to you?

It’s a light, breezy listen, doesn’t overstay its time, and I give it a thumbs up. It’s only four episodes old, so I look forward to coming back to it in future to see how it builds.

Sift

Sift is a show that combines a bit of comedy, a bit of philosophy and a bit of... baking?

The show I listened to focused on the movie director Alfred Hitchcock – and I have to say there’s something of a contrast between the two hosts.

One took on the role of researcher and dug up all kinds of information about Hitchcock, his tempestuous relationships with his leading ladies, his role in creating propaganda films during the war, the highs and lows of his career... and the other said “Wow” and “I didn’t know that” a lot.

I also got a little irritated by the number of times one or the other host said they hadn’t seen certain Hitchcock movies that they are talking about on the show – such as ‘Rebecca’, ‘Rear Window’ or ‘Psycho’. It seems a bit strange to want to tell your audience about movies that they may well have seen but that you haven’t. And no, the remake of ‘Psycho’ doesn’t count for purposes of talking about Hitchcock.

That said, the detail that host Liz Wilshin gets into is interesting, and she carries the show, drawing you in and talking about all kinds of things she’s found in her research. She’s also the baker, and her recipe for Bates Motel Pillow Mints is a clever thought.

One other thing the show could do with is better production – the sound quality isn’t great, and a sequence playing the famous “Who’s On First?” skit from Abbott and Costello is barely able to be made out.

It’s still fairly early days for the podcast – which is 12 episodes old – but improving that sound quality for starters ought to be high on the hosts’ to-do list.

More Gooder Than

The best show of the bunch this week also happens to be the oldest, having recently passed its first anniversary.

More Gooder Than focuses on chat about movies – with hosts Chris Braaten, Donnie Carr and Cory Saceaux taking apart pop culture and challenging one another over movies, characters, directors and so on to decide who is the... most goodest. And yes, I cringe typing that phrase, but that’s the point, I’m sure!

The episode I listened to I’ll freely accept might not travel the best, but it looked at movies that featured the Bakersfield area in California. So the three movies looked at are the Robin Williams movie ‘The Best of Times’, the Arnold Schwarzenegger action flick ‘The Running Man’ and Tom Hanks’ ‘Castaway’.

You might not remember ‘The Best of Times’, a sentimental movie about a man wanting to relive his high school football days as a way of putting some spice back into his life, and it’ll be no surprise that this is the movie that ends up being... less goodest.

These guys clearly know their stuff – and there’s an easy banter between the crew. Apparently, the show came about from one of them saying during regular gaming sessions that they wished they recorded some of their chats, and you can tell this is a bunch of friends talking about things they love.

It’s a fun show to listen to, and insightful too as they pick up on all kinds of little details about the movies they’re talking about. So much so that they make me want to go back and rewatch ‘The Running Man’... and I hated that movie!

Fertilizer When it comes to soil, the Bahamas has to contend with nutrient-poor deposits. But never fear, says Jack Hardy, there is a wide array of fertilizers on the market to help you grow whatever you have set your mind to.

M

y old friend John Hedden – agriculture gadfly extraordinaire – loves to shock audiences when giving seminars by categorically stating: “The Bahamas has no soil.” A little theatrical for effect, but John is uncomfortably close to the truth.

The land mass of the Bahamas sits on top of undersea mountains and is largely composed of oolitic limestone, wonderful for making reefs, but sadly short of the mark for growing purposes. Our soil is very alkaline and very young in geological terms. It will no doubt improve over the next few million years.

Gardeners can increase their chances of healthy crops by amending the existing soil with natural additives – mainly compost – or with bags of soil and peat moss from the United States and Canada that have the bonus of weed seeds that are not native to our islands.

A good fertile Bahamian garden often has a lot of America in it.

Plants receive energy from the sun through a process called photosynthesis. The first set of leaves that appear above ground contain nutrients to boost the seedling while its roots are expanding and beginning to absorb further nutrients from the soil.

Thereafter the growing plants rely upon you, the gardener, to provide a diet with the necessary elements for healthy growth and development.

This can be done by composting plant material or mature animal waste. The regular backyard gardener may not have time to develop natural fertilizers so relies on chemicals bought from the local nursery or hardware store. Do not feel bad about this. The element compounds that feed our plants must be in a certain condition in order to be available to the plant and that condition is similar whether the source is plants, animals, or processed minerals.

Chemical fertilizers come in three main forms: granular for applying to the surface of the soil, liquid for spraying both foliage and soil, and time-release for use with container-grown plants. The three most important elements for most plants are nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium and the percentage of these elements – NPK – gives the fertilizer its name: 6-6-6, 8-6-4, et cetera.

Nitrogen deals mostly with foliage growth while phosphorous promotes sturdy roots, flowers, fruits and seeds.

Potassium builds strong stems and assists with the movement of water through plants. It also boosts flowering and fruiting. These three elements are needed in the greatest quantity but calcium, magnesium and sulphur are also important even though smaller quantities are required. There are many other elements that are important but only need to be present in very small quantities and these are called trace elements or micronutrients and include copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, boron, silicon, cobalt and vanadium. It is suspected that a few other elements assist particular plants but are not needed by all.

Granular fertilizers are sold in large plastic bags and are the cheapest according to bulk. Rain and watering dissolve the salts in the mix and make them available to the roots of plants.

the surface of the soil around plants and it is a good idea to work it lightly into the top inch or so of the soil to prevent it being washed away from plants.

Liquid fertilizers come as soluble crystals and Miracle-Gro is the leading brand. The product is sold in differing element ratios (and colours) for its purpose: vegetables, palms, flowering plants, lawns, roses, orchids, tomatoes, etc. Liquid fertilizers are wonderful for seedlings as – mixed properly – they will not burn young roots. They also provide a boost to plants beginning to produce fruits. That said, liquid fertilizers are an expensive way to feed your plants but very useful for small gardens.

Time-release fertilizers are initially expensive but because of their construction are almost indispensable to growing plants in containers. Granular fertilizers leave a salt residue that builds up over time and eventually poisons container soil. The rate of release of nutrients from time-release capsules is such that the roots are able to absorb nutrients very efficiently. The capsules only use the finest of element compounds so salt build up is minimal, almost negligible. Osmocote is the leading brand of time-release fertilizer and if you have not used it before you may be surprised at how little is needed to be effective in feeding your plants.

Which fertilizer should you use? All of them. Use granular fertilizer on your open flower and vegetable gardens, time-release fertilizer in your contain-

ers, and liquid fertilizer to boost seedling growth.

When fertilizer of any sort is applied to our natural soil, not all of it can be used by plants. The high alkalinity of our soil prevents fertilizers from being as effective as they should be.

The best way to understand this is to consider the washing machine. Because our water is stored in our soil it also is alkaline, or ‘hard’. Hard water does not react with soap and detergents in the same way ‘soft’ or slightly acidic will. Some households invest in water softeners and no doubt end up with cleaner clothes. Treating soil is a little harder. We must apply as much compost or neutral soil as possible around our plants and lower the alkalinity to make our fertilizer applications more effective. An application of sulphur powder helps reduce the alkalinity of soil. Sequestrene, a chelated iron developed for use in very alkaline soil, acts as a catalyst and helps fertilizers achieve their full potential.

One last word of advice. I recommend you mix commercial garden soil and conditioners such as commercial cow manure and compost into our native soil but I do not recommend using native soil at all in containers, even when mixed with imported soil. Use potting mix or potting soil alone and you know you have a neutral growing medium that is neither alkaline nor acid.

‘Girls Trip’ a wonderfully hilarious destination GIRLS TRIP RUNNING TIME: 122 MINS

Because the film was actually shot during the Essence Festival, there are countless cameos. Look for Mariah Carey, Maxwell, Ava DuVernay, Terry McMillan, Iyanla Vanzant, Morris Chestnut, Faith Evans, Common, Diddy, Ne-Yo, Doug E Fresh and many others.

This film delivers for all adult audiences. Regardless of your race or gender, you’ll be laughing all the way home.

Besson wouldn’t acquire the rights for another 10 years. It wasn’t until he visited James Cameron on the set of “Avatar” that he realised a film adaptation of “Valerian and Laureline” was even possible, technologically speaking.

And they’ve taken their time with it. And he found his perfect leads in two burgeoning stars: Cara Delevingne for Laureline and Dane DeHaan for Valerian.

As far as the money goes, Besson isn’t concerned. With international sales, he says the film is 90 per cent covered.

“The risk is more psychological than the money.

The risk is if we fail than you lose your reputation,” Besson says. “The money risk is almost zero.”

Besson-Silla jumps in: “People are a little bored with sequels.”

“There are so many sequels,” continues Besson.

“People are little tired of so many superheroes. At least we’re fresh!”

There are no brothers in arms, no flashbacks to simpler times and pretty wives and girlfriends left behind, no old men in situation rooms pontificating about politics or helping with exposition. There’s no talk of Hitler, or Germans or battlefields or trauma or mothers. In fact, there’s hardly any talk at all, or, for that matter, even any characters in the traditional sense.

But don’t be mistaken: Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” is a stone cold masterpiece.

It’s a stunningly immersive survival film told in 106 thrillingly realised minutes. Nolan puts the viewer right in the action whether it’s on the beach with 400,000 men queued up and waiting for a rescue that may never come, on the waters of the English Channel in the little civilian ship headed into hostile waters with only an aging man and two teenage boys aboard, or in the air above in the two lone Spitfires that are quickly running out of fuel.

I’ve never experienced anything quite like “Dunkirk’s” intoxicating immediacy. The screen and images envelope you with urgency, dread and moments of breathtaking beauty and grace as you wait with the soldiers, as the title card at the beginning says, for deliverance.

The story begins on the ground, with a young soldier, Tommy (newcomer Fionn Whitehead) wandering the deserted streets of Dunkirk looking for water and a place to relieve himself.

ground reminding the soldiers of something they’re already well aware of — that they’re surrounded.

Nolan follows Tommy back to the beach where soldiers stand in long lines that stretch to the water, where no boats approach. His part is nearly silent, his motivations unknown.

They are all haunted shells, stripped of meaningful weapons and a military purpose. He and the rest just know they need to get off the beach at any cost.

We accompany Tommy as he tries to achieve that objective which eludes him with almost comic frequency. He’s the unluckiest lucky fellow out there.

Occasionally we get the sobering perspective of the higher ups, compliments of the great Kenneth Branagh as Commander Bolton.

In the air there are the two Spitfire pilots, Farrier (played by Tom Hardy, whose face is once again largely obscured but who can act circles around many of his contemporaries even with just the use of his eyes and eyebrows) and Collins (Jack Lowden). They get to be the lofty, classical heroes of war films past as they shoot down the enemy. Hardly has a film ever made you feel as in the moment as this.

And on the sea, the three civilians, Mr Dawson (Mark Rylance), Peter

(Tom Glynn-Carney) and George (Barry Keoghan) who, like so many during the Dunkirk evacuation, took it upon themselves to captain their own small vessel and journey into war dressed in their seaside knits and armed only with lifejackets and blankets to help save their country’s stranded men. They’re the beating heart of film, especially when pitted against a shell shocked soldier (Cillian Murphy) who is determined to stop them from going back to Dunkirk.

These narratives intertwine and loop

back and repeat from different vantage points with stunning effectiveness — never seeming redundant or dull.

Nolan finds suspense at every angle, and ramps up the tension with the help of Zimmer’s ticking score. While, there might not be character arcs to speak of, the performances are first-rate nonetheless (even pop star Harry Styles, who might just have another viable career option).

See it big and then see it again.

Ayers Rock, awe-inspiring and sacred Sir Christopher Ondaatje goes on what turns out to be a spiritual journey to the Australian Outback.

I

n the beginning of the 20th century one of the only ways to get to Ayers Rock was to take “The Ghan” – the old train from Adelaide to Alice Springs (made famous after Neville Shute’s extraordinary 1950 story ‘A Town Like Alice about the Second World War’) and then drive the 350 kilometres southwest to the giant sandstone magnetic mound in the Northern Territory of Australia.

But the train was always late; always.

Sometimes two minutes, sometimes two hours, two days, even two months.

You had to hear it coming and then stand at one of the wilderness platforms and stop the train if you wanted to get on.

I was told a story by a coach driver of a female passenger on the train who spoke to the train guard as it approached one of the stops. She old him that she was pregnant and that she thought she was going to have the baby. The guard looked her up and down and said, “Lady, a woman in your condition shouldn’t be travelling on this train.” To which she replied, “Lis-

I did not go to Alice Springs by train.

Instead, I flew the 1,800 miles from Sydney to Ayers Rock, where there is now a small airport, and then three days later I took the six and a half hour coach ride from Ayers Rock to Alice Springs before flying back to Sydney.

It was my first taste of the Australian Outback.

Ayers Rock, or to use its Aboriginal name, Uluru, is located in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. The incredible rock formation is over 986 feet high and five miles around. It also extends one and a half miles into the ground. It is higher than the Eiffel Tower and even higher than the Chrysler Building in New York. Actually, it is the second largest monolith in the world (after Mount Augustus, also in Australia), but there is nothing quite

so identifiable anywhere, and you can never be properly prepared for your first sight of the enormous solitary red hulk towering out of the sandy Australian scrubland.

Ernest Giles and William Grosse were the first European explorers to this area, and although Giles saw the nearby giant rock outcroppings of Kata Tjuta in 1872, it was Grosse who actually discovered Uluru the following year and named it Ayers Rock after Sir Henry Ayers, the Premier of New South Wales. Five-hundred million years ago it was part of the ocean floor, and archaeological findings indicate that humans settled in this area more than 10,000 years ago. Europeans, however, only arrived in the Australian western desert in the 1870s.

I was overawed by what I saw and what I witnessed. History is important and the religious significance of this monstrous arkose sandstone is enormous. Pastoralists tried to establish themselves in the surrounding area but interaction between the local Arangu and white people became more frequent and more violent. Then, between 1918 and 1921, large areas in the Northern Territory were declared as Aboriginal reserves under the Aboriginals Ordinance.

Tourists arrived in 1936 and in the

1940s and 50s tour bus services began.

The Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park was created, and on October 26, 1985, the Australian Government returned ownership of Uluru to the local Pitjantjatjara Aborigines with the condition that they lease it back to the National Parks for 99 years and that it would be jointly managed. The Aboriginal community of Montijulu is situated near the western end of Uluru – 11 miles away from the present town of Yulara whose population has now grown to over 3,000. It is just outside the park.

There is considerable tension. Although there are over 400,000 visitors a year, the local community has officially requested that visitors respect the sacred status of Uluru by not climbing the rock. In 1983, the former prime minister of Australia, Bob Hawke, promised to respect the local request that climbing Uluru would be prohibited, but reneged on his promise.

The climb crosses an important dreaming track which has been a cause of sadness and distress among its traditional owners. But they cannot now prohibit climbing as it is such a popular attraction for the many local and foreign tourists. It is a very steep climb, and there are several deaths a year, mainly from heart failure. Knowing that I was writing an article on Uluru,

Historians note that his lasting memorial is in the name “Ayers Rock”, now reverted to its traditional name, Uluru. many indigenous and local expert guides were very kind and helpful and, although the Rock was opened for climbing and I was tempted, I respected their requests not to do so. The actual climb takes about two hours, up a steep, demanding path that follows the traditional route taken by ancestral Mala men. Sometimes the heat of the day can climb to over a 100 degrees Fahrenheit – a fearsome experience.

As it was explained to me, Aborig-

inal people believe that the ground below the rock is hollow and that the land was created in Tjukurpa, or Dreamtime, but has nothing to do with dreams. Uluru is sacred and was created by ancestors who could change shape from animal to human and back again, and who created mountains and rivers and waterholes, and whose experiences have been and are still recorded. They believe that they can be affected by the energy left in the

ground.

Tjukurpa was in the past but it is the Aboriginal people’s present and future religion. It lays down the law for human behaviour. Some understanding of this religion and the organisation of Aboriginal tribes (a complicated business) gives the visitor a much greater appreciation of the sacred quality of the large sandstone rock formation with its lack of jointing and where the strata are nearly vertical - dipping to the west at 85 degrees. The surface has, over time, eroded creating a multitude of hollows, crevices and scars – all representing a physical feature of Aboriginal ancestral activity, history or

learning. It is a photographer’s Valhalla. All these physical features, whatever their form or appearance, animate or inanimate, is the Tjukurpa. It is not a creation myth, per se, but a myth of formation.

There are other absorbing things to do, instead of the climb. The base walk is almost 10 kilometres, and there is a track which circumnavigates the mighty Rock and will take you from three to four hours passing caves, paintings, sandstone folds and geological abrasions. One discovers ancient formations and legends along the way and it is hard not to appreciate the

spiritual significance of the Rock. The Kuniya walk, less than a mile from the base on the southern side, leads to the permanent Mutitjulu waterhole – a very photogenic and peaceful destination past some interesting rock formations. There is also the Mala walk to the spectacular Kantu Gorge – a vertical crack in the vast rock face. It is about two kilometres from the base of the climbing point, and is a fascinating walk, filled with local lore. It is also near the old camping area, where on August 17, 1980, a dingo or wild dog snatched a nine-week old baby, causing a sensational trial where her mother was charged with murder. Although eventually exonerated, the baby’s body was never found. Dingoes are still seen skulking around the monolith, but camping now is not allowed.

You will also experience something of the arid red scrub desert and the dry resinous spinifex (or porcupine grass). You won’t see any kangaroos or emus, but you will not be able to ignore the feel of the desert where the persistent wind has swept the sand into endless rows of dunes. Ancient, hardy trees and tough woody shrubs have somehow survived in this extraordinary landscape – and it is beautiful.

The Ayers Rock experience is awe-inspiring, but is important to stay away from crowds.

The “Sounds of Silence” is an organised dinner under the stars which follows a dramatic sunset viewing where one can watch the colours of the rock change from bright red to tangerine and finally to a dark purple. However, it was far too crowded. Although I did enjoy sipping a full-bodied Australian Merlot and sampling emu tartare, grilled crocodile, and a surprisingly tasty kangaroo stew. The “Desert Awakening” tour (approximately four hours) the next morning was a much better experience. Only a handful of people travelled to a secluded sand dune at 5.30am, well before the sun breached the horizon. As we were served a traditional bushman’s breakfast and a cup of billy tea we watched the sun rise and then had a long three-hour hike through the Kantu Gorge with its cathedral-like proportions.

It was a spiritual experience.

Warning: There flies are everywhere. They are forever present. Make sure you purchase one of the ingenious, small light-weight mesh acrylic fly nets that you can pull over your head and restrict visibility only a little. You can fit your hat (essential) over the fly net. It will save you endless energy and you will not have to constantly swipe away the persistent insects looking for moisture. Beware too, Australia has an enormous number of very poisonous snakes. Don’t bother them and they won’t bother you.

But keep a look-out for them and don’t stray off the beaten track.

It is sometimes very windy, so don’t go chasing your hat off the edge of some cliff or rock height because you may get the hat but it may be the end of your trip. Drink lots of water. Do not allow yourself to get dehydrated. It is very dry. Take water with you wherever you go out to the Rock or walkabouts. Have sunglasses and sun protection cream. You are in one of the driest deserts in the world.

Also have good walking shoes; desert boots are good and called that for exactly that reason. So are well-built trainers or running shoes – but the convenient rubber slip-ons are useless and dangerous.

They will melt on the rocks and may give third degree burns on your feet, particularly if you are brave enough to attempt the Uluru climb and are scrambling on the hot red surface. In the evenings, before sunset, the wind comes up and it gets cooler, much cooler. So be prepared. Take a good thick woollen sweater or warm wind-breaker.

Always be comfortable and use common sense. Being knowledgeable is being well prepared. And don’t try to do it on your own. Use an official guide. Do not try to be too adventurous. The Ulaquru desert can be a dangerous place. Uluru is 27 kilometres from the Julara town and hotel centre, and Kata Tjuta is another 40 kilometres away. Use official transport and book early through a recognised tour guide before you set out into the Northern Territory. Reliable planning is absolutely essential.

The Seagull, a Bahamian icon

I

n 1890, when Charles B Cory published his book ‘Birds of Bahamas’ he did not mention the British Seagull, and none of the newer books on the subject mentions this venerable creature that found its way to the Bahamas in the middle of the 20th century and quickly spread its wings throughout our islands.

The reason for this is simple. The British Seagull is not a bird, it’s an outboard motor that, like it’s fine-feathered namesake, made a lot of noise.

After reading my article about Carl Brice’s Central Garage, my friend Tommy Roberts reminded me that one of the things that Central Garage introduced to the Bahamas was this simplest of two-stroke outboard motors, which quickly gave meaning to the word ubiquitous.

Whatever island I travelled to, there were noisy little boats with a Seagull.

Looking back to my first ride with a Seagull, I remember my surprise when the young skipper turned the tiller through a half-circle to make the dinghy go backwards. The Seagull didn’t have gears that needed shifting.

Atop the single-cylinder engine sat the magneto, with the gas tank bolted to the back. There was no fuel pump, because the designer used cost-free gravity to feed the mixture of gas and (quite a lot of) oil, through a clear plastic tube with a U-bend (rather like the ‘trap’ under the kitchen sink), to the simple carburetor, bolted on the side.

specifically approved in the owner’s manual, but even at full-power the boat would not move at a tremendous rate-of-knots. This well-built motor was rugged and could be depended on to get you to where you wanted to go. Seagull outboards were utilitarian in nature with a relatively slow-turning prop, and so were ideal for use in dinghies and such.

The brand fell victim to modern emission standards and I haven’t seen a British Seagull in the Bahamas for many years, but around the world many are still in service and spare parts are still produced and marketed, so it is highly likely that boats in the Bahamas are still powered by this creature that Charles B Cory never knew about.

On the internet, I found an interesting video at https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=-adwm9k77pY, that shows a Seagull that had not run in 40 years, but ran (noisily of course) after just one pull of the cord.

A long-time user once told me that the only time his Seagull stopped on him was the day it fell off his dinghy and he had to dive it up (it wasn’t very heavy) from the bottom of the sea. He washed it off with fresh water, let it dry, then cranked it – and it started.

The Bahamian Project

I

t was a great honour for me and for the Bahamas Humane Society when I received an e-mail a few months back asking me if I would be part of this year’s Bahamian Project. Seldom are animal advocates or animal rescuers chosen for recognition. My personal theory is that we are not glamorous enough. Of late my and the BHS’ cup runneth over as I was first chosen to be a Red Dress Soirée lady and now one of the Bahamian Project faces.

The Bahamian Project is brainchild of Duke and Ana Lisa Wells. Their first exhibition was all in black and white, and took place in 2013 at the National Art Gallery. The idea behind it is to document for prosperity notable and worthy Bahamians for the generations to come. There is a brief bio with each photograph that, I understand, will be expanded when they get to print the long awaited coffee table book.

It is such a great idea to have a visual in this day and age, where frequently reading has gone by the wayside.

Young people can see the faces and link them to the deeds or events.

I asked Duke why he started the Bahamian Project with only black and white photographs, but now has moved on to colour photos. Mine is in colour.

Here is what Duke told me: “My photographic style is usually classic black and white studio portraiture. Since I photographed all the original images, they were all in black and white. When I invited other photographers to join the Project we thought it best to allow each photographer the opportunity to create images in their own style. Many have chosen to shoot in colour and on location. This adds variety to the image collection.”

I was photographed by Duke’s dynamic wife Ana Lisa Wells, and we had a wonderful time with lots of puppies running all around the place at the shelter. We had several volunteer

kids to help us as there was always one naughty puppy who would take off in the opposite direction. I was so happy that they chose to display the photo of me shown here, starring two very sweet and young Potcake puppies who were awaiting adoption. I hope their new families see this photograph and appreciate that their pup is a superstar.

In addition to the big exhibition in 2013 at the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas (Villa Doyle) and the exhibition currently at the Central Bank, they have had several smaller exhibitions. They intend to have smaller shows that can be moved around the islands and also to Bahamian Embassy’s and High Commissions over the next few years. Bring the Bahamian people face-to-face with other nations, so to speak. There will be another major exhibition in 2018, but its location is still to be determined.

Popopstudios were the original collaborator of the Bahamian Project, as was the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas. For nine years, Duke and Ana Lisa were managing directors of the Popopstudios, but back in September they resigned the position to be able to focus solely on the Bahamian Project and their own personal artwork. They both still maintain separate studios at Popop.

any people, when they’re considering adoption, focus on the puppies, but older dogs have special charm, too. Maddock is a lovely senior Chow who came to the Bahamas Humane Society with her brother Riley. Both are looking for homes that will allow them to live out their senior years in style.

Maddock is about 10 years old and would make a good guard dog, keeping your home safe from undesirables.

She’s not that fond of children as she finds them unpredictable, and she’d love to stay with her brother, but that’s not a deal-breaker. Do you have a soft spot in your heart for a senior dog?
