RELIGIOUS NEWS, STORIES AND CHURCH EVENTS
Eleuthera author wants to help readers ‘start over, God’s way’ By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Reporter acadet@tribunemedia.net EVEN as a child growing up in Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera, Stacy Petty Rodgers, pictured, was always writing poems to express her feelings. Over the years she became an avid reader and enjoyed encouraging others through her writings. But for the past several years her writing has also had a higher purpose. “On November 10, 2017, the Lord spoke to me and said, ‘I want you to write.’ A little confused at first as to what I was going to write about, He then made it crystal clear to me His instructions. He said, ‘I want you to write and encourage my people.’ So I’ve been writing morning devotionals, encouragements and quotes ever since that day,” said Stacy. In an interview with Tribune Religion, the mother-of-four (and grandmother of two) talked about the upcoming launch of her newest project, “Try It Over God’s Way” - a 30-day devotional filled with quotes, prayers and powerful readings. Stacy said the book is dedicated to all those people who are faced with emotional, spiritual or physical storms that they are trying to overcome. The book, she hopes, will motivate readers to try it over God’s way. Trained professionally in customer service, Stacy’s passion, she said, “lies in leaving an impression on every person that I come in contact with.” “The motivation for writing this book stemmed from being obedient to the voice of God. I was motivated to carry out this assignment because there may be a few persons God wants to reach through this book,” said Stacy.
She felt particularly moved to write the book following the devastation caused in her life by Hurricanes Matthew in 2016 and Hurricane Dorian in 2019. She started to feel a sense of hopelessness, fearing she would never catch a break and would have to restart her life every few years. “I felt as if every time I saw a light at the end of the tunnel, darkness came and covered that speck of light, until one day I began to write and put a plan in place for my life. With everything I wrote down, I knew it could not be accomplished without God and His way. So I wrote this note to God saying, ‘I will try it over again your way, God, because it seems as if my way always failing’,” she said. “So I’m excited to share the stories in the book on how persons in the Bible did things God’s way and how He exalted (them) and allowed them to overcome. “There is definitely a specific message in my book I want the world at large to
know. On day six in the devotional I speak about pain, process, and purpose. For the past 16 months, the entire world went through and still is going through a painful process. And because of COVID19, many lives were affected, business doors closed, families were left homeless, relationships fell apart, and church doors closed; we were all at the mercy of God,” said Stacy. In this specific chapter she talks about an internet-age myth that was born on social media. Although it has been debunked, the “The Rebirth of the Eagle” tale has become a modern-day parable. It tells the story of an eagle, who when he reaches the age of 30 finds its physical condition has deteriorated to the point that survival is difficult: its talons lose their flexibility and cannot properly grip prey, its beak becomes dull and bent, and its wing feathers grow thick and heavy, sticking to its chest and impairing its flight. So the bird then retreats to a
mountaintop, where over a five-month period it sequentially knocks off its beak by banging it against a rock, plucks out its talons, and then plucks out its feathers, each stage producing a regrowth of the removed body parts that “renews” the eagle and allows it to live for another 30 to 40 years: “So the message I want everyone to grasp from this book is that even though you may have gone or are still going through a painful period in your lifetime, made many regrettable decisions, made you question yourself, you should never allow your pain to distract you from going through your process, because your process will cause you to fulfil your purpose. Every chapter in this devotional is realistic it’s based on stories in the Bible, and quotes and prayers that were inspired by the Holy Spirit,” said Stacy. The book hasn’t had an official launch yet, but a virtual one is planned for Sunday, August 15. “The feedback I’m truly looking forward is for persons to have their focus shifted back to God, so that He can get all the Glory that belongs to him,” she said. Stacy is also planning to release two more books, one a children’s book and the other her personal testimony over overcoming a “physical and spiritual storm” in her life. In the meantime, she is working with own feeding ministry. “Once a month I go into the streets in New Providence, wherever the Lord would direct me, and serve hot breakfasts to whomever comes. I will be adding a clothing drive to my street ministry to assist more,” said Stacy. “Try It Over God’s Way” will be available from Amazon and in local bookstores soon after its official launch this August.

A Green Castle giant laid to rest MANY Bahamians would never have heard about Lillian “Lilly” Burrows, but this giant of a lady was laid to rest in the quaint settlement of Green Castle on the picturesque isle of Eleuthera from her home Church of St Michael’s and All Angels, where she served as a vibrant member of the Anglican Church Women for many years. The funeral service was reminiscent of a homecoming or regatta, but it was just an occasion to say goodbye to this local heroine and a dedicated mother of an Anglican priest who was called home to her great reward. Lilly Burrows was born on November 26, 1942, in New Providence, but her spiritual navel string was, so to speak, buried in holy baptism on September 29, 1958, in Green Castle. Priests from a cross section of the Diocese came to celebrate the legacy of Lilly Burrows. In attendance was Canon Crosley Walkine Rector of St Matthew’s; Father Ivan ‘Timmy’ Eldon Rector of St Patrick’s Governor’s Harbour; Father Chester Burton, who once an assistant priest in South Eleuthera; Father Colin Saunders Diocesan Resident Architect, and Rev Deacon Alison, dean assistant priest for the Parish of St Luke’s in South Eleuthera. Canon Sebastian
LILLIAN ‘LILLY’ BURROWS Campbell was the celebrant and preacher. For the eulogy, Canon Campbell took his text from the Psalmist who states: “Lord teach us to number our days so we may apply our hearts to wisdom.” He spoke of Lilly’s loyalty to her church, island and husband, former catechist Whitfield Burrows who served at St Michael’s and All Angels and was laid to rest in 2006 in the churchyard next to the sacristy door. Canon Campbell also talked of Lilly was an altruistic person. She gave the best of her time, talents and treasures to the honour and glory of God. She was kind beyond measure whenever there were fundraisers or initiatives for the church; she would be the first to come forward for make her donation, he said. “Many adjectives can be used to describe Lilly but two words cannot be overlooked, she was reliable and resilient.” After the death of her husband, she requested
her daughter Karen to return to Eleuthera to be an emotional support for her. During this time, Lilly found the means of generating funds to affect necessary repairs and maintenance to St Michael and All Angels. Canon Campbell concluded the eulogy by speaking about the “invaluable contribution” Lilly made to the church and community. He described her as someone with an extraordinary range of skills and was a person who exhibited such gifts as grace, patience, wisdom and humour. He also spoke about how Lilly was ecstatic that she lived to see her son, Bradley Miller, be ordained as an Anglican priest. She taught her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to respect other people’s view, respect for the community and to uphold good Christian values. At the culmination of the Eucharistic celebration, clergy members led the procession of altar servers, lay readers, catechists and priests to the church’s graveyard, where Lilly was interred right next to her husband. Many family members and parishioners were teary-eyed but happy to know Lilly had finished her course on earth and now finds rest and refreshment.
