Death Notice Elizabeth (Bette) Claridge

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Elizabeth (Bette) Claridge at the age of 92. Elizabeth Doreen Claridge (née Falloon) passed away peacefully surrounded by her family in her home on Russell Island on June 27th. Mum moved from western Canada to Nassau in 1948 with her husband, William (Bill) Claridge, where they lived life to its fullest for their 50year long marriage. She is and will be deeply missed by their six children, their spouses, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild: Steven (Mary Ann and James), Lesley (Jim, Janet, and Jamie), Brenda (Ellie), Robert (Sharmane, Cecily, Robyn, Wil and Carter), Diane (Charlotte), and Rhonda (Sean and Amelia), and her dear sister Leslie McPhee. She will be lovingly remembered by her many nieces, nephews, other family, and friends in The Bahamas and around the world. Our mother embraced her life in The Bahamas; she loved boating and beaching, dancing soca and merengue, and caring for her beautiful tropical garden. She played an active part in Nassau’s community as a member of the International Garden Club, the Inner Wheel Club and the Canadian Women’s Club. She and Dad moved to Russell Island, Eleuthera in 1986, where she will be remembered by many in Spanish Wells walking the beach and in the sea every day. Mum follows in the path of her parents Jack and Louise Falloon, our father Bill Claridge, her sisters Reta, Lorrie, Jackie, and Elaine and her brother Jim as well as her brothers-in-law Jim, Bob, Ken, Percy, and Garth and niece Margie. A celebration of life will be held at her home on Russell Island at a later date. In memory of Mum (Bette) and in lieu of flowers please send a donation to the Bahamas National Trust, P.O. Box N. 4105, Nassau.

RELIGIOUS NEWS, STORIES AND CHURCH EVENTS

T

HE story is that of a young man who registers at a new school. As with all the “new kids on the block”, no one really knows anything about him. However, he does want to make friends and connect with a few people at the school. In an attempt to try and make friends, he walks up to a group of young guys and says hello. The conversation continues all throughout lunch one day, then another, then another. Pretty soon, it seems, the boys seem have become great friends. One day the new boy is asked if he would rob the principal’s office for $100. After thinking about it, he agrees. Then, the group asks the new boy if he would rob the office for $5. The fella laughs at the idea and asks, “Bruh, you fool, eh? Who you think I is?” One of the guys replies, “The amount of money you do it for doesn’t matter. We already knew what kind of person you were when you agreed to rob the office!” The group walks away from the boy, never to be friends with him again. One of the greatest battles young people ever face is the battle of character. Character amounts to the mental and moral qualities that show exactly who a person is. The development of character is not anything that can be hidden, or certainly not hidden for long. As in our story, there are always hints along the way that you are a person of good character as opposed to someone of bad character. Of course, as parents, teachers, youth leaders and other adult influencers, we train young folks in the direction they should go, but sometimes along the journey, young people go the way of 1 Corinthians 15:33-34, which, though discussing the larger issue of true Christian practice, suggests very simply that “in the presence of bad company, good character can be corrupted.” Here is where the real talk comes in, though. Whenever young people are challenged to explain their choice of character, their response often amounts to excuses instead of reasons. Particularly,

when they know their character is lacking depth. This tells me more often than not you know you’re making the wrong choice in many areas, and that Y\you’re well aware of how your training should be exemplified. Many young people, won’t appreciate me saying this (while “blue-inthe-face” adults are shaking their heads in agreement), but at a certain stage our responsibility is to hold young people responsible for every untruth, every misbehaviour and each choice they make down the wrong path. This is what the training, words of warning and admonition, encouragement to practice positive ideals has been all about. The truth of the matter is very plainly that at the end of the day, and at some point, young people must realise that since they are responsible for their actions, they alone are culpable for the end results. There, I said it! And this statement does not come with ignorance of the temptations young people face. Neither is it said without being acutely aware and sensitive of the many lures out there for young people, ranging from friends, to sex, social media, deviant behavior, and drugs and alcohol. The list is endless. No one, particularly me, would ever suggest that navigating the ins and outs of youth or young adulthood is easy. After all the time spent with traumatised teens, mishandled and abused young women and men, confused children of all ages and walks of life, I know how difficult these years can be. But after all the training and The main lesson admonishing, one can hardly cast blame anywhere except of character is at your own feet when time simply this: You are comes to face the end results the main character of bad character decisions. Parents and other influential persons are guides, showing you the way. But ultimately, the journey, each step – no matter the direction – is yours. Once you make a decision down a path, you have chosen not only who you want to be but the consequences thereof. God bless you this week!

MEDITATION BROADENING OUR HORIZON BY REV ANGELA C BOSFIELD PALACIOUS

MEN and women, Black people and the disabled (among others) have indeed been oppressed over the centuries, but there have always been a few who were able to break out of the stereotypes and assert themselves as individuals made in God’s image, and possessing a multiplicity of gifts and talents which were undeniable. The vision of the kingdom of God described by Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, was liberating for men and the disabled and inclusive of women, to whom His attitude was sensitive, respectful and supportive. The Church The Church has had periods of time when the gospel of love was more theoretical than practical in the area of social justice. However, the spirit of human liberation from the time of the abolition of slavery was taught by, and caught from, the Christian Church. The first schools,

‘ENVY NOT’ BY MINISTER PATRICIA JOHNSON PRATT PRAYERS & INSPIRATION NETWORK

A SIMPLE definition of envy is “to want what belongs to someone else.” But a more thorough definition of envy is “a resentful, dissatisfied desire to have what others have, things like their material possessions, position, title, fortune, achievements, or success.” Galatians 5: 19-21 says that envy is an act of the flesh, and so is sexual

hospitals, orphanages, and outreach were all the gifts of the Church to society. We celebrate that we have indigenous clergy in just about all denominations, and female leadership is widely approved. We have re-fitted our churches to welcome the disabled, though there are always areas for improvement. When it comes to family violence, the church has to be much more audible in the push for prevention, eventual elimination and accountability. The Government As we celebrate our 48th anniversary of independence, we are called to examine just how far we have come as a people. Where are there inequities? We have made education and healthcare universal, and yet there are there who are still “falling through the cracks.” How can we challenge ourselves to broaden our horizons and take advantage of maritime opportunities, for example? Changes in immigration laws regarding the status of foreign spouses of Bahamian women, for example, are still being debated long after the fiftieth anniversary of the women’s suffrage movement, by articulate women in influential professions who are not afraid to speak their minds. We, as a people, are not looking to have women “run the country,” or for men “ to have all the control.” We should be aiming for the best person for the job, having made training, education and financial assistance available to determine just who our best really are. There are certain areas where men have “a corner on certain markets” as is quite visible in Parliament. While there are places where women have too much responsibility thrust upon them without the necessary assistance of men (e.g.

immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, drunkenness, orgies, and the like. But God warns us as He did before, that those who live like this will not inherit His kingdom. As women we sometimes look through the windows of other women’s homes and become intrigued by what we see, having absolutely no idea of the real story behind the not even finished product of what it is we are intrigued by because the Lord is still working on all of us. Sometimes the very same people we allow ourselves to become jealous and envious of are the very ones who are struggling with depression, low selfesteem, addictions, they are dealing with and trying to heal from hurt and betrayal and the feeling of being abandoned or being the rejected stone. Some may be suffering from physical, mental or verbal abuse but because we have become so good at concealing things you will not be able to see this with the natural eye. And so, we look in at their lives from a worldly view and allow this seed

of envy to grow. We begin to compare ourselves to others with the assumption that, that individual has it all together but we don’t, then we begin to complain and say things like it should have been me, I should have been further, I’m more qualified and the list just goes on and on. But I am reminded of the word of God from Jeremiah 29:11 which says,“ ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” I believe that Gods plans for me and for you are specialised and unique to our character. God is strategic and does everything with a purpose in mind. But if we don’t take the time to know God and seek his face concerning his will for our lives, we open the door to seek after what others have and we take on a whole job of trying to become something or someone we are not. Something and someone that we were not created by God to be. But I wonder that if you, if I, if we spend our lives trying to walk in and fill the shoes of others who will walk in and fill

ours or will they be left empty. The plain truth is that the very same person or people we are envying when a check list is carried out, we come out in a better place and in a better off predicament than they are because we have not nor can we begin to endure what they have and their state is far worse than ours. But they wore it well. And so, because we are blinded by outward appearances, we miss this crucial fact. The gist of what I am saying is you are created in the image of God, he has chosen you, not because you are perfect but because he is. God knows that what he has placed on the inside of you is valuable and necessary, he knows that your ending is greater than your beginning, he knows that there is purpose is on the inside of you, but if you continue to have a dissatisfied desire to have what others have and to be who you think others are you will never take hold of what God has specifically designed for you. Envy not, but trust in the Lord, and I believe that has he promised Joshua that he would prosper and be successful so shall you be in the measure sufficient for you.

OCCUPY MENTORSHIP MAKES A DIFFERENCE BY ALESHA CADET | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER | ACADET@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET WHILE pandemic is not over yet, Dr Ricardo Clarke, through his ‘Occupy’ mentorship programme, is finding ways to make a difference during these challenging and unique times. The gospel artist and radio personality’s ‘Occupy’ initiative aims to shape character, teach discipline, foster business acumen and promote health within the youth. Core areas of the programme include education, vocation/trade, entrepreneurship, faith, philanthropy, health, financial literacy, and etiquette. Several events held under the programme’s umbrella have already addressed various areas of “Occupy”. One event in particular, “Mission Male Seed”, was held in 2019 and attracted more than 70 young men from different communities. It featured speakers that helped educate participants on pertinent issues such as conflict resolution, discipline, identity, peer pressure and much more. Last August, he earned his doctorate in Christian Education from the New Covenant University (NCU) in St Augustine, Florida. He told The Tribune that his studies for the degree broadened is skill set and exposed him to new educational products, policies and protocols for students and schools that he can use for his mentorship programme. “In the first quarter of 2021, ‘Occupy’ launched its virtual coaching arm, which allows for private yet professional coaching for those who need a safe space for open dialogue. ‘Occupy’ has already seen persons avail themselves of this benefit in four- to 12-week cycles. Interested persons can e-mail, WhatsApp or call to make inquiry. In March 2021, I formally received a certification as a professional

coach from the (ICF accredited) CLC Institute in San Fernando, California. This, coupled with years in youth development, will see a concentration on crisis, personal development and transformation coaching,” said Dr Clarke. In May this year, Dr Clarke visited Grand Bahama, where he was the keynote speaker at an apprenticeship programme created by New Life Worship Centre. At this event, businesses, entrepreneurs and church members partnered to pass on vital information and skills to assist young people in developing a trade. “One hundred and twenty students were in attendance. It was a pleasure to be a part of this amazing apprenticeship programme where these students are sharpening their vocational and soft skills. They are being equipped in a meaningful way to seize the opportunities beyond the school confines. ‘Occupy’ is honoured to be involved in that,” he said. “Additionally, I was also the speaker at New Life Worship Centre’s Sunday morning worship service, where Nurses Month was celebrated. Chief Nurse-Cheryl Bain and the nurses from the Rand Memorial Hospital were in attendance.” Also in May, an ‘Occupy’ courtesy call was paid to Chief Superintendent Zhivargo Dames. Dr Clarke and Police Chief Superintendent Dames discussed the

opportunities to collaborate on future community outreach projects that target a young demographic. An event in the last quarter of 2021 is proposed. “This month, ‘Occupy’ saw 20 students complete their programme who were also graduates from CW Sawyer Primary School. After weeks of sessions on a variety of topics during the school’s leadership club, they were presented with certificates from ‘Occupy’, along with their diploma

and other awards at their prize giving ceremony. A special gift bag from sponsors was given to the students as a token of appreciation. Principal (Joan) Knowles, and guidance counsellor Ms Sutherland from the school were instrumental in ensuring that the programme continued during the school term,” said Dr Clarke. The ‘Occupy’ mentorship programme can be reachedby sending a WhatsApp message to 426-5094 or e-mailing occupymentorshipprogram@gmail.com.
