CARMICHAEL BIBLE CHURCH CELEBRATES 83RD ANNIVERSARY By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Reporter acadet@tribunemedia.net

F

or the past 83 years, the Carmichael Bible Church has been a shining beacon in the Carmichael Road community. Over the decades, many have been positively impacted by the ministry of this church, and every day, people from all walks of life continue to be touched by the ministry via social media. The anniversary celebration that recently took place received saw an excellent turnout. Highlights included a special service that preached a message of “Still standing after 83 years” by Pastor S Alexander Thompson. Sherwin Stuart, an elder at the church, said what is special about this year’s anniversary celebrations is the fact that members continue to bring focus to the work established by missionaries from the United States who made an indelible impact in the community through their works. “The ministry continues to be a place where persons receive spiritual guidance and social support. We are called by God to minister to the whole man, meet needs through worship, sharing the word, fellowship and sharing of our resources

in a loving environment,” said Mr Stuart. He said the key to the church’s longevity is the commitment to an unwavering dedication to sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.

When asked about the church’s plans moving forward, Mr Stuart said initiatives will include community events to deepen their outreach in general, feeding programmes, and children’s outreach initiatives.

Popularising Christian naturism – Faithful strip down at a South Texas nudist community By JEREMY LINDENFELD Religion News Service (RNS) — Outside the small Texas town of Elsa, a sheet metal fence too tall to see over surrounds a few acres of prime Rio Grande Valley land. In front of the compound’s drab, gray gate, bright orange letters spell out “Nature’s Resort.” The gate opens to reveal a seemingly ordinary community. RVs and small homes line the roads, péntaque and pickleball courts offer residents recreational spaces, and the front office acts as the community’s nucleus. Nothing looks amiss, except that is, for what’s missing — namely, clothing. Misty Katz, part owner of Nature’s Resort, finds comfort in shunning clothes. Growing up in South Africa, she was scolded by her parents for undressing in public when her clothes got dirty. She didn’t take those lessons too seriously. More than half a century later, she lives at a nudist (or naturist) resort in South Texas and doesn’t worry about dirty clothes anymore. For as long as Katz has been a nudist, she has also been a Christian. Public nudity may seem antithetical to the modesty often promoted by churches, but to Katz, the two go hand in hand. “Believe it or not, we are modest,” Katz says. “Modesty doesn’t mean you have to cover everything up. We don’t display our wares, we’re not adorning various parts of our bodies in a way that’s going to attract attention.” Her idea of modesty echoes Pope John Paul II’s 1981 book “Love and Responsibility,” in which he writes “nakedness itself is not immodest.” He goes on to explain that immodesty presents itself only when nakedness serves to sexually arouse.

At Nature’s Resort, public nudity is not sexual. “The initial conception is that this is a sexual thing,” Katz says. “People think we’re all out on the front lawn having sex with each other, swapping partners. In fact, if there is any overt sexuality, you see that gate open real fast and somebody is ushered out.” Some Christian critics of nudism, including Mary Lowman of The Christian Working Woman, see the lifestyle as an affront to God. On her website’s page The Christian Dress Code, Lowman claims “God’s dress code from the beginning has been to cover our nakedness.” Even still, nudism attracts unlikely allies. Some nondenominational, hard-line conservative clergy accept nudism. Pastor Ron Smith, of McAllen’s Church of the King, vehemently opposes homosexuality, abortion and the transgender community, but when it comes to nudism, his strident views loosen up. “I think it’s odd, I think it’s strange, but I have no proof it’s sinning,” Smith said. “We have a retired couple that sit in the front row every Sunday that live at a nudist camp. I believe they’re dedicated Christians.” Because the Bible doesn’t explicitly forbid nudism, Smith says he cannot condemn those who practice it. In fact, the Bible condones nudism on several occasions: “Adam and Eve were in the garden talking to God every day. They were nude,” Katz says. “When David had his big victory in battle, he went dancing in the streets naked to praise God. So, that must be OK in God’s eyes.” Katz isn’t the only Christian at Nature’s Resort. Chip and Daisy are a married couple who requested to exclude their last names so friends and family don’t learn of their nudism.

BILL and Misty Katz pose in front of their home at Nature's Resort on March 16, 2022, in Elsa, Texas. Photo:Jeremy Lindenfeld/AP They, like most everyone at Nature’s Resort, are winter Texans, retirees spending their summers up north and coming down to the Rio Grande Valley when temperatures start to drop. Chip, a Black man, is also one of the only residents of color out of the up to 250 people in the community. Like Katz, Chip and Daisy find nudism fits neatly into their Christianity and see it enhancing their religious lives. “In a nudist environment, the true Christian belief of valuing others and not judging others is accentuated,” Daisy says. “Here, you don’t judge someone

for what they look like or what they wear.” “It’s one thing to be with Christians in a building,” Chip says. “It’s another thing to be with Christians who are nudists. There’s a deeper connectivity.” Though Nature’s Resort is not explicitly religious, it is affiliated with the American Association for Nude Recreation, an organisation with deep Christian roots. AANR, once named the American Sunbathing Association, and the American League for Physical Culture before that, was led by Ilsley Boone in the 1930s. Boone was a Dutch Reformed minister and a driving force

behind popularising Christian naturism in the US, where he preached a religiously enriching nudism. Christian naturism, popular in the early 20th century, continues to find success in the digital age on online forums. And though Nature’s Resort’s particular brand of nudism is not the Christian variety, some of its members have found the lifestyle deeply spiritual. “I think it’s far easier being a Christian nudist than being a Christian nonnudist,” Katz says. “That’s because as a Christian, you’ve got to love everybody. And as a nudist, you do love everybody.”

OPTICAL ILLUSIONS – SEEING LIFE ANOTHER WAY I

am a fan of brain teasers, crossword puzzles, word fill-ins, you name it. One of my favourite pastimes is figuring out an optical illusion. Some are easy and can be figured out almost immediately. Others provide more challenge and can really boggle the mind. No matter what the illusion, however, figuring it out can be rewarding cognitively (yes, you guys know I teach) and personally – there is a sense of achievement for me when I figure out what an illusion is. When you look at it, we are surrounded with situations that can prove optical illusions. Here are the characteristics: They can be very confusing. One thing can seem another, depending on your viewpoint. Success in figuring out what it is will depend on how you look at or face the situation Sometimes, just looking at a circumstance with a new perspective gives you a better outcome. I’ll be the first to say that I prefer things presented to me in black and white. You see, I’m a

AYANNA CLARKE

very literal type person. I don’t know how to plant seeds of divisiveness. I’m not sure how to really gossip with cruel intent, and I’m such an open book that my candor tends to make those who have a more negative agenda very uncomfortable. In addition, I used to be very one-track minded, I didn’t pick up on nuance or subterfuge, and could never figure out if I was being truly supported or taken

advantage of. Thank God for a keen sense of discernment, otherwise I would be toast. Coupled with that is the enduring favour of God that covers and protects me (us all, really) from every unsavory tactic of the enemy.

But our task for this series is to begin to look at things a different way. Consider different factors that can make us see the bigger picture, the larger lesson, and come out on the other side with a winning attitude.

Working on optical illusions, however, has given me a great ability to work on these, often times, limiting characteristics and broaden the scope of my understanding. In other words, they have helped me to see the different shades of behavior and mannerisms that help me to know someone’s true agenda. Although Paul was speaking of the perfection of eternity, I love the first Corinthians quote, “Now we see through a glass darkly...” I love to apply this to life in general. There are times when we won’t know another person’s intentions, we won’t know just how far they will go to get what they want; and once that knowledge is perfected and we become aware, the tendency to become angry, bitter, morose, distrusting and unforgiving is high.

How do we solve optical illusions? We can: 1. Adjust our focus 2. Read between the lines 3. Refer to our experience arsenal 4. Look at the situation with fresh eyes 5. Never make the mistake of seeing things from one point of view Don’t these steps make optical illusions seem a lot like life? They do, don’t they? Just like a picture that presents one or two visuals all at once, life can present negative situations that have such positive possibilities. The divorce could be a stepping stone into a more fulfilling relationship. The unemployment can be the

start of being an entrepreneur. The loss of a mother can lead to becoming a great surrogate, yourself. So many options depending on your perspective; depending on the actions that you take to get out of the situation and your entire posture in the ordeal. Listen, I’m not perfect. But I operate fairly as a part of God’s Kingdom, and I have learned to see my fellowman as myself. This has come from learning the lesson in an experience. Not taking the victim’s mentality but from growing through the circumstance to a better me! What is gained from seeing life as an optical illusion? You become resilient; you can manage your emotions well; you never succumb to subversive habits intended to diminish another person. You become better, greater – and you prepare yourself for better in the process. God bless you this week!

SAUDI ARABIA EXPECTING ONE MILLION IN LARGEST HAJJ SINCE VIRUS MECCA, SAUDI ARABIA Associated Press ONE million Muslim pilgrims were converging on Saudi Arabia's holy city of Mecca on Wednesday for the largest hajj since the coronavirus pandemic severely curtailed access to one of Islam's five pillars. Saudi Arabia's decision to allow some 850,000 Muslims from abroad to make the annual pilgrimage, which begins on Thursday, marks a major step toward normalcy after two years of a drastically scaled-down hajj restricted to Saudi residents. The 1 million foreign and domestic pilgrims participating is still far less than the 2.5 million Muslims who traveled in 2019 for the pilgrimage, typically one of the world's largest gatherings. Those performing the ritual this year must be under 65, vaccinated against the coronavirus and have tested

negative for COVID-19 within 72 hours of travel. The pilgrims are chosen from millions of applicants through an online lottery system. Saudi officials inspected the holy site on Wednesday and stressed their "readiness" to receive pilgrims with the goal of "maintaining public health." After the coronavirus struck in 2020, Saudi authorities allowed just 1,000 pilgrims already residing in the kingdom to attend, prompting historians to compare the disruption to the site's storming by religious extremists and dramatic closure in 1979. Last year, the hajj was similarly restricted to 60,000 fully vaccinated Muslims living in Saudi Arabia. The unprecedented curbs sent shock waves throughout the Muslim world, devastating many believers who had spent years saving up for the religious rite.

THOUSANDS of Muslim pilgrims circumambulate around the Kaaba, the cubic building at the Grand Mosque, in the Saudi Arabia's holy city of Mecca, Tuesday, July 5, 2022. Saudi Arabia is expected to receive one million Muslims to attend Hajj pilgrimage, which will begin on July 7, after two years of limiting the numbers because coronavirus pandemic. Photo:Amr Nabil/AP

This year, however, Saudi authorities are keen to relax virus curbs. Religious pilgrimages brought in $12 billion before the pandemic — accounting for the largest percentage of Saudi Arabia's gross domestic product after oil. Although virus cases have risen steadily to over 500 a day in Saudi Arabia, the government

lifted the country's indoor mask mandate and other virus precautions last month. Roughly 70% of the country has been vaccinated against the virus. Pilgrims at the holy site this year are not required to be masked or socially distanced, as during the past two years. However, Muslims are still prohibited from kissing or touching

the cube-shaped Kaaba, the metaphorical house of God at the center of Mecca that pilgrims circle as they complete the hajj. The Quran says that all Islam's followers who are physically and financially able should make the pilgrimage once in their lifetime. Pilgrims travel to Mecca from all over the world for five intense days of worship, carrying out a series of rituals.

Encouragement in hard times W

hat do we classify as hard times for an individual or family? Consider the suffering of the following persons and what would you say to: Parents losing a baby Employees losing jobs with no savings Persons experiencing a nasty divorce, or wedding cancellation Those with terminal illness diagnoses Any other situations come to your mind? What do we do when there seems to be little that we can do? How do we encourage in a seemingly hopeless situation? There are some things that we can still do: 1. Be present—in the way that Job’s friends sat with him in silence for seven days. 2. Listen attentively, alert to body language, facial expression and tones of voice 3. Speak lovingly, offering godly counsel if asked 4. Pray before, during and after the call or visit, and with the persons if appropriate.

after me, and I am not good enough to take the sandals off his feet.” He says to both sets of people: “it is to us that the message of salvation has been sent!” Just as John the Baptist spoke of the need to repent from sins and be baptised, we are called to take the same message to everyone, as we all need the Lord, today. In this season of Pentecost, the Lord’s power is upon each one of us and our children. We have to respond to this call to proclaim the Good News. In the Collect for the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, we pray to become more like John: “Almighty God, by whose providence your servant John the Baptist was wonderfully born, and sent to prepare the way of your Son our Savior by preaching repentance: Make us so to follow his teaching and holy life, that we may truly repent according to his preaching; and, following his example, constantly speak the truth, boldly rebuke vice, and patiently suffer for the truth's sake; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.”

In Isaiah 40:1-11 NIV, we hear words from God to the children of Israel: “Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins…You who bring good news to Zion, go up on a high mountain. You who bring good news to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with a shout, lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the towns of Judah, “Here is your God!” See, the Sovereign Lord comes with power, and he rules with a mighty arm. See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him. He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.” Jesus has come to be our shepherd. He set an example of love and care, healing and blessing. The Church is called to carry on this work. In Psalm 85:7-13 NIV, we have words of promise and hope: “I will listen to what God the Lord says; he promises peace to his

people, his faithful servants— but let them not turn to folly. Surely his salvation is near those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other. Faithfulness springs forth from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven. The Lord will indeed give what is good, and our land will yield its harvest. Righteousness goes before him and prepares the way for his steps.” It speaks of better times coming. My sisters and brothers, this is our time to bring comfort in hard times using our presence, prayers, listening, helping, words of hope, comfort, challenge and encouragement. • Rev Angela Palacious, a motivational speaker and author of several devotional books, is an Anglican priest. POPE DENIES RESIGNATION RUMOURS, HOPES TO VISIT KYIV, MOSCOW ROME (AP) — Pope Francis has dismissed rumours he plans to resign anytime soon, and says that he hopes to visit Moscow and Kyiv after travelling to Canada later this month. Francis also told Reuters in an interview published Monday that the idea “never entered my mind” to announce a planned retirement at the end of the summer, though he repeated he might step down some day as Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI did in 2013. He revealed that his knee trouble, which has

caused him to use a wheelchair for over a month, was caused by a “small fracture” that occurred when he stepped awkwardly while the knee ligament was inflamed. He said it is “slowly getting better” with laser and magnet therapy. Francis was due to have visited Congo and South Sudan this week but had to cancel the trip because doctors said he needed more therapy. He said he was on board to travel to Canada July 24-30 and said he hoped to visit Russia and Ukraine sometime thereafter.

The Episcopal saint whose journey for social justice took many forms, from sit-ins to priesthood By SARAH AZARANSKY Associate Professor of Social Ethics, Union Theological Seminary (THE CONVERSATION) – July 1 was the annual feast day for Episcopal saint Pauli Murray, the first Black woman to be ordained by the denomination: an affirmation of her many contributions not only to the church, but to social justice in the United States. Saints exemplify “what it means to follow in the footsteps of Jesus and make a difference in the world, and Pauli Murray is one of those people,” Episcopal Bishop Michael Curry said when Murray gained the status of a saint in 2012. I am a scholar of religion and ethics and have written a biography of Murray and her faith. Throughout her life as an activist, author, lawyer and priest, Murray developed new ways of thinking about justice and identity – ideas important today. Front line for racial justice Born in 1910 in Baltimore, Murray jumped into civil rights activism after she graduated from New York’s Hunter College. In the 1940s, she was in the vanguard of Black Christian activists who studied Indian independence leader Mohandas Gandhi’s practice of nonviolent direct action and applied it to the struggle for racial justice in the US. More than a decade before Rosa Parks’ arrest for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white rider, Murray was arrested for integrating an interstate bus. She organized sit-ins in segregated restaurants in Washington, DC, a strategy other activists famously replicated in Greensboro, North Carolina. In 1956, Murray published “Proud Shoes,” a family memoir that brought attention to how central sexual violence

PAULI MURRAY: PRIEST, ACTIVIST, LAWYER AND MORE. was in the history of US slavery. Murray offered her family – who was Black, white and Indigenous, and whose ancestors were both enslaved and free – as an emblem of the nation, and an example of the history all Americans needed to reckon with. Feminist and priest As a lawyer, Murray used her career to advocate for racial justice. But she also grew increasingly involved with advocacy for women’s rights, to which she made landmark legal contributions. In the 1960s, Murray laid the groundwork by encouraging feminist lawyers to move away

from seeking special protections for women and instead argue for equal rights. Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg credited Murray with teaching her how appealing to the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment could be an effective method to fight sex discrimination. After hearing Murray argue that there should be an NAACP – the country’s oldest civil rights organization – just for women, feminist leader Betty Friedan invited Murray to a strategy session where the National Organization for Women was founded. A lifelong Episcopalian, Murray made a dramatic-seeming move to enroll in a seminary

when she was in her mid-60s. Yet to Murray, it made perfect sense. She described preparing for the ministry as one more way to address questions of human rights and social justice. Murray entered seminary before the Episcopal Church began ordaining women and organised with others to push for women’s ordination. In January 1977, she became one of the first women, and the first Black woman, to be ordained. Murray indeed contained multitudes, including when it came to gender identity. At some points in life Murray identified as a man; at others, as a woman. Murray was in longterm romantic relationships with women, but did not publicly identify as lesbian or queer. When she prepared her papers to be archived, Murray included writings about her multiple gender and sexual identities so they would be available for future generations. During her life, categories like “nonbinary” or “trans” were not used, but many scholars and admirers today see her as an early icon for transgender people. Written into law Another way Murray’s work seems prescient today is her focus on what’s now called “intersectionality”: how multiple aspects of a person’s identity, such as race, gender, income and nationality, intersect to shape their privilege or oppression. A prime example is Murray’s phrase “Jane Crow” – a spin on “Jim Crow” – which she coined to describe Black women’s experiences of being discriminated against because of racism and sexism. In a world where “male supremacy” and “white supremacy” are prevalent, a Black woman “finds herself at the bottom of the economic and social scale,” Murray wrote in 1947.

Murray’s “Jane Crow” has made important contributions in American history. In 1964, for example, she employed the concept to keep “sex” as a category in Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, making it unlawful to discriminate against someone in employment based on race, color, national origin, sex or religion. Some lawmakers thought “sex” was a distraction in a law that focused on discrimination based on race. As a Black woman, Murray argued that both race and sex needed to be included if the law were to protect people like her. Murray, who taught law at Brandeis University, arrives for classes in Waltham, Mass., in 1971. Murray’s insistence on including sex in Title VII has become essential to LGBTQ rights today. The landmark 2020 Supreme Court ruling in Bostock v. Clayton County prohibits employers from firing people because they are gay or trans. Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch, who wrote the majority opinion, wrote, “It is impossible to discriminate against a person for being homosexual or transgender without discriminating against that individual based on sex.” Murray’s capacious sense of being a human, which she gleaned in part from her own experiences, inspired her many contributions to social justice. In a letter to friends soon after her ordination, Murray wrote, “we bring our total selves to God, our sexuality, our joyousness, our foolishness. … I’m out to make Christianity a joyful thing.” • This article is republished from The Conversation, an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts. MARLIN AWARDS 2022 NOMINEES AND WINNERS.

Twenty-five years of Marlin Awards - A celebration of regional gospel music By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net

M

uch more than an awards show, the Marlin Awards are a celebration of regional gospel music and the talented artists that put their blood sweat and tears into their work. The event, which is also known as the Caribbean Gospel Music Awards, celebrated its 25 anniversary this year with a special event last Sunday at the Myles Munroe Diplomat Centre in Nassau. It was one of the biggest nights for gospel music that saw artists from all over the region make their way to the Bahamas to celebrate. Caribbean and Bahamian artists were crowned winners in over 40 categories including “Outstanding Album”, “Outstanding Black Gospel Recording”, “Outstanding Adapted Recording Female”, “Outstanding Adapted Recording Male” and more. The Marlin Awards were established to recognise and honour achievements in Caribbean gospel music. Hundreds of recording artists, songwriters, musicians, producers, media and other industry professionals have come together over the years to celebrate. The awards were first launched on March 16, 1996, by recording

artist, radio personality and media executive Kevin Harris. Initially known as the Bahamian Gospel Music Marlin Awards, the event expanded in 2000 to include eight Caribbean gospel categories, and in 2002 the awards evolved even further to incorporate other styles of Caribbean gospel music. The event was subsequently rebranded as the Caribbean Gospel Music Marlin Awards. Awards are distributed in over 40 categories including “New Artist of the Year”, “Song of the Year and Album of the Year”. There are also a number of special awards including the President’s Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award. The vision of the Marlin Awards has always been to inspire and encourage excellence and growth in Caribbean gospel music. In staying true to its vision, the brand has created promotional platforms and networking opportunities for regional artists and industry professionals. It has also motivated recording artists, songwriters and producers to create recordings, music videos and other creative content in the spirit of excellence towards the advancement of the kingdom of God. Nominees and winners are selected by a panel of industry professionals. The Caribbean

MARLIN President Kevin Harris & Family at Marlin Awards 2022. Gospel Marlin Awards are produced by the Bahamas-based marketing, media and production firm Oracle Media Consultants (formerly Harris Media Group). On this year’s big night, founder Kevin Harris celebrated the artists and those who have a played a pivotal role in the success of the event thus far. “We started 26 years ago. Tonight, has been a journey. Because of the pandemic we had to celebrate our 25th anniversary this year. We started this vision with nothing but a dream and a $900 investment that was sent by Western Union by my then girlfriend, who became my fiancée and who is now my wife. That is how the awards started,” he said.

“Tonight, is about celebrating local and regional talent and it has been great journey. I thank God for the people that have invested in all of the artists of the Bahamas and Caribbean have trusted us with this vision of the Marlin Awards. We are certainly very grateful. We thank God to be of service as a family to so many artists, over some many years. We also could not do this without the strong support of our team.” Mr Harris has worked in the entertainment and marketing industry for over 25 years. In 1988, he launched a local rap group named System 3 which toured throughout the United States, the Caribbean and the Family Islands, ministering the

gospel in song. In 1996, System 3 was nominated for a Grammy Award for their vocal contribution on the first gospel album ever released by the Motown Records label called, “Motown Comes Home”. The group was featured on the single “Kum By Ya” which also featured multiple Grammy Award-winning artists Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson. It was also in 1996 when Mr Harris launched the Bahamian Gospel Music Marlin Awards. The Marlin Awards are now considered the top gospel awards for the Caribbean. He has had the opportunity to organise events featuring some of the most recognised names in music, television, including American civil rights icon, the late Rosa Parks; television personality, Oprah Winfrey; Grammy Award winners Be Be Winans, Donnie McClurkin, Quincy Jones, the late Natalie Cole, Mary Mary, Pastor Shirley Caesar, as well as international best-selling authors John C Maxwell and the late Dr Myles Munroe. He served as the marketing assistant for Western Union and British American Bank from 1996-1998 and as a full-time assistant youth pastor at Bahamas Faith Ministries from 1998-2002.
