Young eNue artists celebrate a ‘Sweet Victory’

M

embers of th eNue Street Team were victorious last Saturday as they hosted a successful night of music, drama and dance at the Life Empowerment Church.

Held under the theme “The Art of eNue: Sweet Victory”, the third annual event was geared towards highlighting the gifts and talents of the young people who are part of eNue’s Street Team, a mentorship programme that caters to youth between the ages of 13 and 30.

The programme focuses on helping young people to appreciate, embrace and release their inner greatness.

“We have so many young people that are extremely gifted and we wanted to create an avenue to showcase these gifts and also allow persons to be blessed by them,” said Antonia Lightbourne, founder of the eNue Street Team.

She said it was a delight to see the more shy members step out of their comfort zone and express themselves for all to see and hear.

“The leadership realised that we needed to create an avenue to highlight these amazing gifts that God was sending our way, and the Art of eNue was the perfect way to do so.

Young people got to see their peers expressing themselves through the arts and it created an atmosphere of truth through the arts for all ages,” said Antonia.

When asked about the “Sweet Victory” theme, Antonia said it was inspired by the victory the members have experienced as a team over the nine years since the programme began.

“The drama highlight of the event specifically displayed how we sometimes must change our words in order to change our world. A lot of times we want to see victory, yet we speak defeat. We want persons to understand that their language plays

a big role in their life. You can’t talk defeat and expect to see victory. It will also showcase that there is no area in your life that God doesn’t desire to give you victory in.

No matter how challenging, frustrating or difficult it may seem, God desires for us to experience victory in every area,” she said.

Through its events over the years, she said the Art of eNue as been able to always attract newcomers to the organisation who are looking for a place where their purpose and greatness can be unlocked.

interview She is best known as the custodian of Bahamian history. But this weekend, the former director-general of the National Archives will herself be written into the history books when she is presented with a Bahamian Icon Award. She tells Cara Hunt about her love for preserving the past and why it is important to remember those that came before.

his Saturday at the Meliá Nassau Beach resort, Dr Gail Saunders will be presented with the Bahamian Icon Lifetime Achievement Award. It is a fitting honour for a woman who has spent her entire adulthood helping scores of Bahamians learn about their heritage.

The Icon winner sat down with Tribune Weekend to discuss how a love of history has shaped and directed her whole life.

“I was born on East Street, opposite the police barracks where the treasury is located now, in the house owned by my great-grandfather and then passed down to my parents, Basil North and Audrey Isaacs, who was the sister of Kendall Isaacs. They got married at the age of 18 and 19.”

Her interest in history as a subject came at a very young age.

“I think I came to love history because I did well in it. I did math and geometry and algebra, but I could never make a career out of studying them further. I became a teacher after graduating from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne – with a Bachelor of Arts in History and a postgraduate degree in Education from the University of Leicester,” she said.

Growing up in a segregated Bahamas also motivated her.

“It was not how it is now,” she says of her childhood. “There were certain places people of colour couldn’t go.

When I was growing up the Savoy Theatre was one of them; only whites or people who were very light skinned and were part of the white community

were accepted, but persons of a darker hue were not accepted. We used to go the Capital and the Nassau Theatre when we were growing up because of segregation,” she said.

“I think that whole subject of discrimination sort of irked me because I think people are people and my family for example on both side range from black to nearly white. And we

were brought up in our household that it didn’t matter about colour, but of course this was not so among all Bahamians.”

Dr Saunders said that this is why she has a special fondness for the modern era of Bahamian history, starting from the late 1950s, and the Bahamians who fought to bring majority rule to the masses.

This includes Sir Ethane Dupuch who tabled an anti-discrimination resolution in the House of Assembly in 1956 and the founders of the Progressive Liberal Party (the country’s first national political party): William Cartwright, Cyril Stevenson and Henry Milton Taylor.

and served as its head until her retirement in 2008.

She also served as the president of the Bahamas Historical Society from 1989 until 1999, and was the president of the Caribbean Historians, president of the Caribbean Archives Association, and an executive member of the International Council on Archives.

Additionally, she has penned several books, including “Historic Bahamas”, “Islanders in the Stream: A History of the Bahamian People”, and “Race and Class in the Colonial Bahamas, 1880-1960.”

While her achievements as it regards Bahamian history are well documented, many people may not be aware of her athletic success.

Dr Saunders represented her country on the sprint relay team at the 1962 Central American and the Caribbean Games in Kingston, Jamaica.

She was one of four women along with Althea Rolle-Clarke, Elaine Thompson and Christina Jones-Darville to first represent the Bahamas in an international sports competition.

“I am an Anglican, but somehow I got pulled into St Bernard’s, a Roman Catholic group. I ran for them and I did very well in the 100m and the 200m, but I found out later that for the 400m, if I had wanted to go on and become world-class, I had the speed and the stamina when I was younger, and perhaps the 400m would have been my race,” she said.

Dr Saunders is also an accomplished tennis player.

“A few years ago my cousin Robert Isaacs and I won a mixed doubles tennis tournament, beating two of the best players. It was quite an achievement,” she said.

Dr Saunders was awarded the Commonwealth honour of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2003; the University of the West Indies awarded her an honorary degree in 2004, and she was inducted into the Bahamas National Sports Hall of Fame in 2013 Addis Huyler, the founder of the Bahamian Icon Awards, said Dr Saunders is the perfect lifetime honoree.

“We are not the makers of history, we are made by history. I think Martin Luther King Jr said that. And Gail Saunders has devoted her entire career to being the gatekeeper of our history, all those stories that inspire us, that make us more informed and educate us and give us courage and validate who we are as Bahamians,” he said.

“...the Bahamas was just a very poor island nation in the beginning.

And people just teach about the pirates and so forth, but we were more than that. There have been some mistakes, but I think that we are a fantastic little country...”

Bahamas. She reminds us of who we are and where we come from and how important it is for us to strive to be the best that we can be. “ While Dr Saunders said she is humbled and grateful for the award, she has never sought recognition for the work she does.

“I don’t do it for any recognition or praise, and I was hesitant in accepting.

I think it’s a great honour and you have made me feel really great. But I never want to feel that I am special or better than anyone,” she said.

Dr Saunders said that her own Bahamian icons are her parents and her uncle Kendall Isaacs, who she says always took a special interest in her education.

“He was a shy man. I don’t think he was really a politician at heart, but I think that he was pulled into politics.

He was a very honest man and clever,” she said.

“I would also say Sir Lynden Pindling is really a Bahamian icon.

I think he tried his best to be fair as possible. I have great admiration for

him and Lady Marguerite Pindling.

They, despite my background having a mother who was an Isaacs, embraced both my late husband Winston and myself as friends.”

In true iconic fashion, Dr Saunders wants to encourage the younger generation of Bahamians to embrace their history.

“I would say history is not a dead subject; it is very compelling. It is very interesting to learn about our ancestors and the events that took place and to trace how we came to this position, because the Bahamas was just a very poor island nation in the beginning. And people just teach about the pirates and so forth, but we were more than that. There have been some mistakes, but I think that we are a fantastic little country and we have come a long way and we are a democratic nation which to me is very very important,” she said.

Living the sweet life

S

ometimes in life you just need a push to make you pursue your dreams in earnest. For 28-yearold Kathonia Bain that push came from her sister Kyshnia and mother Cathressia Brown, who motivated her to start her own baking business.

The company, Everything Cupcake, started out out six years ago offering just what the name indicates – cupcakes in all flavours and colours. But since then, and with the growing demand by customers for more creativity and elaborate baked goods, Kathonia has evolved and is now on the path to becoming one of Nassau’s leading confectionery shops.

“Baking for me was always a hobby. I totally took over my mother’s kitchen. I enjoyed making delicious cupcakes for friends and family. It’s something that I’m very passionate about. I love that I can be a part of people’s celebrations. Whether it’s a birthday, graduation, wedding, baby shower or just simply a just because, I enjoy the smiles on my customers’ face,” said Ms Bain.

“I no longer just do cupcakes. I started doing cakes in 2016. That is a fear I had, but I tried it and I love it, along with other pastries such as candy apple, cotton candy, chocolate-covered Oreo, candy popcorn and much more. I also ventured into event decorating and party supplies. I make over 15 different flavours in cupcakes such as Bailey’s, Oreo, chocolate, cheesecake, confetti, piña colada, banana split, red velvet, just to name a few.”

Kathonia said her customers play a very important role in the ongoing evolution of her business, challenging her to expand and improve upon her skills.

“As the years go by my clientele built up. I have to thank God for that because if I didn’t step out on faith and follow my dreams I wouldn’t be able to do what I’m doing today. My goal is to perfect my passion, to expand my business and hopefully one day be able to teach other young ladies some of my baking skills. For the remainder of the year customers will get to experience new flavours and also be a part of my new venture. I have a lot of plans and goals set out for Everything Cupcake and it only gets better from here,” she said.

Radio House hosts voices of the future

DJs give Summer club kids hands-on experience

T

he Summer break has officially begun, and while many high schoolers are off chilling on the beach or relaxing at home, the teens that make up the Kidz Radio Club are enthusiastically learning more about an industry which might hold the key to their future careers.

During a tour of Radio House on Shirley Street this week, the students had the opportunity to learn first-hand about the inner workings of a radio station from Jamal ‘DJ Xcitement’ Rodgers, programme director for Tribune Radio. Along with his colleague DJ Xtra Large, Jamal shared with the students how his life experiences led him to a career in broadcasting.

Listening with rapt attention and excitement in their eyes, the students were eager to participate in a programme which aims to to help them find their unique voices.

The media industry in the Bahamas may be relatively small, but there are many seasoned professionals in the field who have mastered their craft and are willing to train the next generation with the tools, skills and insight necessary to contribute to the further development of the sector.

Since 2015, the Kidz Radio Club, a non-profit Summer intervention programme, has offered high school seniors the chance to experience handson media training.

This year, The Tribune, which was recently awarded for its contributions to the programme, decided to host a tour of Radio House, which allowed students to visit the various stations

and meet the voices behind some of the country’s biggest radio shows.

Jamal, who facilitated the tour, said: “The younger demographic are the future. When we pass on, go to other radio stations, or decide to take on a different career path, it’s the younger generation that’s actually going to take the place of us. So it’s important to teach them and engage them.”

“As a young child growing up, listening to the radio, I always wondered how they did certain things, so hopefully we could answer those questions that they had in their minds. So I’m glad that they had the opportunity to

come in today and learn just a bit more on what it is that we do,” he added.

His sentiments were shared by show hosts and deejays at Radio House, who all agreed that a career in broadcasting could be very promising.

JJ McKenzie, host of 100 JAMZ, shared with the high schoolers how she got hired and also encouraged the kids to work hard at what they love. She also demonstrated how she speaks on air, and even allowed some of the students to give a shout-out to listeners.

Her words of wisdom resonated particularly with Skye Bonaby, a 16-year-old C V Bethel Senior High

student, who said she is grateful to the club for helping her with her public speaking.

“I learned a lot of things that I didn’t know about radio. My favourite part was meeting JJ because I liked how she encouraged us to be ourselves (and told us) not to forget our personality, and (how not to) act stiff on the radio,” said Skye.

This was echoed by Jabari Stuart, a 16-year-old student from C I Gibson, who said the experience has helped him in his pursuit of career in music.

“I’ve learned a lot of things about the music industry such as registering your name as a trademark and such. Meeting all these people from the different radio stations gave me an idea of what it takes to become a musician,” he said.

Jabari also mentioned that he learned a lot in particular from Jamal, and said he is eager to share some of his own music mixes with the programme director in the future.

The majority of the students agreed that the club has provided them with valuable experiences they could not have obtained elsewhere.

Egandra Bethel, who serves as an assistant for the Kidz Radio Club, said it was “cool” to observe all of the hands-on training the kids have gotten to experience this Summer.

Recalling previous sessions when the kids built a radio transmitter at BTVI and interviewed people on Potter’s Cay Dock, she said: “It’s been a pretty interesting experience for me to observe so far, and hopefully they take the lessons that they learn and apply it to their career fields if they so choose.”

Leon Rolle, an 11th grader from C V Bethel Senior High, said the club has helped him expand his horizon when it comes to potential post-graduation endeavours.

Admitting that there were aspects of radio he had never considered before, Leon said he was glad to learn about the importance of modulation, voice projection and content.

“Usually I’m not an extrovert; I’m usually very introverted, but this club has allowed me to speak, which is the whole point of the club for children to find their voice,” he said. “I have a fascination with words. I like to read, I like to write...In the future I’ll be

able to look back and use what I have learned from this experience and just smile at the opportunity that I had and see how it was fruitful.”

D’Andre Miller, an 11th grade student from Doris from Johnson Senior High, admitted that the experience had been “a bit rough” for him because he “really doesn’t socialise as much.”

“I don’t really talk or anything, so they really have allowed me to enhance my communication skills, socialise more, and meet new people.”

D’Andre said while the experience was familiar because he had been to a radio station before, he really enjoyed meeting some of the deejays he always tunes into, but has never seen in real life.

He added: “My favourite speaker was DJ Xcitement – Mr Rodgers. He was telling us about his journey going through radio, and he showed us DJ Xtra Large and explained how they both got started. It was really interesting hearing about all of their pasts.”

Tierra Higgs from CC Sweeting Senior High was among the students who got to go into the booth with DJ LJ while he was mixing his show live on air.

“Kidz Radio Club is going to help me out because radio and deejaying is music on the whole, and I believe that I can inherit a lot from that. I’d like to gain communication and speaking skills, because I was literally scared to talk about myself,” she said.

Alenna Rahming, a student of R M Bailey who also aspires to be a deejay, said she’s learnt “a lot about radio broadcasting, interviewing and how to conduct an effective interview.”

Aspiring radio/TV personality Carolyn Sears, a 16-year-old student of Doris Johnson Senior High, said the experience has boosted her communication and vocal skills. She described the experience as a “fun-filled” day during which she learned a lot.

“I really enjoyed the motivational pep talk in the upstairs conference room...when they talked to me it kind of loosened me up an relieved my stress,” she said.

Carolyn added that visiting radio host MJ in the Y98.7 booth was her favourite part of the day, because the host made her feel very comfortable.

“It looked quite complicated, but I believe that with some sufficient training I should be able to handle it all. I’d like to be a radio personality like MJ and JJ so that would be a nice thing to let them be my role models and just style my career after them,” she said.

Keno Burrows, club facilitator and audio engineer for the Ministry of Education, explained the goal of the day out was to “expose students to how deejays disc jockey and collaborate with each other, as well as to demonstrate how radios operate with commercials.”

“My role is to expose them the children to the radio industry. In today’s society, broadcasting complements a lot of careers in life. If you want to be a police, if you want to be in the hospital industry, you need that broadcasting and communication skill...that’s what it’s really all about – speaking, communicating, and transferring information,” he said.

Antoinette Gibson-Sands, Kidz Radio Club facilitator and Time For Education programme producer, described the tour as a “career experience day”.

She explained that the Kidz Radio Club aims to show students that there are people who care about their futures and will offer them guidance in choosing a suitable career path.

“What we’re doing here today here at 100 JAMZ is letting them get their feet wet, seeing what the industry is all about, and from there we hope to build their self-confidence and as a result ignite the passion for the field,” she said.

R&B artist Kamilah has love on her mind Bahamian singer joins forces with New York producer

hat do you when the object for your affection is already in a relationship or spoken for? Do you bottle up your feelings or do reveal yourself and let the chips fall where they may?

In her new soulful single “On My Mind”, Bahamian performer Kamilah suggests the latter route. Released last Friday, the song aims to get listeners to think about what direction they want to go in romantically speaking. She singer hopes the track will also offer them some solutions.

“On My Mind” was co-written with emerging New York R&B artist/producer Sho. “On My Mind was an opportunity to jump into the hypothetical. What do you do when you have a crush on someone who’s already in a relationship,” said Kamilah.

It’s a situation that many many people find themselves in, so the singer decided to use a semi-apologetic tone and “flirts with taboo territory” for this track which she hopes will speak to Bahamians. She is now eager for feedback.

“On My Mind” is available on all major music platforms including Apple iTunes, Spotify and Tidal.

From the onset of her music career, Kamilah strived to create luscious, intense soundscapes with her impressive vocal range.

One of the very first careerpropelling showcases for the rising star took place in 2013 at the iconic Apollo Theatre in Harlem, New York, where Kamilah followed in the footsteps of legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Jackson, James Brown and Lauryn Hill. There, she also rubbed the stump of the famous Tree of Hope, an act which artists believe will bring them luck in their careers if approached with courage in their hearts.

Drake’s ‘Scorpion’ stings streaming competition NEW YORK (AP) — Drake’s “Scorpion” has set a record for most one-day streams for an album on Apple Music.

The streaming platform says the album has logged more than 170 million streams worldwide since its release Friday, more than doubling Drake’s prior one-day record on Apple Music with last year’s “More Life.”

The 25-track “Scorpion” includes the No 1 hits “Nice for What” and “God’s Plan.” The album features Michael Jackson on a previously unreleased track as well as collaborations with Jay-Z and Ty Dolla $ign.

The album is expected to debut at No 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

Kamilah placed first, advancing through to the second and third rounds. Though a win was ultimately what she had hoped for, it was not in the cards. Nevertheless, her Apollo performance set her on path to jumpstart her career.

Though Kamilah wears many hats – working as a graphic designer among other multiple roles – she still finds time to create magical and meaningful music.

Born and raised in Nassau before moving to Brooklyn, Kamilah said memories of childhood are full of listening to some of the greatest musicians of her parents’ time.

Music was the constant that kept her grounded and helped to teach her about life, and that truth is at the core of why she wants to continue to create, both for herself and others.

“Music is very cathartic. It can get you through some of the most elevating and traumatising times, and many people associate music with memories. I try to make music that helps people find their way through their experiences and grow from them. It helps me in that way and I want to share that with people,” she said.

T

ribune staff photographer Shawn Hanna is among the 75 Bahamians who have been nominated for the 2018 Bahamian Icon Awards, which will handed out this Saturday evening at the Meliá Nassau Beach resort.

Shawn is nominated for his reality show “The Next Face Bahamas” which seeks to discover new modelling talent in the country.

“Its a great honour to be nominated and recognised for this project. It was quite a surprise when I found out because ‘The Next Face’ was still in production when the nominations came out, but I am very happy. It’s interesting because I have attended the Icons for the past two years covering the red carpet for The Tribune, so to be on the carpet this year as a nominee is very exciting,” said Shawn.

Tribune cartoonist and previous Icon winner Jamaal Rolle “The Celebrity Artist” is also nominated in the Fine Arts category again this year.

The Bahamian Icon Awards were established in 2013 by Addis Huyler.

They acknowledge the exemplary achievements of men and women who have excelled in various industries, thus contributing to the overall development of the Bahamian community.

Each year, a Bahamian who has made transgenerational contributions to the development of the country is awarded the Bahamian Icon Lifetime Achievement Award. This year’s winner is historian Dr Gail Saunders, the former director of the National Archives,.

“Dr Saunders has devoted her entire career to being the gatekeeper of our history, all those stories that inspire us, that make us more informed and educate us and give us courage and validate who we are as Bahamians,” said Mr Huyler. The mark of a lifetime achiever is someone whose works transcends generations. She has made a bridge between the past and the present and also the future.”

From the monastery to the art gallery

D

oongalik Studios will host the July 18 opening of a new exhibition entitled “Reflections” by Noella Smith, a Benedictine oblate and artist. The exhibit consists of almost 40 abstract paintings that the self-taught artist has been working on for a period of years which are a reflection of her past experiences.

“I find art to be an expressive, reflective activity which relaxes me and allows me to transfer my feelings onto paper,” said Ms Smith. “I began drawing and painting as a hobby for my own benefit, but since I have developed this body of work over the years, I was encouraged to mount an exhibition for the public to enjoy as well. This will be my first formal exhibition at Doongalik, encouraged by the positive feedback I have received from the gallery and other artists who have viewed my work.”

Pam Burnside, owner of Doongalik, expressed her pleasure in hosting the

exhibition. “I met Sister Noella for the first time last year and was excited to see the level of her work. There are not many Bahamians who are abstract artists, so I wanted to expose and promote her art to the public.”

Noella Smith was born on Harbour Island. After attending the Convent School and the All Age Public School, the school’s principal, Patrick J Bethel, advised her mother, Nurse Rosa Sada Johnson, to take her to Nassau to attend Aquinas College. It was there she was able to nurture her artistic as well as her academic gifts.

During those years she was very much involved in church activities, and at the age of 17 she chose to enter a life of service. This led her to the next phase of her life which was calm and quiet.

She eventually moved on to other interests.

Presently, she serves as a Benedictine oblate of St Martin Monastery and enjoys the freedom which accompanies retirement. God has always

The artist extends sincere thanks to her great-grandmother, mother, other relatives, the Benedictine Sisters of St Martin Monastery. Part of the proceeds from the event will be donated to Saint Martin Monastery.

UB remembers Dr Tiffany Austin THE University of the Bahamas will be hosting several events and initiatives this Summer in honour of the late Dr Tiffany Austin.

Dr Austin was the co-organiser of the the University of the Bahamas’ literary festival, which was called the UB Spring Book and Literary Festival in 2017 and was renamed the Blue Flamingo Literary Festival this year.

She passed away on Saturday, June 30, reportedly from surgery complications.

Dr Craig Smith, chair of English Studies at the university, said she had suffered a fall while attending the 43rd Annual Conference, Caribbean Studies Association (CSA) in Cuba in early June. As a result of the fall, she broke her ankle, which required surgery.

“Dr Austin was such a gentle soul who brought so much to the faculty and to the students. In the short time at UB she has taken a personal interest in inspiring and developing

the creative talents of many of our students, English and non-English majors alike. She has also worked tirelessly on several ES initiatives: developing creative writing courses, working on the Blue Flamingo Lit Fest and applying for and receiving a grant that allowed students to publish a chapbook of their poetry,” he said.

“Dr Austin was a joy to work with, she always had a pleasant disposition and was excited for the possibilities for the development of more creative writers at UB and in the Bahamas.”

Dr Austin will be laid to rest this Saturday in Kansas, but a few events are also planned to remember her here in Nassau:

• Open mic event On July 13, UB will host an open mic poetry night at Hillside House.

• Chap book Tingum Collective will create and solicit other original pieces for a chap book in honour of Dr Austin.

• The Tiffany Austin Writing Prize Competition This annual on-campus creative writing competition will be announced in the Fall semester and the prize will be awarded in the Spring during the Blue Flamingo Literary Festival. (The judging committee will be made up of faculty and students). Prizes are to be determined.

• Memorial A memorial service is planned for August 24 at 6pm at the Harry C Moore Library Auditorium.

From a ‘beast’ on the court to flowering beauty

eaders of Tribune Sports may be familiar with Alicia-Marie Musgrove the basketball player, but they may not know that there is another, more delicate and creative side to this athletic young woman.

Alicia-Marie is also the owner of a flower shop called Marie Buds. And just as scoring hoops gave her a feeling of immense satisfaction, so does arranging floral masterpieces.

“I have always been an artsy person, working with different mediums, and I have now discovered that floral design is where my passion is. I have a natural gift that over time and with training I have now turned into a business. I love the fact that this allows me to be open to creativity and the freedom I have to create my idea of art,” she told Tribune Weekend.

She said she knows many Bahamians will be shocked to see her featured in the Weekend section and not in Sports, and will be surprised to learn that she has moved on from being known as “a beast on the ball court” to being “a beauty in the flower field”.

“Most people have a glamorous story about their start. I was actually working in the accounting field, trying to build some capital to do my own thing when I got very sick. I had an emergency surgery to have a cholecystectomy as I had developed 11 gall stones.

“My surgery was on a Tuesday, on the following Thursday I got an e-mail to inform me that I lost my job. I was on probation as I had not started long ago and could not fight them on it. My Dad said to me, ‘It’s the fourth quarter of the game, what are you gonna do?

and her former high school art teacher Marco Mullings, who once taught her that art is not the ability to draw, but that there are branches of creative skill and expression.

The home-based company Marie Buds now offers complete floral and gift services for every occasion, handmade silk flower crowns, gourmet

crates, event flowers and flower party arrangements. And Alicia-Marie said she is always open to fresh and modern ideas.

“Marie Buds has been open since September of 2017, and our most memorable client thus far has been Sir Arthur Foulkes. I was honoured to be asked to create some masterpieces for

his 90th birthday celebration of life,” she said.

“Typically, I receive comments about how unusual and vibrant my arrangements are from my ‘buds’ (clients).

They also tend to talk about the service they receive as I always aim to make it as personal as possible. Most recently, I was told by a ‘bud’ that I have a gift and that my hands are truly blessed. I could not agree more.”

Her overall goal for Marie Buds is to bring her very own modern flair to a classic industry. She envisions Marie Buds reaching the international level as well.

“I personally feel that we should never limit ourselves. We are only limited to the walls that we build around ourselves. I plan to break down walls whilst influencing others positively in the process. I have always been one to work in silence and keep an element of surprise. One thing I know for sure is that we will continue to grow from bud to masterpiece,” she said.

‘Black Panther’ star in talks for Kimbo Slice biopic

Black Panther’s Winston Duke is in line to play Kimbo Slice in an upcoming biopic

F

resh off the success of Marvel’s mega hit “Black Panther”, actor Winston Duke has been chosen to star in a biopic of iconic Bahamian mixed martial artist Kimbo Slice, according to IMDb News.

Duke, who reprised his role of M’Baku in this summer’s “Avengers: Infinity War”, is expected to play Slice in the film “Backyard Legend”, which is currently in development. Duke is also listed as an executive producer on the project.

The film will tell the life story of Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson, from his early days as a strip club bouncer and bodyguard to his rise to worldwide fame as one of the internet’s first viral stars thanks to videos of his backyard brawls in the streets of Miami, Florida.

Born in the Bahamas and raised in the Miami area, Slice began competing in unsanctioned street fights in 2003. Videos of his violent knockout victories gained him fans online. He was able to parlay this

‘The First Purge’ is depressingly prescient

THIS Fourth of July, we’ve got a chance to celebrate America’s birth in a very American way — watching internecine warfare, spasms of savage violence and a dark government conspiracy pulling the strings. That’s right, it’s time for a new Purge.

“The First Purge ,” the fourth film in the franchise, is an origin story set in modern day New York that allows creator James DeMonaco to do what he does best — mix social satire with doses of heart-pounding horror. It’s a worthy addition to the B-movie “Purge” cannon, even as it’s depressingly prescient.

For those unfamiliar with the lowbudget-but-high-earning “Purge” series, here’s how it works: In a dystopian near-future, the government, led by a nefarious party called the New Founding Fathers of America, allows an annual 12-hour period of lawlessness without recriminations.

Over the course of a single night, rape, murder, robbery and everything else is permitted across the nation as a way to release anger but also a way to cull from an overpopulated nation and lower crime.

On the ground, we meet our main players — Y’lan Noel, who makes a hunky and very charismatic drug kingpin; Lex Scott Davis, as his old girlfriend who has become a community activist; and Joivan Wade as her younger brother, torn between the lure of quick drug money and his sister’s unwavering morality. Rotimi Paul makes an absolutely frightening psycho and Steve Harris is an always welcome addition.

The first purge actually starts off unevenly, with many Staten Islanders who have stayed (and who have pocketed $5,000 in the process) choosing to have a boozy block party rather than murder each other. The New Founding Fathers of America soon decide to goose the violence level with a familiar tactic and the film moves into action hero territory, with Noel

turning into a John McClane-like hero, and our makeshift community banding together to fight an oppressive regime — very Yankee Doodle Dandy. The blood flows so much that in one sequence it splashes the camera itself.

The “Purge” films have never been very subtle and “The First Purge” is no different. The characters are barely one-dimensional and prone to doing stupid stuff, like wandering out alone during a night of mayhem.

But there’s no denying DeMonaco’s ability to conceive of a film that seems ripped from the headlines. “The First Purge” is hardly sci-fi in the face of neo-Nazis really marching in US streets, immigration policies that have been denounced as inhumane and a Congress awash in NRA donations.

One thing DeMonaco can’t do is avoid his own timeline. We know that the purges are still raging in 2039, so whatever happens in Staten Island can’t end them. That’s a truly depressing thought on this Independence Day holiday: There will be more blood in the streets, not less.

Review:

‘Ant-Man and The Wasp’ punches above its weight

ot since Animal, against the advice of Dr Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker, ingested Insta-Growth pills has a movie had as much fun with scale as “Ant-Man and The Wasp.”

Among the greatest threats to the shape-shifting heroes of the Marvel sequel are windshield wipers, salt shakers and seagulls. This is surely the first movie to weaponise that most fearsome of terrors: a giant Hello Kitty Pez dispenser. In one of the film’s finest moments, a loud, careening chase culminates in a dramatic fall into the ocean sounded not with an explosive splash but with a tiny ripple and a “Plink!”

In both scale and ambition, “AntMan and The Wasp” is an altogether more modest affair, and it’s so much the better for it. Most Marvel movies strenuously insist on how much they matter — how much a carefully stitched together comic-book apparatus hangs in the balance — with only an occasional aside to acknowledge their inherent silliness. But slapstick is in the DNA of “Ant-Man and The Wasp.”

For some Marvel devotees, “AntMan and The Wasp” will be a clever enough diversion in between the more main-event releases. But it’s pretty much exactly what I’d want in a superhero movie: a funny cast, zippy action scenes and not an infinity stone in sight.

The Marvel product has, it should be noted, grown more dynamic and varied in recent years. But if you’re not going to reach the mythic heights of “Black

Panther,” the light-hearted antics of “Ant-Man and The Wasp” are your next-best bet. As different as they are, the two films have one crucial thing in common: No outer space.

Just as “Black Panther” styled itself after a spy thriller, “Ant-Man” takes from the heist movie. The first instalment in 2015 was a somewhat muddled franchise debut, thanks to a late director shuffle. Peyton Reed, who took over production on the first one, is back here, and he has carved out a real identity for Paul Rudd’s character, among the most self-contained in Marvel’s “cinematic universe.”

And more than its predecessor, “Ant-Man and The Wasp” has adopted the goofball charm of its leading man.

Coming a few years after “Ant-Man,” Rudd’s Scott Lang is now under house arrest for his involvement in the Berlin showdown of “Captain America: Civil War.” When his 10-year-old daughter Cassie (Abby Ryder Fortson) isn’t around, he passes the time playing drums and learning magic tricks. With just days to go before Randall Park’s SHIELD agent is to remove Lang’s monitoring device, he’s summoned by the brains behind their last adventure: Dr. Hank Pym (a sometimes in-theway Michael Douglas) and Pym’s daughter Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), whose winged Ant-Man-like suit has earned her the Wasp moniker.

Pym believes his wife, Janet (Michelle Pfeiffer) has for the last 30 years been locked away in the “quantum realm,” a mind- and matterbending subatomic limbo that, it turns out, has predictably done curiously little damage to the indestructible Pfeiffer. A Technicolor blur of floating blobs, the quantum realm looks like a lava lamp’s dream of heaven.

To send someone into the realm on a rescue mission, Pym and Van Dyne have built a sophisticated laboratory many stories high that, with a click of a remote, they can shrink down to carryon size. Their plans bring them into contact with a black-market dealer

(Walton Goggins) and an old academic colleague of Pym’s (Laurence Fishburne). It also attracts the interest of the film’s villain, Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), whose tragic backstory has left her burning (figuratively) and blurry (literally) with anger for being robbed of a bodily existence.

The plot is fine but many of the pleasures of “Ant-Man and The Wasp” come from its digressions. And no one better breaks down the molecular structure of a Marvel movie than Michael Pena. Every time he takes the screen, he threatens to destabilise it with his chatterbox excitement. When

Pena’s Luis (Lang’s friend and business partner at X-Con Security) is given a truth serum, you pray for the movie to just let him keep talking until the end credits roll.

There are more gags, too. A malfunctioning Ant-Man suit turns Rudd enormous or embarrassingly child-sized. A Hot Wheels-riff on the “Bullitt” car chase tumbles down the hills of San Francisco. None of this is earth-shattering stuff, but that’s part of the fun of it. Here, for once, is a Marvel movie about saving one life, not a billion.

We very rarely reach the perfect stage.

Solarisation of the soil is a gift given us by the difficulty of raising worthwhile vegetables in the summer. We can use the heat of direct sunlight to kill off nematodes, destructive microscopic worm-like creatures. In cooler climates winter frosts help control nematodes, but here in the Bahamas we must take advantage of our summer months. If you have not laid down clear plastic yet, do it soon and you will have the three warmest months to work with.

The soil beneath the plastic should be wet and should be watered weekly to maintain heat-transmitting moisture. When you know heavy rain is coming you can remove the sheeting to get a good drenching and replace it when the rain is over. Not too arduous a task in the general scheme of things. Easier than weeding, for instance, and if you do not lay plastic sheeting you will certainly get weeds.

Although summer is the rainy season, we still get days in a row without rain. If you are growing plants in pots they will need to be watered no matter how regularly it rains. The herbs and other potted plants you have in shade will probably have their share of showers reduced so remember to water them regularly.

Summertime is the season of greatest insect activity and that may include scale insects on flowering shrubs or fruit trees that are in production. You may discover an infestation through the presence of sooty mould, the blackening of leaves with mildew. Sooty mould is

not a problem; it is an indication that a problem exists.

Scale and other sucking insects tuck their proboscises into the green layer below the bark of branches and suck sap. They excrete digested sap in the form of honeydew, a sugary liquid that falls onto nearby leaves and gets attacked by mildew spores, turning black. If the layer of mould is thick the affected leaves will die and drop.

The recommended treatment for scale insects is dormant oil. Problem is, apply dormant oil at this time of year and you will end up with fried foliage. If the infestation is not extensive you may be able to control it by scraping off scale insects with your thumbnail or by dabbing them with a cotton bud dipped into alcohol or dormant oil. If you have sooty mould, however, it is likely your infestation is widespread and needs more intensive treatment.

This can be provided by soap.

Make a fairly strong soap solution of one part liquid soap to four parts water and use that to spray the affected area. Do not use dishwashing detergent, only soap. The scale insects will be imbedded in the branches rather than the leaves so take care to wet the branches thoroughly. The exercise is not to clean the leaves but to attack the scale insects.

Spray the infected area every two weeks or so. If the problem does not get solved to your satisfaction remember when the cool weather of December and January comes to return to the scene of the battle and use heavier artillery - dormant oil.

Keep an eye on your mature desert roses. Their seed pods often form in secret and you only notice

their presence when the seeds have been borne away on their thistledown. When the seedcase hardens it is a good idea to cover it with a small paper bag and inspect it every day. I like to just bury the seeds and have the thistledown sticking up from the seed box like plumage. The rate of success for desert rose seed germination is high.

Summer thunderstorms often bring strong gusts of wind that break off branches from Bridal Bouquet frangipani (plumeria) shrubs. You can take tip cuttings from these by cutting the branch away and leaving about three inches of stalk below the flowers. Ease this into a vase of damp potting soil and water regularly by slipping two or three ice cubes under the leaves and onto the surface of the soil. Keep the vase in shade and you will have an attractive ornamental for a week or so. In about three months the rooted tip cutting could be transplanted to the garden. I have had a success rate of more than 50 per cent with bridal bouquet tip cuttings.

The use of ice cubes for delicate watering such as of succulents and cuttings is even more gentle and controllable than a mist spray. The precise amount of water needed can be introduced using ice cubes that are slowly and efficiently absorbed into the soil. There is no run through the sides of soil in a pot leaving a core of relatively dry mix in the centre. Decompress on the playful side of paradise

A

word of advice, do not ignore the signals your body sends out. Often they indicate in the most clear way when it is time to pause and take a break from your regular routine.

I for one know what my body is saying when, after having a full six to eight hours sleep, I am still struggling to get myself together in the morning.

This lack of motivation is also accompanied by non-stop “teeth kissing” at various intervals. And even when I manage to pull myself through the first part of the morning, once at my workplace I have to take a deep breath before getting out the car and to face another day. All of this signals physical and mental exhaustion for me.

I was at this point a few weeks ago with no pending travel plans or vacation in sight. But my body wasn’t telling a lie; it wanted to relax somewhere near a pool or beach.

So I dedicated a whole weekend to first and foremost taking care of myself, and secondly to unwind while also having the option to engage in fun activities that I wouldn’t ordinarily.

Breezes Bahamas Resort & Spa was the place I chose to facilitate my time of self-care and decompression last weekend. Though it wasn’t my first time at Breezes (I went their previously on a day and night pass) I went with an open mind and eager for a new experience.

All inclusive

Breezes made great sense for my two-night stay from Friday to Sunday, mainly because it is an all inclusive resort. I love knowing that once my room is booked everything else is as well. You don’t have to worry about budgeting for water, sporting and land activities, taxes, and especially food and beverages.

Food and beverages can turn into a great expense, especially over an entire weekend. As a matter of fact, some

people blow a hole in their budgets with just one night of drinking and partying.

The only things that incur an additional cost at Breezes are services at the Blue Mahoe Seaside Spa, the beach cabanas which are available for daily rental, a private dinner for two on the beach, and purchases at the gift shop. Breezes is currently running a special local rate at $150 per person.

Adventure

Breezes is one of the only resorts on the island that allows guests to rock climb or swing like an acrobat on a flying trapeze.

Given that I am an adventurous person, those activities were met with great enthusiasm from me. So imagine my brief disappointment when approaching the rock wall all geared up I realised I couldn’t participate in the activity due to my acrylic nails. Rock climbing involves holding on to the bars on the wall and pulling yourself up. And the flying trapeze? I had failed to pack any socks, and those are a requirement for starting your circus training.

Nevertheless, there was still lots more for me to do. I decided to kayak instead, and believe me when I say kayaking is not as easy as it looks, at least at first. After a short lesson I got the hang of it and found myself out in the deep blues of our ocean. This was a fun and truly relaxing experience.

Apart from those activities guests can use paddle boards, paddle boats, sail boats, participate in sumo wrestling, bouncy boxing, beach volleyball, tennis lessons and more.

Where’s the party?

One of the things I like most about Breezes is the fact that there is always something going on. If you are not an adventurous person and not fond of water sporting activities, there is always a schedule of games happening by the pool.

You can compete in pool volleyball with other guests and participate in fun games like the balloon toss. There is a poolside DJ playing all the hottest hits so you can dance if you feel like it. When I was not engaging in a water activity, I was chilling out by the pool, enjoying the food, drinks and the fun vibes.

At nighttime there is a variety show that takes place featuring Funky D and the Summer Breeze band as well as a Junkanoo Jamboree show. When that is done all roads lead to Club Hurricane Disco where you can leave your troubles and worries on the dance floor.

Even if you have stayed at the resort for a weekend or on a day pass before, I can recommend trying Breezes for a staycation.

Approaching it with a new perspective and willingness to immerse yourself in the many activities the property has to offer will certainly deliver that promised “playful side of paradise” experience.

From bombshell to

inventor

Sir Christopher Ondaatje reveals the controversial life of a Viennese actress who shot to fame with a nude swimming scene and who later in life became an inventor who contributed to the development of Wi-Fi.

H

edy Lamarr was born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in Vienna, Austria – the only daughter of Gertrude Kiesler, a pianist, and Emil Kiesler, a successful bank director. Her mother had converted from Judaism to Catholicism and raised her daughter as a Christian.

Lamarr helped get her mother to the United States out of Austria after it had been absorbed by the Third Reich.

In the late 1920s Lamarr was discovered as an actress and brought to Berlin by producer Max Reinhardt.

She returned to Vienna to work in the film industry – first as a script girl and then as an actress. Her rise to movie stardom was meteoric. In 1930, she had a bit part in “Money on the Street” (1930), and another small role in “Storm in a Water Glass” (1931); a bigger part in “The Trunks of Mr O F” (1931) and a lead role in “No Money Needed” (1932).

When she was 18 years old Lamarr became an international sensation in Gustav Machaty’s film “Ecstasy” (1933) in which she played the part of the neglected young wife of an indifferent older man. The film was both celebrated and notorious for portraying nude scenes of Lamarr swimming and running through the woods, and also of Lamarr’s face in the throes of an orgasm – the first ever shown in a popular film. Disillusioned by her nude scenes, which she did not know were being filmed with a telephoto lens, she refused other roles. However, the film was regarded as an artistic work, won an award in Rome, but it was banned in the United States and in Germany.

Instead, she took a number of stage roles – mostly in Vienna – which earned her further critical acclaim.

She had many admirers, one of whom, Friedrich Mandl, a wealthy Austrian military arms merchant and munitions manufacturer, became obsessed with her. His constant attention and immense financial power eventually won her attention. She was 18 years old and he was 33. He was

also known to have strong fascist ties to Benito Mussolini, and later to Adolf Hitler. They were married in August 1933 and, being a jealous and controlling husband, he banned Lamarr from pursuing her career. She later claimed that he kept her a virtual prisoner in his castle, Schloss Schwarzenau.

Dictators of both Italy and Germany attended lavish parties at the Mandl castle and she was forced to accompany Mandl to business and other meetings where he conferred with scientists and professionals involved in military technology.

Increasingly solitary and a virtual prisoner, Lamarr disguised herself as a farm girl and left Mandl and Austria, taking with her jewels in order to survive her secret escape.

“I knew very soon that I could never be an actress while I was his wife ... He was the absolute monarch in his marriage ... I was like a doll. I was like a thing, some sort of art which had to be guarded – and imprisoned – having no mind, no life on its own.”

Lamarr fled to Paris, where in 1937 she met Louis B Mayer, co-founder of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios (MGM), who was scouting for acting talent. She had already acquired a name for herself as “The Ecstasy Lady”, but struck by her beauty and personality, Mayer brought her to Hollywood in 1938, made her change her name to Hedy Lamarr, and promoted her as “The World’s Most Beautiful Woman”.

Almost immediately Louis B Mayer loaned Lamarr out to producer Walter Wanger who was filming “Algiers” (1938). She was cast in the leading role opposite Charles Boyer. The film was an immediate sensation. When American audiences first saw Lamarr on screen her beauty literally caused them to gasp, although they had not even been exposed to her scandalous nude scenes in “Ecstasy”. Thereafter, Lamarr was usually cast as an exotic beauty and seductress. Josef von Sternberg directed her opposite Spen- Lamarr and her co-star Clarke Gable in “Comrade X” (1940) cer Tracy in “I Take This Woman”, but he was replaced and the film not opposite James Stewart in “Come Live 1942. Despite her popularity and screen success, Lamarr felt out of place in Hollywood and avoided crowds and public places. She was very much the foreigner. Author Howard Sharpe is quoted as saying:

“Hedy has the most incredible personal sophistication. She knows the peculiarly European art of being womanly; she knows what men want in a beautiful woman, what attracts them, and she forces herself to be these things.

She has magnetism with warmth, something that neither Dietrich nor Garbo has managed to achieve.”

When Hedy Lamarr left MGM in 1945 she formed a production company with Jack Shertok and made “The Strange Woman” (1946). It was not very successful. They then made “Dishonoured Lady” (1947), followed by a comedy with Robert Cummings, “Let’s Live a Little” (1948), also not a profitable venture. But she retained her screen image and popularity and went on to her biggest screen success playing Delilah opposite Victor Mature in “Samson and Delilah” (1949). It was to be her highest grossing film, which was to go on to win two Oscars.

Lamarr was lured back to MGM to make the film noir “A Lady Without Passport” (1950) which was not a success. “Copper Canyon” (1950) with Ray Milland and “My Favourite Spy” (1951) with Bob Hope for Paramount were more successful. After that her Hollywood career went into decline.

She lost her box office appeal and had to go to Italy to play multiple roles in “Loves of Three Queens” (1954), which she produced. She appeared in “The Story of Mankind” in 1957. “The Female Animal” (1958) was her last film.

Hedy Lamarr wasn’t entirely secluded during and after her Hollywood years. She was married and divorced six times. After her first marriage to Friedrich Mandl (divorced in 1937) she married Gene Markey (1939-1941), a screenwriter and they had one adopted son sired by John Loder who she married in CONTINUES 1943. They had two ON PAGE other children but 24 were divorced in 1947, after which she

Always interested in science, inventing was her hobby. She created an improved traffic light, and even a tablet that would dissolve in water to create a carbonated drink. Howard Hughes, an admirer, actively supported her creativity and put his team of engineers at her disposal. During World War II she learned that radio-controlled torpedoes could be re-directed and set off course. With some of the knowledge she had gleaned from her first husband, and with the help of George Antheil, a composer and pianist, she thought up a frequency-hopping signal that could not be re-directed. They patented their frequency-hopping system in 1942, but the US Navy refused to consider using an invention from outside the military. However, in 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, a variation of the Lamarr/Antheil invention was used on US Navy ships and contributed to the development of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. In 2014, both Lamarr and Antheil

were posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Lamarr became a citizen of the United States in 1953. Her autobiography “Ecstasy and Me” was published in 1966. That year she was arrested for shoplifting in Los Angeles – although the charges were later dropped. In 1991, she was again arrested in Florida for stealing laxatives and eye drops.

The charges were again dropped. In the 1970s she retreated almost totally from public life, settling in Miami Beach. She was offered several film scripts but refused them all. Her attempts at plastic surgery were failures and the results were disastrous.

She was addicted to pills, and spent the last years of her life constantly on the telephone.

Hedy Lamarr died of heart failure in Casselberry, Florida on January 19, 2000. As she requested, her ashes were spread by her son Anthony Loder in Austria’s Vienna Woods. She was given an honorary grave in Vienna’s Central Cemetery.

Another thing changed in 1966 and had even more effect on Bahamian life – the Bahamian Dollar was introduced on May 25, bringing an end to Pounds, Shillings and Pence.

Archaeologists discover GrecoRoman era building in Egypt CAIRO (AP) – Egyptian archaeologists say they have discovered parts of a huge red brick building dating back to the Greco-Roman period north of Cairo.

The Antiquities Ministry says Wednesday the building was found in the Sa El-Hagar archaeological site in Gharbia province.

It says archaeologists found a gold coin depicting King Ptolemy III, who ruled Egypt in the 3rd century BC and was an ancestor of the

famed Cleopatra. It says the coin was made during the reign of King Ptolemy IV in memory of his father.

The ministry says archaeologists have unearthed other artifacts in the area, including pottery vessels, terracotta statues, bronze tools and a small statue of a ram.

Egypt hopes such discoveries will spur tourism, which has suffered from political turmoil following the 2011 uprising.

When dawn breaks

E

verybody is very familiar with the wonderful hymn “Morning Has Broken”. Even if you are not a church-going person you would have heard it sang by Cat Stevens in the 1980s and it remains a classic until today.

I frequently have cause to wake early and catch dawn nowadays thanks to my over-exuberant potcakes who feel that a symphony of howls and barks is a fitting way to start their day.

Years ago (or not all that long ago actually) I would have been very angry to have my beauty sleep disturbed, but I have changed.

I wake up and stumble to the door, open it and see the garden as if for the first time.

The jasmine fills the air with a sweet and pungent aroma, so strong you feel it stick to you. The dogs scamper out and on the horizon there is a faint golden glow…dawn.

“Morning has broken like the first morn.”

Upon further investigation the grass is wet beneath my bare feet, dew provided by nature to water the grass and quench the thirsty leaves and cover the house with paw prints. I stand there watching the light diffuse across the sky, full of hope and glory…

“Praise for the Morning” indeed.

Very quietly I move into the centre of the garden and I listen…an amazing symphony of different bird songs fills the air, loud ones, soft ones; impatient chirping, deep squawking, a cacophony of sound that to my ears makes up one of the most spectacular concerts on earth. “Praise for them springing fresh from the world.”

It is Summer, so the morning brings a freshness and crispness that we do not enjoy during the day. But at dawn all of nature appears to be bathed in a golden glow of well-being.

A brave little lizard runs across the pathway, narrowly missing my toes, and fortunately totally unobserved by the hunters in my potcake pack. The lizard always finds a tree to scamper up, leaving my dogs disappointed that the chase is over as they gaze up the tree in defeat.

The spell is broken by the hash and raspy call of the Poor Joe who has been disturbed out of his slumber by the canal.

Poor Joe and Boss have had a lovehate relationship for years. Poor Joe, also known as a Gaulin, taunts Boss from unreachable posts around the gardens, swooping low over Boss and cackling at him in jest before flying away to safety, leaving Boss frustrated and annoyed. However, the negativity does not last long, the spell is cast again, like a stone thrown into water and the peaceful sounds of the morning return. The smaller birds resume their beautiful concert, chirping out the morning instructions to each other... “Blackbird has spoken” ...the boys continue

their peaceful inspection of every bush, plant and leaf to ensure that no intruder has ventured in to their walled kingdom.

All this time the light becomes brighter imperceptibly slowly, a gradual change on the horizon, the sun peeking over the trees to indeed confirm, “Morning has broken…”

As I turn to go back in the house a rapid movement catches my eye over by the bottlebrush tree. The light is still a little limited, it takes me a few seconds to see what that movement was. Busily drinking the nectar from my bottlebrush tree is the smallest of

humming birds, tiny gossamer wings flapping so fast you can barely see them, dashing from flower to flower.

What a privilege to watch this little miracle fist thing in the morning.

Long ago we planted the bottlebrush tree because we had been told that it would attract humming birds, and over the years we have enjoyed being the hosts to hummingbird families who chose this tree to build their nests and bring up their babies.

The sun is high in the sky now, and I can feel the heat on my back, the dogs are ready to return to their bowls of water, early milk bones and cool tiles. My morning coffee beckons, yet I almost feel that the pull of nature is too strong to ignore and am reluctant to break the spell by turning and walking back into the house. But it will still be there to enjoy tomorrow, or will it? Unless we are more mindful of the environment and nature, these experiences will become less frequent, until children will have to read accounts such as this to know the joys of savouring nature at is most simple.

As the custodians of the world today it is our most sacred duty to do more to protect and preserve. Yet on so many occasions we appear to be on a mission of destruction with a callous disregard of the fragile victims that lie in the wake of our progress.

ood morning! Samuel, the dog whisperer here! I am going to tell you today about Flowers, one of the dogs available for adoption at the Bahamas Humane Society.

As you can see from our photo together, she’s sweet and loving and likes children. Flowers is about 15 months old. During our photo shoot she left the outside cats alone so I’m pretty sure her new home could have a cat or two, and also a dog! Flowers is welcome to stay at the BHS for as long as need be, since it is a no-kill shelter, but she’d prefer to be in a home of her own.
