Poker Run racers 'Unleash The Beast' at Monster Beach Party

H

undreds of boaters took part in the ‘Unleash The Beast’ Monster Energy Beach Party Obstacle Course during the forth-annual Bahamas Poker Run event, which took place on June 29. The Caribbean Bottling Company (CBC) was the non-alcoholic beverage sponsor, and kept participants hydrated as they made their way around various beaches in northern Eleuthera.

Boating enthusiasts from around the Bahamas and abroad took part in the fullday boating convoy, with the aim to collect playing cards for an opportunity to win prizes.

After two stops, the day of cruising picturesque Bahamian waters culminated in a private beach party that included a the ‘Unleash The Beast’ obstacle course that featured a number of fun games and gave boaters the chance to win exclusive Monster gear.

“We are grateful for Caribbean Bottling Company’s support since the inception of Bahamas Poker Run (BPR), keeping our bar stocked with popular mixers from Schweppes and Coca-Cola.” said Shane Freedman, cofounder of the Bahamas Poker Run. “To up the ante in the event’s fourth year, Monster Energy was included, which was not only a welcomed refreshment for Poker Run participants, it was an exciting infusion of fun and sport.”

The Bahamas Poker Run is a fun day for boaters, but the event also raises vital funding for the Bahamas National Trust. This year, the organisation will once again make a donation to be used towards the parks’ management and upkeep.

He has spent his entire life on stage, singing many different musical genres. But as he tells Cara Hunt, his true love has always been jazz. Now, as he juggles his day job with being a musician, he hopes for international stardom and maybe one day performing with his dream duet partner, Sir Elton John.

sano Neely first realised his singing voice had the “it” factor when he was just 11 years old.

Even at that young age he had already been singing for years, but that was when he got his first taste of international exposure.

“I was 11 years old and I was invited to sing at this conference called Manna From Heaven by the late Dr Myles Munroe and Patrica Bazard.

The guest speaker at the conference was famous Israeli televangelist Benny Hinn, who is best known for his “Miracle Crusades” revival meetings and faith healing summits.

The summit aired on the Trinity Broadcast Network (TBN) for over a month and was seen by millions of people all over the world.

“Before that, I grown up in the All Saints Anglican Church and singing there and in various talent shows. My aunt, Kim Bodie, was a banker and so she would hire me to sing at the opening of various events and all of her functions,” he said.

“I remember for the first performance I sang the song ‘Good Morning, Mr Fisher’ and I was wearing overalls and a straw hat. I had been singing in the children’s choir formed by Patrica Bazard. She was like a grandmother to me. She had such an impact on my life and she always inspired me to keep going no matter what. People knew me, but after the Benny Hinn event I started getting hired to do many more events like weddings and funerals.”

He has been singing ever since, at special events and at various hotels.

And he has never stopped honing his musical talents – taking voice and music lessons with Paul Hanna and Lee B Callender. He also plays the jazz harmonica.

While Osano said he enjoys singing all types of music, especially golden oldies – “they are the best to sing when you have an audience of drunken people” – his heart lies with jazz music.

It is probably the type of music he is best known for.

In 2008 and 2009 he had the opportunity to attend a music summer programme hosted by the Duke Ellington School of Music in Washington, DC. “It was hosted by the lecturers of that school and Howard University.

I can very well remember they had a live instrument session and that was when I heard the double bass, the Steinway piano; it was just a different type of music. I just knew that it was music for me and I have been singing it ever since,” he said.

His jazz idol is probably Mr Bojangles himself, Sammy Davis, Jr. “He was a hero in the civil rights movement. He was one of the forerunners when it came to black talent during that period in history, that Rat Pack era,” he said.

However, when it comes to other genres, Osano’s idea of a dream duet would be with the Rocketman – Sir Elton John.

“When I am working at hotels I sung a lot of Elton John songs and I just love his music. And he wrote the songs for ‘The Lion King’, and who doesn’t love ‘The Lion King?’”

When he’s not performing, he is passionate about helping other local musicians gain a foothold in the industry. He said it’s not only tough to break into the music industry, but equally difficult to remain relevant.

“In five to 10 years I would love to have made a bigger name for myself internationally. Someone asked me if I would prefer to be rich or be famous, and I said, ‘You can keep the money’, because as a songwriter and performer the thing that you want the most is for people to know your voice and sing your songs, and that is what I want to be: an internationally known jazz singer.”

When he is not performing he is working on his courier company, Island Gofer Enterprise.

“I came up with the idea when I was in living

in Tennessee and saw the ease of which you could just order stuff and it came directly to your doorstep, and I wondered why we couldn’t do that in that in the Bahamas.

“It was around the same time that a lot of people were having difficulty with some of the local couriers and so I started my company which allows people to order things and then we deliver it to their door. We deliver a lot to Eleuthera and some of the Family Islands, and business has grown steadily. Right now it is a home-based business, but the next step is we are looking to expand to a storefront. That would allow us to capture more foot traffic, hopefully in time for Thanksgiving shopping,” he said.

‘Da Bush Cook’ opens second location

A

s a chef, Corey Small is passionate about providing his customers with a culinary experience that is truly out of the ordinary.

The 30-year-old is the owner of Flavors Catering and Da Bush Cook, and is well known for his eclectic menus.

“Being a good chef is about more than just food, it’s about arranging the right menu, meeting and exceeding clients’ expectations, managing your kitchen and staff effectively, and ensuring your service makes every client feels special,” he said.

“The term ‘Bush Cook’ was a nickname given to me during my training as a chef because I ‘Macgyvered’ a lot in the kitchen. When my business partner and I were brainstorming one night we decided that we just wanted to name it something casual and fun, something so good it required no rules. It’s a name that gets people thinking about what we have to offer and the out of the box approach to the food experience.”

Although he grew up watching his father cook all the time, Corey originally had dreams of being an attorney.

“But somewhere between classes and internships the kitchen kept calling me.”

So rather than attend law school, he enrolled in the College of the Bahamas.

“Watching (my Dad) throughout the years, I picked up a few tricks and learned to make flavourful dishes very early on in life, and he worked with some of the best chefs in the country,” he said.

Corey said opening his own business has been challenging, yet very rewarding.

“There’s so many things that make you want to quit, become discouraged, find a job and just say forget this.

you walk in and see an employee who has been struggling in an area making an improvement, or you get a really busy day and you’re short-staffed but make it happen and see your team push through. It’s like, ‘yeah, we can do this’ and you keep going,” he said.

Three years in, Corey is now in the process of opening a second location on Boyd Road; a move he says is vital to reach a wider clientele.

“The reality is the food industry thrives on volume in sales.

More locations increase your volume of sales, which will eventually increase your profits.

“Also, convenience is a determining factor for many customers. With the heat and traffic, people want to have their favourite food spot as close to them as possible. Boyd Road allows us to reach a more central audience, specifically our UB students and persons who can walk to us,” he explained.

One reason he feels his business has done well is that it remains relevant and innovative, always offering something new for customers to try.

“First of all, we stay relevant so we create based on topics and themes we know people would relate to. Second, it would be the graphics. We like very clear imagery that we know will grasp the attention of our customers.

Finally, we keep up with social media; we are always posting, always engaging our customers, which keeps them engaged and keeps us being seen and a hot topic,” he said.

He added that team management is also extremely important.

“Making the investment in a human resources consultant, training courses, and better team benefits and incentives, has proven to be the best decision we’ve made. We haven’t always gotten it right, but we’ve definitely improved,” he said.

Multi-regional cuisine in Bahamian Latitudes

hether it’s with its Meze Grill on Cable Beach, the Swimming Pig Pub at Baha Mar, Smugglers in Downtown Nassau, or the Chippy’s Fish N’ Chips takeaway in Sandy Port – the Titan Hospitality group has been making quite an impact on the local culinary scene for the past few years.

Now, the team is working its magic on the eastern side of the island with the recent opening of a unique waterfront dining experience named Latitudes.

Located at the Nassau Harbour Club, guests of Latitudes are able to enjoy spectacular views of Nassau’s picturesque harbour and a varied menu that offers multi-regional cuisine, including seafood, freshly made pizzas, sushi and teppanyaki.

Tribune Weekend spoke with General Manager Giovanni Tagliamonte, who took us on a walk around the restaurant and its different areas.

“This is the first one in the East, finally,” he said of Titan’s latest venture. “I love it because since we have opened all locals come here and these persons make the restaurant more appealing. Last night was one of our busiest nights. The bar is always packed and I have been loving it. Here is close to home for persons that don’t want to drive West. We already have regulars from the last two weeks that we have been open, so I am really pleased.”

The Latitudes concept, he said, is unique due to its style of kitchen. The menu options allow guests to enjoy everything from pizza to ribs, to sushi.

“Normally you would have to go to two different restaurants to enjoy that.

So our goal is to have you come here not to try one thing, but to be able to come on Wednesday for pizza, Thursday for sushi and Friday for pasta and much more. We have an Argentinian grill, I love it. Then there is the Italian pizza oven where you can put a pizza inside and within three minutes the pizza is ready. And this is for any kind of pizza. It rotates like five to six times and then it is out,” he said.

At the restaurant’s entrance is where you find the deli which prepares fresh bread and bakes cakes every day. Guests can come in and enjoy the lounge area and have a Starbucks coffee. Another special area is the outdoor balcony patio which can be used as a private dining room for special

events and banquets. For now it is open for smokers.

Then there are the hibachi (grill) tables that are offered only during the evenings per reservation.

There are available slots at 6.30pm, 7.30pm, 8.30pm, and 9.30pm, for a minimum of four people and a maximum of eight per table.

“The Asian chefs here at the hibachi station show their skills, throwing food to everyone and they have to catch it. It is really fun and a lot of interaction with the chef. It is very entertaining for families and kids, so we always advertise for families to try it out because kids love it,” said Giovanni.

He said it is important for them to stay consistent with the quality of service. Titan Hospitality employees, he said, go through intense training every time the organisation opens up a new restaurant.

“We give opportunities to young persons to show them what they are capable of and give them a chance. Most of these guys here have been with me for the last two months, some of them have never worked in hospitality and now they are servers who enjoy it.

“Our goal is to also be consistent in food, the environment and music. And this for me are all the ingredients needed to make a perfect experience. We focus on detail and little things that makes us unique. We want to focus on customers’ needs,” said Giovanni, who can be often seen on the floor of the restaurant, greeting guests, communicating with employees and socialising.

He believes the Latitudes team is creating something you can normally only find in big cities like Miami or Atlanta.

“For us, from the moment you enter the door to the moment you leave you will notice our energies here are very positive. For the last few months before opening we spent like six hours together as a staff and we sat down and read the menu. There were words on the menu that I didn’t even know existed and when they asked what they were, I connected with them and said, ‘I’m with you, let’s figure it out together’, and they appreciated it. I have a good team behind me that I trust to keep up the standards,” said Giovanni.

Blowing up with ideas

C

ecile Williams-Bethel’s road to entrepreneurship has been a long and unexpected one.

She started her first “side hustle” back in 2001 in the form of a cookie bouquet business. She soon felt the need to “amp up” the bouquets and the solution she came up with was to use balloons. She began to research all of decorative options balloons offered. This took her to an international balloon convention in Chicago in October of 2001. She remembers walking out of that convention resolved to bring innovative balloon décor to the Bahamas to help her customers create lasting memories. Thus, The Balloon People was born.

Cecile describes herself as a very industrious woman. She has taught her children the importance of a good education and a good job, but has also imparted on them that a side hustle is no disgrace.

“For many years (Balloon People) remained my side gig, but I have never treated it as such. Continuous training and retraining, educating and innovating, and bringing new ideas home and remaining on the cutting edge of what is new in the balloon industry is very important to me,” she said.

Cecile said it be a cliché, but the very biggest inspiration has been her mother, Alma Louise Rolle-Williams, who died in 2000, but whose legacy lives on. The example her mother set and the lessons she taught have helped Cecile in all her business ventures over the years.

Most people believe that balloons are simple, temporary decorations, but with The Balloon People Cecile’s goal is to show that the possibilities are endless and that balloon decorating is truly an art form.

The Balloon People is a member of the Pro Environmental Balloon Alliance (PEBA), a global group that promotes environmental responsibility in the balloon industry. And Cecile’s

team make an effort to educate customers and the public on the responsible use and disposing of balloons. Cecile does not offer helium balloons, which are often used in special release ceremonies, but prefers to speak with clients to find alternative ways to mark an occasion.

Products and services at The Balloon People are varied. They run the gamut from simple inflations to elaborate décor structures, providing the best in both classic and organic balloons.

“We can also personalise balloons with vinyl lettering and we can include your own photos on balloons. Providing décor to the corporate market is our specialty, but we absolutely love extending our creativity to setting the stage for any and every social occasion.

We not only provide balloon décor, but we have expanded our services in an attempt to bring a one-stop solution to our clients,” she said, adding that they now offer rentals of party equipment.

Most recently, she has also added the Da Poppin’ Popcorn gourmet treats company to her roster of businesses.

She said business is booming at The Balloon People, and it is by God’s grace she have come this far. With the Bahamas’ Independence Day just around the corner, Cecile and her team are preparing fun and beautiful decorations in black, yellow and aquamarine.

Next month, The Balloon People will be moving into a new storefront at the Pineapple Bay Plaza on Solider Road. Cecile also has some exciting news which she will be releasing soon regarding becoming a wholesale distributor for Gemar Balloons, Europe’s largest latex balloon manufacturer.

Baha Mar announces ‘The Voice’ themed Independence concert

aha Mar has kicked off its Summer Series featuring past winners and audience favourites from the hit TV show “The Voice”. Every Saturday, the resort will be playing host to a different singer from the seventime Emmy Award winning NBC show.

While last night’s opening performance and the regular Saturday shows, which continue until August 3, are only for guests of Baha Mar, the resort’s Independence Day Celebration on July 10 will be open to the general public.

On that night, season eight fan-favourite Blaze Johnson returns to his native Bahamas.

Blaze won over celebrity coach Adam Levine and millions of fans in 2015 with his renditions of pop singles and soulful ballads. He will perform at Baha Mar for the first time this Summer to headline the Independence Day concert.

SEVEN young pageant queens from across the Bahamas are travelling today to compete at the International Junior Miss Scholarship Programme in Orlando, Florida The International Junior Miss (IJM) contestants are Junior Princess Nia-Elizabeth; Princess Kirstina Simmons; IJM Preteen Johnell Ramsey; IJM Preteen Kaynia Minnis, a student of Laurel Primary in Eleuthera; IJM Northern Bahamas Preteen Shyla Marie Cartwright; IJM Southern

Bahamas Teen Perica Carroll, and IJM Bahamas Teen T’Azure Saunders.

Dominicka Smith, director of the pageant programme, is expecting that all the girls will “do well this year and represent their country.”

She said all of the contestants, though young, have a great deal experience under their belts and will hopefully win a few competitions as well as bring back the coveted title. The package prize is worth over $100,000.

“They will have an opportunity to attend a workshop with the model coach Lu Sierra, attend Universal Studios with the other queens, a pyjama party, on-stage rehearsal, photoshoots, and so much more,” said Ms Smith.

They will meet other contestants from places like South Africa, Australia, Japan and Brazil, just to name a few. The competition is expected to have 263 contestants.

New talk show bets on candid chats

atching the “Know Filter” show with host Gina Knowles is like sitting down for a chat with an old friend.

By the end of the conversation you’re all caught up on the news of the day, and had a ball at the same time.

Gina is the co-founder of the Facebook support group and charity organisation HeadKnowles.

“Everyone who knows me, knows how animated I am, and so for a long time people would tell me I need to get my own show,” she told Tribune Weekend.

The opportunity finally presented itself in the form of “Know Filter”, a weekly internet talk show she describes as “candid but relaxed.”

“It’s always a candid conversation. (The guests) don’t know in advance what we are going to talk about. That is what makes the flow so good.

Gina said that she wanted her show to be different from other shows on the airwaves.

“I wanted my show to be very light and real. I ask people about their lives; I want to get to know the real person. I also didn’t want to be like the other talk shows where there is so just so much rowing and the conversation is so harsh,” she said.

“I have always been about being the change that you want to see come about and that is the motto that I have for this show. I am the voice to ask the questions that people are afraid to voice, because I am not afraid to ask those hard questions. I also hate gossip, so for me I prefer to go straight to the horse’s mouth

Although the show only airs once a week, Gina said quite a

lot of work goes into preparing for it and taping it. Going forward she would like to take the show to an international market as well.

“My goal is to become more global, so I realise that every time I talk it can’t just be about the Bahamas. I have to start talking about more

worldly things, to catch more viewers globally. Because I want to stretch further across the world,” she said.

“I want to reach out to more people and every day be a light in someone’s eyes. I wish I could give everyone a car like Ellen and Oprah. I like the fact that I am entertaining people and making them happy. But one day I will get to their level.”

During her first season, she interviewed well-known Bahamians such as Leslie Miller, Jerome Sawyer, Carl Bethel, Sawyer Boy and Dr Duane Sands, and is already excited about planning her second season.

The new season will start July 24. It is an internet show available on Rev Internet, KnowFilter Facebook and on YouTube.

Karin says: “While the others went too young, Sadie maybe went a bit too old. I like the ensemble, but it does look very sophisticated. However, I think she gets away with it. I like that she bucked the trend and went with pants, and I do like the little sheer cape.”

Cara says: “This is another one of those looks where that little extra accent takes it from ‘all right’ to ‘weird’.

In this case, it’s the cape that ruins the look. It’s just so unnecessary. And the pants needed to be fitted better, but the overall I like the idea of the outfit.”

Karin says: “Hate everything about it. First of all, the dress looks too short on her; like it’s not really meant to be a mini dress at all. The overall flame coloured sequins are tragic, as are the long sleeves and the weirdly cinched waist. And I’m all for contrasting colours, but why in the world did she pick those horrid bright blue sandals?”

Cara says: “This dress isn’t that bad. I mean, I’ve seen sequin dresses that were much worse (if we’re damning with faint praise here). And the slight ombre action helps it out a little, but what in the world is going on with those shoes?”

Karin says: “The sparkly top half is boring and the strange decision to have the bottom be sheer is just bizarre; not interesting. It’s like you are seeing the shift she’s wearing underneath. And the sheerness also doesn’t hide her ugly platform sandals (of all things the style choices...).”

Cara says: “I was all for this dress because the top is nice and the rhinestones were working for me, until I got to the sheer bottom. I am not here for that; it looks very weird and those cut-off-theankles sandals don’t help.”

A house sitter becomes a target in ‘Lock Every Door’

A

historical New York City apartment building complete with wealthy celebrity residents, gargoyles and a storied legacy including the setting of a bestselling book would seem to be the ideal place to call home. The location couldn’t be better, even if the stay is temporary, a three-month apartmentsitting stint, thinks Jules Larsen, the young, down-on-her-luck heroine in the deliciously frightening “Lock Every Door.”

Jules can’t believe that the ad for house sitter is for a luxury apartment at the Bartholomew, the locale of her favourite novel. Located near the more famous Dakota and the San Remo, the Bartholomew — “a mere wisp of thing” only 13 stories tall — had its own lore. Unlike those other

“behemoths,” the Bartholomew was “small, intricate, memorable.”

In addition to staying in her dream apartment, the job would help Jules rebuild her life. Jobless since her company downsized and homeless since she moved out of her cheating boyfriend’s apartment, Jules has been sleeping on her only friend’s couch. The job would give her a place to live and pay $12,000 for the three months, giving her time to look for employment.

The job comes with just a few rules — no visitors, ever; no spending an entire night away; no bothering the residents or gossiping about them.

Seems fair, thinks Jules, who ignores that adage, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is.

Faster than one can say “Rosemary’s Baby,” Jules begins to notice oddities in the building, strange sounds and

unusual architecture. Even the wallpaper takes on a sinister feeling. Are those really flowers or eyes watching her? News stories about mysterious deaths and rumours of hauntings are forwarded to her by a friend. Jules strikes up a friendship with another apartment sitter who disappears one night. Turns out the young woman isn’t the only apartment sitter who abruptly left.

Tension accelerates with each day’s stay as Riley Sager keeps the suspense grounded in reality in his third novel.

The appealing Jules has an inner strength but also an acute vulnerability that stems from being alone in the world since her sister disappeared four years before, followed by her parents’ death. Jules wants to belong and to have a home. She believes she has found that, however temporarily, especially when it seems the author of

her favourite book takes an interest in her.

Dedicated to Ira Levin, the prophetically titled “Lock Every Door” builds to a devastating finale that is more chilling and believable than Rosemary giving birth to the son of Satan. Sager uses the darkening atmosphere and the tiniest thing that goes bump in the night, for the utmost terror.

Review: Alison Gaylin probes how violence affects families The popularity of true crime podcasts bleeds into the tightly plotted “Never Look Back” by Alison Gaylin.

Her fictional hero Quentin Garrison uses his position as the interviewer for the LA-based podcast “Closure” to chronicle how violence affects families for decades in various ways.

Alison Gaylin’s 11th novel perceptively examines family dynamics, the domino effects of violence and our personal stories — real or invented — that help us maneuver through life. The strong tension that launches “Never Look Back” only intensifies with each surprising twist.

Violence destroyed Garrison’s family and he inherited the aftermath. His mother’s youngest sister was only 4 when she was killed in a shootout by teenagers Gabriel LeRoy and April Cooper, nicknamed the Inland Empire Killers who ended up murdering 12 people in Southern California in 1976. His grandfather, devastated by his little girl’s murder that led to his

wife’s suicide, neglected his surviving child. A drug addict all her life, Kate became the kind of parent she had — neglecting Quentin, destroying his self-confidence and crushing his sense

of identity. He’s afraid to ever show his true self to his husband, Dean, or his life-long best friend and co-producer, Summer.

Quentin uses “Closure” for his own sense of closure by first trying to interview his grandfather, whose bitterness still simmers. The two have a fight. Quentin finds another angle for his podcast when a source calls to say he believes a woman named Renee Bloom is really April, who was presumed killed in a fire along with Gabriel. The source says he recognized April’s voice and mannerisms when he saw Renee doing a televised discussion with her daughter, online film columnist Robin Diamond. Although skeptical, Quentin still flies to the New York area to find the truth, igniting another chain of violence.

The solid plot of “Never Look Back” also works well as a character study as Gaylin intelligently delves into each person’s psyche. Robin, wrapped up in her fraying marriage and online haters

who object to her column, begins to wonder just how well she knows her mother, who never talked about her past. The idea that this well-liked suburban matron who was a loving mother could be a killer living incognito seems preposterous to Robin, the fodder of B movies. And yet, the more Robin begins to consider this, the more she wonders about her mother.

Quentin is clinically depressed, obsessive and possibly violent, but Gaylin’s realistic shaping makes the reader also feel for him. Damaged by his family and its history, Quentin has still managed to inspire love and devotion from Dean and Summer, despite his protestation that he’s not a good person.

“Never Look Back” is another superior outing from Gaylin, who won the 2019 Edgar for her last novel, “If I Die Tonight.”

Give those in need ‘hope on a holiday’ Families challenged to prepare food for the homeless

ach year, Bahamians celebrate the anniversary of Independence by hosting huge parties, family get-togethers, and by showing their national pride with T-shirts and other attire.

With this in mind, the community outreach group Project Gideon is issuing the “Hope On A Holiday” challenge.

The goal is two-fold: to bring families together in a common cause, and help the less fortunate on this special day for the country.

“Traditionally, we eat a delicious bowl of souse and Johnny bread for breakfast on Independence Day, and a tasty Bahamian dish for lunch or dinner. We want to inspire families to consider the people who are not able to participate in the excitement of the day because of their current circumstances,” said Project Gideon founder Katherine Rolle.

Here is how you can participate in the challenge: On July 10, prepare three to five extra meals of your choice (breakfast or lunch) for people who are homeless or those you know are in need.

“We ask that you take a photo of your family with the plates of extra prepared dishes to distribute and tag us on Facebook at our ‘Purpose Made Me Do It’ page using the hashtag #Hopeonaholiday. Share the challenge with family and friends and see how many families we can get involved. For any queries, you can contact us at purposemademedoit@gmail.com,” said Ms Rolle.

She believes challenges like this have the potential to influence a whole generation, and participating in this

The challenge is founded on our challenge will not only bring families together, but will also teach children the importance of community service at an impressionable age.

Project Gideon, a branch of the Purpose Made Me Do It organisation, was inspired by the biblical tale of Gideon.

Ms Rolle said the initiative was designed to put an end to social ills that plague our communities by providing impoverished communities with groceries, clothing, toiletries and hot plates of food.

The goal is always to eradicate hunger, homelessness and hopelessness within the Bahamas.

“Project Gideon was first held on February 18, 2018 on Windsor Park in Nassau. We were able to feed and clothe hundreds of individuals and provided grocery bags to over 500 households. To accomplish this aspect of our community objectives, volunteers were also dispersed into the innercity communities armed with hot plates and groceries to bring aid and assistance to the hungry, homeless and hopeless,” said Ms Rolle.

Over the year and a half, Project Gideon has fed and clothed more than 1,500 people.

Additionally, free barbering services and blood pressure checks provided by certified health professionals were offered to members of the community.

“Due to the kingdom and biblical foundation this venture was built on, Project Gideon also evangelised to intercept the various spiritual ills that exist within communities and the lives of those who attended. Since then, Project

Gideon has hosted its second annual outreach initiative under the theme ‘Love Out Loud’. That event took place on May 19 on the grounds of Windsor Park. Project Gideon’s Mission 300 in 2018 and 2019 combined have fed 1,500 plus persons with hot plates and provided 1,000 plus grocery bags for the communities,” said Ms Rolle.

As to what inspired their Independence Day challenge,

love for this nation, and our belief in the power of united families.

“With so much dark things happening in this nation, we are looking forward to seeing Bahamian families unite on such a significant day to shine a light in the darkness of people’s lives. We are most excited to see and hear the feedback from families that participated,” she said.

Summer chores

I

f we try to do too much during the next three months we will be making life hard for ourselves. The midday sun is brutal, making even a trip from the kitchen to the garbage can an uncomfortable trek. Most of us have jobs to fill our days and we need to relax when weekends come along. We need to set up a summer routine that maintains the garden but does not entail arduous chores while the sun is high.

Our garden needs mowing, watering, weeding, maintenance and harvesting. A few years ago three people I knew personally died while mowing during the heat of the day in summer. Don’t do it. If you mow early in the morning you will upset your neighbours.

Don’t do it. We are a Christian nation so mowing on Sundays is frowned upon. Don’t do it.

So when do we actually cut the grass? I would suggest you leave mowing until the stars are aligned, it is relatively cool, and the spirit is upon you. Instead of a routine time, seize the moment. If your lawn becomes untidy in the meantime, try not to worry. It will look great when you finally get around to it.

Experienced gardeners maintain that watering in the morning is superior to watering in the evening. That may be fractionally so but if watering in the evening is more convenient for you, don’t sweat it. My summer watering schedule is twice every three days: morning, next day evening, skip a day, morning.

As long as the watering is substantial this regimen works well. A few heavy showers allow me to adjust the schedule for open ground watering but not for potted plants.

Even quite heavy downpours do little to water plants in pots. They should always be watered on schedule even if

If you water, you have to weed. You may not have any vegetables growing but your vegetable area is prime real estate and Nature will fill the gap with weeds. Wouldn’t it be nice to weed your veggie garden just once and find it absolutely weed-free in late October or early November in time to set out new season crops? It is easily done. Cover your veggie area with clear heavy duty plastic sheeting

after weeding and there will be no more weeding for months.

Your local hardware store has the clear plastic sheeting you require. It needs to be of a heavy gauge so once you have trimmed it and used it you can store it away for next year.

I find good quality sheeting can be re-used for about four years. Trim the sheeting with scissors and allow an extra 6 inches or so in all directions.

You can lay odd lengths of 2x4 lumber or rocks to pin the edges of the sheeting in place.

While you are at it you may decide to reduce the number of nematodes and other destructive denizens of the soil by watering the covered area very well once a week.

Watering allows the sun’s rays to heat the soil to a greater depth. Nematodes are killed at a temperature of about 130 F. When you went to school you learned that black surfaces heat up more than light surfaces. That is true, but we must use clear plastic on our gardens because it allows the sun’s rays to pass through and heat the dampened soil directly.

It is a fact of life that insects are more active in summer than in winter. They all have

a life cycle and ant treatment should be repeated in order to catch insects that were at the egg stage during the first treatment. Three treatments a month apart is a standard formula.

You may notice blackened leaves during your pastoral peregrinations. This is sooty mould caused by scale insects that establish themselves in one location on the branch of a shrub or tree and suck live-sustaining juices from the green layer beneath the bark.

Their excretion - honeydew – is splattered on the leaves below and black mildew forms on it, making your leaves unsightly. If the shrub is an ornamental you can treat it right away by applying a systemic insecticide to the roots.

You poison the plant and in turn the plant poisons the scale insects.

Do not use a systemic insecticide if the shrub or tree bears edible fruit. The recommended treatment for fruit trees is dormant oil that should be applied when conditions are cool and dry. That means we cannot use dormant oil at this time of year. You will fry your trees. Spray the infected area with soap

solution on a weekly basis.

Most scale insects have a waxy protective coating and when the soap breaks this down the insects are stressed and usually die. Use soap solution in summer and dormant oil on cool days during winter.

Do not panic if you get a mass attack of caterpillars that strip your shrubbery of leaves.

This is all part of nature.

Leave the caterpillars be and your greenery will grow back in short order.

Harvesting may well be the most rewarding of summer chores but it is still a chore.

It is best to leave Barbados cherry trees alone after a rain shower and wait until the leaves are dry before removing cherries. If any fruit – mango, say – resists picking to any extent then leave it in place. Windfall mangoes and guavas should be collected every morning and evening.

There’s no doubt about it: passion fruit is the easiest of all fruits to harvest. It falls to the ground, you pick it up within a few days, it is never bruised.

film “Midsommar “ is a waking nightmare and I mean that in the best possible way.

For over two hours you will be transported to a beautiful village in the middle of nowhere in a foreign land where the sun never seems to set and everyone is wearing ornate flower crowns and enchantingly embroidered frocks. The details of why you’re there will seem fuzzy and dubious. Someone’s thesis, maybe? But you go along with it even when things start getting weird.

You will eat strange food and drink strange drinks. You will take drugs you don’t want and be subjected to ceremonies and rituals and a language you don’t understand. You will witness some of the most disturbing things you’ve ever seen. You will not be too concerned when people start disappearing. You will lose the ability to rely on your one anchor to the real world. And even though you will barely comprehend what’s going on around you, you won’t be able to leave or look away.

Writer and director Ari Aster is to thank, or blame, for this extraordinary experience that’s equal parts befuddling and enthralling. It’s only Aster’s second feature film following the terrifying family drama “Hereditary” and it’s clear that the talent and deranged verve he teased there was no fluke.

But enter with caution: “Midsommar” is not as straightforward a horror as “Hereditary” was. It’s hazier and harder to grasp, despite taking place almost entirely in blunt daylight. This is an experiment in escalating uneasiness absent any release or catharsis.

As in “Hereditary,” a family tragedy sets an ominous tone, but this time it hits you right at the beginning before you’ve gotten to know anyone. We meet Dani (Florence Pugh) while she is frantically trying to contact her family to make sure her sister is OK, but no one is responding. It’s the worst possible outcome.

is a disturbing, enthralling trip Midsommar | 140 minutes

Unfortunately for her the only person she has for comfort is a boyfriend, Christian (Jack Reynor), who has already broken up with her in his mind but hasn’t gotten around to communicating that to her just yet. Too bad for Christian and his unsympathetic friends (Will Poulter, William Jackson Harper, Vilhelm Blomgren) Dani’s family crisis makes the otherwise imminent split all but impossible. So, Dani, a haunted shell of a human, becomes a permanent fixture at Christian’s side, even going so far as to accompany the four guys on their bro trip to the Swedish commune where one of them

was raised for a midsummer festival that happens every 90 years.

Aster literally turns the camera upside down as the five travel to this blindingly bright area. It helps you arrive a little queasy and disoriented (although not quite as much as the characters, who’ve just ingested some psychedelic mushrooms).

Still, the drug-induced visions are nothing compared to what they will experience as clear-minded tourists in this village, which at first seems like a quirky novelty. But as with so many chic cults, there is unfathomably grotesque violence and brutality lurking underneath the Instagramworthy aesthetics. Aster lures you in with relative normalcy, including often very funny dialogue and situational absurdity as the Americans try to fit in in this world. But before you know it, it’s too late to turn back and you’re stuck patiently watching this floral paradise curdle into a pagan inferno.

“Midsommar” is audacious filmmaking and totally transfixing despite its lengthy runtime. It’s heartening to know that big, original cinematic swings like this have not gone extinct.

And yet, as with Jordan Peele’s highly anticipated sophomore feature “Us,” ‘‘Midsommar” might not actually add up to anything especially satisfying, or completely coherent, in the end. Aster also curiously reuses some of the striking images he used so effectively in “Hereditary,” such as pagan iconography and starkly naked and desexualised bodies. And somehow these characters never evoke empathy on par with the “Hereditary” ensemble.

But the journey is fascinating enough that it’s still worth the trip. And by that point you’ll probably just be grateful that you’re finally allowed to wake up.

Review: 'Spider-Man'

swings again with a successful sequel spiderman: far from home | 127 minutes

P

eter Parker might be forgiven for craving a vacation as “Spider-Man: Far From Home” begins. After an emotional and strenuous last few movies with the Avengers, a break sounds nice. “I didn’t think I had to save the world this summer,” he complains.

But, you know the drill: With great power comes great responsibility. So it’s just a matter of time before Parker’s European school trip is interrupted by mayhem that requires a webslinger. We’re just glad the filmmakers didn’t also take a vacation as well.

In this ambitious and ultimately successful sequel to “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” Parker trades New York’s Coney Island and the Staten Island ferry for such iconic cities as Venice, Berlin, London and Prague. Seeing him swing from ancient bell towers instead of Manhattan skyscrapers is weirdly thrilling.

The first half of “SpiderMan: Far From Home “ could stand alone — Parker juggles trying to romance the toughbut-vulnerable MJ (the always welcome Zendaya) while also fighting giant monsters beside a ragtag group of superheroes.

Perhaps it’s a little underwhelming, but it’s solid. Just stick around: Things get positively bizarre in the second half as the film shifts up a few gears, turning into a kind of commentary on filmmaking illusion itself. It goes from sunny pop to acid jazz, from “Saved By the Bell” to “The Matrix.”

Speaking of school, viewers who haven’t yet seen “Avengers: Endgame” have some homework to do before watching Tom Holland pull on the red-and-blue suit this time.

“Far From Home” takes place immediately after the metaconclusion of all 22 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and assumes you know what happened. Plus, it might be a school night, but don’t even think about leaving the theatre before catching the two postfilm codas.

Director Jon Watts returns, adding to the great work he did in the first film, and screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who helped write “Homecoming,” make their own homecoming.

So does Jon Favreau playing Happy Hogan, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May and Jacob Batalon as Parker’s best pal, who this time ditches the nerdiness to show off a manof-the-world Ned. Borrowed from elsewhere in the Marvel Universe are Cobie Smulders as SHIELD agent Maria Hill and a snarling Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury. Spider-Man gets to play this time with a pair of high-tech eyeglasses that are an advanced tactical intelligence system, much like he interacted last time with his suit’s computer, Karen. (Alas, no cameo this time from Stan Lee, the Marvel icon who died in 2018).

Jake Gyllenhaal, who has proven to be an actor of tremendous range, is a newcomer to the superhero genre but proves a comfortable fit

despite being asked to wear one of Marvel’s oddest costumes. As Mysterio, he dons a huge cape, Roman Empire breastplate, giant gauntlets and a big glass bubble over his face like an upside-down goldfish bowl. But as Will Smith might say, Gyllenhaal makes this look good.

Foe or friend: Spider-Man (Tom Holland) meets Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) Credit to him and costume designer Anna B. Sheppard, who has concocted four Spider-Man suits, including a “stealth” one that gets him the nickname Night Monkey in Europe. And the trippy visual effects that stun in the second half connect not to the first film but to “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” — a huge

complement since that one was animated.

But let’s be honest: The thing keeping this together is Holland. He is utterly endearing as a goofy, insecure now-16-year-old hero with a cracked cellphone and who often makes things worse, apologising along the way.

The Legendary Bouvier Sisters: Love, Hate and Revenge Part II Sir Christopher Ondaatje continues to write about the glamorous lives of Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Princess Lee Radziwill.

The Bouvier sisters: Lee Radziwill and Jacqueline Kennedy

After London the two sisters left for a holiday in Greece as guests of the Greek Prime Minister. The two days stretched to eight as they cruised the islands, sunbathing and sightseeing and discovering the magic of ruined temples. They danced in night clubs till dawn and only cut their visit short when Kennedy ordered Jackie back to the White House because of his excruciating back pain.

Greece would play a great part in the future lives of the

two sisters. But before that, Jackie had travelled to India, Afghanistan, Austria, Canada, Columbia, the United Kingdom, Italy, Mexico, Morocco, Turkey and Venezuela.

In early 1963 Jackie was again pregnant, which forced her to curtail her duties. On August 7 she gave birth to a boy, Patrick Bouvier Kennedy, but he died of hyaline membrane disease two days later.

What the Kennedys did not realise was that Lee Radziwill’s marriage was unravelling, and when Lee

heard about her sister’s tragedy she was actually on an intimate cruise with Aristotle Onassis on his yacht Christina. She flew to the United States to be with Jackie and convinced Onassis to invite her sister to recuperate on his yacht in Greece. Kennedy was reluctant to allow Jackie to go, but relented because he knew she needed the recuperation. She was away on the trip for over a month, returning on October 17, 1963. She was aware of the romantic

involvement between Lee and Onassis.

On November 21, 1963 the First Lady and the President left the White House for a political trip to Texas – the first time she had made such an excursion. After breakfast on November 22 they took the short flight from Fort Worth to Dallas accompanied by Texas Governor John Connally and his wife Nellie. A nine-mile motorcade was to take them to the Trade Mart where the President was to speak at lunch. The First Lady was seated in the third row of an open presidential limousine next to her husband. As the motorcade turned into Elm Street a single short rang out, followed within eight seconds by two further gunshots, one of which struck the President in the head. He was rushed to Dallas’ Parkland hospital but was soon pronounced dead.

On board Air Force One Jackie stood next to Lyndon Johnson as he took the oath of office of President of the United States. She was still wearing the bloodstained pink Chanel suit she had worn in the motorcade.

Jacqueline Kennedy bravely took an active role in planning her husband’s state funeral, and in the following years she attended memorial dedications to her late husband and oversaw the establishment of the John F Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum next to the University of Massachusetts campus in Boston.

After Kennedy’s death, and with Jackie out of the White House, it was Lee’s turn to shine.

Although Aristotle Onassis had entered into a much publicised affair in 1959 with the married Italian soprano Maria Callas, it did not stop him from an intimate dalliance with Lee Radziwill. The affair continued well into 1963 when she introduced her sister, now the most famous widow in the world, to Onassis. Jackie was lonely, depressed, and tired of constantly being in demand and in the spotlight.

Onassis was attracted to her position and fame, and she was seduced by his wealth and attention. The rivalry with her younger sister did not bother her. They had fought over relationships with the homosexual Rudolph Nureyev, the Russian dancer who Lee had befriended in London but who had then moved his favours to Jackie in the more luminous White House.

What Lee did not recognise was Onassis’ determination to marry Jackie Kennedy. Lee and her husband, Polish Prince Stanisław Radziwill, were regular guests of Onassis on the Christina and on Skorpios island. Both sisters were captivated by the Greek shipping magnate.

“Onassis was a brilliant raconteur, in all of the five languages he spoke. He suffered from insomnia, and it was his practice to pass the long nights regaling anyone willing to listen – guests on his yacht or local fishermen in a Greek harbourside tavern – with his stories.

For Onassis Jackie was the ultimate trophy – world famous beyond Lee and even Maria Callas – made more beautiful by her tragic history.

On June 5, 1968 Bobby Kennedy was assassinated by Sirhan Sirhan – a young Palestinian – just after winning

Jackie Kennedy and Princess Lee Radziwill walk through the streets of London. the California Primary in his bid for the presidency. It was another shocking blow for Jackie who was very close to Bobby. She accompanied his casket from Los Angeles to New York – just as she had accompanied her husband’s body on Air Force One from Dallas to Washington. Something died in Jackie Kennedy then and many people believed that Bobby Kennedy’s murder propelled her into agreeing to marry Onassis. She is known to have discussed these plans with Kennedy.

Skorpios, Onassis’ four-hundred-acre island, appeared now to be a safe sanctuary away from Manhattan where she no longer felt safe.

Bobby Kennedy’s younger brother Ted attempted to negotiate a prenuptial agreement with Onassis. He demanded an up-front settlement for Jackie of $20 million, explaining that she would, by marrying him, lose $175,000 from the Kennedy Trust, as well as her presidential widow’s pension of $10,000 a year from the government. Onassis was furious over these outrageous demands, eventually agreeing with André Meyer, another Kennedy advisor, to $3 million for her and $1 million for each of her children. He also agreed to pay all of her expenses while the marriage lasted, and $150,000 a year after he died. In return, she agreed to waive her right under Greek law to inheriting 12.5 percent of his estate after his death.

At this point Onassis cooled to the idea of the marriage and begged Maria

Lee and Jackie on Onassis’ island, Skorpios Callas to come to Athens to get him out of the mess. Callas replied: “You got yourself into this. You get yourself out of it.” She then slammed down the telephone. Onassis realised that there was no way he could get out of the marriage.

Jackie did not tell her sister Lee about her impending marriage, who read about it in the newspapers. She was understandably devastated.

On Sunday, October 20, 1968, Jackie Kennedy and Aristotle Onassis were married in a Greek Orthodox wedding on Skorpios Island in Greece. Lee Radziwill arrived in time to be part of the wedding party and disguised her bruised feelings by publicly supporting

her sister’s marriage in the face of severe criticism from the American public and press who saw it as a national betrayal. They were shocked that Jackie had decided to marry the divorced Onassis, whose former wife Athina Livanos was still living. There was even speculation that she might be excommunicated by the Roman Catholic Church. She was condemned as a public sinner and became the target of the paparazzi that followed her everywhere.

During the first months of her marriage to Onassis Jackie seemed relaxed and happy, secluded on Skorpios, but still making frequent trips to Manhattan where her children were in school.

Onassis lavished gifts on her. He too seemed happy. She learned Greek and immersed herself in Greek culture. The Greek people loved her. Stas and Lee Radziwill and their children continued to visit Jackie on Skorpios. In the early 1970s Jackie invited the dashing young photographer Peter Beard to Greece to entertain Caroline and John Jr, her children. Beard was handsome, charming, an excellent photographer, and a respected author on East African wildlife, “The End of the Game” (1965). If Lee harboured bad feelings about her sister’s marriage to Onassis, the atmosphere warmed considerably in the Greek sun when Beard and Lee became lovers. He was five years younger than Lee and for the very first time she was attracted to someone who was not a magnet for financial security or social status. He was the love of her life, and their romance continued for a number of years. It was a secret affair because Lee was still married to Stas. She would sneak into Beard’s room leaving her husband and children asleep in nearby rooms. Stas and Beard became friends, and later he would travel on safari to Kenya with Beard.

In the early 1970s, however, Jackie’s marriage to Onassis began to show signs of strain. Onassis resented the time Jackie spent away from him in Manhattan. This was not why he

married her. He was also horrified at Jackie’s extravagant spending – not only on redecorating the house on Skorpios, but also on clothes. She reportedly spent $1.25 million on clothes during the first year of their marriage. She was a big spender, and lost heavily on bad stock market speculations. Worse still, Onassis sensed that his luck was turning against him. Four of his ships were damaged and he suffered big losses. One of his Olympic Airlines planes was hijacked

by Palestinians. He sought solace with his former mistress Maria Callas, and begged her to rekindle their relationship. He admitted that he had made a terrible mistake marrying Jackie Kennedy, but Callas refused to sleep with him.

In London Lee missed Peter Beard.

In February 1972 she went to Kenya with her husband but arrived a week early to spend time with her lover at his farm. After the safari Peter Beard stayed with the Radziwills in London, and later in Barbados at a friend’s villa.

Stas returned to London, but Lee flew to New York with her children determined to end her relationship with Stas. The 13-year marriage had ended.

In Manhattan Lee continued to see Beard, eventually renting a seaside lodge from Andy Warhol on Long Island’s southern shore. Beard moved in with her. Jackie and her children would spend long holidays with them.

Beard was responsible for a closer forgiving relationship between the two sisters. But it was difficult for Lee,

Jackie wed wed Aristotle Onassis on October 20, 1968. committed to a society life, to tame the restless independent spirit of Beard.

He left for Africa whenever he wanted, and she had to tolerate his open relationships with other women.

Rumours of bad luck and pending divorce plagued Jackie Kennedy’s marriage to Onassis. On January 22, 1973, when Onassis and Jackie were in New York, they got the news that Alexander, Onassis’ 24-year-old son, had crashed his Piaggio plane in a test run with two other pilots on board.

They flew back to Athens, but it was impossible to save Alexander who had suffered irreversible brain damage.

Onassis made the agonising decision to remove him from life support. Alexander’s body was buried on Skorpios.

Onassis was inconsolable. Everything he had done had been done for his son.

“My boy is gone”, he wept. “There’s nothing left for me.”

Lee’s affair with Peter Beard essentially ended her marriage to Stas. Their divorce was announced on March 3, 1973 and finalised the following year. His fortune had been severely diminished and he was reduced to selling Turville Grange, their country house, but Stas gave Lee a generous settlement.

“I was a foreigner married to another foreigner in a foreign country. That’s fairly difficult in a way. We both missed our own countries a lot. Divorce is a 50-50 thing, and it can be a number of petty things that finally drive you out of your mind.” – Lee Radziwill

The loss of Onassis’ son sounded the death knell of his marriage. He began to take out his grief on Jackie.

“Mr Onassis really lost his mind when his son died in that airplane crash ... He was no longer interested in life.

He became a perfect horror to live with.” – Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis

Jackie’s attempts to help Onassis’ grief and rescue the marriage failed. His health deteriorates when he developed myasthenia gravis – a painful condition that caused one of his eyelids to droop. He began divorce proceedings, but before they could be instigated he was rushed to the American Hospital of Paris in Neuillysur-Seine. On March 15, 1975 he died in Paris. He was 69 years old.

Sweet Richard T he first time I met Sweet Richard was when I handled Out Island shipments for Esso. He walked into the office I shared with Sloane “Bunty” Farrington, introduced himself as Richard Dean and placed an order for one drum of kerosene to be shipped to Long Island by mailboat.

The kerosene would be consigned to Richard’s father, who lived in a settlement known as Taits, Long Island.

I had never heard of Taits and asked how to spell it. I can still hear him as he says “T A I T S,” then adding, or “T A T I S; it doesn’t matter.” But it mattered to me, because I wanted to learn about our Out Islands. After work I opened the family’s copy of my father’s 1926 atlas, “Maps of the Bahama Islands”, and started at the northern end of the island (the top).

Starting at Cape Santa Maria, I found Hog Cay and worked my way down the map, finding about six dozen settlements – with names like Burnt Ground, Alligator Bay, Whale Head, Indian Hole Point, Jerry Wells Landing, Stevens, North Side and Stevens, South Side, Great Harbour/Clarence Town (known as the Capital of Long Island), Hard Bargain – before I got to Taits on the Atlantic coast. A small settlement, Taits was about 10 miles south of Clarence Town and about 12 miles from the South Point.

Richard moved to Nassau as a teenager and appears to have started work as a butcher, even running his own Over-The-Hill butcher’s shop. While on the subject of shop signs, it was common to see shops with signs that included the words “Licenced to Sell Butcher’s Meat”. It was also common to see what I think of as “within” signs – such as “Tailoring Done Within”, “Dressmaking Done Within”, or “Hairdressing Done Within”.

When Richard Dean became “Sweet Richard” is unclear, but it was clear to everyone that he was an entertainer; performing 24 hours a day.

Richard dressed like a pirate, not just for his shows, but all day and, presumably, every day. I ran into him countless times on the sidewalks of Bay Street. He greeted people with the words “Cool it, Daddy”, and became

Forgotten facts | Paul C Aranha “The Cool One” performed in numerous clubs and hotels, including The Cat and Fiddle and The Silver Slipper, where the audience had to spend money to see him. But on the streets of Nassau the public saw him for free. They saw him, too, in Junkanoo parades, and they loved him.

The time came when Richard was ready for a bigger audience and went to Miami to get work. For a while, nobody seemed interested in his talent, but that changed forever the day he did the limbo across Flagler Street, causing several blocks of traffic back-ups.

The next morning, the Miami Herald’s headline, in very big letters, was “THE COOL ONE’S IN THE COOLER”. Sweet Richard had been arrested, but that performance landed him a job on Miami Beach, at the famous Fontaine Blue Hotel.

Richard Dean’s career ended the night he choked on a piece of steak and died.

Richard’s forte was dancing the limbo. He went lower than the other limbo dancers and did it with flair and finesse to the sounds of “Limbo, Limbo like me! Limbo, Limbo like me!”

I think of him at The Junkanoo Club, a harbourside nightclub on Bay Street, where his show included a knife fight – which, of course, Richard always won. As the show ended, he threw his defeated opponent into the sea. Except for one night, when the vanquished threw the victor into Nassau Harbour.

More curly tail tales!

ome time ago I wrote an article about the curly-tailed lizards who have taken up residence in my garage and who are frequently found sunbathing in the hot Summer sun.

For technical reasons the last 300 words of that article got chopped off, and I received several messages asking why I had ended the article so abruptly. It was quite simply a technical error. I was given the choice of republishing the same article the following week, or elaborating and writing another article with the last 300 words incorporated in the new article…I have chosen to do just that.

Just the other day I came home and it was pouring with rain. There he stood, slap in the middle of the driveway, head high, looking at me with a defiance worthy of Tiananmen Square in 1989. Funny thing was that whilst he stared my Volvo down, his tail was totally straight. It made him look more like one of those beautiful blue “king” lizards I never see anymore. I sat patiently in my car. Moving forward an inch or so, until finally he decided that he had

tamed the metal beast, and up went his tail into its perfect curl, and off he scurried in triumph. I could almost imagine him boasting to his junior curly tails who are all smaller than he is about how he won against the “dragon”.

I am constantly delighted to see this old friend from my childhood memories turn up in my garage so frequently and I am pleased to, once again, put down food for him. I am assuming that he is the one eating the dry dog food that I leave scattered. I do have a varied bunch of birds that call my house home, so I suppose a pigeon or two might be responsible.

Normally the curly-tailed lizard eats a combination of fruit, flowers and insect; and apparently dog food. I wonder if the bottlebrush tree may have attracted him. When I see him he is never far from that tree, even in the rain the other day.

We have a very prolific bottlebrush tree next to the garage that also attracts humming birds and the odd butterfly. Could it be that the sweet flower of the bottlebrush that the hummingbirds crave so much is also a delicacy for the curly tail?

After I published my first article about the curly tails I was amazed how many

comments I received from people who also have very fond memories of them from their childhood. Macgregor Robertson wrote to me and said that he had enjoyed my curly tail article in The Tribune. He further said: “It reminded me of a story way back in my youth! I grew up on Shirley Street and we didn’t have curly’s in those days, that is until Peter Bethell and Ozzie Moseley imported a number from Sandy Cay and turned them loose at the Bethell’s property on Bay Street (near the then Pan Am Building). Since then they have spread around Nassau.

I am glad that writing about some of the most simple creatures and moments can bring back pleasant childhood memories for my readers.

As I mentioned in my first curly tail article, we didn’t have them on the island I lived on, Bird Cay, but they were prolific on little Kitten Cay, which was just a few hundred yards away, separated by a narrow channel. I guess they cannot swim like the iguanas can.

The curly-tailed lizard is not easy to research casually on the internet. Many pages have conflicting information, so much so that it is hard to decide who is providing the accurate information and who is not. When I tried to find out what their conservation status is, all I was able to determine is that they are listed as “data deficient”. I hope they continue to flourish in the Bahamas.

It always makes me happy to have cause to stop and enjoy a few minutes watching a bird or a lizard, or any other wild creature that shares my habitat. Mr Curly Tail is a welcome resident, and perhaps as Summer grows older a few little curly tails might appear.

They will doubtless be as fearless and “dinosaurian” as their papa!

My dogs do not seam interested in him, they do not even look up when he passes by. I think they realise that their “human Mom” is a nut and loves all things animal so they just sit back and share the love, after all, there is plenty to go around in this house.

The human/animal link is alive and well. So, our fearless little dinosaur look-a-like Mr Curly can live unbothered and free on this property.
