Process uncertain as commission chairman’s appointment expires By RICARDO WELLS Tribune Staff Reporter rwells@tribunemedia.net DESPITE his critical role in an ongoing process to have delinquent parliamentarians and senators file their outstanding disclosures or face prosecution, Public Disclosure Commission Chairman Myles Laroda said yesterday that his appointment has expired, leaving aspects of the process “up in the air”. Today was supposed to mark the turnover of Mr Laroda’s finalised list of delinquent officials to Attorney General Carl Bethel, however, with this surprising announcement, there is no clarification on how the

‘CHRISTIE TRYING TO DISTRACT’ FROM POOR RECORD OF PLP By RICARDO WELLS Tribune Staff Reporter rwells@tribunemedia.net
DEPUTY Prime Minister K Peter Turnquest has dismissed former Prime Minister Perry Christie’s recent defence of the former government, saying the former Centreville MP was attempting to distract the country from his party’s “many unfortunate acts of lack of judgment”. The East Grand Bahama MP added that despite Mr
Christie’s calls for a “dispassionate examination of the record,” the Bahamian people will act as the final judge on the inadequacies and failures of the former government. Last Thursday, during a lengthy interview at his Cable Beach home, Mr Christie defended his administration from accusations of irresponsible spending, misfeasance and cronyism. SEE PAGE SIX
POLICE are investigating a murder that occurred on Friday night where a man on bail was shot and killed in front of a Superwash on Nassau Street. Photo: Terrel W. Carey/Tribune Staff By SANCHESKA DORSETT Tribune Staff Reporter sdorsett@tribunemedia.net A 33-YEAR-OLD man on bail for murder, who was being electronically monitored, was shot multiple times and killed late Friday night. The killing took place shortly after 10pm off Nassau Street and brought the country’s murder count to
70 for the year, according to The Tribune’s records. Assistant Commissioner of Police Clayton Fernander said police received information that shots were heard near Meadow Street. “On arrival, they found the lifeless body of a male that appeared to be in his mid-20s with apparent gunshot wounds to the body,” ACP Fernander said.
“He was lying in the road just behind me and Emergency Services personnel came and confirmed he was dead. We do not have a motive for the murder at this time and no suspects in custody, but this is a busy intersection and we are appealing to members of the public who have heard or seen anything to come forward. What we do know thus far about the victim is
that he is being monitored and is presently on bail for a serious matter.” Police have not identified the victim, but The Tribune understands he is Valentino Ferguson. Last Thursday, National Security Minister Marvin Dames said the government is not “totally satisfied” with the crime situation. SEE PAGE FIVE

SEVERAL managers attached to a department at Bahamas Power and Light have been placed on leave while a forensic audit is being carried out on the utility provider’s finances, Works Minister Desmond Bannister confirmed yesterday. In an interview with The
Tribune, Mr Bannister stressed the action was not an “indictment” on the employees, but said the auditors needed “full access” to all BPL files without interference by the staff. Mr Bannister would not say how many persons were sent home, but The Tribune understands the three senior officers were suspended Friday afternoon. SEE PAGE SIX
