CALIFORNIA HATE CRIME UP 31% IN 2020, LED BY ANTI-BLACK BIAS SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Hate crime in California surged 31% in 2020, fueled mainly by a big jump in crimes

targeting Black people during a year that saw the worst racial strife in decades, according to an annual report released yesterday by the state’s attorney general. Overall hate crimes increased from 1,015 to 1,330 last year, while the number of victims increased 23%, from 1,247 to 1,536. Black people

account for 6.5% of the state’s population of nearly 40 million people but were victims in 30% of all hate crimes — 456 overall, up 87% from the previous year. “What we see from these reports is what we have seen and felt all year — we are in the midst of a racial justice reckoning in this country.

It’s multi-faceted, and it cannot be solved overnight.” Attorney General Rob Bonta said. California saw some of the largest protests following the murder of George

reports were the most since 2008, when there were 1,397. That in turn was topped several times in prior years, including 2001, when there were 2,261 hate crimes reported.

BISHOP WALTER HANCHELL “Bishop has personally sacrificed many things along with his family to make sure that those who were hungry had a hot plate of food and those without clothes or shoes had something to wear. Now it’s Bishop Hanchell who needs our help. I would like to encourage the general public, business owners, pastors, churches, organisations and anyone who has been touched by the ministry and giving of Bishop Hanchell and Great Commission Ministries to make a generous donation towards his medical expenses. The Lord used him to help so many, now it’s time we allow the Lord to use us to be a blessing to Bishop Hanchell,” he said. A number of well-known gospel artists have been confirmed for the event, including Christopher Roberts & Friends, Landlord, Edison Sumner & Voices of Praise, Shaniqua Thurston, Bishop Denczil Rolle & Friends, DJ Counsellor, Eboni Gospel, Kenyatta Taylor, Najie Dunn, The Bahamas Liturgical Dance Co, DJ Godson, Sunae Russell, Christian Massive, the Singing Bishop & Prophet Lawrence Rolle, and Shaback. I truly believe that without the work and presence of Great Commission Ministries in the community hundreds would go to bed hungry every night and many would have no clothes to wear and no place to sleep. There are many families who are thanking God today that Bishop Walter Hanchell and his wife, Elder Minalee Hanchell, obeyed the leading of the Lord

ISHOP Walter Hanchell, a man known throughout the Bahamas for his unselfish and relentless work with the poor, the elderly, the unemployed and helping the under-privileged, is now in need of the assistance himself in the form of prayers and the charity of others. Bishop Hanchell, who founded Great Commission Ministries International in 1987 - a ministry that has provided hot meals daily for decades to the less fortunate - was diagnosed with stomach cancer some months ago. Hoping to come to Bishop Hanchell’s rescue, a group including churches, gospel artists, promoters, producers, organisations as well as family members will come together this Sunday, July 4, at the Myles E Munroe Diplomat Centre beginning at 5pm to host “Victorious”, an appreciation, tribute and benefit service. The event will serve as an opportunity to honour and pay tribute to Bishop Hanchell, as well as raise funds to assist with his medical expenses. After learning of his diagnosis, Bishop Hanchell immediately started chemotherapy in the United States. The process left him weak and unable to eat for a period of time and he had to also regain the strength to walk again. Then things took an even more difficult turn two weeks ago when Bishop Hanchell’s doctors informed him that in addition to his stomach, they have also found cancerous tumours on his kidneys. The decision was then made for Bishop Hanchell to undergo surgery on today, in North Carolina, in an effort to remove the tumours in his stomach and on his kidneys. Kevin Harris, who is producing the benefit event, said he sprang into action when he learned of Bishop Hanchell’s ordeal. “When I heard the news, like so many others, I was very concerned and covered him and his family in prayer. It was not long after that announcement that I was contacted by a close friend and sister, Sharmie Farrington Austin, asking me what could we do to assist Bishop Hanchell with his medical expenses. I had produced benefit concerts over the years for a number of friends who were also battling cancer, so when Sharmie called, it just made sense that I put on my producers hat once again to assist Bishop Hanchell, a man whom I have known for over 25 years and who along with his wife has been a blessing in my life and that of my family. It was an immediate ‘yes’. I picked up the phone and started making calls and we formed what is now our working committee,” he told Tribune Religion. Mr Harris said Bishop Hanchell, and by extention his family, has been “a major blessing to countless individuals, families, churches and organisations for well over 30 years.”
