Heating up the music scene with Pyromania II

BUILDING on the success of last year’s event, Soundwaves in collaboration with Bahamian artist Zaafira has brought back Pyromania II concert, to showcase local talent.

The second instalment of the annual concert series will take place tomorrow at Nirvana Beach Bar, West Bay Street.

Pyromania was started last year by Zaafira in conjunction with Tim Daniels, founder of the Soundwaves Group. Zaafira started Pyromania in 2021 as a way to not only showcase her talents, but to create another stage in which other Bahamian artist can perform and build a following.

“Pyromania 2021 was inspired by my insatiable desire to perform. The stage has always been my home, and it seems I cannot get enough. I wanted to put on a full “Zaafira” concert, in which I could go all out with singing, dancing… and basically just feeling like Beyonce for one night,” she said.

Zaafira is a singer, songwriter that has worked behind the scenes in the industry since 2013. She has deep roots in the Bahamian music industry, coming from a line of musicians starting with her distant cousin being world-renowned Bahamian musician Joseph Spence.

She has co-written songs made famous by artists like Julien Believe & Dyson Knight. After making the decision to go mainstream, she has since graced many stages local and international.

Last year’s event, Pyromania 2021, proved to be a huge success, even though at the time the country was slowly opening up from lockdowns.

“The demand from followers requesting another Pyromania event came rolling in the months following the first show. These requests sparked the fire to create an annual event that only gets bigger and better with time,” she said.

Zaafira said the aim was to make this one even better.

“We have amazing opening acts Chase Fernander and It’s Dia, fire dancers, and of course a full set by yours truly. I have literally put my life into this show, as the performance line up is basically my way of telling my life story through the art.

“People can expect to see a Bahamian artist perform like they never have before. At the end of the night, I want to be certain I leave everything and more up on the stage. My art is my life, and I want to share that with the world, scary though it may be.

“People say that most Bahamians do not support the arts, well I beg to differ. I have seen firsthand how the underground music and art scene has grown tremendously. We are making our mark, and we are here to stay. Pyromania is for the true lovers of art, for the square pegs in round holes.

Taking into account international standards, we aimed to present something that is exciting and down-home in nature, but also one that meets industry standards when it comes to entertaining. “If you are looking to break away from the norm of Bahamian entertainment, then this event is for you. You don’t have to fly to Madison Square Gardens to see a world-class performance, we’ve brought it right to your backyard, on the beach. If you are someone that actually takes pride in supporting Bahamian like I do, then I assure you this is the place to be. Let me tell you I am as nervous as ever, but it is my pleasure to be called a Bahamian artist, and I promise one day I’m going to make this country proud, starting with Pyromania 2022.”

Three Bahamians to receive Icon Awards THREE Bahamians will receive Icon Awards this Saturday during the 2022 International Culture Day. In the area of culture, Angelique McKay will be honored for her tireless work in promoting Bahamian culture, especially Junkanoo. In sports, international athlete and javelin specialist Keyshawn Strachan will be honored. The Rev CB Moss will be honored for his long-standing service in community activism.

The event is expected to draw people from all walks of life in a celebration of culture including live performances, traditional music, circus acts, children’s activities, a variety of food including vegan options, a fashion show, natural hair show, and a special awards ceremony for the International Culture Day Icon Award recipients.

Angelique McKay was recently crowned Queen Mother Asafokyereba of Pokesu and the Ahanta people of western Ghana. She is a proud “Shehawk” for Genesis Junkanoo Group, and she is the founder and CEO of the Junkanoo Commandos. A descendant of Cat Island, Angelique successfully published “Come do the Junkanoo”, a children’s activity book designed to enhance cognitive skills. She also conducts residency programs

on the creative art of junkanoo locally and internationally. Angelique holds a Master’s Degree in Cultural Project Development from the University of Turin, Italy.

Eighteen year-old Keyshawn Strachan is the national record holder in the javelin for under 17 and under 20 with a personal best of 79.89 meters.

He is also the Carifta record holder in both of these categories. Originally from Lowe Sound, North Andros, he is the last of five siblings. His parents are Dukisha Moss and Calsey Strachan.

Keyshawn has just completed his studies at St. John’s College and has his sights set on Auburn University and is on a mission to become a pilot.

Powered by the scripture Philippians 4:13, Keyshawn says that “manners and respect will take you around the world”.

The Rev CB Moss is an icon in the Bain & Grants Town communities and he has done much to serve his people through the Bain & Grants Town Advancement Association, including providing food, clothing and educational material to those in need. He and his wife, Franciska Moss, have led Mt Olive Baptist Church for decades.

Moss has successfully held National Heroes Day celebrations in the inner city for many years, using the opportunity to hail unsung heroes. It is therefore fitting that this time around, he will be the one receiving the honor.

The Holy Qubtic Church of the Black Messiah, Meadow Street and www.journeyhomegroup. com will present International Culture Day on Saturday, from 10am to 6pm at the Heritage Site, Arawak Cay, West Bay Street. Admission is $5, while children 12 and under and seniors with ID is $2. The Rev Dr AJ Varmah, head pastor and scribe of the Holy Qubtic Church International describes the day as a way of bringing people of the diaspora to a place where they can see “black excellence on display”.

Live performances include Bodine Victoria, Landlord, the Jazz Cats, Emanji Circus and Paul and Tanya Hanna. Colours Junkanoo Group will also bring the event to life with a rush-out.

In addition to a natural hair and fashion show, there will be a vegan cooking demonstration by Sia Wright, winner of the National Young Chef Competition, and by Chef Amunet of Qubtic Kitchen.

Chris Johnson Inspired since childhood, Chris Johnson has been an eager bird watcher all his life - and now captures them on camera. He spoke to Cara Hunt about his passion for his hobby that is now taking him beyond The Bahamas.

C

hris Johnson has spent a lifetime bird watching in The Bahamas - and his passion is now taking him farther afield in search of new wildlife.

“I got started when I was about seven and saw a Bahamian parrot which really sparked my interest,” he told Tribune Weekend.

“As a child, I used to love being outdoors and hiking and that progressed into a love of bird watching.

Chris’s interest was further fostered by the Bird Club of New Providence.

calls or hoping to get a glimpse of a feather that would lead to him being able to add another species to his list.

“It’s sort of like collecting, some people collect stamps or coins, I am hoping to find all the bird species and see how many I can see in a specific time frame.

He also likes challenging himself to reach goals.

For instance, he says he had a pretty big year last year when he was able to identify 242 different species of birds in The Bahamas.

“I was not expecting to see that many actually and so it was very exciting.”

One of his biggest highlights was when he became the first Bahamian on record to spot a Canadian Warbler - a fact that was well documented in bird watcher media.

Chris spotted the bird on August 28, 2018, in Abaco making it the 38th species of the bird to be spotted in The Bahamas.

“I think that was the bird I was the most excited to see,” he said.

He said he would love to see the birds of paradise which are found in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and eastern Australia which have been featured by Sir David Attenborough on his nature show.

Chris explained that there really is not a science to bird watching and every bird watcher has their own little tricks they use to increase their chance of success.

For example, he says that he likes to stalk water or food sources where birds are likely to gather.

He also just hikes around listening out for bird calls which is one of the identifiers to determine a species.

Other ways include visual identification which takes into account size and shape, colour pattern behaviour and habitat.

A large part of bird watching is of course verifying what you have seen.

Of course, a picture tells a thousand words which is why snapping a picture of a rare bird is the best way to officially be verified with the official bird watching organisations.

You can also have a bird verified by recording its call.

Photography has now become another passion for Chris.

“I love shooting birds and landscapes as well as other animals,” he said. While the bird watching

community in The Bahamas is small, its members are very passionate about their hobby, “I’d say that there are about 250 local bird watchers here, but there is a huge market for eco-tourism and bird watching tours here,” he said.

Chris said that at first, family and friends were surprised by the depth of his passion.

“At first some of them didn’t get it,” he says. “But over time, I have been able to peak their interest.”

Chris also became involved with the organisation BirdsCaribbean.

BirdsCaribbean is a vibrant international network of members and partners committed to conserving Caribbean birds and their habitats in the insular Caribbean (including Bermuda, The Bahamas and all islands within the Caribbean basin).

The organisation’s mission is to raise awareness, promote sound science, and empower local partners to build a region where people appreciate, conserve and benefit from thriving bird populations and ecosystems.

It is a non-profit membership organisation. With 32 years of

experience, BirdsCaribbean has built an extensive and active network of more than 60 partners across the region that includes government agencies, institutions, businesses, and non-profits.

“They invited me to do this internship in Wyoming and it was something that I really could not turn down, especially since it puts me so close to Yellowstone National Park,” he says.

During his time in Wyoming, he is learning quite a bit about bird banding.

Unlike bird watching, which is just spectating, bird banding involves catching the birds an placing a band on them and releasing them back into nature so that researches can learn more about their migratory and

feeding habits etc.

Chris started his internship on May 28 and will finish on August 7.

He said it has been a fascinating experience and he has learnt quite a bit.

For starters, the landscape of The Bahamas and Wyoming are so very different.

He has also had to learn about the state’s indigenous birds and other wildlife, which brings a new level of excitement and challenge to his bird watching.

More, more, more for summer

UMMER time family fun and an intimate shopping experience rolled into one are promised at the second annual “More Things” Pop Up. The event - a collaboration between local businesses on the island of Eleuthera - invites families to support unique small businesses on the island.

Presented for the first time in December, “More Things” is an outdoor intimate pop-up market that features local small businesses with locally owned goods, apparel, accessories, home decor, holiday pastries, games, and food and more.

Talk of The Tee Boutique in conjunction with Tri Tu’s Governor’s Harbour and Pivotal Flow Advisors have come together to hold the event for a second time on the island, on July 1-2 at Cupid’s Cay, Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera.

With shops and activities few and far in between on the island, the organisers are enthusiastic.

A representative of Talk of the Tee said: “The fact that it actually happened and is set to happen for a second annual time, is surreal. Pop Up Shops have become more and more popular these past years, and we are happy to be a part of such an inspiring movement. I have this conversation with my peers a lot of times, which is noticing the fact that in the midst of such a hard time in life such as the pandemic and lockdowns - so many new ideas were birthed. There are so many creative businesses literally ‘popping up’, and I love to see it. Whether it’s the lady offering fancy hot dogs under a tent daily or a lemonade stand at the side of the road - I have grown such a big appreciation for these kinds of sightings.”

After the successful event in December, organisers decide to make More Things a bi-annual venture. They were encouraged by the feedback from those living on the islands.

The Talk of the Tee representative said: “There were patrons that gave such good feedback in December, it was only right we pop up again during a Summer month, and what better time than July. The kids are done with school, people are looking for family outings and fabulous shopping finds: we have all that and more.

“Our first event focused on Christmas holiday items, and this one is geared more towards the season that we are currently in. That would be the idea going forward. What is great about hosting an event for a second time, is having a blueprint or guideline of the first one. Learn from things that could’ve been different and add more to what could be. We studied the first event, and are doing our best to make this one even better.”

No matter how much traction the event gets in the future, the goal is to always keep it in an intimate space.

“Cupid’s Cay is the home of Tri Tu’s, Talk of The Tee Boutique and Pivotal Flow Advisors businesses that decided to come together to make this event happen. It’s our home so it means so

much more; it’s more than an event space - it is a platform we are bringing to our doorsteps and something new for locals to learn about and enjoy.

It’s also intimate and the goal is to keep it that way. Growing up on the island, from my memory, our version of pop-up shops were stall booths at homecoming sites where we would support our locals that sold either food, games, straw works and things like that.

“To just randomly host an event where various business were invited to sell their creative products in one open space was rare and wasn’t really popular. We are so happy to provide this platform as it continues to grow. We added a “ fun spot” corner this year for both kids and adults to enjoy some games. The whole experience will be a bit more interactive this time around.”

Some of the vendors are returning while the summer pop-up event has attracted some newcomers as well.

The spokesperson said: “Last year, we even had two vendors that flew in from Nassau to participate, and that was amazing to see it make a reach like that.”

The caterpillars are coming! Again?!

Good day gardeners. While I was scouting through a future crop of citrus fruit trees this week on an afternoon, I came across a swallowtail larva (Papilio species, possibly P. andraemon). Hold on, there is another one there, and then, another yet! I was thrilled for a moment.

Then the terror struck. They’re going to ravage my citrus trees tonight!

Heavens! Is it going to devour years of effort in a day, or a week maybe?! Do I smash it? I’ll smash it, that’s what I’ll do. No, too messy.

Should I spray it?! I’ll spray the entire crop! Hang on, maybe a little dust will do it. Dust is too unselective most of the time for my liking. Fear not!

Upon a quick further inspection these larvae turn out to be not that harmful and they are one that I am familiar with. Phew. They can even be beneficial to the citrus tree that they are on, by tipping off new growth while lunching to encourage increased branching in a few weeks’ time, if they haven’t become bird food by that time (birds need food too).

A bushier citrus shrub or tree in six weeks’ time, thank you swallowtail, they have saved me from having to tip off the new growth myself and are helping to create a better tree.

With increased branching being triggered when tips are removed, there will also be an increase in flowers, and in turn, fruit when it is that time again. I like it when I get help from creatures in the garden.

It makes my job, and my after-work time in the garden, that much easier.

Swallowtail larvae (and I have to be honest here….) look like a large lizard poop, to me.

Some say they look like bird droppings, and I can see that too. Why do I know what lizard poop looks like, one may ask.

Lizards, as well as butterfly larvae, are both part of the entire circle that I live in, and lizards are good pest predators. I have no problem with lizards being around, they eat mosquitoes off my ankle, and I don’t flinch all the time. Balance.

I have no problem with a few swallowtail larvae being around either, mostly because that if and when they take flight, they are majestic, gorgeous looking butterflies that cause

no lasting damage to anything, and they bring joy to those seeing them.

Back to the larva that started all of this. It was happily munching on a relatively new leaf of a key lime tree.

A Warrior’s tale

I

HAD not heard of THE POLITICAL MAGAZINE, until I googled ‘Whitby Warrior’, a 16-gun brig that played a vital role in the successful attack, led by Col Andrew Deveaux, that recaptured The Bahamas.

In their July 1783 issue, there was a very interesting report on that invasion.

Cmdr Daniel Wheler’s letter, from FORGOTTEN St Augustine, dated April 15, 1783 “GENTLEMEN, I have taken the earliest opportunity to let you know of my proceedings, since my departure from St Augustine. I sailed in company with the Perseverance private ship of war, together with Colonel Deveaux, whose fleet we had taken under our protection…. The success of Colonel Deveaux was extraordinary in his recruiting department; a number of the inhabitants, joining him, formed a body of infantry stronger than the former force, consisting then of but 50 men, but at his return amounting to 300, with 35 large boats. On the 9th inst., at night, we got under way from Egg Island and, at three in the morning, landed Mr. Deveaux with his men, on the east end of [New] Providence. who immediately made an attack on Fort Montagu…at the same time the [Whitby] Warrior’s boats [Under Command of Maj Archibald Taylor] attacked three gallies and took them, without loss.

[Wheeler’s emphasis.] At eight in the morning of the 10th, he summoned the [Spanish] Governor to surrender the garrison, who sent him word that peace had been proclaimed in the Cape, and that he expected official instructions from the Havannah to deliver up these islands to his Majesty, but that hostilities did not cease in these latitudes till the 20th instant.

Too much cannot be said in favour of Colonel Deveaux, whose intrepidity and good conduct during the whole time, would do honour to a veteran commander.

The acquisition is not inconsiderable; four square-rigged and two sloop gallies, seventy pieces of cannon, an extraordinary quantity of ammunition, stores and provisions, with an amazing quantity of very fine cotton, have fallen into our

hands.

Provisions for the troops, sailors, and sick in the hospital, are to be furnished at his Britannick (sic) Majesty’s expence (sic), as also vessels prepared to carry them to the Havannah, and a vessel to carry the governor to Europe.

Art. 3rd All the officers and troops of the garrison, belonging to his Catholick (sic) Majesty, are to remain in possession of their baggage and other effects.

Art. 4th All the vessels in the harbour belonging to his Catholick (sic) Majesty are to be given up, with every thing (sic) onboard the said vessels, to his Britannick (sic) Majesty.

Art. 5th. All effects appertaining to Spaniards, to remain their property, and the Spanish merchants to have two months to settle their accounts.

their arms precisely at four o’clock, between the fort the pickets, after which his Excellency will march out 300 paces without the pickets, and halt the troops, until the British troops take possession of the garrison, after which, an officer will be sent to conduct them to the Eastern Fort, where the officers and troops will observe the conditions specified in the 2nd article. Literary lives – Sir Paul McCartney

Life and music beyond The Beatles – Part II Sir Christopher Ondaatje continues to write about the English singer, songwriter and musician who was the co-lead vocalist for The Beatles – one of the most successful song composers of all time.

“I don’t work at being ordinary.”

– Paul McCartney When The Beatles were breaking up in 19691970, Paul McCartney fell into a deep depression.

His wife Linda helped him out of that deep, dark hole and in 1970 he released a solo album – McCartney. It was his first solo release where he provided compositions, instrumentation and vocals. It was a one-man album and it shot to number one on the US charts. It didn’t take him long to regain his confidence.

He produced a second album Ram, and then together with Linda, drummer Denny Seiwell, and Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine, formed the band Wings.

“I don’t really want to keep going as a solo artist... I had to get a band together ... and it was like ‘Yeah, but let’s not put together a supergroup, let’s go back to square one’.”

With the addition of guitarist Henry McCullough, Wings’ first concert tour began in 1972 with an audience of 700 at the University of Nottingham. Ten more concerts followed as the band travelled across the UK in a van, staying at humble accommodations and playing at unannounced universities and being paid by students. It was marketing genius.

During the seven-week, 25 show Wings Over Europe Tour the band only played Wings and solo McCartney material. “Long Tall Sally” was the only song previously recorded by The Beatles. McCartney brilliantly avoided large crowds and played small halls that held fewer than 3,000 people.

In March 1973, Wings got their first number-one single, “My Love” on their second LP Red Rose Speedway – a US number one and UK top five.

They were flying. McCartney next collaborated with his wife and former Beatles producer George Martin to create the song “Live and Let Die” – the theme song for the James Bond movie of the same name. It was nominated for an Academy Award and reached number two in the US. Martin earned

a Grammy for his orchestral arrangement. It was symphonic rock at its best. Later that year, after McCullough and Seiwell left Wings, the McCartneys and guitarist Denny Laine recorded Band on the Run, which became the first of seven platinum LP records for Wings, and also a US and UK number one. One of the best-selling albums of the decade, it remained in the UK charts for 124 weeks. McCartney and Wings won the Grammy Award for the song “Band on the Run”. In 1974,

McCartney hired guitarist Jimmy McCulloch and drummer Geoff Britton to replace McCullough and Seiwell. Britton subsequently left Wings in 1975 and was replaced by Joe English.

“Mull of Kintyre”, co-written by guitarist Denny Laine and McCartney in November 1977, quickly became the most successful single of McCartney’s solo career, and went on to sell two and half million copies and become the UK sales record

(until the 1984 charity single “Do They know It’s Christmas”).

“London Town” (1978) spawned a US numberone single “With a Little Luck” and continued Wings string of commercial successes, making the top five in both the US and UK. Wings completed their final concert tour in 1979 with 20 shows in the UK that included the live debut of the Beatles songs “Got to Get You into My Life”, “The Fool on the Hill” and “Let it Be”.

In 1980, McCartney released his second LP, the self-produced McCartney II, which peaked at number one in the UK and number three in the US. He composed and performed alone. The album contained the song “Coming Up”, the live version of which became the group’s last numberone hit. It had been an incredible ten years, enormously profitable, and by 1981 McCartney felt that he had achieved everything he could with Wings. The group disbanded in April 1981 when Denny Laine left after arguments over royalties and salaries.

McCartney collaborated with Stevie Wonder in 1982 to produce the number one hit “Ebony and Ivory” which was included on his Tug of War LP; and then with Michael Jackson on “The Girl is Mine” from Thriller. “Ebony and Ivory” was McCartney’s 28th single to hit number one on the Billboard 100. He worked again the following year with Jackson on “Say Say Say”. Another hit.

In 1984, he starred in the musical Give My Regards to Broad Street which he wrote and produced, and included Ringo Starr. It didn’t work.

Roger Ebert the film critic gave it one star and wrote: “You can safely skip the movie and proceed directly to the soundtrack.”

The album reached number one in the UK and “No More Lonely Nights”, which featured David Gilmour on lead guitar, reached the top-ten single in the US. In 1985, Warner Brothers commissioned McCartney to write a song for the comedy film Spies Like Us. He composed and recorded the track in four days. He then performed “Let it Be” in the Live Aid concert – but technical difficulties rendered the piano and vocals barely audible. However, he received an enthusiastic crowd reception with David Bowie, Alison Moyet, Pete Townshend, and Bob Geldof.

In 1986, McCartney collaborated with Eric Stewart on Press to Play with Stewart writing most of the songs on the LP. He released CH06a 6 CCCP in 1998, initially available only in the Soviet Union, which contained 18 covers, recorded over two days. The next year he joined fellow Merseysiders Gerry Marsden and Holly Johnson to record “Ferry Cross the Mersey” for the Hillsborough football disaster appeal fund. McCartney then formed another band which included himself, Linda, Hamish Stuart and Robbie McIntosh on guitars, Paul Wickens on keyboards, and Chris Whitten on drums. In September 1989, they

The album Tripping the Live Fantastic contained performances from the tour.

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society commissioned McCartney to celebrate its sesquicentennial with Kiri Te Kanawa, Sally Burgess, Jerry Hadley and Willard White. Reviews were negative in the UK, but more generous in the US, The New York Times saying: “There are moments of beauty and pleasure in this dramatic miscellany ... the music’s innocent sincerity makes it difficult to be put off by its ambitions.”

The Liverpool Oratorio reached number one on

the UK classical chart.

Before taking a four-year break from his solo career to work on Apple’s Beatles Anthology, McCartney performed a selection of acoustic only songs on MTV Unplugged; and released Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest with Youth of Killing Joke. This was before his 1993 New World Tour.

Linda McCartney died of cancer in April 1998.

He did an unannounced performance at her benefit tribute “Concert for Linda”, his wife of 29 years. It was held at the Royal Albert Hall and organised by her two friends, Chrissie Hynde and Carla Lane.

McCartney’s last words to Linda were: “You’re up on your beautiful Appaloosa stallion. It’s a fine spring day. We’re riding through the woods. The

••• Paul McCartney continued to work after Linda died in 1998. It had been a good marriage. He released an electronic album Liverpool Sound Collage in 2000 using the sound collage and music techniques that had fascinated him in the mid-1960s, and contributed the song “Nova” to a tribute album of classical chord music called A Garland for Linda (2000) dedicated to his wife.

Following the September 11, 2001 attack in New York, McCartney took a leading role in organising the concert for New York City. His album in November Driving Rain included the song “Freedom”. The next year he went on tour with a new band that included Rusty Anderson, Brian Ray, Paul Wickens and Abe Laboriel Jr. The Driving World Tour in April 2002 included the US, Mexico and Japan. The tour earned $126.2m. Billboard named it the top tour of the year. The band continues to play together – longer than he played with either The Beatles, or Wings. He remains one of the world’s top draws.

McCartney is known for his strength, versatility and wide tenor vocal range scanning over four octaves. Rolling Stone ranks him as the 11th greatest popular singer. Chris Cornell, Billy Joel, Steven Tyler and Brad Delp have all named McCartney as a significant vocal influence on them. “Hope of Deliverance” and “Put It There” are examples of McCartney’s folk musical efforts, while “When I’m Sixty-Four” and “Honey Pie” are his attempts at vaudeville. He continued experimenting with vocal styles throughout his post-Beatles career.

He played piano on several Beatles songs including “Hey Jude” and “Let It Be” which seemed influenced by Fats Domino and had a gospel rhythm. He played a Moog synthesiser on “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”; and drums on his albums McCartney, McCartney II, and McCartney III. McCartney’s first serious girlfriend was Dorothy “Dot” Rhone whom he met in 1959 at the Casbah Club in Liverpool. The couple had a two-and-a-halfyear relationship. Rhone’s miscarriage in 1962 ended the engagement. He then met British actress Jane Asher in April 1963. They lived at her parents’ home in Marylebone for two years before moving to McCartney’s own home in 1966. He wrote “Yesterday”, “I Love Her” and “I’m Looking Through You”. They had a five-year relationship and planned to marry, but Asher broke off the relationship when she discovered he had become involved with Francie Schwartz, an American screenwriter who moved to London hoping to sell a script to The Beatles, but it didn’t work out.

Paul McCartney turned 80 last Saturday. He is best known for using a plectrum or pick on his bass guitar – strongly influenced by Motown artists Brian Wilson and Stanley Clarke. He plays left-handed. During his early years with The Beatles, he used a Höffner 500/1 bass, but from 1965 he used a Rickenbacker 4001S for recording.

He primarily flatpicks playing acoustic guitar, though sometimes he used elements of fingerpicking. Examples of his acoustic guitar include “Yesterday”, “Michelle”, and “Blackbird” – his personal favourite. John Lennon was murdered in New York on December 9, 1980. Though McCartney had a strained relationship with Lennon in his last years with The Beatles, they had become close again in 1974.

urtles, turtles, turtles. I barely know where to start, the battle clearly continues.

How does one make people understand the importance of conservation and eco-tourism?

We are presently blessed with a Prime Minister who certainly gets it when it comes to climate control, and conservation. The P.M. and his First Lady, Ann Marie, are staunch supporters of reforestation and awareness, reef conservation, and the importance of nurturing the gifts of nature that we have in our country. How is it that all their efforts and hard work do not trickle down to the people living here, the very people who stand to benefit most from their efforts, and efforts of many others?

A day or two ago there was a simply horrible report about a large and very beautiful turtle tied with a rope around its neck. This apparently occurred a week or more ago.

Tourists who were familiar with Grand Bahama were taking a boat ride when they spotted a turtle bobbing around in the water, behind a place of business, upon further investigation they saw it was tied by a rope around the neck. They went to get help from Keith Cooper, owner of West End Ecology Tours, but when they returned the turtle was gone. It is probably too much to hope that the turtle somehow managed to bite the rope and escape.

The perpetrators probably saw the dingy and removed the turtle and slaughtered it immediately.

Why is this so wrong? The are laws forbidding the harvesting, possession, purchase and sale of turtles, their parts and their eggs.

In an article published by 242newsbahamas Mr Cooper is quoted saying that we, The Bahamas, need to step up our game as a marine conservation destination. Eco-tourism is alive and well around the world, people love to

escape the concrete jungles that they live in and travel to pristine beaches clean water teaming with amazing marine life.

The Bahamas has all the laws, be it for the conservation of endangered marine species or cruelty to animals, it is in place and passed, we only lack one essential component: enforcement and follow through. When will we pay attention to the laws in the books?

Just last week, Andrew Allen unleashed an attack on the turtle conservation laws. He took aim at Hubert Ingraham saying that he was influenced by foreign-oriented cultures.

He claims that the “foreign oriented” group were trying to enforce their own culinary norms…what nonsense when

The world evolves and people today have had the intelligence to understand what is important. The protection of turtles has actually given many people jobs in ecotourism that did not exist. Little Farmers Cay has a thriving business with turtle dives. All the dive operations comment on how excited people are when the see a turtle swim by.

The Bahamas is starting to be recognised as a country with a conservation conscience and I am fiercely proud of Hubert Ingraham for having the foresight to pass the initial turtle protection law, and am equally delighted to see Philip Davies so active in the environment and the conservation side of the country.

There is no doubt that people come here because of the natural beauty of the country. Frequently we are rude to them and not terribly welcoming, we make anti-foreigner noises but the tourists keeps flocking. It is not our “sunshine welcome” that brings them here. It is what we are custodians of: the sun, the beaches and our natural habitats and their inhabitants. If you doubt the hidden beauty of this country, just take a trip to Bonefish Pond right here in New Providence and is you are very luck you just might see a turtle…. Unless someone has eaten him!

Ready to sizzle for summer

BAHAMIANS are invited to indulge in a day of fun, delicious food and adult beverages.

The team at digital payment provider Kanoo is to host a Summer Festival that will include Kanoo cash giveaways, Nassau’s hottest DJs, and some of the best Bahamian entertainment around.

The event will take place at the Fusion Superplex on Saturday, July 2, from 11am-8 pm, with live performances by the Curbside Rockers, Judah Da Lion, Junkanoo rush outs, and more.

Kanoo marketing manager Glenique Knowles said: “The Kanoo Summer Festival is a completely cashless day party that allows our merchants to sell their products to our users via the Kanoo app. It’s all about giving our users, merchants, and the public a chance to get to know Kanoo in a fun, interactive and informative environment. We are all about connecting and empowering.”

Ms Knowles said: “We are so excited to host the Kanoo Summer Festival. On that day, we’ll have tons of great entertainment, food, and beverage vendors ready to serve patrons. And of course, there will be lots of games, giveaways, and surprises. This event promises to be a memorable one.”

“The theme is all about the summer vibes.

Due to the pandemic, we haven’t really had the chance to go out and have a good time.

So, the Kanoo Summer Festival will be one where the entire family can come out and enjoy food, drinks, and entertainment.”

She added: “We are looking forward to connecting with everyone, from new and existing merchants and users. We consider them family and we want to empower them as much as we can. We’re also looking to grow our family by introducing potential merchants and users to the platform. The Kanoo Summer Festival will be an annual event. In addition to that, the Kanoo team will be a driving force in creating and promoting cashless events.”

Organisers noted that COVID-19 protocols will be enforced to ensure that everyone can safely enjoy the event.

Telling story of refugees in art

By CARA HUNT cbrennen@tribunemedia.net A TALENTED group of young Bahamian artists recently partnered with the UNHCRF to highlight the global plight of refugees.

World Refugee Day was observed on June 20, under the theme Whoever, Wherever, Whenever, Everyone has a right to safety.

Attorney Crispin Hall who works in the local UNHCRF office as the associate protection officer explained his office held two events.

On Monday evening, his office hosted a reception at Fusion Superplex where guests watched the video 100 Million displaced and the documentary Simple as Water, a 2021 American documentary film

by Oscar-winning director Megan Mylan.

The film documents Syrian families across five countries, revealing the impact of war, separation, and displacement. The film is a meditation on the elemental bonds of family told through portraits of four Syrian families in the aftermath of war.

There were also remarks

by Rhoda Jackson, director general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Liv Feijen, head of the Caribbean Protection Unit, UNHCR Multi-Country Office for the US and the Caribbean “World Refugee Day is about celebrating the resilience of refugees in The Bahamas and around the world,” Mr Hall said.

He noted that the themes of the film are relevant everywhere.

“We look forward to continuing our work with the government and our partners to promote a welcoming and inclusive environment for people who seek protection in The Bahamas.

Additionally, art students from the Doris Johnson school joined other artists around the world in an exhibit called Drift to highlight the stories of people forced to flee their homes.

The basic premise that these works by themselves are a metaphor for the individuals who find themselves displaced by circumstances beyond their control.

“The point is to take Bahamians outside of their artistic comfort zone and to try embrace something that does not necessarily resonate with most of the citizens. The idea being to establish an understanding that by being open to new concepts, counter intuitiveness and art foreign to them there is an opportunity to grow. This is parallel as to how we should be open to refugees and people we are unfamiliar with” Mr Hall explained.

“They then can pass on the work to friends and family who in turn can continue to pass on the information of the refugee crisis. The idea being that the work can find a permanent home or it can continue to move. This exchange between artists and owner metaphorically serves to remind us of the physical movement of these travelers from home to foreign lands.”
