RELIGIOUS NEWS, STORIES AND CHURCH EVENTS

The true meaning of fatherhood highlighted in special church service BY JEFFARAH GIBSON | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER | JGIBSON@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET

F

ATHERS were honoured and highlighted for their commitment to family last Sunday in special church services all across the Bahamas. Numerous churches made the effort to organise celebratory events in recognition of Father’s Day. Among those was the Ebenezer Union Baptist Church in Exuma, whose members pulled all the stops to not only celebrate fathers, but also remind them of their purpose and the profound role they play in the life of their children and those they mentor. This year’s Father’s Day service at Ebenezer in Farmer’s Hill was touted as a unique and personable experience. The stage was decorated in a “masculine style”; the mood set with the help of strategically placed fishing rods, golf equipment and construction tools, said Vanessa Smith, the public relations officer of the church. Rev Stephen Smith, who leads the congregation at Ebenezer, engaged the men of the church in a talk as they spoke of their life’s experiences and challenges. “The fathers participated and told their stories – a widowed father with young children, a stepfather, a bereaved father who lost his father, a father growing up without a father, an absent father, a godly father,” she said. Ms Smith said the conversation was a touching one, and gave those in attendance an insight into what it takes to be a good father in the midst of uniquely challenging circumstances. “The conversation was so real that it captivated the audience and no one even wanted to move out of their seats. Some segments were emotional, displaying that even men can hurt and shed tears,” she said. An especially touching story was that of Leroy Franklyn, a native of Trinidad who made a presentation about being a

stepfather. He talked about his love for his stepchildren and how he does not discriminate in his treatment of them. He spoke about how they take family vacations together as one, including his biological children. Rev Smith then chimed in to encourage men to continue to be good fathers by loving, caring for, spending time with, giving to and praying for their children. The participants were Darron Morris, Leroy Franklyn, Nacarno Rolle, Wayne McKenzie, Urban Smith and Cecil Smith. Mr Smith said he considered the ultimate example of a father’s love to be God sending his only son to die for the sins of the world. He encouraged other men in the congregation to always love and give to their children the way God gives. Presentations were also made by the Women’s Department President Karen Winters and her assistant Jenny Rolle. They presented the men with gift baskets, apple cides and baked treats.

THE TRIBUNE LIFE can get so busy, and before you know it, you are giving your all to others and not so much to yourself. From working the daily 9-5, to taking care of the home and family, you can often find yourself just going through the motions and not really living life. In an interview with Tribune Religion, Christian readers spoke about the various Bible scriptures that speak to the ways in which God wants His people to not only live, but to also enjoy life. One example, Jeremiah 29:11, says: “ ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’.” Christians agree that life’s struggles can become overwhelming, especially when things don’t go as planned, but it’s important to always remember that God is in control of everything, and with Him at the centre of your life, you will be OK to live your best life. Mary Johnson quoted John 10:10, which reads: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” The Bible, she said, is very clear in

MEDITATION RESTORED IN GOD’S IMAGE BY REV ANGELA C BOSFIELD PALACIOUS

RESTORATION to holiness and wholeness is God’s desire for you. God wants you to have consistent thoughts, speech and actions that bring integration to your character. God’s desire for us is wholeness and holiness. Our Lord Jesus Christ came to provide us with a way to both. What do these words really mean? According to Webster’s Dictionary, the definition of whole is “sound, healthy, not divided, complete, entire” and the definition of holy is “belonging to or associated with divine power, sacred, living according to a strict or highly moral religious or spiritual system, saintly, or set apart for a religious purpose.” The way to become holy is:

RELIGION

LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE BY ALESHA CADET | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER | ACADET@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET YOU don’t have to be rich to live an abundant life either; wealth is more than just money.

To follow Jesus as your Lord having accepted him as your saviour. To read, study and emulate the instructions given in Holy Scripture. To allow God to heal you. To allow the Holy Spirit to take control of your life. To forgive and be forgiven. To pray and enjoy the permanent presence of God. 1. God offers us forgiveness but we have to accept it: If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. (1 John 1:8-10 NIV) 2. We have to forgive ourselves: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:16-17 NIV) 3. We have to forgive others: For if you forgive … when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive …their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. (Mt. 6:14-15 NIV) Allowing prayer to change your heart, mind and spirit is the best way to be restored to wholeness through holiness: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength” (Mt. 22:37). All the other loves of life will make sense and fall into their rightful

showing how Jesus came in an effort for people to live an abundant life. “You don’t have to be rich to live an abundant life either; wealth is more than just money. You can choose to be rich in spirit, rich in personality, simply rich in who you are as a person. Bad things do happen to good people, but that’s not important, because in the end you are rewarded for the good you put into this world that can be so evil. Don’t spend your days worrying about the thief that comes to steal, kill and destroy, but focus on knowing that joy comes in the morning,” said Ms Johnson. Speaking on a popular Bible verse, Philippians 4:13, that reads: “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me,” Tamara Simmons said if there ever comes a time where you are overwhelmed, remember that it was God that place when we realize that we cannot make it without the Lord. Most of us look to the wrong person for wrong things until we learn to trust God, love God, we will always be victims, dominated or oppressed. It is Christ who sets us free. Christ gives us our dignity. Prayer exercises: 1. Write a letter to God thanking God for your blessings. 2. Write a letter to God confessing your sins and desire to change. 3. Write a letter to persons you need to forgive and then destroy them as you pray. 4. Write a letter asking for forgiveness from those whom you have wronged and prayerfully destroy them (unless God tells you to deliver them). 5. Develop a prayerful plan of action determining the steps you need to make to begin to live a changed life.

Thursday, June 24, 2021 ● PAGE 47 said you can do anything. “With His strength you can do what you need to do in your life, more than you ever thought you could. Whether you are feeling hurt, tired, stressed always remember where you can seek the help you need in pushing through. You are never alone and that thought alone should keep you going. Continue to stay strong, and prayerful. Shake off the troubles and live your best life now. I once read this quote that said God doesn’t live inside a man-made box and He didn’t create us to live there either, and that has stuck with me,” said Ms Simmons. For Brenda Lewis, it’s the Matthew 5:12: “Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven.” She said life on earth will never be anything close to perfect, but with rejoicing, surely gladness will flow and follow. “Be encouraged and take spiritual resets, as the Lord always has new mercies and favour for you. Always remember whose child you are, a child of the Most High God. Like the Matthew 5:11 scripture says, ‘God blesses you when people mock you’,” said Ms Lewis. Open yourself to continued restoration, by the grace of God. • Rev Angela Palacious, a motivational speaker and author of several devotional books, is an Anglican priest. Giving birth to purpose U

NDER the theme “The Midwife is in the House”, the 2021 edition of the “It’s Time to Give Birth” empowerment conference will seek to help people from all walks of life to find their God-given purpose and give “birth” to it. The conference, hosted by Patrice T Smith Ministries International, takes place from June 30 to July 4, beginning each evening at 6pm. A luncheon will also be held on Saturday, July 3, at 11am. The event will be held at Kingdom Explosions International on Jerome Avenue and streamed live on Patrice Smith’s Facebook page. This conference was first held in 2017, but Prophetess Patrice Smith said the

vision for it was given to her by God two years prior to that. “Knowing what we are called to do is critical for effective living. Therefore, this empowerment conference, could not have come at a better time,” she said. Over the five days of the conference, speakers will deliver messages that aim to help believers find their vision, dreams and purpose. The opening speaker is Prophetess Carol Coleby. She will be speaking on Wednesday, June 30. “If you have ever been in one of her services, you know that change will take place in that room,” said Ms Smith. The speaker on Thursday will be Pastor Kellin Russell. Next up on Friday is Apostle Terry Moxey.

“This woman of God is set to tear the powers of darkness down on this night,” said Ms Smith. On Saturday, the host of the conference herself, Ms Smith, will be taking charge. The conference will come to a close on Sunday with Prophetess Patrice Rolle taking the microphone. “This awesome woman of God is slated to tear the place up with her powerful sermon,” said Ms Smith. “On Saturday, beginning at 11am, this is when the luncheon will be held, and believe me when I tell you that this is going to be an all-out party fest, where there will be food fun, music and even a DJ. You read that right, there will be a DJ in the house to provide awesome music for persons to enjoy.”

According to Ms Smith, “the fun and the food will be well worth you being in attendance.” The vision for the conference this year is to sow the seeds of good information, tips and ideas in the minds and lives of the young women in attendance. “We intend to have some of the young girls from the Girls Industrial School, the Willie Mae Pratt Centre for Girls and several other organisations in attendance on the Saturday luncheon,” she said. Ms Smith, who is also the founder of the Esther’s Ball which annually honours successful Christian women, hopes to make an impact on the lives of women and young girls through this conference. Tickets for the Saturday luncheon are $50, and donations can be made by calling the church at 242-823-6498.

‘SUPER-HERO’ IN SPIDER-MAN OUTFIT MEETS POPE AT VATICAN VATICAN CITY Associated Press

WHILE Pope Francis is usually the star at Vatican gatherings, Spider-Man, or at least an Italian who dresses up like the character, was the attention-grabber among the public lined up in rows during the pontiff’s weekly Wednesday audience. Matteo Villardita, 28, dons the comicbook and movie super-hero outfit to cheer up hospitalised children, like those at the Vatican’s paediatric hospital which he planned to visit later yesterday. Sweating under his costume in Rome’s heat wave, Villardita said he asked Pope Francis to pray for the children and their families. The man told AP TV that he gave

Francis a spare mask, “as a sign, to tell him that through these eyes I daily see pain from sick children in hospitals.” Villardita, with a costumed arm, reached out and touched Francis, who wore no mask against COVID-19, on the back on an arm as he greeted the pontiff. Said Villardita: “It was very exciting because Pope Francis immediately understood my mission.” Villardita took selfies with youngsters attending the audience in a Vatican courtyard. The Vatican described Villardita as “really a good super-hero” and quoted him as saying that during Italy’s long months of pandemic lockdown he made more than 1,400 videocalls, since he wasn’t able to visit in person, to help ailing children smile.
