Brittany Archer She found her dream job travelling the world and helping people with special needs. And even when a devastating medical diagnosis threatened to bring it all to an abrupt end, this Abaco blogger decided to soldier on. She tells Cara Hunt about dealing with a chronic illness while abroad and her dream of opening a very specific type of travel agency in the future.

ONG before the travelled the world, blogging about her experiences and giving tips on how to travel when suffering with a chronic illness, Brittany Archer enjoyed the life of an island girl.

When her mother asked her what she wanted to do with her life after graduating from high school, Brittany didn’t have an immediate answer.

Born and raised in Marsh Harbour, Abaco, she knew she could remain in the safe and familiar environment of her small island community or she could spread her wings and expand her horizons. She chose the latter – a decision that allowed her to see the world and confront a major medical challenge hundreds of miles away from home.

“I decided that I would go to university rather than stay and work in Abaco. So I attended Florida Southern University which is in Lakeland. Initially, I majored in International Business before adding interpersonal communications for a double major,” she said.

Her senior year, she found herself at a crossroads.

“I was about to graduate, I didn’t have a job lined up and my parents were asking me when to book my ticket home. But I was not ready.”

Instead she took the advice of a classmate and travelled across the country to California to volunteer with an organisation called the Camphill Movement.

Camphill communities are residential communities and schools that provide support for

the education, employment and daily lives of adults and children with developmental disabilities, mental health problems, or other special needs.

There are over 100 Camphill communities in more than 20 countries across Europe, North America, Southern Africa and Asia.

It was the adventure she had been waiting for.

Since joining the organisation, she has volunteered in communities in Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Germany, Norway and Denmark. She is currently working in Scotland.

“I would have to say that the best part of the experience has been meeting the residents.

They are amazing people and they have such remarkable attitudes. Another great thing about this is that you meet so many volunteers from all over the world. And so now if there is a place I want to visit, I only have to reach out to a friend and I have a place to stay,” she said.

One of the main challenges about being a volunteer, Brittany said, is that you are required to work long days.

“Volunteers are not required to have any experience, but if they know you have certain skills, they will try to place you in that area.”

Her favourite country she visited was probably Ireland, she said.

“The people are so incredibly friendly and welcoming and it is a beautiful country.”

Four years after she graduated and started volunteering, Brittany’s life suddenly changed forever in 2016. She experienced some vision loss and felt unwell. After several doctors visits, she received a devastating diagnosis.

“I was diagnosed with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS),” she said.

Multiple sclerosis is a condition which affects the brain and spinal cord, causing a wide range of potential symptoms including problems with vision, arm or leg movement, sensation and balance. There is no cure. People like Brittany who have RRMS have periods where they are in remission for a time, but may experience relapses.

“I was heartbroken and devastated,” she said of the diagnosis. “I was sure that it was the end of my travel career. I said, well, I had four years of this and I guess that will have to be enough.”

However, she was determined to carry on for as long as her health would allow.

“After one of the darkest and most confusing periods in my life I made another big decision.

Travelling is my new life. I have to keep moving while I can and it’s just going to require loads more planning and preparation.”

Fast forward to today, and Brittany has been taking a disease-modifying drug (DMD) for more than three years and is still travelling the globe. “It’s been nearly seven years since I lived at home. I am still physically able to travel and I have picked up a few tricks along the way to make this work.”

Brittany was eager keep a journal of her thoughts and lessons she learned about travelling with a chronic illness. In 2017, she decided that she would publish these entries in a blog she called “The Travelling MS” – a play on the words “miss” and the abbreviation for multiple sclerosis.

“It was important that I include my experience with MS because there are times when I like to pretend that I don’t have it,” she said.

The blog also includes tips on travelling and working abroad such as eating like the locals, how to find cheap flights, et cetera.

Brittany is currently enjoying her time stationed in Glasgow, Scotland.

Right before travelling to Scotland, as fate would have it, she was actually at home when Hurricane Dorian devastated Abaco. Fortunately,

she and father chose to ride out the storm in Dundas Town, which is situated on higher ground than Marsh Harbour, where their family home is located.

“The water came up to the two-storey buildings in Marsh Harbour,” she said. “I remember so clearly I had received my visa to study in the UK on Friday and the storm was on Sunday and we didn’t know the extent it would be because you know, we are Bahamians, we are in hurricanes all the time. I was the only one of my siblings on the islands so I said I would stay with Daddy so he wouldn’t have to ride out the storm alone and then I would book my flight the coming week. But I had no idea, no one had any idea that it would hit us the way that it did.”

After living through that ordeal, Brittany was able to finally travel to Glasgow, only for the COVID-19 pandemic to hit and bring life to a standstill all around the world.

“Just like in the Bahamas things are just now starting to open and start up again. But it has been a ghost town the last few months.”

Brittany’s doctors feel she is not significantly more at risk for contracting the coronavirus since her MS is in remission at the moment.

However, they advised her to still take every reasonable precaution to stay safe just as other patients who are in the vulnerable category should.

Brittany said in the future she would love to start a travel company where she arranges tours for people from Scotland to the Bahamas and vice versa.

raditionally, Bahamian coconuts have been popular for their water and to use in making coconut milk. But a local company is making use of the fruit (which can also be referred to as nut or seed) to come up with a new line of products; everything from oils and fragrances, to chips and flour, as well as dairy-free alternatives for people suffering with digestive health issues.

It is truly all about the coconut for the team of the aptly named Coconut Factory.

“Persons are amazed that so many products can be made from the coconut,” said Youlette Etienne, the company’s processing, sales and marketing representative. “They trust our products over imported similar products simply because they know that no one is spraying coconut trees on the beaches and in the bushes on the Family Islands.”

To teach the younger generation about the versatility of the coconut, the company frequently hosts school groups at the factory.

Youlette said she is always nervous, thinking there is no way young people will be interested in coconuts. However, in the end she is always pleasantly surprised by how wrong she is.

“They are first amazed by the number of coconut products, other than coconut tarts or coconut water. They become quite captivated with how I started with just kitchen appliances. Their interest grows even more when I show them our coconut machines, which I purchased with the Island Luck OWN Your Bahamas Small Business Grant in 2015. When it is time for them to participate in the actual processing of coconuts there is always a long line. I never have enough coconuts or enough time. The tours are scheduled for two hours. We

The Coconut Factory, she said, is the only company that makes a variety of coconut products in the Bahamas. These products range from skincare to food items, including vegan cheeses, ice cream, as well as coconut cream liqueur.

“We use organic wild-grown coconuts from throughout the Bahamas. From the shell we produce activated charcoal. From the husks (bark) we produce coir soil, which is used in hydroponic and aquaponic farms. These are our core products, which contain only one ingredient, coconut. We do not use imported coconuts. The environment is very important to us at The Coconut Factory.

Therefore, we process the entire mature coconut, leaving nothing to waste,” she said.

“I decided to research coconuts and discovered how versatile coconuts are. I learned that the world coconut industry is a very viable and sustainable business, and coconut products are in high demand worldwide. Our goal is to become a recognised and trusted brand in the Bahamas and worldwide.”

The company has now expanded to using coconuts to make things like vegan Parmesan cheese, sliceable cheeses, and dips, which have become very popular. They also produce a skin and hair care line, as well as coconut oil hand sanitisers.

“Prior to the country-wide shutdown, 120 students visited our store to learn about coconuts. We also held Air BnB Experiences tours where tourists booked individual or group sessions to learn everything about the coconut. We also offer soapmaking and business classes for those who also

want to become entrepreneurs. Since the shutdown, we have had a sharp increase in our online sales, particularly with our coconut milk. People are looking for dairy-free food alternatives. Recently, several of our coconut products were approved

by Super Value. We are in the process of adding personnel to the company in order to meet this increased demand,” said Youlette.

Youlette feels that coconuts are a good item to incorporated into diets to fight the Bahamas’ high rate of diabetes, hypertension and obesity. She said coconuts are helpful to those suffering from such health issues.

“Coconuts also have a naturally sweet taste, which makes it easy to include in diets. All of our coconut food products are dairy, soy and gluten free. With the exception of our ice cream, our coconut food products are keto friendly. They are high in fibre and protein, and low in carbs. Coconuts are not only filling, but help to increase the metabolism, which aids in weight loss. We have customers who are cancer patients and some who suffer from celiac disease. Some have skin issues, including eczema and psoriasis, and have found relief with using our coconut oil, soaps, and lotions. What goes on your skin is just as important as what goes in your body. As such, we ensure that our products are made with organic and all natural ingredients,” said Youlette.

She said once the business, located in the Malcolm Building on East Bay Street and Victoria Avenue, is fully operational in July, they will continue with renovations of the retail store to include a coconut milk smoothie bar where both locals and tourists alike can hang out.

in time Blair J Meadows in the spotlight

HE pressure for business owners, entrepreneurs and creatives to consistently be producing work during the lockdown was very real for many. But Bahamian multi-disciplinary artist and photographer Blair J Meadows said he did not fall victim to it.

Unlike many other artists, Blair’s focus was not on churning out new work or constantly posting about their businesses on social media for people to consume while they were stuck at home. Instead, she used her unexpected downtime her to plan her future ventures.

“I have seen a lot of creatives fall victim to the pressure to constantly be ‘on’ during this time. I understand that now is a great time for maximum online exposure, but I am just not wired that way. Instead of scrambling to constantly create content for myself, I took some time to pause and strategise the next move. Burnout is a real thing,” she said.

But that doesn’t mean Blair hasn’t kept busy. Although she was not able to shoot and interact with clients, she was able to do some product photography for a few companies she normally works with on their digital content.

“I updated my website and worked on a few design projects. It was refreshing to return to some of the things that I loved doing,” she told Tribune Weekend.

Blair also recently launched a visual art company, Framework Studio, which will focus on producing visual content for commercial purposes. It will also serve as a platform to welcome and inspire collaborations with other visual

artists across a wide range of media.

While Blair is a multidisciplinarian artist, she is best known for the unique aesthetic of her photographic work. She takes pride in shooting every image and presents them in a way she hopes is visually captivating.

Blair initially took an interest in graphic design at the age 14, after being introduced to the Photoshop software by a friend.

She then the joys of the Adobe Creative Suite graphic design software.

“By then I was the go-to person to design collages in high school,” she said.

“I always enjoyed looking at old family photographs, not really thinking about making them, but just delving through archives in admiration. I remember being around my uncle (who was also a professional photographer) as a child and seeing his work. After having some experience with a point-and-shoot camera as a teenager, I eventually got my first DSLR and started to document my younger brother. We have a 16-year age difference, so I was able to capture his life from infancy to his preteen years. I was in awe of his innocence and sense of wonder. It helped me to understand life a little more from another perspective,” she told Tribune Weekend.

for friends and classmates and was in the process of monetising her skills.

“I worked with my uncle at his studio for a bit before studying photography abroad at the Savannah College of Art and Design, which is where I earned my BFA in Photography,” she said.

Blair’s work has matured since those early days. The evolution, she said, is evident in her new work and she sometimes cringes at her early photos.

“My work has progressed to be more soulful, vibrant and clean. I appreciate a lot of texture in

my work. In portraiture, I am big on the richness and accuracy of skin tones,” she said.

“There is power in the ability to capture a moment in time that may never present itself in the same way again. I enjoy that aspect the most.”

Her photography has also helped her get through the coronavirus pandemic.

“Everything is very uncertain right now. I had to reschedule a few portraits sessions and even conduct a client meeting via Zoom. To my surprise, there are still a lot of booking inquiries coming in. To me, it assures me that art has

always been a way to cope or improve the quality of someone’s life. Imagine being in isolation without your favourite TV show or some form of entertainment? I never dreamt that I could create something that someone can value and cherish,” she said.

The pandemic has also pushed her to create work outside of her favoured medium.

“I began painting for the first time in years and it was very cathartic for me,” she said. “As I continue to develop my craft, I hope that my photographic style will be recognised and appreciated beyond our shores.”

Life cycles and repetition in the garden

I

am probably sounding like a broken record on some of this, but it can also feel like the movie “Groundhog Day”… waking up to find something ravaging those lovely veggies, again and again! The Summer weather is cranking up, poinciana flowers are bursting and that is a signal that the Summer season is here, and so are some of those very same problems that I touched on last week: caterpillars, snails, slugs, and weeds.

If you are lucky enough to have a few minutes to spend in the garden, you may have been dealing with these issues already. Pest control is a repetitive cycle, just like the life cycles of the very same pests that are plaguing my garden, and I know that I am not alone. Many folks are battling the same issues as the life cycle of these garden pests kicks into high gear. I know it can get repetitive, but the good news is that if you are applying controls, this too shall pass.

My veggie patch has been hit hard with caterpillars, snails and slugs this week. As it has been raining, controls have been difficult to apply. Snail bait (not the toxic blue stuff. I have said it before and I will say it again, please try to use eco, pet, and family friendly controls) will slow the propagation of slugs and snails. Bacillus thuringiensis (BT, Dipel) or Spinosad will control caterpillars.

It is not just the veggie patch being impacted.

Bougainvillea is another plant that is very susceptible to caterpillars, right now. Just as they are beginning to flush with new growth, the caterpillars are right behind it ready to feast on all that soft, fresh leaf growth. The same controls mentioned above will take care of this problem as well. I would like to point out though, that as soon as the caterpillars start chewing all those fresh leaves, it also signals that it is a perfect time to prune. I prefer to prune bougainvillea prior to spraying, as by pruning, not only is thicker branching being promoted, it also allows the spray to penetrate better and to contact more of the plant leaves, so that a more thorough control measure can be applied. It also removes some of the very same leaf that the caterpillars are looking for. If you can get ahead of the chewing pests, the reward is a much fuller bloom, earlier on in the growth cycle.

THE CHINCH bug

CATERPILLAR damage on bougainvillea leaf For those with St Augustine lawn grass (often called crab grass), chinch bugs (Blissus sp.) are becoming evident if early controls were not implemented already. Chinch bugs create brown spots in the grass, but by the time the browning becomes noticeable the pest has already moved on from that immediate area into the green surrounding area. There are both granular (applied

by rotary spreader or similar) and spray controls (applied by spraying liquid) available on the market. It is important to apply as evenly and uniformly as possible to ensure complete coverage. If part of the lawn has been affected and is showing dead spots, then once the treatments are completed and left to dry or absorb, the dead patches can be greened up by taking small sprigs from other parts of the lawn and planted in the dead spots.

Chinch bugs, just like all other pests, will show up at just about the same time, often within the same week, every year. If the timing is right, and controls are applied early enough in the lifecycle of a given pest, then that pest is easier to manage through the whole season. If remediation is required because the pest was allowed to get ahead of treatments, it may take a little more work, but then again, we don’t garden for only the mental or spiritual therapy that it can provide, it can be quite physical! Remember to bend at the knees. Happy gardening!

Katya goes live with online mini concerts

I

NSPIRED by the live feeds and posts by various artists during quarantine, singer Katya Paisley took to her social media to share her talent with her supporters and followers. And so the “Weekend Sessions With Katya” were born. The young artist has hosted three episodes so far, every Sunday at 4pm, performing both original material and covers of songs by some of her favourite artists.

“I saw so many other people going on live every day, from celebrities to peers. I felt like it would be a good opportunity for me to share my music and a bit of myself with people. I was nervous at first and put it off for weeks, but eventually I made the time and just jumped right in. It feels like I’m really making use of the small platform I have to bring to a bit of joy to others. Most people are at home, not working with nothing to do. It’s a stressful and confusing time. It makes me happy to know that I can provide a comfortable and fun experience for people in the midst this madness,” said Katya.

The singer, songwriter and producer said she started out in the music industry by posting song covers on YouTube, which then evolved into releasing original music in 2017. Since then, she has released a number of singles, including “20/20” featuring the late MDeez, and her most recent release entitled “Hush”. In 2018, she performed a set for Patio Jams at the University of Miami and went on to win an Elevation Award for New Artist of the Year in 2019. Later that same year, after the devastation of Hurricane Dorian, Katya, along with a number of other Bahamians artists, was invited to sing

on Perro Grande’s climate disaster healing song “One World”.

“Successfully starting and sustaining the ‘Weekend With Katya’ series has been an accomplishment in and of itself. I was very nervous to get into it. I thought nobody would be interested, but I proved myself wrong. I’m glad that I have kept this going. It’s opened some new doors for me and my music career as well which is wonderful,” said Katya.

During the live sessions Katya usually sings five to seven songs. She has performed her original song “Time Go By,” as well as Sade’s “Lover’s Rock”, and tunes from artists like SZA, Ari Lennox and Jhené Aiko.

“During Mental Health Awareness Week, I did a self-care Sunday theme. I sang relaxing songs and did my skincare routine with a friend while we discussed what we do to reduce our stress and anxiety. The last session was just after George Floyd’s death, during the tons of Black Lives Matter protests around the world. Because of this, I used that session to spread awareness of the cause, have discussions in the comments about racism, and got people to donate and sign petitions,” she said.

To further interact with her audience, Katya always includes a question and answer segment in her live sessions.

“The feedback has been extremely supportive. Friends and family tuned in at first, but now. since they’ve been sharing it with their friends and followers, the word’s been spreading. Everybody enjoys it. People have told me it’s like a relaxing break from the boredom of quarantine for them when they watch,” she said.

HO of us has not belted out a ballad in the shower and maybe secretly hoped someone would overhear our “concert” and discover our “talent”? Well, this is almost how it went down for local songstress Melody Sweeting. But instead of a shower, her vocal talents were discovered in the kitchen.

“Surprisingly, my career began by mistake with no thoughts that this was a career choice,” the singer told Tribune Weekend. “I was a fill-in pastry chef at The Landing, a beautiful restaurant on the waterfront of Harbour Island. Toby Tyler, who was at the time the owner and manager there, heard me singing in the kitchen preparing desserts and invited me into his studio, which unbeknownst to me, was also on the property. About a week later, maybe, he decided to start a band. There was probably 20 to 15 of us in the band.”

What started as an impromptu venture turned into Melody performing with several Bahamian bands and to her now carving a path for herself as a professional singer.

“By the time we booked our first gig to perform at Harbour Island Regatta in October 2008 we were already down to 10 members,” Melody said recalling the beginnings of her musical career.

Prior to that, Melody had dreamt of performing at popular venues around Nassau, and that dream came true when she was invited to take the stage and entertain guests at places like Frankie

Gone Bananas, Margaritaville, the Tiki Hut, Pirate Public, and Aquafire.

“I’ve been a part of so many different bands and environments that I’m now able to walk onto a stage with nothing in mind but my audience. I am not one to come with a set list or a show planned. It is always raw, unpredictable, but fully focused on helping the audience create their own special moments and memories of a lifetime. Whether you are incredibly young or wise, I’ve got you covered,” she said.

Performing with several local bands allowed Melody to hone her skills and increase her visibility as a performer.

“Each band taught me different skills. I have learned to become a chameleon of an entertainer, approaching each performance with vigour and a ‘can do’ mindset and attitude. In addition, I have worked in the hospitality industry for some time, holding positions that gave me the chance to create or add something special to the guests’ Bahamian experience.

My singing and hospitality background then pushed me into the world of karaoke, where I’ve further learned to host events, emcee and deejay,” she said.

Melody is now fully focused on developing her two-member band called MnM. She shares the stage with percussionist Mario Lord. The duo covers a wide range of genres.

“I had the gift of singing and Mario had the gift of marketing and a great personality... we saw something that was working for us and we ran with it,” she said.

Pascalli says goodbye to lockdown with some ‘Kwarantine Riddim’

ahamian singer-songwriter Pascalli has dropped a new dancehall compilation mixtape aptly called “Kwarantine Riddim” which she hopes will lighten the mood of music lovers in these troubling

times.

The artist released the new record under her music production company Mogul Beatz, which co-owns with production partner and dancehall legend Red Rat. Pascalli told Tribune Weekend the album was inspired by her experience in lockdown. It was released on June 11.

“I wanted to lighten the mood by creating a pop dancehall sound. I was at home bored just tired watching Netflix and was looking for something to do, and then the beat just came to me and that is how I came up with the idea,” she said.

“The album is entitled ‘Kwarantine Riddim’ because that is how Caribbean people pronounce Quarantine,” she said.

Pascalli’s solo track on the mix tape is called “Hard Core Love”.

“I got the inspiration for the song from talking to a lot of my girlfriends and they were saying how they missed their significant others in lockdown and they were running on ‘E’. So the song is about a woman who wants her man to come over for some hard core love... It is a very flirty song,” she said.

Drake tops BET Awards nods; show to air on CBS for first time

BET announced this week that Drake is nominated for six honours, including video of the year and best male hip-hop artist. For both best collaboration and the viewer’s choice award, Drake is nominated twice thanks to the hits “No Guidance” with Chris Brown and “Life Is Good” with Future.

Breakthrough rappers Megan Thee Stallion and Roddy Ricch follow Drake with five nominations each. Megan Thee Stallion, who recently topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart with her Beyoncéassisted “Savage” remix, is nominated for video of the year, best female hip-hop artist, best collaboration, the viewer’s choice award and album of the year for “Fever.”

Ricch, who won his first Grammy Award earlier this year, also topped the pop charts with his upbeat hit “The Box.” The video for that song is nominated for video of the year alongside DaBaby’s “Bop,” DJ Khaled, Nipsey Hussle and John Legend’s “Higher,” Doja Cat’s “Say So,” Megan The Stallion’s “Hot Girl Summer” and Chris Brown and Drake’s “No Guidance.”

Beyoncé, Minaj, Brown, Lizzo and DaBaby earned four nominations each.

Pascalli ventured into singing and songwriting in 2009. Well-known Jamaican dancehall reggae artist Wallace Wilson, better known by the stage name Red Rat, recognised her talent as both a pop singer and songwriter.

In 2016, Pascalli and Red Rat began a music production team called Mogul Beatz, collaborating with artists from around the world in various genres - pop, Afro beats, hip hop, trap, R&B, reggaeton, dancehall and also EDM. Last year, she earned a plaque for co-writing a song by Red Rat entitled “Higher”, produced by DJ Buddha, which attained over 21 million streams on Spotify and which was also licenced by the Zumba fitness brand.

Pascalli has co-written songs for artists such as Jori Boy (“Para Mi”), Elise (“1-800 Amor”), and Chip featuring Red Rat, Alkaline and Steph London (“My Girl”).

She also got the chance to work with Grammywinning producers DJ Blackout from Blackout Movements and Maffio, along with multi-platinum selling producer Troyton Remi from Black Shadow Records, and has also recently completed a song with dancehall artists Beenie Man, Kes, Assassin and Leftside.

Pascalli has been in the studio, vigorously working on completing her debut EP while singing and performing all over the world.

Raise a glass to front-line workers

encouraging people to raise a beer to essential workers and those on the front lines fighting COVID-19.

This online campaign by the local beer brand will reach its climax on Independence Day, July 10.

According to Jared Cartwright, Kalik brand representative, the campaign seeks to recognise unsung heroes who have been playing an integral role in making the lives of others better.

“This platform allows front-line workers as well as those who may not be on the front line but are fighting daily for a better Bahamas to receive national recognition for their selfless service and acts of kindness,” he said.

So far the brand has recognised about 20 front-liners on their Facebook and other social media pages, and they’ve have been receiving more entries daily.

“We are happy with the support that we are receiving as many of the entries are persons other than front-liners who are showing acts of kindness, whether it be rental assistance, the provision of groceries and other necessities, which reminds us the Bahamian spirit of brotherhood is still alive and vibrant,” he said.

Mr Cartwright said it is the brand’s duty to recognise the amazing men and women that are propelling our nation forward through stellar service and brotherly love.

“Each time there’s an adversity that comes to our shores the resilient Bahamian spirit, which

is built on brotherhood, manifests, and it’s only fitting that we provide a vehicle for our people to say ‘thank you’ to their heroes,” he said.

Consumers who are able to, are encouraged to #RaiseAKalik to an outstanding individual they have come into contact with.

“The campaign is getting a lot of love and applause. Bahamians at home and abroad are embracing the campaign,” said Mr Cartwright.

Kimmel to host Emmys, first major awards show of pandemic LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jimmy Kimmel will host the first major Hollywood awards ceremony of the coronavirus pandemic — but just how the Emmys will be held remains cloudy.

Kimmel, who is also producing the September 20 ceremony on ABC honouring TV’s best, acknowledged that in Tuesday’s announcement.

“I don’t know where we will do this or how we will do this or even why we are doing this, but we are doing it and I am hosting it,” the ABC late-night host said in a statement.

The network said details on the show’s production will be announced soon. Choosing Kimmel to emcee the ceremony reverses course from last year’s no-host Emmys.

The 93rd Academy Awards will be held April 25, 2021, eight weeks later than planned, and the British Academy Film Awards is shifting its originally announced February 2021 ceremony to April 11.

The Emmy Awards are considered a kickoff for the new TV season that traditionally begins in September, although virus-caused production delays have raised questions about whether shows will be ready to air as planned.

Nominations for the 72nd prime-time Emmys will be announced by the TV academy on July 28.

Bahamian staple returns just in time for Father’s Day

hen Prime Minister Hubert Minnis announced that crab vendors would be able to resume street sales last month, there was a collective sigh of relief.

After all, it is a well-known joke that the only thing Bahamian men get for Father’s Day is a Sunday dinner of crab n’ rice.

This Father’s Day on Sunday promises to be a special one. Unlike Easter, Mother’s Day, and the Whit Monday and Labour Day holidays, which occurred during the height of the pandemic, there is no weekend lockdown in place, church services have resumed, and the coronavirus curve appears to have been completely flattened, making this the first holiday in months that will have some sense of normalcy to it.

And while we hope our readers will enjoy a chance to see the fathers and father figures in their lives, we remind everyone to remain cautious and stay safe.

A dish of crab, whether it be in rice, in a soup, boiled or baked, is sure to be on the menu of most Bahamian families this weekend.

And if you still are looking for the perfect Father’s Day gift for the chef and crab lover in your life, here are a few options that tie into the traditional crab dinner.

If he doesn’t already have one, a crab pen is the perfect gift for dad so that he can have a place to keep his crabs until he is ready to cook them. It can be customised to house just a few crabs or even several dozen at once, and is the perfect choice for the hobby chef who wants to feed his crabs fat for several days rather than cooking them right away.

And when the time comes to make those delicious crab dishes we just mentioned, make sure that Dad has the perfect cooking utensils and pots to get the job done.

Preparing a seafood spice blend is another idea that is inexpensive yet thoughtful. Just combine all the spices that add flavour to his pot and present them in a specialty jar that he can use throughout his Summer crab cooking adventures.

Eating crabs is supper messy and two fun gifts may be a personalised bib for Dad, an apron with a crab image, or even a set of tools such as a mallet and a crab knife.

If the guy in your life isn’t a chef but loves eating crabs, find your favourite family recipe, get the pot boiling and get ready to wish him a wonderful day with a Bahamian favourite.

First to the top Sir Christopher Ondaatje remembers the New Zealand mountaineer who, with Sherpa Norgay Tenzing, became one of the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953.

“I’m sure the feeling of fear, as long as you can take advantage of it and not be rendered useless by it, can make you extend yourself beyond what you would regard as your capacity. If you’re afraid, the blood seems to flow freely through the veins, and you really do feel a sense of stimulation.” - Sir Edmund Hillary Sir Edmund Hillary was born on July 20, 1919 to Percival Augustus and Gertrude Hillary in Auckland, New Zealand. His father was an apiarist (beekeeper) and founding editor of the Tuakau District

News. He was educated at Tuakau Primary School and Auckland Grammar School.

He cycled and commuted by train from Tuakau to Auckland for three and a half years – a journey lasting from 7am until 6pm – until the family moved to Remuera, Auckland in 1935. He was small and shy but he had stamina and grew more confident after taking up boxing.

When he was 16 he became interested in climbing after a school trip to Mount Ruapehu in North Island, New Zealand. He went to Auckland University but gave up studying after two years and joined his father and brother attending to 1600 bee hives which produced thousands of 90-pound boxes of honey, and enduring sometimes as many as a hundred bee stings daily.

In 1928, when he was 19, he went to Gisborne, a city in North Eastern New Zealand, as the assistant to Herbert Sutcliffe, the proponent of the “Radiant Living” philosophy, lecturing, gaining confidence and learning about healthy eating and living.

Zealand. He met Harry Ayres and George Lowe – the first real friends he had ever had.

At the outbreak of World War II Hillary joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) – but quickly withdrew his application, riddled by his religious conscience. Later, in 1943, with the Japanese threat looming in the Pacific, he changed his mind and joined the RNZAF, first as a navigator on No. 6 Squadron, later switching to No. 5 Squadron on Catalina Flying Boats. He was sent to Fiji and the Solomon Islands in 1945 and was badly burnt in an accident.

In January 1948, Hillary ascended the south ridge of Aoraki, Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain. This led to him and George Lowe being sent as part of a 1951 British reconnaissance expedition to Mount Everest led

by Eric Shipton. Before joining the eventually successful British attempt to climb the highest mountain in the world in 1953, Hillary and Lowe were led by Eric Shipton on an unsuccessful expedition to climb Cho Oyu in Tibet, at 26,864 feet, the sixth highest mountain in the world. The expedition failed because of the lack of a route from the Nepal side. Hillary and Lowe crossed the Nug La pass into Tibet and reached the Old Camp II, on the northern side, where previous expeditions had camped.

“Eric Shipton had earlier confided his doubts that we would find a satisfactory route up the south side of Everest ... and the main point of the reconnaissance was to explore the untouched mountains to both the East and West of Everest.”

Shipton invited Hillary to join him on a reconnaissance of a prominent ridge on the peak Pumori. Maybe from there, he supposed, they would be able to see if any practical route existed up Everest. The two mountaineers crossed over the moraine at the bottom of the ridge and climbed slowly upwards, first to 19,000 feet and then up steeper rock and ice to nearly 20,000 feet.

“Puffing a little from the altitude, we turned and looked toward the Khumbu Icefall and the Western Cwm. Our eyes swept up the tumbled icefall into the cwm, and up the steep slopes to the South Col. Overcome with amazement, we realised that ... a formidable but potential route did indeed exist up the mountain from this side.

Bubbling with excitement, we returned to our Base Camp on the near side of the Khumbu Glacier to convey this news to our companions.”

- Sir Edmund Hillary, “View From the Summit”, 1999 This really was good news because the longstanding route to the summit of Everest was closed by Chinese-controlled Tibet. For the next several years Nepal allowed only one or two expeditions a year. In October 1951, Eric Shipton and Hillary, with two Sherpas, attacked the icefall again and were confident that they had solved the problem of climbing Everest from the south and that the next year they would return well equipped to tackle the upper part of the mountain. Arriving back in Kathmandu they were warmly welcomed by the British Ambassador, Sir

Christopher Summerhayes, who first congratulated them on having found a new route up Everest and then telling them, to their horror, that the Swiss had obtained permission for two attempts on the mountain the following year, 1952. Their dreams were shattered.

All they could do now was wait to see what the Swiss achieved.

However, the Swiss expedition (in which Norgay Tenzing took part) attempted to reach the summit but was forced back by bad weather and problems with oxygen sets 800 feet below the summit.

Eric Shipton had been named as the leader of the expedition, but was replaced by Colonel John Hunt. Hillary objected to the appointment but was soon impressed by Hunt’s energy and determination. Hunt asked Charles Evans and Hillary to form with him a small three-man planning group on the expedition.

“Hillary’s testing in the Himalayas had shown that he would be a very strong contender, not only for Everest, but for an eventual summit party. When I met Shipton last autumn, I well remember his prophesying this – and how right he was. Quite exceptionally strong and abounding in a restless energy, possessed of a thrusting mind which swept away all unproven obstacles.

The 1953 Hunt expedition totalled 400 people, including 362 porters, 20 Sherpa guides, and 10,000 pounds of baggage. Lowe supervised the preparation of the Lhotse Face, a huge and steep ice face, for climbing. Hillary forged a route through the treacherous Khumbu Icefall.

Hillary had hoped to climb with Lowe, but Hunt named two teams for the ascent. Tom Bourdillon and Charles Evans; and Hillary and Tenzing.

SIR Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Norgay Tenzing Hillary therefore made a concerted effort to forge a friendship with Tenzing.

According to the standards of those days in 1953, the British expedition was huge – not in numbers of climbers as there were only 11 – but in the 800 porter-loads that had to be carried into Tengboche Monastery. Who’s your daddy?

Don’t ask a DNA test

The headlines are lurid and seemingly nonsensical. How can a man bear financial responsibility for a child that is not “his”? How can he be denied legal paternity of a child whom he conceived?

The gist of these stories is that such outcomes are not only ludicrous but unjust. Such tales not only appear in the mainstream media but provide fodder for men’s rights websites and have even inspired bills to make DNA testing mandatory at birth, though none has actually become law.

But history suggests such cases are not so strange. In fact, they follow from a long tradition in which paternity was a social and legal relationship, not a biological one.

After all, it was only in the 1980s that DNA testing emerged, with its promise to reveal the identity of the biological father. For most of human history, no such technology existed – nor was it missed. Paternity was based on presumption, deduced from social behaviors and legal conventions.

Father, by tradition Historically, the father was defined by marriage.

Pater est quem nuptiae, in the Roman formulation: The father is he whom marriage indicates, even in circumstances when, well, he could not be. The tradition carried forward over the centuries. According to 17th-century English common law, for example, if a husband was located anywhere within the “Four Seas” of the King of England at the time of his wife’s conception, he was legally presumed the father of her child.

As for children born out of wedlock, courts, especially those operating in the civil law tradition, deduced paternity from a man’s actions or public reputation. The father was he who cohabited with the mother or kissed the baby in public, the man whom a neighbour saw paying the wet nurse. Paternity was performative.

Such definitions of fatherhood did not mean it was less certain or less true: It was simply that the truth of paternity was social, not physical.

This situation contrasted with the logic of maternity. Mater certissima est – the mother is always certain, in the Roman formulation. Maternal identity could presumably be known by the physical facts of pregnancy and birth.

A more muddled modern landscape Today, according to some observers, reproductive technologies like surrogacy and egg donation have disrupted the certainty of the Roman dictum on maternity. After all, maternal identity is not so obvious when the gestational mother who births the child and the genetic one whose egg creates it can be two different people.

By contrast, DNA was supposed to make biological paternity certain. And yet the older reasoning that long defined paternity as a social relationship endures.

Today, family law in the US and elsewhere continues to recognise nonbiological lines of reasoning. A man’s behaviour, intent, the nature of his relationship with the mother, stability in a preexisting parent-child relationship – all these criteria, rather than biology, may define the father.

If anything, reproductive technologies like sperm donation and new family forms, like those born of the frequency of divorce, have only multiplied the scenarios in which biology may take a backseat to social criteria.

But in some contexts, the biological continues to prevail. This is often the case in immigration and citizenship law. Kin relations play a central role in immigration proceedings in the U.S. and other countries because citizens can sponsor close relatives to immigrate, and under certain circumstances refugees have a right to join family members in their adopted country.

Increasingly, countries that are migration destinations use DNA to verify family relationships.

In May 2019, for instance, the US Department of Homeland Security began a pilot programme to test Central American migrant families at the southern border.

As critics have noted, this practice imposes a narrow, biological definition of family. Kinship practices like adoption, step-parenthood and relationships based on a social understanding of parentage are considered perfectly legitimate

when practiced by natives but are vilified as fraudulent and criminal when practiced by foreigners.

These apparently contradictory definitions of parentage reflect the fact that paternity’s definition varies depending on whose parentage is at stake – and how much power they hold.

Law and custom have always purposefully obfuscated the fatherhood of certain categories of men: the slave owner, the priest, the coloniser, the soldier. Thomas Jefferson’s paternity of Sally Hemings’ children was publicly obscured for two centuries. In an entirely different historical context, German women after World War II found it impossible to bring paternity suits against American soldiers who had fathered their children.

The fact that some fathers, like Jefferson and the GIs, have remained strategically uncertain suggests the very notion of paternal uncertainty is not a biological axiom but a political idea.

Over the last century, the distinction between legitimate and illegitimate children has lost much of its social and legal significance in the West.

The once markedly different criteria for proving maternity versus paternity have largely, though not entirely, disappeared.

New dynamics of discrimination have also arisen as assisted reproductive technologies and same-sex couples produce new permutations of family.

With the dawn of the DNA era, many observers predicted that, by revealing the truth of paternity, genetic science would one day abolish ambiguity and deliver equality and justice. Today science can indeed find a father, but its impact has been rather more complex than once anticipated.

Instead of sweeping away older social and legal definitions with a new biogenetic one, it has actually heightened the tensions between different ways of defining paternity.

Who’s your daddy? Perhaps science isn’t best positioned to answer, because this question arises from society, not nature. It might not be the right question anyway. A better one is, what does society want a father to be?

I

t has been my good fortune to have seen each and every island of the Bahamas. To claim to have seen every inch of every island would be an exaggeration, but only slightly, because of all the hours and miles that I piloted the police patrol plane. Flying air taxi and scheduled flights was much more restricting, because there are numerous airstrips where the airliners cannot operate. The smaller air taxi planes can land almost anywhere, but flights to places like Cay Sal, Little Whale Cay, Mores Island, Ragged Island, Rum Cay don’t come up every day. Although I was more than competent enough to fly the plane, the police observers taught me what to look for. In my early days, their eyes were much sharper than mine and I was a willing learner.

The more I flew, the more curious I became. We would look down and see totally abandoned settlements, real ‘ghost towns’, except that none of them ever was a real town. How was this possible? The answers are simple.

Most of the settlements originated during the Loyalist period of our history, when thousands of British subjects who had lost their plantations in Britain’s 13 former colonies American came here.

Left is a euphemism, because huge acreages were simply confiscated by the new-born United States of America, mostly without compensation, and the owners fled to other British territories, including the Bahamas. They arrived by the boatload, accompanied by their slaves who outnumbered their owners.

At this time there was nobody living on the majority of the Out Islands and countless land-hungry Loyalists were given Crown grants on all islands, including Long Island. I choose Long island because, thanks to Amanda Graham, I have access to the 1792 map of that island, showing 276 such grants.

The biggest was 5,00 acres, which the governor, Lord Dunmore, saw fit to grant to himself. Adjacent to Dunmore’s was a 200-acre grant to Alexander McQueen, my mother’s third great grandfather.

Apart from the family connection, this one of my ancestors was also granted land near the southern end of Cat Island, where a settlement called McQueen’s still appears on the map, though Philip “Brave” Davis tells me that it is no longer inhabited.

The life of a Loyalist on Long Island was anything but easy. Imagine sailing into the place we know as Clarence Town, knowing that 700 acres belonged to you, but the whole island looked the same: just bush, bush and more bush. There was no decent anchorage, no grocery stores, no Chinese laundry, no shops, no roads, no McDonalds and no KFC. Day by day, month by month, year by year, the plantations took shape and settlements were named after their owners. Even today, many of the settlements on Long Island are still called by the family names of their “founding” fathers, including Dunmore’s.

Bush had to be cleared, by the slaves of course, houses had to be built, vegetables planted and fish caught. Then came cotton, the thing that would make the islands rich. Slowly, footpaths were created, linking the various parts of one’s acreage and, eventually, to one’s neighbours on both sides so that the day came when one could travel by road from one end of the island to the other, as long as one was willing to walk. There were no vehicles, because there were no roads for vehicles, but there may have been a few horses.

Another thing that the slaves built were the dry rock walls that can still be seen from the air, crisscrossing through bush that looks like no human had ever set foot there. Those people, black and white, were hardy souls and active nation-builders...then along came the chenille bug. Hundreds of acres of cotton fields were devoured by millions of those voracious eaters until there was no cotton left for them to eat. The dream had ended and many of the dreamers fled the Bahamas in desperation, leaving behind thousands of slaves, many of whom had to fend for themselves.

There are many entirely black settlements in the islands; Gregory Town is one of these. They are named after their Loyalist founders, whose names have remained but whose existence has been forgotten. Many smaller settlements could not sustain their inhabitants, who moved away, leaving ghost towns in their wakes.

Some years ago, a team from the European Union came to the Bahamas offering financial aid for worthy projects. Trans Island Airways flew them to several islands and I was the pilot on their flight to Crooked Island and Acklins. At Crooked Island, we picked up the island’s commissioner and took a close look at Acklins, where the Europeans hoped to create a modern fishing industry with purpose-built vessels, sturdy docks, refrigeration and in-house transport to freight planes to carry the catch to market.

For my part, I was amazed by how many of the settlements we flew over had zero population. But while we saw no people, the abandoned building below us looked lived in. However, the Europeans doubted that the islands could support such fishing and I never heard any more about that project.
