rowing up, Selene Adderley said dessert time was always a big deal for her family, especially for her younger sister Serena, who has Down syndrome and loves ice cream.

“We would always enjoy our Sunday drives to the ice-cream parlor. The feeling of happiness that came from that was one I wanted to share with others, she told Tribune Weekend.

Hence, the creation of Chill C Roll Bar,” said Selene of her new business.

She describes her mobile catering company as one that offers a variety of “exotic: ice cream flavors “made live” at any event.

Selene and her team pride themselves on being able to bring a taste of the islands to you in an unforgettable way The way the Chill C Roll Bar works is that Selene and her team set up a mobile station with a variety of flavours, choppings and toppings to choose from.

“It wouldn’t be Bahamian if we didn’t have guava, dilly and sugar apple. We also carry luxury chocolates, alcohol-infused, cookies and cream and many more flavours,” she said.

“We pride ourselves on having superb customer service, making all rolled ice creams with the freshest ingredients and treating customers as family. We never want them to leave without a smile.”

Selene she loves her job because she gets to meet new people all the time and help make their special experiences even more special. She tailors the experience to fit each customer’s vision “My goal is to become a franchise owner,” she said.

Bahamas Bridal Show makes dreams comes true Couples left this year’s Bahamas Bridal Show with a smile on their face.

Held at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, the 32nd annual event was held under the theme “One Lifetime”.

After two years of postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions on large events, the big event was finally back.

Brides- and grooms-to-be were able to peruse the booths of more than 50 local wedding vendors so help them in the planning of their big day.

The icing on the cake was of course the fashion show, with the theatrically staged scenes “I Do,” It’s My Day,” “Chosen,” “Pearls & Lace,” “Speechless,” and “One Lifetime.”

The Bridal Show was organised by Bahamas Sports and Events and Buttons Bridal and Formal Wear, which provided gowns and tuxedos for the fashion show.

Couples won $30,000 in gifts and prizes, including a complete wedding, $10,000 off a new home, a honeymoon, bridal attire, limousine serves, invitation and much more.

Say it in a poem

SING her talent to help others express themselves is one of the main goals behind Candice Rolle’s unique Island Sheek Poet venture.

The Bahamian poet believes everyone has a story to tell, and the world deserves to hear it, even when you’re gone. Through her poetry platform, she encourages people to share their thoughts, which she then shapes into a poem which can be read or presented at special occasions.

“The motto is: we capture, create a frame and deliver. Every piece captures the heart of the client, person, couple or event,” said Candice.

The process starts with a client interview, or in some cases, with a completed questionnaire.

“We take those words and create a unique poem. We can set the atmosphere at your next event. What is the purpose of your event? What message do you want the attendees to leave with? What kind of energy do

you want to flow? We can translate your vision.”

Candice first realised she could captivate others with her words while performing during the talent segment of the Miss Gospel Bahamas pageant in 2011.

“I struggled with choosing my talent but knew that I would have to showcase my most impressionable gift to win the competition. At the last minute, a poem flowed through me that captured the vision of the pageant and changed the atmosphere in the room. I couldn’t understand what happened fully, but I knew I had tapped into something worth pursuing,” she said.

“In 2019, after a few years on my job in the finance industry, I developed a desire to do more. This desire pushed me to think about what I could offer the world. This is when poetry came to mind. ‘How can poetry serve the world,’ I thought.

Well, after posing this question to myself and thinking about the great impact of the poets before me, I

realised that I too could use the power of poetry for good.”

Candice developed the idea for personalised and decided to run with it.

“My first clients were a couple and I was afraid. The concept sounded good but capturing someone’s heart and gaining their approval was nerve-wrecking. It was a lot like the art of photography; anybody can take a picture, but a good photographer can use a camera and tell an entire story through one photo. We capture words, create poetry, frame and deliver it. I don’t want people to worry about how they will express their heart or vision ever again. I am here to serve them in this capacity because someone deserves to hear the heart of the matter.”

Candice said she knows it will take some time for people to fully embrace the idea of personalised poetry as a purchasable service, but she is sure they will soon recognise its value.

“I like seeing the reaction of clients when they hear and read their

I know that poetry can change atmospheres, tempos and moods. I believe more than ever that with a new understanding of how fleeting life is that people want to connect and express themselves while they can to the ones they love. This motivates me to keep pushing this craft in whatever way I can so that I can mend the bridge between intention and expression,” she said.

Her favourite poem she has written so far was for a couple and is called “Heavenly In Love with You”.

For the remainder of the year, Candice said she hopes to partner with other poets to expand her reach and gain business guidance and assistance from other organisations such as the Small Business Development Centre.

Grand Bahama native sees art as a language of love

rt has always has been a safe space, a therapeutic tool for Kristin Garvey. And now the pandemic has inspired her to take her art to the next level.

“I’ll honestly admit that I hadn’t created much since I left high school over ten years ago, but felt inspired to pick up a paintbrush again when we first entered the pandemic two years ago. Can I tell you that I haven’t put a paintbrush down since then? Nor do I plan to.”

There’s a sense tranquility to be found in taking a paintbrush to blank canvas and watching something colourful appear.

Creating is so therapeutic because by focusing on something like the small details needed to turn a triangle into a flower petal, you can take a mental break from the world.

It is so rewarding to then find that you made something that also resonates with someone else and inspires them in their own way,” said the Grand Bahama native.

She told Tribune Weekend her fascination with art was first sparked in primary school when she and her classmates were taught how to mix additional colours from primary colours.

While art class was always fun, Kristin didn’t consider herself particularly talented, that was until she met her late high school teacher William “Bill” Nelson.

She recalls a homework assignment where she was told to choose a picture of an object from a magazine and do her best to draw and shade the object with coloured pencils.

“Again, simple enough, right? Well, for me, I was constantly told to review my work for almost two weeks while my classmates moved on to painting. Finally frustrated, I brought my drawing back to Mr Nelson and told him that I did my absolute best at perfecting this jar of Avon face cream and knew within myself that I had completed the assignment. ‘Alrighty then’, was his response and he drew an ‘A’ on my paper. What? That was all it took? That day Mr Nelson taught me that as an artist I have to challenge myself and push my limits to improve my talent, and by keeping that in mind, only I can know when my work is complete. Mr Nelson had a raw, breathtaking talent and deep appreciation for the arts which was truly infectious.

He was an amazing artist with works all over Grand Bahama, the Bahamas, and the world at large, and I’m so thankful that I had the privilege to have met him and have him as a teacher.”

Even now, after she has spent years honing her skills, Kristin said she’s still her own biggest critic. So while she can acknowledge that she has grown as an artist, she also admits that she still has a long way to go.

“By keeping at it and constantly challenging myself to create new pieces I have definitely noticed growth in my work and I’m always having moments of ‘ohhhh…this is how I should make this work’. Practice doesn’t make perfect, as I’m always trying to remember that perfection doesn’t exist, but it certainly makes for improvement.

The more that I create, the more my work is out there in the world to be seen and hopefully inspire someone else to create too.”

Kristin said all her work is in acrylic paint on cotton canvases of various sizes.

Having a love for the outdoors, Kristin said she is often inspired by nature – the swimming pigs, a

blue marlin splashing in the water, turtles, stingrays, and colourful flowers.

Her brand is called Kris Ebony Artistry (www. krisebonyartistry.com).

“While my abstract pieces tend to be largerthan-life paint pours often done on 36” x 48” wrapped canvases with oceanic hues, where I can paint freely without huge attention detail. These abstract paintings are often accented with gold and silver foils and make great statement pieces. I have also done quite a few abstract paintings with acrylic paint on terracotta plant pots, though I would not say I’m the best plant mom out there.”

However, for Kristin art is much more than just a revenue stream.

“Art is a love language. Art is, for many people, a way to express themselves. It can be enlightening, it can be provoking and bring about much needed conversations, and it can inspire change.

Art keeps culture alive by allowing history to be passed on in various forms. Junkanoo rush-outs during Christmas, dancers hittin’ the conch style on stage during Independence, thespians acting out a scene about heroism, and a simple painting of children playing in the street, are all forms of art which have been passed down in our beautiful Bahamaland for generations,” she said.

Her most recent passion is hand-painting wooden coaster sets. She said the colour combinations are endless and they seem to be a really big hit with her clients. The wooden ‘Koaster’ sets are painted with acrylics, double-sealed with resin, cushioned with foam, and come in sets of four. The process, she said, is quite a lengthy one, but the result makes it worth it.

“I am truly humbled and eternally thankful to God for the amazing feedback I’ve received on my work. Words cannot express how much it means and how full my heart becomes to hear someone say that one of my pieces brought them joy. I am blessed to have had the opportunity of packaging custom pieces for long voyages to as far as the Netherlands. I have also been honoured in commissioning custom pieces for expats to take a piece of Grand Bahama home with them after falling love with this great island even after weathering through Hurricane Dorian. Knowing that my art brought about tears of joy? I’m an emotional cancer sign and I definitely cried too. It’s amazing how great of a tool social media can be once used correctly and for positivity. I’ve had people near and far from all over the world reach out to me to offer encouraging words, share my work, and purchase my pieces.”

Dads get in the kitchen for preFather’s Day culinary master class

ahamian dads got a chance to bond with their children in a non-traditional way in the lead-up to Father’s Day this Sunday – by coming together in a kitchen to cook and bake.

The pre-Father’s Day event “Baking with the Bishop’s Son” offered a culinary master class which saw dads engage in a unique experience.

It was presented by Chef Simeon Hall, Jr, along with The Kitchen at Baha Mar, and was designed as an interactive baking class “set out to break the tradition of crab dishes for fathers and present to the dads an out-of-the-box experience.”

“We all know that crab n’ rice in the Bahamas is the national gift for fathers. I had to change that. I wanted to go totally left from that stereotype. And truthfully, baking is one of my favourite things to do in the kitchen, so I figured others would like it too,” said Chef Hall.

During the class, the fathers participated in what Chef Hall dubbed “a reverse dinner, with the first course of being dessert and the final being a soup.”

“We had rose hibiscus doughnuts donated by our partners at Bakehouse, then we had Andros wild hog ribs, tamarind glazed, and baby vegetables. Following that was birria tacos, consomme, and lastly, Field Day tomato three-ingredient soup, cheese raviolis and local tomatoes,” he said.

The fathers not only received welcome drinks from Moet & Chandon Champagne and indulged in local creations prepared by Chef Hall and his team, they also baked goods from scratch.

“We broke the group into teams of twos. They prepared Johnny cake biscuits, chocolate cake – my favourite recipe by the way – Italian focaccia and cheesy corn bread,” said Chef Hall.

The competitive group of fathers battled it for prizes donated by event partners such as Kalik, Field Day, Chef’s Pantry, Bahama Hand Prints, Bahamia, Luxury Management, Munroe Global, Bee in the Bahamas and Island Foodology.

Among the participating dads were Ambassador of Cultural Affairs and Celebrity Artist Jamaal Rolle; comedian Tamico Sawyer; radio talk show host Juan McCartney; Myles Munroe Jr, Sherice ‘Shesomajor’ Major, the co-owner of Down Home Bahamas; Keva Carey and others.

The class was hosted by Chef Hall, Chef Quentin Scott and apprentice Chef Derek Sawyer.

Last month, The Kitchen at Baha Mar and Chef Hall, launched the very first culinary master class for moms. With Father’s Day following, hosting a class for dads was the natural thing to do.

While Chef Hall said he enjoys sharing his expertise in the kitchen, his goal is do much more than that with the events and initiatives he continues to spearhead.

“We all know that crab n’ rice in the Bahamas is the national gift for fathers. I had to change that.”

“I want locals, visitors and Corporate Bahamas to see how awesome Bahamian food and chefs are. We deserve to be in elevated spaces. I want to provide an outlet for small and large businesses to show their products to the Bahamian foodie public,” he said.

“I wish to see Bahamian restaurants on a global scale. In Europe, the United States, Asia and the

world over. I believe just as the world knows jerk, they should know Bahamian stew; just as they know croissants, they should know Johnny cake.”

As for a more personal goal, Chef Hall said he love to have “a namesake restaurant in a major resort; an amazing restaurant that not just looks like a modern Bahamian restaurant but has food that tells our story in a creative way.”

Veteran public servant leads the way digitally; joins international body of chiefs of staff

J

udy Simmons has spent the last three decades of her career working to improve the public service, and now her efforts have been recognised by a prominent international organisation of leaders.

She is the first Bahamian to be recruited to the Chief of Staff Association – a professional body for chiefs of staff in leading private corporations, governments, non-profits and the military.

The association was conceived by a small group of influential business leaders and diplomats who came together with a shared goal of finding better ways of overcoming traditional impediments to solving complex coordination problems and accelerating economic diplomacy.

Judy explained that she was recruited by the organisation based on her resume and leadership qualifications. She was then asked to complete a lengthy application detailing her capabilities and contributions, before being formally asked to join the association.

Currently, she is posted at the Ministry of Social Services and Urban Development as the Deputy Director of Ministry Administration and ITC where she provides administrative support to the Office of the Permanent Secretary.

However, she has served in many capacities during her tenure as a public servant.

Judy said some of her career highlights include digitising the Department of Social Service to make it easier for people to receive their benefits (something that proved vital during the COVID19 pandemic) and her work to regulate the cooperative sector in the country.

“During my career the one thing that I have always sought to do is to affect change that would better my country,” she said.

She sees her appointment as an acknowledgement not just for the the work she has already done, but also as an excellent way to extend her skill base for her future endeavours.

“Having served in leadership roles in both the public and private sectors over the past 36 years has influenced my decision to pursue leadership training. The years of exposure to enterprise administration have solidified my desire to pursue the leadership career path within my organisations,” she said.

“Membership in CSA is an opportunity to refine my leadership competencies and soft skills for future opportunities in leadership. I have a

JUDY Simmons passion for life-long learning and I see this as an excellent way to continue my professional climb, not just as a public servant, but also as a female seeking to reach that glass ceiling. I am ready for this experience to further refine my abilities.”

CSA membership provides experienced chiefs of staff with access to a powerful international network of influential leaders and a global community of peers.

Judy will now be able to benefit from three exclusive education programmes.

• The Situation Room – designed specifically to challenge seasoned chiefs of staff in role-play scenarios. Members work with experienced peers to apply skills in practice and under pressure.

•The CSA Leadership Series – brings to life insights from global leaders and chief of staff peers who have mastered the profession’s nuances through experience.

The CSA has also designed a a comprehensive education programme that builds competency, capability, and performance as well as professional certification for all their members. It focuses on four areas: skills, behaviors, experience and immersion.

Each year the programme selects two groups of cohorts to attend the course. Judy will be headed to England later this year as part of the first group of cohorts which will be held at the prestigious Oxford University.

“This experience will give me give me global exposure and the chance to interact with leaders from all different fields, not just the public sector. I feel that if someone is going to grow, they have to be given an opportunity to facilitate that growth and this is my opportunity for such growth,” she said.

Judy hopes that her success can inspire other young people to enter a career in the public sector. She said when she was in school, she did not have a high GPA and was not considered one of the students destined to succeed.

However, she refused to allow her start to determine her future.

Her advice to young people is to never focus on the odds which are stacked against them.

“I remember that Pastor Myles Munroe did a series on potential which really spoke to me and I used that to set a whole plan for my life, you can make a valuable contribution no matter who you are as long as long as you apply yourself.

She says that a public service career can have its moments of frustration such as when promotions and pay increments seem slow to come, but added that it is is also extremely rewarding,” she said.

“One of the highlights is that you are blazing trails to make letter better for Bahamians.”

And on another note, she is also using her technical background to assist Bahamian entrepreneurs with two different projects.

She wrote the programing framework to advance the development of the local SMEs which would allow them to outsource their business operations, which in turn allows them to focus on their products. The programme is called Jump the Line. She has also established Bahama Shops, which provides a legitimate marketplace for verified sellers and business owners.

Literary lives – Sir Paul McCartney

From ‘cute’ mop top to legendary songwriter – Part I Sir Christopher Ondaatje writes about the English singer, songwriter and musician who turns 80 tomorrow. He was the co-lead vocalist for The Beatles and is one of the most successful songwriters of all time.

– Paul McCartney James Paul McCartney was born on June 18, 1942 at Walton Hospital in the Walton area of Liverpool, England.

His mother Mary Patricia (née Mohin) had qualified to practice as a nurse. His father James McCartney was away working as a firefighter during World War II, and was not present when his son was born. McCartney’s parents came from very humble working class beginnings.

McCartney’s mother Mary was a midwife and the family’s main wage earner. She rode a bicycle to her patients – sometimes at night in deep snow.

His father played the trumpet and piano, and led Jim Mac’s Jazz Band in the 1920s. He encouraged young Paul to take piano lessons.

McCartney attended Stockton Road Primary School in Speke from 1947 to 1949 and then transferred to Joseph Williams Junior School in Belle Vale. In 1953, he passed an 11-Plus exam entitling him to go to Liverpool Institute – a grammar school where he met George Harrison who was a year younger than him. They became good friends.

On October 31, 1956 McCartney’s mother died of an embolism as a complication of surgery for breast cancer. He was fourteen years old. On his birthday, his father gave him a nickel-plated trumpet, but he traded it in for a £15 Framus Zenith acoustic guitar. Being left-handed, he found it difficult to play the instrument right-handed so he reversed the order of the strings. McCartney composed his first song “I Lost My Little Girl” on his Zenith guitar, and another tune that, many years later became “When I’m Sixty-Four”. “Long Tall Sally” was the first song McCartney performed in public at a Butlin’s Filey holiday camp talent competition.

On July 6, 1957, McCartney, who was fifteen, met John Lennon and his band The Quarrymen at the St Peter’s Church Fȇte in Woolton. They played a mixed blend of rock and roll and skiffle.

He was invited to join the band as a rhythm guitarist. George Harrison joined in 1958 as a lead guitarist, followed by Stuart Sutcliffe – a friend of Lennon, in 1960. By May that year, the band had tried several names, including Johnny and the Moondogs, Beatals, and The Silver Beetles.

In August 1960, just before drummer Pete Best joined the band, they settled on The Beatles as their band name.

In 1961, Stuart Sutcliffe left the band and McCartney reluctantly became their bass player.

They recorded professionally for the first time in Hamburg as the backing band for the English singer Tony Sheridan on the single “My Bonnie”.

This attracted the attention of Brian Epstein, who became their manager in January 1962.

Brian Epstein, born into a family of successful retailers in Liverpool, was to become important in the lives of The Beatles. In charge of the family’s music shop, he somehow acquired a talent for judging potential music makers. He was in some ways a visionary and he saw something in the rough jeans and leather jacket members of the band. He first met them on November 9, 1961 at the Cavern Club in Liverpool and, although he had absolutely no experience in music management, he put them under contract and insisted that they dispense with their scruffy appearance in favour of a new clean-cut image. He then convinced George Martin of EMI group to produce their records.

Within months, The Beatles were international stars. Epstein liked their music, their beat and

their sense of humour on stage, and their personal charm. He put them in matching dark suits, and gave them the same “mop” haircuts. They looked like nice polite children. Initially, Epstein received ten to fifteen percent of their earnings, which was changed to twenty-five percent of the group’s gross income. He packaged the group and accompanied them to America where the audience fell for the image. Epstein also advised the creation of Northern Songs, a publishing company that controlled the copyright of all Lennon-McCartney compositions recorded between 1963 and 1973.

It was a magical five years that ended in 1967 when Epstein died of a sedative overdose, ruled accidental, at the age of thirty-two.

Back in August 1962, Ringo Starr (real name Richard Starkey) had replaced Peter Best as the band’s drummer, which was the year The Beatles recorded “Love Me Do” ,which became their first hit in the United Kingdom in 1963, and in the US a year later.

Fan hysteria became known as “Beatlemania”, and many of The Beatles’ first hits were co-written

by Lennon and McCartney: “I Saw Her Standing There”, “She Loves You”, “I Want to Hold Your Hand” (1963) and “Can’t Buy Me Love”. A Hard, Day’s Night directed by Richard Lester, was a musical comedy film, produced in 1964 at the height of Beatlemania.

In August 1965, The Beatles released “Yesterday” with a string quartet backing – the first of the group’s recordings involving a single band member, and their first involving classical music.

“Yesterday” became one of the most covered songs in popular music history. McCartney, referred to as “the cute Beatle” began to supplant Lennon as the dominant Beatle in the group, and became the instrumentalist, songwriter, and musical arranger. “Rubber Soul” (1965) was considered to be the high point in the band’s music and lyrics.

– Paul McCartney Naturally, there developed some contention in the band – particularly between Lennon and McCartney.

In 1966, The Beatles released the album “Revolver” – an expanded repertoire of musical genres that involved innovative string arrangements and psychedelic rock. It was an artistic leap and McCartney’s creativity was easy for the other members of the band to follow. “Revolver” was the first of McCartney’s A-side records, the others being “Paperback Writer” and “Rain”.

The Beatles produced a short promotional film for the album – probably the forerunner of videos.

“Revolver” also included McCartney’s “Eleanor Rigby” which featured a string octet. Music critics praised “Eleanor Rigby” as “a neoclassical tour de force ... a true hybrid, conforming to no recognisable style or genre of song” except for some backing vocals.

– Paul McCartney The Beatles gave their final commercial concert at the end of their 1966 UStour. McCartney created his first independent musical project – a film score for the UK production The Family Way. It was a collaboration with George Martin who had arranged the strings back-up for “Eleanor Rigby”.

The film score won McCartney the Ivor Novello Award for Best Instrumental Theme.

Towards the end of the 1960s, McCartney realised that there was an uneasiness in the band, but urged them to maintain creative productivity.

He had a new project Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band – a fictional band, that became the album’s title track. It was an enormous success.

McCartney in 1966, drew some criticism although the visual style, humour and music were admired.

But by then relationships within the band were deteriorating. Tension grew when they made their eponymous double “White Album”, and worsened the following year during “Let It Be” sessions when a camera crew filmed proceedings. (A new, more positive light has been shed on this period in Peter Jackson’s three-part documentary “Get Back” on Disney +)

“We were fed up with being The Beatles. We hated ... the four little mop-top approach ...We were not boys we were men ... artists rather than just performers.”

“A Day in the Life” required a forty piece orchestra, and included “Strawberry Fields Forever” and the following LP had a cover of The Beatles in costume as the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band together with a host of celebrities.

Brian Epstein’s death on 27 August 1967 created a huge void. McCartney filled the gap and became their leader and business manager. His first act was to produce a film for television which became Magical Mystery Tour. The historian Mark Lewisohn stated that the project was a nightmare, released in the UK as a six-track double extended play disc, and an identical LP in the United States. Although the film was largely criticised the Capitol record compilation sound track achieved $8 million in sales within weeks of its release – the highest initial sales of any other Capitol LP. A disagreement between Lennon and McCartney compromised with one side of the album featuring individual songs, and a medley featured on the reverse.

John Lennon left The Beatles privately in September 1969, while McCartney had business disagreements concerning Allen Klein’s possible management of the group. McCartney announced his own departure from The Beatles on April 10, 1970. A suit was filed on December 31, 1970 for the band’s dissolution, and in March 1971 the court appointed a receiver to oversee the finances of The Beatles’ company Apple Corps.

An English court legally dissolved The Beatles’ partnership on January 9, 1975, although sporadic lawsuits against their record company EMI and Klein continued until 1989.

he last 48 hours have been of the upmost exciting for our good friend and foundling White Boy. If you all remember, he was found on Poinciana Drive on April 1 wearing a ridiculously large collar, trailing a rope behind him.

A lady, heading to work, called me.

She couldn’t stop but she cared enough to call and take photos of him and his location.

Thanks to her, we were able to send the Bahamas Humane Ambulance and pick him up. He was in terrible condition.

We naturally do not know his story, but it was grim, and he was close to death. Infection was rampant in his body. Strangely enough, he was not emaciated, so that meant that he had access to food, but they (whoever “they” were), were not caring for his wounds. Why? He had live maggots living on one side of his face, and terrible bite wounds (down to the bone) on his legs.

He had both ears cut or torn almost completely off and had trouble walking, plus an extreme infection raging through his system.

The lady who called me was the first of many people who were part of the chain that saved this sweet boy’s life.

His first days he kept his head down, his tail remained still, and he didn’t want to eat. His vet, Dr Martyna, had her hands full with all the care he required.

She nursed him, and her assistants at the shelter all provided love and care. I visited him almost daily and asked other animal loving persons to do the same.

Normally, very sick animals need fostering in order to improve. The need for love and community is essential, however, there were no more fosters available and some people are very nervous about a pit bull. Cut a

long story short, Dr Martyna and I figured it could be done at the shelter with a little outside help… and it was.

Gradually, day by day, White Boy improved. He had a following on my Facebook page. When I got COVID (or travelled), others stepped up and went to see him. At first, they would just sit on a towel on the grass and keep him company, talk to him and stroke him where there were no wounds.

After a few days he lifted his head up, and then a couple of days after that his tail started to wag. And that grateful little tail has never stopped wagging.

Thunder is one of many puppies available for adoption at the BHS and one of many dogs and puppies available at a reduced rate during the Summer Adoption Drive. Do you need a smart, loyal protector to round out your family? Thunder might just fit the bill. He’s about four months old and ready for a home of his ous and slow. As he got better so did his energy levels. He loved going for walks and waited with anticipation for his visits. The love, care and medical attention he received at the shelter brought him back from the brink of death.

Watching White Boy improve was rather like watching a caterpillar… finally we found that we had this absolutely charming and beautiful 18-month-old white as snow male pittie who had a gentle nature.

When he was strong enough, he was neutered and sailed through that procedure. Gradually, all the bandages came off, and his face heeled.

He basically has no ears. Did the

We will never know the answers to any of these questions alas.

We do know that he is a beautiful dog and probably cost somebody quite a lot of money. Why would you not care for something that you paid a considerable sum for? All this will remain a mystery, but it happens far too frequently in the Bahamas.

White Boy’s plight caught the attention of the New York Bully Crew who specialises in finding homes for abused and neglected pit bulls. One of our board reached out to them. They said that they would take him and find him the best of homes.

WHITE Yesterday, White Boy boarded a priBoy and vate jet as the guest of some wonderhis travel fully kind people and flew up to New companion York on a Challenger 300 to be handed Marlena over to the wonderful folks at the New Leonard York Bully Crew.

He behaved like a seasoned traveller on the plane, settled down and slept, as if he had been doing it forever.

He is now settling into his temporary home while he is assessed in order to choose which of the many families who want to give him a home are the right fit.

Me? I shed quite a few tears as he boarded that aircraft and watched it take off, but I know that this boy has a great life ahead of him. My loss is most definitely his gain. He will make a wonderful family member for somebody.

RAND BAHAMA – On May 14, members of Grand Bahama Island Birders (GBIB) participated in Global Big Day, an annual celebration of the birds around us. Last year, Global Big Day brought birders together virtually from more countries than ever before. More than 51,000 people from 192 countries submitted 134,000 checklists with eBird, setting four new world records for a single day of birding.

When GBIB participated in Global Big Day in 2021, 82 species were found. GBIB covered Freeport, West Grand Bahama and East Grand Bahama. The total number of checklists was 26.

This year, 90 species were reported. GBIB watched the same areas as 2021 but added New Providence. David Dean was the team member in Nassau. The total number of checklists was 34.

GBIB participated in the BirdsCaribbean fundraising campaign to assist Caribbean nationals with travel expenses to attend their joint conference with the American Ornithological Society in San Juan, Puerto Rico, June 27 - July 2. A total of $1,380 was raised for this campaign.

World Migratory Bird Day (aka Global Big Day) highlights the importance of conserving and restoring the ecological connectivity and integrity of ecosystems that support the natural movements of migratory birds and that are essential for their survival and well-being.

Light pollution and its impact on migratory birds was the main focus of 2022 global campaign that aims to raise awareness of migratory birds and the need for international cooperation to conserve them.
