Each mind, personality and spirit that I connect with is a destiny waiting to unfold, a purpose waiting to be fulfilled and light just beginning to shine. I have never wavered from the idea that each child was placed in my path for a reason. We’ll be happy to welcome you and a fellow hero!” “Now,” he paused, “there is something you should know.” “What’s that?” they asked. “Ummm, he got caught in enemy fire and lost an arm, a leg and one of his eyes. He doesn’t really have anyone else to take care of him, and we became really close. I’d like you to take him in and treat him like a son, like you would treat me.” He waited to hear their response. His father spoke first. “I’m sorry to hear about your friend. Let’s put our heads together and find him somewhere to live.” “No,” the soldier insisted,” I want him to live with us…like family!” His mother spoke up: “Honey, you don’t know what you’re asking of us…of me. I’m a stay-at-home wife. Can
you imagine the burden on me? I have a routine, and I like the life your father has provided.” His father joined in: “Someone with those issues would interrupt our lives terribly. Why don’t you just come home by yourself? Find out where he ends up living and we will send him some money or something. Just come home on your own. Your friend is a soldier, he’ll be fine on his own.” The son quietly hung up the phone. His parents waited days, then weeks, then months, but never got another call. Questions to consider: 1. Do you think the son was really talking about a friend? 2. Were the parents right or wrong in their reasoning? 3. Why do you think the parents never received another call? Anglican priest laid to rest in grand style OPERATIONS at the Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turk and Caicos Islands paused last Saturday, as Anglicans assembled at the Parish Church of St Gregory the Great on Carmichael Road to lay to rest a beloved senior clergyman. Throngs of Anglicans filled the St Gregory to celebrate the life and legacy of Rev Father Addison Abedlon Turnquest, who served throughout the archipelagic Diocese. Father Turnquest was born in the quaint settlement of Deadman’s Cay, Long Island. As is custom, most young boys and girls on the island grow up steeped in the Anglican tradition. His love for the Anglican Church was nurtured and blossomed as he served around the altar and assisting various priests posted to Long Island. Opportunities for advancement and growth were very limited during the early 1960s so he left his home for greater advancement and career growth. Father Addy, as he was affectionately called by many of his beloved parishioners, joined the rank and file of the Royal Bahamas Police Force, where which he exemplary service. He resigned from the RBPF after attaining the rank of lance-sergeant, number 392. Upon REV FATHER his resignation from the police ADDISON force, God called him to test his TURNQUEST vocation for the sacred ministry (priesthood) at Salisbury Theological College in Salisbury, England. Friend and family said that even as a child, he always felt a calling on his life to a higher and more divine purpose. This calling was fulfilled on January 16, 1972, when he was ordained as a priest in Christ Church Cathedral. He would make history by being the first Bahamian cleric to be ordained by the first Bahamian Prelate, Bishop Michael Hartley Eldon. From his ordination, Father Addy was a revisionist and progressive thinker. He hit the ground running with his larger- dedicated to the growth, development and expansion of the Anglican Church than-life personality. He was also civic-minded in his clerical duties and served his country as a chaplain for the Royal Bahamas Defense Force, the Sandilands Hospital and the Geriatric Hospital. During the eucharistic requiem mass, Diocesan Bishop Laish Boyd reminded the congregation that the Anglican Church is bereft of the presence and assistance of Father Addy, who served the Church in many capacities, using the gifts of his time, talents and treasures well. He said the deceased loved his God, his Church and his family in an. His wife Shirley of some 50 years will mourn along with his three children who honoured and revered their father’s legacy; they all attended the Anglican high school of St John’s, and all graduated with high honours. Father Shazzabazzar is also credited with building the first solar-powered car for the Caribbean and Latin American territories. Father Addy is also survived by two grandsons, Aaron and Benjamin Turnquest.

If God called, what would you say? BY ALESHA CADET | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER | ACADET@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET THE simple of act of picking up the phone and talking to friend, family member or partner, can be sufficient to turn a bad day into a good one. But what if you had a direct phone line to God Himself. What would talk to Him about? If anything, what would you ask for? We asked our readers what they would say to God with they could speak to Him directly. Micheal Stubbs said he would thank God for taking his call, before letting Him know how much he appreciates how far he has came in life. “I’d thank Him for the great health of myself, my wife and kids; thank Him for our future ahead of us. I would ask for his guidance in moving forward with than plans He has planted in my life,” said Micheal. Like Micheal, Janesta Simms said she wouldn’t ask for anything at all. Instead, she would thank God for everything in her life. “It’s not like I don’t do this all the time, but over the phone especially, I would thank Him and also ask him how He is doing. I will let Him know how He has already given me more then I deserve so I’d want to know what I can do in return,” she said “Why do we have to ask God for something every time? I am going to ask Him what He wants from me. He always thinks about me, for 32 years of my life
he has chosen me and kept me in His arms, I don’t need anything more. I’m honoured to even be on the line so again, I’d thank God for saving me countless times when I couldn’t save myself.” For Maria Forbes, the scripture that comes to mind is Psalm 145:18-19: “The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth. He fulfils the desire of those who fear Him; He also hears their cry and saves them.” Maria said she doesn’t need a direct line, as she considers prayer her access to God, but if she was given the opportunity to hear His voice and speak with God via phone, she would ask for a space in heaven when it’s her time. “I would ask Him for everyone to understand the meaning of love. You know, the kind He asks us to have for ourselves and our neighbours. I’d ask to be healed of all my traumas and heartaches. I would ask Him what more can I do to serve Him and walk in my purpose on this earth,” said Maria. Glenda Bastian said she would thank Him and ask God for peace in every aspect of her life; a peace of mind, spiritual growth, discipline, mental stability and favour. “All my family members that I have lost, I would ask Him how they are doing. While still here on earth, I’d ask Him for more of all the great things money cannot buy,” said Glenda.

New book uses Bible scriptures to tackle bullying

MINISTER KEITH EVANS
BY JEFFARAH GIBSON | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER | JGIBSON@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET BULLYING, which continues to negatively impact the lives of many young people, especially in cyber space and even in the church environment, has caught the attention of a local minister who decided to tackle the issue from a spiritual perspective. Minister Keith Evans, a licenced minister of the gospel with the Bahamas District Churches of the Nazarene, recently published his new book, “The Big Bad Bully in Me”. The book is geared towards young readers. “I felt that the Lord had impressed upon my heart to share my experience of being a victim of bullying growing up, and to help many…who are victims of abuse. However, the emphasis is on identifying the root cause to bullying, and

helping the bully to deal with it,” he told Tribune Religion. He said he has observed that the majority of literature on bullying or anti-bullying is focused on the victims of bullying. Only few books and articles, he said, are dedicated to exploring the bully. However, he hopes his book can offer a new perspective and help those who bully others to understand how they should conduct themselves. “The title of this book is to garner the attention of the perpetrators as well,” he said.
“One of the themes…we highlighted in the book is about church bullying. Believe it or not, but bullying is very much a reality within the church itself. We also highlighted and delved into the suicide dilemma among teens. Suicidal ideation and how to combat this conundrum that is prevalent in Canada and the US. ‘The Big Bad Bully In Me’ is a book that has an international flavour to it, in that I’ve extrapolated information from parts of the world dealing with this poignant message.” Minister Evans said there can never be
enough awareness surrounding the problem of bullying. It is an issue, he added, that is silently killing many young people today. “It is a morass that needs to be dealt with. How many children and adults go about their daily lives being victims of bullying? I’ve also seen some instances of cyber-bullying, subliminally insinuating suggestive messages to injure the intended victims. It has to stop, and I do believe that this book is more than a book. It is indubitably a ministry with a message,” he said. Minister Evans hopes his book can play even a small role in curtailing bullying among Bahamian youth. The book includes many scriptural references, which Minister Evans feels are relative to the topic of bullying. “We simply want to end physical, verbal, social, cyber, and any type of bullying, if possible. In fact, every school in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas should have this material in their libraries for the kids to read. It will be a blessing indeed, and a life-changing experience in understanding the mind of the bully,” he said. Minister Evans has been in ministry for many years, with a special focus on youth ministry. He is the youth minister for the Solid Rock Church of the Nazarene under the leadership of Rev Leslie and Wilhelmina Phillips. As a youth minister, he has organised events such as basketball jamborees, conferences, and anti-bullying programmes. He also hosts a radio show in Freeport on Dove 103.7FR, and a social media ministry called “The Wake Up Everybody”. He is married to Monét Evans. “The Big Bad Bully in Me” is Minister Evans’ second published book. He is presently pursuing an Associate’s degree in Theology.
