Today, like many other days brings special thoughts of you of happy times we shared and caring things you used to do And once more, it's a reminder that life's road is sometimes rough because the time we shared just wasn't long enough For you were someone special

Who was thought so highly of Who'll always be remembered with affection, warmth and love So sending thoughts to heaven on the day you went away and hope you know you're missed More than words could ever say.

From your children and grandchildren.

US GOSPEL NETWORK LAUNCHES BAHAMAS CHAPTER BY ALESHA CADET | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER | ACADET@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET A NEW American gospel music network has officially launched its Bahamian chapter. The Gospel Industry Network (GIN) is an organisation designed to cultivate the mastery, appreciation and advancement of the contribution of gospel music and the arts to the industry. GIN also seeks to strengthen the works of churches, ministry practitioners, owners of Christian businesses, artists, producers and executives through various platforms. Led by Bishop Kenneth Wells of the Spirit of the Love Church in San Bernadino, California, the network has more than 50 chapters in all major cities of the US. The Bahamas became its latest chapter on Saturday, May 29 via a virtual induction ceremony at the Gospel Music and Entertainment Summit (GMES) at the First Baptist on Market Street. President of the Bahamas Chapter Rev Clinton L Minnis, who is also the president of the Anoo Association and an GMES organizer, said he first met Bishop Wells in 2018 when he was invited to a gospel industry meeting in Hollywood, Florida. During that meeting, Rev Clinton said the initial request was made to him to consider the Bahamas as a strategic interest market. “The Anoo Association is a Bahamian non-profit…for civic and cultural development. Through our research, we realised that to be taken seriously, a substantive and sustainable environment was (desperately needed) to bring the organisation structure and to position stakeholders for success,” he said. The association decided to abandon the ad hoc, individualistic or single event focus in favour of a more corporate and socially responsible approach. “As a result, a research-based platform, the Gospel Music and Entertainment Summit (GMES) was established to facilitate our goals since we envisioned

opportunities for new gospel industry initiatives, projects and presentations to be launched. Therefore, as our research documents, songs, books and music videos were set to be celebrated, the timing was right for the Gospel Industry Network, Bahamas Chapter to be advanced,” said Rev Clinton. Alongside Rev Clinton, Bahamas Chapter leaders include Minister Glen Johnson, vice president of Music Production and Worship; Derek Stubbs, vice president of Industry Relations; Orlando ‘Landlord’ Miller, vice president of Global Media Promotions; Dr Renae Symonette secretary; Rev Deno Cartwright, financial expert; Prophetess Nadia Rigby, chaplain; Patricia Darling,

recording secretary, and Ethan Corey “DJ Counsellor” Rolle, the sergeant at arms. “We anticipate travelling to the Gospel Industry Network Summit in Chicago during August of 2021 for exposure to this parent organisation as a fledging chapter. Moreover, as we have discussed and received positive response from the Ministry of Tourism’s group representative, Mrs Ingrid Bartlett, our religious tourism focus will be front and centre for hosting an industry retreat during the Fall and Winter period. This will position our local chapter to mobilise our resources and networks for a strategic coming together to do our Lord’s business,” said Rev Clinton.

THE Men’s Department of the Bahamas National Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention is taking their popular and much-needed breakfast giveaway to the Providence Baptist Church on Saturday, June 26. Earlier this year, they teamed up for this initiative, which is geared towards helping those in need throughout New Providence, with the Women’s Department of Mount Calvary Baptist Cathedral on Baillou Hill Road and on the Sarah Butler Park on Meadow Street. They also partnered with Leah Hopes and Dreams Bahama, a non-profit organisation headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. Francina Beneby, who heads the Bahamas chapter, said the idea for this outreach project came to her in vision from God after she got sick with Bell’s palsy on March 17. After making a few calls, who got a few friends to assist her, they had their official launch on May 1 at Baha Mar, which was also attended by members of the international chapter came. They also had a giveaway of a number of items in the Bain and Grants Town community, so it was a natural fit to return to the same location for the breakfast giveaway. Ms Beneby said when the Baptist Men showed up bringing grits, tuna, corned beef, sausages and water, they gladly accepted the gesture.

Adrian Archer appointed to world-wide music commission – First Bahamian to serve in this position – THE Archbishop of the West Indies, the Most Reverend Howard Gregory, through the provincial secretariat, has announced the selection of Bahamian Adrian A W Archer, pictured, Director of Music at Christ Church Cathedral, New Providence, as a provincial representative on the commission to plan the music and liturgy for the upcoming Lambeth Conference to be held in Canterbury, England in 2022. In a statement issued from the Diocesan Office, Bishop of the Diocese Laish Boyd congratulated Mr Archer, the first Bahamian to serve on this prestigious planning commission. “We are proud to be represented at this Anglican Communion-wide table. We congratulate our brother, Adrian, as we know that he will make a meaningful contribution. This is a wonderful opportunity for Church in the Province of the West Indies (CPWI) to make a difference and certainly for the Diocese to be showcased,” he said. The Lambeth Conference usually takes place every ten years for active bishops in the Anglican Communion and hosts as many as 1,000 bishops with many spouses, hundreds of adjunct and support staff over multiple weeks of prayer, reflection, fellowship and dialogue on church and world affairs. With the theme of “God’s Church for God’s World - Walking, listening and witnessing together”, the conference will explore what it means for the Anglican Communion to be responsive to the needs of a 21st century world. The music for the conference is being overseen by Felix Yeung, who is Director of Music at St John’s Cathedral and Provincial Music Director of Music of the Anglican Church in Hong Kong. His team will come from all over the

Anglican Communion and begin planning in August of this year. In addition to his responsibilities at Christ Church, Mr Archer is the founding conductor of the Highgrove Singers, musical director for Shakespeare In Paradise, music adjudicator for the E Clement Bethel National Arts Festival 2021, founder of the Bahamas Choral Institute and vice chairman for the Dundas Centre for the Performing Arts. He hosts the radio show “Sacred Sounds”, which airs on HITS 106.5 FM on Sunday’s at noon which explores the varied genres of music in the sacred world.

Inaugural Bahamas Gospel Music Awards take place this Sunday BY JEFFARAH GIBSON | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER | JGIBSON@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET

T

HE gospel community is buzzing in anticipation of the inaugural Bahamas Gospel Music Awards (BGMA) to be held this weekend. It’s an awards show, founder Travis Edgecombe said, that the local gospel community can finally call its own. The awards ceremony will be streamed live on Facebook, on the Elev8tion Now page, and on YouTube at 6pm. The event will be hosted by comedian Jaquay Adderley, in character as “Bertrum Oh Bubbler”, and Jillian Gray, and will feature several live performances. And as the clock counts down to the premiere, Travis said the pressure to have seamless presentation is mounting. “I am definitely feeling the pressure, but I ask God to give me the grace to handle it,” he told Tribune Religion. Even if it’s not flawless, if there are some small mistakes, Travis said it is important for the local gospel community to host this awards show. For too long, Bahamian gospel artists have not been given the recognition fitting the magnitude of their Christian service through music ministry, he added. The BGMAs highlight Bahamian gospel artists throughout the islands and representing various genres of music. “I am looking forward to the performances, winner reactions, our virtual audience and our guests who will be receiving special recognition,” said Travis. Performing live on Sunday will be Christopher Roberts, Cara T. Newton, V-Mac, Gabrielle Styles, Ann Calixte, Kelda ‘Timeless’ Sweeting, IAmStacs, Joinae Gibson, Akeem Gardiner, Terez Davis-Nixon and others. The Lifetime Achievement recipient is the popular ensemble Pastor

Clint Watson and Shaback, and the Trailblazer Award recipient Najie Dun. Special recognition will also be given to Mark Cartwright, Kristoff Rolle and Stefphen Sands for their contributions to the gospel industry. According to Travis, the awards show started as a way to provide a haven for musicians, and he is looking forward to presenting those deserving with their flowers while they are still around to enjoy them. “A lot of our special moments, legends and reunions are not being documented. My prayer is that this award show will bring the gospel community together

and take Bahamian gospel music to the world,” he said. Lovers of gospel music are invited to tune into the event and engage. “It’s a celebration. The Body of Christ coming together to celebrate each other while glorifying Christ is a powerful thing,” said Travis. “Who wouldn’t want to tune in to that?”

congratulated Ms Beneby and her 12-member team on the work they were doing. “We’re doing the same thing with the Baptist Men, going into the community and providing breakfast every month,” he said. “So because we have an abundance of food to give away at Mount Calvary, we decided to come and share with Leah Hopes and Dreams in the park,” he said.

Ms Beneby gave thanks to God for the joint venture, because, as she pointed out, they had an opportunity to provide a hot meal to more people than they originally had anticipated thanks to the support of the Baptist Men, whose evangelist chairman, Walter Pratt, Jr provided a motivational thought for the residents before prayers were offered to all in attendance. Hopes and Dreams will be in the Carmichael Road area before they travel to Exuma in August to begin their Family Island drive. The Baptist Men are also preparing to host a “Half-Time” revival service from June 14-16 at 7pm nightly at the Hillside Missionary Baptist Church where the Rev Stephen Duncombe, Pastor Deno Cartwright and Pastor Cranston Evans will be speaking.
