RELIGIOUS NEWS, STORIES AND CHURCH EVENTS

The onus of expectation – Your part and God’s part

S

O far, it seems the stories we have referenced from 2 Kings 4 follow a particular pattern: An issue arises for someone. Spiritual advice is gained. Rescue or an answer ensues. But what about those of us who don’t experience immediate respite or resolve? Or, even worse, what about those of us who have grasped the proverbial brass ring – we have tasted of the promises of God, only to have that same promise wrested from our grasp? What happens to those of us who must endure in the process and fulfilment of expectation? Honestly, I don’t have a cliché for your situation or a “20-day, 30-day, mark it on your calendar” declaration that will appease the situation. I have been in the same place and there are only three things I have found that help us to endure expectation’s complete process: 1. Personal word – the word that we hide in our hearts through study and meditation 2. Personal worship – the psalms, hymns and spiritual songs we use to make melody in our hearts 3. Personal witness – our obedience to evangelism, God’s kingdom agenda I will never negate the important role that church membership plays in our lives, but the lesson I learned in 2020 remains above all. I, along with many others, stood only on the scriptures I had personally studied, the worship I had in my living room and the witness that was made through counselling and ministering to others in evangelism. I have found these three to be undeniable keys to enduring the process of expectation. In addition to these powerful keys, another realisation that keeps me is even after expectation is waited upon and endured,

BY AYANNA CLARKE

What happens to those of us who must endure in the process and fulfilment of expectation? the responsibility to fulfil is not on me. Ever since I started this series, my expectations have been, in a word… tested! To no end I have had to ask: What now? How will I get through this? Where do I go from here? I realised that all the questions I had been asking had been laid at the feet of the same source. I had cast them before God in prayer. This led me to an amazing confirmation – the responsibility of expectation is not mine, it’s the Lord’s!

Let’s recap a portion of the part we play in expectation: 1. We must stand in a posture of projection 2. We must shift our paradigm and see things in a new way 3. We must participate in our own deliverance 4. We must be able to see beyond ourselves and broaden our scope to a kingdom perspective Once we stand firmly upon these pillars,

I truly believe the onus is not on us to meet the expectation, but on God the Father, the divine source. No matter what things look like, God is infallible and cannot lie. His promises are yes and amen – leaving me thoroughly convinced that the responsibility to fulfil what we expect in Him is on Him! Look closely at our friend the Shunnemite woman. She experienced expectation only to have a test of perhaps the utmost strength in endurance when her son fell ill and died. But consider carefully that she did not seek to find her own remedy. She didn’t bother to get the opinion of those around her. She immediately went to the source. She knew one thing – she had gotten a word from God. Her unspoken expectation for a son had been met by the hand of God (when she was simply looking out for the needs of the man of God) and it was from this same source that she sought ultimate remedy. I would never say we should not get help or inquire assistance of anyone! I would never suggest that we not use every godly weapon in our arsenal to obtain our expectation by godly means. But I will declare, without fear of repercussion, that God is accountable to His Word – which holds all His promises. Once we do our part to fulfil the requirements of expectation, I truly believe He is accountable, responsible and the onus placed on Him, to move on our behalf and fulfil it. God bless you this week!

MEDITATION - WORSHIP

RELIGION

To worship in truth is to know what we believe in order to be committed.

BY ANGELA C BOSFIELD PALACIOUS

THE Anglican Church Women (ACW) conference a few days ago had as its theme “Recharging our Desire to Worship God in Spirit and in Truth”. Let us consider some important elements for reflection. 1. Recharging: When we have a phone, battery drill, razor or anything else that needs to be recharged, we have to plug it in to the electrical outlet, or in the case of a car battery we connect it to another battery, in to order to use it again. The power comes from outside of the thing itself. 2. Recharging our desire: We all know that we have a wide variety of desires. What do you crave? For some it is food, love, sex, a vacation, drugs, chocolate, ice cream, shopping and any number of other things. What lingers on your mind that could be classified as an obsession, addiction, fixation, preoccupation, daydreams, or fantasy? Is your passion for these things greater than your love for the Lord? 3. Recharging our desire to worship God: This presupposes that that there was a desire in the first place. With what level did you begin? Were you a pilot light, a medium flame or a roaring fire ablaze with love and gratitude for God’s saving grace? These questions are for ladies: • Have you had a Mary Magdalene moment with the Lord in the resurrection garden? • Have you had an “alabaster box” moment of forgiveness and grateful devotion? • Have you had a “bent double”

THE TRIBUNE

moment when your life straightened out and burden lifted? • Have you had a moment of self-revelation like the woman at the well? • Have you had your child healed or raised from a death-like situation? • Have you stood at the foot of the cross counting the cost of your salvation? • Have you touched the hem of the Lord’s garment in prayer and was healed? Gentlemen, these are for you: • Have you had your call to leave what you are doing and follow Jesus? • Have you had a change of lifestyle and attitude like Zaccheus or Matthew? • Has Jesus answered your prayer like that of the centurion for someone to be healed? • Have you seen Jesus multiply resources for you as in the story of the feeding of 5,000 people? • Has God enabled you to speak to a crowd of people as Peter experienced? • Have you had a dream that could only have come from God as Joseph had happen to him? • Have you come out of a hot situation as did the Hebrew men in the fiery furnace? We all may identify with these fourteen examples of encounters with Jesus Christ. If you have not personally but know it to be true for a relative, friend, colleague, neighbour or an acquaintance

that a miracle happened, then surely this should charge or re-charge your desire to worship God. This should kindle or re-kindle the flame of your love for the Lord. We have the power from on high in the person of the Holy Spirit to help us to make up our minds to desire to recharge our desire to worship. We are able to: • Enjoy the presence of the Lord, acknowledging that God is always with us • Admit that we are prone to sin and we need the saving grace of God to help us • Pray to avoid succumbing to temptations and to being delayed by distractions and give our undivided attention to God. 4. Worshipping in Spirit and in Truth: This may mean different things to us but we can agree that we need the Holy Spirit to enable us to do this. These are just some of the ways that people describe what worshipping in the Spirit means to them: • Asking the Holy Spirit to worship in you and through you • Entering the throne room of the heaven lies in praise • Feeling an anointing coming over you • Becoming totally unaware of our surroundings • Kneeling in complete submission to God

• Closing our eyes, raising our hands in prayer and praise • Lying prostrate on the floor with complete abandon • Lost in wonder, love and praise • Without feeling anything other than a peace in the silence and stillness To worship in the spirit is to be sincere, not giving lip service to God, but with hearts committed to engage in a meaningful relationship with our creator, redeemer and sanctifier. To worship in truth is to know what we believe in order to be committed. Who is the God of our worship? What does Scripture say about who God is? What does our Church tradition teach? How do we integrate what we study and learn, and what we experience? The Bible is the best place to begin, while the creeds reveal how the Church over the ages has come to understand the tip of the iceberg of who our great God is. We have to discern what is heresy and what is truth wherever we go, what we read and that to which we listen. May God bless you as you recharge your desire to “worship God in spirit and in truth.” •Rev Angela Palacious, a motivational speaker and author of several devotional books, is an Anglican priest. DISCOVERING BIBLE STUDY LATER IN LIFE BY ALESHA CADET | TRIBUNE FEATURES WRITER | ACADET@TRIBUNEMEDIA.NET

GROWING up in a Christian home for many Bahamians means either being enrolled in Bible study classes at the family’s church, attending Sunday school, and/or being taught the scriptures by their parents. As adults, many admit to falling short when it comes to keeping up with their studies of the holy text. Others concede that even though they were raised in the faith, they never really paid that much attention to the Bible and its teachings. Tribune Religion spoke to several Christian readers who spoke about their experiences of being drawn back to reading and truly studying the Bible in later years. “It’s not that I do not know of the Word and the Bible’s teaching; I know. But I wanted to learn more. And for the first time in my life when I found myself learning how to study the Bible, how to pray and how to build relationships with people; it was life-changing for me,” said Melissa Kemp. “I sat there learning... as I read the Bible, I realised my heart may have been drawn to the wrong things in life and it was about time I changed that.” Meanwhile, Wanda Forbes she found herself reading the Bible for the first time in her mid-thirties. After discovering so more about the true nature of Jesus,

his deeds, his significance, she said she wishes she had started studying the Bible years ago. “Learning a lesson the first time is always good. As humans we beat ourselves up for things that we should be at peace with, and you will learn this in the

pages of the Bible. When we slip up, God gives us more grace; it is in the Bible. It brings about a great feeling to read and pursue each chapter, but not only reading them, for me it is reading to understand. If I have to read a chapter three times to understand, I will,” said Wanda. Brandon Moss said it was through his children that he really delved deeper in Bible for the first time. “They attend a Christian school, so they know what they are talking about, and I am always so amazed. This is the environment I wanted for them. I want them to grow up knowing that they are not only covered by their parents, but they are also covered in this life by the Almighty God, all of us are,” he said. According to the web.mst.edu website, in a Bible resource written by Ross Haselhorst, it is very common for people who decide to read the Bible for the first time to do the logical thing: start at the beginning and read to the end, just like they would read most other books. However, reading the Bible this way usually results in the following: people have no problem reading through the first two books, Genesis and Exodus, but by the time they reach Leviticus and Numbers, most get bogged down in the seemingly pointless details of genealogies, instructions and rules concerning just about

Is magic immoral? It played a role in the development of early Christianity By SHAILY SHASHIKANT PATEL Assistant Professor of Early Christianity, Virginia Tech (THE CONVERSATION) – People are fascinated by magic. TV shows like “WandaVision” and “The Witcher”, books like the “Harry Potter” series, plus comics, movies and games about people with powers that can’t be explained by God, science or technology, have all been wildly popular for years. Modern pop culture is a testament to

how enchanted people are by the thought of gaining special control over an uncertain world. “Magic” is often defined in the West as evil or separate from “civilised” religions like Christianity and also from the scientific observation and study of the world. But the irony is that magic was integral to the development of Christianity and other religions – and it informed the evolution of the sciences, too. As an expert in ancient magic and

everything. At this point, many people give up, feeling that the scriptures are just not relevant to their lives. But this is not the way to read the Bible, said Mr Haselhorst. “For first-time readers of the Bible I would recommend starting with Luke, then Acts, Genesis, Exodus, John, begin Psalms (a few each time you read several chapters in another book) and Proverbs (one chapter each time you read several chapters in another book); Deuteronomy, and Romans. After reading the above, a person has a reasonable grasp of what the Bible is about. However, hopefully a person will go on to Isaiah, Mark, Ecclesiastes, Hebrews, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, Ephesians, Job, Philippians, First and Second Samuel, the Gospel according to Matthew, Colossians, First and Second Kings, First and Second Corinthians, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Galatians, Song of Solomon, First and Second Thessalonians, Jeremiah, First and Second Timothy, Lamentations, Daniel, James, the rest of the New Testament, and the rest of the Old Testament,” he said. The author noted a good alternative approach is to read the entire New Testament and then the Old Testament, skipping past the parts that are too detailed. early Christianity, I study how magic helped early adherents develop a Christian identity. One part of this identity was morality: the inner sense of right and wrong that guides life decisions. Of course, the darker side of this development is the slide into supremacy: seeing one’s own tradition as morally superior and rightfully dominant. My work tries to return magic to its proper place as a part of the Christian tradition. I show how false distinctions between magic and Christianity were created to elevate ancient Christianity and how they continue to advance Christian supremacy today. The origins of magic

In Western culture, magic is often defined in opposition to religion and science. This is problematic because all three concepts are rooted in colonialism. For centuries, many European scholars based their definitions of religion on Christianity, while at the same time describing the practices and beliefs of

Is magic immoral? It played a role in the development of early Christianity

FROM PAGE 38 non-Christians as “primitive”, “superstitious” or “magical.” This sense of superiority helped Europe’s Christian monarchies justify conquering and exploiting Indigenous peoples around the world in a bid to “civilise” them, often through extreme brutality. Imperialist legacies still color how some people think about non-Christians as “others”, and how they label others’ rituals and religions as “magic.” But this modern understanding of magic doesn’t map neatly onto the world of the first Christians. “Magic” has always had many meanings. From what scholars can gather, the word itself was imported from the Persian word “maguš”, which may have described a class of priests with royal connections. Sometimes, these “magi” were depicted as performing divination, ritual activities or educating young boys who would take the throne. Greek texts retained this earlier meaning and also added new ones. The famous ancient Greek historian Herodotus writes that the Persian magi interpreted dreams, read the skies and performed sacrifices. Herodotus uses the Greek word “magos”. Sophocles, a Greek playwright, uses the same term in his tragedy “Oedipus the King”, when Oedipus berates the seer Tiresias for scheming to overthrow him. Although these two Greek texts both date from roughly the early 400s BC, “magician” has different connotations in each. Starting in the first century BC, Latin authors also adapted the Persian term into “magus”. While defending himself at trial for performing “evil deeds of magic”, the second-century philosopher Apuleius claimed he both was and was not a “magician”. He insisted he was like a high priest or a natural philosopher rather than someone who uses unsavory means to get what they want. What’s interesting here is that Apuleius uses one idea of high philosophical magic to combat another idea of crude, self-interested magic. Christianity and magic The first Christians inherited these varied ideas of magic alongside their Roman neighbors. In their world, people

who did “magical” deeds like exorcisms and healings were common. Such people sometimes explained religious or philosophical texts and ideas, as well. This presented a problem for early Christian authors: If wondrous deeds were fairly commonplace, how could a group looking to attract followers compete with “magicians”? After all, Christian leaders like Jesus, Peter and Paul did extraordinary deeds, too. So Christian writers made distinctions in order to elevate their heroes. Take the biblical story of Simon the magician. In Acts 8, Simon’s magical deeds entice the Samaritans and convince them to follow him until the evangelist Philip performs even more amazing miracles, converting all the Samaritans and Simon, too. But Simon relapses when he tries to buy the power of the Holy Spirit, prompting the Apostle Peter to rebuke him. This story is where we get the sin of simony: the purchase of religious office. As I’ve discussed elsewhere, texts like

this do not depict real events. They are teaching tools aimed at showing new adherents the differences between good Christian miracle workers and evil magicians. The earliest converts needed such stories because wonder workers looked a lot alike. Christianity and morality To some ancient people, stories of Jesus’ miracles probably didn’t seem far removed from the deeds magicians performed for money in the marketplace. In fact, the church fathers had to shield Jesus and the Apostles against accusations of practicing magic. They include Origen of Alexandria, who in the middle of the third century AD defended Christianity against Celsus, a pagan philosopher who charged Jesus with being a magician. Celsus argued that the miracles of Jesus were no different from the magic performed by marketplace sorcerers. Origen agreed the two shared superficial

similarities, but claimed they were fundamentally different because magicians cavorted with demons while Jesus’ wonders led to moral reformation. Like the story of Simon the magician, Origen’s disagreement with Celsus was a means of teaching his audience how to tell the difference between morally suspect magicians who sought personal gain and miracle workers who acted for the benefit of others. Ancient authors invented the idea that the miracles of Christians possessed inherent moral superiority over non-Christian magic because ancient audiences were as enticed by magic as modern ones. But in elevating Christianity above magic, these writers created false distinctions that linger even today. • This article is republished from The Conversation, an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts. Pastor Munroe is also loving, supportive wife to Apostle Cleon Munroe. She not only calls him husband, but respects him as her spiritual father, friend, mentor, lover and confidant. Apostle Munroe has played an instrumental role in pushing his wife to be the woman she is today, the church family said. “Moreover, her love for her stepchildren, CJ and Ariel, is amazing. There is a saying about family not always being blood...(instead) it is the people in your life who want you in theirs; the ones who accept you for who you are; the ones who would do anything to see you smile and love you no matter what This is clearly displayed in the relationship between Pastor Munroe and her stepkids,” said the Miracle Life team. “It is our pleasure to honour such a mighty woman.”
