RELIGION

THE TRIBUNE

Would you risk your soul for worldly wealth?

Matthew 16:26 asks the question

By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Reporter acadet@tribunemedia.net

“W

hat good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?” (Matthew 16:26) In Matthew 16, Jesus Christ predicts his own death. His question about the soul is

directed at his disciples. He tells them they can keep their earthly interests or they can save their souls. Tribune Religion asked readers how they interpret this passage and what it means to them. Casey Mitchell said: “This world has a lot of well-off people who live their lives corrupt and immoral. And on the other hand, there are also those who don’t become consumed

with things of this world, which is why scriptures like this were made. It is worthless to have the world and no soul; you’d be nothing but empty.” Monica Ferguson said for her it means that arrogance has zero value. “In this life we should all come to a point where we realise it is not all about us; one person. It is best to humble yourself before God humbles you,” she said.

Michelle Rolle added: “Many persons take up time in their lives to long for things that have no meaning, you know, worldly things. And in this scripture here, Jesus is warning against it. It is bogus and meaningless to just focus on gaining power and riches. And to get it, lose your soul? It is not only on television we see persons selling their soul for wealth, it is in real life too.”

Jesus leaves those who will hear Him with only two alternatives. What is the ultimate benefit to someone who acquires everything the world could ever possibly offer, only to spend an eternity suffering in separation from God? What is a soul worth? What should a man give in return for the saving of his soul? This is the ultimate question.

Up and down “UP and down” – this phrase means so much to so many depending on the circumstances: When grades go up the praises come down and at graduation, we celebrate students’ accomplishments and efforts. This has been such a challenging time for our children and yet many have enjoyed sweet success all the same. When prices go up the lifestyle of too many come down below the poverty line. There are many reasons for inflation, but the bottom line is that nutritious meals become harder to prepare and escalating anxiety levels undermine our health. I do agree that fruits and vegetables

have to become breadbasket items if we want to improve our national health. When weight goes up, the wrath of the doctors and nurses comes down in the form of warnings that we are digging our graves with our knives and forks. Poor eating habits, fried food, sugary drinks, late night snacks and junk food are all contributing to preventable diseases. When tourism arrivals go up, we expect unemployment figures to come down as more people are able to be employed. Planes going up in record airlift to additional destinations means more guests to come down to

the islands to enjoy leisure time with us. When hurricane predictions go up to nineteen, our hurricane preparedness has to bring us down to prioritizing our own safety and that of our families. No projectiles should be allowed to damage the homes of our neighbours. By far the most significant point to be made at this time is, however, that this is the time of year when the Lord goes up and the Holy Spirit comes down. We celebrated the ascension of our Lord ten days before we commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit on the first disciples at Pentecost.

REV ANGELA C BOSFIELD PALACIOUS MEDITATION We are left for this short period of time to wait to see what God is going to do next. The crucified Lord had been with his disciples for several weeks and now He must go back to His Father and receive His new and glorious body.

How are we going to measure up to God’s expectations if we do not want to go down on our knees to pray? The presence of the Holy Spirit is promised to us, and we need only ask. Ask God to anoint you with the Holy Spirit for the first time after you confess your sins and accept that Jesus is both our crucified Saviour and our resurrected Lord. If you have done this before, then now is the time to pray for even more of the Holy Spirit to fill you, and for you to intercede on behalf of others who do not know the secret joy of salvation. Do not allow anyone to go down to the grave

without having lifted up his/her voice to God in prayer and praise while he/ she still had time. It is up to us to make a difference while we are down here on earth. The time will come when no work is to be done and we are invited to eternal rest. After all that God has already done, it is up to us to not let God down. • Rev Angela Palacious, a motivational speaker and author of several devotional books, is an Anglican priest. Tribune sports reporter and Queen’s College teacher ordained as new Baptist reverends D

URING the 56th anniversary of Macedonia Baptist Church on Bernard Road, Ministers Brent Stubbs, Tribune senior sports reporter, and Denero Rahming, a religious studies teacher, were ordained as reverends. The two men, who both grew up in the church, will serve the congregation under the leadership of Senior Pastor Rev Dr Hartman Nixon. The celebration and ordination service were held last Sunday under the theme “Kingdom Citizens Preparing Others for his Coming,” which was taken from Matthew 28: 18-20. The ceremony was conducted by the Reverend Trajean Jadorette, senior pastor of New Covenant Baptist Church and the moderator of the Bethel Baptist Association. Bishop J Carl Rahming, pastor of St Paul’s Baptist Churchm Fox Hill, was the moderator. The ordination council, which approved the appointment of the two reverends, consisted of Rev Dr Victor Cooper, pastor of New Bethany Baptist Church; Bishop Marilyn Thompson, pastor of Mount Peran Baptist Church, and Rev Clinton Minnis, pastor of Providence Baptist Church. After they were both presented to the church by Rev Patrick Rutherford and Bishop Stanley Ferguson, pastor of the New Free Community Baptist Church, provided a charge to the two newly ordained reverends, who were robed by their respective wives, Joan Stubbs and Denaire Rahming. Rev Minnis presented a charge to the church. Mr Stubbs, 56, is the senior sports reporter at The Tribune newspaper. Born to the late Berdie Stubbs and Frederick Marshall in New Providence, Mr Stubbs is twin to Belinda Stubbs, with older siblings

NEWLY ordained Rev Brent Stubbs (left) and Rev Denero Rahming.

Patricia Thompson-Martin, Louise and Sharie Marshall, and Natalie Duncombe, as well as step-brother Cornell Stubbs. As a young boy growing up in Fox Hill, one of the valuable lessons he learned at Sandilands Primary School was that “blessed is the man that walked not in the council of the ungodly, nor stander in the way of sinners.” This quote from Psalms chapter one has played an important role in everything he has done in his life. After Sandilands, Mr Stubbs enrolled for one year at LW Young. He then entered St Augustine’s College, where he emerged as one of the school’s most accomplished distance runners for the ‘Big Red Machine’ track and field team. However, an injury hampered the completion of his career during his graduating year, 1984. It was during this time he started writing sports articles for the The Augustine, his school’s newsletter. A year later, in 1985, Mr Stubbs started his long career with The Tribune newspaper, where he remains on staff until this day. He has travelled the world to cover CARIFTA Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships and several Olympics. In 2019, he received the International Sports Press Association Certificate of Achievement for this coverage of the IAAF World Championships and the SAC Alumni Association’s Lighthouse Award for Sports Journalism. At Macedonia, Mr Stubbs has served in many posts – youth president and director, usher, bus driver, and now, Men’s president, while being ordained as a deacon and minister of the gospel.

He is married to Joan SmithStubbs and together they have four children. Mr Stubbs’ fellow newly ordained reverend, Mr Rahming, 28, serves as a high school Religious Education teacher at Queen’s College, having recently graduated from the American Baptist College and Vanderbilt University Divinity School in Nashville, Tennessee. Mr Rahming was born to Alvado and Daphne Rahming, the last of four sons. Upon accepting the call to ministry at a early age, he was determined to follow God’s will regardless of the cost. In the fall of 2014, as a thirdyear Biochemistry major at the University of the Bahamas, he transferred to the American Baptist College, where he completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in Bible and Theology, graduating magna cum laude in 2017. Immediately after, he pursued and completed his Master of Divinity degree at the Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, with a certificate in Black Church Studies and concentrations in Pastoral and Prophetic Congregational Ministry, Black Religion and Culture Studies, and Chaplaincy. During that time, he served as chaplain at the Monroe Carrell Jr Children’s Hospital and in various positions at several ministries in Nashville. He has also done extensive work for the National Baptist Convention in the US. Mr Rahming ascribes all his accomplishments to his acknowledgement of God as head of his life. He is married to Denaire Pickstock-Rahming.
