Back to happy! By Ayanna Cartwright
R
ecently, I’ve started a “Getting Back to Happy” quote series. Nothing major, just a few quotes here and there remind my listeners that sometimes we do fall off the “happy” train (for whatever reason) and need to get back to being happy as soon as possible. The first thing we did was define what sadness was. People say that sadness is loss, depression, lack, and so many other things. For me, (a simple gal, with simple tastes) sadness is simply “the lack of happiness.” We can’t determine when happiness is lost, but its effects are notable: 1. There are physical effects. From headaches, to fatigue and lack of sleep, unhappiness affects our bodies. 2. There are emotional/social effects. Depression and unhappiness can affect our feelings toward ourselves and how we interact with others. How can we determine that unhappiness has crept into our psyche? Here is a list of things to look out for: 1. Your focus to gain material things increases 2. You are consistently comparing yourself to someone else in some way 3. You have embraced the idea that happiness will come “later” 4. Gossip is your “go-to” conversation
5. You have issues forgiving yourself There are more tell-tale signs, but these make up a common list of signs that we may be experiencing unhappiness on some level. With total transparency, I’ll admit that I have experienced several, if not all, of these signs at various times in my life. Admittedly, at one point, I was an extremely unhappy person. The cause of that unhappiness we can discuss at a later time, but I will say this. At some point, the only things that helped me get “back to happy” were: 1. Understanding I was not alone. Yes, the Word promises that God will never leave nor forsake us; but I’m talking about accepting the network of family and friends around you who love and support you unconditionally. There is healing in the village. 2. Do not “check out” of your life and settle for existing when you can experience living. I regained control of living through the intentional act of showing up to an exercise class. Some days, I said absolutely nothing. Other days, I lay on the floor crying, but I refused to stop showing up. Now? Well, let’s just say, I’ve checked back in to my life. 3. Avoid setbacks but remain persistent. If there is one thing I have learned about my happiness, it is that there will always be a fight to maintain it. In the
beginning I was bombarded with all sorts of weapons that would throw me backward into my depression. Gossip, malicious behaviour toward me, circumstances seeming not to change for the better – you name it. But none of it overrode my persistence to get back to and beyond the old “Ayanna!” Every day was a struggle to maintain a smile, a positive attitude and a progressive mindset. And every day, I suited up and prepared for the battle! This list works for everyone, and I’m sure there are those of you who have probably conquered your own unhappiness and got back to happy using these or similar steps. Phillippians 4:4 gives us great insight into the foundation of perpetual happiness: Keep it about your relationship with God! The verse says simply, “Rejoice in the Lord always...” We can remain happy when we realise our relationship with Him is paramount to all the vicissitudes of life we may indeed face! We can remain happy when we understand that hardship shouldn’t be taken personally. When hardship comes in any form, it is a part of life. When we lose a loved one...when we experience unfair treatment on the job...when a relationship
ends...when we find ourselves in a maelstrom of bad happenings of any kind – they are a part of this thing we call life. No doubt, we can and will react in the moment – sadness, guilt, some feeling – but after, we can consider who we are and whose we are. We understand
any weeping endures for a night (however long night might be) and joy...happiness...returns in the morning! Hold on – morning is on the way! God bless you this week!

What does spiritual self-care look like?
By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net WITH more people experiencing burn-out, physically, mentally and emotionally, the concept of self-care has been receiving an increasing amount of attention in recent times, and for good reason. Self-care is rooted in people prioritising and paying attention to themselves in ways that promote overall well-being. Most of the ways people take time to care for themselves involve maybe taking a break from one’s regular routine, going for a massage, exercising, making better choices about food, or just simply indulging in activities they do not usually have the time to do.
However, when it comes to spirituality, few see it as an area to put emphasis on when it comes to the practice of self-care. Several Christian faithfuls spoke with Tribune Religion about how cultivating a spiritual and prayer life is the best form of self-care they can engage in. Darnell Moxey said self-care is a term she hears a lot nowadays. While she believes it is a good thing that people are being encouraged to temporary pull the plug on the daily stresses of life, attention on others areas like spirituality should be emphasised as well. “Life is so full of hustle. Every were you turn people are bragging about how busy their lives are and how they do not have much time to engage in
activities that boost their mood and mental state,” she said. “Those who have the greater awareness about self-care turn to various activities like yoga and other things, but very rarely to do you hear spiritual self-care being pushed. As Christians, we should not be turning to the self-care practices that do not include our spiritual life. Our spiritual life is the source of all things, so how can you not direct your self-care practices towards your spiritual care?” Spiritual self-care can include a myriad of activities, including meditation, daily devotional time, and/or prayer breaks throughout the course of one’s day. Francis Butler said: “In my book, prayer is the best form of self-care there is. I could be
feeling emotionally sick; not in good mood, feeling down and depressed, and the best pickme-up is when I begin to pray. Prayer is powerful because it invites the presence of God into your situation and circumstance,” he said. As for Myrtle Cox, her spiritual self-care involves taking praise breaks throughout the day. “I have come to the place in my spiritual life where any opportunity I get I want to honour God and give Him thanks. My self-care sometimes means when I am at work, taking a bathroom break, I talk to God. I need His wisdom and insight for the troubles that I face in my life. Truthfully, once I turn my attention to God I am at peace. Being at peace is
the most important thing to me because it means I am a great state mentally,” she said. Whether you enjoy meditation, attending a religious service, or praying, spiritual selfcare is important , said Florence Johnson. “People need to take an inventory of how they spend their time. You can spend your time doing all the other things you think equate to self-care, but if you are not taking care of yourself spiritually as a Christian, you will be out of sync and not in the best mental or emotional state,” she said. “And with all that is going on in the world today, having a foundation to stand on that is immovable and faithful is the best thing a Christian can do.”

The Catholic Church's views on exorcism have changed – a religious studies scholar explains why
PAINTING of Saint Francis Borgia performing an exorcism, as depicted by Goya (c. 1788) By JOSEPH P LAYCOCK Texas State University (THE CONVERSATION) – In September 2021, a three-year-old was killed during an exorcism in a small Pentecostal church in San Jose, California. The child’s throat was allegedly squeezed and her head held down during the ceremony, which likely asphyxiated her. In May 2022, three members of the victim’s family were charged with felony child abuse. Several famous deaths have occurred during exorcism rituals in the past. In 1976, Anneliese Michel of Germany died of dehydration and malnutrition after nearly 10 months of Catholic
exorcisms. In 2005, Maricica Irina Cornici, a Romanian Orthodox nun, died in an ambulance following an exorcism in which she was chained to a cross. While exorcism is practiced in the majority of the world’s cultures, in the Western imagination it is most associated with Catholicism. That association has been either an asset or a liability to the church at various periods throughout history. For most of the 20th century, exorcism was incredibly rare in Western nations and often regarded with embarrassment by Catholic authorities. After William Friedkin’s film “The Exorcist” came out in 1973, Juan Cortez, a Jesuit priest and psychology
professor at Georgetown University, told Newsweek that he did not believe demons exist. Today, the Catholic Church has reversed its attitude about discussing exorcism almost completely. In 1991, church authorities allowed an exorcism to be televised for the ABC show “20/20.” Father Richard P McBrien, who appeared on “Nightline” to question the wisdom of this decision, told The Catholic Courier that exorcism was being presented this way to advance a political agenda, not to save souls. He stated: “The real objective of that project, I submit, was to help bring back that old-time religion, when everyone,
women especially, knew their place, when Catholics obeyed without question every directive from on high, and when there was never any question that the Catholic Church was the one true church with all the answers to all the important questions we have about life, both here and hereafter.” As a religious studies scholar who writes about exorcism from a historical perspective, I believe the church’s changing stance on exorcism has little to do with our culture’s understanding of mental illness or other scientific advances and more to do with competing visions of the church as described by McBrien.

A YOUNG woman being exorcised by a Benedictine monk in a panel painting from 1512. Superstition and stigma Historically, America’s Protestant majority stigmatised Catholics as “superstitious immigrants.” After Vatican II, a worldwide meeting of Catholic bishops held between 1962 and 1965, there was an effort to downplay the more supernatural elements of the Catholic tradition. Especially controversial were traditions dealing with what historian Robert Orsi calls “presence,” or the belief that supernatural forces operate among us rather than in some transcendent realm. Many church authorities believed if they did not “modernise” they would lose the younger generation. As Catholic novelist Flannery O’Connor described the prevailing attitude in 1962, “the supernatural is an embarrassment.” Ironically, as the church tried to modernise, the counterculture had a growing interest in the occult, popularising books and films that paved the way for “The Exorcist.” The film became a social phenomenon, and suddenly priests were being inundated with people demanding exorcisms. William O'Malley, a Jesuit priest who had a role in the film, described this surge to sociologist Michael Cuneoin the following way: “I was teaching at a Jesuit high school in Rochester at the time, and for a while the phone wouldn’t stop ringing. … They called looking for an instant fix
– pleading with me to expel their own demons, their kids’ demons, even their cats’ demons. It’s not that I rule out the possibility of demonic possession. As the saying goes, ‘There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.’ But this movie seems to have set off some really strange vibrations.” Many conservative Catholics loved “The Exorcist.” Traditionalists – conservative Catholics who object to the reforms of Vatican II – capitalised on this new demand for exorcism, claiming that modernisation had left Catholics vulnerable to demonic attack. The Catholic Church also had competition: People who could not get an exorcism from the Catholics now had a variety of other options. Pentecostals had been casting out demons for decades. There was also a milieu of New Age healers offering exorcisms. The return of the exorcists The 1917 Code of Canon Law was the first official comprehensive codification of church law, and it mandated each bishop appoint an official exorcist. But most dioceses did not actually do this, and this requirement was removed when the code was updated in 1983. The International Association of Exorcists was formed in 1990 to lobby the Vatican to take exorcism more seriously. In 2004, the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
asked dioceses around the world to once again appoint an exorcist. These new exorcists had to be trained, so in 2005 a special course was offered at the Vatican seminary, the Regina Apostolorum. One priest who undertook that training was Father Gary Thomas, whose experiences were described by journalist Matt Baglio and became the basis for the 2011 film “The Rite.” In the film, a priest with little faith is sent to Rome to learn exorcism, culminating in a dramatic battle against the demon Baal. In 2014, the International Association of Exorcists finally received a degree of formal recognition from the Vatican. Francis, who assumed the papacy in 2013, has been viewed as friendly toward exorcism. In 2017, he encouraged priests to refer parishioners to an exorcist if their process of discernment determined it was truly needed. Paradoxically, Francis’ openness toward exorcism may be related to his progressive agenda. Francis is the first Jesuit pope. The Jesuit order – the same order Father Karras belongs to in “The Exorcist” – emphasises education, and Jesuits have long had a reputation for being free thinkers. Right-wing conspiracy theories have accused the Jesuits of supporting communism or trying to corrupt the church from within. As pope, Francis has made relatively tolerant statements about homosexuality and
criticized capitalism – moves that could alienate the church’s conservative wing. But traditionalists can at least take solace in Francis being open to exorcism and the reality of the demonic. Historically, exorcism has also been a way to attract new converts. Some of the people who thought they were possessed after watching “The Exorcist” became interested in Catholicism and started attending mass. The year the film came out, the media described a Catholic exorcist in San Francisco who helped a family that believed they were under demonic attack. As a result, one family member converted from Orthodox Judaism to Catholicism. Any chance for new converts must hold appeal to a church with declining numbers and still under the cloud of clerical abuse scandals. As these trends continue, time will tell how long figures like Pope Francis can hold the centre. Meanwhile, it is likely that exorcism will find an increasing appeal among Catholics as well as other denominations. ‘Thou preparest a table before me’ – THE MEANING BEHIND THIS PSALM 23 SCRIPTURE
By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Reporter acadet@tribunemedia.net THERE are many memorable scriptures and verses to be found in the Bible that people choose to take with them as they navigate their daily lives. One of the lengthier scriptures that stands out to many believers is Psalm 23. Tribune Religion has previously taken a look at the most memorable verses in Psalm 23, and today we highlight the fifth verse: “Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.” A number of local Christians shared their thoughts on the verse with us. “For me, it is exactly what it says; your enemies will literally have to watch God above bless you. And while they are at it, you can sit down
and feast confidently, knowing that you will feast in His perfect security. And this is just a ‘wow’ moment,” said Sarah Johnson. Tashina Forbes said that in the midst of all your enemies, or what some people may call ‘haters,’ God is going to openly bless you in the front of them. Michelle Stuart said this scripture can be a great prayer for people who find themselves worrying about others. “I like to remember the saying that goes ‘don’t worry about the things they do to you, because hate in your heart will consume you too.’ So, for me and my hardships, when it comes to people not accepting me, I remain humble and leave the rest to God. The saying ‘what God has for me is for me’ is a cliché, but it is so true on so many levels,” said Ms Stuart.
For Vanessa Bethel, this verse was one of the first scriptures she learned as a child. “At that time, I did not grasp what this really meant, until I got older. God preparing a table before me tells me that God is first of all, a great provider. This means that He will provide all the things that I need. And the fact the He prepares a table before me in front of my enemies means to me that no matter what plans the enemy has for me, God will always be a buffer and then exalt me, especially in the face of those who hope to see me fall and fail,” she said. She added: “This is a comforting scripture because it echoes the message that God will always be there for me and will overwhelm me with His blessings to the point where my cup will certainly run over.”
