Bahamian comic nominated for prestigious Eisner Award

EING nominated for a Will Eisner Comic Industry Award is a terrifying yet validating experience for Bahamian illustrator Nicole Miles who is still trying to find her way in the world of comics.

Nicole’s comic “Barbara” (ShortBox) is nominated for a Best Single Issue/One Shot. She faces off against some of the most prominent names in the industry. Her fellow nominees are: “Hellboy: Krampusnacht” by Mike Mignola and Adam Hughes (Dark Horse), “Pope Hats #5” by Ethan Rilly (AdHouse Books), “The Spotted Stone” by Rick Veitch (Sun Comics), and “What Is Left” by Rosemary Valero-O’Connell (ShortBox).

The awards are presented by Comic-Con International: San Diego, nonprofit educational corporation dedicated to creating awareness of and appreciation for comics and related popular art forms, primarily through the presentation of conventions and events that celebrate the historic and ongoing contribution of comics to art and culture.

An Eisner Award is to a comic artist what an Oscar is to an actor, and it is a significant accomplishment to have one’s work nominated.

With the comic “Barbara”, Nicole said she mashed different ideas together to open up discussion.

“I wondered about when I sometimes see vegan compassion for animals not extending to marginalised people, which seems bizarre to me. It was a chance to peek at those questions. But I didn’t want it to be preachy or judgemental. I just wanted to ask, ‘How does this stuff fit together?’ and have fun with it.”

Nicole first became interested in comics in high school when a friend introduced her to manga (Japanese comics). She remembered making silly comics chronicling her and her friends’ highly exaggerated adventures – each of them re-imagined with super powers.

“At the end of 2016 I did a two-page comic about a young witch composting kitchen waste as a personal project to try my hand at making a coherent comic. Buzzfeed saw that and asked me to do a much longer comic for Black History Month. Since then I’ve been contacted for more and more comic work,” she said.

Nicole gets great satisfaction from seeing it all come together. And while the sketching phase can get a bit stressful, as it involves putting together a coherent story when her imagination is running wild with ideas, the overall process is still a joy.

The medium of comics, she said, is brilliant, versatile and accessible, and “can be light and humorous or very sobering, or a mix of all sorts of things.”

The award-winning photographer tells Cara Hunt how thrilling it has been to record both history in the making as well as the beauty of the Bahamas.

E

ric Rose was a high school student participating in the Junior Achievement programme when he was given his first camera, a basic point-and-shoot that would literally change the way he saw the world.

“My JA advisor, Montez Williams, gave me the camera because he told me I had ‘an eye for seeing things’,” he told Tribune Weekend.

That gift inspired Eric to consider a career in journalism and he enrolled in the College of the Bahamas, where he was mentored by Margaret Guillaume, one of the country’s first successful female photojournalists.

“I always wanted to show my world to people, which is one of the reasons that I started writing poetry and then photography, because photography is really poetry with light.”

During his time at the College of the Bahamas, Eric had the incredible experience to photograph former South African President Nelson Mandela when he visited the Bahamas shortly after his release from prison.

Eric transferred from the College of the Bahamas to Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia where he completed his Bachelor in Journalism.

There, he was the editor of the school’s newspaper The Panther.

“I really honed my skills as a photographer when I was in Atlanta. I got to photograph some amazing people, including Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Johnnie Cochran, Chaka Chan and Keith Sweat, and the group Mista,” he said.

After graduation, Eric embarked on his journalism career with a four-month stint at The Tribune before settling down at Bahamas Information Systems (BIS) where he took on the role of both information officer and photographer.

“This has been an amazing experience,” he says of his career. “It is an eye-opening experience to be behind the scenes of history and world events.

What you see in the media is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the level of protocol which takes place behind the scenes.”

Since starting to work for BIS, Eric has been fortunate enough to travel to more than 20 countries and all over the Bahamas, and has covered many important world events.

“I have been blessed to have covered and met all of the prime ministers of the Bahamas, including having had the privilege of interviewing the late Sir Lynden Pindling. I also had the privilege of covering Sir Sean Connery when he did the very first reading at Woodcock Primary School. He lost his voice and the kids had to finish reading for him,” he said.

“My travels have definitely made me appreciate the Bahamas more. When you see how people in other countries live you begin to see that what we have in the Bahamas is a blessing and you begin to appreciate just how much culture we have.

“It was my honour to cover the Bahamian culture. We have such style and flair, and Bahamians are amazing and talented as anyone else in the world.”

Eric can also attest first-hand to Eric Rose gets to work in China. the beauty of the Bahamas as he has travelled to 27 islands and cays in the country, particularly due to his coverage of the annual E Clement Bethel National Arts Festival.

“I have seen a myriad of Bahamian talent and expression covering that event, including a 71-year-old man whose 80-year-old wife had to take his guitar to the festival site for him ahead to coverage the National Arts Festiof his performance because he was very val,” he said.

Pressed to name his favourite site in the Bahamas, Eric said Crooked Island has to be among them.

“It is the most beautiful place to photograph and just has this amazing mix of history and beauty. Crooked Island has one of the county’s first post offices and the Bird Rock Lighthouse.”

When he is not covering events around the country, Eric is enjoying his pastime of nature photography.

“I was always inspired by photographers here in the Bahamas, from the early colonial postcard images captured by the likes of James Osbourne ‘Doc’ Sands and Stanley Toogood, to the work of persons such as Derek Smith, Roland Rose, Garth Mitchell, Donald Knowles, Lorenzo Lockhart and, of course, my COB lecturer Margaret Guillaume. I believe that you cannot truly appreciate photography in the Bahamas without knowing the work of those who helped to pave the way. I also realised that I was good at that kind of photography when a photo I took of goat racing in Trinidad was published as a spread in Afar magazine.

“That was my first international break,” he explained. “Since then my work has been published/displayed quite a few times abroad and I have won several awards, including being the first international winner of the YingShi Ju Photo award in China.”

One of the subjects Eric particularly loves to do is photograph is urban beauty, “which is showing the beauty that people may miss in their neighbourhoods, like old buildings.”

Eric’s latest project is a coffee table book of scenes from the Bahamas which will available soon and is called “Our Bahama Land/Sun/Sea”.

He also has a poetry book called “Poetry and a Life Renewed” which is available on Amazon and at Doongalik Studios.

Kishan Munroe adds new chapter to award-winning ‘Swan Song’

ahamian artist and social commentator Kishan Munroe has just released a never before seen painting he created as part of his ongoing tribute to the four marines who lost their lives in the sinking of the HMBS Flamingo on May 10, 1980.

Kishan explained that he was originally commissioned to do the piece for a private collector, but said that he wanted to make it public to commemorate the anniversary of the sinking which occurred earlier this month.

“The piece is called ‘I’ll Fly Away’.

I did it a shortly after I did the ‘Swan Song of the Flamingo’ and it was a private commission,” he told Tribune Weekend.

“I wanted to release it this month to commemorate the anniversary and it is especially more relevant because two of the marines who survived the attack have recently passed.”

In the painting, a marine is being lifted up to the heavens cradled by flamingos. The painting is coloured with Kishan’s signature blues and pinks – a nod to the colonial past of the country.

“I was inspired to produce this particular piece as a counter to the negativity and the depression that is associated with the ‘Swan Song of the Flamingo’ work. That was all about the horror of the event, but I wanted to paint something that, although still depicting a sad event, had some beauty associated with it,” he explained.

“I chose the title ‘I’ll Fly Away’ based on that hymn that is always sung at funerals,” he added. “And in the painting, the marine is literally being lifted up to the heavens.”

On 10 May 1980, the HMBS Flamingo attempted to arrest two Cuban fishing vessels, the Ferrocem 165 and the Ferrocem 54, for poaching in Bahamian waters. In retaliation, two Cuban MiG-21s invaded Bahamian airspace and fired on the patrol boat. The Cubans sank the ship with their 23mm cannons and fired upon

Fenrick Sturrup, Austin Smith, David Tucker and Edward Williams, all Bahamian Defence Force officers, were killed in the attack.

Fifteen crewmen and the commander made it safely to Duncan Town on Ragged Island after being picked up by the fishing vessels they had boarded. The poachers were convicted in July 1980, and Cuba eventually admitted responsibility, paying the Bahamas $10 million in compensation for the incident.

Kishan has been committed to remembering the incident through artistic expression and spent three years travelling between the two countries, engaging through dialogue and meeting those affected.

The result was the “Swan Song of the Flamingo”, a collaborative project that married his visual artistry with the work of other Bahamian and Cuban artists from various disciplines to create a boundary-shattering programme that shines a spotlight on a painful period in Bahamian history.

“The works that were created as a part of this project were crafted to ensure enlightenment and the cultivation of critical analysis for future generations. Those who have forgotten will be reminded. Those who never knew will be taught,” said Kishan.

His efforts won him a the prestigious Bridget Jones Award for Caribbean Studies.

Pioneering Spanish chef celebrates the bounty of Bahamian seas

he innovative restaurateur who is credited with bringing the tapas movement to America is now introducing his unique celebration of seafood to the Bahamas.

Fish by José Andrés has officially opened at The Cove, Atlantis, on Paradise Island. It is the second location for the restaurant franchise which was first introduced at the MGM National Harbor near Washington, DC. At The Cove, Chef Andrés – an avid diver, humanitarian and one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World for 2018 – hopes to recreate his celebration of the magic and the bounty of the sea.

The menu offers some unique and interesting interpretations of local fish and other seafood dishes, making the most of the seasonal ‘catch of the day’ as well as offering a fine dining environment.

Menu items range from the simple and flavourful to the innovative and creative, and can be served as either small plates (tapas style) for sharing or as larger dishes.

Popular choices include the local Bahamian conch, served as traditional scorched conch or, with a José Andrés twist, as conch fritters with a liquid centre, much like Spanish croquetas; hog snapper, grilled over a wood fire and served with a crisp endive salad, Marcona almonds and radishes, and the seared scallops, with Hawaiian hearts of palm, tamarind, caper berries and citrus.

“We have a tapas style where we give guests an option to share the items. Whatever is ready first, comes out. Favourites on the menu so far has been the Nassau grouper. Next to that our second most popular item would be the hog snapper. Our top appetisers would be the conch fritters, which are served different here. Chantel Saunders, the restaurant’s manager, said the response from the general public since the official opening last month has been nothing short of tremendous. She said people are raving about the food and the atmosphere.

As guests enter the restaurant they are greeted by a lounge with a seating area crowned with a cylindrical

hanging light sculpture made of hundreds of white and gold ceramic fish. To the right is the bar with a dramatic glowing backdrop that gives the impression of a giant blue wave. In the dining room, wall of floor-to-ceiling windows connect the space to the resort’s white sand beaches.

The dining room also offers guests several dining options – ranging from intimate banquettes with rattan

partitions, to private dining spaces for larger parties that can be enclosed with fishnet curtains.

“The room is beautiful and everyone is telling us what a fabulous time they are having here. And for those persons who think there is only fish available here as an option, I tell them it is not true. While we have a very strong seafood-based menu, we also offer a fabulous 14-ounce rib eye steak of pure pleasure. There is a fantastic tender and moist jerk chicken, and for the children we have all sorts of options like the popular mac and cheese.

For the veggie lovers we have a wide selection such as the cob salad, kale salad, and more. On the menu so far my favourite would be the shrimp and grits, and we do a fantastic rendition of it,” said Ms Saunders.

She also explained how Fish by José Andrés complements the The Cove’s luxurious atmosphere.

At the restaurant’s grand opening last week, Audrey Oswell, president and managing director of Atlantis, said having a partner in Chef Andrés is a gift.

“He is an internationally recognised culinary innovator, author, educator, television personality and humanitarian known for his ground-breaking cuisine in his award-winning restaurants. He has twice been named among Time magazine’s 100 most influential people. He is not about celebrity, he is about being meaningful and purposeful and all of that comes from his heart. I can say that knowing him as I do. He is also a master diver. His many dives with his family have raised the awareness in pursuit of both sustainable fishing practices,” said Ms Oswell.

Troy Outten, assistant manager at Fish, believes it is the Chef Andrés personal touch as it regards the creation of every single dish that makes the experience so special.

“He is pretty hands-on with the design of the menu and the dishes. He was actually here when we were doing the training process. He’s a very outgoing type of guy and you just know he’s present when he is in the room. He is nice and knows the staff pretty much by name. So a very approachable and personable guy,” said Mr Outten.

Chef Andrés himself thanked the Atlantis team for welcoming him and his team to the resort.

“I always loved the ocean. I am a terrible sailor, but I love sailing. The ocean is like a very beautiful bridge, and people of the Bahamas, you are a bridge to the world and that is why places like this is so special. Dreams happen if you work hard enough for them, and when they ask why do you want to have another restaurant, let me tell you why I do it. It is a great way to feel like you belong somewhere,” he said.

Broadway comes to the Bahamas

Featured artists, who will sing beloved tunes by Etta James and Frank Sinatra, will include Ilsha McPhee, Travis Edgecombe, Valene Rolle and Natino Thompson.

This is the second annual showcase produced and directed by Jaynelle McPhee, CEO of Jam Productions.

The organisation prides itself on being one of the only theatre companies to showcase Broadway-style performances in the Bahamas.

With this upcoming performance next month, Jam Productions wanted to highlight the era of the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s.

“We want to showcase the vibrancy of this time and to transport our audience to 20th century Broadway,” Ms McPhee told Tribune Weekend.

“Jam Productions is also using local and youthful talent, as the majority of our cast is under 30. Also, a staple of every show we do is the live music, so virtually every performance will be accompanied by the Jam Band, which will help in giving the audience that Broadway feel.”

For the two nights, Ms McPhee said, the Dundas well be transformed to look and feel like a Golden Age Hollywood theatre.

“We decided on using ‘Gatsby’ attire in order to allow crowd participation. We really want to transform

the Dundas into an Old Hollywood theatre and transport our audience as well. It is also a fun activity for the entire family to join in on; everyone loves to dress up. We will also have a photo booth so that audience members can take photographs with the cast,” she said.

However, the main highlight will be the large group acts that will feature singing, dancing, acting and live music.

“That combination is sure to bring about show-topping performances,” said Ms McPhee.

Besides being one of few theatre companies to showcase Broadwaystyle performances what makes this event unique, she added, is that it will be nothing like Bahamian audiences have seen before.

“We know what to expect from a generic Bahamian stage play, but the Jam showcase is nothing that the Bahamas has seen before. Just Dance Bahamas scores big Atlanta competition

T

he Bahamas stormed the StarQuest International Dance Competition in Atlanta, coming home with an array of platinum and gold medals, as well as special recognition for “visually stunning” choreography.

The team from Just Dance Bahamas, under the direction of head teacher Nonny Price, travelled to Georgia last month to compete in the popular tournament.

The team of dancers represented their country in the three-day event which took place at the Ferst Centre For the Arts on the Georgia Institute of Technology campus.

On the first day of the competition, the senior division dancers performed their solo routines. Caroline Knowles, 17, performed a tap routine to “Energia” and received a high gold medal.

Charlotte Nevins, 17, performed a lyrical routine to “Crystal Ball” and also received a high gold medal. Hers was the second highest scoring lyrical style routine in the division. Charlotte also performed a jazz routine to “Wicked Game” and received a platinum medal – the highest possible adjudication – and a special judges’ award for being “fabulously flexible”. This routine won the second place overall in the solo senior division. Additionally, Charlotte was the first runner-up in the Miss StarQuest Emerging Artist category.

Christa Russell, 15, performed a tap dance to “Drive” and received a platinum medal. She was the first place overall and top-scoring solo performer in the senior division. She beat her teammate and was crowned Miss StarQuest Emerging Artist.

On day two, the teen dancers had their turn to perform their solo routines. Alycia Albury, 13, performed a lyrical routine to “Colours of the Wind” and received a platinum medal.

Stemarciae Bain, 13, performed a jazz routine to “Bottom of the River” and received a platinum medal and a judges’ special award for “fierce attack”. Her routine was the highestscoring jazz style performance in the division. She was also crowned Teen Miss StarQuest Emerging Artist.

Alycia Albury Carlotta Casu, 12, performed a jazz routine to “Mirage” and received a platinum medal. She was the first runner-up to Teen Miss StarQuest Emerging Artist and was the first place overall with her top scoring solo in the teen division.

Day three cranked up the level of excitement as the dancers performed their group routines.

First thing in the morning, the Just Dance Bahamas Junior Dance Company took part in their very first competition. This group consists of 14 young dancers – Giulia Bertoldo, D’Zzria Bethell, Pengshulin Cartwright, Sienna Cheetham, Kailin Hanna, Skyla Knowles, Isabella Lightbourn, Abigail Peart, Ann Pustam, Sofia Reid, Morgan Rutland, Layla Sands, Morgan Sands and Emily Taylor. With an average age of 10, they performed a jazz routine to “Play That Sax”. The first-timers walked away with a platinum medal and the third place Junior Large Group trophy.

Later that day, the Just Dance Bahamas Senior Dance Company performed their routines. Both the group’s hip hop performance titled “Soca

Carlotta Casu Vibes” and their jazz routine “Cosmic Visions” received a platinum medals.

By Me”, with also received a platinum medal, was the highest scoring tap routine of the entire three-day competition.

Even later into the night, the trio of Caroline, Charlotte and Christa performed a tap routine to “Hit The Road, Jack” and received a platinum medal. They placed second in duo/trio category of the senior division.

Caroline Knowles At the end of the competition, Ms Price was recognised with an award for her “visually stunning” choreography.

racy Morgan, star of the NBC’s “30 Rock” and “Saturday Night Live”, will be taking to the stage at Atlantis this Saturday.

Following a deadly motor accident in June 2014 involving a tractor-trailer, Morgan was in a coma for two weeks.

The crash killed Morgan’s friend and collaborator, 62-year-old comedian James McNair. Since then, the comedian has been steadily recovering

and has returned to his career. Fans around the world eagerly awaited his comeback.

Currently on tour with a standup show, and alongside stars like Tiffany Haddish (”Girls Trip”) in the hit show “The Last G” on TBS – Morgan was selected as the Atlantis Live Memorial Day weekend highlight performance due to his long legacy within the comedy circuit, his relevance among local audiences, and above all, his unique ability to make people laugh.

I guess the only criticism I would accept is that it maybe was too attention-grabbing on someone else’s big day.”

Cara says: “Hands down my favourite outfit.

She looked like royalty herself. That colour with her jaunty hat and the Obi inspired sash were lovely. The dress fit her to perfection and she was just flawless.”

Karin says: “Pale pink was a popular choice at this Spring wedding. The hat and cut of the dress are absolutely lovely on Oprah. I just wish she’d gone a size up.

The top looked too tight around the arms and bust (especially from the side).”

Cara says: “Considering that her friend Stella McCartney (who also designed Amal’s dress and the bride’s reception dress) had to whip this up at the last minute, Oprah looked lovely, and yes, it’s hard to hide those boobs, but her hat and her dress were very appropriate for the day.”

Karin says: “Beatrice is known to have made some horrific style choices over the years, so this isn’t too bad in the grand scheme of things (remember her fascinator at Kate and William’s wedding?) Still, for a whopping $16,000 the dress just look too oldfashioned and more suited for an evening wedding.

I hate the sheer balloon sleeves.”

Cara says: “I actually like it.

The pearl detailing is very pretty and I liked her hat as well. The dress seems fun and not as frumpy as what some of the young royals tend to wear. I think the colour was stunning and she looked much better than her sister Eugenie.”

Karin says: “The pink, feathered flying saucer on her head was a bit much.

And at any other event it would have been ridiculous, but somehow it works here.

The soft pink of the coat dress also flatters her. The huge pink stone set in the pearl choker, however, looked a bit tacky.”

Cara says: “Someone likened the hat to a toilet brush, but I thought it a was very English, and Camilla does like a big hat.

And since she pretty much always wears the same coat dress, just in a different colours, her hats are the only thing that stand out.

So all in all, she looked fine.”

SPLIT Meghan, Duchess of Sussex Karin says: “Let’s get right to it. It was very, very simple and plain. And yes, there is a certain elegance to simplicity on that level, but I just wish it had been better fitted (and had just some teensy, tiny decoration somewhere). It kinda just hung on her. However, the tiara and veil – as well as her natural makeup – were all lovely.”

Cara says: “It was not my favourite royal bridal gown. I loved the veil and the symbolism of the flowers representing the Commonwealth. But there is a part of me that wishes she had kicked it up a notch and chosen something that took it from expensive couture gown to princess ready. But hey, her prince thought she looked amazing, and isn’t that all that matters?”

Cara says: “Serena looked lovely. I loved her headpiece. She had her chance to wear a fascinator and she went for it. The only thing that was out of place was her necklace. Perhaps she needed something softer, but overall she was glammed up.”

Cara says: “I loved this dress. It was flirty and fun, and simply elegant in a sexy but classy way. Which is why I wish she had gone a bit more dramatic with the first gown. This was my favourite of the two looks.”

Karin says: “Diana’s niece turned heads with this outfit. And by rights. I think this Dolce & Gabbana dress was one of my faves from the event. It’s just so different from what everyone else wore. I love the emerald green with the bright floral design, the square neckline and the A-line skirt. The matching hat with the veil was also stunning.”

Cara says: “Next to Amal Clooney, this is my second favourite look. I loved this – the colour, the style, the hat that was just enough of a statement, She certainly carries herself like royalty and is as lovely as her late aunt, Princess Diana.”

Karin says: “Idris Elba’s finacée was the talk of the internet with this head-totoe Gucci look featuring the fashion house’s signature stripes. In my opinion, it was a little tacky. But even if she didn’t look like a walking advert for the label, at the end of the day she’s still wearing a long, drab cardigan.”

Cara says: “She was the worst dressed of what I saw.

I mean, it’s the wedding of the year and you are on the arm of Mr Eye Candy himself, and this is what you wear? And the hat didn’t even match in texture or colour. A royal hot mess.”

In ‘Solo,’ a battle for the soul, and tone, of ‘Star Wars’ CANNES, France (AP) — When J J Abrams was a “Star Wars” novice, Lawrence Kasdan, the writer of “The Empire Strikes Back” and “The Return of the Jedi,” had some advice for him: “Star Wars” is not important.

“But what is important is the way people feel about it,” said Kasdan.

“And they are very committed to it.

What they’re committed to is a certain kind of film.”

The question of what constitutes a “Star Wars” film — how it should feel and what it should sound like — was at the center of the battle over the Han Solo spinoff “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and the dispute that resulted in directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord being replaced in mid-production with Ron Howard. Though the pace and improvisational manner of Lord and Miller’s direction was part of the clash, the main issue was, simply, tone.

Good advice

Soap sprays do not kill insects. Instead, the soap’s stickiness makes it difficult for insects to eat or even walk over leaves.

Using soap spray instead of an insecticide and solarising your soil are two methods to dramatically improve your garden, says Jack Hardy

D

uring an evening conversation under my shade tent in the back yard recently I was asked about the best advice I ever gave my readers. I immediately thought about what has almost become my gardening mantra: There is no such thing as a good cheap hose.

Good advice as it is, the problem of perpetually unkinking a cheap hose is only an irritant; it does not improve the garden. After due consideration I came up with two responses that fit the bill: soap spray as an insect deterrent and solarisation of the soil. Boring, yes, but extremely good advice.

Millions – perhaps billions – of dollars are spent by gardeners every year on insecticides. The average

potting shed may have a dozen or more solutions to kill everything from ants to aphids to anthracnose, each one accompanied by dire warnings against misuse. How can simple soap be more effective at keeping one’s garden clear of destructive insects than this impressive array of poisonous promise?

To start off, soap does not kill insects. Soap is sticky and forms a film that makes life very difficult for every insect that tries to eat or even walk over foliage. Imagine you are the size of, say, a ladybug. Walking over a leaf would be like trudging through the deep mud of a salina: irksome and laborious. What soap solution does is make your plants an undesirable area.

It is a preventative rather than a cure.

Many plants (think peppers) become diseased and the source of infection is usually insect activity. No insects, no diseases. Many insects (think whiteflies) lay their eggs on the underside of leaves. To treat them efficiently you have to wear elbow-length rubber gloves and use your arm to expose the undersides, meanwhile spraying with your insecticide of choice. This is one of the most awkward, arduous and dangerous of gardening tasks. If your plants are in pots the task is easier but getting at the undersides of leaves of a plant that is anchored in the soil is a real problem. If you use soap solution to spray your plants all you have to do

afterwards is hose off your arms and hands with water.

Insecticide labels tell you exactly how much poison to mix with water.

With soap there is no perfect ratio. I add about a cupful of liquid soap to a hose end sprayer reservoir because it gets diluted during the spraying process. If I am using a manual or pump sprayer half a cupful per gallon is sufficient. There is no need for exact measurements. Some garden experts recommend adding garlic juice or hot pepper sauce to your soap solution. I do not recommend such additions.

Use liquid soap, not dish washing liquid or detergent. Refresh your plants every month during the productive season as rain will gradually wash away the soap film. The undersides of leaves, of course, remain sticky and protected for much longer than the tops.

Now we have dealt with our above ground insect pests we can turn our attention to below ground pests, the most notable being nematodes that are unsegmented microscopic worms.

Some nematodes are beneficial to the soil but many cause damage to the roots of plants, vegetables in particular.

Root knot nematodes are the easiest to identify through their damage, leaving a cancerous-looking mass of ugly roots.

In Europe during the Middle Ages farmers developed the system of rotation using four distinct areas or

fields. Three fields were planted with very diverse individual crops while the fourth lay fallow and was used to graze cattle that added fertilizer. In subsequent years the crops were grown in the next field, and so on. Rotation was used to get the best out the soil’s fertility as the varied crops had slightly different nutritional requirements.

Mediaeval farmers did not know about microscopic pests in the soil but the practice of rotation combated nematodes very effectively because different nematodes predate on different plant families. The nematodes that infest tomato roots, for instance, do not attack cabbage roots.

It is hard for backyard gardeners to employ a crop rotation system, especially in The Bahamas where our vegetable growing season is so long.

In order to reduce the depredations of nematodes we can use the hot summer months to solarise the soil by laying sheets of clear plastic over the growing areas. Clear plastic allows the sun’s rays to penetrate the soil directly; black plastic sheeting is less effective.

We often complain about our shallow native soil but that becomes an advantage when it comes to solarisation. Nematodes are killed when the soil temperature gets to 120-130 degrees Fahrenheit. Our summer is long so we can lay plastic sheeting in May or early June and lift it to sow and transplant new crops in early October.

Four clear months of high temperature solarisation will substantially reduce – never eliminate – the nematode problem.

Use large gauge clear plastic sheeting and cover the soil after watering the area. You can use a few rocks to pin the edges down. Water is a good conductor of heat so the sheeting must be lifted every week or two to maintain dampness in the soil. If you see a thunderstorm approaching you can whip off your sheeting and get the soil watered by rain.

One very notable benefit of solarising your soil is the fact that you do not have to weed the covered area for months.

These two gardening procedures – soap and solarisation – dramatically improve your chances of growing great vegetable crops during the cooler months. But still remember not to buy a cheap hose…

fter a five-year break, producers of Beaders in Paradise are back and have secured a long-term commitment by worldrenowned jewellery maker and author Kieu Pham Grey.

Kieu, who has developed a prominent presence on Pinterest, will share her expertise with aspiring Bahamian artisans and trained craft makers to help them diversify their product portfolios through different styles of jewellery making.

The Beaders in Paradise workshop, started by Chevette Williamson, CEO of Chevy’s Bead Gallery, has been reintroduced with sessions taking place starting today through Sunday.

Topics for the different classes include “Beachin Rivets”, “Captured Objects”, “Pipe Art”, “Simple Bezeled”, “Spinning Rings” and “Spirited Circles”.

Beaders in Paradise 2018 is an initiative aimed at empowering and transforming the lives of local artisans through exposure to new and innovative ways of jewellery/crafts making and product improvement, and to increase handcraft appeal on the global market and, by extension, export potential.

“In response to the national call for true economic diversification, participation in a national handicraft initiative, finding new and additional ways of packaging our tourism product whilst empowering our people, we reintroduced the programme,” Chevette told Tribune Weekend.

“The fact that our nation in the past grappled with effective responses to the economic recession lent more urgency to our efforts to tap into the creativity of our people, and Beaders in Paradise was birthed. 2018 will be our fourth workshop, with successful workshops held in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Yvette K Hall-Todd, the boutique’s owner, said she is excited to host this event in an effort to advertise her newest business venture. Although

she has been in the retail business for more than 30 years, and has previously owned and managed clothing stores such as Distinctive Fashions and Ketra’s Boutique, Yvette said she has never lost her passion for fashion.

“I love seeing women embrace their inner beauty as much as their outer beauty. It’s not only about selling clothes but empowering others and helping them to live from their divine inner beauty expression,” she told Tribune Weekend.

Yvette, who has also worked as an empowerment specialist, life coach and counsellor for the past 25 years under the Mystical Essence for Well-Being brand, said she took a break from the industry for several years until the launch of the Mystical Essence Beauty Boutique last December. She runs the

shop with her two daughters, Ketra and Kevette Todd.

At the Mystical Essence Beauty Boutique, located on the corner of Market Street and Robinson Road, Yvette specialises in African prints.

On offer are dresses, skirts, pants and handbags, as well as body fragrances, costume jewellery and other accessories.

“Bahamians love our clothing designs. We’ve been able to develop a strong social media following through our Facebook page, ‘Mystical Essence Beauty Boutique’, which has allowed us to connect with clients on the Family Islands. Our African designs have been a major seller given that we feature more modern designs,” said Yvette.

This Sunday’s fashion show, she said, will include such highlights as spoken

word performance by her daughter Ketra, a live DJ, musical performances

by Nyckara Knowles and Kevante Cash, and a selection by the Blue Elite Dance team, all moderated by local entertainer Demetrius Smith.

“It’s an opportunity to unwind on a Sunday afternoon by the pool side and be entertained by local Bahamian talent and wowed by Mystical Essence Beauty Boutique models. The main pieces that are going to be showcased are African dresses, pants, skirts, blouses and dashikis. Due to popular demand, we’ve also included dashikis for men to our line-up. An attorney and a saviour Sir Christopher Ondaatje recalls the outstanding career and legacy of the Bahamian attorney.

I

n Anthony W White’s exemplary book “A Birder’s Guide to the Bahama Islands” (1998) he informs us: “Long Island has one of the largest flocks of endangered West Indian whistling ducks in the world, approximately 450 birds.

Despite their large numbers they can be difficult to see. The whistling ducks are concentrated at the northern end of the island, and gather nightly at Hog Cay off the southern end of Galliot Cay. The owner of Hog Cay puts out nearly 200 pounds of feed every night for the ducks. You cannot go onto Hog Cay without permission from the owner. The best way to see the ducks is to hire a small bonefishing boat ... to take you out between Hog Cay and the Galliot Cay mangrove swamps at dusk. From May to September you have a good chance of seeing the ducks flying to Hog Cay, when the adult birds have finished nesting and escort young birds to and from Hog Cay. In winter when the nights are longer, many whistling ducks wait until dark to fly to Hog Cay and return to Long Island before

In 2000, I met the man Anthony White talked about.

His name is Peter Graham, and he was the lawyer who bought our house Tradewinds for us in Lyford Cay. We soon became very good friends. He is a most extraordinary man.

Peter D Graham was born on October 11, 1927, and founded the firm of Graham Thompson in 1950. For more than 50 years he has played a leading role in the growth of one of Bahamas’ leading legal firms. He still continues to serve as a valued advisor in the long-term planning and strategic development of the firm, and for over 65 years he has usually been the first to arrive at work in the morning.

“I have always gone to work very early. I’m always in the office before 7am. This is because I like the peace and quiet, and can usually get more work done before 9am. than the entire rest of the day.”

Peter Graham’s work ethic and focus on public service has set the tone for several generations of lawyers – still critical for long term career success at Graham Thompson.

From 1956 to 1972, Peter Graham served in the Bahamas Parliament as the Member for the Constituency of Long Island and Ragged Island. He was Minister of Labour from 1964 to 1967, as well as Minister of Housing from 1964 to 1967. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the Central Bank

The West Indian whistling ducks, a rare and an endangered species, have found a home on Hog Cay. of the Bahamas from 1992 to 1998. In 1997, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II appointed Mr Graham as CMG – the Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George – which honours individuals who render extraordinary or important nonmilitary service. He has been a board member of the Lyford Cay Club from 1994 to 2002, and the Club’s chairman from 2000 to 2002.

“My whole government experience was extremely satisfying. I am very honoured to have been invited to serve on the Cabinet during the period of internal self-government. At that time, 1964 to 1967, we were not responsible for foreign affairs.”

It was during Peter Graham’s term, when he was elected to the legislature

for Long Island and Ragged Island, that he discovered Hog Cay.

“In those days there was no airstrip on Long Island – but there was a seaplane which flew there every two weeks. It flew over Hog Cay – and I fell in love with the 220-acre island. The Government policy then was that you could buy Crown land – if you spent a certain amount (at that time $30,000 – a lot of money) on the development of the island – to create local employment. I bought the island in 1962 and built the airstrip and nearly three miles of road, as well as the harbour – which was the most difficult – involving dredging, pumping, and building retaining walls.

The actual harbour was created by building the road, dividing the swamp, and creating the harbour on one portion of the swamp. All this was done – not

with a contract, but with a simple handshake. It was a difficult project and was carried out very efficiently.”

Hog Cay in those days was nearly all scrub, some marsh, but mostly sand. It was a flat island, and the wind-blown sand formed low hills around its shore.

It may historically have only ever been a sand bank – but, as the Grahams found out, there was good fresh water only six feet under ground – where they found conch shells. This water was important not only for their herd of sheep and their chickens, but to provide sustenance for the small flock of nervous West Indian whistling ducks which they were thrilled to find on the island.

My wife and I have spent many wonderful weekends with the Grahams on Hog Cay where the flock of whistling

ducks has grown considerably in the fifty-six years that Peter Graham has owned the island. The ducks have now completely transformed the character of the island where we have feasted on boiled fish and Johnny cake and other delicacies. The evenings, with a couple of sundowners, watching the birds feeding on the “dance floor” are pure magic. There are now between 1,500 and 2,000 whistling ducks. It is an amazing sight.

The West Indian whistling duck (sometimes called a tree duck) is the largest of the eight species of unique whistling ducks found throughout the world’s tropical regions. It is a large goose-like duck with relatively long legs that extend beyond the tail in flight. The feathers on the upper part

Continuds from page 23 of the duck are mostly brown with pale edging. The throat is white, but the lower neck is streaked with black. The chest is reddish and its underbelly is white with dark spots. It is a beautiful bird with its brown markings merging attractively into each other. It has a long black bill, long head, and longish dark legs. The foreneck is pale, and it has a light brown face. Whistling ducks are mostly nocturnal and secretive, inhabiting wooded swamps, lagoons and mangroves where they roost and feed on plant food including the fruit of the royal palm. They habitually perch in trees, but tends to spend the daylight hours hidden in vegetation.

The voice of the whistling duck is a haunting shrill whistled chiriria chiriria from which one of its Spanish names is derived: Chiriria del Caribe (in Puerto Rico). Other local names are whistler, mangrove duck, night duck (Jamaica), yaguasa (Cuba), and gingeon (Haiti).

In flocks the birds seem constantly and nervously to be chatting among themselves – a cacophony which continues deep into the night. Birds are easily disturbed, but on Hog Cay are faithful to their main feeding ground – returning to be fed soon after dawn, and in the early evening.

Whistling ducks have an ill-defined breeding season, and nests, although difficult to find, have been recorded every month of the year. Birds usually nest in a cluster of palm fronds, where branches have fallen forming a conical shape at the bottom of the tree. Nests are usually on the ground, near water, where the birds line a shallow depression with fallen leaves and other loose vegetation, but nests have also been reported in low tree holes and on horizontal branches. Both parents incubate the eggs throughout the day and night, and family bonds are strong. Both male and female parents stay with their young for weeks and sometimes months.

“It is a wonderful sight to see families of ducks feeding together. They are very protective of their young, threatening other birds. Luckily the only predators (apart from humans) on the Island are the snakes – the Bahamian Boa – which go after the eggs and the ducklings.

There are no feral cats, racoons or wild boars. But one also has to keep a sharp lookout for Red-tailed Hawks who are dangerous. They tend to follow the activities of the blue-winged teal which

migrate to the Bahamas every year in September and leave in April or early May after the rainy season ends. The hawks migrate with the teal and feed on them. They also attack whistling ducks when they can, killing them first (because they are quite a large bird) then ripping them apart before eating them.

“A pair of Ospreys nest every year on a platform at the very top of our main house. They are always there, look dangerous, but do not endanger the Whistling-Ducks because they are only interested in fish for food.”

The whistling ducks in their amazingly large flocks are now resident on Hog Cay throughout the year – although some birds migrate to Galliot Cay and the mainland of Long Island. Even the blue-winged teal now number over a thousand birds – swooping in at feeding time to share the corn feed put out for the whistling ducks.

“I now use as many as 150 50lbsacks of corn every month. Some of this

goes to our small herd of sheep, and chickens, but ninety percent goes to the whistlers.”

Only four of the eight species of whistling duck are found in the Caribbean: The West Indian whistling duck; the fulvous whistling duck; the white-faced whistling duck, and the black-bellied whistling duck. Of these birds the rare white faced vagrant was last recorded in 1926, and the black-bellied is also a rare wanderer to Cuba, Jamaica and the Virgin Islands.

However, the smaller and lighter yellowish-brown coloured fulvous whistling duck has sometimes been seen on Hog Cay – mixing with their larger cousins and enjoying the plentiful feed provided by Peter Graham.

There has never been any recording of the smaller bird nesting in the Bahamas.

Once hunted almost to extinction on many Caribbean islands, particularly Jamaica, the West Indian whistling duck is still considered rare and an endangered species. It is protected by law under the Wild Birds Protection

Act. Peter Graham has certainly carved his name in the history of Bahamas’ wildlife and his tireless activities have gone a long way to saving one of the world’s rarest and most temperamental ducks.

“I suppose my only claim to fame is that I have nurtured this flock of whistling ducks. There are very specific instructions –to my family – and they have agreed – that they will continue looking after these wonderful birds.

Even if the island is sold this responsibility has to be passed on to the new owners. It is in my will.”

What a life Peter Graham has led.

T One of the submissions in the Urban Planning and Architectural Design Competition for the new Central Bank headquarters, to be built where the Royal Victoria Hotel once stood.

he Royal Victoria Hotel, as it overlooked the city of Nassau, was always a splendid sight, no matter which side you saw it from. Magnificent in the glorious architecture of its era. Alas, where this grand hotel once stood is now an eyesore, an unkempt parking lot, which makes the whole area unattractive and unappealing. But there is now new hope that this ugly situation might be corrected, although at very great expense, or so it appears.

The site has been selected for the construction of a new headquarters for the Central Bank of the Bahamas and architects were invited to submit designs for how the new structure should look. There was a website where the public could see and vote for (before April 23) their favourite of the 11 design concepts.

It appears that although the Central Bank’s primary function is the regulatory and physical control of our nation’s cash, which requires it to operate with a high level of security, the designs were required to include space for

an art gallery, a museum and an ambitious-sounding 1,000-seat theatre, all of these for public use.

The website was, appropriately, called Nassau Reimagined.

I visited the website several times, because I was fascinated by the imagination that went into all the designs, possibly influenced by ultra-modern structures that are found in Arab states like Abu Dhabi or Dubai, where money seems to grow on trees or spouts from oil rigs.

My personal view is that ‘ultra modern’ will destroy the character of downtown Nassau, and only one of them suggests that the designer understands the spirit, and the long-lost beauty that made the Royal Vic an integral part of our successful tourist trade.

I saw only one design that looks in any way that it might belong on this prime acreage in downtown Nassau – because the designer seems to have understood the spirit and some of the long-lost beauty that were the Royal Vic.

New details about 300-year-old, $17 billion sunken treasure revealed BOSTON (AP) — A Spanish galleon laden with gold that sank to the bottom of the Caribbean off the coast of Colombia more than 300 years ago was found three years ago with the help of an underwater autonomous vehicle operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the agency disclosed for the first time.

New details about the discovery of the San Jose were released on Monday with permission from the agencies involved in the search, including the Colombian government.

The exact location of the wreck of the San Jose, often called the “holy grail of shipwrecks,” was long considered one of history’s enduring maritime mysteries.

The 62-gun, three-masted galleon, went down on June 8, 1708, with 600 people on board as well as a treasure of gold, silver and emeralds during a battle with British ships in the War of Spanish Succession. The treasure is worth as much as $17 billion by modern standards.

The Massachusetts-based WHOI was invited to join the search because of its recognised expertise in deep water exploration. The institute’s autonomous underwater vehicle, REMUS 6000, helped find the wreckage of Air France 447 in 2011, which crashed in 2009 several hundred miles off the coast of Brazil.

The vehicle descended to 30 feet above the wreck to take several

photographs, including some of the distinctive dolphin engravings on the San Jose’s cannons, a key piece of visual evidence.

“The wreck was partially sedimentcovered, but with the camera images from the lower altitude missions, we were able to see new details in the wreckage and the resolution was good enough to make out the decorative carving on the cannons,” said WHOI engineer and expedition leader Mike Purcell.

The treasure has been the subject of legal battles between several nations as well as private companies. Several weeks ago, UNESCO, the United Nations cultural agency, called on Colombia not to commercially exploit

O

ne day, some six years ago, I was sitting at my desk enjoying a few minutes going through Facebook and looking at posts made by friends of mine.

I particularly enjoyed looking at photographs posted by my friend Patricia Vazquez. She took lots of really happy pictures of the various rescued animals that lived at her farm.

I had followed the arrival of the pony Jazz, from a petting zoo, and how Jazz was “with child”. I was enamoured when I saw the photos of her baby, Maya Moon, just a few minutes old, in the hay at her mother’s feet.

These pictures made me smile and they also set me to thinking. I kept thinking that, just perhaps, I had found a vehicle to fulfil, at last, a life-long dream of mine: to write a children’s book.

So I contacted my friend Patricia Vazquez and said just that, that I thought I could write a compelling children’s book around her photographs.

She loved the idea and very graciously gave me access to all her photo files on her computer. Now, that was quite the challenge, as there were simply hundreds of wonderful, amusing, touching and adorable photographs to choose from, all of animals interacting, making faces, and simply being in the right place at the right time.

I felt inspired to write about the pictures. I know people think that I am a bit nuts, but I promise you I frequently feel that I know what an animal would be saying if they were able to speak human language. I feel that just by looking into their eyes and reading their body language I can pretty much tell what is going through their mind.

This “gift” came in handy writing “Maya Moon”, because I could look at

Maya Moon’s sixth birthday the photo and imagine the interaction between the animal in the photo and little Maya Moon.

The first half of the story starts with the arrival of Maya Moon’s mother, Jazz, at the farm. Before long we learn that Jazz is expecting a baby. The second half of the book is devoted to the first walk Maya Moon makes around the farm with her mother, meeting all the animals.

I tried hard to fashion the story to showcase the love of a mother for her child, which is the same with all mothers, whether human or not. I also tried to illustrate the bond between animal and human and demonstrate how important this bond is for both. The vast selection of simply enchanting

pictures made this task much easier to complete.

Some people may think that collaborating on a book 50/50 with another person would be difficult. The publishers were simply amazing and gave us hundreds of layout suggestions to make the book more entertaining for the younger crowd. Each day we would be faced with a handful of decisions to make, and make relatively quickly. We would phone each other up to see what the other one thought, and the absolutely amazing thing was, that never once did we choose different options. It was the most harmonious and in sync project I have ever been fortunate to be involved with.

“Maya Moon” enabled me to dream

the impossible dream and write a children’s book We chose bold and funny graphics, eye-catching and very colourful, in order to hold the child’s attention and make turning the page an adventure, as they would never be sure what to expect next. Pink aeroplanes grace one page, a page written in a circle on another, grass that is really words and much more is included in this sweet and simple little tale.

The book is hardback and contains 60 pages. Every page has a fabulous photo on it. Patricia Vazquez was meticulously careful about colour and contrast. My department, on the other hand, was dialogue and credibility.

Credibility for our young audience of readers, who like me, have a pretty good idea what an animal would say if they had human language. I personally believe that the gift of “reading” animals is lost to many, and frequently disappears when you grow up. It’s a gift like many other things.

The book has been out for a while, we are still selling it, and by now there must be a new crop of little ones who do not own a “Maya Moon” book.
