Gospel artist Shara J believes in providing hope to the hopeless with her music

WITH every song she writes and every album she creates, it is always Shara J’s hope that her music uplifts those who are downcast in their spirit.

With her latest album, the veteran award-winning Bahamian gospel artist believes she will be able to bring hope to those who may be feeling hopeless, while also inspiring them hold on to their faith.

“Enthroned” is the title of the new nine-track album which features all original songs written by Shara J herself.

Like with so many Bahamian artists, Shara J’s musical career started within the fours walls of a church. This is where she got her first experience performing in front of others.

“I started singing in church choirs at the age of 15, but never officially recorded a single until joining up with Fam Records on a compilation album ‘Bahama

Praise Party’, for which the song ‘Jump Around’ was recorded,” she said.

On that same album the Kingdom Kids Choir, a community choir which was founded by the artist, also performed a song written by Shara J.

Singing has always been in Shara J’s blood and she has a number of musically inclined vocalists in her family.

“I come from a family of singers, having always heard my mother and father singing and entertaining their friends when they hosted social gatherings at the family home. I would also hear my mother rehearsing for sets to sing at the various clubs as a lead singer or a backup singer for the late Smokey 007, prior to her becoming a Christian. Most of my siblings can sing and many of my paternal aunts and uncles. I was also told that my paternal grandparents could both hold a beautiful tune,” she said.

Shara J has been a performing gospel artist for the last 22 years.

“I am inspired by my love for God and praise and worship, which propel me to

keep going and growing,” she said.

This inspiration also fuels the songs she writes.

“I write gospel music… however it comes and whatever I hear it in my spirit. Sometimes it comes in different ways at peculiar times and wherever I am, I have to grab my phone and start writing or voice recording it,” she said, It brings her great joy to create music, as Shara J knows this way she has an opportunity to reach people she may never meet.

“What I love most about gospel music is how much and how deeply it uplifts the most downcast of spirits. You could be going through your darkest moment and one line in one song could pick your spirit up in a split second. That’s the power of gospel music and the effect of praise and worship,” she said. This year, Share J intends to travel more in an attempt gain exposure for her music with a broader audience and with “a view to share what Holy Spirit has given me to give to the world for the honour and glory of God.”

‘I Was Glad’ - Christ Church Cathedral hosts a concert of psalms and hymns -

Nassau’s historic Christ Church Cathedral will play host to a special concert featuring psalms and hymns this coming Sunday at 7pm.

“We have entitled this concert ‘I Was Glad’,” said Adrian Archer, Director of Music at the Cathedral and Artistic Director of the Frederick W Fleischer Memorial Concert Series, under whose auspices the concert is being held.

This is the second instalment in the concert series, which is in its inaugural year.

The first concert was the Epiphany Organ Recital given by the organist of the Cathedral, Dr Sparkman Ferguson, earlier this year.

“The third will be the presentation of the Requiem by French composer Maurice Duruflé in late October 2024,” said Mr Archer.

“ ‘I Was Glad’ is taken from Psalm 122 and it is upon this basis that we will ‘go into the house of the Lord’ to present choral, instrumental and organ music based around selected psalms and hymns of our Christian tradition.”

Participating artists for this Sunday’s concert include the New Providence Piano Trio, made up of violinist

Cameron Pratt, cellist Romel Shearer and pianist Dr Paul Jones; the Cathedral Players, the 35-voice University of the Bahamas Concert Choir, as well as The Highgrove Singers.

“I’m very excited to present this music,” said Mr Archer. “The psalms and hymns give us such diversity in textual style from which to choose. We have the grandeur and majesty of the arrangement of Parry’s ‘I Was Glad’, which, by the way, has been sung at the coronation of every British sovereign since the 17th century, to the beauty of John Rutter’s Psalm 23 (‘The Lord is my Shepherd’); the sadness of hopefulness of Psalm 3, rhythms of Psalm 100 and variations on the hymn tune ‘Trentham’ (‘Breathe On Me Breath of God’). It’s going to be an exciting evening.”

Tickets, priced at $20 ($10 for students) may be obtained at the parish office at Christ Church Cathedral, St George’s Anglican Church, or may be purchased at the door. Proceeds aid the continued work of the Frederick W Fleischer Memorial Concert Series.

‘I’D WALK THE ENTIRE ISLAND FOR JESUS’ - IOT’S PRAISE MARCH 2024 SEES YOUNG AND OLD TURN OUT FOR THE LORD

PARTICIPANTS of this year’s ‘Jesus March’ hosted by the IOT organisation (It’s Our Turn) are eagerly sharing their unforgettable experiences on social media. Like last year, the event, held last Saturday, attracted people of all ages who marched for miles while giving praise to Jesus. Beijing Rodgers, a youth activist, international speaker, outdoor adventure enthusiast and IOT’s founder, captioned a video on their the official Facebook with the following comment: “Wow, as far as the eye can see. No words at all…This is what happened when the young and the old come together for Jesus. This was a generational March;

two to three generations in a family were represented.” She added: “We don’t do it for us today, we do it for our children and our children’s children. God is in the Bahamas. This was all because of Jesus. Thank you, Jesus. And guess what? I’d walk the entire island for Jesus if He commanded me to. He set us free; He has my everything. To all of you who came out for Jesus, I love you. God bless you and may God bless our Bahamaland.”

Bahamian author, motivational speaker and playwright Kerel Pinder said the ‘Jesus March’ gave her a far more greater experience than any other road march she has participated in.

“When I heard (Bahamas) Carnival and the Jesus March was on the same day and my little sister Beijing Rodgers said we are declaring war against the enemy, I

said ‘Oop’. It reminded me of when God began to turn my heart from the festival. In 2015, I was so excited to kick that off my bucket list; my lukewarm heart was not moved by the Holy Spirit at all. In 2017, in Barbados, at Jouvert, something I dreamt about experiencing for years, broke my heart. All I could think about was my Heavenly Father and how grieved He was at the vulgarness and debauchery I was surrounded by at 2am in the morning. Parade morning came I couldn’t even do Mas. I put on the top we purchased and some jeans and told everyone else to go without me. The Holy Spirit told me, ‘You cannot go’,” said Kerel.

Last Saturday’s event was Kerel’s fourth ‘Jesus March’. She said she listened to the voice of the Holy Spirit that told her: “He said you’re

going on the road to say, ‘I choose you, Jesus, and that you don’t want any of your sons and daughters in the road half naked engaging in wild parties and drunkenness. Romans 13:13.”

Anna Moss, another participant, the experience was a blessing. She said there were so many thoughts, prayers, hearts full of thanks, praise and gratefulness.

“As we marched I could only think of Jesus marching to Golgotha for you and me. This is so personal yet global and I pray everyone gets to experience an encounter with the Father. I’m grateful,” said Anna. For Brendalee Smith, it was a joy and an honour to hit the streets to show her belief and love for Jesus Christ.

“The young Christians showed out we love Jesus,” she said.

Sophia Knowles said her life changed forever when she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour; And He is not just her saviour, but also her friend.

“I have a personal relationship with Him. There

was a time when I thought I knew Jesus and understood what He had done for me. I believed I was living as a Christian, but in reality, I was simply being religious; following the routines I saw around me. People would live their lives from Monday to Saturday and give God a little time on Sunday. But family, it’s so much more than that. The difference in the quality of life when you fully live for God through His Son Jesus is indescribable. Seek Jesus as you would seek treasure or gold. Hunger and thirst for Him. Now, I live my life with a true sense of identity and purpose, and I will continue to share the gospel of Jesus

with everyone I meet. Thank you to the team of IOT for hosting this march. May God always bless you guys for drawing his children to Him,” said Sophia. Although the annual event requires much work to successfully pull off, IOT founder Beijing said she is glad do it again and again for Jesus.

“My life becomes a living sacrifice for the cause of Christ. God showed how much He loved us by sending His one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. We thank everyone who contributed to the success,” she said.
